OSF HealthCare signs letter of intent to buy former Peru hospital
these communities.”
By TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com
St. Margaret’s Health has found a buyer for the former Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru and has signed a letter of intent to sell to OSF HealthCare of Peoria, according to a memo and news release.
The health care company has signed a letter of intent with OSF, which will purchase St. Margaret’s Health-Peru “and other locations across the Illinois Valley,” St. Margaret’s president and CEO Tim Muntz said in a Friday memorandum to employees.
“Our colleagues at OSF share our faith in God and respect for life,” Muntz wrote in the memorandum, which appeared on Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski’s Facebook page. “Together, we are exploring how the Illinois Valley can continue to access high quality, local health care for years to come.”
Soon after the memo circulated, St. Margaret’s and OSF issued a joint news release confirming the letter of intent.
“The Mission of OSF HealthCare to serve with the greatest care and love has always been extended to and inclusive of the Illinois Valley,” said August Querciagrossa, Chief Executive Officer Western Region, OSF HealthCare. “Our intent is to preserve and sustain access to high quality, local health care for the residents of
Muntz said the process “will take time and approval from regulatory agencies,” but he expressed hope that OSF would make it possible to reopen the emergency room.
The Spring Valley hospital is not included in the transfer, St. Margaret’s confirmed later Friday.
Kolowski called this “a great day for the region” but raised a cautionary flag.
“We have to pump the brakes a little bit,” Kolowski said. “This is a long process. This is a positive development, but there’s a long road ahead. It’s not like it’s going to open up tomorrow.”
Nevertheless, Spring Valley Mayor Melanie Malooley Thompson called Friday’s announcement “a relief.”
“The residents of Spring Valley and the surrounding communities deserve a return to the level of care that we have enjoyed in the past,” she said. “I am confident that OSF will restore the medical services we all deserve and expect.
“The City of Spring Valley will continue to support St. Margaret’s as it navigates through this difficult situation in the hope that it will continue to provide medical services to residents at its Spring Valley location.”
No timeline was given for reopening the Peru hospital. Neither healthcare network disclosed a target opening date. The administrator of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board said the regulatory process of transferring ownership typically requires 60-90 days and requires a
change of ownership application, which has not yet been filed.
“We have been in touch with OSF briefly and will continue those dialogues in the coming week and work with them in an expedited fashion,” John Kniery, agency administrator.
Area lawmakers have pledged their help.
“Though there are undoubtedly more challenges ahead, I am hopeful that today’s announcement is a positive step in ensuring that the residents of the Illinois Valley region will continue to have access to comprehensive and quality health care within their own community,” state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris said. “I know that both Representative Lance Yednock and I stand ready to assist in this transition process however we can within our legislative powers.”
Patients, employees and first-responders are waiting for additional answers. Two EMS coordinators reached Friday had heard about the proposed OSF sale but said they had not been contacted with a target reopening date or to discuss ambulance routes.
OSF also did not immediately address whether an obstetrics unit would be included in the Peru hospital after reopening.
“Right now we are in the process of assessing community needs,” OSF spokesman Paul Arco said. “Aside from emergency services in Peru, other decisions about services and sites of care across the Illinois Valley are still to be determined.”

Putnam County Library to start Young Adult Book Group
Shaw Local News Network
The Putnam County Library Granville Branch, located at 214 S. McCoy St., will be starting a Young Adult Book Group under the direction of librarian Bernie Egan and communications student Courtney Ossola.
The group plans to meet once a month, tentatively starting in early June, to discuss books. The group will be intended for younger readers around high school age and will include community-led discussions.
Members of the group will be able to participate while reading the books of their choosing while sharing and learning of other books being read within the group.
“We will also be incorporating discussions on media literacy and maybe start to work on a collaborative newsletter where we can recommend books to each other,” Ossola said. “We just want to form a nice, little community book group for young readers who want to talk about books.”
Ossola added that having a book group where they are not all reading the same book at the same pace can really be beneficial to everyone involved.
“It’s good to talk about what we are learning and what we are reflecting on,” Ossola said. “I think it’s important not only for students to read media, but engage in a way that helps them develop their thoughts
School District to host timely and meaningful consultation meeting May 22
Shaw Local News Network
Putnam County School District 535 will host an Illinois State Board of Education mandated meeting for private/ parochial school parents, private/ parochial school representatives and parents of homeschooled students with special needs.
This public meeting will include discussion regarding allocated state funding, known as non-public proportionate share for special education students attending private/parochial schools or homeschooled students.
and grow as they develop together as readers.”
Ossola said that while the group will be looking to grow together, it also can serve as a good social event geared toward young readers.
After the group gets underway, there may also be opportunities for the group to read together, but during the school year Ossola said she doesn’t want to see students forced to keep up with a book separate from their school work.
“It’ll be nice to kind of test some things out and see what they want to do when they get involved,” Ossola said. “That’ll help them direct their own interests and network together at the same time.”
The first meeting is set for 1 p.m. June 11 at 214 S. McCoy St.
The timely and meaningful consultation meeting will take place at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 22, and the timely and meaningful consultation ARP meeting will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, May 22. The meetings will take place at the Putnam County Primary School at 400 E. Silverspoone Ave. in Granville.
Administrative representatives from the district along with representatives who homeschool their children or children who attend a private/parochial school within district boundaries also will participate in this timely and meaningful consultation in compliance with ISBE regulations for the 2022-23 school year.
Questions can be sent to Megan Goetz at goetzm@pcschools535.org or by voicemail at 815-882-2800, ext. 8.

Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners’ Seeds to Harvest Program is underway
The University of Illinois Extension of Marshall-Putnam kicked off its Master Gardeners’ Seeds to Harvest program. The program teaches local students the responsibility of planting and caring for a garden under the guidance of the Master Gardeners.
This program takes place over the course of six weeks with the first week used to set up the gardens and the last used to enjoy eating from the garden they planted. Learning about organic practices, students will learn about weed control, soil, good and bad bugs, fruits and vegetables.
The Fieldcrest School District also is unique in the program because they turn their gardens into a community garden for the summer.
The Master Gardeners have been doing this project for 12 years and can now say they are doing the program in every school district in Marshall and Putnam counties.

PCHS Spanish students hear from guest speaker Maria Balestri
Balestri spoke on her life story of being a Peter Pan child
Shaw Local News Network
On April 26, the Putnam County High School Spanish IV students heard from guest speaker Maria Balestri about her life story of being a Peter Pan child.
In 1962, Balestri’s parents sent her and her sister, ages 14 and 16, to the U.S. from Cuba. At that time many Cuban parents who feared indoctrination and the Cuban government would send their children to the U.S.
From December 1960 to October 1962, more than 14,000 Cuban youth arrived in the U.S. This was the largest recorded exodus of unaccompanied minors in the Western Hemisphere, later titled Operation Peter Pan.
Balestri and her sister arrived in Florida and stayed at the Homestead Air Force Base while awaiting to be placed in foster care. With the fear of being separated from her sister, an uncle took them in that lived in Minneapolis.
A few months later, they were adopted by a foster family. Three years later, May 1965, Balestri and her sister were reunited with their parents when they came on a Humanitarian Visa to the U.S.
Balestri later enrolled at St. Benedictine College for Women and met her future husband at St. John’s University. Balestri and her husband moved to the Illinois Valley and raised their three children.
Balestri taught Spanish at La Salle-Peru Township High School for 20 years before retiring after teaching at Dimmick Community Consolidated School District for six years.

Panthers finish conference sweep of Warriors
By J.T. PEDELTY jtpedelty@shawmedia.com
GRANVILLE – It probably shouldn’t have required 100 pitches for Austin Mattingly to finish off his complete game in Putnam County’s 7-1, TriCounty Conference victory over Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell on Thursday.
It did. And he did.
Mattingly struck out 10, walked three and allowed only three hits and one unearned run to WFC (6-13, 3-9) over seven innings to outduel the Warriors’ Tucker Hill. Perhaps most impressively, the right-hander pitched around an uncharacteristic five Putnam County (15-10, 10-2) errors and stranded eight Warriors on base on his way to the complete-game victory in exactly 100 pitches.
“I’ve been in the field making errors, too,” Mattingly said, “and when I’m on the mound, I have to do my thing. Even if we have a couple guys that have a couple errors, I still have to pitch to [the batters], and I’ll trust [my fielders].
“All my pitches were working today. I haven’t thrown a knuckleball ever while I was pitching, and I threw three of them back to back to back. It was great. I was spotting things up, and my catcher [Nick Currie] did a great job calling the game.”
WFC’s lone run, scored in the third, came as a direct result of one of those Panthers errors.
After Ethan Schumm reached on PC’s second infield throwing error of the day, he moved to second on the first of two Nolan Price singles. Schumm advanced to third when Carter Ewing drew a base on balls and scored on a deep Dylan Jenkins sacrifice fly to right.
The final three Putnam County errors did no harm. The Panthers blew the game wide open with a five-run home half of the fifth that saw WFC suffer its own defensive breakdowns with two errors, a tiring Hill walking a pair and RBIs off the bats of Blake Billups, Ryan Hundley, Johnathon Stunkel and Lucas Wiesbrock.
“He does a good job of keeping you off balance and eliciting that soft contact, and they made plays behind him for the most part,” Panthers coach Chris Newsome said of Hill and of WFC.
“He did a nice job of keeping them in the game, and luckily Austin did the same for us; and in the fifth, we broke through a little bit. [Hill] got a little tired, we took the walks, we got the hits and kind of piled up on them there.
“We did what we needed to do. ... but like I told the guys, it’s nice to see [nine] hits, but it’s a little concerning to see a five-spot in the error column.”
PC’s previous two runs against Hill – whose seven runs allowed over five innings including only two earned on nine hits, three walks and a half dozen strikeouts – came on a Jackson McDonald first-inning single scoring Nick Currie and Billups’ third-inning RBI single that drove in Mattingly.
“We’ve just got to figure out a way to, when things go down, to bring ourselves back up,” WFC coach Dan Essman said.
“That’s been kind of our downfall this year, just in general, and once we do that, we can compete a little better than we’ve been doing.
“The defense did real well other than that one inning, Tucker was good, and the bats did well. We were just hitting it to them, unfortunately. That’s baseball.”
Mattingly and Josh Jessen for Putnam County and Price for WFC had the day’s only multi-hit games, with two apiece.
With the sweep of the Warriors, the
Panthers are in position to wrest the Tri-County Conference championship from Marquette. The Crusaders and Panthers will meet in a two-game series next week – Monday in Ottawa and Tuesday in Granville.
WFC closes out its Tri-County season with a series against Henry-Senachwine – at Henry on Monday and at Woodland on Tuesday.

PC’s Zellmer stays hot in win over WFC
Senior paces Panthers with 3 hits, 3 RBIs in TCC win
By BRIAN HOXSEY bhoxsey@shawmedia.com
RURAL STREATOR – Putnam County senior Reise Zellmer has been on a hot streak at the plate in the Panthers’ last handful of games.
Zellmer’s success continued in Tuesday’s Tri-County Conference game against Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell.
After popping out in her first at-bat, the Panthers’ third baseman smacked three consecutive singles, including a two-strike, two-run base hit in the third, then an RBI liner in the fifth inning that put her team ahead for good, in a 7-4 victory over the Warriors on a windy and cold afternoon south of Streator.
“I really didn’t hit the best at the beginning of the season, but I made an adjustment in my stance and approach. It’s really helped,” said Zellmer, who is hitting .692 (9 for 13) with nine RBIs in PC’s past four games. “My step forward to the pitch was too big. I was lunging, and I was out in front a lot. I’ve worked on shortening up my stride and since the switch, I feel I’ve hit the ball much better.
“With two strikes I take a little extra time and a couple of deep breaths before stepping back in the batter’s box. I want to stay as relaxed as I can and do my best to put the ball in play.”
The win improved Putnam County to 14-6 overall and 5-5 in league play, while WFC dropped to 12-9 and 5-6.
The hosts grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second as Emma Highland smacked a leadoff double to left center and scored when Kortney Harms followed with a single. Harms later scored on an error after a single by Kaiden Connor.
WFC made it 3-1 in the third when Olivia Chismarick and Ella Derossett
ball pretty well all season, and today we added to that.”
singled before Chismarick scored on a sacrifice fly by Highland.
In the fifth, Putnam County’s Maggie Richetta had an RBI groundout ahead of Zellmer’s lead-taking hit.
In the sixth, Sarah Johnson singled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Valeria Villagomez, and scored on a hit
PC ROUNDUP: PANTHERS BEAT WOODLAND, MIDLAND
BASEBALL
Putnam County 8, Woodland 0: Austin Mattingly and Josh Jessen each hit a home run to help the Panthers to a Tri-County Conference victory in Streator on Tuesday, May 2.
Mattingly finished with three RBIs and two runs.
Nicholas Currie was the winning pitcher. He gave up one hit with 12 strikeouts and two walks in six scoreless innings. Blake Billups struck out two batters in a perfect seventh. Putnam County 5, Midland 2:
Jackson McDonald went 2 for 3 and scored a run to help the Panthers to a Tri-County Conference victory in Granville on May 1.
He also earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in a complete game.
Nicholas Currie went 1 for 2 and scored twice for PC.
SOFTBALL
Putnam County 1, Woodland-Flanagan 0: Reise Zellmer doubled and
by Paxton Stunkel to make it 5-3.
The Panthers then plated two in the seventh on a two-run ground-rule double by Tori Balma.
WFC scored one in the seventh on a single by Connor followed by a RBI double by Chismarick.
“It was a tough day to play for sure with the wind and cold,” Putnam County coach Adrianna Zeman said. “But I have emphasized all season about making adjustments, and that’s not just pertaining to the batting, pitching and fielding. Sometimes the conditions on a certain day change how you do things.
“I feel we’ve hit the ball pretty well all season, and today we added to that. The girls have done an excellent job of communicating to the next hitters what
drove in the only run of the game as the Panthers earned a Tri-County Conference win in Granville on Thursday, May 4.
Maggie Richetta went 1 for 2 and scored a run for PC, while Kara Staley threw a complete game, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Putnam County 12, Princeville 9: Salina Breckenridge went 3 for 3 with a triple, a double and four runs scored as the Panthers earned a nonconference victory in Princeville on May 1.
they’ve seen in their own at-bat to hopefully help them in theirs.”
PC starter Kara Staley earned the win after allowing seven hits, two earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts. WFC’s Shae Simons suffered the loss, giving up eight hits, four earned runs, walking four and fanning 12.
“Kara likes strikeouts and considers herself as a strikeout pitcher, but we’ve talked about trusting the defense behind you,” Zeman said. “She did an excellent job, along with our defense, of shutting things down after the third inning and giving our bats a chance to get going.”
WFC will travel to Peoria Christian on Wednesday, while Putnam County is off until Thursday’s rematch with the Warriors in Granville.
Reise Zellmer was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs for PC, and Staley earned the win.
