Crystal Lake’s Peyton Shaffer starring in Paramount’s ‘Annie’ By JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com When 10-year-old Peyton Shaffer grows up, she wants to be like singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth. “She’s my idol,” said the Crystal Lake girl. For now, she’s just enjoying life and her current role as Kate, one of the orphans in the musical “Annie” at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora. Peyton auditioned for the role sort of on a whim. She had urged her mother, Stacy, to let her audition for a Broadway casting call of “Annie,” but her mother came Peyton Shaffer across the Paramount casting call and suggested she try that instead. Peyton already had played several roles through Christian Youth Theater and Spotlight Youth Theater, as well as the role of “Little Sally” in “Urinetown the Musical” through GreenRoom Productions. A summer camp offered through Christian Youth Theater first drew Peyton in, and as soon as she turned 8, she wanted to audition for anything she could, her mother said. “She got bit by the [acting] bug,” said Stacy, who grew up loving musicals, but never performed herself. “We haven’t stopped since.” Peyton gave up soccer and figure skating and

She’s a little spunky monkey,” she said. “Maturity-wise, she’s a 30-year-old in a 10year-old’s body.” As Kate in “Annie,” Peyton is part of a musical that has gotten rave reviews. Directed and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell, the show runs through Dec. 30 at Paramount. “I just like how everyone is there and how happy they are to be there,” Peyton said. The show has given Peyton the opportunity to interact with professional performers, her mother said. “It’s been surreal for the whole family,” she said. “We’re super proud. I’m proud of all the little girls in the show. It’s such a nice group of kids.” Peyton already has been cast in Rockwell’s next production, “The Music Man,” as Amaryllis. That show runs Jan. 16 through Feb. 3 at the Paramount Theatre. The numerous rehearsals and shows can sometimes be hard, Peyton said, but, “the ending thing is just great.” “You’ve just got to go on stage and perform. It just feels so good performing in front of everyone,” she said.

Larry Gatlin and his brothers back on tour By JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers have been entertaining audiences since they were 2, 4 and 6 years old. The trio was born to harmonize. “God said, ‘Y’all sing,’ and that’s what we do,” Rudy Gatlin said. Their touring scheduled has tamed since the 1970s and ’80s when they topped the country charts with hits such as “All the Gold in California,” “Houston (Means That I’m One Day Closer to You),” and “Broken Lady.” But despite “The Adios Tour” they hosted in 1992 in which they bid fans goodbye, the trio has returned to the stage. They’ll perform their top hits, as well as some Christmas favorites, at 8 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Woodstock Opera House. Their return to touring, though on a lighter schedule, “just kind of worked out that way,” Rudy said, when a promoter gave them an offer they couldn’t refuse. Besides, as Rudy has said, singing is what they do. “I don’t envision ever not singing somewhere sometime, whether we do it together or individually,” Rudy

LARRY GATLIN & THE GATLIN BROTHERS WHEN: 8 p.m. Dec. 22 WHERE: Woodstock Opera House, 121 Van Buren St., Woodstock COST & INFO: Tickets are $75 all seats at 815-338-5300 or www.woodstockoperahouse.com. For information on Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers, visit gatlinbrothers.musiccitynetworks.com said. “They pay us good. They feed us good. And it’s a good showroom. As long as we have all those factors in play, we’ll continue to do it.” The brothers were raised on gospel music and first began entertaining audiences in churches. They later appeared on the “Slim Willet” radio and television shows in their small hometown of Abilene, Texas. Larry Gatlin, the main songwriter for the group, first landed a solo deal and invited his siblings to sing backup on his first two albums. The brothers were officially credited with 1977’s album, “High Time,” which featured the No. 1 hit, “I Just Wish

You Were Someone I Love.” They went on to record about 30 albums, including their latest, “Pilgrimage,” from 2009. The album has received little radio airplay, Rudy said, because, “They’re too busy stocking all those young country artists. “It didn’t take off like years gone by,” he said. He says this not with animosity, but with an understanding he’s garnered through the years of how the music business works. Hits and the artists who created them eventually become classics as new performers and artists take center stage. Newer generations want today’s country sounds, Rudy said. “That’s just the way of the world,” he said. He rarely listens to the radio these days, but is a fan of several current artists, such as Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry and Hunter Hayes. And Nashville right now has the greatest collection of singers, songwriters and musicians in the world, Rudy said. Referencing today’s television talent shows, he said, “I could find you 10 singers in about an hour that could out-sing all of them.” Much of today’s country music “is a little more rock-pop influenced

than I would go for,” he said. “I like good ol’ rock ’n’ roll. I like Led Zeppelin.” But it has its place, he said. “Quite a few of them out there, they’ve taken the country and kind of embellished it with more rock guitar and more production and more hot steel and fiddle, more rock-pop,” he said. “That’s fine. We don’t do that. We’ve done some of that, but it was toned down. Every generation takes it and pushes it a little further.” So when it comes to radio airplay, he understands the sounds have to be similar to what’s popular, he said. In its live shows, the band continues to draw in fans from all generations. The older fans stand and clap along to the hits, Rudy said. The younger fans hear them for the first time, he said. And the Christmas music resonates with everyone, he said. “It’s just some wonderful music,” Rudy said, joking that his favorite songs are those in which he has a solo medley. “We’re honored to go out there and do it,” he said. “As long as we can use that instrument and that God-given talent in the way I think God would want us to do, God wants us to use it.”

McBride will perform on “CMA Country Christmas,” which airs at 8 p.m. today on ABC. And she’s currently road with her “The Joy of Christmas” concert tour. The tour began Nov. 23 and takes McBride the Chicago Theatre on Friday. This is the first Christmas tour she’s done since 2006, so the singer best known for the coun hits “A Broken Wing,” “Wild Angels” and “This One’s For The Girls” says she’s looking forward performing songs she hasn’t had a chance to share with audiences for a while. “The fact that we only listen to it [Christmas music] for a short time each year keeps it from getting old,” McBride said. “I have so many memories associated with Christmas music and Christmas songs. It brings the season to life.” McBride, whose music has been a consistent presence on country radio for 20 years, spoke by telephone with The State Journal-Register of Springfield on a recent day off from performing. What are your favorite Christmas memories? My Christmas memories are of growing up in Kansas. We were always together on Christmas morning. My grandparents would come over and watch us open presents. Since I have my own family, we just hang out at home. We open presents on Christmas morning and spend the rest of the day just being together. A couple of times after Christmas, we’ve taken a trip to Vermont. We started doing that a few years ago. We go snowmobiling and just hang out. So your family is definitely an “openpresents-on-Christmas-Day” family? We open gifts on Christmas Day – maybe one present on Christmas Eve. Sometimes, we go to a movie on Christmas Eve. We got to go see “It’s a Wonderful Life” two years ago, and when we came out of theater, it was snowing. What are some of your favorite Christmas songs? When I did the “White Christmas” album (in 1998), I really wanted that record to be kind of classic, like the old Nat “King” Cole, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis albums. So we

Martina McBride facts • Five No. 1 singles on the Billboard magazine country music charts: “Wild Angels (1995), “A Broken Wing” (1997), “Wrong Again” (1998), “I Love You” (1999) and “Blessed” (2001). • “This One’s for the Girls” topped the Billboard adult contemporary music chart in 2004. • Won Academy of Country Music top female vocalist 2001-2003. • Won Country Music Association female vocalist of the year 1999 and 2002-2004. • Her Christmas recordings that have received radio airplay include “White Christmas,” “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts on an Open Fire),” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow.” did “White Christmas,” “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” From the more contemporary side of things, there’s “Please Come Home for Christmas.” I love to sing it. It’s a little more blues and R&B.

Tell me a little about the Christmas tour. We do the show in sections. We have the classic songs and we have seven costume changes. We come back in with a set that has “Run, Run, Rudolph,” “Please Come Home for Christmas.” We do a bunch of hymns: “What Child Is This,” “Silent Night.” The show is broken up into different fields. Will we hear any of the well-known Martina McBride hits? We have a couple songs we work into the show that fit the season and fit the show. It’s hard to go from “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to “When God-Fearin’ Women Get the Blues.” In what other ways is a Christmas tour different from, say, a summer tour playing stadiums and county fairs? It’s totally different. It’s all different songs. We have a set that has Christmas trees, a 12-piece band instead of a sevenpiece band, the guys are dressed in tuxedos. I do seven costume changes. We take the time to really pull out the stops, and make sure it’s visually beautiful to look at. It’s a show for the whole family. It’s a lot of fun to do.

Seven costume changes is about six more than I’d care to do. How do you make all of that happen without interrupting the flow of the concert? We have transition pieces with video and certain things. We do things very quickly – that is why they call them quick changes. ... It’s a different way of touring – it’s like if we did a variety show on TV. It’s pretty quick and pretty crazy back there (backstage). We have a quick-change booth and things I can change out of pretty quickly. We have a pretty extensive rehearsal to have enough time to get everything done. So far, things have gone smoothly. (In terms of singing), it’s a different skill set. It’s a different way of singing, a more proper way of singing. If you listen to the Christmas record, it’s a different kind of sound, more challenging. It’s fun for me as a vocalist. What do you want for Christmas this year? I just want my family to be healthy and together and have another year of us being healthy. That is the most important thing, is your health.

“This is 40”

By JEFFREY WESTHOFF

Perhaps the title to Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40” has been shortened from the more accurate “This Is 40 Minutes too Long.” That’s unlikely, though. Judd Apatow never shortens anything. In several alternate universes, the third act of “Funny People” still MORE hasn’t ended. ONLINE Watch a video of In what is either a “This is 40” at sequel or a spinoff, the PlanitNorthsupporting characters west.com that Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann played in “Knocked Up” have become the leads, and the marital problems and middle-age anxieties of Pete and Debbie are now front and center. The ramshackle excuse for a story takes place during the week that Pete and Debbie both turn 40. Debbie’s birthday comes first, and she wants everyone to believe she is holding at 38. She finds it difficult to maintain this deception with her husband openly turning the big four-o

STARRING: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Albert Brooks, Megan Fox PLOT: Rudd and Mann, reprising the supporting characters they played in “Knocked Up,” face new challenges to their marriage as they turn 40. RATED: R for sexual content, crude humor, pervasive language and some drug material RUNNING TIME: 2 hours, 13 minutes a few days later. The comedy is divided evenly between run of the mill fears about middle age and run of the mill marriage difficulties. Debbie, who is more paranoid about the age thing, insists the couple follow a healthier regimen. She has to stop sneaking smokes, and he has to stop sneaking cupcakes. As for the marriage issues, she complains he doesn’t communicate anymore, and he complains they don’t have as much sex as they used to. They both worry they have lost control of their children. Anyone longing for an R-rated “Everybody Loves Raymond” can rejoice. To reflect our economically dicey times, Pete and Debbie are overextended financially, although Debbie doesn’t know it yet. While secretly giving money to his cranky father (Albert Brooks), Pete has missed the most recent mortgage payment. His self-owned record label is in dire straits, and he is pinning everything on a Graham Parker comeback

album (Parker plays himself and is pretty funny). The lovely and charming Mann, as most viewers probably know, is Apatow’s wife. Her roles in his films have grown in prominence, so it doesn’t come as a surprise she is on camera more often than Rudd. Apatow and Mann’s two daughters, Maude and Iris, play Pete and Debbie’s two daughters, Sadie and Charlotte. The girls played the same roles in “Knocked Up,” but back then they didn’t have to do much besides romp in the backyard, play with bubbles and deliver cute, smartalecky lines in the Hollywood tradition of cute, smart-alecky kids. In “This Is 40,” the daughters are integral to the story. While this produces some decent material, particularly Sadie’s obsession with “Lost,” several scenes with the girls are among the film’s most awkward. They exist because Apatow wants to showcase his children, just as the film itself is largely an excuse to showcase his wife. Since breaking through with “The 40Year-Old Virgin,” Apatow has become a prolific producer who has shepherded an empire of comedies (including “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Bridesmaids”) featuring a stock company of actors and the same tone of affable vulgarity he perfected in “Knocked Up.” In “This Is 40,” which, believe it or not, is only the third film Apatow has directed since “Virgin,” he goes adrift of the formula that has served him so well.

Melissa McCarthy stars in “This is 40.”

• 40 Continued from page 15 In those earlier films, the language was often crude; but it remained believably in character. This time Apatow apparently encourage his players to not hold back and improvise the most disgustingly indecent dialogue they can imagine. They go far past the point of language human beings would conceivably say to each other in even impolite conversation. Apatow has placed the joke above the character, and is mining Kevin Smith’s worst instincts for the shock value of language. In earlier films, characters in Apatow-land remain likeable despite their uncouth behavior. But Pete and Debbie often come off as smug and privileged. Apatow miscalculates terribly in a scene where Debbie confronts a boy who texted an insult to Sadie. She threatens the boy with such acts of violence that the confrontation, which takes place at school, ought to lead to her arrest. Instead, it leads to a worse scene were Pete and Deb-

bie trick the boy’s mother (“Bridesmaids” alumna Melissa McCarthy) into humiliating herself during a meeting with the principal. Apatow’s supreme weakness as a filmmaker has been evident from the start. He loves his actors and their improvisational skills so much he cannot bear cut their performances. Even his first two films, heretofore knows as “the good ones,” are longer than they should be, but they make up for it by being funny from start to finish. “This Is 40” is intermittently funny. Probably this is intentional. Apatow seems to be stretching himself towards Paul Mazursky’s penchant for X-raying contemporary life. Even more than “Funny People” with its bloated final act, though, Apatow’s latest could have used the most discipline in the editing suite. Because the structure is so loose, and the style so observational and episodic, the cuts that should have been plain to Apatow are plain to the audience. First to go should have been the extended subplot with Megan Fox as an employee suspected of stealing from

the boutique that Debbie runs. It serves no purpose unless Apatow is ramping up another spinoff for Fox. “This Is 40” has moments where vulgarity doesn’t impede honesty and Apatow’s desire to show off his children doesn’t overshadow his depiction of a contemporary family. But these moments are separated by acres of guff, some of it painful to watch. If Apatow had the sense to get rid of that guff, he might have created the incisive portrayal of a marriage entering its second act that he intended. “C” You At The Movies - McHenry Downtown Theatre
