Top skiers compete at Norge tourney By JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com It might be called a ski jump, but those competing in the Norge International Ski Jumping Tournament this weekend will fly. The annual event in Fox River Grove will feature top skiers from around the world, including Norway, Poland, Finland and Ukraine. They’ll soar about 200 feet in the air as they compete in the third leg of the Midwestern 5 Hills Tour, a part of the U.S. Cup Series. As with most ski jump events, several thousand spectators are expected, said Charlie Sedivec, publicity chair for the Norge Ski Club in Fox Rover Grove, which hosts the event. “I think it’s one of the most spectacular, exciting sports to see, to watch a guy come down the scaffolding at 150 miles an hour and hurl himself through the air,” he said.

Two of the Finish skiers expected to compete Sunday are considered two of the best in the world, Sedivec said. But don’t count out a couple of local competitors, he said. Kevin Bickner of Wauconda and A.J. Brown of Fox River Grove will compete in tournaments Saturday and Sunday. “They could surprise everybody and beat everybody out,” Sedivec said. “They’ll be the Americans to watch.” The weekend tournament, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, includes a Junior Competition and the Junior National Championship Qualifier K70 on Saturday. On Sunday, skiers will compete in the K70 U.S. Cup Five Hills Tournament and Long-Standing Competition. All will leap toward a new Norge Hill distant record. “Sunday is the top guns of the

sport,” Sedivec said. Hosting the tournament is an honor for the Norge Ski Club, which was founded in 1905 by a small group of Norwegian immigrants and has become one of the world’s oldest continuous ski jumping facilities. In its 108-year history, the club as never canceled a ski meet, Sedivec said. The event features food, drink and music as “very much a family party-oriented event,” he said. “We’re trying this year a little more than others to expand on our Norwegian roots as a club with our selections of music,” he said. To host the event, the Norge’s 70-meter hill had to meet numerous requirements and specification, he said. “It really is a pat on the back to the entire club,” he said. “Being we’re the oldest continuous running club in North America, we figure if we don’t know how to do it, nobody can.”

escribed as a narrative, Dave Radford’s brand new album culminates a musical journey that began for the Crystal Lake native nearly seven years ago on American Idol. Then 17 and known as “David,” Radford became “the crooner” as his renditions of songs by Frank Sinatra and the like earned him a Top 24 finalist spot in the fifth season of the popular Fox television show. He went on to receive a degree in music education from the University of Illinois in Champaign, joined with Mike Potts to form the dueling piano group “Felix and Fingers” (www.felixandfingers.com), and opened a private vocal studio to teach area students. His latest musical effort, perhaps, is his most personal, a reflection of the music he’s always wanted to make. He and his wife, Licia, have formed the duo, the Gray Havens, and officially release their first EP, “Where Eyes Don’t Go,” on Jan. 25. An album release party will be from 7 to 10 p.m. at Evangelical Free Church, 575 E. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake. “Parker” plays like the bloodiest promotional video ever made for Palm Beach tourism. Stabbings, explosions and furnituresmashing brawls occur at some of the ritziest (and name-checked) locations within the sun-splashed, pastel-soaked slab of Florida opulence. Kinda gives a whole new meaning to the idea of The Breakers. The city is the setting for an elaborate, $50 million jewel heist as well as some revenge doled out with the usual machine-like efficiency by Jason Statham. As the title character, the anti-hero of many of the novels by Richard Stark (the pseudonym of the late Donald E. Westlake), MORE Statham is stepping into a ONLINE well-known persona. Parker is the kind of thief who lives by a civilized, self-imposed code – one he expects others to adhere to, as well. But this is the same

Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew’s latest heist. RATED: R for strong violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity RUNNING TIME: 1 hour, 58 minutes character Statham always plays: quietly cool, dryly British, powerfully lethal. Director Taylor Hackford’s rather perfunctory action film is actually more compelling before it even gets to Palm Beach, as Parker makes his way from Ohio to Texas to New Orleans before reaching his final destination. This is where the character’s resourcefulness comes in handy, as he goes from one stolen car and one cheap motel room to the next, navigating sundry lowlifes in between. Parker has been double-crossed by his partners (including Michael Chiklis and Wendell Pierce) on a daring robbery of the Ohio State Fair. Although these guys have serious mob connections, he seeks his revenge by tailing them to

their next job: hitting the auction of some major jewels that belonged to a late Palm Beach society maven. Jennifer Lopez co-stars as local real estate agent Leslie Rodgers, who’s been struggling financially and emotionally since her divorce. When Parker pretends to be a rich Texan looking for a vacation home (complete with a big ol’ cowboy hat and an obviously fake drawl), Leslie shows him around and hopes for a hefty commission. But once she starts snooping into her intriguing new client’s background, she learns too much and wants a piece of the action. Lopez gets a couple of amusing lines, and theoretically is here to provide some comic relief as the wide-eyed fish out of water. (An underused Patti LuPone classes things up a bit as her sassy Latina mama.) But playing weak and girlish isn’t exactly Lopez’ strong suit, and she never functions as a potential romantic interest for Parker because it’s been well-established that he’s in love with Claire (Emma Booth), the daughter of his grizzled mentor (Nick Nolte), who is well aware of the dangers of the life he’s chosen and sticks by him nonetheless. So basically, we’re just here to ogle J.Lo’s world-famous derriere as she turns around slowly in a polka-dotted bra and panty set. It is also a popular tourist destination.
