Albany Lions Club donates to Albany Fire Protection District

The Albany Lions Club donated $2,000 to the Albany Fire Protection District on Tuesday, April 5. The funds will be used to purchase grain bin rescue equipment. Morrison Police Arrests

On Saturday, April 2, about 1:35 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Wendy L. Davis, 56, of Morrison in the area of North Jackson Street and East Lincolnway for a moving violation. As a result of the stop, Morrison police arrested and charged Davis with speeding and driving under the influence (alcohol). Davis was transported to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

The public is reminded these are charges and all people are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

ISP District 1 activity for March

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Capt. Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for March.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 324 citations and 442 written warnings and made 16 criminal arrests during the month of March. Speeding accounted for 170 citations. There were 26 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated 14 traffic crashes, assisted 102 motorists and conducted 86 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 14 of which were placed out of service for safety reasons.

There were six arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, investigated one fatal traffic crash in March.

RCFPD monthly report for March

Volunteers with the Rapids City Fire Protection District responded to 42 calls for assistance in March. A breakdown of those calls:

Village of Rapids City – Five EMS calls and one traffic accident.

Village of Port Byron – 11 EMS calls.

Fire Protection District (Rural) – 15 EMS calls, two traffic accidents, two structure fires, one field fire and one brush fire.

Automatic aid was given to the Hillsdale Fire Department for one traffic accident, one power pole fire, one field fire and one structure fire.

T h e M o r r i s o n E m m a n u e l Reformed Church’s Voices of Praise invites the area to celebrate as it presents EVOP’s 13th annual spring cantata “We Will Stand!”

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday, April 22 and 24, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Voices of Praise is excited to be back after canceling the past two spring cantatas because of the pandemic. The stage will be filled with 75 singers who will present music from a variety of genres. Contemporary worship songs such as “Who You Say I Am,” “Jesus,” “Build My Life,” “Is He Worthy” and others are examples of music heard on Christian radio stations such as K-LOVE. Songs that encourage during difficult times will be presented including “Just As I Am/I Come Broken,” “I’ve Put My Hope in God” and “I Will Stand.” Also included are new songs that encourage Christians to go out and spread the good news. As you listen, there will be times when some of you will want to clap your hands or tap your feet, others will simply smile, and most of you, at some point, will have tears in your eyes.

Soloists joining the choir will be Ed Pruis, Ritch Lindstrom, Pam Muur, Lynelle Criss and Brittany VanDrew. Anna Ryder will serve as a narrator.

No tickets are needed for the 70-minute concert. There will be a free-will offering. All ages are welcome and the church is handicapped accessible. A fellowship hour hosted by the women of Emmanuel will follow all performances.

A free shuttle bus will be provided one hour prior to and following all three performances. The shuttle bus will pick people up from Ebenezer Reformed Church’s parking lot just two blocks south of Emmanuel’s campus and drop people off at the curb in front of Emmanuel.

Twin boys born to Randy and Sarah Denekas

Randy and Sarah Denekas of Hillsdale are happy to announce the birth o f t w i n b o y s . B r a y d e n F r e d e r i ck Denekas and Braxton Floyd Denekas were born at 2:12 p.m. March 23 at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. Brayden weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 18 3/4 inches long. Braxton weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19 inches long. They are identical twins.

Grandparents are Robin Denekas of Shannon, Jeff Denekas of Forreston and Fred and Linda Howard of Albany.

The babies were welcomed home by big brother, Jasper, 4, and family.

Fiesta Fundraiser raffle at Morrison Community Hospital

Morrison Community Hospital’s Fiesta Fundraiser raffle is open, with 12 items on display in the lobby. There are Cubs tickets, wine baskets, a $200 gift card to Great Wolf Lodge, two activity passes to Morrison School, plus MHS merchandise, area gift cards and a Dessert of the Month from the Morrison Hospital Dietary Department.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Morrison Hospital front desk. Cost is one ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20. The letter on the picture frame describing the item matches the letter of the box. Provide your name, email address and phone number to the front desk employee and you will get a ticket with a three-digit number assigned to you. Drop that in the box and wait until noon Friday, May 13, when winners are drawn. You don’t have to be present to win.

Couch to 5K training returns to Prophetstown Park District

Who is ready to get up and moving after the long, cold winter?

The Prophetstown Park District Rec Center is ready to help thanks to the return of the Couch to 5K training program.

The goal of the eight-week program is to give you a jump-start and lead you on the path to complete the Prophetstown Run Around 5K on July 2. Training starts May 7 and ends on race day. Training days are still to be determined based on the group and leader availability.

Fee is $30, which includes the cost of the Park District Prophetstown Run Around 5K.

Born: February 5, 1923 Died: March 31, 2022

Cheryl Cocking of Grinnell, Iowa, passed away on March 31, 2022, at the age of 99, after a short battle with cancer. She spent her final years at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, where she received wonderful care.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 5th, at the Grinnell

Christian Church.

Graveside services with military honors and burial were held following the funeral service in the Erie, Illinois Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell Christian Church.

The funeral services will be live-streamed on the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Cheryl Arlene Hoerler Cocking was born February 5, 1923, in Erie, Illinois, the daughter of Sam and Theresa (Greth) Hoerler. She attended grade school at Mineral Springs country school and Erie Community High School, both in Erie, Illinois, graduating in 1940.

Cheryl attended Moline Community Business College in Moline, Illinois. She worked as bookkeeper at Beck Jewelry & Optical Company, Moline, Illinois, Clerk-Typist at Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois, served as a Radioman 2nd class of the W.A.V.E.S. (U.S. Naval Reserve) during World War II, and worked as a bookkeeper for Erie Co-operative Elevator, Erie, Illinois. After ten years of not working outside the home, she worked as Secretary at Elizabeth Community School, Elizabeth, Illinois, Private Secretary at Kable News Company, Mt. Morris, Illinois, Clerk-Typist at The State University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and Bookkeeper/Credit Manager at Richardson Lumber and Supply, Inc. and Vosburg Building Center, Grinnell, Iowa, from which she retired in 1985 after 25 years. She was Broker/Owner of Cocking Realty, Grinnell, Iowa, and worked in real estate for 28 years.

Cheryl married Harold Wayne Cocking of Erie Illinois, on August 9, 1947, in Erie, Illinois. He passed in 2007. They have two sons, Jim (Mary) Cocking of Fairborn, Ohio and Kent (Laurie) Cocking of State Center, Iowa, and one daughter, Sherri (Jim) Barns of Bella Vista, Arkansas. They have six grandsons, James (Korey) Cocking of Brookville, Ohio, Chad (Tiffany) Cocking of Canton, Georgia, Brian Barns of Knoxville, Arkansas, Mike (Jessica) Barns of Joplin, Missouri, Aaron (Kristie) Cocking of Albertville, Minnesota, and Shane (Natalie) Cocking of Albertville, Minnesota, and one granddaughter, Kristin (Jeremy) Cooper of West Des Moines, Iowa. She also has 20 great grandchildren.

Cheryl was an active member of the Grinnell Christian Church where she was the chairman of the library committee for many years, taught Sunday School, including youth and adult classes, and sang in the choir until she became the pianist for the Senior Choir for 25 years. She was also active in many organizations where she was Past President of Junior Women’s Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50 years, a member of the Poweshiek County Board of Realtors, the Iowa Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. Cheryl was the State Director of WAVES National for 5 years, starting the first 6 units in Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister and brother, and one great grandchild.

BRIAN K. LANPHERE

Born: December 27, 1955 in Moline, IL Died: April 4, 2022 in Sterling, IL

Rhea D. Milnes, 90 of Milledgeville, died Wednesday, April 06, 2022 at Walnut Acres Nursing Home in Freeport. Rhea was born on December 14, 1931 in Prophetstown, the daughter of John and Hazel (Ackerman) Clary. She married Vernon S. Milnes, Sr. on February 18, 1948 in Morrison. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2014. Rhea worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll for 20 years. She was a member of Chadwick Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Doering of Prophetstown, Janet Compton of St. Augustine, FL, Carol Hill of Eureka, and Sharon Woodard of Milledgeville; two sons, Vernon Milnes, Jr. of Fulton and Melvin (Sue) Milnes of Forreston; one sister, Janice Hines of Milledgeville; twelve grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law, Cindy Milnes; sonsin-law, Mitch Woodard and T.C. Compton; grandson, Ryan Woodard; one brother, John R. Clary; and five sisters, Nadine Hanson, Oris Lawrence, Bernita Babin, Roene Hayen, and Jean Hill.

Visitation be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 10:00-11:00 A.M. at the Chadwick Hope United Methodist Church in Chadwick. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. at the church.

BRIAN K. LANPHERE, 66, of Lyndon, IL, died Monday, April 4, 2022 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling, IL. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown, with Rev. Dalmus Meeks officiating. There will be a memorial visitation prior to the service, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment will be at a later date, at the Sharon Cemetery in Spring Hill, IL. A memorial has been established.

Brian was born December 27, 1955 in Moline, IL, to Richard and Marilyn (Toppert) Lanphere. He was educated in the Prophetstown grade schools and was a 1975 graduate of Prophetstown High School. On August 10, 1979 he married Marjorie “Marge” A. Rick in Morrison, IL. Brian was a machinist for many years and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and gardening. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marge; one daughter, Jessica (Ron) Moffitt of Morrison, IL; three grandchildren, Aiden Lanphere, Kolten Moffitt and Karter Moffitt; one sister, Kathy (Frank) Schradeya of Rock Island, IL; two brothers, Thomas (Renee) Lanphere of Prophetstown and Mike (Kathy) Lanphere of Bettendorf, IA.

RHEA D. MILNES

Born: December 14, 1931 in Prophetstown, IL Died: April 6, 2022 in Freeport, IL James I. Hanson of Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Albany, Illinois, has died in Round Rock Texas. Cremation rites have been accorded, and his remains will be interned in Lusk Memorial Cemetery in Albany and scattered at Family Celebration of Life in Corpus Christi.

Jim was born July 16, 1947 in Clinton, Iowa to E. Don Hanson Sr. and Irene E. (Hansen) Hanson and graduated from Albany Grade School and Fulton High School.

An Army combat veteran, he trained as a paratrooper and served in Viet Nam as a helicopter crew chief and machine gunner. During an extended tour of duty he was awarded the Air Medal for Heroism with the “V” device. He attended Santa Barbara City College in California where he was named to the Deans Honor List. Jim was a member of Hanson-Kennedy American Legion Post in Albany. He was an artist, producing many paintings which he shared with family and friends. Among his favorite pastimes were taking long walks around Albany, participating in Civil War reenactments, flea markets and cruising the river on Mississippi paddle wheelers with Linda.

He is survived by his wife, Linda D. Edwards of Corpus Christi, her children, grandchildren and great grandchild. Other survivors are his brother Don Hanson, Jr, wife Mary Kay, of Austin TX and his sister Elizabeth C. Wertz, husband James, of Sun Lakes Arizona and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Thomas J. Hanson.

RICHARD ‘DICK’ L. PORTH

Born: July 16, 1951 in McCook Died: April 1, 2022 in Prescott, AZ

Richard “Dick” L. Porth, 70, formerly of El Paso, IL, passed away on April 1, 2022 in Prescott, AZ. He was born on July 16th, 1951, in McCook, NE and raised in Woodford County before relocating to Whiteside County to raise his family and retiring to Prescott Valley, AZ.

Dick is survived by his beloved Audrey, their daughter Danielle, and his three sons Matthew Porth of Chicago, IL; Alex Porth of Montgomery, IL; Andrew Porth of Morris, IL; three brothers, Ron (Becky) Porth of Bloomington, IL; Tim (Denise) Porth of El Paso, IL; Jeff Porth of Deerfield Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Ilene Porth; one brother, Terry Porth.

Dick was employed at Vern’s Farm Systems in Hooppole, IL for 37 years.

Throughout his life, Dick was an avid golfer and fisherman, who also enjoyed Chicago Cubs baseball and Tennessee Lady Vols basketball. A prolific storyteller, Dick was known for entertaining all those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022 at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in El Paso, IL. Father Robert Rayson will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9-11 a.m. prior to services. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso.

MERLE JACOB BIELEMA, 90, of Thomson, IL, died Saturday, April 9, 2022, at his home. A private family memorial service will be held with Rev. Michael Hooker, pastor of First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, and Mr. Ken Renkes co-officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Fulton Chapel of the Bosma Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Inurnment will be at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson, IL. A memorial has been established to First Christian Reformed Church.

Merle was born March 25, 1932, in Fulton, IL, to Henry R. and Marie (Diephuis) Bielema, Sr. He attended the York Community School in Thomson. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Carol J. Miller on June 9, 1956, in Thomson. She died October 27, 2005. Merle was first employed by BF Goodrich in Clinton, IA, L.E. Myers Company and Savanna Army Depot. He retired in 1995, as a Lock Master of the Lock and Dam 14 in LeClaire, IA. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, where he was an elder and deacon. He was also a member of the Thomson American Legion for over 50 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Randy) Atherton of Thomson, IL and Beth (Joe) Caven of Clinton, IA; one son, Bruce (Lori) Bielema of Thomson, IL; seven grandchildren, Erin (Tommy) Miner, April Atherton, Audrey Atherton, Evan (Kadina) Atherton, Annette (Ryan) Clark, Brooke (Leo) Santillan and Courtney Lown; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry (Susan Tappe) Bielema, Jr. of Potosi, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; one sister, Wilma M. Ottens-Huizenga; one grandson-in-law, Brad Lown.

GLENDA J. NORMAN

Born: August 21, 1946 in Morrison, IL Died: April 7, 2022 in Camanche, IA

Glenda Jean Norman, 75, of Camanche, IA, formerly of Erie, IL, died Thursday, April 7, 2022 at home. Cremation was accorded and a private family memorial gathering will be held. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established. Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Glenda was born August 21, 1946 in Morrison, Illinois, a daughter of Gerald and Marian (Tessman) Rummel. She graduated from Lyndon High School. Glenda worked Security at the Exelon Nuclear Plant in Cordova from where she retired.

Glenda was an avid sports fan and followed all of the Chicago teams, especially the Cubs. In her earlier years she was an accomplished bowler and enjoyed playing in a number of bowling leagues. She was most passionate about her grandchildren and loved spending time with them and following their activities.

She is survived by her son, Mike (Tracey) Norman, Schaghticoke, NY; daughter, Mindy Shaw (Bryan Ranchino) Camanche, IA; son-in-law, Brett McCormick, Erie; grandchildren, Emily and Brett Norman, Peyton Tiesman (Ryan Peyton), Bryce McCormick (Jarett Svihlik), Carson McCormick, Devin and Cody Norman, Jacab and Logan Shaw; great grandchildren, Rylee and Ryker Tiesman, and Kinnick Norman; sister, Mary Jo (Phil) Tichler, Morrison; brother-in-law, Richard Larkins; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. SHIRLEY ANN TEMPLE

Born: November 2, 1933 in Radnor Township, Illinois Died: February 7, 2022 in Honorhealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical CTR

Shirley Ann Temple, Daughter of Carl and Ida Koehler of Tampico, Illinois. Shirley was the anchor of her family and a beloved inspiration. Shirley is survived by her children Paula, Michael, Kyle and their families. A celebration of life is planned to be held in Scottsdale Arizona.

Larry Wilkens, age 72, of Cantrall, formerly of Fulton, IL, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at his residence. He was born on March 19, 1950 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Cornelius and Dena (Klooster) Wilkens.

Larry married Mary Bell on January 12, 1991 in Weldon, California.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Lisa (Dennis) Long; granddaughter, Dustana Long; siblings, Darlene Hill of California, Beverly (Paul) Cascio of Washington, and Roger (Carol) Wilkens of Illinois; brothers-in-law, Fred (Marilyn) Bell and Jerry (Cathy) Bell; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry is preceded in death by a grandson, Brendan Long; sister, Evelyn Whitwell; brother, Arnold Wilkens, and his parents.

He graduated from Erie High School in Illinois, and also attended Clinton Community College in Iowa.

Larry worked for the Quad Cities Nuclear Station in Cordova, Illinois for ten years, Southern California Edison in Kernville, CA for twelve years, and retired from the Athens School District after twelve years of service as the Transportation Director.

He rode in the RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) for several years. Larry loved woodworking and was very mechanically inclined. Larry loved to be outdoors, enjoyed yardwork, and had a strong passion for farming. He camped all across the country from Illinois to California.

Larry is a member of the Cantrall United Methodist Church, and held the secretary/ treasurer position for the United Methodist Men for several years.

The funeral for Larry was Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the Cantrall United Methodist Church, 9406 North State Route 29, Cantrall, Illinois.

HELEN M. WHITMORE

Born: April 14, 1925 Died: April 5, 2022

Helen M. Whitmore, 96, of Hillsdale, IL, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Geneseo Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A memorial visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to the memorial service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Helen Whitmore Memorial Fund.

Helen was born April 14, 1925, the daughter of Lloyd and Grace (Brennan) Hanna, in Joslin, IL. She graduated from Hillsdale High School. On June 9, 1946, Helen married Lloyd Whitmore at a service held at United Methodist Church, Joslin, IL. He preceded her in death. Her first job, right out of high school, was as an employee at the State Bank of East Moline. It was a job she was immensely proud of. She was employed as the assistant city clerk for the City of Geneseo for over 20 years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of Erie Christian Church and was a long-time member of the Atkinson Congregational Church. Helen enjoyed sewing, china painting, ceramics, quilting, and creating stained glass art with her husband. She loved spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Jane Helke, Orion, IL, and Allen Whitmore, Joslin, IL; grandchildren, Bryan (Kerry) Helke, and Kristin Carpenter; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Abigail Helke, and Sincere and Kasey Carpenter; and sisters, Nancy (Robert) Wolf, Erie, IL, and Mary (Lantz) Ropp, Geneseo, IL.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Grace; her loving husband, Lloyd; and brothers, Charles and Harry Hanna.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hillcrest Home for their compassionate care of Helen.

RICHARD DOUGLAS BRADLEY

Born: December 16, 1930 in Morrison, Il Died: November 15, 2021 in Plano, TX

Dad’s final resting place will be next to mom and my brother at Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown Il. in the town he so loved. There will a graved site ceremony April 23, 2022, at 10:00 am, at the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown Il.
