V LENTINE’S DAY VA A AY

RON HURST

I confess, my head is spinning over St. Valentine. To T begin with, there appear to have been more than one sainted Valentine; and the confusion is great enough that St. Valentine was omitted from the ‘Catholic Calendar of Saints’ as revised in 1969. On the other hand, “Martyr Valentinus the Presbyter and those with him at Rome” is still on the list of saints proposed for veneration by all Catholics. So there is something to the story; but how did Valentine’s Day become a celebration of romance?

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.” Of course, English hadn’t been standardized in Chaucer’s day so perhaps you’d like a translation - “For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird comes to choose his mate.” Now as the engagement had taken place in May, 1381, that left February out of the running - but not Saint Valentine - no, not the one buried at the Via Flaminia, the one who had been the bishop of Genoa. In the liturgical calendar of Chaucer’s day May 2 was the saints’ day for Valentine of Genoa (circa A.D. 300); and in some way, this does connect ‘Valentine’s Day’ with romantic love, and who knows, perhaps (with an apology to the Bard) all’s well that ends well. All, however, did not end happily for Richard and Anne.

A pair of antiquarians, Alban Butler (1756, ‘Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and other Principal Saints’) and Francis Douce (1807), attempted to explain Valentine’s day as, perhaps, Christianity’s attempt to co-opt ancient, and dismally pagan, Roman festivals. Butler seems to have fabricated a festival to illustrate his argument, writing, “To “T abolish the heathens lewd superstitious custom Saturday, February 9th * 10:30 - 3:30 of boys drawing the names of girls, in honour of their goddess Februata Juno, *With the purchase of a pair of “Piercing” Earrings. on the fifteenth of this month, several Our Ear Piercing is done by Medical Doctor. Perhaps they could have used a little lupercalia magic, as their marriage Lupercalia was celebrated at about the produced no heirs. This led to a clouded same time as we celebrate Valentine’s line of succession to the English throne Day, so there is a certain ‘post hoc’ resulting, in the 1450s, in the Wars of the synergy to the claim. For those of Roses fought between two ‘cadet’ lines of you who’ve never heard of it, it was inheritance - the house of York Y and the described by Plutarch, born (for those house of Lancaster. While this has little of you who saw the great PBS series) to do with romance (but Shakespeare’s during the reign of the Roman Emperor ‘Richard III’ has its moments - with a politic Claudius, as follows. “Lupercalia, of leer or two), it may be worth noting that which many write that it was anciently while the English were fighting it out, one celebrated by shepherds, and has also of the House of York’ Y s collateral relatives, some connection with the Arcadian Mary of Burgundy, was being romanced Lycaea. KATHY CHAMBERLIN

Kathy Chamberlin of Westchester is fighting cancer for the fourth time, with her latest diagnosis last year. Her 12-year-old nephew, Nick Brown of Darien, donated his birthday presents in December to Relay For Life in honor of his grandma and Chamberlin. Danny Ciamprone — dciamprone@shawmedia.com

Three-time cancer survivor faces fourth diagnosis By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

DARIEN — Kathy Chamberlin is a selfdescribed fighter, and in the three matches she’s gone head-to-head with cancer, she’s come out on top. But the secondleading cause of death in the U.S. came knocking on her door again last year. Chamberlin overcame breast cancer three times during 1989 to 1995, but now she faces a cancer of “unknown primary,” meaning doctors aren’t sure where it started from. She has cancer in her lungs, chest, node areas and in her femur bone. Fear though, is something Chamberlin doesn’t have. “I was just extremely thankful that I did have three prior dealings with it because to me one of the greatest fears is the fear of the unknown,” Chamberlin said. “I think I’ll be okay as long as I’m doing what I need to be doing.” Last December, Nick Brown of Darien, Chamberlin’s nephew, donated his birth-

Since her latest diagnosis, the Westchester resident hasn’t felt sorry for herself or spent any time loathing. Instead, Chamberlin has made it a goal to help people in unique ways, such as buying strangers groceries. “The cancer made me wonder if my job wasn’t done yet here,” she said. “If I

can do something to help somebody else out, I try to.” Last Christmas, a young woman was shopping with her 8-year-old son, and Chamberlin said she offered to buy the gifts in her cart. “She was just so flabbergasted,” she said. “I looked at her son and I said, ‘This is just to show you that believe it or not, there are still some nice people in this world.’” Chamberlin made it clear she didn’t do this “to be a goody-two-shoes,” but when the opportunity strikes, Chamberlin is ready — not just to do it as a good deed, but also because she has a “crazy sense of humor.” She likes seeing the reaction on people’s faces from her spontaneous actions. “It’s funny because when I do this, the thought comes to my mind that these people might think I’m a real lunatic or something,” she said. “I don’t want to have to try and explain this.”

“I don’t even have any.” Kristin Voorhees Hinsdale

Much of Chamberlin’s ability to laugh in the face of hardship came from her mother, who at age 29 had a valve in her heart open to the size of a pin. Her heart stopped for three minutes during the operation and she was pronounced legally dead, Chamberlin said, but doctors revived her with a defibrillator. “That’s where I get my fighting from and why I’m a little less fearful of medical things,” she said. “I come from a line of fighters.” Chamberlin may joke sometimes, but she doesn’t take her cancer lightly. “I think the main thing is, I do feel I am more or less on a death watch when I think of the worst-case scenario,” she said. “It spurs me to be more serious about doing as much good as I can while I am still here.” Chamberlin couldn't go out on that note, though. “Some people retire at 63, I get cancer,” she said, laughing. “I’m getting to be a pro at this.”

“I think I’m going to get together with friends and watch the game.” Randy Jahn Visiting Hinsdale

Kidz in the Mix looks to win major reality show competition By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

HINSDALE — In a utopia, David Bowie would be the director of the children’s TV show “Yo Gabba Gabba” and the choreographer would be Tanja Pazou. David Bowie wasn’t there, nor was DJ Lance Rock, but Pazou was — armed with a dance team of girls ages 6 to 11 she instructs called Kidz in the Mix. Kidz in the Mix is a dance group based out of Hinsdale that isn’t just focused on dance, but also on other elements put into each routine, such as yoga and gymnastics. Pazou stresses proper nutrition and being environmentally sound so the kids can take these important lessons with them after they leave class. “First it was a hip-hop dance class for kids and then I realized only dance isn’t going to make it exciting for kids because they have a very short attention span,” Pazou said. “I added yoga to it and they loved the fact we mix that together.” Pazou was born in Germany, where she started choreography as early as age 11. After moving to Los Angeles, Pazou said she worked with artists such as 2Pac, Snoop Dogg and MC Hammer. She also started a dance class there that predated Kidz in the Mix. “The classes in L.A. were called The Flying Banana Peels, and that group led up to Kidz in the Mix,” she said. “It was like a theater dance group — in fact, David Hasselhoff’s kids were in it.” Pazou then moved to Chicago, where she has taught in more than 10 dance studios. About six years ago, she brought Kidz in the Mix to Hinsdale, where her students practice three times a week for one hour at Immanuel Hall, the Community House or at the Oak Brook Park District.

Dance instructor Tanja Pazou leads Kidz in the Mix in their routine on Jan. 23. Sarah Minor — sminor@shawmedia.com

“The unique thing about Kidz in the Mix is that the choreography is different,” she said. “It is the combination of dance and yoga in one class and we don’t go for the typical recitals. We go for things like the Chicago Music Awards and we go for big productions. The kids have tremendous teamwork and the way they just interact with each other is really kind and sweet.” It took about five or six weeks for this group to learn the routine, but with good cause. Late last month, the group auditioned for a major performance reality show — the largest the kids have ever attempted. “This is going to be massive,” Pazou told the dancers right before their second-tolast practice leading up to the tryout. “Not just big, massive. There are going to be 40,000 people there.” After hearing the number, some of the girls gasped with a mix of excitement and

nervousness. “Don’t get nervous,” said 9-year-old Ann Waldo of Hinsdale. “We are awesome.” With the confident words lifting members’ spirits, practice was ready to begin. The girls were decked out in long-sleeved black outfits with psychedelic strands of paint swirling throughout. David Bowie may not have been directing, but he might have had a say in their silver boots, each covered in peace emblems. “I get these kids and some of them are very shy and introverted,” Pazou said. “My challenge is to get that amazing passion for dance, to get that out of them.” That passion was clear as each girl smiled, jumped and danced with enthusiasm to the techno accompaniment. The kids would go from dancing to yoga followed by handstands without missing a beat. “I just really like it because of the dancing

and having fun,” said 10-year-old Jessica Miller of Westmont, who’s been with Kidz in the Mix for about two years. “Tanja is a great teacher.” Pazou said this season’s group has come a long way since rehearsals first began. “It’s been a total 360-degree change because they have to learn to be disciplined,” she said. Learning the routine comes in different parts. First, the dance and gymnastics; then, there’s figuring out what each girl’s talent is to showcase. “In time if they do it in repetition, then that’s the key,” Pazou said. “You have to make them understand the routine and do it perfectly.” This isn’t the first time Kidz in the Mix will be on the big stage. Last year, they won the Chicago Music Awards. But this competition isn’t just local; this will incorporate acts across the nation. However, when asked if they were going to win, every girl shouted, “yes!” Pazou said the confidence of her group has grown each week. When Lainey Harvey, 10, of Willowbrook started doing Kidz in the Mix, Pazou said she was nervous because of a peanut allergy — being in a group of kids who didn’t know that was a big deal for her. But in the four years Lainey has been with the group, “she shows her talent and it helps her in life,” Pazou said. “It helps everyone here no matter if they become superstars or not,” she explained. Before the end of their recent rehearsal, Pazou gave the girls a pep talk. It was one that left them gleaming, and it must have made a difference. The show’s producers reportedly were impressed with their act. “I need you to be pumped,” Pazou told her students. “Pumped like a tiger. No matter what the odds are, you are going to deliver the best performance ever.”

ER Express looks to make wait times easier at Adventist Hinsdale By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

HINSDALE — Unless the situation is critical, the national average wait time for an emergency room visit is four hours. To help combat this, and make going to the ER a little less stressful, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital introduced a program called ER Express back in October. The program allows patients to reserve a time slot to see a physician in the emergency room for conditions that are not life threatening. “Hinsdale is a very competitive market and there are a lot of hospitals in the metro Chicago area,” said Sahil Patel, executive vice president of ER Express.

“Patients increasingly want convenience and choice when they pick a health care provider.” ER Express, based in Atlanta, Ga., offers the convenience with its reservation services, which first launched in 2011. Since then, ER Express has been used in about 20 hospitals. “The doctors and nurses liked it because it increased patient satisfaction,” Patel said. “In the emergency department, they’re being measured on patient satisfaction and there’s a lot of pressure from the board and CEO level to consistently improve patient satisfaction.” In order to reserve a spot, patients can visit a hospital’s website and select an available time slot so they can wait in

their own home and not the waiting room. The goal of ER Express is similar to that of a pizza delivery, in that hospital personnel strive to have patients see a doctor within 30 minutes of their reservation. “The most common complaint in the emergency room department is the long wait, so the fact that this helps address this issue is great,” Patel said. “The other reason doctors and nurses like it is that it helps relieve some of the congestion in the emergency department. Usually between 4 and 10 p.m. every day there tends to be a mad rush in the ER.” With Adventist Hinsdale now on board, Patel said he thinks the hospital better differentiates itself among others in the area. The local hospital implemented a broader

online strategy that includes a dedicated website for its emergency department, where patients can find the ER department easily and quickly. “It’s only been up at Hinsdale for a little while, but what the service has seen is that if a patient has to decide between two hospitals, and one offers this service, they would go there without taking into consideration other factors such as how familiar they are with the doctor or personnel,” Patel said. To make a reservation through ER Express, visit hinsdaleer.com. Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is located at 120 North Oak St. For the information desk, call 630-856-7040.

Church’s music program a true joy to behold

To the Editor Although the Christmas season is over, seeing some lights and decorations around is a reminder of the joy we experienced then. We want that joy to linger in our hearts all year round. If you were fortunate to attend one of the Christmas liturgies at St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church in Hinsdale as a parishioner or visitor, you are probably still recalling the joy experienced when you heard and participated in the beautiful music. Different liturgies featured various groups, such as the children’s choir, a brass ensemble, or a cantor with organist or pianist. Of course, the congregation participated in all the liturgies. The midnight and 10:30 a.m. liturgies featured the adult choir, chamber orchestra, organ and piano. They performed music by both classical and contemporary composers in settings of traditional Christmas carols. I can comment only on the 10:30 a.m. liturgy, which I attended. To hear the outstanding performances of the singers, instrumentalists and accompanists was truly a heavenly, uplifting and moving experience. Especially extraordinary were the exuberant and exciting rendition of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” with an added fanfare, and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” (my personal favorites). Highway department offers variety of local services

A Welcome message greets students and visitors to the new Goddard School now open in Darien. Sarah Minor — sminor@shawmedia.com

Thumbs Up — An Oak Brook man recently quit Wall Street to help children. Michael Petrucelli has opened Goddard School in Darien, a year-round school for children 6 weeks to 6 years old focusing on the “fun” in learning. Petrucelli spent 20 years in the financial services industry but wanted to do something more worthwhile. It’s great to hear about people who make big changes in their lives to benefit others. Thumbs Up — The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The group provides healthcare to women and children who are underinsured or have no health insurance. Hinsdale resident Deanna Koffron is leading the charge in fundraising for needy families for her work with the Hinsdale Auxiliary as president the past two years. It’s a true credit to Koffron and members of the local auxiliary to dedicate themselves to such a good cause. Have any Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down ideas? Send them to opinions@mysuburbanlife.com.

The Downers Grove Township supervisor’s department in cooperation with the highway department is looking to form a citizens response team to help with emergencies. The $5,000 yearly cost would be split between the two departments with most of the cost being used for volunteer training. The only township to have an active Community Emergency Response Team program is Milton Township. One of the beneficial services the CERT program provided in Milton was to aid the highway department with Lawrence C. storm damage cleanup after this past summer’s microAnderson burst. Members of the CERT removed limbs and brush from the right of way to the highway crews, which chipped the debris nonstop into trucks. More recently, the Milton CERT program helped the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department with a search-and-rescue call at the Morton Arboretum. If you are interested in volunteering for the CERT program, go to miltonCERTsignup@aol.com, email Executive Director Ralph Hinkle at miltoncorps2@aol.com or call 630-668-1616. The highway department maintains more than 70 miles of road within Downers Grove Township. Our crew is responsible for plowing and salting these roads during the winter months. We have an ordinance with DuPage County regarding parking restrictions on all streets during the winter months when it snows 1 inch or more. We would appreciate it if residents would keep all vehicles off the street whenever a snowfall is predicted so that we can use our plowing/salting equipment more efficiently. With everyone’s cooperation, we will provide the best job of snow and ice removal possible. The highway department works with COM2 Recycling as a drop-off location for electronic recycling. This is available for all township residents from 8 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of every month except holiday weekends. Electronics may be dropped off at the highway garage, 318 E. Quincy St. in Westmont, every third Saturday of the month during drop-off hours only. For more information, go to www.dgtownship.com or call the highway department office at 630-719-6625. Lawrence C. Anderson is the highway commissioner for Downers Grove Township

Willowbrook Mayor Robert Napoli to not seek re-election SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

WILLOWBROOK — Willowbrook Mayor Robert Napoli has announced he will no longer seek re-election because of business, family and health reasons. “I have had the privilege and honor these last four years of having served the people of Willowbrook as their elected village mayor,” Napoli said in a statement. “I shall always be grateful to them for the faith they had in me when entrusting this office to my care.” Napoli was appointed acting president in July 2008 after serving as trustee for 11 years. He was then elected mayor in April 2009. Napoli intends to serve out the remainder of his term, which will end once a new mayor is elected after the April 9 general election.

LETTERS Continued from Page 10 St. Isaac Jogues Parish is truly blessed to have Nick Thomas as our music director/ organist. He is a very gifted musician and obviously dedicated and enthusiastic about leading the congregation in sung prayer, not only at Christmastime but throughout the year. Of course, we are very grateful to our pastor, the Rev. William De Salvo. He is always supportive of excellent liturgical music as being an integral part of the liturgy. Participation in the weekly liturgies will surely help the Christmas joy continue to linger in our hearts all year round.

Releasing certain financial details would be illegal To the Editor: During my years as a newspaper reporter, I used to love digging up public records. I learned early in my career that it is one thing to be told information but it is even better to sift through public documents when you want to know what is really going on in government. I never forgot the importance of that lesson when I moved into elective office. It is why that as a member of the Illinois General Assembly I was an early sponsor of our state’s first Freedom of Information laws. It is why as state treasurer and now as comptroller I have instructed my staff to promptly fulfill any records requests. And it is why I most recently launched the Ledger (ledger.illinoiscomptroller.com), an online financial database that takes state government transparency to a whole new level.

Share your thoughts Have something to say on this topic? Comment on this story online at shawurl. com/hvx.

The last day to register for the consolidated election is March 12. Registration can be done at Willowbrook Village Hall, 7760 Quincy St., from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Frank A. Trilla is now running unopposed for village president. Leroy R. Hansen is running for village clerk, while Terrence F. Kelly, Michael Mistele and Umberto S. Davi are running for three village trustee seats.

In recent weeks some have suggested that as comptroller, I should also produce a “state checkbook” that documents every dime taxed and spent by Illinois government. In fact, that information request to our office asked for a “complete data dump” of state financial records. But the state database tracking revenues and expenditures includes confidential information that the law prohibits from being given out — things like Social Security numbers and information about tax refunds, public aid and foster care payments, workers comp and unemployment checks. A “complete data dump” would be illegal. That is why last year I launched the Ledger, which makes public every state transaction that is allowable under the law. Specifically, the Ledger allows taxpayers to click their way through everything from the state’s daily receipts and bill backlog numbers to state agency budgets, contracts and expenses. The site also contains a state employee database, allowing taxpayers to view all public salaries and new hires. We haven’t stopped there. In the time since, the Ledger has been expanded to include state vendor payment totals, state officer compensation, and the members and pay for all state boards and commissions. And more enhancements are in the works, including additional line-by-line detail about state vendor payments and links to their corresponding contracts. I encourage all Illinois residents to check out the Ledger and let me know what other information would be helpful — if it’s legal, we’ll do it. Because after all this state has been through, it’s not enough for the taxpayers to “hear” from government; they rightly want to see the proof. As a former reporter, I appreciate that.

Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, Riverside

MUSICAL CLOSE-UP ‘Sunset Boulevard’ intersects screen’s ‘Les Miserables’ along Drury Lane

A

s vocal coach to Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman in “Les Miserables,” Roberta Duchak of Burr Ridge helped make movie musical history. An accomplished performer on Broadway and in national tours, she now provides musical direction to a stage show with its own historic lineage. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical reinvention of “Sunset Boulevard,” based on the 1950 film by Billy Wilder, just opened at Drury Lane Theatre. The tale of faded glory and unfulfilled ambition centers Duchak on silent movie star Norma Desmond, who longs for a return to her glamorous heyday on the big screen, before talkies squeezed her out. When Norma meets struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis, she hopes it’s a way back. Darien native Duchak reminisces about starting high school at Hinsdale South the year Pamn Baker joined the faculty as a theater director. “The Sound of Music” was Baker’s first show, and Duchak’s first lead as Maria. She says Baker will retire at the end of the school year. Looking back at her first movie project with “Les Miserables” and her musical direction on “Sunset Boulevard,” Duchak talks Hollywood today and yesterday.

You coached Crowe for two weeks to prepare for his ‘Les Miz’ audition? I worked with Russell Crowe in Chicago, while he was shooting ‘Superman.’ I went to the actual audition with him (for) the director. I was there when Tom Hooper said, ‘Let’s make the movie, mate.’ I thought (my) gig was over. Russell (later) called me personally, and asked if I would continue working with him. I was there for four months (in) England. What was he like on the movie set? He’s one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever met. He takes every challenge on like it’s an Olympic event. It was a pleasure working with such a perfect student. Hugh Jackman is the same way. Whatever they decide to do — whether it’s changing body type or changing diet or perfecting their singing or dancing, in Hugh’s case — (they) do everything it takes to be the best at it.

Did you know you were creating a hit? We all knew we were making history. A movie musical has never been sung completely live. It was exciting. Everyone who signed up to make this movie really wanted to be there. It was thrilling. You attended a premiere? I was at both premieres. (Russell) invited me to London and New York. On Christmas Day, my entire family, 19 of us, went to see the film — waiting for my name in the credits (as) vocal coach. Did you coach other actors? I was on set every day, in case anyone wanted to warm up. (I) warmed up Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks and Amanda Seyfried, as well. (During filming, it was) sung live with just a piano player in their ears. Sometimes, I was the pianist. The orchestrations were written and recorded after the film was edited. That’s a first. It’s usually done three months ahead of time. Everyone was pretty fearless in this project.

Is this your first ‘Sunset Boulevard?’ It’s all brand new to me. I’ve fallen in love with the score. It is almost all sung through or underscored. What’s great about the music — it (has) jazzy moments to reflect the 1950s Hollywood scene, (along with) traditional musical theater and grand operatic moments. It’s a treat for the ears. I think it’s one of the best stories ever put to music. It’s like a mystery novel with amazing singers and an orchestra. It’s so grand and lush and suspenseful all at the same time. — RENEE TOMELL

Hinsdale Central boys knock off OPRF to take over as conference frontrunners By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Never one to get ahead of himself, Nick Latorre is fully aware there is a lot of work to be done if his Hinsdale Central boys basketball team wants to stay atop the West Suburban Silver conference standings. But the Red Devils coach can’t help but be pleased with how his squad is playing. Hinsdale Central ran its winning streak to seven games with a pair of victories over the weekend, the most important a 53-45 decision against Oak ParkRiver Forest Saturday which put the Red Devils in sole possession of first place in the league. The team improved Game box to 13-5 on the season Hinsdale Central 53 and 7-1 in the WSS. Oak Park-River Forest 45 The Huskies lost for a Leading scorer: Brian second time in conferOwens 18 ence play and fell into Next game: 7:15 p.m. a second-place tie with Friday at Metea Valley York. “We executed well,” Latorre said. “We really did a great job on the defensive glass and did a good job taking care of the ball. Limiting our turnovers, that was the key.” It wasn’t long ago that the Red Devils were at a crossroads. A pair of heartbreaking last-second losses at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, coupled with two close defeats a few weeks earlier, left the team searching for ways to close out games. They got those answers in January. “We talked about it,” the coach said. “We had showed flashes of being real good but there we some small things that needed to be shored up. And the kids believed that too. Hopefully we don’t peak too early. “It’s been different guys scoring but the one constant has been our defense and rebounding.” On Friday, the Red Devils knocked off Downers Grove North 55-32 behind 16 points from Matt Rafferty and 14 from Alec Hutcherson. “I thought we played sound defense, and fortunately they had a couple open looks early that didn’t go in that could have changed the game,” Latorre said. “Hutch made some early shots and got us going.” Hinsdale Central will get a reprieve from conference play this week with a matchup Friday at Metea Valley. “They are really good,” Latorre said. “They are exactly what we’ve seen all year, really athletic, really quick, in-your-face defense. They run good stuff offensively, shoot the ball well and have a 6-10 kid in the middle. It’s a great non-conference matchup and they are in our sectional so the game has a lot of meaning.” The Red Devils continue the WSS portion of the schedule on Friday, Feb. 8 with a road game at Proviso West.

Romiti powers Hornets to Gold title By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

With the graduation of four starters from the 2011-12 season, the Hinsdale South girls basketball team’s odds of repeating as West Suburban Gold conference champs this winter appeared slim. Someone forgot to tell Toni Romiti and her teammates. Led by the fiery point guard, Hinsdale South clinched at least a share of the league championship with a 71-36 victory over Proviso East Tuesday. The Hornets, who ran their winning streak to seven games and improved to 14-7 overall, can claim the outright title with a win over Leyden tonight. “Honestly, it is a surprise,” said coach Jen Belmonte. “Not many people thought this team could get to where we are at right now. In the conference, I do think a lot of the teams were in a similar position as us (with the graduation of key players). We knew Willowbrook was the team to beat and last Thursday (a 52-46 win over Willowbrook Jan. 24) was huge. “It’s awesome. I don’t think anybody would have thought a couple of years ago that we could go back-to-back. It’s a great honor, not only for our team but for our school.”

Game box Hinsdale South 71 Proviso East 36 Leading scorers: Toni Romiti 19, Mackenzie Kern 14 Next game: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Leyden Romiti was downright on-fire during the month of January. She capped off a blistering four-week stretch with 30 points and seven three-pointers against Willowbrook, 32 points in a 67-53 win over Downers Grove South on Saturday and 19 against Proviso East. “We live and die by the Toni,” her coach said. “The main thing is Toni has been so focused and so unstoppable. She really is the ticket. I talked to college coaches all weekend and the thing I keep saying is she is in a zone. She really wants to do this for the team, for herself and for her future. She is putting the team on her back.” A four-year varsity player, Romiti is closing out her high school career with a bang. “Last year, she was surrounded by kids that also scored,” Belmonte said. “She didn’t get the ball as much. This year, she has said it’s my ball and my show.”

While the heroics of Romiti have grabbed the headlines, it has been far from a oneplayer act. Junior Mackenzie Kern, among others, has come up big as of late, scoring a combined 41 points over the three conference victories.

Wrestling HINSDALE CENTRAL, HINSDALE SOUTH The Red Devils will host a Class 3A individual regional starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Also competing will be West Suburban Silver conference foes Downers Grove North, Lyons Township and

Proviso West along with Reavis, Oak Lawn, Argo, Morton and Hinsdale South. Advancing individuals will head to the Shepard individual sectional while the winning team qualifies for the Hinsdale South dual team sectional. “The sectional at Shepard will easily be the toughest in the state,” said Hinsdale South coach Mike Matozzi, “so any wrestlers who make it to Champaign from there will have a great chance to medal. The regional at Hinsdale Central will be equally as difficult and several individuals with good records will wrestle their final match of the year at Central.” Hinsdale South finished the regular season with a dual meet record of 18-8, which included a 3-3 mark in the West Suburban Gold conference. Leading the way is junior Justin Maslow, who is 34-2 at 145 pounds. Junior Nick Perisin is 29-7 at 113 and freshman Joshua King is 26-5 at 220. Other contributors include senior Joel Lawrence (23-8 at 138), freshman Nic Burke (23-11 at 106) and sophomore Nick Carlson (15-7 at 120). “Carlson and Maslow each came one match away from being state qualifiers last year so hopefully, this will be their year,” Matozzi said.
