Second grade students at Congress Park Elementary in Brookfield are preparing to give their first speech presentation March 4 as part of a class project. They weren’t alone, as members of the Lyons Township High School Speech Team, along with coaches Kirsten Manthei and Chris Bass, assisted. The LT students were on hand to help the second-graders not only complete their project but also help them with writing and delivering their speech. LA GRANGE – Located behind Q-BBQ is owner Michael Lapidus’ latest diner venture with the Hot Dog and Burger Co. The restaurant recently reopened with a new look and with a new menu.

According to Lapidus, the change in decor and food came after listening to his customers.

“This was a clothing shop before we took it over,” said Lapidus of first opening. “We thought that the town could use a nice hot dog and burger place. When we first opened four years ago, we just took off.”

Though an initial success, their original menu was more limited. According to Lapidus, creating a more contemporary menu and wanting to make the idea of the diner being a classic hangout again meant a rebirth for the Hot Dog and Burger Co. “We found that our customers’ tastes were changing,” he said Friday.

“So, we wanted to offer more gourmet [options] while still offering classic items. Your kid can get a classic Chicago-style dog and you can get a stroganoff burger.”

For company COO Valentine Kopjo, the restructuring of the Hot Dog and Burger Co. started, almost literally, from the ground up.

“We started by installing a new floor,” said Kopjo. “Then, after the floor, we fixed the tables, and after the tables we just changed the whole menu.”

What has been changed and expanded are the walls of classic and hardto-find sodas. According to Kopjo, the concept of having a total of 71 sodas such as Dad’s root beer, Cherrywine, Moxie and Crush, was to bring long-familiar flavors to customers.

“It was Michael’s idea,” said Kopjo.

“We hoped the people would appreciate the nostalgia. People would be like, ‘My grandpa used to drink this.’ Or, ‘I haven’t seen this since I was a kid.’”

LT’s jazz ensemble is honored finalist in NYC

LA GRANGE – The Lyons Township High School Jazz Ensemble was recently selected as a finalist in one of the most coveted student band competitions in the country.

The jazz ensemble will take part in the 20th annual Essentially Ellington Competition hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Competition is especially fierce in the Essentially Ellington program. A selection of six transcriptions from jazz legend Duke Ellington are made available free of charge to all schools and performing groups in the United States and Canada. Of the six transcripts, three recordings are submitted to the competition.

This year alone, the Essentially Ellington program received 3,200 copies of music,

according to a news release.

Adding to the challenge is the inclusion of all conglomerate band and fine arts high schools. Out of the 15 finalists selected, seven are conglomerate bands or from fine arts high schools. In the 20 years of the Essentially Ellington programs creation, very few bands from Illinois are made finalists. This year, LT holds the distinct honor of being the only band from Illinois selected.

The work is far from done for the LT Jazz Ensemble. As a finalist, Jazz at Lincoln Center will give LT $500 and will send a clinician from New York to work with the LT students in a free, four-hour workshop.

On May 7, the LT jazz ensemble will travel to New York City where they will spend three days involved in even more workshops, jam sessions, rehearsals and performances with Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Finally on May 9, the Competition & Festival will conclude with a concert and awards ceremony featuring the three top-placing bands and the Jazz and Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

“I could not be more proud of our student musicians,” LT Band Director Mark Dahl said. “Needless to say, this is an education opportunity of a lifetime.”

LT officials head back to the classroom

dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – Brian Stachacz stepped out of his role as director of Business Services for Lyons Township High School and back into his former role as a history teacher Feb. 23.

The one-day switch in professions was all part of the LT Scholarship Raffle Contest. As one of the lucky few to be picked, Stachacz relieved Jessica Drogos, LT’s Advanced Placement European history teacher and was able to conduct a classroom once again.

“I forgot how much I miss the classroom,” Stachacz said. “The students were terrific; they were engaged and great listeners and participated in the discussion.”

Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the LT Scholarship Raffle Contest is open to all contributing employees, with around eight to 10 names picked every year.

The raffle finally closes out with Superintendent Timothy Kilrea working, for one day, under Student Support Counselor Anne Strickland and Principal Brian Waterman, teaching a history class in place of Ben LaFontaine.

The staff and faculty of LT High School have donated nearly $11,000 in senior scholarships, which will be awarded at the Senior Honors Day Assembly in May. Parents and members of the community interested in making a donation to the scholarship fund may mail a check made out to LTHS General Scholarship Fund and sent to LTHS College Center Room 148, 100 S. Brainard Ave., La Grange, IL 60525.

Donations may be made in honor of current and former teachers, who will be notified of the donation.

Opposition takes odd tack across state line MADISON, Wis. – It’s not every day I interview someone dressed in nothing but bright-red long johns and a medieval Viking helmet standing in the middle of a state capitol rotunda.

But that’s what I found myself doing recently when reporting at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

That statehouse was filled with union angst as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of activists protested a measure to make Wisconsin a right-to-work state. As Wisconsin senators debated the measure, protesters misbehaved. They hollered and screamed in the rotunVIEWS da. Some waved signs and Scott placards laden with obsceniReeder ties. Scores were hauled out of the Senate gallery by state troopers after disrupting the proceedings.

So much for being staid Midwesterners.

I’ve covered the Illinois Statehouse for 15 years and before that the Nevada Legislature. I’ve never witnessed anything under a dome quite like what I saw in Madison this past week.

My only thought after observing the shenanigans: They sure aren’t doing themselves any favors. After all, it’s kind of hard to have a serious public policy conversation with someone clad only in long johns.

As I was standing in line to enter the Senate gallery, the fellow behind me explained that Scott Walker engages in mind control and a group called ALEC had people locked up for being delusional.

The problem with sanctimony is that it indicts those pointing the finger.

Free speech is a precious thing. It can be used effectively or not particularly well. In fact, one could argue that the folks demonstrating in Madison these past four years are among the people most responsible for Gov. Scott Walker’s rise to national political prominence.

As union demonstrations spiraled out of control, rank-andfile voters found themselves identifying more with Walker.

They couldn’t bring themselves to support what they saw as an increasingly radical labor movement. During the past four years, Walker has won three races for governor, including a recall pushed by the unions.

I asked the fellow in long underwear why Walker keeps winning and his answer was telling: “I have no idea.”

Maybe he ought to look in the mirror.

Don’t balance budget by taking from towns

If Gov. Bruce Rauner wants to get local government officials on board with his state budget proposal, he’s got a long way to go.

The state’s finances are in bad shape from years of mismanagement, and Rauner has his work cut out for him if he’s going to fix that. Any solution he proposes is guaranteed to make someone angry.

One of his ideas was to take money from municipal income tax reserves. That part has local officials furious.

“This isn’t solving the problem,” Brookfield Village President Kit Ketchmark said. “… This is our money. It’s not something the state gives to us.”

“I think the local share is an example of inadvertently drawing us into the discussion and passing the problems of Springfield onto local government,” La Grange Village President Tom Livingston said.

There’s no doubt the path to a healthy Illinois budget will require some toughto-swallow cuts to services somewhere.

spending more than you make and there’s no immediate prospects for increasing income, then the only option is to cut costs.

That’s true for the average homeowner or business in Berwyn, Brookfield, Riverside or La Grange, and it’s true for the state, too.

The question then becomes where can we tolerate those cuts? Local governments have been making tough choices about their budgets for years, certainly since the depths of the 2008 recession at least. The state, on the other hand, largely refused to make tough choices during the Blagojevich years and arguably made the wrong tough choices during the Quinn years.

We’re going to have to give up things we’d rather not lose. It’s going to hurt and it’s going to impact people’s lives, and that’s a terrible thing. But to not make those tough choices now is to just delay the inevitable and make things worse for everyone.

Gov. Rauner will continue to have difficult decisions to make, and we don’t envy him for the task. But there must be better places to start than by casting an eye at the ledgers of governmental bodies that already have tightened their belts as much as they dare.

Using clean, dry hands, wearers need to wipe off their hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth. Rogan cautions against using water, cleaning fluids, or alcohol for cleaning, which could damage the devices.

“Just like eye glasses, you may not need to clean them every day, but as least inspect your hearing aids and wipe them off to remove debris. Hearing aids always come with cleaning tools to help get the job done. Specially made audio wipes may be helpful, too,” she says.

Cleaned hearing aids should be stored at night in a designated container, safely away from pets and children.

bathroom or other humid environment.

Leaving them in a hot or cold car is not advised, as temperature changes may affect hearing aids’ sensitive circuitry and performance.

Rogan encourages her patients to bring their hearing aids in for a professional cleaning every six months, or more frequently if needed, which may extend the hearing aids’ life. Typically, hearing aids need to be replaced every five years.

Keeping ears clean, especially for hearing aid wearers, is important. Rogan advises to never jab cotton swabs in your ears, which only pushes wax deeper in your ear, where it may get trapped, and possibly impacted or infected. Earwax helps keep the ear canal clean, and keeps dirt away from the eardrum. As earwax dries, any jaw movements (such as talking or eating), automatically help move wax away.

The only ear cleaning needed, Rogan says, is covering the tip of your pinky finger with a damp washcloth, and cleaning the ear’s outside crevices.

The art competition began in 1982 as a way to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.

The winning entry will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year and the winner will receive two round-trip tickets to fly to Washington, D.C., in June for the exhibition opening. Runners-up will have their artwork prominently displayed in my district offices for one year.

14 Police chief: Galena tanker explosion highlights need for local training

jsinopoli@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – The derailment and explosion of a freight train’s tanker cars Thursday in Galena highlights a pressing need for state funding of local emergency training to respond to such an incident, Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said Friday.

On Feb. 25, Weitzel sent a letter to Gov. Bruce Rauner asking for increased state funding to train local first responders in the event of such a derailment. Weitzel also asked for the state to make mapping of freight trains carrying crude oil shipments more available to local law enforcement.

On Thursday, a freight train carrying 105 tanker cars had six derail and explode near Galena, sending billowing black clouds of smoke over a historically significant area of the city, which includes the historic home of President Ulysses S. Grant.

Thursday’s disaster underscores a terrifying occurrence that has become more frequent, Weitzel said Friday.

And, for first responders such as Riverside’s police officers and firefighters, an emergency they may be illequipped to handle.

Despite the fact the city of Galena is 161 miles from downtown Riverside, the crash struck home with Weitzel – the train that derailed was on a Burlington Northern line, he said.

“If we were to have an incident in Riverside, we would have to use every resource from miles around, and I’m not even sure that would be enough,”

Weitzel said.

He pointed to an incident in 2013 when a train carrying crude oil derailed and several cars exploded near Casselton, N.D. The city of Casselton, with a population of 2,500 residents, saw its first responders quickly overwhelmed by the emergency situation, Weitzel said.

“During the first few hours, the closest response is frequently from small town fire chiefs, police officers and

medical personnel. Riverside is in that category,” Weitzel wrote to Rauner.

In addition to his request for funding to train first responders, Weitzel said local police should be given more information about what freight trains are carrying through their communities.

Weitzel called for an information database to be provided by railroad companies for law enforcement and first responders, which would allow those first responders the ability to react more quickly during such emergencies.

“We’re dependent on the railroads themselves because they know what’s on these trains,” Weitzel said.

Weitzel said that trains’ contents are not released out of fear that the knowledge could be used for criminal motives.

“I don’t buy the terrorist thing,” he said. “I think we should be able to know what these trains are carrying. I think the public needs to know what’s coming through. There’s 60 trains that go through Riverside in a 24-hour period.”

As for funding for his requests, Weitzel said he believes the state should mandate railroads to provide both the training and the database on a statewide level.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint.

Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat.

I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark.

The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis.

Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience.

The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks.

There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

The Lyons Township boys basketball star had 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals but saw his high school career come to a premature end Friday night.

In an entertaining, taut game that saw 18 lead changes, the top-seeded Lions (23-6) were upset 60-57 by No. 8-seed Metea Valley in the championship game of the Class 4A Proviso West regional.

LT’s largest lead was four points late in the third quarter, while Metea Valley (1812), which extended its winning streak to 10 games and advanced to Tuesday’s East Aurora sectional semifinal against No. 4-seed Hinsdale Central, never led by more than five.

“The credit goes to Metea,” LT coach Tom Sloan said.

“They played very well. They got offensive rebounds and loose balls. They made big shots and big plays and our kids fought to the end.”

Indeed, despite missing 16 free throws, the Lions still had a great chance to win at the end. Trailing 56-51, the Lions rallied behind Niego, whose two free throws with 43.2 seconds left pulled them within 58-57.

After Metea’s Mark Konkle split a pair of free throws with 2.9 left, Harrison Niego rebounded, raced up the court and fired a half-court shot that caromed off the back of the rim as time expired.

“Even with nine seconds left, I thought it was going to happen,” Sloan said. “Harrison had the ball and Connor got a wide-open three that would have put us up by one.

Thought it was going in, but it didn’t go in.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get a bounce when we needed one late, but credit goes to Metea. They won the game. It wasn’t like the game was given to them. They won it so they deserve to move on.”

Senior Jaquan Phipps, who along with Niego will likely play in college but has yet to decide where, had 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Lions.

Jackson made all 12 of his free throw attempts in the Class 4A Leyden regional final, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to seal RB’s 67-61 win against Oak Park-River Forest.

“My teammates got a lot of confidence in me and I just stepped up to the line and made my free throws,” Jackson said. “I take a deep breath, look at the rim and shoot.”

Jackson scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs, who improved to 26-3 and won the program’s first regional title since 2011.

Smith got RB going early with the team’s first seven points and 11 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs raced out to a 17-5 lead after the quarter. Smith finished with 18 points.

“It means a lot to us,” Jackson said of the regional title. “It was a lot of hard work and dedication.”

The Bulldogs beat the Huskies 6257 Nov. 29, but Smith said that game played out differently.

“Their lineup is totally different,” Smith said. “Their play style was different, too. We knew coming in to expect Dallis Flowers to have a good game. We were just trying to shut him down.”

Flowers scored a game-high 24 points for the Huskies, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

RB survived despite leading scorer Sam Johnson fouling out with 6:56 left in the game and scoring five points.

“Sam has been huge for us this year and other guys stepped it up,” RB coach Tom McCloskey said. “Mark got us off early, he played great. Daniko had a great night in many different ways. A lot of guys hit shots.”
