By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – It’s hard to know how you’ll react in an emergency situation until you’re actually confronted with it. But for two area residents, when the test came recently, they could be proud of their reaction. At 5:17 p.m. Dec. 22, 2014, an 80-year-old Glen Ellyn woman mistakenly turned from Wolf Road onto the railroad tracks at the Wolf Road crossing in Western Springs. Western Springs resident Ed Suarez watched as she turned onto the tracks and continued to drive down them. “I saw her in front of me and saw her driving down the middle of the tracks,” Suarez said. “I was thinking, ‘oh no, this is not happening.’” Suarez immediately

Both concerned citizens said they didn’t think much about what they were doing at the time, only reacting to the situation. “I’d like to think anyone would do the same thing,” DeNaut said. “You just react and you do what you feel like you have to do.” Suarez echoed her sentiments and credited his years of emergency training as an employee of ComEd with keeping a cool head. “I was just the first one there,” he said. “But it was a team effort.” Western Springs Deputy Chief Brian Budds said the village of Western Springs has plans to officially recognize both Suarez and DeNaut for their actions that day. Both will be recognized at an upcoming meeting of the village. A date was not finalized by press time.

to the edge of the tracks were he met DeNaut. The two then helped the woman down the embankment along the side of the tracks as police arrived on the scene. “It’s hard to know how close [the trains] are from the lights,” DeNaut said. “Everything happened so fast, but it was like watching in slow motion. The police were amazing, they came very quickly.” The officers that arrived on the scene grabbed the woman and then used their bodies to form a wall around her, worried about what would happen if the train struck the car so close to them. Fortunately, the train only struck the open driver’s side door of the vehicle, and no debris was sent hurdling their way. The woman was placed in an ambulance for observation and later taken to the hospital for evaluation.

An article in the Dec. 31, 2014, edition of La Grange Suburban Life misstated Lyons Township gymnast Michelle Cozza’s placement. Cozza was champion on the uneven bars and placed second on vault at a state meet. Suburban Life regrets the error.

stopped his car and ran onto the tracks to help. “I could hear the wheels turning and hitting the wood [railroad ties],” Suarez recalled. When he got to the woman’s door he opened it and told her they needed to get her off the tracks as quickly as possible. Down the tracks to the east, Suarez said he could see the lights of an approaching train. Monica Liten DeNaut of La Grange also watched as the woman drove on the tracks. With her kids in the car, she found a safe place to park and also ran out to help after calling police. The Glen Ellyn woman told Suarez she was unable to walk without the assistance of a walker. Suarez didn’t feel they had the time to get the walker out and help her over the tracks. He removed her from the car and carried her

Lyman, along with his brother-in-law Charles Lay – who also married another of F.D. Cossitt’s daughters – bought the land where the home sits, as well as much of the surrounding area, spanning from Kensington to Brainard avenues and from 47th Street to the Railroad tracks. In fact, many homes in the area were developed by Lyman, Mahon said. Much of that area is now considered La Grange’s historic district, according to Mahon. Mary Cossitt Lyman selected the property, now 133 S. Spring Ave., for the site to build the home. D.B. Lyman also donated money to build

in 2014, the Tudor-style home has seen its share of modernization as well. The home features Gothic detailing and was updated to the current Tudor style in the 1920s. It was completely rehabbed again in 2000 by VonDrasek Builders. New plaster walls were installed at that time, as well as an attached three car garage. The home even includes its own guest suite located above the garage, which was completed with a full kitchen, laundry, living and dining room. If purchased, the home will also include a set of original plans for the home and other historical documents. You could even store them in the hidden safe that was built into one of the walls when the home was first constructed in 1875. “Every house has its own story,” Mahon said. “But this was really neat because of its connection to the start of the town. The people who will buy this home will be looking for something unique, I think. Something with history, but that’s still modern.” Which, she said, also was a reason to consider La Grange, as well.

In the market for a new home in 2015? One to consider – should you have the funds – is the former home of Mary Cossitt Lyman, the daughter of F.D. Cossitt, who founded the village of La Grange. The three-story home, located at 133 S. Spring Ave., is newly on the market with an asking price of $1.495 million. The 5,200-square foot Norman Tudor-style home was listed by Coldwell Banker in November. “This property is one of the most historically significant homes in the area, with a perfect blend of classic style and modern convenience,” said Kerri Mahon, the home’s listing agent. “The original layout of the house is what preserves its historical integrity, while the renovations make it suitable for a modern lifestyle.” Mahon said it was the home’s unique mix of modern upgrades and town history that instantly drew her to the home. The home features six bedrooms, one of which is a spacious master suite, according to the listing. An additional seven baths, a large kitchen with built-in breakfast bench and table, also comes with a front parlor room and flanking fireplaces. The outdoor area is completed with a brick patio and porch. The home was originally built for Mary Cossitt Lyman by her husband, D.B. Lyman. D.B. was a local developer and the first attorney of La Grange,

On Monday, Cook County began a pilot program for a policy to allow audio and video records to be made in some county criminal courtrooms, according to a news release from the Illinois Supreme Court. The pilot program is already being implemented in 45 other counties in the state. The decision was announced Dec. 16, 2014, by Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita B. Garman and Cook County Circuit Court Chief Justice Timothy C. Evans. Effective Monday, recordings were allowed at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago when in line with the Illinois Supreme Court Policy on Extended Media Coverage and a new Circuit Court rule promoted by Evans. With the announcement, Cook County became the 15th and largest circuit court to be approved for the program by the policy, which was first an-

nounced in January 2012. Under the policy, a request for cameras at a hearing or trial must be initiated by the news media through a media coordinator selected by the media. Still, the trial judge will be given absolute discretion on whether to allow camera coverage of a proceeding. The media will not be allowed to appeal the decision. The policy will not extend to coverage of the testimony of the victim in cases of sexual abuse or where sexual abuse is an essential element of the case, according to the release. The victim’s permission would be required in such cases. Similar rules are in place for police informants, undercover officers and relocated witnesses. The policy also prohibits media coverage in any juvenile, divorce, adoption, child custody and evidence suppression for trade secret cases. Extended coverage of jury selection, the jury and individual jurors also is prohibited under the policy.

There is plenty you can do to avoid the flu. The viruses change a little from year to year, which can affect how well the shot works in any given season. One flu shot per year does the trick for almost everyone, and it is a safe and effective way to prevent the flu and reduce the risk of associated complications. The earlier you get a shot, the better. It takes two weeks for the flu shot to start working, so consider a vaccine early in the season. Take care of yourself: Mom always said to feed a cold and starve a fever, right? Not so. Studies show no matter the ailment, it’s always important to stay full and hydrated to ensure a quick, complete recovery. Other ways to avoid getting yourself or others sick are thorough and frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when coughing, avoiding contaminated surfaces and getting plenty of sleep. Know the symptoms: Flu symptoms include a fever, cough, congestion, chills, fatigue, body aches, sore throat and headache. Cold symptoms, while similar, are fewer in number, milder and last only a few days. The flu typically lasts seven to 10 days for children and five to seven days for adults. Some symptoms, such as fatigue, may last several weeks. If you suffer from labored breathing or dehydration as a result of the flu, you should go to the hospital. Know if you are at risk: While the flu can strike anyone, some people are at a higher risk. This includes the elderly, children younger than 2 and individuals with medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and kidney and liver disease. Individuals with compromised immune systems also are at especially high risk.

Constantino Estrada of Riverside salts the sidewalk Monday outside his home.

If you thought the comparatively mild weather this winter through Christmas and New Year’s meant we were going to get off lightly this year, then you were sadly mistaken. It’s still not quite as bad as the polar vortex conditions we saw last winter, but this week’s snow and single-digit temperatures are a reminder that in this part of the world, a harsh winter is inevitable. Maybe next week will be nicer? Thanks to two bystanders, an 80-year-old woman who mistakenly drove onto the Metra tracks in Western Springs lived to tell the tale. Ed Suarez of Western Springs and Monica DeNaut of La Grange were able to pull the driver from her vehicle not long before a Metra train struck the driver’s side door of the vehicle. Their quick thinking and willingness to act deserves recognition. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

SOUND OFF

Property taxes down, water and rubbish rates up It is great that Elmhurst is lowering our property taxes a little this year, but they are raising our water and rubbish rates. Talk about giving with one hand and taking away with the other!

Downers Grove should consider village complex

There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. If residents do not feel it is appropriate to spend this amount of money, why doesn’t Downers Grove consider using an existing building that would only need interior work? Using an existing building should cut down dramatically on the final cost. There is an unoccupied

Dominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample space to meet the needs of Downers Grove. There is also ample parking. If that amount of parking is not needed, then perhaps a fleet building could be built in the parking lot area. Downers Grove could sell the existing village hall and use the proceeds toward the new facility. Sometimes thinking outside the box is the best option.

Elmhurst Alderman Gukenkauf will be missed

I will miss Ms. Diane Gukenkauf as our Elmhurst alderwoman. Diane always questioned expenses and some strange actions by past mayors and officials. She ‌ is a smart person and leader! We will miss her thoughtful advice and counsel in the future.

Students shouldn’t provide election input

I [wanted to Sound Off] regarding the Hadley project regarding low election turnouts. I was just thinking the students, who are still children, should stick to reading, writing and arithmetic, and leave that other kind of thing to the adults.

Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

This is in regards to New Year’s [Eve and Day] celebrations. I would like to address all these people who feel the need to bring their neighbors into their celebrations by letting off fireworks at midnight. It’s very disturbing. It’s very unnecessary. And if you want to celebrate, celebrate on your own. But don’t involve all your neighbors.

ELMHURST – After playing five games in six days, Lyons Township’s boys basketball team learned a lot about itself at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament. The Lions went 4-1 in the tournament and placed third, one spot up from last year’s fourth-place finish in the 32team field. LT defeated Stagg 74-43, Oswego 68-58 and Naperville North 59-56 in double overtime to make a semifinal against last year’s tournament champion, Lake Forest. The Scouts, who defended their tournament title, beat the Lions 59-47. The Lions then rebounded with a 56-52 double-overtime win against DePaul College Prep in the third-place game to give the team some momentum heading into a showdown Jan. 9 at Hinsdale Central. Harrison Niego scored 28 points in the win while Jaquan Phipps added 13 points. “It wasn’t pretty, we didn’t shoot it well, but the kids battled down the stretch and found a way against a very good opponent to pull it out,” LT coach Tom Sloan said of the win against DePaul Prep. “I’m just thrilled that we found a way to win this one.” Niego and Phipps were both named to the all-tournament team, but the emergence of sophomore Connor Niego was arguably more notable. Connor, who is 6-foot-8 with good shooting range and long arms, scored 26 points on 11-for-15 shooting in the loss to Lake Forest and averaged 13.5 points per game at the tournament. Connor has the potential to take some of the scoring pressure off Phipps and his older brother, Harrison. “Connorplayedgreat[against Lake Forest] as far as scoring the ball,” Sloan said. “He’s done some really good things defensively, altering shots.” Playing with his older brother, who also is the team’s floor leader, and cousin, Noah Niego, has helped his adjust-

So playing with him I really adjusted very well.” He still remains somewhat raw considering his slender build, but his coach believes

he has the tools to be a very good player. “He looks like when a horse gives birth and you got the long arms and legs,” Sloan joked. “He’s still growing like a weed, so the strength will come. He’s a muscular kid, he’s wiry strong and he’s going to fill out in time.” The Lions’ next game is Friday at Hinsdale Central. Both teams are 3-0 in the West Suburban Silver.

LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE Public Hearing Notice Notice is given that the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Village of Western Springs, Cook County, Illinois, will hold a public hearing at the hour of 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, on January 29, 2015, in the Board Room at the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois, relative to a request for a variation from the corner side yard setback regulations found at Section 10-6-3(2) (Minimum Yard Requirements; Corner Side Yard) of the Western Springs Development Control Ordinance, for the following described property: Legal Description: Lot 12 in Block 9 in Caldwell's Subdivision of C.C. Lay's Addition to Western Springs, a Subdivision of the East Part of the Northwest Quarter of Section 6, Township 38 North, Range 12 East of the Third Principal Meridian, in Cook County, Illinois. Common Address: 4087 Rose Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois. P.I.N.: 18-06-122-012 Zoning District: R-2 Single Family Zoning District Petitioners: Scott and Melissa Yanzy ("Property Owners" or collectively the "Petitioner") The purpose of the variation is to allow for a reduced corner side yard setback for the south side of the residence adjacent to the Maple Street right-of-way. The current zoning regulations require a corner side yard setback of fifteen (15') feet along the south side of the property. The Petitioners are requesting permission to build a new residence on the property that will encroach into the corner side yard setback area a maximum of four and one-half feet (4'6"). The front portion of the new residence does not require a variation from the corner side yard setback requirement, but approximately one-half of the length of the new home (22') does require a variation from the required setback. Petitioner's application and supporting documents have been on file with the Village Clerk since November 24, 2014. The supporting documents are available for examination through the Office of the Village Clerk (or Community Development Department) in the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois 60558. This Notice is given pursuant to state law and the applicable provisions of the Village of Western Springs Municipal Code and its Development Control Ordinance. All persons wishing to be heard may appear and be heard at the public hearing or may submit written comments with respect to any issues regarding the requested zoning relief. This Notice is given pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/11-13-1 et seq. and the Open Meetings Act. The public hearing may be continued by the Board of Zoning Appeals without further notice other than a motion to be entered upon the minutes of the hearing, fixing the time and place of any subsequent public hearings, if necessary, or except as otherwise required by the Illinois Open Meetings Act. If you have any physical or mental conditions that would be considered a disability under the American's with Disabilities Act, the Village will make and take all reasonable measures to assist you in participating in the public hearing process. If you need translators or other assistance to make the process meaningful for you, please also notify us. It is our goal to provide these reasonable accommodations to those with disabilities so that they may meaningfully participate in the public hearing process. Persons requiring auxiliary aids and services should contact Mr. Martin Scott at the Village Hall, 740 Hillgrove Avenue, Western Springs, Illinois 60558 or call Mr. Scott at 708-246-1800 five (5) days prior to the above hearing date to inform us of your anticipated attendance.
