or property tax incentives for a period of five years. Cook County is now the largest county in the nation to pass such legislation. “These past several years have been some of the most economically challenging in our nation’s history, and the impact of the Great Recession has been most damaging to our low-wage workers,” Board President Toni Preckwinkle stated in a release. “Unscrupulous business owners have exploited low-wage workers by refusing to pay overtime, classifying legal employees as independent contractors, paying less than minimum wage and, in some instances, even refusing to pay wages outright.”
Preckwinkle added it was unfair to hardworking employees and their families and it’s unfair to competing businesses operating within the confines of the law. Tobolski stated millions of dollars in wages are stolen from workers by their own employers every year, and businesses that take advantage of Cook County workers should not benefit from Cook County contracts, licenses and property tax incentives. Representatives from ARISE Chicago, an organization dedicated to building partnerships between faith communities and workers to fight workplace injustice, praised the legislation, according to the release.

Fifth-grader’s tree video earns $4K for school By MEGAN PIOTROWSKI editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LA GRANGE – How many people know that one third of the U.S. is covered with forest or that one healthy tree can have a value of up to $10,000? That’s what anyone who watched the award-winning video by Highlands Elementary School fifth-grader Talia Effeny learned. And, as a result, Talia’s school is $4,000 richer. Talia created the short video for the Scotties Trees Rock video contest, and it recently earned third place in the third-to-fifth-grade category of the competition. The La Grange school now will receive $4,000 in funding for outdoor beautification projects. “I was thrilled because I know Talia’s a great kid. I was just as proud that it was very much a student-produced project,” Highlands Principal Brian Graber said. Talia first heard about the contest from her fifth-grade teacher, Amanda Schlegel, back in September. The school had been working on securing funding for a garden project when Schlegel found the contest opportunity. Graber said this particular contest was perfect because it was both a funding source and an opportunity for students to be creative and get their work published. “The contest was part of one of our school improvement goals: publishing in the real world. The goal is to not just get students to create, but to give students’ work a level of authenticity through publishing,” Graber said. The national contest, hosted by Scotties Facial Tissues, asked students to work individually or in groups to create a three-minute video on the importance of trees and how their school could use the grand prize of $10,000 to beautify the outdoors. Finalists were selected and the winners were determined by an on-

Not surprising, perhaps, is that Talia has big ideas for how she’d like to see the prize money used. “I would really love a lot of vegetables and some basil in our grade’s garden bed,” Talia said. She also has a unique concept for incorporating sunflowers into their garden space. “We’d plant a ton of sunflowers in a circle, and when you tie them together, it would make a giant fort,” Talia said. Graber said they’re still in the brainstorming stages at this point, but that it’s a definite possibility.

she just basically just told me where to stand,” she said. Vicky was surprised to find out the motivation behind their afternoon in the forest preserve, however. “We were a bit surprised because we thought her video was for a school project. Then the next thing we know, we got a phone call from her teacher saying she was a top 10 finalist in the U.S. for this contest,” the mother said. Surprised, but very proud. “We are very excited for her and proud because she pretty much put together the video by herself,” Vicky said.

GORGEOUS
GOWNS for your big day
WESTERN SPRINGS – In a collaboration between the Lyons Township High School Theatre Board and the music and dance departments, students will perform a production of “Once on this Island” beginning Thursday night and continuing through the weekend. The production will be at LT’s South Campus Performing Arts Center, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road. Tickets to the performance will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens. LT students also can get in for $5 with a school ID. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, which will open an hour before the show. “Once on this Island” is a musical that takes place on an island that is very similar to Haiti, according to a news release from the school. The people on the island are divided into two groups: the wealthy and the peasants. Among the peasants, Ti Moune longs for a more exciting life. By manipulating the four gods – Death, Love, Earth and Water – Ti Moune witnesses an accident that severely injures a wealthy man. She nurses him back to help and falls for him. Once he is reunited with his people, she travels to the rich city to rekindle their love and the story unfolds. The large cast features student performers from La Grange, Western Springs, Brookfield, Burr Ridge, Summit, Countryside and Indian Head Park, among other communities. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Two performances will be at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Sunday. The theatre opens 30 minutes before the show.

Degree not the only measure of education

SPRINGFIELD – Americans care too little about education and too much about diplomas. Here in Springfield we extoll the virtues of Abraham Lincoln, our native son, who despite having little formal schooling was able to teach himself. This nation has never had a greater president. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Larry Ellison rose to be the titans of high tech. And none of VIEWS them obtained college degrees. Scott But when it comes to Reeder politicians, Americans have a different standard. We haven’t had a president without a college diploma since Harry Truman. The Washington Post reports that not one member of the U.S. Senate, doesn’t have at least a bachelor’s degree. In fact, our last three presidents all hold advanced degrees from Ivy League institutions. Is our nation better off for it? It’s debatable. Unfortunately, a college diploma has become a litmus test for some voters on whether they will support a candidate. A good case in point is Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. More than a few liberals are clicking their tongues and shaking their heads, because this presidential hopeful doesn’t have a college degree. He quit his senior year at Marquette University to take a job. There are things I like about Walker and things I don’t. But one thing that doesn’t bother me one iota is that he doesn’t have a college degree. I’m much more concerned about a person’s willingness to learn and their life experiences. Look no further than the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois. He never held a college degree but had a long and honorable career in politics and higher education. In fact, even without a college degree, he was able to found the graduate program where I received my master’s degree. He later went on to found what is now the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. Increasingly, colleges are pricing themselves out of reach of many families. Much of this comes from longstanding federal policies that have inflated tuition costs. Inevitably, the marketplace will create less costly learning alternatives. It may come in the form of online or distance learning. It may take some other form that provides learning opportunities. And to evaluate the effectiveness of such programs, the question to be asked isn’t whether people have degrees but whether they are educated.

Lyons Township High School students react to a staff rap contest at an all-school assembly.
Is school fun? Well, it should be at least some of the time. Clearly, the teachers at Lyons Township High School agree with this sentiment, in light of the “flash mob” performance they put on for students recently at the All School Assembly. Some teachers also took part in a rap battle, which must’ve been quite a sight to see (and hear). Thumbs up to Thom And Ann Serafin, who were recognized recently with the 2015 Call to Heart Award for their philanthropic efforts in support of Nazareth Academy. The Serafins have continued to support the school even after the graduation of their sons. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

Snow removal past Cass Avenue U.S. needs to take action against Westmont snow removal wasn’t terrorists groups in Middle East that much better than Downers Grove. The murder of American hostages by Muslim extremists is terrible. How does the U.S.A. stop this? First, imagine how a President Roosevelt, Eisenhower or Reagan might have responded to such murders. Immediate carpet bombing of manufacturing centers and terrorist enclaves is a good guess. With today’s technology, enhanced security and pinpoint retaliatory capability, a terrorist group would be certain of self-destruction, ordered by presidents who cared more about the safety of American citizens than political correctness.
They spend most of their time going up and down Cass Avenue in downtown Westmont. Sure, Cass Avenue is clear down to the pavement. But drive down the side streets a day or two after the snowstorm. You’re lucky if the plow went through once. I know people who live on the south side of town and whose streets were not plowed for a couple of days. Don’t give Westmont that much credit unless you only drive through downtown Westmont on Cass Avenue. See SOUND OFF, page 12

Why do people feel compelled to denigrate other religions and then wonder why there are consequences to their actions? Freedom of speech means you “can,” but does it mean you “should”? Where is the humor in mocking any religion, whether it be through political cartoons comparing Mohammed to a dog, “Saturday Night Live”-type programs making fun of Muslims and Christians, so-called “artistic” displays placing Christ immersed in urine, protesters making a mockery of religious rites for fallen servicemen at cemeteries, etc.? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if all of us recognized how sacred each individual religion is to the followers of that religion?

What happened to the children of Jackie Robinson West is shameful. Those children played their best. They did everything they were supposed to do. The adults let them down! I hope those coaches are banned from ever coaching again. To them, it was more important to win than show the boys that honesty and integrity are what counts. Imagine the hurt the coaches have caused these boys. I just hope the boys can see this for what it is and not let it destroy their hopes and dreams.

Continued from page 11 Comcast complaint This has to do with Downers Grove Comcast. I pay over $80 a month for the digital starter package and all the extra fees that they tag on with it. And yet, there is no on-screen guide to their programs. Now, they used to have such a guide on a certain channel where you could see what’s on, but now they took it away, and when you call them, they have no explanation. This is ridiculous. How are you supposed to know what’s on? Just one more bad thing about Comcast.
Downers Grove residents should feel safe on sidewalk Why is a homeowner allowed to put up a 4-foot plastic fence just inches from a public sidewalk and have the right, according to the Downers Grove Police Department, to let his pitbull and mastiff dog charge the fence as people are walking by? According to the police department, he has this right to do this because the dogs are on his property. My question is, where do his rights end and mine begin? This is a public sidewalk, and people need
to feel safe when they’re walking past. The owner should be made to put up a secure, 6-foot fence, so that you don’t feel your life is in imminent danger. ... I would really like to see an ordinance by the Downers Grove Township to not allow this to be going on, especially when the fence is right on top of a public sidewalk.

Do better next time
Once in a while, I treat myself to an Egg McMuffin on my way to work in the morning. I pass a McDonald’s on Maple Avenue in Lisle and the new one on Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove. How is it that Lisle charges $2.99, while Downers Grove charges $3.45 for the same item? This is a 46 cents difference. So, if you need an Egg McMuffin in the morning, I recommend you shop in Lisle.
Regarding the recent snow removal effort by the village of Downers Grove: The people in charge, including the mayor and anyone up for re-election, would be wise to familiarize themselves with the story of Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic and the blizzard of 1979. Remember that something as simple as a bad snowfall could be your downfall as an elected official. Please do a better job next time.

This is not a new issue. Developing countries, such as Mongolia, have attached small fees to plastic bag usage for quite a while. Very progressive. Of course, European nations have encouraged reusable bag use for a long time. It has even inspired a whole new fashion in tote bags. Our village should find creative ways to discourage disposable plastic bag usage [and] find solutions to many other environmental issues that can contribute to our community’s well-being.

Middle school students hoping to create new state symbol SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LA GRANGE HIGHLANDS – Students at La Grange Highlands Middle School have been doing some research on invertebrates – and they’re hoping one in particular will become a new symbol of the state of Illinois. Invertebrates are animals that don’t have a spine and include animals like insects, snails, clams and spiders. Fifth-grade students in La Grange Highlands Middle School teacher Jen-
nifer Carnes’ classroom got to thinking that Illinois does not yet have a state spider, so they’ve selected one to submit. Carnes said she hopes her students will learn the legislative process by submitting the zebra jumping spider as a new Illinois state symbol. They wrote letters to State Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Burr Ridge, suggesting the zebra jumping spider as a state spider. Carnes said students have heard back and Durkin will likely introduce the zebra spider as a state symbol in the coming months.
“We researched the zebra jumping spider and found it to be very common in Illinois,” Carnes said. “Our school will even have a black and white day in honor of our hopes of getting this through as new legislation.” The zebra jumping spider is a common jumping spider. As a jumping spider, it does not build a web to catch prey but jumps upon it. The spider is common in Europe and across North America and generally lives in close proximity to humans.

New book explores Burr Ridge’s history By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com
slowly began compiling their stories together. Another reason for writing the book was what Comstock called a fight against time itself. “Knowing that our family members are aging was a part of it,” Comstock said. “We’re losing the stories of a whole generation. I knew we were working against time, and I wanted those stories to be recorded. We need to get those stories down before they are lost.” Comstock also hopes the book’s publication will encourage others in Burr Ridge and surrounding communities to compile their own narratives and share them with the community. She hopes to host a “scanning party” in town where neighbors could come together with their village history to scan images and record stories that could be then shared with the Flag Creek Historical Society. “What surprised me is how much the history has stayed the same in certain ways,” Comstock said of the experience of writing the book. “Burr Ridge has always been about building community.” The book was officially released Feb. 2. “Images of America: Burr Ridge” is available for $21.99 at local retailers, online bookstores and through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com.

BURR RIDGE – It was a place that went by many names, which changed depending on who you asked. Some called it The Plainfield Road, the Joliet, The Indian Trail, or plainly, “the crick.” But all of these names taken together are today called something familiar: Burr Ridge. In a new book from Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series, author and local historian Sharon L. Comstock chronicles the history of the village from its very beginning. “I’m not a trained historian,” Comstock said. “I’m just very curious.” “Images of America: Burr Ridge” explores the history of the village through oral interviews with current residents and the descendants of some of the area’s oldest families. The book also contains more than 200 vintage images of the area and of the people who lived there. The book chronicles the village’s early years, its education history and industrialism. Though the village was incorporated in 1956, the story of Burr Ridge is much deeper, according to Comstock. In fact, it was called the village of Harvester before 1962 when it changed its name and annexed an area known as Burr Ridge Estates.
Comstock is a direct descendant of Burr Ridge pioneer David Craigmile, whose land would later become parts of Burr Ridge and Willowbrook, as well as Harvester Park. “I think what started it was when I was a features writer at [Lyons Township High School’s student newspaper] The Lion and we did a genealogy project,” Comstock said. Little did she know – until she started the project – the home she currently lives in is on that very same land her great-great-grandfather settled at Madison Avenue and Plainfield Road. In fact, after looking at old maps of the area, she believes her house sits almost exactly on the site of the old farmhouse her great-grandfather built. “It is pure happenstance,” Comstock said of the coincidence of living on her ancestor’s land. Comstock said she decided to start work on the book after reviewing artifacts owned by her family that weren’t in archives and decided there was material there to begin a history of the area. In researching the 127page book, Comstock worked closely with the village of Burr Ridge, the Indian Prairie Public Library and the Flag Creek Historical Society. After talking with people in town, she would track down others in their family tree and

We hear with more than our ears: gestures, body language, and eye contact work together to enhance communication. For hearing impaired people, these factors are even more important. Audiologist Dr. Susan Rogan explains that even with top-quality hearing aids, some patients benefit from extra effort to boost understanding. She shares communication strategies that help hearing impaired people hear and comprehend better: “Before talking, get the hearing impaired person’s attention by saying his or her name. If they’re washing dishes and don’t know you’ve started a conversation, they may miss the first part of what you’re saying. Make sure they know you’re speaking to them. “Look the person you’re talking to in the eye, and face him, so he can focus on your conversation. These are good communication skills for everyone, not just the hearing impaired.” She adds that nothing thwarts a conversation more than the “dreaded
W” word. “When you’re trying to talk with grandma who’s hearing impaired, and she can’t hear you and shouts, ‘What?,’ both parties grow frustrated. The result is often an exasperated, ‘Nevermind!’ and no one’s satisfied.” She cites additional tips to promote communication: Speak clearly, slowly, but naturally without shouting or exaggerating mouth movements; avoid complex sentences or sudden changes of topics; minimize background noise; paraphrase; and use pictures when possible. “In conversation, talkers naturally drop their voice at the end of a sentence. This makes it challenging for a hearing impaired person to understand the complete sentence,” she says. Rogan adds that while some hearing impaired people don’t lip read, they may speech read (using visual clues of lip and facial movements), so avoid eating, chewing, or smoking while talking. She urges the hearing impaired to develop good listening skills, and not bluff understanding, but to give people feedback on what works best for them. WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION.
PERSONAL ATTENTION. At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, we give our students the attention they deserve. More than 80 percent of our undergraduate class sections have fewer than 30 students, and our student-faculty ratio of less than 16-to-1 gives students the opportunity to thrive. SIU faculty provide our students with real-world experiences that translate to competitive career opportunities. We stay true to our roots as a university with the heart of a small college plus the brains of a major, internationally recognized research school.

The Lions are hoping the experience gained from the two games against the Red Devils with full crowds and plenty of noise will help come playoff time. “This game is definitely a playoff atmosphere,” O’Malley said. “It’s going to prepare us for the future. When a game comes around like this again we’re going to be prepared because of these games.” The Lions had four players score in double figures. Harrison Niego led with 15 points. Connor Niego and Jaquan Phipps had 11 points each, and O’Malley finished with 10. “For the most part the whole game we did a good job sharing the ball, finding the open guy,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “In high school you don’t get to play in too many games that have an atmosphere like that. The kids played well in the circumstances.” One extra twist during the game was that LT senior Brendan Swinehart made a half-court shot to win a new car after the third quarter. The LT student section poured onto the court to celebrate with him while the two teams huddled during the timeout. They quickly cleared for the fourth quarter to begin. When the game ended, the students rushed the court a second time.

LA GRANGE – Friday’s boys basketball game against Hinsdale Central had a little bit of everything for Lyons Township. It had a big crowd, a big game with a lot on the line and it even had a court-rushing – after the third quarter. One thing that had to be decided later, however, was the West Suburban Silver title. LT beat the Red Devils 51-38 to pull two games ahead with two left in conference play. A day later the Lions wrapped up the conference title by beating Proviso West 52-41. It is LT’s first conference title in boys basketball since the 200910 season. The conference title is big, but the Hinsdale Central game is one that will live long in the memories of the players involved. The packed crowd urged on the Lions to a wireto-wire victory. “It’s incredible,” senior Harrison Niego said. “You go to college and rarely do you get that [atmosphere] in a college environment. To have it here and the students at LT are awesome. It’s good that Hinsdale has support, too. We really showed out today and you couldn’t hear anything. “The freshmen game was filled up. That’s insane.” Danny O’Malley scored LT’s first eight points to help the Lions get out to a 13-2 lead. The Lions led 30-15 early in the third quarter, their biggest lead of the game, before the Red Devils went on an 11-0 run to get back in the game. Central got as close as 3229, but Niego scored the next

Sectional champ LT looks for state success By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Although Lyons Township’s girls gymnastics team is the two-time defending state champion, this state trip Friday and Saturday at Palatine High School is completely different. While seniors Kelsy Kurfirst and Kelly Ryser are making their fourth state trips, freshmen Julia Cozzi, Sarah Halm and Sonia Slusarczyk and junior newcomer Natalie Cozzi comprised the rest of the lineup that comfortably won the Hinsdale Central sectional Feb. 11 with 144.35 points despite three falls and other errors. “It’ll be fun going to state for the first time and get the feel for it,” Halm said. “I’ve been thinking about it. I’m really happy that we made it, but I’m not really happy about the way we made it because it wasn’t one of our best meets.” The Lions still posted the fifth-highest sectional score among the eight team qualifiers after their season-high 146.90 was the state’s second-highest regional score. Kurfirst advanced to state automatically in four of the five events with top-five sectional finishes. She won balance beam (9.425), was second on vault (9.625), and third on uneven bars (9.475) and allaround (37.575). Earning at-large individual state berths were Ryser in all-around (36.475), uneven bars and beam (8.95), Julia Cozzi on beam (8.95) and Halm on floor exercise (9.425). The sectional was bittersweet for Kurfirst. The twotime defending individual state champion on floor did not qualify for state on that event because she had trouble landing her double pike flip and scored 9.05, shy of the 9.375 at-large state cut. Last year, Kurfirst also was third at state in allaround, vault and beam. She shared the 2012 uneven bars state title. “It’s frustrating, especially on floor. To not even qualify

Lyons Township’s Kelly Ryser competes on the balance beam Feb. 11 at the Hinsdale Central sectional. Ryser earned three state meet berths as the Lions locked up a team spot at state. for state stinks a little,” Kurfirst said. “That feeling probably won’t go away for a while, but I’d like to at least use that as motivation to make up for it on the other events and maybe all-around.” Prairie Ridge co-op (149.25 sectional score), second to LT in 2014, is the overwhelming team favorite at state. Fremd (146.95) and Geneva (146.00) were the only other teams to exceed scores of 145 at sectionals. “I’m not going for a place or a number (at state),” LT coach Kari Karubas said.
“What I need to have happen is for them to come together at the right time with the right technique under the right situation with handling the pressure.” Kurfirst and Ryser hope to encourage and teach LT’s state newcomers. “I’m honestly not going to make many individual goals. I just want to enjoy competing and whatever happens, happens,” Kurfirst said. “I just want to do the best that I can and hopefully end on a good note.”
DOWNERS GROVE – Just moments after accomplishing one goal, Zach Villarreal immediately set a new one. The Lyons Township sophomore stepped off the awards stand with a fourth-place medal at 120 pounds at the Downers Grove North wrestling sectional to earn his first state tournament berth, then immediately set his sights on state success. “It’s a great feeling,” Villarreal said of qualifying for state. “That was my goal, but now that it’s through my head [that I’m going to state], the goal’s placing. That’s it.” Villarreal narrowly lost his semifinal match against Marist’s Nick Lukanich, but rebounded with an overtime win in a backdraw semifinal to make it to the third place match and lock up his state berth. Getting through a tough sectional, which featured three wrestlers ranked in the top-5 in the state at 120 by illinoismatmen.com, is a confidence boost for Villarreal. “It’s a positive,” he said. “I look at the rankings every now and then, so knowing I lost to Lukanich and he’s No. 2 and it went down to the very end,
I know I can wrestle with anyone.” Villarreal’s fellow LT sophomore Johnny Mologousis won his first two sectional matches to advance to the 145-pound title match. He placed second, but earned his second state tournament berth and feels better prepared for state meet success this time around. “I think this year I can get a lot more accomplished,” Mologousis said. “Last year, being a freshman, I was like a deer caught in headlights and I kind of froze up out there. This year I think it’s going to be a lot better.” Mologousis will try for his first state meet victory when the tournament begins Thursday, and is peaking at the right time to make it happen. “The past few weeks we’ve been working on my feet a lot more and working on different tie-ups to get to my shots, and it’s shown a lot of results lately so I think that’s going to a big thing downstate,” he said. The state tournament begins with first round matches Thursday. Ezra Avery, Mac Casella, Taylor Curlin, Elias Garcia, Jack Hollinger, Nick Spacek, Frankie Walsh and Tyler Zeman also wrestled at the sectional for LT but came up short of state meet berths.
