stores wait on closure list SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
Ten RadioShack stores in the western suburbs are slated for possible closure after the technology retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Thursday, according to a statement and information on the RadioShack website. The affected local stores are among the nearly 1,800 possible closures of RadioShack’s 4,000 company-owned U.S. locations. RadioShack reached an agreement to sell up to 2,400 of its U.S. company-owned stores to Standard General, which plans to work with Sprint to establish a “store within a store” presence in up to 1,750 of the acquired stores, according to the website. Dealer franchise stores were not included in the bankruptcy filing or Standard General agreement, the statement said. There are 76 Illinois stores on the possible chopping block.

Nazareth recognizes longtime benefactors Academy also will host Prom Night for Teens with Disabilities SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth Academy hosted its annual Call to the Heart Mass and Reception on Jan. 25. At the event, Nazareth gave special recognition to Thom and Ann Serafin of La Grange Park. The couple was honored with the 2015 Call to Heart Award for their philanthropy toward Nazareth Academy. According to a news release, Thom and Ann Serafin have been longtime supporters of Nazareth Academy, as well as the community of La Grange Park. Their two sons, Mitchell and Matthew, are both graduates of the school. Even though both have graduated, the couple continues to support the schools, the release stated. During the event, Nazareth students and benefactors were able to gather and listen to stories, as well as share them.
Prom Night
Nazareth Academy will host their third Prom Night for Teens with Disabilities from 7 to 9 p.m. March 7, according to a news release. The prom will be hosted in the school’s Springer Hall and dining hall. The evening’s event is free and couples are welcome, although dates are not required. Each guest to attend will be accompanied by a Nazareth student, who will act as a buddy, according to the release. The idea to host such a prom was inspired by the relationship and coordinated efforts of ASPIRE of Illinois and the Nazareth Friends in Service and Hospitality Service Team in 2011. The Steering Committee for FISH Prom, including seniors Amy Burke of Western Springs, Maggie Harrington of Clarendon Hills, Megan Heurich of Chicago and Rebecca Letcher of Brookfield, along with the support of the Nazareth Student Council, has been planning this event all year. In all, between planners, escorts and the students who run the event, more than 80 Nazareth students will participate in the 2015 prom.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA It has been a tough past two years for brothers Matt and Phil Janowiak, of Indian Head Park. First, they lost their mother to kidney disease, and their father passed away from complications from a stroke he suffered soon after his wife’s passing. Matt Janowiak is a Fenwick graduate attending St. Louis University where he is enrolled in prelaw classes. Phil Janowiak is a senior at Lyons Township High School with plans to study political science. An Indian Head Park family has taken in both boys. According to Mike Corrigan, one of the organizers of an upcoming event for the boys, the two bright and talented brothers just need a little help. Enter One for the Kids, a 20-year-old west suburban charitable organization. The organization will host The Curve Ball to rally community support for the Janowiak brothers Feb. 28.

Increased signs of gang activity
they were connected or gang related. On Friday, investigators said new evidence and leads pointed to a possible connection between the two victims and there was evidence both shootings were related to gang activity. “We’re trying to get more confirmation,” Wardlaw said. “We’re having issues, too, if it’s a specific to a gang. It’s hard to say. “At this point, we believe we’ve linked the two [cases] together.” Wardlaw said the victims in both cases have continued to be uncooperative with police. Police have tried to make contact with the 22-year-old victim multiple times since the shooting, but he had not responded. Both men have connections to area street gangs, Wardlaw said. He added it was still unclear the degree to which the shootings were connected to street gangs. Police said the community has helped their investigation. Tips from residents have given them more to work on in both cases and they are
Police noted a small increase in gang activity in the area around the shootings since the second shooting was reported. A La Grange police officer was flagged down Jan. 29 by a resident who reported on Jan. 28 a white Jeep drove down the zero to 100 block of Washington Avenue with someone shouting “King Love” out the window. The phrase is a known slogan of the Latin Kings street gang. Two incidents of graffiti, which police said were gang related, were reported Thursday. Gang graffiti was reported at 7:42 a.m. Thursday on a building in the 200 block of Washington Avenue and at 7:53 a.m. on a vacant building that once housed a church in the 200 block of Sawyer Avenue. Wardlaw said the department was still attempting to connect the graffiti with a specific gang.
Increased reports
Analysis of La Grange police reports Friday showed an increase in the num-
ber of reports coming from the area of the shooting. Wardlaw said the department has seen a slight increase in the number of reports they are receiving from residents in the neighborhood. In addition, Wardlaw said the department has continued its increased patrol presence in the area. Wardlaw said La Grange investigators remain as the lead investigators in both cases, but the department has received assistance from the Major Case Assistance Team and from the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. Both organizations use detectives from area police departments with major investigations, Wardlaw said.
Police tips
The La Grange Police Department is requesting anyone with information on either shooting to contact investigators, which can be done anonymously. Information can be provided through the La Grange Police Department’s tip line at 708-579-0688. Investigator Wardlaw can be reached directly by calling 708-579-2334 ext. 2253. Police added residents should report any suspicious persons, vehicles or circumstances to police immediately, no matter how small they appear to be.
Information in Police Reports is obtained from local police departments. Individuals listed in Police Reports who have been charged with a crime have not been proven guilty in court.

LA GRANGE – La Grange police investigators are running down leads and making new connections in their investigations into two recent shootings on the village’s east side. According to Investigator Robert Wardlaw, the two shootings are showing signs they were related and the victims may have ties to area gangs. “It’s all of concern to us,” Wardlaw said. “We’re looking into gangs that might be involved.” A 16-year-old was shot in the leg Nov. 21 near Calendar and Sawyer avenues. Police responded to the area after receiving a report of shots fired but could not locate anyone. They later learned the teen was shot after he went to La Grange Memorial Hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound. On Jan. 26, police responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the zero to 100 block of Washington Avenue, about two blocks from the Nov. 21 shooting. When police arrived, they found a 22-year-old man shot in the abdomen. He was taken to Loyola University Hospital in Maywood for surgery and released that night. Investigators, on Jan. 30, said they were continuing to investigate the shootings separately and had no evidence
continuing to follow up on those leads. Wardlaw said the department welcomed tips and reports from residents, no matter how small, and said they could be given to police anonymously.

I didn’t have a video player, but as a good librarian I wanted to see it for myself, so I took it to my mother’s house to view. My mother was curious so she sat down to watch it with me. The scene in question depicts the wicked princess trying to trap the prince. The two get into a discussion of what they do for amusement. The prince says, “I like to give to the poor.” She feigns ignorance. He explains he has a lot more than he needs so he likes to take the extra stuff and give it away to those who really need it. She insists he demonstrate with the extra pearls on her gown. But when he reaches out to take one, she says, “No, no, your hands are too rough. Take them with your lips.” Now, mind you, he never does this because at that moment they are interrupted. Nevertheless, this was enough to upset this sensitive group of patrons. I pointed out the scene and said, “That’s it. That’s the part they want to get the video withdrawn from the kids’ department for.” My mother considered this information for a moment and then said, “I can understand that. Kids might think it’s OK to put beads in their mouths.” I laughed, “No, no, Mom, think smutty.” She still didn’t get it, which I think just goes to show, there’s no substitute for a pure heart. The best books and movies for children work on multiple levels. So it’s not that we didn’t understand our would-be censors’ point. But in our experience, when families watch that video together, the adults let out with a short laugh or smirk of recognition, but it sails right over the heads of the little guys. Rest assured, both kids and adults get it right away, though. She’s wicked!

Trying to pay for college after the loss of a parent can end up piling pain atop devastation. For students at Lyons Township who may be suffering this terrible fate, the Legacy Guild does what it can to help by funding a college scholarship. The Legacy Guild’s annual fundraiser for those scholarships is coming up, with the Big Spring Event scheduled Feb. 28 at FitzGerald’s Nightclub in Berwyn. For information, visit www.thelegacyguild.com. Lyons Township wrestling is on a roll. The squad has secured its second consecutive regional crown and heads toward the sectional having advanced more individual wrestlers than they did last year, when they fell to the team that went on to finish second in the state. A number of the wrestlers on the team are chasing individual glory, too. Best of luck, Lions!

Illinois public pensioners beware. With the increasingly massive amount of state of Illinois dollars devoted to public pensions, soon nothing will be left to cover other essential services: social needs, public safety needs, highway needs, school needs, etc. In order for politicians to get re-elected, they have consistently granted funds they did not have to pensions. They shouldn’t have done it, but they did. The choice seems to be for those on public pensions to halt their obsession with “you promised us” and make some minor modifications or face drastic measures (like Detroit) and end up with far less in the long run. Among the alternatives that will be far more costly to everyone, including pensioners, are state of Illinois income tax increases, reorganization through bankruptcies or drastic cuts in essential services.

OBITUARIES HARLEY CAITHAMER Harley Caithamer, 1921-2015, Born on a farm near St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, Harley attended a one-room school, one of three students in first grade. His father, James, worked in steel construction, so the family moved often. His mother Vlasta Lukes Caithamer was a teacher. By the time he finished second grade, Harley had attended four different schools. The family moved to Illinois “just in time to encounter the Great Depression”. Following graduation from Morton High School and a summer playing semi-pro baseball, he was drafted into the army. Beginning at the Anzio Beachhead, he served with the 45th Division as a Browning Automatic Rifleman and a light machine gunner. Going through Italy, France, and Germany (Bamberg, Nuremberg, Dachau, Munich) he earned four battle stars, a beach arrowhead, and a bronze star. After returning home, Harley married the love of his life, Miriam Ore Caithamer, and raised a devoted daughter, Beth. Thankful for surviving the war, Harley lived a life of service to others and to God. He attended Moody Bible Institute taking music courses, sang in choirs for 70+ years, enjoyed playing the piano, teaching Sunday School, and volunteering summers to the Rural Bible Mission. He had a passion for education and science. At age 42, after working various jobs, he entered Chicago Teachers College as a fulltime student and earned a Bachelors and Masters degree. An English major with an interest in science, he took courses as well as taught 6th grade Earth Science, 7th grade Life Science, and 8th grade Physical Science in Westchester, Illinois. After retiring from teaching, Harley shared his passion by volunteering for more than 20 years at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. He helped in the library answering “Think Tank” type inquiries from teachers, students, and others all over the world; He served on the Volunteer Council, Membership, Helping Hands, and Special Projects. He also read, gathered, and organized information in various science areas to maintain the “What's New” notebooks in Science Connections. In 2013, Harley and Miriam moved from LaGrange, IL, to Newtown

Gov. Bruce Rauner tours NOW Foods in Bloomingdale while on the campaign trail Oct. 24, 2014. Rauner presented his first State of the State address Feb. 4 in Springfield.
Rauner unveils broad agenda in the State of State address By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in his first State of the State address laid out a broad agenda to revitalize Illinois’ economy that focuses significantly on stripping the power and influence of labor unions. Rauner in his 40-minute speech to state lawmakers Feb. 4 called his proposals “bold” and “aggressive” but “necessary and very doable” to repair the state’s deep financial troubles, and make Illinois more competitive with other states. “The time is now for all of us, Republicans and Democrats, to do big things – the right things – for the people of our great state. Now is the time for bold and decisive action. It is make or break time for the Land of Lincoln,” Rauner said. But while Rauner preached the need for bipartisan cooperation to stop what he repeatedly called on the campaign trail the state’s downward spiral, he almost certainly will find a number of his proposals, especially those blunting organized labor, a very hard sell to Democratic lawmakers whom hold House and Senate supermajorities. He outlined some of his proposals in his address, and
others in an accompanying list of priorities he called “The Illinois Turnaround.” He told lawmakers they should consider the plan as a whole rather than a list of separate initiatives, and that while they would find things they don’t like, they will find a number of things they do. Among his top priorities for economic growth are implementing more significant workers’ compensation reform, tort reform, implementing true competitive bidding for public works projects while limiting prevailing wage requirements, and allowing local voters to decide by referendum whether or not local government employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment – Rauner dubbed the localized right-towork areas “employee empowerment zones.” “Employee empowerment zones will increase jobs for residents, increase economic activity for local businesses and generate more tax dollars for local governments. It’s a win-win-win proposal,” Rauner said. Rauner also seeks to limit organized labor’s influence by extending the existing ban on political contributions for businesses with state contracts to all organizations
with a collective bargaining agreement with state government, and organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds. In exchange for the business reforms, Rauner said he supports a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased in over seven years. While Rauner in his speech did not address the state’s $111 billion unfunded pension liability – a 2013 reform bill is awaiting an Illinois Supreme Court ruling regarding its constitutionality – his priorities list included a proposal to move state employees into a new tier of benefits or into 401(k)s while protecting the pension benefits they have accumulated to date. Another proposal seeks to give state government employees merit-based raises. A number of Rauner’s proposals are aimed at the local level, such as lowering the property tax burden on Illinois homeowners. Besides the right-to-work and prevailing wage reforms that he said will decrease local government’s costs, he wants a two-year freeze on property taxes and an increased emphasis on consolidating local units of government – Illinois at almost

Continued from page 14 7,000 has far more than any other state. “Our property taxes are out of control and are crushing middle-class families. Illinois’ high property taxes have skyrocketed because state and local governments have been unable or unwilling to control their own spending. We must empower taxpayers to take control of their property tax bills by giving them greater ability to control local government spending,” Rauner said. Rauner also echoed previous calls for constitutional amendments for term limits and merging the offices of treasurer and comptroller. Lawmakers will meet again in two weeks when Rauner delivers his proposed 2016 budget, which will give a more complete picture as to how he plans to pay for initiatives such as increased funding for K-12 education, and at the same time what needs to be cut. Besides a multi-billion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year beginning July 1. A much-criticized 2011 increase in the state income tax was allowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised. While Rauner said he wants to keep income taxes “low and competitive with other states” and keep the state’s flat tax over a progressive one based on income, he wants to extend the state sales tax to include a number of services. He likely will find pushback from members of his own Republican caucus, some of whom oppose any attempt to find more revenue over cutting spending.
Local lawmakers react
Rauner’s speech earned high praise from local Republican legislators and even received positive words from the other side of the aisle. Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said she’s encouraged by Rauner’s early signs of bipartisan leadership.
See EDUCATION, page 19 “It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on long-term solutions to the state’s problems,” she said. Radogno is particularly intrigued by the governor’s plan to freeze property taxes. “As a suburban resident, I know many property owners will share my interest in his plan to provide property tax relief. Gov. Rauner cited property tax rates as ‘one of the biggest impediments to growth,’ explaining the average property tax rate has increased nearly 33 percent over the past decade.” State Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, believes Illinois is now on a path to re-emerging as the “economic engine of the Midwest.” “Clearly Gov. Rauner was elected to make bold moves and take swift action to put Illinois back on the path to fiscal solvency and get our state’s economy going again,” Connelly said. Rauner’s commitment to government consolidation tapped into a major talking point for many local officials. State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, hopes the state can mirror the success witnessed in DuPage County. “The DuPage County model has achieved an estimated $100 million in taxpayer savings,” Sandack said, “and I hope to see that effort extended statewide so that taxpayers everywhere can experience tax relief.” State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged” by the governor’s pledge to consolidate units of government after she was part of the bipartisan effort in DuPage County. Conroy also agreed with Rauner’s focus on the state’s fiscal crisis. She said she’s committed to working with Republicans to pass a “fiscally responsible budget while preserving funding for education and other vital services.” “I look forward to hearing the specifics of Gov. Rauner’s plan and will continue to work with my colleagues in the House and Gov. Rauner to find balanced solutions to our state’s fiscal problems,” Conroy said.

BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

Ryser helps LT win regional By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com
LA GRANGE – After contributing to the Lyons Township girls gymnastics team’s back-to-back state championships, Kelly Ryser couldn’t think of anything else but coming back for more as a senior. “[Not returning] really didn’t cross my mind,” Ryser said. “That probably would have been the easy way out this year. I wouldn’t have wanted that.” On Friday, Ryser earned four top-five medals as the Lions rolled to the LT regional title with a season-best point total and advanced to the Hinsdale Central Sectional at 6 p.m. today. The Lions can automatically return to state by winning the sectional. LT senior Kelsy Kurfirst won the all-around (38.725), vault (9.8), balance beam (9.675) and uneven parallel bars (9.65) with season highs, and also won floor exercise (9.6). Ryser and freshmen Sarah Halm and Julia Cozzi qualified for sectionals in the all-around and all four events. Freshman Sonia Slusarczyk (vault, beam) and junior Natalie Cozzi (uneven bars) also were sectional qualifiers. LT’s regional score was second highest in the state and a season best by nearly two points. The regional was rescheduled from Feb. 2 after the heavy snowfall. “A season-high score with still some room for improvement and we learned a lot,” LT coach Kari Karubas said. “There’s been more to balance than just gymnastics so I’m proud of us and the fact that we kept our head above water.” Ryser and Kurfirst have been LT’s only competing members from the state teams. Senior Olivia McGann has been sidelined the whole season after labrum surgery. Ryser worked two events the past two state meets. As freshmen, Kurfirst and Ryser were all-arounders for LT’s state team.

“I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better meet personally and as a team.” Kelsy Kurfirst LT senior
Ryser was fourth in allaround (36.50) Friday, just shy of her season high. She was second on uneven bars (9.275) and fourth on beam (9.15) and floor (9.05). At her previous regionals, Ryser collected three medals. “Obviously it’s a good feeling,” Ryser said. “I focused more on how can I help the team do better. I guess the regional medals were a byproduct of that.” Halm had season highs in all-around (third, 36.575) and three events. She was third on uneven bars (9.175) and floor (9.15), tied with Slusarczyk for third on vault (9.175), and was fifth on beam (9.075). Cozzi was fifth on uneven bars (8.65). Kurfirst is the two-time defending state floor champion. In her final home meet, she nearly matched her school-record 38.90 all-around from last season. “It’s so sad that it’s my last competition in these walls, but I’m glad that it went the way that it did,” Kurfirst said. “I Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com honestly couldn’t have asked for a better meet personally Lyons Township’s Kelly Ryser competes on uneven parallel bars Friday during the regional meet the Lions hosted. Confident LT wrestlers rule regional matchups By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CICERO – Lyons Township came to the Morton wrestling regional hoping to dominate, and it did just that. The Lions had four regional champions and 10 wrestlers in total advance to the Downers Grove North sectional. LT won the team competition by nearly 70 points ahead of second place Downers Grove South. Zach Villarreal (120 pounds), Johnny Mologousis (145), Nick Spacek (160) and Ezra Avery (170) won regional titles. Elias Garcia (113), Tyler Zeman (132), Mac Casella (138), Jack Hollinger (182), Frank Walsh (195) and Taylor Curlin (220) also advanced to the sectional. “Definitely what we expected,” Spacek said. “Coach [Griff Powell] wanted us to just go out and dominate, and that’s what we did. We’re putting up some big bonus points and winning what we have to.” Spacek and Mologousis were first-time regional champs while Villarreal and Avery repeated as title winners from a year ago. Mologousis was a state qualifier last year and the sophomore is hoping to move onto the medal podium at state this year. “It feels good after all the hard work paid off and how I came from being happy taking third last year to now,”
Regional team scores n 1. Lyons Township: 219.5 n 2. Downers Grove S.: 143.5 n 3. Hinsdale Central: 139.5 Mologousis said. “I want to win the sectional and hopefully place high down state. That’s my goal right now.” In winning the team title at the regional, LT advanced to the team sectional competition for the second year in a row. Last year the Lions were knocked off by eventual Class 3A runner-up Marist by a 3528 score in the sectional. The team sectional will be after the individual state finals. LT could have a better team this year. The 10 wrestlers that got out of the regional is an improvement over last year’s eight. First up is the Downers Grove North individual sectional. Mt. Carmel, St. Rita, Brother Rice, Sandburg, Marist and Marmion Academy are some of the other top teams that will have wrestlers in the sectional, meaning spots at state will be tough to come by. The top four finishers at each weight class move on to state. After the regional performance, LT’s wrestlers are full of belief. “Confidence is definitely up there,” Spacek said. “You feel good coming in and winning the regional.”

Lyons Township Outlook: The Friars haven’t been up to recent standards this season but still have plenty of talent and remain a dangerous team after enduring a difficult schedule. Seniors Jessica Mackowiak and Jessica Moriarty and juniors Deja Cage and Kiki Sheard give the Friars plenty of scorers and outside threats, but they lack size in the interior. Fenwick’s first playoff opponent, Lyons Township, has plenty of size. Earlier this season the Friars blew a double-digit lead in a 54Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com 46 loss against LT. Coleanna Funches (18 points) and Myia Thomas (11) led seven players whom scored in a balanced effort against Central. To open the playoffs, West will take on Reavis, which is known for its fullcourt pressure. If the Panthers get by that game they likely face top sectional seed Whitney Young.

most part overcome the loss of senior forward Janae Dabney, whom was the team’s leading rebounder when she tore her ACL in December. Since then, RB has gone 10-2, including a win against neighboring Lyons Township. Sophomores Samantha Bloom, Lyndsey Hoyd and Dana Rettke have taken up bigger roles since Dabney went down. Bloom runs the offense at point guard, Hoyd is a deadly outside shooter and Rettke uses her 6-foot-7 frame to get easy baskets inside and prevent opponents from doing the same. The No. 4 seed is the best RB has had since moving up to Class 4A. With a win in the regional semifinal, the Bulldogs could play a possible rematch of last year’s regional final against Kenwood, which they lost 69-55.

Lemont or No. 21 Rauner Prep Outlook: The Chargers are likely to face No. 12 seed Lemont in a regional semifinal. If St. Joseph gets past that game, a meeting with No. 4 Glenbard South figures to be next. The Raiders won the Metro Suburban West with an undefeated record.
