Phillies look for Schwarber to muscle up again in 2023

For baseball fans, spring doesn’t begin until the crack of the bat can be heard in major league ballparks throughout Florida and Arizona, signifying that another season has arrived.

For the Philadelphia Phillies, the 2023 season comes with expectations. In 2022, the 87-win Phillies rode a late season surge through the playoffs to the World Series, despite finishing third in the National League East. Now all eyes are on them to see if they can pull it off again.

At the center of those expectations has to be Kyle Schwarber. The burly left fielder with the vicious lefty home run cut was a force to behold last year, his first in the City of Brotherly Love, slamming a league-leading 46 homers and driving in 94 runs largely from the leadoff spot. Of course, he batted only .218 and struck out an even 200 times but he more than made up for that with his power and his 86 walks, which upped his on-base percentage to .323 and his OPS to .827. And he even managed to steal 10 bases in 11 attempts.

In the postseason, it was more of the same: six homers and 10 RBIs in 17 games with that same .218 average and a .937 OPS. He was also three for three in steal attempts. A model of consistency if there ever was one.

If the Phils are to hope to repeat as NL champs, they’ll need similar output from Schwarber to get them past the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets in the East. He and the Phillies can be seen in action against the Boston Red Sox Thursday, March 2, in a preseason game airing from Fort Myers, Fla.

‘True Lies’ takes series form on CBS and Paramount+

Almost 30 years later, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron’s top movie hits is becoming a television series ... and that’s the truth.

The seriocomic adventure “True Lies” premieres in its weekly form Wednesday, March 1, on CBS and Paramount+, basically remaking the 1994 film as the opening episode. Steve Howey (“Shameless,” “Reba”) assumes Schwarzenegger’s role as Harry Tasker, a super-spy whose wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” inheriting Jamie Lee Curtis’ earlier part) believes he’s a mild-mannered computer salesman. Once she learns what his real job is, she’s enlisted by his intelligence agency, and they frequently travel the world on missions – while trying to prevent their children (Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye) from finding out.

“It’s the hardest job I’ve had yet,” states the good-humored Howey, who has no illusions about possibly being mistaken for Schwarzenegger as he generates his own “True Lies” under the leadership of executive prodicer Matt Nix (“Burn

Notice”). “This experience has taught me a lot about having an idea and then executing it,” Howey reflects, “because that doesn’t always pan out. Every episode of this gets better. And we get more tired.”

An alum of CBS’ “Showcase” talent search, the lively Gonzaga knows “True Lies” also is a big showcase for her. She notes she feels “guilty” that she didn’t see the movie before landing the TV job: “I didn’t want to be influenced by Jamie Lee’s iconic performance. And then, I had to buy the DVD off eBay ... and a DVD player. It was a whole ‘thing.’ ”

With Omar Miller (“CSI: Miami”), Erica Hernandez and Mike O’Gorman also featured, “True Lies” has been in development for TV since 2010, and Gonzaga reasons that it’s “good that it’s been a while.” Since Cameron also had other commitments (including the now-Oscar-nominated “Avatar: The Way of Water”), his longtime associate Rae Sanchini had more firsthand involvement in the casting; Tom Arnold, of the original movie, is a guest star on the show.

Then we did it again, and he pretended to bounce his face off a wall ... and as he ent back, my left hand went forward into his neck, and it snapped my left ring finger back to the point where my nail hit my knuckle. And I finished the stunt, and when they yelled ‘Cut!,’ I snapped it back. Then I got an X-ray and sure enough, I broke the bone. And I thought, ‘There’s a eason you have a stunt guy. Use him.’ ”

Do you enjoy appearing as yourself in a project, such as “History’s Greatest Heists With Pierce Brosnan,” rather than as James Bond or Remington Steele or another character?

That’s a very good question. It really is just you and your personality, your voice, your mannerisms. There’s no character to hide behind, but at some point, I’d pick a tone or a voice ... which was a sense memory of characters I’ve played.

You have to find your voice, and I don’t know whether I did or not. The challenge is, are you going to be engaging enough to hold the show together? I’d never done this before, but the timing felt right and the work fit the style of actor that I am and have made a career out of. You leap into it and do the work.

You’ve been an international star for more than four decades now. How do you reflect on the career you’ve had?

I had the good fortune of coming to America in 1982 and being Remington Steele, and finding my way into people’s hearts and finding work. As much as you might think of yourself as a character actor, sometimes it’s hard to just keep it simple and be yourself. I’ve seen it in other people and thought, “Wow, it’s so nice to see that sort of connection with an author through a stor y. ”

Thanks to such recent work as the movie “Black Adam,” your career still appears to be fruitful. Do you see it that way?

It seems to be. I’ve been an actor all my life, and I like to work. Sometimes you have choices and sometimes you don’t, but I’ve made choices based on good material.

Why don’t you like to travel?

Let’s start with airports. I hate the airport experience. Unfortunately with security now, I don’t love taking off the shoes. I don’t love taking off the belt. I don’t love (taking off) the watch. ... I don’t love having your stuff spread in eight bins and then disappearing from your view. And then at the end of it all, being pulled over by somebody saying they want to check your bag. ...

And then wherever we go, sightseeing is a concept that I’ve never gotten excited about. I would do it when I’m traveling but I got no real enjoyment out of it because I don’t innately have a sense of curiosity as a person ... . So those are the reasons that I’m not like the greatest traveler.

You seemed to really enjoy yourself in the premiere episode

in Finland. What were your takeaways?

Of the eight locations we went to, Finland was I think the most fun that I had. In all these locations, I’m actually getting the opportunity to do things that I would never have been able to do if I’m just traveling on my own or with family. I got to drive a dogsled at 35 miles an hour across a frozen lake in the show. That was exhilarating.

A Lasting Tribute

You’ve done plenty of work in both TV and movies. What do you like about doing a continuing character in a series such as “Alaska Daily”?

I have been fortunate to make a living as a day player/guest star for decades, and as such I am often hired on a Tuesday to shoot on a Thursday. I quickly learned that I’m expected to briskly reveal the character while plausibly and quietly moving the plot forward. And ... don’t slow things down with questions.

Being a series regular at times allows you the luxury of time –time to prepare, time to exchange ideas with the writers in advance, time to ask the writers if a slight tweak of a line is OK, time to sit with the costume designer and talk about the look and feel of the character. Also, being a series regular can sometimes embolden you to ask for one extra take if you feel you really didn’t quite get it right. It also pays more.

How are you finding it to work with Hilary Swank, who’s both a fellow star and an executive producer of “Alaska Daily”

Well, pretty much everyone has a built-in respect for her and her body of work. You don’t get two Oscars by accident. Her intelligence, honesty and courage are hypnotic, and these traits make you want to go into any situation with her. I expected to like her, but when I heard that she was driving across the country with her five rescue dogs and two birds I was downright smitten.

Aside from her artistr y, she’s clearly mastered the technical aspects of filmmaking ... camera angles, lenses, flawless continuity, and an editor’s precision of what is needed. You need not look any further to confirm her skills than the fact that she managed to hide being pregnant with twins for three months from a bunch of nosy, needy castmates.

PBS’ ‘Black Broadway’ features a who’s who of contemporary stage talent

An impressive assemblage of Black stage talent blows the roof off in a concer special coming to PBS.

In “Black Broadway: A Proud History, A Limitless Future,” premiering Tuesday, Feb. 28 (check local listings), artists including Nova Payton, Corbin Bleu, Stephanie Mills, Norm Lewis, Nikki Renee Daniels and Amber Iman take the stage at Cramton Auditorium at Howard University in Washington, D.C., to perform selections from such iconic shows as “The Wiz,” “Ain’t Misbahavin’,” “Porgy and Bess” and “The Color Purple,” accompanied by the American Pops Orchestra.

So in the two-hour special that was taped this past October, viewers will be treated to classics such as “Come Rain or Come Shine” (from “St. Louis Woman”), “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’ ” (“Porgy and Bess”), “Being Alive” (“Company”) and “I Am Telling You” (“Dreamgirls”).

For Payton, the evening was special, not only because she got to perform a showstopping rendition of “I Am Telling You,” but also it came on her home turf of Howard, where she was in her first stage production at age 3 and where she now teaches in the voice program.

she reports, and the reason why I say that is because it was just the most exhilarating feeling, like the energy in the building (was) unmatched. ... I try to explain to people that the audience are just as much a part of the show as we are, and whatever you give us, that helps us to put out more. So the audience came and gave us a show, so we were able to give them a show. So it was amazing.”

The atmosphere also extended to the wings, where the performers watched, supported and cheered one another on with every number. And Payton, who was also a producer here, got to make a few new friends, catch up with old ones and soak it all in.
