Divine Infant Jesus School wins $5K in Earth Month Challenge By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com WESTCHESTER – Students of Divine Infant Jesus School, 1640 Newcastle Ave., were recently well-rewarded for their efforts in energy conservation. The school was named the grandprize winner of Commonwealth Edison’s Earth Month Challenge on June 1 and received a check for $5,000 and an end-of-year ice-cream social. The Earth Month Challenge was started to increase awareness about the need for energy conservation. Almost 6,000 students from 17 participating elementary schools worked with their teachers and parents on how to save energy at school and at home. According to ComEd, students were able to save more than 19,900 watt-hours of electricity, which is enough to power two homes for a whole year. “I was very impressed with the presentation at our opening assembly for the Earth Month Challenge,” said Leonard Gramarossa, principal of Divine Infant Jesus School. “The students, faculty

ers kept on motivating our students to do their best to encourage their parents to be energy smart. All in all, a very worthwhile learning experience and we are very fortunate to be the top school this year.”

BROOKFIELD – When Brookfield Zoo closed down it’s children’s zoo in January 2013, they said goodbye to a piece of history that had existed at the zoo since 1954. At the children’s zoo, kids could ride a horse, pet a calf and feed a goat – getting closer to the animals than they ever could at regular exhibits. But the closure was the beginning of something bigger and, according to Brookfield Zoo, better. Boasting a larger area, new attractions and a variety of new animals, Brookfield Zoo will open the Hamill Family Wild Encounters exhibit July 1. According to Glenn Granat, curator of the Hamill Play Zoo and Wild Encounters, the new exhibit will stay true to the original concept of the children’s zoo. “This is the rebirth of the former children’s zoo, and there are old and new components Granat said. “We wanted to increase the amount of interaction with our guests. We have typical zoo animals, but we also have ambassador animals. The whole philosophy is to connect people with nature, and the best way is to get them up close with nature.” While classic children’s zoo animals will make their return, the ambassador animals Granat speaks of includes red pandas, reindeer and wallabies.

A young patron of the Brookfield Zoo meets a wallaby. The Brookfield Zoo will open its new Wild Encounters exhibit July 1, which replaces the former children’s zoo. The new Wild Encounters exhibit lets children get up close with a wider range of animals. The Wild Encounters exhibit also is a full architectural makeover for the former children’s zoo area, with an emphasis on creating environments benefiting the animals as well as guests. “The big change is the geography,” Granat said. “We have big hills, which will be new to people from Illinois. It’s got a really nice feel to it. ... [The exhibit has] a lot of outdoor space where people can engage

with the animals.” With Wild Encounters opening, the new exhibit will be a permanent replacement for the children’s zoo while maintaining its legacy. “This is a very permanent exhibit,” Granat said. “This is part of the ongoing initiative to improve the facilities for the animals and our guests. It’s dynamic and cutting edge. I’ve been here for 28 years and I’m blown away.”

Happy Birthday to the United States Army 240 Years Old on June 14, 2015 (SU) FLAG DAY God Bless all who served our Great Nation Especially those who gave their lives... ARLINGTON In Arlington while crosses grow Along the foothills row by row. And up the gentle slopes they flow. Then circling round, down they go in gentle curves to the river below Lost memories in the evening glow. Beneath chalklike markers at parade rest, Sleep fallen heroes at the military crest. They who died and did their best, Then suddenly a body-bag guest, A plastic shroud, a wooden vest An unexpected turn in a dead man’s chest. Columns to the left, columns to the right Ghostly shadows dot the night. Those who fought and fought the fright And those who found and lost the fight For honor, for duty, for country. Tonight, A Polished Sentinel, low steps the hill, A Silent Soldier who drills with skill, With measured cadence, with iron will, In silent tribute to those who kill, Who try and die in turn - yet still, We gratefully honor those who fill Arlington.

Countryside’s Center for Independence takes part in study By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com COUNTRYSIDE – Before his stroke, Ted Waltmire of Oak Brook Terrace worked at the Downers Grove Public Library managing the library’s computer network. “I had my stroke when I was 55,” Waltmire said. “It affected my left leg, my left ankle, my left arm and my left fingers. I attempted to go back to work as a librarian … it was work I couldn’t do. So I handled the children’s library, [but] there is nothing sedentary about working at the library. So, I opted for retirement.” Now 71, Waltmire recently took part in a study to see if a technique called conductive therapy could help him regain more control of his body and lead to greater independence. The study brought together Roberta O’Shea, professor of Physical Therapy at Governors State University, and Maureen Michalski of the Center for Independence, 100 Plainfield Road in Countryside. The Center for Independence has used conductive education since its founding in 1998 to help children with disabilities. The Center for Independence joined with O’Shea to see how their approach would work for stroke patients.

“They had us do some crazy things. We’d take our weak hand and crack peanuts or we’d dig through clay to find coins. We also ran an obstacle course with stairs, inclines and tricky stuff for people who haven’t quite regained their balance.” Ted Waltmire Study participant O’Shea put Waltmire and three other participants through an experimental 10-week intensive research study program using conductive education. “It’s an intensive motor training approach,” Michalski said. “It looks at rehab as an education; you have to teach their body how to move after a brain injury. What’s unique to the therapy is that it is [held in] a group setting so you can work on the social context.” According to Michalski, the Center for Independence lesson plan involved forms of repetitive activities, narration of actions and working with the weaker parts of the body. For Waltmire, the process was bizarre and at times frustrating. “They had us do some crazy things,” Waltmire said. “We’d take our weak hand and crack peanuts or we’d dig through clay to find coins. We also ran an obstacle course with stairs, inclines

and tricky stuff for people who haven’t quite regained their balance.” The purpose, according to O’Shea, was to utilize the concept of neuroplasticity: the idea that stroke victims can create new pathways in their brains to circumvent the parts that have been damaged. “Nothing like this had been done before in the U.S. to the best of my knowledge,” O’Shea said. “I thought if we could apply this intervention, people could become more capable and increase their participation. Our study shows that hand function improved, independence improved and neural pathways have improved, which is phenomenal.” In time, the combination of doing repetitive tasks in a group setting yielded results for Waltmire and his fellow participants. “They did a lot of challenging things,” Waltmire said. “[But] it was

great to see the other participants [also] struggle. By watching what they did, it improved your own performance and it made me realize that I came a long way in my day-to-day activities.” According to O’Shea, preliminary studies at Governors State University showed a change in neural circuitry when participants were given an MRI after the exercises. For Michalski, the Center for Independence plans to adopt the conductive education program as a full-time program for stroke patients beginning in September. “They were proud to show they can now lift things, one can now reach behind their back,” Michalski said. “They’re brainstorming how to overcome their complications; they now are more functional.” For Waltmire, he notices the difference in small ways. But, he said, those small ways have paved the road to a greater life. “When you live with this everyday, you don’t notice the minor things that are a big result of this class,” Waltmire said. “I can now close the door with my left hand, and I wouldn’t have had the thought to try it if it wasn’t for this class. You have to go beyond what is expected of you, and I have so much of my life left to live.”

Mini village teaches safety lessons for kids By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com

WESTERN SPRINGS – Children in Western Springs can get a lesson in safety from 4 to 5 p.m. June 14 in a village built just for them at the upcoming grand opening of the Western Springs Safety Village, 1500 Walker St. The safety village is a replica of Western Springs, scaled down to 150 feet by 75 feet, and includes its own miniature businesses, miniature traffic lights and even a miniature water tower. The village, which will welcome 150 new students June 15, was created in memory of Katie Satkamp, who died at the age of 7 after being struck by a school bus in Hinsdale in 1982. The purpose of the village is to educate children on multiple safety techniques, such as buckling up in a vehicle and how to properly cross the street. With the new permanent address, the village also will be able to welcome additional children from neighboring communities, according to a news release. “We are thrilled to have the safety village as a permanent feature of the Western Springs community,” said Chief Patrick J. Kenny, director of Fire and EMS for Western Springs. “Lessons in fire, strangers, railroad, toy, playground and water safety are taught with the aid of songs, stories, robots, puppets, movies, crafts, live play characters, as well as teachers, police and firefighters.”

Making the most of your outdoor living area requires a design strategy. Similar to crafting a bedroom, living room, or other indoor space, it’s important to take stock of what you have, decide what to sell or give away, develop a budget, and visualize the intended final result. Outdoor spaces are similar to indoor spaces when considering layout and color, but have additional concerns such as lighting, weather, privacy, and a need for shade. A good layout requires natural walkways between furniture pieces. Conversation and eating areas should complement each other, and space should be reserved for a grill or an outdoor fireplace. Finishing touches include adding layers, textures, artwork, and plants in varying heights to provide visual interest. Rugs, pillows, trellises with climbing vines, a hammock, and other accessories can add color and make a big impact. A fountain creates soothing water sounds, and vintage items will add

eclectic elements to your space. For lighting, lanterns with candles create a soft, romantic glow. If outlets are available, strings of electric lights add a festive vibe. Create privacy by planting trees or shrubs around the area’s perimeter. If the space has a roof, install a curtain rod with flowing curtains that can be opened or closed as desired. Lattice walls offer privacy but still let in light and a breeze, and can be complemented by colorful plantings. If shade is a concern, a triangular sail, a large umbrella, or installation of a pergola are options to consider. Weather resistant wicker, cushions, rugs, pillows, and artwork are preferable, due to their low maintenance. The LeaderShop gives youth the knowledge and tools to grow into confident leaders and to become community-minded individuCOMMUNITY als. I am also grateful for the VOICE volunteer opportunities The Christy LeaderShop has given me because it can be so enlightPenrod ening to learn about and help others. One of the volunteer activities I have participated in is the annual summer work trip The LeaderShop sponsors. Last year, I volunteered for the trip to Washington, Ill., for tornado clean-up. We high school volunteers and LeaderShop staff members were able to clear acres of debris from two families’ homes. Although picking up garbage doesn’t seem like much, it kick-started those families’ rebuilding process and reassured that town that there is always hope. This year, I am excited we are traveling to New Bern, N.C., for another amazing service trip and will be helping families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by hurricanes and tornadoes. New Bern has dealt with a number of devastating events during the past few years. In late 2011, Hurricane Irene devastated the coastal areas of northeastern North Carolina. Thousands of families were affected, and homes were flooded or damaged by the weather. In 2012, the remnants of Hurricane Isaac affected many of those same homes. Many families still had not recovered when a series of tornadoes hit that same area in 2014. I cannot imagine my community having to go through what people in New Bern have experienced, but I know that people come together in the worst situations. For nine days this month, 28 of us high school volunteers and eight adults will be helping to repair damaged homes by tearing out and replacing floors, walls and insulation. We also will help with other necessary projects and with building new homes for families whose homes were not salvageable. Last year, I found out that pulling a keychain or necklace that has sentimental value from a pile of rubble can have a ton of meaning for the victim of a natural disaster. That’s one of the things that makes me happy to go on the summer work trips because you start believing in what you can do for other people. We cannot wait to help the families in New Bern and give them a light in their darkness.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that the emerald ash borer came through and killed many of our beautiful ash trees, now many communities lack the funds to replace those lost trees. Fortunately the Brookfield-La Grange Park Lions Club is stepping up with an online fundraising campaign for those towns. They’re hoping to raise $4,500 to plant 100 new trees, which sounds like a very reachable goal. For information and to help out, visit the club’s website at www.blplions.org.

paths. I would respectfully ask motorists who are in a hurry use state highways where bicyclists are restricted. Bike paths are great, but they do not provide a pathway to most destinations and bicyclists are required to use the street. Bicycles are a legal and environmentally friendly form of transportation. Remember also that bicyclists may take the entire lane of the roadway when they feel it is safest and that drivers are required by law to pass with at least three feet of clearance.

Unfair Florida

I would like to know why the commissioner of hockey, the city of Tampa and the state of Florida are allowing the Tampa [Bay] hockey team to discriminate against the fans from Chicago. I don’t think that’s right. My family was going to go to Florida for vacation. We have changed our plans now. They don’t want our money over there, we’re going to go to California instead, and I hope everyone else does the same.

Why [do] bicycle riders have their own lane and choose not to stay in that lane and follow the rules of the road like everyone else has to? They never stop at stop lights or signal their intentions to make a right turn and also be aware of people in the crosswalk. I feel if they’re riding in the streets, they should be held accountable like we motorists.

We could not believe our eyes tearing up the street on Downing Avenue, which they had just dug out and resurfaced three weeks earlier. Talk about a waste of time and money. They spent three days tearing and pouring asphalt on a 5-by-40-foot patch of street on Downing, only to tear it up again along with several other sections of the street. Downing Avenue is like a jigsaw puzzle. Driving on it is a hazard. … Shame on Westchester management.

So I hear Nazareth Academy wants to install lights for their football field so they can have night games so they can attract the people from the city of Chicago to their nice neighborhood. It’s ridiculous. They’re the only game in town on Sunday, they need to market it better and they’ll get their bigger crowds. I hope the La Grange Park Village Board rejects their request for putting in lights and destroying the character of that neighborhood, even if it is only for a few nights a year.

So You Want to Get a Bearded Dragon by Dr. Jim Antonicic DVM Dear Pet Talk: Our son is interested in getting a bearded dragon. Do they make good pets and what sort of special care do they need?

degrees, a warm side at 86 degrees, and a basking area at 90-100 degrees. An under-tank heating pad can create the warm zone, and a heat lamp the “sunny” basking area. A UV lamp can be set up with a timer to simulate a 12 hour light and dark photoperiod. UV light allows the dragon to synthesize vitamin D, a nutrient critical to the absorption of calcium. Without this, the lizard will develop weak bones, a common problem of pet lizards of all kinds. Bearded dragons need to be offered plant materials as well as various prey items such as crickets, mealworms, king worms, and wax worms. As the dragon gets bigger, you can offer pinkie or fuzzy mice. Outdoor insects can carry pesticides and insecticides that can harm your beardie. Prey items can be coated with a vitamin powder prior to feeding to help boost calcium levels. Fruits and vegetables you can offer include green beans, squash, carrots, escarole, parsely, cilantro, mustard, dandelion, collards, raspberries, mango and cantaloupe. Fresh water should be provided in a low-rim bowl. Bearded dragons make fascinating and gentle pets. They adapt well to handling, are relatively easy to care for in confinement, and have minimal health problems if well cared for. Knowledge of proper care is critical for many of the exotic pets. After acquiring a reptile, bird, or small mammal, visit us at Merrick Animal Hospital to make sure your new friend is healthy and to learn how to best care for it. Call us today for an appointment at 708-485- 6500.

to Eddy and the former USC Trojan leaving it to Mewis, who dribbled past several defenders and slotted inside the right post to make it 1-0. The Flash never looked back after finding the net once, as Eddy added a goal to her assist halfway through the second period to double the home side’s advantage. Williams streaked down the right flank and sent a low cross toward the feet of the California native, who beat a defender to the ball inside the box before flicking it up to herself and then over onrushing netminder Dalton with an exquisite touch. Western New York would put the icing on the cake in the 75th minute with perhaps the most impressive of three well-taken goals. Finding herself facing the Chicago area with few options available, Fields cut to her left and fired a left-footed laser beam into the upper ninety from 30 yards out. The wonder tally was made possible by Becky Edwards, who had freed herself up with a skillful move in midfield and found her teammate with a pinpoint accurate long pass up the field. Just as it seemed the home side might be able to earn a clean sheet on top of three points, the Red Stars were awarded a penalty kick following a chaotic sequence that saw substitute forward Mary Luba go down in the area and a Flash player subsequently handle the ball. Determined to tie Crystal Dunn atop the NWSL goal-scoring charts, Chicago striker Huerta stepped up to the spot, only to see Jones dive to her right and parry the waist-high attempt wide of the post. Huerta did find the net on the ensuing corner kick. Gilliland met DiBernardo’s in-swinger with her head to rattle the crossbar, Cara Walls managing to redirect the rebound against the right post while wrestling a pair of Flash players on the doorstep, followed by a simple tap into the open net by the visitors’ most inform attacker. It would be the game’s final noteworthy action, as the NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to get back on track when they return to Benedictine University in Lisle for a June 20 blockbuster meeting with second-place Washington Spirit. Rochester, N.Y. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars capped off their four-game road swing with a 3-1 defeat to Western New York Flash on Saturday night. The result, which came courtesy of second-half tallies by the home side’s Sam Mewis, Elizabeth Eddy and Jamia Fields, snapped a seven-game unbeaten run for the visitors to open the season and a ten-game unbeaten run dating back to 2014. Red-hot Chicago striker Sofia Huerta bagged the late consolation goal, moments after having a penalty kick attempt saved. The game’s first promising look went to hosts Western New York in the second minute, as a corner kick from the left saw Red Stars goalkeeper Michele Dalton struggle to control the ball in traffic but then recover well to deny Mewis at the far post. The next quality chance was created by Chicago, as Vanessa DiBernardo released Huerta down the left and the striker cut to her right before releasing a powerful drive that was deflected by a defender and whistled wide of the frame. After potential goal-saving tackles by Red Stars center backs Samantha Johnson in the 22nd minute and Michelle Lomnicki in the 25th minute, teammate Alyssa Mautz nearly opened the scoring at the other end around the half-hour mark. DiBernardo picked out Arin Gilliland on the left and the rookie engaged her marker with some nice footwork, followed by a right-footed cross that found an open Mautz at the far post. The attacker was unlucky to arrive slightly late, her volleyed attempt missing just wide. The visitors had another dangerous opportunity in first-half stoppage time, as some nice interplay between Mautz and Taryn Hemmings sent the 25-year-old Mautz into the box on the right, DiBernardo nearly capitalizing on the layoff by releasing a low first-time effort that was saved by a diving Chantel Jones. While the Red Stars defense had looked solid throughout the opening period, the Flash took control after the break and put on an impressive attacking display. The first tally came courtesy of strong buildup play and a great individual effort by Mewis, rookie Fields opening up the field with an intelligent 51st-minute centering ball from the right

LT grads bringing funk to House of Blues By DAN FARNHAM

If you go

dfarnham@shawmedia.com A group of Lyons Township High School graduates are hoping to make it big with Walsher Clemons. Walsher Clemons, a funk rock band, has been playing large Chicago venues and plans to release their first album in September. Guitarists Pat Walsh and Frank Minella started the band in 2008 while both were attending LT. They later added fellow LT classmate Michael Campo to play drums and Walsh’s cousin, Riley Pettrone, as the band’s lead singer. By 2012 they had filled out the rest of the band by finding musicians on Craigslist, namely keyboardist Alif Muhammad and bassist Craig Urban. Walsh, who moved to Hinsdale after high school, said the band’s name is his namesake, but there is not a great story behind it. “Some kid started calling me that as a nickname,” he said. “We just ran with it for eight years. We considered changing it, but we couldn’t find anything as unique.” Walsh described Walsher Clemons

Local band Walsher Clemons will perform June 20 at the House of Blues. as a funk rock band with elements of dance and pop. He said the band’s influences include the Dave Matthews Band, Phish and classic rock bands. Having spent years building up their reputation, the band now plays at venues such as the House of Blues, Double Door and the Metro, as well as touring to Midwest college bars during the weekend. The band has another House of Blues show coming up June 20. Walsh said the band played before one of their largest audiences the last

time they were at the venue. “Everyone gets more excited for playing at a venue like that,” he said. The band members all have day jobs, and some are still in college. However, Walsh said they hope to become full-time performers, starting with their upcoming album. The band worked with producer Colin Peterik, the son of rock legend Jim Peterik, whose songwriting credits include “Eye of the Tiger” with the band Survivor.

Walsh said after paying to record two songs with Peterik, he agreed to produce the rest of the album for free. “Colin said, ‘I really believe in you guys,’” Walsh said. He said the band is in talks with a radio broadcasting company to release their first single in July and will start working with a public relations company to promote the album. Walsh said his dream is to be able to tour the country with the band. For now, they are playing local shows with crowd-pleasers, such as “The Funk,” while hoping to introduce themselves to a wider audience. “Our album hasn’t been released yet, so it’s hard for people to really know the spectrum of what we have unless they’ve seen our shows multiple times,” Walsh said.

Lions’ boys volleyball team falls to Red Devils in sectional final By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

RIVERSIDE – In search of its first state appearance since 2005, Lyons Township’s boys volleyball team came up just two points short. The Lions lost against Hinsdale Central 24-26, 26-17, 25-23 in a sectional final June 2 at Riverside Brookfield. “It’s the end of my high school career, but it was a good game,” LT senior middle hitter Jake Fisher said. “This is the farthest we’ve made it in a long time, so it was a great, competitive game. I played with a lot of those guys so it’s fun.” LT, which finished the season with a 22-16 record, clinched game one on a kill from freshman Sean Ryan. The Lions fought off a game point at 23-24 and turned it around with three straight points for the game one win. The Red Devils jumped ahead in game two with a 10-2 run that gave them a 19-11 lead and forced the third game. Central, which made its first state appearance ever, led 10-5 in the third game before the Lions tied it at 14-14. A back-and-forth finish came to an end when LT missed a return wide on match point. The Lions won a regional

title for the second year in a row though they hadn’t made a sectional final since 2010. Hinsdale Central is coached by Mike Konrad, who was a setter for the Lions on the 2005 team that took fourth place. Konrad played under LT coach Joann Pyritz. “As a coach I win either way because even though my team lost by a couple points, a player that I coached ended up winning and going to state,” Pyritz said. “Mike and I have maintained a close relationship in this volleyball pursuit, so I’m happy for the Hinsdale program and for Mike specifically.” Among the senior class that led the Lions to back-toback regionals was libero Jake Suva. Suva was a three-year varsity player who holds the career dig record in the program. He had 437 this season and finished with 808 career digs. In addition to Suva and Fisher, Dan Shannon, John Klafta, Alex Miller and Marshall McElvogue were also seniors on this year’s LT squad. Junior Elijah Medlock led the Lions in kills (165), aces (54) and assists (423) and was second in blocks (39) and digs (187). “We were really more even,” Pyritz said. “Everybody made a big contribution.”

Lyons Township’s Lidia Breen makes a save May 7 in a game against Hinsdale Central. A three-year varsity player, Breen developed into an elite keeper who will play collegiately at Lehigh.

Nazareth baseball heads back to state finals By PATRICK Z. MCGAVIN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth baseball’s batting order is virtually irrelevant. The Roadrunners’ stacked and versatile lineup allows little chance at a respite. “We have a great group of hitters one through nine,” Nazareth coach Lee Milano said. They backed up their coach’s words June 6. The Roadrunners’ six, seven and nine hitters combined for six hits and drove in seven runs as host Nazareth collected 13 hits and pieced together a nearly flawless game in smashing East Suburban Catholic Conference rival Benet 10-1 in a Class 3A sectional championship. It was the top of the order that did the damage in a 7-2 win against Wauconda in a supersectional game at North Central College on June 8. Leadoff hitter Ryan Kramer was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run, and No.

3 batter Carson Bartels was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Matt Flach in the No. 2 spot and cleanup hitter Brandon Bossard each had two hits and a run, and Bartels allowed just three hits on the mound as the Roadrunners booked their first state appearance since finishing third in the state in 2012. Nazareth was 2-3 in its five previous supersectional games but leveled that record as they look to claim their first state title. “We’re not done yet,” Joey Muscolino said. “We want a championship.” The impressive victory in the sectional final gave the Roadrunners (31-8) their sixth sectional title in the past seven years and helped the team achieve 30 victories in a season for the third time in the program’s history. Nazareth broke the game open by pounding out 10 hits in the middle innings and scoring eight runs combined in the third, fourth and fifth, respectively. “We knew what a big game it was and we came out and hit the ball,” said

Muscolino, who had a double as part of a two-hit, two-RBI performance. The team’s eighth batter, Muscolino drilled a looping liner with two outs in the second that scored Bossard (3 for 3, RBI) to ignite the onslaught. Richie Kiemicki, the ninth hitter, keyed the three-run fifth with a tworun, bases-loaded single. He recorded a team-best three RBI. Kramer and Bartels each drove in a run against Benet. The Roadrunners also swept the season series after beating the Redwings twice in conference play. Ace Donald Kelly, a hard-throwing southpaw, ran his record to 8-2 by yielding just two hits and striking out six in 5 1/3 innings. “I hit all of my spots,” Kelly said. His dominant performance atoned for what Kelly regarded as a disappointing turn against the Redwings in ESCC play. “Last time we played them, I was not at my best,” he said. “Today I really gave it to them.” “He threw all three pitches for strikes,” Milano said.

ROSEMONT – Nazareth softball already had made history, but missed opportunities ended the team’s chance to go to state. The Roadrunners had won the program’s first sectional title June 6 but came up short against Kaneland in the supersectional game June 8 at Chicago Bandits Stadium. The Knights won 4-0 in a game in which Nazareth had multiple chances to put runs on the board. Nazareth (23-15) stranded a runner at third base four times, including having runners on second and third with no outs in the second inning and the bases loaded with one out in the fifth. “We had every opportunity to be in this game and winning this game and we did not take advantage of those opportunities,” Naz coach Kristen Stojetz said. “You get to this point in the state tournament and you let those opportunities pass, it will cost you.” Katie Stewart doubled in the second inning after C.J. Mardirosian walked to start the frame, but pinch runner Julia Dallmann tripped after rounding third. Taylor Gipson nearly had a double, but it went foul by inches. She later struck out and Kaneland got out of the jam. It was that kind of game for the Roadrunners, who committed three errors leading to two unearned runs. Despite the loss, it was still a memorable season for Nazareth. Junior pitcher Cat Klostermann gave up just an unearned run in the 2-1 sectional final win against Evergreen Park. Nazareth graduated seven seniors last year and started just three this spring. “It was awesome getting here,” four-year varsity player Mary Grace Chizewski said. “I would have never expected this with such a young team that we would go this far. We really came together during the playoffs. “I never thought I’d have so much fun with all these young girls. Coming this far was awesome. As a senior, it was a good way to go out.”

LSL

memories often included games against rival Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils and Lions have been the two premier programs in the area and when they meet there is always a lot on the line. “Every time we play Central it’s

LA GRANGE – Goalkeepers in soccer often have a different personality that suits the position or drew them to play between the posts. In the case of Lyons Township senior Lidia Breen, the position fits. Her aggressive, fearless nature made her a standout goalkeeper in her three years on varsity. It didn’t come naturally though. Breen said she wasn’t that good when she started club soccer in eighth grade, but now she’s headed to play Division I soccer. Breen, the Suburban Life all-area MVP, worked hard on the craft of goalkeeping to improve and be the standout player she is today. “I started playing club soccer pretty late so I was put in goal in AYSO and it just kind of stuck because I was the person who wasn’t afraid to dive on the ball,” Breen said. “I started playing club soccer in eighth grade and said I was a goalie because that’s what I had been playing when I was playing AYSO soccer and it just kind of stuck. I wasn’t very good when I was in eighth grade, but I started getting some more sophisticated training and then here I am.” Breen is headed to Lehigh for her college career after a three-year varsity career at Lyons Township. In that time, the Lions won a conference title, made three sectional finals and won a sectional title. For all of her success, Breen’s favorite

one of my favorite experiences,” Breen said. “Last year we played Central at our home field and there had to be like 700 people. It was a huge game so that was one of my favorites. We ... had such a big student section from both schools that the energy was off the charts.” Breen played a big part in that success for LT during her career. She had 13 shutouts this season and allowed less than a goal per match each of the past two years while earning all-sectional honors both years. At first, the 5-foot-8 keeper might be unassuming between the posts, but her confidence, communication and work ethic led her to become a standout keeper. “She’s athletic, fearless and worked to get better,” LT coach Bill Lanspeary said. “She went to keeper camps and keeper training and all sorts of stuff all the time. When you put in that kind of time and effort, she showed what you can do, along with the athletic ability.” In her first two years on varsity the Lions had plenty of talent and experience in defense, but this spring LT trotted out four new starters. Breen had to be the vocal leader to help organize that group and the results were positive. “Normally we’re very solid in the back, we don’t normally give up opportunities so sometimes that’s tougher and she’s always been there to make the big save for us,” Lanspeary said. “This year as a senior with a whole new back line she was a leader for us back there.”
