Look back at La Grange’s biggest stories By KRISTIN PEDICINI

kpedicini@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – As the new year nears, it’s time to revisit what made 2014 memorable. From two new multifamily developments being brought to town to the sentencing of John Wilson Jr., this year’s top stories will live on long after the ball drops next week.
1. Murderer sentenced What happened: John L.
Wilson Jr., was found guilty of first-degree murder for the 2011 murder of 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin. The verdict, after the September trial, came from a jury of five men and seven women which spent almost two and a half hours deliberating. Wilson received four guilty verdicts from the jury. During the trial, prosecutors told the jury that Wilson was burglarizing the O’Laughlin’s Indian Head Park home when Kelli returned home from school and surprised him in the act. Quote of note: “Justice will never be served because Kelli will never be coming home.” Brenda O’Laughlin The number of years John L. Wilson Jr. was sentenced to spend in prison.

the La Grange Village Board approved two new multifamily developments for the La Grange area. The first approved development was the Opus Development, set for the former YMCA site. Located at 31 E. Ogden Ave., the project will encompass 254 units, along with a 9,000-square-foot retail

School Districts 105, 204 and 102 began seeking legislative assistance and approval to separate from the Lyons Township Treasurer’s Office. Working together with school districts gives the treasurer’s office financial oversight of what happens in the schools. For District 105, according to its board, the separation would mean potentially saving $100,000 or more across three years. Quote of note: “We believe shared responsibility and

Steve Kneifel, a former police officer with the La Grange Police Department, checked himself into the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in November 2013. After his stay, Kneifel was transferred to Edward Hines Jr., VA hospital, near Maywood. When he heard of the national news, Kneifel said he wanted to share a story of when the program had worked. He only ever waited a few days to a week before being seen at the VA, he said. Kneifel served with the National Guard in Afghanistan – in 2008 and 2009 – as a door gunner on a Chinook CH-47 helicopter. For Kneifel it was the transition home that sparked an issue. He said he began seeing a VA counselor in 2011 for suicidal thoughts and excessive alcohol drinking. Now, Kneifel has a new job at a car dealership and visits the VA once a week instead of his original three visits. Quote of note: “If I didn’t have the VA to help me, I have no idea what would’ve happened. in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and to see just who in this little house lived. As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, A sobering thought came through my mind For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, The home of a Soldier, I could now see clearly. The Soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not how I picture a United States Soldier Was this the Hero of whom I’d just read? Curled up on a pancho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night, owed their lives to these Soldiers who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, because of the Soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn’t help wondering how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to one knee and started to cry. The Soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa don’t cry, for this life is my choice.” “I fight for freedom. I don’t ask for more,” “My life is my God, my Country, my Corps.” The Soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, as we both shivered from the cold night’s chill. I didn’t want to leave, on that cold, dark night, this Guardian Of Honor, so willing to fight. Then the Soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, whispered, “Carry on Santa.....It’s Christmas Day....., All is secure.” One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend....and to all a Good Night.
God Bless the U.S. Military... each and every one of them!

Help is on hand for e-readers at the La Grange Park library Are you hoping to find a new e-reader in your stocking this year? Do you have one that you’d like to use more? Did you know that La Grange Park library cardholders can download e-books and audiobooks to their e-readers or phones at no cost? We have good news for you! The library recently COMMUNITY added thousands of e-books VOICE to their collection through Susan the eRead Illinois program, thanks to a grant awarded to Fagan the Reaching Across Illinois Library System. According to eRead Illinois, “The two-year grant program will increase access to e-books for Illinois residents and grow e-book expertise among library staff, library system staff and Illinois residents.” Readers can access this growing collection from home through the library’s website at www.lplibrary.org. Just click on the eRead Illinois slide. Help for all compatible devices is available on the eRead Illinois site at http://shawurl.com/1mjz. In addition to the eRead Illinois collection, library users still have access to digital titles through www.mediaondemand.org. This collection includes audio books for all ages that are great to listen to in the car during those holiday road trips over the river and through the woods. If you need assistance downloading titles to your device, stop by the library in person, or call 708-352-0100. We recently reconfigured the ground floor to make seating more open and comfortable. The old computer bank is gone and we have all new laptops that circulate within the building for public use. These improvements were made possible through a $50,000 grant facilitated by the office of State Representative La Shawn Ford. Look out for even more improvements at your library soon, including improved reference and reader’s advisory services. Also, just a note that the Library will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1, 2015, for the holidays. I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

To the Editor: I’m humbled when I walk through our daytime Support Center on the way to my office every morning. Most of the men, women and families who are here to meet with case managers, use computers, take a shower or do their laundry have spent the previous night sleeping en masse at a shelter site hosted by congregations in Oak Park, Forest Park, Berwyn or Franklin Park. They were greeted by volunteers, many who have been part of PADS’ shelter operations for years. They were served a dinner thoughtfully prepared by volunteers and were watched over as they slept by a crew of second-shift volunteers. They were awakened by volunteers who prepared and served breakfast while they cleaned up the shelter space together. As they left the shelter at sunrise, they were handed a sack lunch prepared by volunteers. Night after night, from mid-September to mid-May, a formidable network of PADS volunteers builds a safety net to catch those experiencing homelessness in your community. These gifts of time, treasure
and shelter space make possible the first step for many in their transition from housing crisis to housing stability. West Suburban PADS has had another magnificent year of growth and impact. We’re helping more men, women and families transition back to stable housing – people who are unemployed or under-skilled, disabled by a chronic medical condition or struggling with their mental health, all of whom are experiencing a housing crisis. I’m thrilled to report that this past year there were 15 percent fewer people relying on our emergency shelter and 100 percent more participating in our supportive housing program. In addition, we engaged more than 100 people living on the streets and for extended periods in the shelter to help them connect to services and housing. As we turn the page on 2014, we want to express our gratitude for this community’s tremendous generosity and for enabling us to be there for those without a home this holiday season. It is on their behalf that we write this note of appreciation and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2015. Lynda Schueler Executive Director, West Suburban PADS

LA GRANGE – For many people, the month of December brings about feelings of hope and happiness. But for some, December can be a long, cold month when families and individuals struggle to make ends meet. In an attempt to brighten the holidays for anyone feeling disheartened this season, La Grange’s Caring Place Foundation announced it will once again host a Christmas Dinner for all to enjoy. Although the dinner may appeal to the less fortunate, people of all walks of life are invited for the holiday feast, according to Caring Place Foundation Director the Rev. Shawana McGee. “We do it to encourage someone who’s feeling hopeless this time of year, but we invite everyone,” McGee said. “We [want to] make it feel like a big, family Christmas party. Everyone is important on that day.” The Christmas Dinner, a tradition for 10 years now, will be an all-day event welcoming guests to come and go as they please at the La Grange Community Center, 200 Washington Ave. Preparations for the event begin on Christmas Eve, according to McGee. She said staff members will transform the space into a Winter Wonderland. While staff members cook and bake, kids will prepare life-essential gift bags to be given away at the event. Once everything is set, the day will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a morning breakfast for anyone who’s at the center. McGee said once the breakfast ends at 9:30 a.m., there will be a children’s pageant at 11:30 a.m. with songs and dancing, fol-

Judy Baar Topinka’s son, Joe, and friend, Nancy Kimme, share an embrace Dec. 17 during the memorial service for the late Illinois comptroller.
Friends, family gather at memorial to remember Judy Baar Topinka By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com COUNTRYSIDE – There wasn’t a person in attendance at a memorial conducted Dec. 17 for the late Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka who didn’t remark on her feisty personality, humor and commitment to the people of Illinois when asked their impression of the longtime public servant. Topinka, who requested that no wake or funeral be held, did allow for her family, friends and colleagues to remember her with a memorial service a week after she died of a stroke. Perhaps her request not to have a funeral was to avoid holding a somber affair in her name. Topinka, a longtime Riverside resident, was well known for – as many remarked at the memorial – being someone who would have wanted the room upbeat. To that end, the memorial would have been a success in her eyes. Attendees fondly recalled her spirited personality and her unique touch as a politician in Illinois. Cook County Commis-
Illinois politicians, including Gov. Pat Quinn, pay tribute Dec. 17 to Judy Baar Topinka during her memorial service. sioner Jeff Tobolski said he thought of Topinka as a mentor and highly respected her ability to work across the aisle – or with anyone for that matter – to get the job done. “[Topinka] always saw things through to the end,” Tobolski recalled. “What a great loss for the state of Illinois.” As Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner also would recall during his remarks, Tobolski said just days following her death, he received a tin of holiday
cookies from Topinka. Tobolski said gifts like that were not uncommon, and he fondly recalled receiving her signature newspaper clippings with notes when she felt a good job was done by the recipient. Likewise, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said she admired Topinka for her straightforward manner and ability to speak her mind.

Governor Elect Bruce Rauner comforts Nancy Kimme, friend of Judy Baar Topinka, on Dec. 17 while Judy’s son, Joe Topinka, tells stories of his beloved mother during her memorial service. life,” Quinn said. “She was always known for telling the truth – a truth teller … she spoke from her heart and told the truth.” Considered a political outsider, especially early in her career, she served as a politician to the beat of her own drum and knew how to get people to work together – even when it might put her opposite her party and open her to crit-
icism. She was a Republican that was pro-gay marriage, pro-union and pro-choice. Rauner said Topinka led the “ultimate life” during his remarks and praised her loyalty and commitment to public service.

Call to action
But a serious and recurring theme throughout the ceremony was best said by former Gov. Jim Thompson, who spoke of her ability to work with people of all walks of life, her commitment to making the state better for its residents and the necessity for all sides to work together to accomplish that goal. Thompson called on those in attendance to find ways to compromise and work together to solve the lengthily list of issues before the state. “So if we really respected our departed friend and really want to do something in her memory at this memorial, we could take a vow to work together … to move the people forward,” Thompson said. “Or, as Judy might say, ‘We got them here, lock the doors, order the pizzas, were gonna start now.’”

“I gave her high marks for honesty,” Preckwinkle said. The memorial began with a rendition of “Amazing Grace” sung by the Salem Baptist Church Choir and was followed with a procession of the Illinois State Police Color Guard. Joseph Birkett, judge for the second district of Illinois Appellate Court and Topinka’s running mate during her 2006 bid for the governor’s mansion, led as master of ceremonies. He recalled picking Topinka up at 6 a.m. the first morning of the 2006 campaign. With her trademark large coffee in hand, she got into the car with Birkett only to have the bottom of it fall out on her lap. “It’s a good thing I wore dark pants; let’s go,” he recalled her saying. Gov. Pat Quinn remembered Topinka in his remarks as a politician who went the extra mile and then some. “She volunteered for very difficult and challenging assignments throughout her

by Rich Miller, publisher of Illinois politics blog, Capital Fax, and radio personality Roe Conn most – both for their levity and their directness. Featured in a video segment speaking to former Gov. Rod Balgojevich, Topinka was known for her wry smile and humor. Delivered in her signature brash way, she could deliver a right hook of a joke. It was fitting at the memorial that the political elite in attendance, which included the likes of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, would not be spared a ribbing in the remarks of Miller and Conn. Conn especially brought many to tears during his remarks, though not of sadness, but of laughter. Riffing on Quinn’s comment, Conn called Topinka a “truth screamer” and said she was a politician who could be counted on to tell it straight. Keeping the memorial filled with laughter and happy memories was longtime friend and chief of staff Nancy Kimme, who spoke of her admiration – and frustration – with Topinka’s straight talk. She added Topinka’s personality always filled the room.

By JOE SINOPOLI jsinopoli@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – Lauren Sandusky is 9 years old, and like any 9-year-old child, Christmas is taking up much of her mental energy these days. But Lauren isn’t thinking about the gifts she will find under her own tree Christmas morning – she’s making sure children of lesser means have something to unwrap for the holiday. Lauren, a student at Blythe Park School in Riverside, and her mother, Linda, started shopping at the first of the year for gifts that she has packed in shoeboxes donated by local shoe stores, which then were collected by the Samaritan’s Purse relief organization for Operation Christmas Child. Besides buying the gifts, friends, neighbors, relatives and strangers also contribute to the stockpile of gift items. Under the program, the gift boxes then are shipped to lessfortunate children all over the world. Since 1993, 113 million boxes have been sent out by the organization, according to the Sandusky family. This is the fourth year Lauren has participated in Operation Christmas Child. She has her own recipe for making up a box. Items include a stuffed animal, toothbrush-
es and toothpaste, T-shirts, soap and washcloths, coloring books and crayons, and hard candy. “We usually put a little personal note from Lauren and her picture,” Linda Sandusky said. The Sandusky’s loaded the 125 boxes packed by Lauren into the car and dropped them off to the Christian Life Center in Berwyn in December where they then were picked up by North Carolina-based Operation Christmas Child, which determines where across the globe the boxes eventually will be delivered. A bar code is attached so donors can track to which country the boxes are sent. The expense of the boxes is not limited to just the contents for the Sandusky family. Donors such as them are asked to donate $7 for each of the boxes to cover shipping costs. For the experience Lauren gets by the gesture, it’s worth it, Linda Sandusky said. “I think its teaching her to give back to the community,” she said.”Lauren’s a generous person by nature. But it’s made her realize that not everyone lives as affluently as we do.” For Lauren, it’s simple. “We do it because it’s fun and it makes us feel good,” she said.

Nazareth played five games at Naperville North, finishing Saturday, and started tournament play at RB Monday. The Roadrunners’ schedule in 2014 included 15 games, 13 tournament games when including the IC Catholic Invite the week of Thanksgiving, one East Suburban Catholic Conference game and the season opener at West Chicago. When the Roadrunners return to action in 2015 they will play six ESCC games in January.

Tournament: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic Location: York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst First game: 3 p.m. Friday vs. Stagg What to watch: The Lions made the semifinals at this tournament last year and could make another strong run this time around. LT is one of eight seeded teams in the 32-team field and opens against Stagg, which entered the tournament with a losing record. Defending tournament champ Lake Forest, Palatine and Elk Grove are the other seeded teams in the same half of the bracket as LT. Seniors Harrison Niego and Jaquan Phipps both have been consistent key performers for the Lions this season and an inexperienced supporting core seems to be developing around them. The Lions have four guaranteed games at York and could play five in six days, meaning the team’s depth will be important over the duration of the tournament.

Game breakdown
LA GRANGE – Jalen Clanton’s huge 3-pointer happened so fast the sophomore didn’t even have a chance to get nervous. Clanton received a nice pass from Daniko Jackson on a drive-and-kick and swished the 3 to give Riverside-Brookfield a three-point lead with 33 seconds left. That proved to be the game winner Saturday night at Lyons Township. The Bulldogs (9-0) remained undefeated with a 66-64 win against their neighbors. LT (82) lost for the first time since the season opener against Stevenson. “Daniko told me to go to the corner when he drives, he gave me a great pass and I knocked it down,” said Clanton, who also admitted this was R-B’s biggest win of the season so far. “It was just catch and shoot. It was a natural reaction. Catch it, put it up, shoot it as best as I can and pray it goes in.” Clanton scored 14 points and was one of three Bulldogs to score in double figures. Sam Johnson (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Mark Smith (16 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles. Smith had 10 points in the first quarter and the Bulldogs led 19-11 after the quarter.

The last basket they got, they got in the paint and the kickout was a great pass, but we got beat off the dribble to initiate that. “Hopefully we get the chance to play them again ... at York.” Both teams will play at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, which starts Friday.
