New 5th Ward arderman sworn in

DeKALB – Andre Powell, a former DeKalb School District 428 board member who served on multiple city commissions, was sworn in as the city’s new 5th Ward alderman.

Recording Secretary Ruth Scott administered the oath of office for Powell on May 28 during the DeKalb City Council meeting. He then took his seat in place of former 5th Ward Alderman Scott McAdams, who resigned in March, citing “reasons of health.”

Powell said he is excited to serve the people of his ward.

“I look forward to being here, and I thank you all,” Powell said. “I can’t wait to get to work.”

Powell comes to the City Council having previous experience as a member of the DeKalb School District 428 board, chairman of the DeKalb Human Relations Commission and member of the DeKalb Citizen Police Review Board.

His school board colleagues offered words of support after he resigned his school board seat to serve on the City Council. In a news release, Powell said he was “deeply appreciative of the opportunities for growth and experiences I have gained,” on the school board.

District 428 board Vice President Christopher Boyes commended Powell on his service to DeKalb schools.

“I had the distinct honor of serving with him this last school year on the school board,” Boyes said. “If there’s one thing that I can say about this City Council, I know that you guys are determined for collaboration and continued economic growth and development for our community. There is one person I can tell you will continue to add onto that momentum that we’ve built here and that

is going to be Andre Powell.”

Powell was appointed by the mayor out of a pool of eight potential candidates to fill the vacancy, city documents show.

The City Council supported the mayor’s selection in a unanimous vote earlier in May.

Mayor Cohen Barnes heaped praise on Powell’s qualifications for the position.

“When I was reviewing all the applications that came through for this position, it was obvious Andre Powell’s resume just stood mounds above the rest,” Barnes said. “I know Andre is going to make an incredible addition to this council, and I’m really looking forward to serving with you.”

Powell’s appointment to fill the city’s

5th Ward vacancy hinged on his resignation from the DeKalb Human Relations Commission, DeKalb Citizen Police Review Board and the District 428 board.

It wasn’t until May 28 that Powell decided to resign from the school board. But he said he had already resigned from both city commissions around the time of the City Council’s vote to confirm the mayor’s appointment.

With Powell no longer on the school board, the district is in need of a new member to step in as a replacement.

District 428 has opened school board applications as it seeks to fill the vacancy. For information on the vacancy or application submittals, visit the district’s website at www.board.d428.org/home.

2nd recreational marijuana dispensary opens in DeKalb

DeKALB – Last month marked the start of a new era in cannabis for the city of DeKalb with the opening of its second dispensary.

The grand opening of NuEra Cannabis’ DeKalb dispensary was met with an assortment of fanfare May 23.

NuEra Cannabis district manager Ashley Camden said it means a great deal to her and her team to have their doors open at last.

“It’s very much about placing our footprint in as many areas that we can and providing the education, the customer service and being able to answer questions anyone may have about cannabis to, again, break that stigma about their particular perspective about what we are and who we are,” she said.

As part of the festivities, Chicago Bears legend Jim McMahon was on hand to sign autographs, appear at a ribbon-cutting and meet fans to help showcase his own brand of marijuana, according to a news release. McMahon played quarterback for the 1985 Super Bowl champions. He also is a brand

founder for Revenant cannabis, according to NuEra.

McMahon said he plans to have his marijuana brand in supply at NuEra Cannabis in DeKalb.

“That’s why I’m here,” he said. “We’re hoping to get our brand everywhere we can get it. We’re in seven states, I believe, right now. [We’re] working on some others. Every state is different. So you’ve got a lot of different issues at every state. What we’re trying to do is get it where everything is pretty much the same everywhere. It’s ridiculous having to deal with all these different laws and things in different states. It’s crazy.”

DeKalb resident Evan Lewis said he likes the idea of having two dispensaries in town. He said he’s glad he doesn’t have to travel out of his way to get to another dispensary.

“It makes it more accessible,” Lewis said.

Camden said it is easy to separate NuEra from the competition.

“NuEra is loud and proud,” Camden said. “We are very much colorful – our accessory assortment, our agents. We love the authenticity of our team and each of its members. We have the high level of customer service, but we love that our culture is very important to us. [It’s about] being very inclusive, very diverse, very fun. Just being unique.”

NuEra Cannabis general manager Laquetta Neal echoed that sentiment.

“It’s funky,” Neal said. “We’re really the new era.”

It’s the second of two recreational dispensaries now operating in DeKalb and DeKalb County. Excelleaf opened at 305 E. Locust St. in downtown DeKalb in November.

Camden said she looks forward to working with patrons and offering them the best deals possible.

DeKalb resident Amber Shanks was exiting the dispensary after having bought cannabis flower and prerolls. Shanks said she is glad she gave NuEra a shot.

“They seem to have a higher THC content here than the other [dispensary] over there,” Shanks said.

A crowd including DeKalb Chamber of Commerce members gathered at the dispensary to help mark its grand opening. Some came out to see McMahon.

For Bears fans, McMahon negated the idea that he’d start to question his legacy if the Bears ever found the right quarterback who could reverse the franchise’s Super Bowl fortunes and win it all again someday.

“I don’t think that Chicago or anybody else is ever going to forget our ’85 team,” McMahon said. “People still talk about it. It’s been almost 40 years. We’re hoping the Bears do something. I know the fans have been hungry for a long, long time. They deserve another winner here. So, hopefully, [rookie quarterback Caleb Williams] will do well.”

Shanks said she believes having two dispensaries in town is beneficial.

“It’s good to have competition,” she said.

NuEra was awarded a $25,000 grant from the city of DeKalb in March to help offset costs for building facade improvements.

Camden said it’s clear that people have been longing for the dispensary to open.

“People are very excited,” Camden said. “I think they’ve been very eager for us to open.”

Neal shared that sentiment.

“We had customers out here at 10 [a.m.],” Neal said.

LOOKING BACK

1924 – 100 YEARS AGO

Although it comes a little late to be of much practical value, the Chronicle cannot help but feel interested in a letter just received from Finland. It contains a nomination blank for the recent contest conducted by The Chronicle, made out in favor of M. Helminen, of Kangaraia, Kaivanto, or words to that effect. In the same envelope is a five-mark Finnish note. The incident goes to show that The Chronicle’s sphere of influence is not limited by the immediate confines of its territory.

An important change is announced this week in the personnel of the Kirkland bank, one of the liveliest and most substantial banks of the county. After a long period of faithful service, George W. Ault, well known and well thought of here, had given up his position as president and H. T. Laufer, also connected with the institution for a long time, has been elected to the place. Mr. Ault will take an earned rest.

Despite the fact that no action has been taken by Governor Small in regard to letting the contracts for the state road known as Route 23 north of Sycamore, a committee of Sycamore men, after a conference with Lieutenant Governor Sterling last evening, believe that the road may yet be started during the summer.

$75 was cleared by the Cemetery association of Cortland in the Memorial Day dinner. The women of the committee advise those having dishes left at the hall will find them at the Havens home.

John Fossello, age about 14, was picked up about two o’clock this morning by Officer Horace Young, while running away from the St. Charles school for boys. Fossello, between sobs, stated that he wanted to go to Rockford, his home, as he was homesick. Young gave the lad a meal and took him to the station, where he remained until authorities from the school arrived this morning.

Through the thoughtfulness of the driver of the Fitzgerald truck, a Wisconsin man was made to settle for damages to the new machine owned by Janes Morehead, which he crashed into just before noon today. Mr. Morehead was attempting to make a turn at Third Street on the highway when the Wisconsin driver crashed into this machine. After the crash, the Wisconsin man stepped on the gas and was not caught until he reached the Kohler Die company east of town. Mr. Morehead informed the man what repairs would cost and the fellow took off his shoe and secured the necessary money, still having a large amount safety trucked away.

The DeKalb Municipal Airport is sporting a brand-new cafeteria which will be ready for hungry customers in about another week. A door has been cut into the north wall of the flight office and a kitchen installed. A long counter runs the width of the room with red-topped stools for sitting on while munching a sandwich or sipping a soda.

The hum of a motor, a flash of silver or yellow followed by a trailing cloud of white and a swath of peas have been sprayed in Clare. The airplanes are used to spray acres of peas for the California Packing Corporation in the evening just at sundown.

Plans for this summer are being completed by the Stage Coach Players for their several productions at the Stage Coach Theater just outside of DeKalb. Seats have been set so that everyone can have a clear view of the stage, a new ticket booth and various other remodeling features have been added. The Drama Club has presented the State Coach Theatre a modern and very beautiful wine-colored curtain as its contribution to the little theater.

According to present plans, the public rest room will be ready for use the latter part of next week. The rest room will be located in the Louie Appolos building on South Second Street, directly across from the city hall. Extensive remodeling is being carried on in the building at this time and the public rest room will be housed in attractive and convenient quarters.

William Shields had the thrill of a lifetime yesterday and is not looking forward to a similar experience. Shortly after 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon Shields was driving a loaded gravel truck west on South Malta Road. As the truck was passing over the bridge, located just west of DeKalb, Shields noted the bridge shimmy a little and stepped on the accelerator as he reached the west bank looked back just as the entire structure collapsed into the Kishwaukee River.

The grass is green, the pool is cool and blue, and DeKalb parks are about ready for the start of the park district’s summer program. Park officials said they hope past problems with broken water pipes at the Hopkins Park pool will not re-occur. Construction on the proposed new pool will not begin until September. The old pool, built in 1935, will operate this summer for its 39th season.

A housing development south of Taylor Street and near Annie Glidden Road will come before the DeKalb Planning Commission as a planned unit development at a future meeting. Backers are seeking annexation of about seven acres of land with zoning for single and multiple family housing.

James Feyerherm, Thomas Monson, Raul Valdescruz, all of DeKalb, are among 105 Chicago Tribune carrier-salesmen winning Chicago Tribune/Chicago Today scholarship awards. Each of the 105 youths will share $32,700 in financial assistance to college or technical training school.

Harry Ploger Jr. and the group he chairs, the Council for Better Government of Somonauk, have an idea. Ploger, a Somonauk resident, appeared last night before the County Board’s rules committee to urge that DeKalb County prohibit heavy trucks with out-of-county destinations or origins from using county roads.

For the past eight years, the Luncheon for Hunger has benefited those in need within DeKalb County. Among the programs it has supported since its inception is Meals on Wheels. More than $10,000 of the proceeds have gone to support a variety of its services. Most recently proceeds from the event have been used to support the holiday Meals on Wheels program.

Some lots in the Heron Creek subdivision are already spoken for, even though final plans for the development do not yet have city approval. Eight lots have been reserved in the first phase of the development, which includes about 50 residential lots and commercial areas. Construction of roads will not begin for two or four weeks.

Burritos Guacamole 3, 1330 E. State St., Suite 112, opened this spring on the east end of Sycamore.

While burritos and guacamole are undoubtedly a key component of this new food establishment, Burritos Guacamole 3 seeks to provide a diverse array of authentic cuisine beyond what’s available at other DeKalb County offerings, according to its website.

The menu, written predominately in Spanish, gives patrons 17 dinner options, including quesabirria for $16.63, mojarra for $20.79, tamales for $14.55, chiles rellenos for $17.67, chilaquiles for $15.59, flautas for $15.59 and a torta dinner for $13.51.

Gorditas – a fried corncake made from masa dough and stuffed with various ingredients – are featured on the a la carte menu for $6.23. A variety of Mexican beers and cocktails, including Modelo, Tecate and a handful of margarita options, can be ordered at the new restaurant.

Orders can be placed online through Clover.com.

The restaurant is open daily from

11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the restaurant’s website, staff invite patrons to take their tastebuds on an adventure through its

authentic Mexican dishes.

“Dining at Burritos Guacamole 3 is more than eating – it’s an exploration of

new and thrilling flavors,” staff said. “We’re eagerly waiting to welcome you in Sycamore.”

Sheriff’s office warns of scam call making rounds

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam making its rounds that includes the caller allegedly impersonating a deputy to ask for money.

The sheriff’s office recently issued the warning, reminding residents that police would never call to ask for money to pay a bond on outstanding criminal charges. Cash bond also no longer exists in Illinois as of September 2023, under the Pretrial Fairness Act, sometimes called the SAFE-T Act.

“Unknown individuals are making calls claiming to be a member of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, incidentally the name being used is a retired employee,” the alert reads. “They then inform the person to call back or text 815-371-8070 and make threats to come to the person’s residence.”

scam reported that the caller said they knew where they lived, officials said. Another said the caller claimed to transfer them to another officer, but that person works for the city of DeKalb Police Department, according to the PSA.

“If you receive one of these calls, do NOT call or text the number back or engage with the caller. Simply hang up!” officials wrote.

Law enforcement agencies would never call to ask someone to pay a bond with an iTunes gift card or other types of cards, according to the sheriff’s office. Since the SAFE-T Act went into effect, cash bail is prohibited in Illinois, meaning warrants no longer have a monetary amount attached to them for release.

Residents also are reminded never to give out personal information over the phone. Those who fear they’ve been scammed are encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 815-895-2155 or report it to their local law enforcement agency. SHAW LOCAL NEWS

Cuatro Amigos Venue could open as early as July

DeKALB – The owners behind El Jimador Mexican Grill in downtown DeKalb are moving forward with plans to reimagine the space that once housed the Lincoln Inn as a new banquet establishment dubbed, Cuatro Amigos Venue, 240 E. Lincoln Highway.

DeKalb city leaders recently granted a liquor license to help make plans for the space a reality. The catering business could open as early as July.

Ryan Gifford, one of the owners of El Jimador and Cuatro Amigos Venue, acknowledged that development of the space was delayed, in part, because he and his partners considered other options.

“We had a restaurant that had shown some interest and things didn’t come together,” Gifford said.

The original plan for the building, however, was to set up a banquet venue with space for parties and other celebratory occasions.

Gifford said he and his partners don’t want the space to sit vacant any longer.

“We’re falling back to our original plan to use that space for banquets, for parties,” Gifford said. “We can do it with a cheap room fee. So we applied for our liquor license so we can have

beer on tap and everything brought in there.”

But Gifford stressed that their longterm intention is to get another restaurant to fill the space in the future.

“Ultimately, the best use for the space would be a six- or seven-day-aweek open restaurant … serving [at] a minimum lunch and dinner,” he said. “If that opportunity comes up, we would not stymie DeKalb from that for our own banquet business. But that being said, currently that opportunity, that team has not approached us.”

The owners behind El Jimador have invested between $50,000 and $75,000 into renovating the space, to date. In April 2023, the city awarded project leaders $25,000 in aid to assist with paying for lighting and exterior renovations to the building.

Gifford said he wants to make sure the public knows that they’re open to hearing about business endeavors and talking with people about what the space makes sense for.

He said he and his partners ultimately want the building to be put to the best possible use that makes sense for the city.

The venue is expected to start catering events beginning as early as July 1.

Gifford said he and his partners hope to put the space to use for the entire back half of 2024.
