Fireworks, tacos, music in Hooppole July 2 Firemen water fights to be held in August BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media

In a normal year, the annual Hooppole Fun Day consists of a parade, kids’ games, frog jumping contest, and a community potluck, on the Saturday before the 4th of July. Due to ongoing Covid-19 uncertainties, the Fun Day committee cancelled this year’s event, but the village board came up with a last-minute plan to offer a scaledback celebration on Friday, July 2. Festivities will start at 6 p.m. at the village park next to the fire station with live music, Edna Jo’s Tacos, and fireworks at dusk, said Mayor Sheldon Miller. There will be a variety show featuring local talent before the fireworks, and Lucky Cochran and the Persuaders will play afterwards. “It’s a tradition we want to keep alive,” Miller said, noting that there was no fundraising this year, so donations will be accepted. Organizers look forward to bringing the full event back next year, after a two-year hiatus. The Hooppole Fire Department is also planning its water fight on Saturday, Aug. 21 with more details to come. The annual event was cancelled last year due to Covid.

Hooppole firefighters Bill Hartman, Terry Sommers, Sheldon Miller, and Brad Rosenow competed in the Fireman Water Fights as part of Polo’s Town & Country Days on June 19. The Hooppole Fire Department is also planning its water fight for Saturday, Aug. 21.

DONATIONS SOUGHT

Donors are needed to battle blood shortage Do you want to help curb the recent blood shortage? Well, here’s one local opportunity where you can help. A blood drive will be held on Thursday, July 8 at the United Methodist Church, 202 Lincoln Street, in Tampico. The blood drive begins at 7 p.m. The American Red Cross continues to experience a severe blood shortage that is negatively affecting blood product availability across the country. Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give now and help ensure hospital shelves are stocked with blood products. Right now, the Red Cross is working around the clock to provide blood products to hospitals responding to an unusually high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants. As a result of the blood shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply

stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care. In addition, while summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline, this year is particularly challenging as many Americans receive their vaccinations and resume summer activities after more than a year of limited interactions and travel, leading to lower donor turnout.

The need for blood doesn’t take a holiday break − patients still depend on lifesaving transfusions. Donors are needed now to prevent further delays to patient care. If you can’t make it Tampico on July 8, schedule an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-7332767, or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. As a thank-you, all those who come to a donation center to give July 1 through July 6 will receive a Red Cross embroidered hat, while supplies last. And, donors who come to give July 7-31 will receive a $10 Amazon. com Gift Card by email, plus a chance to win gas for a year (a $5,000 value). Terms and conditions apply; visit rcblood.org/ fuel. In most cases, those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate. However, knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine they received is important in determining donation eligibility.

YOUR HEALTH

The importance of becoming a better nose breather BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The Framingham study is probably the most famous long term study for following the health of people for many years. Many lifestyle recommendations have followed from the study. After decades, researchers have discovered a remarkable finding that lung capacity is the single most important factor for longevity. More important than diet, genetics, blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, exercise, etc. Naturally with something this important, it is essential to perform it correctly. The ancient Indians and Chinese, along with other ancient cultures, understood that nose breathing is essential for proper function. Nose breathing increases the molecule nitric oxide. In fact, you produce six times more of this molecule by nose breathing over mouth breathing. Nitric oxide expands blood vessels and is a first line of defense. Also, it greatly reduces inflammation which is a huge component of COVID and other killer viruses. Nasal breathing filters out germs

by the tiny hairs known as cilia. These are not the hairs you can see. They remove over 90% of inhaled particles. This process does not happen with mouth breathing. Also, as a surprise, smokers who did not have COPD, actually did better than expected. It is theorized because smoking raises nitric oxide and often promotes nose breathing. Of course, COPD related to smoking definitely worsens outcomes. Nose breathing also lessens tendencies to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea has been associated with worse heart disease, hypertension and other significant health studies. Mouth breathing has lower oxygen. Additional benefit of nose breathing include better performance for men for erection function, better memory, better mood and better vagus nerve function. Steps to becoming a better nose breather include: 1) Becoming aware. Focus on closing your lips unless eating, talking, etc. 2) Monitor yourself. Set your alarm

hourly or post reminders. Breathing correctly during the day enhances the chances of proper breathing at night. Breathing right at night can be done by using special taping measures that your doctor can review with you. Surgical tape in the size of a postage stamp at the center of the lips provides good resistance. Adhesive strips may be SomniFix may assist in promoting nose breath-

ing. Additional measures include sitting up straight in the daytime inhaling and exhaling gently. Actually, pinching the nostrils shut and shaking the head vigorously may promote the opening of nasal passages. Pursed lip breathing may be helpful. Neti pots have been used for thousands of years successfully. Eucalyptus oil under the nose may help as well.

MORRISON

Morrison Community Vacation Bible School was held June 14-18 at the Morrison Junior High with 145 kids registered along with 50 volunteers. This year’s theme was “Roar.” The kids learned through games, lessons, crafts, skits, singing and Bible verses

that when life is scary, sad, unfair, and good, that God is good! This year’s mission was to fill backpacks with school supplies and deliver to local schools in the fall. The class who raised the most money would get to soak the pastors at the end of the

week. A total of $1,474 was raised. The winners were the junior high group. Churches that participated were Bethesda, Brethren in Christ, United Methodist Church, Emmanuel Reformed, Ebenezer Reformed, Open Bible and Crossroads.

Thanks to all volunteers, those who donated supplies, the school for allowing us use the building, and Heusinkveld, Inc. for making the t-shirts. A huge thank you to Dairy Queen for providing Dilly Bars to the children and volunteers.

Fantastic Foam presentation at the River Valley District Library

WHITESIDE NEWS Shaw Media / ShawLocal.com • Tuesday, Jun 29, 2021

Sarah Ford/For Shaw Media

ABOVE: “Lab assistants” Quinn Bittner, left, Kaylee Overton, Aaron Williams, and Cayson and Easton Ziegler add a catalyst to a cylinder at the “Fantastic Foam” presentation at River Valley District Library on Friday, June 25, while Rick Eugene Brammer of Absolute Science leads the experiment. ABOVE RIGHT: After pouring in the solution, a rainbow of foam fizzed out of the cylinders. RIGHT: Lucy Sallows smiles as her hair stands on end during a demonstration of electricity with Rick Eugene Brammer at River Valley District Library on Friday. The originally scheduled Absolute Science “Bubble Stations” program was cancelled due to the threat of severe weather, so the kids headed indoors and upstairs for fun experiments on electricity, gravity, and foam.

Happy Spring! It is a GREAT time to list your home!

Emmanuel Independence Day worship planned

Plan to join us on Sunday, July 4 for a very special worship service as we celebrate Independence Day and honor those who have served and are serving in our Armed Forces. This will be a very special tribute and we encourage you to invite veterans and service men and women to join you as you come to worship at Emmanuel that day.

The Sanctuary Choir will be singing “Salute to the Armed Forces,” a special anthem for the day and favorite patriotic songs will be sung. Ministry Coordinator Rich Criss will serve as organist and will play “Patriotic Medley” for the prelude and “Stars and Stripes Forever” for the postlude. Pastor Luke begins his new message series, “The Armor of God” with the message “Put On the Armor of God!” with scripture drawn from Ephesians 6: 10-20. Coffee and fellowship follow worship in the Christ Center. All are welcome and invite your friends!! More information is readily available on the church’s website, www.emmanuelreformedchurch.org or by calling the church office at 815-772-3890.

Fourth of July at United Methodist Church

The Sabbath and the fourth of July fall on the same day, so the United Methodist Church in Morrison will celebrate this day of great consequence with a bang. The morning’s worship will be highlighted by patriotic music, flag waving and a nod to our U.S. Constitution. On this the anniversary of the 245th signing of the Declaration of Independence, the congregation will join together reciting the Preamble to the Constitution. Pat Cassens and John Frame will play an organ/piano duet, “America, the Beautiful” and a vocal ensemble will perform “God Bless America” with the congregation joining in this well-known anthem complete with flag waving. Worship will conclude with the singing of “America.” We invite all to join us for our 9:00 a.m. worship as we praise God for his goodness.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

Local results from the IWCOA Class 1A State Meet BY BRIAN WEIDMAN

bweidman@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Oregon senior Andrew Herbst was able to manage one fantastic finish Thursday afternoon at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Class 1A State Tournament. But he needed two. Herbst finished off his career with a

runner-up finish at 145 pounds, after dropping an 8-6 decision against Kankakee Bishop McNamara’s Blain Christie. It was Christie who escaped with :39 left in the third period, and that was followed by a takedown with :23 that all but sealed it. Two other area wrestlers, Newman freshman Brady Grennan and Oregon sophomore Seth Stevens, also earned medals. Grennan won four wrestleback

bouts to take third place at 113 pounds, capped by a pin of Canton’s Trevor Hodges in 5:14. It wrapped up a 27-3 season. Stevens placed fifth at 138 pounds, and didn’t have to wrestle in the medal round. His scheduled opponent, Harvard’s Ivan Rosas, was disqualified after being accused of biting his semifinal-round opponent, Dakota’s Tyler Simmer. Rosas did not wrestle again. Losing in the third round of wrestle-

backs were West Carroll 120-pounder Wyatt Doty and Erie-Prophetstown 285-pounder Elijah Friedrichsen. Losing in the second round of wrestlebacks were Dixon 113-pounder Chris Sitter, Oregon 113-pounder Edwin Estrada, Newman 120-pounder Carter Rude, West Carroll 152-pounder Kelden McCombie, and Morrison 182-pounder Kayden White Fulton 182-pounder Ethan Rash dropped both of his bouts.
