LA GRANGE PARK – The Community Park District of La Grange Park announced Dec. 17 the hiring of a new executive director. Aleksandrs Briedis, a native of Villa Park, was named the new executive director after being hired by the district’s Board of Commissioners. Park district officials said Briedis has a long history of success in the parks and recreation field. Briedis earned a bachelor’s degree in leisure studies from the University of Il-

linois at Urbana-Champaign before moving to Colorado, where he worked as recreation director for the city of Rifle. Briedis worked for 14 years in Rifle and oversaw all aspects of the city’s recreation department, including master planning, programming, hiring staff, website development, funding, budgeting, grant applications and community involvement. Briedis returned to Illinois to serve as director for community recreation with the Batavia Park District before accepting the position in

La Grange Park. Briedis succeeds Roy Cripe, who is retiring after a 40-year career in the field of parks and recreation. Cripe was most recently executive director of the Community Park District of La Grange Park, a position he served in for the past six years. In a news release, the board praised Cripe’s service to the district and credited him with overhauling every aspect of the park district’s operations. The Board said he will be greatly missed while also wishing him well in his future endeavors.

WESTERN SPRINGS – A Metra train from Chicago headed west struck an unoccupied vehicle on the railroad tracks about 5:17 p.m. Dec. 22 in Western Springs, according to police reports. When police responded to the scene, they found the unoccupied vehicle located about 200 feet east of the Wolf Road crossing in the 700 block of Burlington Avenue in Western Springs. Police learned a man and a woman saw a driver turn from Wolf Road and drive onto the train tracks. The two ran to assist an 80-year-old Glen Ellyn woman inside the vehicle and helped to remove her from the vehicle as a train ap-

proached. One of the bystanders was identified as Ed Suarez of Western Springs. Shortly after getting the woman from the vehicle, a Metra train headed west to Aurora struck the driver’s side door of the vehicle, which was left ajar. Western Springs police said they believed the woman was traveling south on Wolf Road and misjudged a left turn and ended up turning onto the railroad tracks by mistake. The driver – and the two bystanders who assisted her from the vehicle – were not injured in the incident. The driver was transported to La Grange Memorial Hospital after the incident as a precautionary measure. Police said their investigation is still ongoing.

A female dolphin at her calf swim together at the Brookfield Zoo. born Dec. 5 died shortly after it was born. The zoo is still awaiting results of a necropsy – and animal autopsy – to learn more about the circumstances of the deaths. In the most recent death, the 7-day-old calf appeared to be doing well. After the birth, the calf and its mother received round-the-clock care by zoo staff. Most important, Zeigler said, was making sure

the calf was nursing and “slipstreaming” with its mother. Slipstreaming is a critical behavior that allows the newborn calf to conserve energy by riding a wake created by its mother and being pulled along in her stream. However, days later the calf and mother began to show behavior changes in their swimming patterns. When it appeared the calf was experiencing problems, zoo

BROOKFIELD – Staff at the Brookfield Zoo are mourning the death of a second dolphin calf born at the zoo, the Chicago Zoological Society announced Dec. 22. The 7-day-old calf was born Dec. 12 to 9-year-old Allison. The calf died Dec. 19 after zoo staff stepped in to provide supportive treatment. A second dolphin calf born Dec. 5 died suddenly that day after what was believed to be a normal birth. The first 30 days of a dolphin’s life are particularly critical, said Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of collection and animal care for the Chicago Zoological Society. One of the three dolphins born at the zoo in 2013 also died in the days after it was born. The other two are now 1-year-old calves, Merlin and Magic, and are doing well at the zoo’s exhibit. Zeigler said the dolphin

enced mothers have a higher loss rate than experienced mothers. He said that was especially true of dolphins born in the wild. The Chicago Zoological Society has participated in a 44-year study of wild dolphin research in Sarasota, Florida. Zeigler said that the study shows that moralities of young calves during the first 30 days of life account for the largest rate of loss to dolphin populations in the wild. The dolphins at the Brookfield Zoo, Zeigler said, get significantly better treatment than those in the wild. “It’s as much an issue out there as anywhere else,” Zeigler said. Zeigler said it was apparent the mother of the calf that died Dec. 19 was making a good effort to raise the calf. Members of the zoo’s staff are heartbroken over both deaths, Zeigler said. “Obviously, when this type of thing happens it is devastating for the staff.”

Looking back on a terrific year for LGBA This year has been quite a year. I was starting to focus on the issues across the globe, from ISIS to the Ukraine to Ebola. But then I spotted a big, red Santa Claus in front of Tate’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shop on Ashland Avenue and turned my focus instead to the upbeat things happening locally. Earlier this month, the La Grange Business Association COMMUNITY hosted its annual Hometown VOICE Holiday when thousands of Steve happy families came to La Grange to enjoy an all-village Jasinski sing-a-long, open houses, petting zoo and the arrival of Mr. Claus himself. There was real joy on the faces of families, and it was rewarding to see the holiday tradition continue for another generation. A week later, the LGBA and the Legacy Guild organized Santa’s Scholar Stroll with 85 people dressed like the jolly guy or one of his elves visiting restaurants in town to share holiday cheer. Event proceeds went to the college scholarship funds of the LGBA and Legacy Guild. It was a fun afternoon and a great way to support the local restaurants. Please consider coming out for this next year. Earlier, the LGBA and the La Grange Park District brought back the popular La Grange Endless Summerfest, which reunited neighbors, businesses and friends for a great weekend of live bands, food, fireworks, rides and more. This event is destined to become one of the premiere summer blockbusters in the area. A memorable event was a collaboration of the business association and the American Legion on September 11. It was very touching to see the business community and our local veterans come together for a poignant remembrance of all of the lives lost on that horrible day and an appreciation for what we have. As my term as LGBA president comes to an end, I’d like to thank the LGBA members for their passion and dedication to making La Grange a premier destination; the village of La Grange department heads, employees and trustees for their support of local businesses; the Dean Rouso Home Team at Baird & Warner for their support of my “second job” and lastly, thanks to my wife, Jennifer, and my kids, Nick and Avery, for their patience while Dad was at another nighttime meeting. I leave the LGBA in great hands with incoming president, Phil Fornaro. He and the board have great plans for the future. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015!

Steve Jasinski is president of the La Grange Business Association.

A snowplow clears the sidewalk in La Grange’s Central Business District after a January 2014 snow storm.

Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A lot happened in the La Grange area in the past year, and it’s been our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories and the fascinating people who make the news. If you missed our annual roundup last week of the top stories of the year, you can find it online at http://shawurl.com/1n5m. Thumbs up to the Caring Place Foundation in La Grange for hosting its annual Christmas Dinner. “We do it to encourage someone who’s feeling hopeless this time of year,” said the Rev. Shawana McGee, the foundation’s director. That sounds like a more than worthwhile goal. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

A letter of ‘thanks’

We just wanted to send our thanks to you, next-door neighbor. Thank you for not delivering our package that was mistakenly delivered to your home instead of ours four days before Christmas. Thank you for holding on to it for a whole six days and not bringing it over. We truly had a great time making multiple calls to the shipping company and post office looking for our missing package. Most importantly, we thank you for giving up our package to the postal inspector and having him bring it over. Next time you happen to get our mail on accident, just wave us over when you see us, we’ll walk the 50 feet from our front door to yours to get our mail. I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy the very expensive contents of the package after opening it and seeing what it was, but hey there’s always next year. Your kindness this holiday season has been overwhelming and we wish you a happy new year.

Thanks to good Samaritans

On Dec. 21, my wife and I were shopping in Meijer in Berwyn Plaza when she blacked out and hit her head on the floor. I yelled for help, and in mere seconds I had more help than I could have imagined. People immediately began to help. The store [employees] and strangers I will never know the names of helped me assist my wife. Someone helped me control the bleeding and someone called the paramedics. Thanks to you all. Also, it seemed like the paramedics arrived in just

Keep D-201 salaries static

A recently published “Sound Off” comment called for higher property taxes to fund School District 201, “Time to act in D-201,” but the author neglected to mention that district taxpayers have acted in very decisive ways over the years. Homeowners know that 80 percent of school district funds go for salaries and benefits and that higher property taxes will only make administrators and teachers even more affluent. In the 30 years I’ve lived in Berwyn, district residents have repeatedly voted down property tax increases. Four property tax increases were rejected in the last 20 years, including three times in 2007, with even larger margins each time. District 201 taxpayers weren’t born yesterday, and they don’t appreciate these attempts of District 201 administrators and employees to pad their wallets while claiming that it’s all for the children.

WORKER CLASSIFICATION Who is an employee? Who is an independent contractor? The IRS is keeping after companies regarding worker classification determinations. Treasury inspectors noted that some employers failed to follow up after the IRS reclassified the individuals as employees, rather than contractors. Apparently, as many as 15 percent of those employers continued to send 1099s to their workers instead of giving them W-2 forms. The IRS is planning an outreach program to remind the companies and warn that noncompliance will lead to audits. The general rule regarding an independent contractor is that the payer has the right to direct the result of the work but not what will be done or how. Once the employer directs the details of what can be done and when, then the worker is an employee. Also at issue, of course, are payroll taxes: the employer’s half of FICA contributions, plus any other local or state taxes.

I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. God made us all, we are all God’s children and I can’t understand all this hate.

SPRINGFIELD – Jerry Stermer, a former budget director and chief of staff for Gov. Pat Quinn, will take over the office of Illinois comptroller until Jan. 12. Quinn announced Stermer’s appointment in a Chicago news conference Dec. 12. “The sudden passing of Judy Baar Topinka left a hole in the hearts of the people of Illinois,” Quinn said. “While no one can replace Judy Baar Topinka, government must continue. Jerry Stermer is a respected and experienced budget expert who will carry out the duties of comptroller with integrity and heart.” Quinn said Stermer will work closely with Nancy Kimme, Topinka’s longtime chief of staff. Stermer will voluntarily step down Jan. 12. Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner and fellow Republicans praised the decision. “Appointing a temporary placeholder and keeping Judy Baar Topinka’s staff in place is an appropriate decision and will ensure continuity of services for the people of Illinois – for that I thank the governor,” Rauner said. “I know Jerry Stermer will be well served by Nancy Kimme and the team in

the comptroller’s office.” Topinka, 70, the Republican incumbent comptroller and November winner of another four-year term, died suddenly Dec. 10 after suffering a stroke. Since then, Quinn, who has less than a month left in office, and Rauner have sparred over how and for how long the position should be filled. Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued an opinion Dec. 15, saying Quinn could appoint someone to serve until Jan. 12, but the appointment then would be Rauner’s to make. Rauner argues the state constitution makes it clear he, as the sitting governor come Jan. 12 – when Topinka would have been sworn in, must appoint someone to fill her four-year term. The Democratic attorney general said while Rauner might be able to do that, he shouldn’t because it would leave an appointee in an elected position for four years. Quinn seemed to take the attorney general’s position as his own and called the General Assembly to Springfield for a special session Jan. 8. Quinn wants the Legislature to enable an election for comptroller in 2016, with the primaries in March and the general election in November.

• COMPTROLLER

Continued from page 12 To date, Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, supports the special election. A spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, said the speaker sees the dispute over the comptroller’s office an executive branch matter and would like Quinn and Rauner to reach an agreement. House and Senate Republicans joined in Rauner’s position. In a joint statement, the minority party leadership said departing from a clear constitutional path at the eleventh hour could only lead to unnecessary discord and litigation. Sen. Matt Murphy of Palatine, deputy Republican leader, said he favored Rauner making a four-year appointment. However, he added, the special session could be put to use to pass a proposed constitutional amendment to be placed on the 2016 ballots. That amendment would combine the offices of state comptroller and state treasurer. Combining the two offices, Murphy pointed out, was an idea Topinka supported. Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, said it wasn’t clear anything would come out of the special session. If Speaker Madigan insists the governor and governor-elect work out the question of the comptroller’s office without legislative intervention, the session may be a short one with nothing passed. And that, he added, might not be the worst thing ever. “I think we’ve all had enough drama,” Bivins said. Rep. Mike Smiddy, a Democrat from Hillsdale, said he intends to further study the attorney general’s opinion, but his inclination is that a four-year appointment to an elected, statewide office might be a stretch. “That seems a little long to me,” Smiddy said. Better perhaps, he said, would a comptroller’s election in 2016, especially as it could fit within the existing election calendar and not cause undue expense.ww

LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when
