dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – It was another night of opposing voices at the La Grange Village Board meeting as residents took sides for and against the proposed BEDS Plus Care homeless shelter location at 9601 W. Ogden Ave. On Monday, Tina Rounds, executive director of BEDS Plus, was on hand to present the proposed plans for the shelter, as well as field questions from the board. “Since BEDS began [in 1988] things have changed [for La Grange],” Rounds said. “We know that homelessness is more than someone living on the street. It’s a state of dramatic crisis without the means to make a way out.” Trustee Jeff Nowak questioned just how the BEDS program plans to operate if it is established in the proposed Ogden Avenue location. Rounds responded by saying the proposed shelter would act as the designated charity for those in imminent risk of homelessness. Rounds was not the only one on the podium. More than a dozen residents voiced their concerns and opinions on the proposed site during the public comments section of the meeting. “Homelessness happens to people

I hope you’ll consider that BEDS has La Grange in its heart.” La Grange resident Dorothy McKenna said although she understands the need to help others, she still has con-

drop Chinese language program By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – Since 2007, the Lyons Township High School Chinese language program offered a four-year course of classes to students looking to learn Mandarin Chinese. But on March 16, citing a steady decline with enrollment and the departure of their sole instructor, the LT Board of Education voted unanimously to eliminate all Chinese language courses from their school curriculum starting in the fall of 2015. According to a memo from the office of Director of Curriculum and Instruction Scott D. Eggerding, fewer students were enrolling in Chinese I between the years of 2012 and 2015, with even less students continuing with later courses. “It is clear that Chinese is not a sustainable program,” Eggerding said. “While we have achieved many of our goals with Chinese, including setting up an exchange to China this year and preparing students for a

Chinese [Advance Placement] test, we have not been able to deliver a course with enough students to have a diverse group of learners or to employ a teacher full time.” Eggerding said LTHS students will no longer be able to enroll in the Chinese I class in the coming semesters. Between 2015 and 2018, the school will phase out the later portions of the program. For students already part of Chinese II, III and IV, the school board plans to hire a part-time Chinese instructor who can assist the remaining students finishing the course. If an instructor is unavailable, LTHS would no longer offer the courses. Students still interested in taking or continuing taking Chinese would have the option to take online classes through a partnership with Michigan State University and their Confucius Institute through the Michigan Virtual School. According to Eggerding, the Chinese language phase out will not have an effect on LT’s East Asian culture club.

Fundraiser frees The LeaderShop ‘prisoner’ at Brookfield Zoo

OUR VIEW

Little did I know when I agreed to be a “prisoner” for The LeaderShop’s annual Pirate Party fundraiser at Brookfield Zoo that I would have an adventure with a lion – well, sort of. The LeaderShop empowers youth to become community-minded individuals through programs that foster confidence, knowledge and leadership. Prisoners COMMUNITY were asked to contact everyone we know to contribute to VOICE our bail so we wouldn’t have Marti to walk the plank. Tracy To my delight, donations started coming in immediately. To thank those who had made contributions and encouraged those who hadn’t yet contributed, I started writing weekly “Tales from the Brig.” My first report informed my readers I had been less than an ideal prisoner. The jail guards had no sense of humor and didn’t think the “incident” with duct tape was as amusing as I did. I also earned demerits by complaining about no chocolate on the jail menu and suggesting that my cell be painted a fashionable color. Next, I talked about painting orange flowers on my cell walls to match my jumpsuit, telling the guards that the file in the cake my granddaughter sent me was for my nails, and working in the laundry, where I squirreled away enough dryer lint to make a mannequin for my bed when I tunneled out of the zoo. Poor calculations had me coming up in a closet behind Leo the lion’s cage. Leo and I became friends, but I was still glad there were bars between us. Last was a message from Leo: “I’m Leo, you know, the lion. Marti was being held hostage in a tiny closet behind my cage. She managed to escape, and I was so lonely I went on a hunger strike so I could squeeze between the bars and go looking for her. The guards wasted no time in finding me and apprehended Marti too. Marti said she will come to visit me often if you will just help get her out of here. Come to visit me too! And if you would like to bring me a hyena burger, that would be just grrrrreat.” Our area is blessed with many fine service agencies. If you are asked to be a prisoner for The LeaderShop next year, say yes. It’s a great experience. In a gesture of generosity and support for other charities, their prisoners can select another nonprofit organization to receive 25 percent of the bailout funds. I chose Pillars for that purpose. That says a lot about the kind of thinking they instill in the youth who benefit from their programs.

If you’re one of those people who gets annoyed every election cycle at the admonishments to go out and vote because you don’t care, you’re never going to vote and you don’t see why everyone keeps harping on it, then fear not – this message is not for you. This message is for the people who vote sometimes, or the people who know they should vote but can’t seem to get around to it. This is for the people who are most likely to vote when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race at the top of the ticket. This is for the people who’d vote if it was an app on their smartphones but don’t want to go to the trouble of seeking out a polling place. If you fit into any of those categories, then you need to vote between now and April 7 because this is the election where your vote matters most. (Early voting concludes April 4, and the 7th is Election Day, so don’t try to vote on the 5th or 6th). Municipal elections combine small constituencies with extremely low turnout, meaning races for positions that control tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of tax dollars often turn on a few hundred votes … or a few dozen votes … sometimes even one vote. Sometimes, even, a coin flip. For in-

Dave Lemery, editor dlemery@shawmedia.com 630-427-6250

Your vote has never been easier or more powerful stance, in 2013, a Stickney Village Board trustee was chosen by a coin flip because the candidates tied with 573 votes apiece. In the 2012 presidential election, on the other hand, more than 129 million votes were cast. So you can see where being one vote out of 1,146 can have a much bigger impact. If you’re not happy with your local schools, or local services, or the park district, or the library in your town, check and see if there’s anyone up for election on one of those boards. For the higher profile races, we’ve got questions and responses from the candidates about their positions online at www.mysuburbanlife. com/election-central. You can find the full ballot at the County Clerk’s website. If the importance of your vote isn’t enough to convince you, consider that it’s easier than ever to vote. Sure, a smartphone app would be great (if potentially insecure), but thanks to early voting, you don’t necessarily need to stand in long lines. Pick an off-peak day and time during the early voting period and you might be able to walk in and cast your ballot without any wait at all. Then you can sit back and watch everyone else hyperventilate knowing you’ve already done your civic duty.

SOUND OFF

This government is taking away our freedom and liberty, meanwhile using race as a distraction to divide us. Order a vanilla latte at Starbucks, but hold the white guilt. Instead, take your business elsewhere and pay attention. What matters is equal justice.

Hire people who speak correctly

To all business owners: Please hire people who can speak correct English. I have to hang up on advertisers who I cannot understand. I hate having to say, “What did you say?” over and over again.

D-86 teachers deserve high pay

it has no other use for the $100,000 it wants to spend for fancy signage at its borders? As a taxpayer, I would prefer to see the money applied to the stormwater projects and thus holding down any fees and fee increases the village is planning to hit property owners with. Or how about repairing our potholes? Maybe we need more village referendums instead of fewer ones.

$20M richer in Downers Grove

According to a recent phone survey for the Skoda ticket, the average salary for a District 86 teacher is $121,000. According to the salary schedule, the top salary is $128,000. The only way the average salary for a District 86 teacher could be $121,000 is if over 75 percent of the teachers had over 15 years experience and had a master’s degree plus 60 hours. Even if that was the case, wouldn’t that be the qualities we look for in the teachers of our district? District 86 is one of the top school districts in the nation. Our students deserve the best, most experienced teachers, and those teachers deserved to be paid for that experience.

Our [Downers Grove] public buildings are newer than 95 percent of our homes. The completed relocation to the old Pollack junkyard would put fire and police vehicles out on Ogden Avenue during rush hour. Contaminant remediation deals with optimism. What if another [20 feet] of remediation is required? Instead, let’s plant trees there on an organized volunteer basis and let them remediate the place. The two buildings existing could then be internally repurposed for far less money, inconvenience and waste. And we would all be $20 million richer with cleaner air.

Pay is too high in Downers Grove

More referendums?

Does Downers Grove really have so much excess taxpayer money available

Yes, in the village of Downers Grove, I think someone should look into why so many, and I’m talking well over 80 people, are earning more then $100,000. They can’t all possibly be department heads with master’s degrees. This is clearly a whole lot more money than the general public makes and I think someone should research it, especially during these times when there’s so many budget cuts. We need some answers.

Hello, this letter is regarding the letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans. A letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans is an act of sedition unparalleled in the history of this country. It shows the extreme actions they are willing to take because of their hate for President Obama. It is shameful that this letter was written and that 47 Republicans signed it in order to undermine our president in this way. This act increases the chance of war in the Middle East, damages the diplomatic interests of our country and hurts all of us.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? By far, the most important issue facing COD is re-establishing a proper relationship between the board and the president. With Dr. Breuder’s promised retirement, we need to find a new president who will improve education at COD, collaborate with the employees and efficiently use the taxpayers’ investment in this great local resource. COD needs a leader who will only spend money on things that improve education and service to students and the transparency necessary to hold that leader accountable. Dan Bailey What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? My long association with the college began as a student starting in 1975. For 39 years, COD has been a Wheaton source for personal enrichment, learning Spanish and changing careers to become a registered nurse. My daughters also attended COD. I know very well how important this resource is for the people of our communities. It is worth fighting for. My commitment is to be a watchdog for transparency and taxpayers at every board meeting and to be a bulldog for students and their teachers. My experience in the health science area and in labor management committees will serve that commitment. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? There are major issues with internal controls and financial reporting and spending by the executive staff of the school. There is a severe lack of oversight by both the Board of Trustees and those charged with governance. There has been blatant misuse of no-bid contracts, and that needs to stop. The president has a reputation for brewing mistrust among people for his own personal gain. Because of his $762,000 contract buyout and the extraordinary wining and dining at the Waterleaf, the school now risks losing some of the state funding it receives each year. This can only hurt the Claire Ball students and community. Addison What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I work for a publicly traded company, and I must explain everything in detail and be able to justify every change made each day, review every document and check every figure for accuracy in staying compliant with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. I worked with people to prepare departmental budgets, ensuring their needs were met while staying within company thresholds, so I work very well working with people. I also worked with capital expenditure bidding approval and understand lease language. I am also known for being a person of integrity and truly working with people for the betterment of the project, group or company.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? 1. Establish a positive forum for board meetings; obvious need for change conducive to decision making based upon facts, fair presentations, discussion and listening amongst board members and provision of answers to the public. An armed police presence must end. 2. Get the forensic audit done now; overwhelming evidence by two objective public watchdog organizations clearly shows financial wrongdoing. The board’s reaction was dead wrong in first refusing to approve a forensic audit and then later both ignoring/refusing to a voluntary performance audit by Roger Kempa the Illinois Auditor General. ... 3. Provide highest priority/needs fulfillment first to in-district students; secondarily to out of district, inclusive of out-of-state and international students. Darien What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? 1. Diversity is good. I am an independent candidate for the board to represent both the COD district taxpayers and students. 2. Both career of excellence and knowledge base in community college business and administrative management from employment perspective. … 3. Not beholden to special interests, political parties; … only the public. 4. Graduate of COD. … 5. Have an actual plan (platform). 6. Believe in term limits; one-term candidate. 7. Fact-based decision-maker … and answer all questions from public, citizens and board meeting audience members. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The board has fundamentally failed to exercise real oversight over the college president, and that dereliction has had a ripple effect throughout the institution. This election is crucial to remove the current incumbents and install trustees willing to reform how COD currently does things, particularly with respect to Dr. [Robert] Breuder; to select the new college president; repair the rift with the faculty that led to the September 2014 no confidence vote; respect the faculty as professionals; solve the problems with Deanne internal controls and board policies that generated financial irregularities and an employee indicted for theft into six figures; and to restore trust with the public. Mazzochi What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? As a small-business Elmhurst owner and attorney, I have experience regarding employment issues; I have drafted, negotiated and litigated contracts and have issued FOIA requests and addressed Open Meetings Act issues – all areas where the current board has fallen short. ... In over 17 years of private practice, I have investigated many large corporate/bureaucratic organizations to figure out the facts on the ground, apply the law and engage in creative problem-solving on behalf of my clients. The public needs assurance that there is more than just one trustee looking out for us on the board; ideally they would have a majority so engaged.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The college is in real trouble. There is lack of faculty and public confidence in the president’s leadership; financial scandals including alleged fraud, highly questionable spending practices, lack of openness at board meetings; and, in general, a president who has consistently been unable to work with others. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I worked in information systems. I have a master’s degree in business from the University Charles of Illinois. While there, I passed the CPA exam. I spent my career working with companies in a wide variety of industries. My company, a leading firm in the IBM Bernstein midrange marketplace, developed software and provided consulting services to Wheaton help our customers access and analyze their computer data. We enabled them to make better management decisions. We need people on the board who understand how we can address the serious accounting and financial issues the college faces.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The College of DuPage has a Board of Trustees that is not holding the president and administration responsible. The board seems to have forgotten that the president reports to them and they report to the taxpayers. The lack of oversight and accountability has allowed insider deals, no-bid contracts, waste and fraud to take place for far too long. The mission of the college is to provide accessible, affordable and comprehensive education. We need to get back to the basics to ensure we deliver on that promise. Frank What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have served as a village trustee in Bartlett and as a school board member on U-46. I always Napolitano asked the tough questions to ensure that any money being spent was a good use Bloomingdale of the taxpayer dollars. I fought no-bid contracts, spoke out against any wasteful spending and worked to increase transparency. During my term on the Bartlett Village Board, we reduced the budget by 6.4 percent while delivering the level of service our residents expected. Bartlett received many awards and recognitions during my time on the board.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? 1. Improving accessibility of our finances ... The policy should change so that the board, public and taxpayers can access and review for themselves where the college is spending its money. 2. Finding the right leader ... It is important as a board to develop consensus on how we will select and find our new college president ... 3. Restoring credibility ... I plan to help lead the board and the college in a new direction ... 4. Fixing a dysfunctional board communication process ... We need to facilitate open and honest Matt Gambs conversation. ... 5. Career outcomes for students ... we must remain focused on the future. Naperville What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I ... serve as an executive at one of Chicago’s largest banks. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school ... I was fortunate to be able to attend college through the GI Bill, and [I] graduated from Regis University in Denver where I studied economics and political science. ... I currently serve as board chairman of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce ... I currently serve as a trustee of Regis University. ... I am past chairman of the Heritage YMCA Group ... My wife and I are founding members of the Board of Trustees at All Saints Catholic Academy in Naperville, and I currently serve as chairman.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? All stakeholders must be brought together to hire a president who demonstrates … respected academic credentials, … administrative skills, vision, honesty, integrity, respect, has a proven record of collaboration and unconditional positive regard to restore trust and rapport with the employees and community. The president must provide an intellectual atmosphere conducive to stimulation and interchange of ideas that empowers employees and promotes harmony and teamwork … must share accurate and transparent information for the benefit of the board Sandra Pihos and the community. He/she must avoid managing by crisis and disagree diplomatically. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? Involved in Glen Ellyn education for 32 years, a state representative for 12 years, … a member of the Legislative Audit Commission, reviewing the stewardship of public funds, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force on Community Colleges, passed transparency laws, served on the DuPage County Workforce Development Board and the State Workforce Investment Board, member and president of the Glenbard Township District 87 School Board, negotiating 11 contracts with the teachers, AFSCME and SEIU. These experiences allowed me to hone my leadership skills, learn about good governance, due diligence, collaboration, negotiations and networking to obtain positive results.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? Transparency, budget and expense controls. Priority will also be to hire a honorable and well-qualified president. With all things being equal, I would like to hire a female president, the first in COD’s 47 year history. I think this will be a positive change and will help COD move forward into the future. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I am an experienced board member, with almost 12 years as DuPage County Regional School trustee. I have a diverse background from public service to business ownership and experience as an accountant for several Fortune 500 companies, all which will help me to be a asset to the COD Board.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The current politicization of the college poses a serious threat to the continued progress and development of the college. It may interfere with our ability to attract the best candidates to lead the institution. COD is one of the pre-eminent community colleges in the country, and it requires a president who can nurture the dynamic educational environment and work with the community. Fiscal concerns, transparency issues and quality academic programs must always be priorities. Strategically planning for ever-changing trends in educational and workforce needs will help to maintain Kim Savage a stable, and hopefully growing, enrollment. Darien What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have a master’s degree in education, majoring in college student services administration and a minor in business. I have more than three decades of employment in higher education with experience in policy development, budget analysis, strategic planning and project planning. I have worked with commuter student issues, developing programs for engagement to help them reach their academic goals. I serve on the Illinois Student Assistance Commission where we make it possible for students to obtain financial resources to attend college. I apply the unique insight and understanding of this lifetime of learning to my work with the board.

“I hope as a humanitarian measure, the board will pass the BEDS Center,” said Susan Valentine, a lawyer from La Grange. Other residents wondered the impact the shelter would have on the La Grange’s image as a desirable community. “Homeless shelters are a temporary fix for a long-term problem,” La Grange resident April Hill said. “We are rated as one of the top-10 places to live in; will we still be?” The board will not vote on plans for shelter until their meeting April 27, and members of the board said they have their work cut out for them. “BEDS has been well respected for decades,” Nowak said. “We’ll be asking more questions tonight and in the future before we make a decision. It’s a difficult issue; these are people I sit next to in church. There are neighbors on both sides of this issue, so this is a difficult decision.” Village President Tom Livingston

La Grange Village Board trustee said the board will make their decision based on facts and has its homework to do on the issue. “We’ve got our homework between now and the 27th,” Livingston said. “I honestly don’t know how it will go... We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. Danica Patrick

To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks Hospitals are now EDWARD-ELMHURST HEALTHCARE. And we are Healthy Driven.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Zoo’s two grizzly bears, Jim and Axhi, celebrated their birthdays Saturday at the Brookfield Zoo, 8400 W. 31st St., with a nutritious birthday cake prepared by the zoo’s staff. The more than 900-pound bears were rescued in the wild on Admiralty Island

in Alaska as 6-month-old orphaned cubs and given a home at the Brookfield Zoo 20 years ago. At their birthday party, guests were invited to sign a giant birthday card, located in the Great Bear Wilderness underwater viewing area. At a special Zoo Chat, guests learned about Axhi and Jim’s journey to Brookfield Zoo.

we went with tried-and-true Italian traditions – tiramisu and cannoli. The ladyfingers in the tiramisu imparted the coffee liqueur essence without being drenched, and a chocolate drizzle added to the delicate sweet treat. The cannoli’s delectable filling was surrounded by a slightly sweet and crisp shell, while crushed pistachios and an artful flourish of chocolate syrup added to the knockout flavor. Throughout our meal, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Our plates quickly were taken away, our water glasses remained filled, and our leftovers were packaged promptly. Our server and busser always arrived at the table with a smile. La Notte Due has lunch portions of its dinner menu available five days a week, and also offers a catering menu for anyone looking to bring the delicious taste of Italy home for a family party.

DARIEN – The phrase “la notte due” roughly translates from Italian as “the second night,” but La Notte Due could easily rank a first place in the local Italian dining pantheon. My date and I arrived for an early weekend dinner recently and were promptly seated in the elegant yet comfortable dining room, where bread materialized at our table. The Darien restaurant’s modern interior is warmed by wood floors and the paintings of Italian scenery adorning the walls. White tablecloths also enhance the surroundings. The attentive service that started with our arrival continued, with our water glasses quickly filled before our server came to take our drink order. that had plenty of depth, but no stars. Expected returners Nina Scaramella, Emily Pender, Erin Corrigan and Claire Purcell will lead the Silver title defense next year. Quotable: “We don’t have any superstars on our team. We have one of those teams that any coach would love to coach,” coach Paul Krick.

The high school winter sports season is in the books and spring sports are already underway. With that in mind, it’s time for one final look back at the winter sports season. Here are the best moments and accomplishments from Lyons Township’s winter season:

4. Wrestling wins second straight regional

1. Kurfirst wins fourth event state title

For the second year in a row Lyons Township won a wrestling regional title. The Lions went to Cicero for the Morton regional and had 10 wrestlers in total advance to the Downers Grove North sectional. Zach Villarreal, Johnny Mologousis, Nick Spacek and Ezra Avery won regional titles. Sophomores Villarreal and Mologousis later advanced to the state tournament and Villarreal placed sixth at 120 pounds. Quotable: “Definitely what we expected. Coach [Griff Powell] wanted us to just go out and dominate, and that’s what we did. We’re putting up some big bonus points and winning what we have to,” senior Nick Spacek said.

LT senior gymnast Kelsy Kurfirst finished her prolific career this season and continued to pile on her already long list of awards. Kurfirst helped the Lions win conference, regional and sectional titles and return to the state meet. Once there, LT placed fifth, but Kurfirst shined once again. The Cornell recruit took home four medals, including a state title in the uneven bars, in her final state meet at Palatine High School. Kurfirst placed fourth in the all-around, tied for first on the uneven bars and was third on the vault and balance beam in her final state meet. Her memorable career concluded with two team state titles, four event state titles and 15 medals in total. Quotable: “I just wanted to end my high school career on a good note and I think I definitely did that. I’m really excited with how I did,” Kelsey Kurfirst said.

5. Boys swimming claims sectional title

2. Boys basketball wins Silver title

After winning back-to-back West Suburban Silver titles in 2010 and 2011, Lyons Township had struggled to contend with the top teams in the conference. That changed this year. With seniors Harrison Niego and Jaquan Phipps leading the way, the Lions went 10-2 in the Silver to win the conference title outright and beat Morton in the crossover title game. LT went 23-6 on the season and earned the top seed in the sectional before losing in a regional final. Quotable: “It was a great year. Unfortunately it feels like it [ended] too early, but that’s high school basketball,” coach Tom Sloan said.

and won their first eight conference games and sealed up the title during the final conference game of the season. Seniors Vicki Swift, Gaby Galassini and Hope Miller led a balanced team

After coming up short in the conference meet, Lyons Township boys swimming fired back at Hinsdale Central in the sectional meet. LT qualified 18 entries to the state meet and topped the Red Devils, which went on to win state the following week. Wes Credit placed sixth in the 100yard breaststroke and diver Seamus Scotty also took sixth. Chris Phillips, Ben Hewett and the 200-yard medley relay also medaled. The 200-yard medley relay was the only medalist team without a senior. The young Lions have a strong team in place for next year after much of the group improved greatly and gained valuable experience this season. Quotable: “I thought we would get better as the season went on, but I think they went a little bit farther than I thought,” coach Scott Walker said.

Area teams kick off soccer season Spring is upon us and girls soccer teams have already hit the field for season openers. Here’s the outlook for what to expect from the local teams this season:

“We got a great result from that game but certainly have a long way to go,” coach Bill Lanspeary said. Freshmen Catherine Johnson, Elizabeth Hall and Mary Devine are up with the varsity team.

With a strong returning core and plenty of talent, Nikchevich has maintained his high goals for the program. “Every year we talk about the same thing,” he said. “We talk about every game that we play we want to win. experienced team that won conference and sectional titles a year ago, the Lions are younger this year but still talented. Senior goalkeeper Lidia Breen is back and is one of the team’s captains. Junior Emily Johnson also is expected to get some action between the posts. “Both of them are very good keepers, and it’s a great starting point for us with so many new players on this year’s team,” coach Bill Lanspeary said. In front of them will be an entirely new back line. Junior Izy Scott started at defensive midfield last year and will move to the back. In the midfield, senior captains Liza Gabrek and Kristen Janicki provide a mix of experience and talent. They will be responsible for creating scoring chances for a team that has to replace the loss of its top three scorers from a year ago. Senior forward Margaret Lynch will move to forward after playing as a wide midfielder last year. Junior returners Grace Salvino and Bridget Kirby also will play up top. Senior Lindsay Allen and Tina Cevizovic and junior Sheila Murphy also are varsity returners. LT opened with a 0-0 draw against traditionally strong Waubonsie Valley on March 17 and beat Oswego East 3-0 two days later.

and newcomers will give the team a mix of experience. Alyssa Garcia will lead the team at sweeper, Alexis Mondragon will provide some scoring at forward and Tania Paez will be one of the team’s leaders in midfield. “Tania Paez leads by example on the field with great work rate and effort,” coach Jim Bageanis said. Sophomore midfielder/forward Janette Moreno is among a group of newcomers looking to break into the lineup. “If we can solidify the back I think we will get chances to score offensively,” Bageanis said. “We have a nice mix of veteran and younger players.”

Outlook: The Friars lost all three all-conference players from last year but return a majority of the rest of the squad and are hoping for improvement this season. Senior defender Sydney Jensen anchors the back line, and coach Robert Watson wasn’t shy about piling on the praise for Jensen, saying she has the ability to be all-state this season. Jensen is a captain along with junior midfielder Colette Jaslowski, who was Fenwick’s points leader last season. Jaslowski is receiving interest from Division-I programs. Senior goalkeeper Lexi Rodriguez provides some stability as a returner. Meanwhile, freshman Lauren Stibich is a talented player who scored two goals in the March 16 season opener against Reavis, a 6-0 win. Watson thinks his group can challenge for the East Suburban Catholic Conference title. “It’s early, but there are a lot of positives,” Watson said. “We have experience, talent and a lot of returners. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves though.”

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A slow start doomed any chance Riverside Brookfield had of winning the March 17 supersectional against Stevenson. The Patriots clinched a third straight trip to state by beating the Bulldogs 62-45 at Chicago State. Stevenson (28-3) led 20-4 after one quarter and weathered an 8-0 run by the Bulldogs (28-4) to start the second quarter to go into the break ahead 3918. RB got no closer than 16 points in the second half. “We struggled offensively, but in the second half I thought we fought hard and made a game out of it,” RB coach Tom McCloskey said. “I’m not going to dwell on tonight. It’s been a great year. It’s a great group of kids that has done things the right way and made history in a lot of ways.”

RB season at a glance n 28-4 overall record n 12-0 conference record n 14th straight conference title n First regional title since 2011 n First sectional title in program history The experience difference could have played a factor in the game. The Patriots had made it to state the past two years with star players Jalen Brunson and Connor Cashaw playing big roles on those teams. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were coming off the first sectional title in program history. Early on, RB struggled to score and the Patriots eased any upset fears with a strong start. “It seemed like they were a little tight on some of their shots and shots they normally make, but you can only

guess on that,” Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose said. Rice recruit Cashaw had a gamehigh 23 points and Villanova commit Brunson had 13 for the Patriots. Sam Johnson led the Bulldogs with 10 points. Mark Smith, Jalen Clanton and Henry Trelenberg had eight points each for RB. RB’s loss meant the end for seniors Johnson, Paul Sitkiewicz, Kevin Fitzgerald, Ryan Hanley and Jake Lucas. Johnson was the only starter of the group but also was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. Juniors Daniko Jackson and Smith and sophomores Clanton and Trelenberg will lead what still should be a strong RB team into next season. “The seniors will be missed,” McCloskey said. “They all did things the right way, they all pulled for each other and they all played for the team first.”

PEORIA – For all of the success and reputation of St. Joseph boys basketball, coach Gene Pingatore still knows how special and difficult it is to get to, and win, state. Despite 11 seasons of 20 wins or more since the Chargers’ last state title, which came in 1999, St. Joseph hadn’t been to state since that title. This year, the Chargers made the trip to Peoria count, winning the Class 3A state title. St. Joseph beat Rockford Lutheran 55-38 in the semifinal thanks in large part to a 28-point effort from Nebraska recruit Glynn Watson. In the final, the Chargers beat Althoff Catholic 67-63, holding on down the stretch after the Crusaders came back from 11 points down in the second half. “Just to get down here is special,” Pingatore said. “Then to win it again, we’re elated. That doesn’t happen often. There are a lot of people who never got down, great coaches and great programs never got down, so this is really, really special.” Watson had another big scoring game with 19 points in the final. Junior Nick Rakocevic had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Joffrey Brown added 15 points. Jordan Ash came up just short of a triple-double with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds. The Chargers led 33-22 early in the third quarter of the championship game, but the Crusaders came back to tie the game at 43-43 with less than seven minutes left in the game. St. Joseph never trailed the rest of the way and expanded the lead back to as many as eight points. “When we beat them in February it was a 97-95 game,” Pingatore said. “When they started making a run at us I said, ‘Oh no, it’s going to be one of those games again.’” Along with the senior leadership and experience of starting guards Ash, Watson and Brown, Rakocevic, a junior, was a starter last year as well. Experience and talent wasn’t the only factor Pingatore mentioned as leading to St. Joseph’s second state title. “I think besides having three or four seniors start, which is always a factor, toughness of schedule [was a factor],” Pingatore said. “This may have been the toughest schedule we may have played ever. At some point, whether we lost or not, we were playing the top 25.”

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING VILLAGE OF BERKELEY, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, PROPOSED APPROVAL OF THE MCDERMOTT/ST. CHARLES TIF 2 REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT AREA Notice is hereby given that on the 21st day of April, 2015, at 6:30 p.m., at the Village of Berkeley, Village Hall, 5819 Electric Avenue, Berkeley, Illinois, a public hearing (the “Hearing”) will be held to consider the approval of the proposed McDermott/St. Charles TIF 2 Redevelopment Plan and Project (the “Redevelopment Plan and Project”), the designation of the McDermott/St. Charles TIF 2 Redevelopment Project Area (the “Project Area”) and the adoption of tax increment financing therefore. The Project Area consists of the territory legally described on Exhibit A attached hereto. The approximate boundaries of the Project Area by street location are as follows: An area generally located north of McDermott Drive from North Taft Avenue to the railroad right-of-way, on both sides of Wolf Road and Morris Avenue from McDermott Drive to St. Charles Road and on either side of St. Charles Road from Taft Avenue easterly to North Rohde Avenue. The total area including right-of-way is 111 acres more or less. The Redevelopment Plan and Project objectives are to reduce or eliminate blighting conditions, to enhance the real estate and sales tax base of the Village and other affected taxing districts by encouraging private investment in commercial, industrial, and recreational development within the Project Area, improve existing public utilities within the Project Area and to preserve and enhance the value of properties and business environment therein, all in accordance with the provisions of the “Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act,” effective January 10, 1977, as amended (the “Act”). The Village may issue obligations to finance project costs in accordance with the Redevelopment Plan and Project, which obligations may also be secured by the special tax allocation fund and other available funds, if any, as now or hereafter permitted by law, and which also may be secured by the full faith and credit of the municipality. At the Hearing, there will be a discussion of the Redevelopment Plan and Project, designation of the Project Area, and the adoption of tax increment allocation financing for the Project Area. The Redevelopment Plan and Project is on file and available for public inspection at the office of the Village Clerk at Village Hall, 5819 Electric Avenue, Berkeley, Illinois. Pursuant to the proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project, the Village proposes to facilitate redevelopment of the Project Area by incurring or reimbursing eligible redevelopment project costs, which may include, but shall not be limited to, studies, surveys, professional fees, property assembly costs, construction of public improvements and facilities, building and fixture rehabilitation, reconstruction, renovation and repair, financing costs, and interest costs, all as authorized under the Act. The Redevelopment Plan and Project proposes to provide assistance by paying or reimbursing costs related to site assembly, analysis, professional services and administrative activities, public improvements and facilities, including new streets, water, sewer, street lighting, and landscaping improvements, capital costs incurred by a taxing district as a direct result of a redevelopment project and the payment of financing and interest costs, pursuant to one or more redevelopment agreements. Tax increment financing is a public financing tool that does not raise property taxes but is used to assist economic development projects by capturing the projected increase in the property tax revenue stream to be created by the increase of the assessed value of the development or development area and investing those funds in improvements associated with the project. At the Hearing, all interested persons or affected taxing districts may file written objections with the Village Clerk and may be heard orally with respect to any issues regarding the proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project, designation of the Project Area, and adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefore. The Hearing may be adjourned by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village without further notice other than a motion to be entered upon the minutes of the Hearing fixing the time and place of the subsequent hearing. For additional information about the proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project and to file comments or suggestions prior to the hearing contact Marian Gibson, the Village Administrator of the Village of Berkeley, at Village Hall, 5819 Electric Avenue, Berkeley, Illinois 60163, or by phone at (708) 234-2619.
