New York Liberty looking to erase memories of last year’s final

The 2024 WNBA season continues with an electrifying matchup as the talented New York Liberty visit the reinvigorated Minnesota Lynx Saturday, May 25, at Target Center in Minneapolis. Fans can catch all the action live on CBS.

After an incredible 2023 season that saw the Liberty reach the WNBA final for the fifth time in franchise history, 2023 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, alongside the Liberty, are hungry to get back to the promised land after falling 70-69 in Game 4 of last year’s WNBA final. Despite coming up short in the final, optimism remains with a new season underway.

“We know what happened last year, and the fact we didn’t achieve our goal will motivate us, but it’s not what we’re thinking about the entire season,” Stewart said, speaking with the Washington Post at this year’s training camp. “I’m really excited to get things going with a new and old group and build chemistry. Now most of us have a year under our belt, what are we going to do bigger on and off the court?” Stewart said.

While the ultimate goal of winning a championship was not achieved, the Liberty did improve their overall record, finishing the season 32-8. Stewart averaged 23 points per game, along with 9.3 rebounds, and set the WNBA record for most 40-point games in a single season (four).

For the Lynx, the 2023 season was full of positives for a team that outperformed expectations in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. The team went 19-21 during the regular season, earning the sixth seed in the WNBA playoffs.

The finale countdown: Major networks bid farewell to stars and series

April showers bring May flowers, but the best gift for TV lovers this May is finale season. As is tradition, networks all across North America prepare to wrap up many of their shows until the fall, among them procedural dramas, competition series, animated shows, family sitcoms and beloved news series.

Of all the spring finale weeks, May 1925 is the most action-packed, with Sunday night, May 19, saying goodbye to seven TV shows and one longtime judge on ABC’s “American Idol.”

“American Idol” judge and “Roar” singer Katy Perry announced her departure from the long-running singing competition during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” back in February, and now the time has come to bid farewell to the pop diva.

“I love the show so much,” Perry told Jimmy Kimmel, “but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

As for who comes out on top at the end of “American Idol’s” three-hour Season 22 finale, no one knows. But there will be one big winner and one fewer judge by the time the credits roll on May 19.

Another long-running series, “60 Minutes,” airs its 56th season finale May 19, on CBS.

Created by Don Hewitt with Bill Leonard (both of “CBS Reports”) in 1968, the

news series has become a Sunday night staple for families across the continent. And although it seems likely that the show will return for another season of high-quality interviews and investigative reporting, no official renewal has been issued as of writing.

Also airing their final offerings for the season on Sunday are CBS’s “The Equalizer,” “CSI: Vegas” and “Tracker.” Rounding out the Sunday night finales are the long-reigning animated adult sitcom, “The Simpsons” and its younger counterpart, “Krapopolis,” on Fox.

But, as the work week ramps up, viewers catch a bit of a break. On Monday, May 20, just two Fox series air their final episodes of the season: the cooking show “MasterChef Junior,” showcasing the best up-and-coming young talents in the food world, and the always-astounding and creative dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Tuesday, May 21, belongs to the Feds, as CBS airs the finales to “FBI” and its two spinoffs, “FBI: International” and “FBI: Most Wanted.” At the same time, on Fox, “The Cleaning Lady” leans into the other side of crime and tidies up its third season with a two-hour finale.

Come Wednesday, May 22, school is out for “Abbott Elementary” (until Season 4), but the focus is on the “Black-ish” spinoff “Grown-ish,” which is closing the door on the Johnson family’s story of growth and newfound adulthood after six seasons on ABC-Disney’s family network, Freeform.

“We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the ‘-ish’ series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement,” said co-creator Kenya Barris (“Black-ish). “To be able to watch ... our entire ‘Grown-ish’ family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor.”

Q: Who is the actress who plays the newest member of the “FBI: International” team, and what has she done before?

A: Christina Wolfe is the performer who has portrayed FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Amanda Tate starting in the CBS drama’s third season, which concludes Tuesday, May 21 (it has been renewed for a fourth year). She was brought in to help fill the opening left by founding cast member Heida Reed, who left at the start of Season 3 when her character Jamie Kellett left the team to go back to America and continue her work with the FBI out of Washington, D.C.

Though the London, England-born Wolfe went by a different name — Christina Ulfsparre — earlier in her career, she’s also known for her series roles on E! Entertainment Television’s “The Royals” (as Kathryn Davis), The CW’s “Batwoman” (as Julia Pennyworth) and Syfy’s “The Ark” (as Cat Brandice). She also was featured in the 2022 Netflix movie “The Weekend Away,” playing a woman who disappears after getting a friend (played by Leighton Meester) to take a trip to Croatia with her. Additionally, she had a role opposite Kelen Coleman and Jacqueline Bisset in the 2019 Lifetime film “Adriana Trigiani’s Very Valentine.”

Wolfe had professional training at Drama Studio London, and she did much of her early acting overseas. That included the movies “From A to B,” “Level Up” and “Hercules Reborn,” plus such other TV work as “Doctor Mateo,” “West End Girls,” “Drowning in Sunshine” and “Holby City.”

Q: I loved Vanessa Kirby in “Hobbs & Shaw.” What has she been doing since?

A: For those who knew her as a stage actress, or even as Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of “The Crown,” Vanessa Kirby would seem like an unlikely action star. But in 2018, she appeared in “Mission: Impossible - Fallout,” and then in 2019, she held her own in some pretty over-the-top fight scenes in “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” and suddenly casting directors started seeing her in a new light. She seems to have resisted that a little. She surely could have leaned into the action side of things (those two films grossed more than $1.5 billion at the box office, so she definitely got other offers), but instead she went back to quiet dramas for a while, such as the historical “Mr. Jones” (2019) and the heartbreaking indie drama “Pieces of a Woman” (2000).

She also reminded us that there’s big money in quiet dramas, appearing as Josephine Bonaparte in the mega-budget “Napoleon” (2023).

But for “Hobbs & Shaw” fans hoping to see her punch someone (or something) again, there’s good news: she recently signed on to star as classic superhero Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, in the upcoming “The Fantastic Four” adaptation slated for release next year.

She’ll be starring opposite Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and Joseph Quinn (“Stranger Things”) in the film — Disney’s latest attempt to make cinematic

out of the legendary superhero team.

What do “Fleetwood Mac” and this series have in common? If you guessed: “They both ask you to ‘never break the chain,’” then maybe your memory could earn you some cash. Asking big questions — and promising big rewards — the supersized third season of the “Weakest Link” reboot returns with allnew episodes, beginning Monday, May 20, on NBC.

“The game begins with eight strangers who must join forces in order to win the maximum amount of cash available in each round,” NBC, the longtime network host of the series, explains.

“One at a time, each contestant must answer general knowledge questions to build chains of correct answers. The team’s prize increases as more consecutive questions are answered correctly. But an incorrect answer could end in disaster: Anyone’s wrong answer will break the chain and force all the contestants to start over from the lowest dollar amount. Contestants compete for more money after each round, but they must vote to boot the individual viewed as the ‘weakest link’ in the chain.

“On the flip side,” NBC continues, “the last person left standing is crowned the Strongest Link and gets the total cash prize won by the entire field of contestants. That can be as much as $1 million.”

Emmy winner Jane Lynch (“Glee”) is back to lead this season’s players as the series’ stalwart, acerbic host, leading her quizzical contestants with plenty of biting wit and sarcastic remarks.

“I’m very much looking forward to [more episodes] of mocking contestants and encouraging discord,” Lynch recently claimed, surely hiding more tricks —

and tricky questions — up her sleeve.

Returning to the helm of this reboot is showrunner Stuart Krasnow (“The Mediator”), who first brought the American adaptation of this (first-British) show to life back in 2001, then again in 2020, when Lynch joined the team.

Now produced by BBC Studios’ Los Angeles Productions — in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group — “Weakest Link” comes from executive producers Ryan O’Dowd (“Wrestlers”), Aaron Solomon (“BrainSurge”) and Lynch herself.
