Walmart partners with Putnam County preschool

The event featured numerous activities for the students to participate in Shaw Local News Network

On Tuesday, April 4, managers of the Peru Walmart partnered with the Putnam County Primary School’s preschool program to provide a day of spring activities for more than 80 students.

The day’s activities included an egg decorating station, a motor station with sack and egg races, a cookie decorating station and a spring glasses/headband station.

The volunteer event included help from many Walmart representatives including Cathy Kalisiak, Scott Olson, Matt Tyson, Belinda Wetzell, Andrea Love and the parent of a preschool student, Maria Krowlek.

“Walmart has provided so much for our preschooler students this year,” teacher Michelle Edens said.

“We have been able to do some amazing things with our students thanks to some generous donations from Walmart. I think this outreach event will be a day that our kiddos remember for years to come.”

Edens added that Krowlek has been instrumental in providing needed materials and supplies throughout the school year. Krowlek, along with her colleagues at Walmart came together to make the day a reality for both the morning and afternoon preschool classes.

“We want our customers and the community to know that we will be there for them outside of the building, supporting them in any way that we can,” Krowlek said. “Each year, Walmart donates $15,000 to local charities such as Cops 4 Cancer, United Way, Shop with a Cop and IVAR. Volunteering and giving back to charities, as well as local schools, is a big priority.”

Ex-teacher to join 2 incumbents on IVCC Board of Trustees

Ottawa, Streator, La Salle, Oglesby school board election numbers also shared

Two incumbents are poised to return to the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees, to be joined by a retired criminal justice instructor.

Incumbent trustees Jay McCracken and Angela Stevenson built seemingly insurmountable leads – unofficial totals of 8,585 and 7,751, respectively – within the college’s eight-county district.

Joining them will be Rebecca Donna, whose unofficial total of 6,605 gave her a lead of more than 1,000 votes or more over each of the remaining five contenders.

“Wow! We are so honored that our voters in the IVCC District turned out and supported us,” Stevenson and McCracken said in a joint statement, as they ran as a slate. “We’re thankful they took the time and did their research on the candidates running. We gave this campaign our best shot. As we’ve said before: We have no agenda other than we simply want the best for IVCC and our community.”

Each credited their supporters and fellow board member Bill Hunt, who appeared mathematically out of the running for the third and final seat, and outgoing college president Jerry Corcoran.

“We believe in Dr. Corcoran’s legacy. We believe that Dr. Tracy Morris will build on his legacy, and we are excited for what she will bring to the College.

Rounding out the field were (again, unofficially) Teresa Schmidt with 5,582 votes, Hunt with 4,852, Crystal Loughran with 4,248, Lori Ganey with 3,856 and Julie Ajster with 3,235. Final numbers will be updated when DeKalb County figures are available.

Ottawa school board races

Lori Kimes (2,591 votes), Brenden Donahue (2,191) and Mary Ganiere (2,160) lead the four-way race for three seats on the Ottawa Elementary School Board. Stephen Omolecki garnered 1,662 votes, according to unofficial results.

In the Ottawa High School Board race for three seats, Sarah Makeever-Shumway received 4,028 votes, John Levy 3,633, Shawn Collins 2,551 and Joshua Mammen 2,118 in unofficial totals.

Election Day forecasts hold despite severe weather alerts

County clerks spot on with voter turnout predictions

Mother Nature proved no match for local county clerks. Though severe weather disrupted poll activity Tuesday, the clerks’ voter turnout predictions were right on the money.

Jennifer Ebner is La Salle County clerk and Tuesday was the first election she supervised. She guessed turnout would fall between 17% and 22% and she nailed it. Not counting unreturned absentee and mail-in votes, turnout came to 21.2%.

The prize for beating pre-election estimates, however, goes to Tina Dolder, Putnam County clerk and recorder. Dolder predicted 23% turnout and guessed low, as the end-of-night figure was 24.82%.

“I was surprised,” Dolder said. “I was kind of impressed.”

Dolder said there still are some stray ballots – 133 of 244 absentee or mail-in ballots have not yet been returned – but these were scattered and will not, she

for the three-seat race for Streator Elementary School Board, while write-in candidate Kyle Tutt tallied 53 votes.

The two challengers in the six-candidate race for four seats on the Streator High School Board were the odd

projects, alter the outcome of any individual race.

That’s not the case in Bureau County, however. Clerk Matt Eggers reported an end-of-night turnout of 15.1% – in line with his estimate of 15% to 20% – but he still has 850 outstanding ballots.

Until those are accounted for, he cannot yet call the 1st Ward race for Spring Valley City Council. In the race between Charles “C.J.” VanSchaick and Ed Jauch, there is a 14-vote differential and

26 stray ballots from that ward to be counted. Jeff Chiaventone, who worked for the street and water department for 32 years, maintains a lead with 94 votes and Jennifer Diaz with 87 votes in the 2nd Ward race, according to unofficial results.

That the three clerks all guessed with such precision is remarkable considering the polling was disrupted by severe weather alerts, including one issued at midday when voters might have used

their lunch hours to cast ballots.

Nevertheless, Eggers doesn’t think turnout was dampened much by inclement weather.

“I think it would have been higher, but probably not a lot higher,” he said. “Sad to say, there wasn’t a lot on the ballot and a lot of people didn’t know the candidates.”

Princeton, Bureau County’s largest city, had uncontested races for mayor and City Council.

The clerks also predicted school races would be a draw and the numbers tend to bear that. The eight-way contest for IVCC board of trustees appears to have drawn voters in greater-than-expected numbers.

A Shaw Local News Network analysis showed solid across-the-board voter participation even when the hottest contests were removed from the equation. In La Salle County, for example, turnout was boosted by mayoral races in Oglesby (turnout: 38%) and Ottawa precincts (30%), but not by much. Turnout slid less than 3% without those contests. More tellingly, 14 of the county’s 119 precincts recorded turnout lower than 10%.

ones out in unofficial vote totals Tuesday. Board members Steve Biroschik, Earl Woeltje, Eric Hoffmeyer and Steven Hoekstra each tallied more than 1,000 votes compared with Michael Holcomb’s 941 and Riley Haynes’ 730. Jeremy Adams, Alison Wissen and Chad Gilkerson hold a lead for three seats on the Woodland School Board. Brad Boldt trails Gilkerson by 40 votes

for the final seat, according to unofficial totals.

La Salle school board race

Madonna Duncan, Mallory Ploch, Stacie Sines are in position to win the three seats on the La Salle Elementary School Board. Kristina Stachowiak-Husband trails Ploch by 227 votes for the third seat, according to unofficial totals.

Oglesby school board race

Laura Hein and Anthony “Tony” Strand both registered more than 700 votes, while only seven votes separates Amanda Harty and Jonathan “Shap” Shapiro, with Hardy holding a thin margin for the third seat on the Oglesby Elementary School Board. The vote totals are unofficial.

“The Prom” features a cast of community members, former and current professional actors, students and staff.

“We’re so thrilled to have landed this new title,” said Don Grant Zellmer, IVCC’s director and choreographer of musical theatre. “‘The Prom’ was on Broadway in 2018 and 2019, and I absolutely couldn’t have found a better cast to bring this exciting show to life.”

“The Prom” was so popular, Netflix produced a film version starring Meryl Streep in 2021 that received critical acclaim, as did the Broadway production when it was nominated for six Tony Awards and named a “New York Times Top Pick.”

The central story of “The Prom” is based on an actual event, when a high school prom in Mississippi was canceled because a senior honor student asked to bring her girlfriend to prom.

“That, however, is where the reality part ends,” Zellmer said. “The musical’s creators built on that, and created a wild story line that begins in New York when four ego-fueled and unaware Broadway actors—whose show opens and closes on the same night—decide to become ‘celebrity activists’ to repair their images. They travel to conservative, small-town Indiana (where the story was relocated) and make the situation go from bad to hilariously worse. The combination of these two worlds colliding

skewers—and has a lot of fun—with the entire spectrum from ultra-conservative to ultra-liberal, with unexpected and side-splitting results., but common ground is discovered by a love that unites them all.”

“The Prom” features Matt Valle, Tracey Childers, Natalie Verucchi and Jake Jakielski as the four Broadways stars. Valle recently returned to the area following a long career on stage both in Los Angeles and Chicago, and the others bring professional credits with them as well.

At the center of everyone’s attention are the high school seniors, Emma and Alyssa, played by IVCC students Zoe Starkey and Lexi Johnson.

“I think this may be one of the funniest and heartwarming productions we’ve produced to date,” said David Kuester, IVCC Theatre and Speech

professor who produces the show. “It’s such a unique and fresh musical. From traditional big Broadway numbers to the pop score of the actual prom, it’s truly just a joyful experience. We’re honored to be one of the first colleges to be granted the royalties.”

“The Prom” plays Thursdays, Fri-

days and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. April 13 through 23. Tickets are $22 for adults, $15 for ages high school and under.

Online reservations are available at www.ivcc.edu/theatre, or may be purchased the date of each performance at the box office beginning one hour prior to showtime.

Audiences should note “The Prom” contains infrequent coarse language and contains adult themes (rated PG).

The musical is directed, choreographed and designed by Zellmer, produced and costumed by Kuester, with technical direction by Chad Brokaw and musical direction by Alex Guerrero.

Cast members include Zoe Starkey and Courtney Atkinson, Princeton, Tracey Childers and Lexi Johnson, Ottawa, Ethan Darrow, Alassandro DeLeon, Bree Ninis, Madysen Koesler, all of Streator, Jake Jakielski, Marseilles, Matt Valle, Natalie Verucchi, Brian Towne, Alyce Scott, Don Grant Zellmer, all of LaSalle, Kelly Johnson, Seneca, David Zuniga, Oglesby, Jennifer Walk, Hennepin, Austin Hack, Wenona, Gennaro Piccolo, Spring Valley, Crystal Credi and Zoe Bush, Peru.

IVCC scholarship created in memory of Gail Grabowski

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to incoming freshmen from L-P or St. Bede

Shaw Local News Network

A scholarship honoring the memory of language arts instructor and prolific crossword puzzle constructor Gail Grabowski, of Peru, has been established at Illinois Valley Community College.

The former Gail Cimaroli, a 1968 IVCC graduate, died Dec. 24, 2020, at age 72.

Grabowski’s husband Gary, a retired business representative for Carpenters Local Union 195, donated $20,000 to endow the scholarship for students from La Salle and Bureau counties pursuing teaching careers in lan-

guage arts/English at the junior high or high school level.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to incoming freshmen from La Salle-Peru High School or St. Bede Academy.

Grabowski attended IVCC before it moved across the river to Oglesby. Following IVCC, she graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1970

with an education degree and earned a master’s in education in 1972.

She taught language arts at Lincoln Junior High in La Salle from 1970 to 1977. She taught again at Lincoln from 1986 to 1989. She also taught in IVCC’s Adult Education Center and later as a resource teacher and aide at JFK Elementary School in Spring Valley.

By the time she left the workforce in

2003, Gail had discovered a passion that would carry her the rest of her life: crossword puzzle construction.

She had more than 1,700 crosswords published in the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Newsday, New York Times, The Crossword Club, Random House Casual Crosswords and elsewhere.

A voracious reader of three to four books per week, Gail called Peru Public Library her “home away from home.” She was a library board member for 18 years and volunteered with another trustee to keep the book sale room stocked and in order.

“Gail’s life is another example of an IVCC graduate making a significant difference in their community and beyond,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

The “Gail Cimaroli Grabowski Memorial Scholarship” will be awarded for the first time this fall.

Corcoran said of his longtime friend Gary Grabowski, “By supporting students who are blessed with talents and interests similar to Gail’s, Gary has chosen a beautiful way to allow her legacy to endure.”

PREP SOFTBALL: ST. BEDE 10, PUTNAM COUNTY 0 (6 INN.)

Hermes, patient offense lead St. Bede past PC

Bruins junior has 12 strikeouts in shutout win

PERU – St. Bede used a dominating pitching performance from junior Ella Hermes and a hard-hitting attack to secure a 10-0 victory in six innings against Putnam County on Saturday.

“I had command of my screwball and curve and was able to mix in some rise balls and changeups today,” said Hermes, who struck out 12 in six innings. “It’s nice to pitch when you know your offense is so strong and that my teammates have my back defensively.”

Bruins coach Shawn Sons felt Hermes was on her game.

“Hermes pitched real well today as she has all year, and we were able to string together some hits and put some runs on the board,” Sons said. “I thought our defense played well today, and we were able to relax in the box and get some quality at-bats.

“Early in the year, everyone is anxious and widens their zones. I was happy at the discipline we showed at the plate.”

After a scoreless first inning for Putnam County, Hermes led off with a walk. One batter later, Bella Pinter earned a walk of her own. Both came across to score on RBI singles by Reagan Stoudt and Lily Bosnich to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead after one inning.

In the second, Putnam County’s Kylee More led off with a single, but Hermes whiffed three batters to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard. The Bruins added a run in the second, as Hermes singled and scored on a single by Maddie Dalton to make the it 3-0 after two.

After a scoreless top half of the third, Stoudt hammered a 3-1 pitch over the left-center fence for a solo shot and a 4-0 Bruins lead.

The Bruins would get another run on singles from Emma Slingsby and Bosnich and an RBI infield hit by Ava Balestri to build a 5-0 advantage heading into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, Hermes was perfect, striking out all three batters she faced. Hermes kept her big day going in the bottom half with a double to right-center field fence, eventually scoring on another hit by Stoudt, who was 4 for 4 in the game, for a 6-0 lead.

Slingsby reached next on a single before Bosnich blasted a pitch over the right-field wall for a three-run homer to go up 9-0.

“It is nice to have a girl like Lily that can bunt for a single in one at-bat, then hit a three-run homer in the next,” Sons said.

In the top of the sixth, the Bruins defense kept the Panthers scoreless, and the game headed to bottom half with St. Bede needing a run to end the game.

The Bruins loaded the bases with one out on singles from Pinter, Stoudt and Bosnich before Tessa Dugosh drove a single to left to plate the 10th run.

Putnam County coach Angie Heiser was pleased with the effort, if not the result.

“I thought we played well defensively, which is something we have really worked on, but we couldn’t

group together any hits and generate any offense today,” Heiser said.

“We had some good at-bats, but we need to develop some leadership and find someone to get us that spark to get things going offensively.”
