Ryan Tipton of Woodstock plays Thomason/Robert and Jessica Smith of Lake Villa plays Kate/Blake in Theater Undreground’s production of “Doubting Thomason.”

Theater Undreground to stage ‘Doubting Thomason’ By JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com The theater company dedicated to “flipping the perception of live theater” in McHenry County is at it again. On hiatus since November 2011, Theater Undreground will return this weekend with its latest show, “Doubting Thomason.” Based on “Killer Joe” by Tracy Letts, which was made into a film now available on U-Verse with Emile Hirsch and Matthew McConaughey, the play was performed by a theater company in Los Angeles. Corey Keane, a member of Theater Undreground, saw it live and suggested the Richmond-based group put it on. The writer agreed. And with Keane and Christian Baker as co-directors, the show opens Jan. 11. “It’s like a play within a play,” said Tim Mosbach, Theater Undreground cofounder. Loosely based on a true story, “Doubting Thomason” tells the story of a theater

“DOUBTING THOMASON” WHEN: 8 p.m. Jan. 11-12, 18-19, 25-26 WHERE: Memorial Hall Civic Theatre, 10308 Main St., Richmond TICKETS: $10 with $2 of every ticket sold donated to TownSquare Players. INFORMATION: 815-575-9884 or www.theaterundreground. com company, similar to Theater Undreground, that must come up with a new play five days before the show is set to go on. Unbeknownst to the company, another local competing theater company already had obtained the rights to the play and is putting it on themselves. The main character, “Thomason,” the company’s artistic director, vows to write a new play that the company can put on in five days. He sits down and begins writing on stage. He then

The cast of “Doubting Thomason” includes Lynn Homeier (from left) of McHenry as Bunny, Jessica Smith of Lake Villa as Kate/Blake, Ryan Tipton of Woodstock as Thomason/Robert, Ian Hall of Woodstock who provides original music, Jonathan Mindham of Hebron as Teddy/Lee, Tim Vance of Carpentersville as Jake/Murderin’ Ted and Katelin Stack of Woodstock as Lynette/Bonnie. leaves the stage, and his words basically are acted out before him by the members of the company, who’ve become characters in his play. Originally written with

“a lot of nudity,” Mosbach said the writer agreed to let Theater Undreground to change up the script a bit and lessen the nudity from full-on to partial. The show does

include violence, and should be viewed as rated “R,” its creators say. “It’s almost like a Quentin Tarantino type of script, but very comedic as well,” Mosbach said. “There’s high drama, gun toting, ‘I’m going to shoot you because you’re cheating with my wife.’ One scene, you might be afraid and scared. ... The next, you’re probably laughing.” As is the case with all of its shows, Theater Undreground donates a portion of ticket sales to area nonprofit groups. For this show, $2 of every $10 ticket will go to TownSquare Players, which operates out of the Woodstock Opera House as the oldest area community theater company. Also a nonprofit, Theater Undreground began in a basement based on a love of theater before expanding to the Memorial Hall Civic Theatre in Richmond. Its members encourage local actors, writers, directors, singers and musicians to take part in an effort to “make it so the community is entertained and involved.”

By CHRISTY LEMIRE The Associated Press

“Gangster Squad,” a pulpy, violent tale of cops and mobsters in 1949 Los Angeles, rides an uncomfortable line between outlandishness and outright parody, and it’s difficult to tell which is director Ruben Fleischer’s intention. Which is a problem. While the film wallows in period detail and has some sporadic moments of amusing banter, it’s mostly flashy, empty and cacophonous, and it woefully wastes a strong cast led by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in barely developed, one-note roles. At its center is a performance from Sean Penn as mob king Mickey Cohen in which he doesn’t just chew up the scenery, he rolls it around in his mouth like a handful of marbles, then spits it back out again and blows it to bits with a Tommy gun for good measure. With his mashed-up boxer’s mug, thick Brooklyn accent and volatile bursts of anger, he’s as cartoony as a Dick Tracy villain. While “Gangster Squad” certainly has its intended moments of humor, the laughs Penn’s performance prompts might not have been part of the plan. Or maybe they were – who knows? The script from former Los Angeles police homicide detective Will Beall, based on the book “Gangster Squad” by ex-Los Angeles Times writer and editor Paul Lieberman, focuses on a time of flux in the city after World War II. Gang control of crime, cops and politicians had spread to the West Coast from places

“Gangster Squad”

H 1/2 STARRING: Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone Giovanni Ribisi PLOT: A chronicle of the LAPD’s fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and ’50s. RATED: R for strong violence and language RUNNING TIME: 1 hour, 53 minutes like New York and Chicago. Cohen had everyone of importance in his pocket and was on the verge of expanding his reach even further with a power play that would give him a piece of every wire bet placed in the Western half of the United States. The gruff and grizzled police chief (a gruff and grizzled Nick Nolte) realizes the only way to conquer Cohen is to fight by his rules – that is, by no rules at all. So he asks Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin), a principled, heroic war veteran, to put together a band of outsiders to destroy his empire without serving warrants or making arrests. His sidekick is the initially reluctant Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Gosling, chain smoking and speaking in a weird, whispery voice), who prefers booze and women to trouble. Nevertheless, he makes the mistake of getting involved with Mickey’s moll, the classy, wannabe-star Grace. Stone is gorgeous with her wavy red locks, glam makeup and sexy gowns, but there’s not much to her besides looking good, which is a huge waste of Stone’s

vibrant presence (not to mention the “Crazy Stupid Love” reunion she shares with Gosling). The rest of the team consists of tried-and-true types, each of whom gets a one-liner here or there: the folksy, oldschool gunslinger (Robert Patrick), the nerdy tech guru (Giovanni Ribisi) and – most dismayingly – the token black and Hispanic members, played by Anthony Mackie and Michael Pena, respectively. Seriously, that’s all they’re given to work with, and these are charismatic actors ordinarily capable of great command. (If you want to see Pena in a far superior movie about LA police officers, check out last year’s “End of Watch.”) “Gangster Squad” was supposed to have come out last year, as well, featuring a climactic shootout in which gangsters fire automatic weapons from behind a movie screen at Hollywood’s historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. After the July shooting at a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” that left 12 people dead in Aurora. Colo., that scene clearly had to be removed, which required extensive reshoots and a releasedate change from September until now. Still, you shouldn’t expect a kinder, gentler film. “Gangster Squad” is brutal, with a barrage of gunfire that becomes deafening and, ultimately, boring. The sheer volume of these gun battles, often depicted in stylized slo-mo or with quick blasts of light, undermines the significance of who’s going down and what’s at stake. In the end, who lives and who dies doesn’t really matter. It’s all just noise disguised as entertainment.

‘Gangster Squad’ to debut after reality intervened The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – “Gangster Squad” director Ruben Fleischer was stepping out of the shower on the night of July 20 last year when he received a chilling phone call from a studio executive at Warner Bros. There had been a deadly shooting at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colo. The studio was pulling the trailer for its “Gangster Squad” movie. The problem was the preview, which had been scheduled to debut before some showings of the latest Batman film that weekend, featured a peek at a pivotal moment in the 1940s true-crime romp when Los Angeles mobsters ruthlessly shoot into a movie theater audience. Thus began an arduous odyssey to the screen of a film loosely based on violence 60 years ago affected by the reallife violence of today – from the Colorado massacre that forced the reshooting of a key scene, through the country’s mourning after the Connecticut elementary school shooting last month, to this week’s replaying of the July theater horror in a Colorado courtroom just as the film prepares

to finally open Friday. Fleischer couldn’t initially process what was happening in that moment when he was on the phone last summer but eventually, everyone involved with “Gangster Squad” agreed: The scene was just too similar and had to be cut – not just from the trailer, but also from the movie, which was set for release two months later. “It was really eerie,” star Josh Brolin said of the original scene’s parallel to the real-life shooting in Aurora. “I respected and supported the decision immediately. It’s still a violent replacement. It just happens in Chinatown. It’s just as violent. It just doesn’t remind you of this thing that happened. It’s probably going to anyway because everyone knows it’s been replaced.” Several members of the cast and crew reassembled nearly a year after filming completed on “Gangster Squad” to shoot the new sequence in LA’s Chinatown section just north of downtown. The scene, which cost several million dollars to reshoot, fits seamlessly into the film and functions narratively in the same way as the original: Brolin’s O’Mara is ambushed, only this time by an exploding laundry truck instead of guntoting gangsters.
