George Barris built the original Batmobile out of a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. Photo provided
Holy auction block
batman By JAMI KUNZER
jkunzer@shawmedia.com
Tricked-out with its 1960s fins, the original Batmobile goes up for auction this weekend with expectations to bring in at least $3 million. An identical one sits in the Volo Auto Museum. Car No. 7, to be exact, created as one of several fiberglass duplicates to serve as backup in case the original broke down on set. Not as valuable as the original, you might think. But, actually, it kind of is to the museum. “The Batmobile is by far the most famous television and movie car,” Musuem Director Brian Grams said. “There are so many Batmobiles throughout the years that it doesn’t matter how old you are ... Everybody knows it. It’s an icon.” Would he ever sell his valued possession? (As Robin might say, “Wowzers!”) “It’s our biggest attraction,” Grams said. “We’ve got no plans on

The money would be gone in a matter of time, but you can never replace the car.” Originally created in 1966 by George Barris (who visits the Volo museum regularly) out of a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, the Batmobile has evolved from its “POW,” “BANG,” years in the television series. The live-action series, “Batman,” aired in 1965 and led to a movie adaption featuring Adam West, along with Barris’ customized car. Back then, it soared out of the Batcave with a bat logo on its door and its many gadgets, such as a Bat Ray projector, Batscope, Batcomputer

and Batphone. Just the fact the car was built out of a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car is enough of a draw, Grams said. Throw in Batman’s ultimate gadgets, and, “They’re getting two for one,” he said. Today’s Batmobiles are slicker and more like the hot rods admired by younger generations. But to the Baby Boomers and others who remember the early Batman years, they’ll take the original any day, Grams said. “If you talk to a 15-year-old, he’s going to love the new Batmobile hands-down over the old ones. “But the majority of the people, the Baby Boomers and that, the people that remember that car are the ones that have the money.” His is one of only a few DC Comicsapproved Batmobiles, bearing the trademarked red-orange “bat” logo and permitted to be displayed under the title of “Batmobile.” Adding to the Volo display are the Batcycle with the go-cart attachment
used by Batman and Robin in the television series, one of the Batmobiles from the 1989 film in the franchise featuring Michael Keaton and the semi-truck Heath Ledger drove as “The Joker” in “The Dark Knight.” But the main attraction is and likely always will be the Batmobile, said Grams, who’s been contacted frequently since the sale of the original was announced. The Batmobile will be featured Jan. 19 at an ongoing Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. To preview the auction, the WGN TV morning news team borrowed Gram’s car for a December newscast as part of a spoof on the auction. And a documentary featuring the evolution of the Batmobile now plays at the Volo attraction feature Grams’ Batmobile, which continues to draw visitors to the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “People love the old one,” Grams said. “To a lot of people, it’s nostalgia.”

Gunnar and Matthew might perform one or two of their hits as they reminisce about their father’s encouragement of them to become songwriters, Matthew said. But “Ricky Nelson Remembered” is “predominantly about our dad’s music and life,” he said. Among numerous historical photos and videos, the concert features classic clips from “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.” It also will include interviews with those who knew and worked with Ricky Nelson, including Paul McCartney, Chris Isaak, John Fogerty and Kris Kristofferson. Featuring Ricky Nelson’s hits coupled with family videos, the concert tells a story. “It’s a musical and personal timeline that goes throughout our pop’s life,” Matthew Nelson said. “When we’re on stage, we’re not only there to represent our father, but our entire family,” he said. “It’s our entire legacy up there.” “Ricky Nelson Remembered” takes place at 8 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake. The Nelson family is listed in the “Guiness Book of World Records” as the only family in history to reach number one record status in three successive generations, beginning with Gunnar and Matthew’s grandparents, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. “It just basically means everyone did something valid,” Matthew Nelson said of the family’s success. “Even if it ends there, I’m pretty proud of it.” Ricky’s father, Ozzie Nelson, who created the popular television show, “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” featuring the entire Nelson family, had a No. 1 hit with “And then Some.” Ricky, who began his entertainment career in 1949 playing himself on his father’s sitcom (then a radio series), scored his first top hit with “Poor Little Fool” in 1958 and placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1957 and 1973. He died at age 45 in a plane crash in 1985. His twin sons went on to have top hits of their own as the band “Nelson,” including the No. 1 hit, “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection” from their 1990 debut

is the only artist to have a No. 1 song, No. 1 movie and No. 1 television show in the same week. “Life” magazine coined the phrase, “teen idol” after him. From 1957 to 1962, he had more Top 40 hits than any other artist expect Elvis Presley and Pat Boone. And Matthew said the reason Ricky wasn’t inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the same year as Elvis is because Elvis’ estate wouldn’t allow it. “The reality was he was such a threat to Elvis and his memory and legacy. Back then, it was Elvis and Ricky,” Matthew said. “Those were the biggies. I think that’s kind of cool. Elvis was most certainly the King. There’s no disputing the fact that Ricky was the crown prince of rock ’n’ roll.” Yet, Matthew said, he never truly realized his own fame. “He was not the kind of guy to wave his own flag,” Matthew – Matthew Nelson said. “When he got on stage, he was very fierce, but in real life, he was very humble. He didn’t really know himself, how truly loved he was. He really only got his props after he was gone.” The concert touches upon some of Ricky’s struggles to stay true to his musical interests amid all of the success, Matthew said. It is reported that Ricky wrote “Garden Party,” his last Top 40 hit, in disgust after a Madison Square Garden audience booed him for, in his mind, playing new songs instead of old hits. “It’s a blessing and a curse having a long career because people tend to want to keep you in a little box,” Matthew said. “As an artist you want to meet that ... but you also need to grow.” The Raue show will be similar to last year’s concert, but has grown, Matthew said. “The show is evolving constantly, but obviously there’s a certain amount of the usual suspects that the show brings with it,” he said. “I think that’s kind of the charm of it. It kind of lets people go back to a time and a place and something they’re familiar with. “The show’s gotten a year better.”

By JEFFREY WESTHOFF
“Broken City” is something that hasn’t been attempted in a while by a studio feature, a classical private eye story in the Raymond Chandler tradition. One character even comments on the tale’s old-fashioned origins when he says, “Private MORE eyes? Do private eyes still ONLINE Watch a video exist?” review of Although the script is “Broken City” at set in present-day New PlanitNorthYork City, director Alwest.com len Hughes and writer Brian Tucker don’t bring anything fresh or contemporary to the formula. They just take clichés and put them in modern dress. When beleaguered private investigator Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) skulks outside bedroom windows taking pictures for divorce cases, he uses a digital camera. Standard scene, new technology. Billy works out of a run-down office, and most of his clients are past due on
erine Zeta-Jones PLOT: In a city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart seeks redemption and revenge after being doublecrossed and then framed by its most powerful figure: Mayor Nicholas Hostetler. RATED: R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence RUNNING TIME: 1 hour, 49 minutes their bills. The only relief in his job is his pert and loyal girl Friday assistant, Katy (Alona Tal). Like many private eyes, he used to be a cop. “Broken City” opens by showing how Billy became an ex cop. He faces trial for murder after he is accused of gunning down a Puerto Rican kid who recently beat a rape and murder rap. When a judge throws out Billy’s case, Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) and the next police commissioner (Jeffrey Wright) privately congratulate Billy on his acquittal, then force him to resign. The mayor softens the blow by saying he has a long memory. Seven years later, Billy is called back into the mayor’s office. With election less than a week away, the mayor is locked in a tight race with a crusading city council member (Barry Pepper) who is named Jack Valliant, for crying out loud. But the mayor has another worry. He believes his wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is cheating
on him and wants Billy to discover her lover’s identity. Billy tails the wife and is stunned to see her meeting clandestinely with Valliant’s campaign manager (Kyle Chandler). Whenever Philip Marlowe and his brethren were hired by the rich and powerful, they were being set up. It doesn’t take Billy too long to realize that Mayor Hostetler has ulterior motives, and that they probably are related to a complex, $4 billion real estate deal involving a public housing development. This part of the story is reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown,” which was itself a throwback to hard-boiled detective stories, although now, nearly 40 years on, it seems like one of Raymond Chandler’s contemporaries wrote it. “Broken City” is Allen Hughes’ first solo feature without his twin brother, Albert. Together they directed “Menace II Society” and “The Book of Eli.” Alone, Allen Hughes maintains a high degree of competence. “Broken City” is a great looking film (Ben Seresin did the cinematography) with a better cast than it deserves. But the required twists and turns of the detective plot cannot avoid the many plot holes. The biggest is Billy himself. The shooting turned him into a celebrity. While perhaps the average New Yorker might have forgotten his face, a political insider like Kyle Chandler’s character would not, particularly when Billy doesn’t hide it when trailing suspects.

Continued from page 12 First-time scenarist Tucker’s writing is often clumsy. The fact that Billy is a recovering alcoholic is inserted into the screenplay late, only a few scenes before he falls off the wagon. The dialogue also can be laughably expository, as when Billy’s girlfriend (Natalie Martinez) says, “It’s not every day that your girlfriend stars in an indie film.” The girlfriend, who is also the rape victim’s sister, doesn’t warn Billy about her explicit sex scene in the indie film. This weird subplot doesn’t add anything to the story but an extra 10 minutes. The performances are

strong. Wahlberg plays what has become his standard, sullen role, but he is good at it. As the corrupt mayor, Crowe is at his most dangerous when he is charming. When the microphones and cameras are off, he reveals himself as a racist, misogynist homophobe from Queens. In other words, an Archie Bunker who looks respectable in a three-piece suit. After featuring in two of last year’s silliest films, “Rock of Ages” and “Playing for Keeps,” Zeta-Jones reminds the world she is still a fine actress and someday might again find a worthy film. As Wahlberg’s spunky secretary, bright-faced Tal may have lucked into her breakthrough role. The Israeli-born
actress has spent the last decade churning through television guest spots. Complicated corruption, double crosses and hidden motives are part of a standard hard-boiled detective story. But “Broken City” stuffs itself on these ingredients until the plot is more absurd than riveting. In the second half, Billy is trusted by people who should have no business trusting him. Despite its talent, “Broken City” is an unremarkable film. Soon enough, most everyone will forget about it. It’s not “Chinatown.”
