t is always exciting to work on our Community Guide! The Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce is a vital part of the ongoing growth that is taking place here in the local communities. The chamber strives to promote, interact and educate business professionals, peers and prospective clients to create a strong economic community. LETTERS FROM THE VILLAGE
Greetings F
irst and foremost, thank you for expressing your interest in the Village of Algonquin. Over the years, our Village leaders have worked hard to construct a financially resilient government in a community with an outstanding quality of life.
Not only is Algonquin an excellent opportunity for commerce, but it is also a thriving community situated in the natural beauty of the Fox River Valley. Our neighborhoods offer a wide-variety of housing opportunities with easy accessibility to shopping and dining experiences throughout the community, as well as excellent schools. Residents and visitors often enjoy the numerous parks, restored natural areas, and other recreational opportunities, such as those offered by the Fox River. Tree-lined streets, vast wooded hillsides, and our beautifully restored downtown district also add to the quaint character of our community. In addition, Algonquin offers many opportunities for both new development and redevelopment throughout the area. We are actively redeveloping areas along Illinois Route 62 east of the Fox River and progressively developing our Corporate Campus located off of Randall Road, just south of our Randall Road Commercial Corridor. Both of these locations offer convenient access to major avenues of commerce, including other state routes and Interstate 90.

S

In addition, the Village offers a wide variety of parks and programs designed for families and individuals throughout the year. A number of conservation district sites, as well as the Lake in the Hills Airport, create additional recreational opportunities not found elsewhere. Lake in the Hills is a great place to do business. Whether you’re already established, starting a new business, or relocating your business, Lake in the Hills continues to be a destination for opportunity. The Village’s pro-business environment focuses on encouraging and attracting business and development that improves the quality of life for our citizens. Our city bodies are made up of residents like you: passionate about our region, driven by ideas, and hopeful about the future. We all believe in openness and cooperation, and know that the government is never separate from the people. At Algonquin and Lake in the Hills, the city governments are the people. We share more than a fire department. We share a joint vision of better lives, more fun, and greater opportunities for everyone in our villages. We’re proud to serve you this year and for all the years to come.

COMMUNITY HISTORY
Lake in the Hills was once a small residential community with farms dotting the surrounding landscape.
P
aved streets and major thoroughfares now mask the dirt roads and quieter times. However, a few original farms and fieldstone foundations still stand today as reminders of our past. The history of Lake in the Hills started in 1923, when Federal Judge Walter J. La Buy began purchasing property around what is now Woods Creek Lake, the Village's main lake. By 1926 he had acquired 472 acres as his estate. Along the south side of Woods Creek Lake, on Indian Trail, five stucco houses were built for the judge's children.
Today only one house stands in its original state, while the others have been altered and enlarged. These homes remain clearly distinguished by the gingerbread European Cottage style of architecture. Like other early houses in Lake in the Hills, the stucco homes were used as summer homes. The picturesque views from house to house were credited to Judge La Buy, as he was responsible for planting the many pine and oak trees that are now major attractions for home buyers. Through Judge La Buy's efforts, the lake was dammed and further dug out in 1923, creating Woods Creek Lake. This work was difficult, since mules were used for the excavation. Today, the lake is actually much larger than the original size, as it was enlarged over the years. When it was first completed, the lake stopped just short of where the westernmost stucco houses stand. The lot now owned by the Village, between 292 and 290 Indian Trail, was designated as the children's beach. An island was created just a few feet from the beach accessible by a footbridge. During the 1940's, Raymond Platt, who was affiliated with Dearborn Builders of Chicago,
12

AlgonquinLITH_2021.indd 12
his wife Bernice and brother-in-law J.R. Ladd purchased property from Judge La Buy. In 1947, the Platt's home became permanent and in May of that year they formed the Lake in the Hills Development Corporation. The area was now open to the general public. The Development Corporation nicknamed the area "Out of Bounds Hunting and Fishing Estate" and were credited with the property being called "an outstanding example of a well-planned community in a natural setting." Many of these summer homes soon became year round residences. In September of 1950, the Property Owners Association (P.O.A.) was formed specifically to address the problems of snow removal and maintenance of the roads. This was the beginning of the first organized Village decision making body, which was formally incorporated November 29, 1952. Lake in the Hills has continued to grow and develop since the 1950's. With its incorporation as a village in 1952, Mr. Platt donated his sales office at 55 Hilltop to serve as the first Village Hall. In 1959, a new Village Hall and Police court were relocated to 1111 Crystal Lake Road. This remained the municipal center until 1992 when the Village Hall and Police Department offices were erected at 1115 Crystal Lake Road. The Public Works Department was housed at 600 E Oak Street until 1995, when it was relocated to a state-of-the-art Public Works facility, south of Albrecht Road and west of Miller Road. In 2002, the current Village Hall was erected at 600 Harvest Gate. In recent years Lake in the Hills has seen much growth, increasing from a 1990 population of just under 6,000, to a population of 28,965 today.

COMMUNITY HISTORY
The Village of Algonquin was settled in 1834 and incorporated in 1890, and sits in both Kane and McHenry Counties.
L
ocated approximately 47 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop, the Village has seen significant growth over the last decade. Throughout development and growth of the community, the Village aims to maintain its friendly and communityoriented atmosphere. Pottowatomi Indians originally inhabited the Algonquin area. Algonquin has a rich history; in 1834, the first settler, Samuel Gillilan, arrived in this area from Virginia. Fellow settlers Dr. Cornish, Dr. Plumleigh, Eli Henderson, Alex Dawson, and William Jackson soon followed. Often referred to as the “Gem of the Fox River Valley,” Algonquin is nestled in the foothills of the Fox River Valley. In its early years, residents of the village had difficulty finding a name. Denny’s Ferry, Cornish Ferry, Cornishville, and Osceola were all considered. Finally, the town fathers met and selected the name “Algonquin” on the suggestion of Mr. Samuel Edwards from the name of a ship he once owned. The name Algonquin became official on December 23, 1847.
The town saw some new growth with the construction of the railroad in 1855, which provided another means for farmers and producers of dairy goods to transport their products to Chicago markets. On February 25, 1890, Algonquin residents voted to incorporate as a Village. Along with its commercial trade, the town also became a popular summer vacation spot for Chicago residents. A Village Hall was erected in downtown Algonquin (2 S. Main Street) in 1906, and was constructed by Blair and Summer of Janesville, WI for $6,848. The structure, which was completed on January 31, 1907,
initially housed the sprinkling wagon and fire department, the jail, council chambers, clerk’s office, and a vault for records. This building served municipal officials in various capacities (including a library, school, and municipal offices) until they moved to the current Village Hall, located at 2200 Harnish Drive, in 1996. Historic Village Hall now serves as a community facility and meeting center. A highlight in Algonquin’s diverse history is the period from 1906 to 1913, when the Algonquin Hill Climbs took place. In those days, if an automobile could successfully climb the hills of Algonquin, that machine immediately met with the stamp of public approval. The event had national participation, and the “Algonquin Cup” was a very prestigious and coveted award. The two hills used were Phillips Hill (Route 31 to the cemetery), and Perry Hill (south of town, now Lundstrom Lane). When use of Perry Hill was discontinued, the Village built a new road for the climbs in the vicinity of what is now known as Huntington Drive Hill. A new park, christened “Hill Climb Park,” located at Circle Drive and Huntington Drive, opened in 2004. This park offers recreational opportunities and includes interpretive signage and other features in recognition of Algonquin’s historic hill climbs. A portion of this history was excerpted from “History of Algonquin (1834-1994),” prepared by the Algonquin Historic Commission as an addendum to the comprehensive plan of the Village of Algonquin. For more information on Algonquin’s fascinating history, contact the Algonquin Historic Commission at historiccommission@ algonquin.org or attend one of their meetings.

Library T
he Algonquin Area Public Library District (AAPLD) reached out to its community of more than 40,000 residents in a 30-square-mile area via survey in early 2018. The community, which includes portions of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Cary, and Barrington Hills, responded in droves, and what the library discovered was something fantastic: more than 97 percent of the survey respondents felt that AAPLD is an essential part of the community because it offers equal opportunity and equal access to all resources regardless of income, gender or age.
The library continues to reflect this in its diverse wealth of resources, providing the space to be who are you and explore who can become. From DIY/craft programs for adults to technology programs for children with everything in between, AAPLD has never been this integral to a community member’s life, whether you go to the Main

Library, the Eastgate Branch, or visit us online at www.aapld.org.
The community can now use the new Makerspace, a brand new creative space in the Main Library to learn about such awesome resources as: a 3-D printer, a screen printer, a vinyl cutter, and so much more. One-on-one teaching sessions are able to be booked with a Maker Expert, ready to teach and guide. A strong partnership with the Village of Algonquin Parks & Recreation Department enables AAPLD to share resources and educate the community about library events and programs. AAPLD also serves business leaders by collaborating on programs, sharing resources and providing space for large and small meetings, as well as taking an active role in Chamber of Commerce events. You’ll also find AAPLD taking part in community parades, National Night Out parties, local events and more.

ducation is about the future. Education is about opportunity. Education is making sure we prepare our children for better lives, opportunities, and careers. Education gives them the background they need to better serve our communities.
Algonquin and Lake in the Hills are proud to be served by top award winning school districts such as Huntley Consolidated School District 158, Crystal Lake School District’s 155/47, and Community Unit School District 300 which is the 6th largest school district in Illinois. With over 32,000 students at all levels of education, we have a diverse, vibrant, and forward-facing community. Our teachers average over 10 years’ experience, bringing their knowledge, expertise, and compassion to all of our students. The mark of a quality education is how it inspires students. We’re proud to say that our schools have a higher attendance rate than the state average, and a considerably lower dropout rate than the state average, giving our students every opportunity to succeed. In addition, Algonquin and Lake in the Hills are served by two nationally recognized community colleges, Elgin Community College, and McHenry County College. We also have a number of early childhood facilities, private schools and university’s that serve our residents.
Education
Whether you’re looking at academics, groups, private clubs, athletics or anything else that makes up the educational experience, rest assured we have our eyes on the future. We know education is a springboard for opportunity.

arks and recreation are a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. The venues, programs and events managed by the Algonquin and Lake in the Hills Parks and Rec departments are where we come together as communities to learn, laugh, and to enjoy everything the area has to offer. Throughout the year, there are numerous events and festivals taking place at or near our parks. During the summer months, both villages offer storytelling, movies, and concerts in the parks. Enjoy such amenities as playground equipment, tennis courts, splash-pads, pools, and basketball courts. There is no shortage of soccer, football and baseball fields. For large or private events, both park districts offer facility rental options.
