Illinois Valley residents beat the heat

With temperatures in the mid90s, families took to the pools and

splash pads around the Illinois Valley on Thursday. Dangerous heat and humidity continued Friday, with heat indices as high as the 110s.

OSF gets approval to operate Peru hospital

Regulatory body approves change of ownership

OSF HealthCare still does not own the Peru hospital – a sale is pending –but the health care network received the OK to reopen the hospital.

Thursday, the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved a certificate of exemption application filed by OSF HealthCare for a change in ownership of St. Margaret’s Health-Peru, formerly Illinois Valley Community Hospital.

August Querciagrossa, CEO, Western Region, OSF HealthCare said there’s still more to do before the hospital can reopen but was happy with the decision made by the Illinois Health and Services Review Board.

“We’re extremely pleased with the outcome today, one step forward. We have a lot more steps to complete,” Querciagrossa said Thursday. “Receiving the Peru Hospital asset from St. Margaret’s is really the next

step. So, actively working on that and we’ll keep the community posted.”

OSF has said the Peru location is expected to open with emergency care and other inpatient services following completion of the sale of assets from St. Margaret’s Health to OSF, and

after all regulatory approvals are received and necessary on-site preparations are completed.

Mayor Ken Kolowski said he was “extremely pleased” with Thursday’s ruling.

“This is just another step in restor-

ing access to health care, not only for Peru, but for the entire Illinois Valley region,” Kolowski said. “Hopefully this ruling will speed up the process of getting healthcare up and running by late fall.”

The Peru hospital has been closed since January and the Illinois Valley as a whole has been without a nearby hospital (OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa is closest) since the Spring Valley hospital was closed in June.

State Rep. Lance Yednock, D–Ottawa, spoke before the certificate of exemption was approved, and decried the closure of two hospitals in the Illinois Valley.

“The Illinois Valley region has suffered the closure of two hospitals serving 100,000-plus residents in the span of six months,” Yednock said. “That has a left gaping hole in every aspect of healthcare for our constituents.”

Querciagrossa, ahead of Thursday’s decision, said OSF intends to reopen the facility as quickly as possible.

Visitors enjoy the sunflowers at Matthiessen State Park

The sunflowers are back at Matthiessen State Park. The field attracts many visitors and pollinators. Park staff asks visitors not to take the sunflowers nor drive into the fields, nor park in designated parking areas, including along roadways.

Not only do the sunflowers attract

visitors for family, engagement and high school photo opportunities, they also are a habitat improvement tool. Sunflowers and wheat are planted for the IDNR’s dove hunting program. Once the sunflowers are mature, they are mowed, which causes the seeds to spread over the bare ground that doves feed on. The sunflowers keep pollinators busy and provide shade for opossums and raccoons.

OSF Healthcare welcomes new providers to Medical Group Office

OSF Healthcare has added new primary psychiatric care providers in hopes to better serve the community of Princeton and the surrounding areas, the hospital chain said.

Dr. Travis Swink, D.O, Jennifer Gutshall, P.A., and Kellie Kozlowski, A.P.R.N., joined OSF on July 24 and will look to increase access for patients in need of primary care and psychiatry services at the OSF Medical Group Office, located at 530 Park Ave. E. in

Princeton.

Swink, Gutshall and Kozlowski offer a number of services including chronic disease management, preventive care and mental health care support and treatment.

New or existing patient appointments with Swink, Gutshall or Kozlowski can be made by calling 815876-3250.

The office is open five days a week. Clinic hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

E-bikes rental business opening in Utica

Starved Rock E-Bike Rentals and Sales opens this month in Utica.

The electric bikes will be available for rental at Jamie’s Outpost, 602 Clark St. Opening day is tentatively set for Saturday, July 8. A total of 15 bikes will be available for rent and rental time is for one, two, four or eight hours.

The bikes travel 10- to 20-mph and 20- to 50-mph with pedal assist and would be ideal for a ride on the I&M Canal.

“Our goal is to give people a unique opportunity to see the beauty of Utica and the rest of Starved Rock Country,” read a post of the business’ Facebook page.

The family behind Starved Rock E-Bike is Steve and Kimberly Flynn, who started The Cliffs Off Road Park in Marseilles in 2004 and sold in 2020. Their son, Corban Flynn, and daughter-in-law, Allyson, managed Zip Chicago/The Cliffs Off Road Park from 2012-2021. truck finds permanent home in La Salle

The Taylored Plate recently opened in a permanent space at 328 3rd St., La Salle, behind Nick’s on 6.

The Taylored Plate, owned by Taylor Swagert of La Salle, opened last year. She sells loaded nachos, loaded mac ‘n cheese, other items and specials.

In a Facebook post, Swagert said she plans to continue to utilize her food truck at events.

Plans are in the works for the new space, formerly Launch Kitchen, and a grand opening will be announced at a later date.

UNDERGROUND INJECTION WELL PERMIT MODIFICATION

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hereby gives notice of intent to issue an Underground Injection Control (UIC) renewal permit for the ArcelorMittal facility which is located approximately 1 mile north of Hennepin, Illinois. The facility’s mailing address is 4020 Kinross Lakes Pkwy., Richfield, Ohio 44286-9000. The UIC injection well, previously used to dispose of RCRA hazardous waste was plugged and abandoned (closed) in 2013. The closure and completion of post-closure monitoring for well was accepted by the Illinois EPA on March 11, 2015. With the closure of the injection well no operating RCRA hazardous waste management units exist at the facility. This draft renewal permit, once issued, will cover continuation of RCRA Corrective Action activities (remediation) which have yet to be completed. ArcelorMittal sold the majority of the 870acre Main Plant and now only retains a 15.91-acre parcel (Parcel Index No. 01-10-124-001) that is still subject to ongoing Corrective Action.

Written comments on the draft modification may be submitted during the 30-day comment period. A public hearing request must be made in writing, express opposition to the draft modified UIC permit and state the nature of the issue(s) to be raised at the hearing. Written hearing requests should be sent to the Illinois EPA contact listed below by the end of the comment period. Public notice will be issued 45 days before any hearing.

All comments received will become part of the Administrative Record (AR) and will be evaluated by the Illinois EPA in making the final modified UIC permit decision. Wendy Rae Welch, 52, of Putnam, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on July 5, 2023, of natural causes related to longterm medical issues.

Wendy was born on June 14, 1971, to Raymond John and Barbara Jean [Hargis] Welch in Kankakee, Illinois.

Wendy attended St. Paul’s Lutheran grade school. After graduating from high school in Kankakee, she went on to study at Illinois State University and Northern Arizona University where she earned a BS in Nursing. After graduation Wendy worked as a registered nurse in Arizona for several years, followed by a career in management. She returned to Illinois in 2009 to be closer to family. She was a member of the Daughters of the Amer-

St. Margaret’s Health had announced the closures citing financial strains common among rural hospitals, which were worsened by the pandemic and the resulting shortage of healthcare workers, as well as a computer hack that crippled billing.

The twin closures set off an array

of worries headaches for patients in the west end of La Salle County and eastern Bureau County – many patients still are waiting to learn when and where their primary care providers will reopen – and lawmakers pledged to facilitate the regulatory process to get the Peru hospital open as soon as possible.

Michael Henderson, with OSF HealthCare, said the completion of the Peru hospital sale is tentatively slated for the end of August, but factors OSF HealthCare officials can’t control could put the purchase on hold.

“We have learned since then that St. Margaret’s organization is considering options, including bankruptcy, that will impact our timeline,” Henderson said. “At that point it will be out of OSF’s control and in the hands of a bankruptcy court. We will be prepared to close the transaction and after that operationalize the hospital as soon as we are able to receive the asset from St. Margaret’s.”

Princeton’s Michael Stutzke named to SRCCF Board

Stutzke has renovated eight local buildings including the Knox Hotel and the old Centrue Bank

Princeton’s Michael Stutzke, a civic leader and restorer of historic downtown buildings, was recently named to the Starved Rock County Community Foundation Board.

Stutzke arrived in Princeton in 2016 and has since renovated eight local buildings including the Knox Hotel and the old Centrue Bank.

He has also helped lead the Princeton Rotary’s “Shrimpfest” and is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. He is also a member of the Princeton Historic Preservation Commission and the Bureau County Zoning Board of Appeals.

As a native of the Philadelphia suburb of Gladwyne, Stutzke graduated from Villanova University and served as an officer in the U.S. Marines.

Stutzke has lived much of his life

in the Vero Beach, Fla., area including 22 years at Sebastian River High School where he taught government and economics in the International Baccalaureate program and served as athletic director from the school’s founding in 1994 until his retirement in 2016.

In that time, Sebastian helped win 59 district, eight regional and four state championships; had 20 individual state champions and earned the 2012 state sportsmanship award for Class 7A schools.

Stutzke and his wife Sue now raise corn and soybeans on their Princeton family farm.

On Aug. 9, he will attend his first Starved Rock Country Community Foundation meeting as he joins its 15-member board.

“(Stutzke) is a remarkably accomplished individual we are fortunate to add to our team,” SRCCF CEO Fran Brolley said. “In Florida, he was a leader for the Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County and I expect he will contribute mightily to our scholarship program as well.”

Spring Valley Minors capture state title

Four-run first inning propels Spring Valley past Evergreen Park

La SALLE — Spring Valley pitcher Brynn Pellegrini wound up and fired a pitch past Evergreen Park’s Sophie Tracy.

When the ball popped in Vivi Verucchi’s mitt, Spring Valley fielders raced toward the pitching circle to embrace Pellegrini as the rest of the Spring Valley players and coaches descended on them.

Pellegrini’s 16th strikeout put an exclamation point on Spring Valley’s 5-1 victory in the Minor League softball state championship game at St. Mary’s Park.

“It feels really good,” Verucchi said. “It’s just a lot to take in at one time.”

Spring Valley dominated the tournament, outscoring its five opponents 31-1.

“This meant the world to us,” Spring Valley coach Josh Pellegrini said. “We

came into this with very positive thoughts. We had a great team coming in, great parents. The coaching staff was unbelievable this year. The community, that’s something that’s very important to us. It means everything to us for everybody to come out here and

watch us.”

Spring Valley gave its fans plenty to cheer about early.

After Brynn Pellegrini struck out the first three batters she faced in the top of the first inning, Spring Valley’s bats got to work in its half.

Verucchi led off by hitting a fly ball to center field that Evergreen Park couldn’t handle. She advanced to second and moved to third when Callie Fusinetti singled.

Pellegrini plated the first run with a groundout to second base.

Reese Baltikauski singled to center field to drive home Fusinetti and was thrown out trying for second.

With two outs, Stella Simpson and Addy Mavity hit back-to-back singles before Charlee Herrich hit a ball just over the second baseman to score two runs.

“I got really nervous before the game,” Simpson said. “I felt better after that. I was feeling more confident that we were going to win.”

Four runs was plenty for Brynn Pellegrini.

She pitched around two walks in the second inning with three strikeouts. Alexis Salazar led off the third with Evergreen Park’s first hit, but Pellegrini struck out the next two batters and struck out a third after a hit batter.

In the fourth, Spring Valley allowed its lone run of the tournament when Maeve Nolan walked and Meredith McKeown and Maura Maloney hit back-to-back singles. Pellegrini limited the damage with back-to-back strikeouts.

“I just pitched as hard as I could and I tried not to throw any crazy pitches to let them score,” Pellegrini said. “I was just relying on my catcher.”

Pellegrini walked the leadoff hitter in the fifth, but Verucchi threw her out trying to steal second before Pellegrini got a groundout and a strikeout.

She struck out all three batters she faced in the sixth, finishing the district and state tournaments with 131 strikeouts in 161 batters faced.

“I really just had to focus on my spots,” Pellegrini said. “When people are yelling and screaming, I just have to try to block everything out. It can be hard sometimes, but I have to rely on my teammates to back me up.”

Spring Valley added an insurance run in the fifth when Isabella Caracheo and Verucchi walked to start the inning before Fusinetti moved them over with a groundout to first base and Pellegrini drove in her second run of the game with a groundout to second base.

“It feels really good,” Brynn Pellegrini said. “We worked really hard for it. We put a lot of heart and dedication into it. It was all a team effort.”
