Festive events often trigger grief, sadness By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com

right away. It’s a new feeling within the territory of grief. Knowing how you’re going to feel gives you a sense of control during the holidays and helps people see that it’s normal.” Windsor said people are encouraged to do what they want to do and to talk about what is important. “Planning ahead for social situations – a Plan A and a Plan B,” Windsor said. “Plan A for events and a Plan B in case they wake up a half-hour before and just can’t do it. And have an exit strategy, a plan for leaving, if they are uncomfortable or just want to leave.” Grieving people should arrange with someone else to leave if they can’t stay, or drive themselves and then leave, she said. The late Bruce Conley created The Griever’s Holiday Bill of Rights, listing 10 points to aid in the process – including the right to say timeout, to have “bah humbug” days, to have some fun and not to forget about relationships with other loved ones. Laurel Fisher, a grief and bereavement counselor at Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva said Con-

ley’s points “are right on the money.” “One of the things we forget is that the holidays can sadden people who have had a loss,” Fisher said. “We forget it’s OK to laugh. Our loved ones would want us to have joy and laughter in our lives.” Fisher noted that the culture does not teach anything about dying or grief, so people tend to grow up without a roadmap of what to do or say in the event of a death. “When we experience a loss, sometimes we feel like ‘Am I a little crazy?’ because you’re experiencing feelings you never had before, and you do not know what to say,” Fisher said. “People will put space between you and themselves because they do not know what to say.” Because of that lack of cultural education on grief, sometimes the grieving person has to take the lead, Fisher said. “Most people can’t even

fathom the thought of losing a loved one, and they do not know what to say or do, so they back away,” Fisher said. “The greatest gift we can give each other as human beings is our presence. We don’t always have to have something to say. Letting that person talk or cry or watch a movie together – giving that person our presence is the greatest gift.” Fisher said the natural reaction to a person suffering grief is to want to fix it. “Grief is a situation where nobody can ‘fix’ it,” Fisher said. “We can just be there.” Tremaine is working on structuring herself for the holiday season, especially being distracted by grandchildren, as a hedge against grief. She and a friend are going to work on finishing a Christmas quilt and then have lunch. “I’m just going to take it step by step,” Tremaine said. “That is what I have to do.”

When Claudia Tremaine’s husband Joe died in 2009 of complications of diabetes, she said the loss was unimaginable. They had been married for 25 years. “There is a void in there, and you don’t know how to fill it,” said Tremaine, of Maple Park. “My problem is, I kind of do not want to do anything. I went out to the cemetery every day. I just could not put up a tree. I didn’t care. It was difficult, so hard to get a grip on things.” But with help from Conley Outreach Community Services, Tremaine, 71, is going to have that tree. “This year, I have to put up a tree,” Tremaine said. “Joe would be very unhappy with me if I didn’t put up a tree. I’m going to get a little artificial tree.” The holidays are not always happy, as seasonal events often trigger feelings of grief and sadness over the loss of a loved one, said Lora Windsor, a licensed clinical social worker who facilitates three grief groups for Conley in Elburn. Tremaine went to Conley’s grief support groups the first and second years following Joe’s death. “It seems to be getting better,” Tremaine said. “The most helpful was just sharing with other people who were there and actually going through the same thing.” Windsor said she stresses six key points in helping people get through their holidays. Among them is planning ahead to allow a person to expect to be sad and to give them permission to be happy, she said. “It’s bittersweet,” Windsor said. “They’re happy, and then it turns to sadness

Because myopia (nearsightedness) is much more common now than it was four decades ago, researchers have tried to find possible reasons. Among the most plausible findings came from an analysis of eight carefully selected studies on the association between time spent outdoors and myopia among children and adolescents. After analyzing the behavior and degree of nearsightedness among more than 10,400 youngsters, researchers concluded that the chance of being nearsighted fell by approximately two percent for each additional hour spent outdoors per week. Playing outdoors allows children to focus on distant objects rather than playing with iPads, watching TV, playing video games, and doing near work, which may also play a role in nearsightedness development. P.S. It is important for their academic and physical development to have children’s eyes tested regularly. Refractive errors are easily correctable.

D-303 OKs tax levy hike for 2013 million in the 2013 levy when last year, she said, it was about $2 million. “Is there a reason that increase is so significant?” she asked. “I really have not read about program changes for next year.” While the difference between this year’s and last year’s special education fund doesn’t mean the increase will be as much as $8 million, Board member Kathleen Hewell said she thinks there needs to be an increase in special education funding because the state isn’t paying as much as it used to. “We can see the students, multiple students, who are costing the district $100,000 a year,” she said. “I’m not defending it; I’m saying we’re stuck doing it.”

ST. CHARLES – The average St. Charles homeowner likely will see an increase of 2.5 percent or less in the school district portion of the property tax bill now that the District 303 School Board has approved its 2013 tax levy. The board approved the tax levy Dec. 9 for an aggregate tax levy o $161,253,257. Seth Chapman, the district’s chief financial officer, told the board the average homeowner likely would see about a 2.5 percent increase but did not have dollar figures available the evening of Dec. 9 to demonstrate how much extra a homeowner of a $200,000 or $300,000 home would pay.

The board also approved a debt service levy abatement for 2013 in the sum of $1.8 million. Chapman said the district’s debt service will drop by $16 million by 2017, when it will go from $22 million to $6 million. In the past two years, the district has abated $4.3 million. “We have expiring debt service in 2017 and the Board of Education is trying to be cognizant of that,” said Superintendent Don Schlomann. “For two years, we were able to lower that by $4.3 million. You’re abating that increase so it’s not nearly as much impact on taxpayers.” Patti Lopuszanksi, who spoke during public comment during the tax levy hearing, questioned why the special education fund was more than $10

Primrose Farm offers sleigh rides ST. CHARLES PARK DISTRICT

KAN • Thursday, December 12, 2013 • The Republican

Photo provided

Primrose Farm in St. Charles will offer holiday sleigh ride sessions this month and next month. show visitors what the farm looks like at night and in a different season,” said Kirk Bunke, Primrose Farm manager. “Doing these sleigh rides at Christmas just makes it that much more festive.” From farming’s earliest days to the early 20th century, horse-drawn sleighs were an essential part of working farm life, used to carry supplies rather than people. It was a rare treat to transform this utilitarian piece of equipment into a form of holiday entertainment, and families would bundle up under wool blankets as they took a well-deserved

break to enjoy their property from a strictly non-working viewpoint. This year, Primrose Farm will be offering holiday sleigh ride sessions from 6 to 7 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26; Friday, Dec. 27; Saturday, Dec. 28 and again after the new year on Friday, Jan. 3, and Saturday, Jan. 4. Children 14 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10 a person for residents and $15 for nonresidents. Primrose Farm is at 5N726 Crane Road. Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? Even if there is not much snow actually glistening in the lanes at Primrose Farm Park in St. Charles, holiday sleigh rides are a great, old-fashioned way to make the season bright. Like something out of a Christmas carol, Primrose Farm’s version of a holiday road trip is a step back in time. With its barn-red runners and bright green chassis, the farm’s vintage bobsled boasts a seasonal color scheme that will help guests get into the spirit of things as they take a nostalgic tour of the fields and trails at the historic 1930s-era farm. If the holiday weather doesn’t cooperate, the farm’s large-wheeled hay wagon can be pulled by a tractor. At the end of the about halfhour ride, guests are invited to lose the winter’s chill by stepping into the farm’s romantically lit summer kitchen, where they can warm up next to a roaring wood fire and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate while Christmas songs from the era play from an actual 1920s’ period working radio. “It’s always eye-opening to

Keep Wreath Red: Firefighters stress safety during holidays GENEVA REPUBLICAN genevarepublican@shawmedia.com The holidays are a time for family, food and fun, but local firefighters urge residents to put fire safety at the top of that list. Each year, local fire departments place a wreath decorated in red lights on the front of their fire stations. The wreaths remain lighted 24 hours during the holiday season, according to a news release. Whenever a fire occurs that is a result of holi-

day decorations, a white bulb replaces a red bulb on the wreath. The Keep the Wreath Red campaign serves as a reminder to make safety a priority when installing and displaying holiday decorations. Tips on how residents can keep their homes safe for the holidays include inspecting holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. • Strings of lights should be connected to an exten-

sion cord before being plugged into an outlet. • Residents should consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like the real thing, but without the fire hazard. • If using regular candles, residents should be sure they are in stable holders and out of reach of children and pets. • If residents have questions or concerns regarding fire safety this holiday season, they should call their local fire department.

helping schools improve,” Illinois State Board of Education spokesperson Mary Fergus said. “For too long, we’ve seen teachers rated as exemplary without any constructive feedback. Teachers, like any other professional, need a holistic evaluation and support that will guide them toward improvement.” The act was written with teachers, administrators, union representatives and other people at the table, Fergus said. But Rae Ann McNeilly, executive director of the Chicago-based Taxpayers United of America and a North Aurora resident, had some concerns about PERA. “It sounds like it is good,” McNeilly said. “What wouldn’t be good about a pay-for-performance environment? But the problem is that the unions are involved in selecting or establishing the criteria that is used in the performance evaluation.” Under the law, district ad-

ministrators must work with teachers’ union representatives to develop evaluation systems that incorporates student growth. McNeilly said that creates a conflict of interest. “That’s just not the role of the union,” McNeilly said. “The union has no interest in the students or student outcomes. Their sole interest lies in helping teachers keep their jobs, whether they deserve to or not and helping them get high pay, so that they can then get high pensions. The unions have a vested interest in pulling in more money for these performance evaluations.” Malay disagreed. “We do have an interest in our profession in maintaining high standards, just like doctors and lawyers and accountants,” Malay said. “Who better to evaluate teachers than the educational professionals we are? Tell me people that would be more qualified than the people who

work with children on a daily basis.” McNeilly also was upset that performance evaluations of teachers, principals and superintendents are exempt from Freedom of Information requests. “You have a right to know if your child’s teacher or principal have poor performance evaluations,” McNeilly said. “That’s all part of the picture.” St. Charles School Superintendent Donald Schlomann said he is concerned that PERA is taking away local control. “PERA was really negotiated at the state level, not at the local level,” Schlomann said. “It feels a great deal that you are starting to lose local control. Everybody has got to be the same. Whether you are teaching in an inner-city school in Chicago or if you are teaching in St. Charles, you’ve got the same expectations and same goals that you’ve got to meet.”

In receiving a three-year contract to head Batavia School District 101, new Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens’ contract is linked to student performance and academic performance within the district. Illinois School Code requires that mutiyear administrator contracts be linked to student performance and academic performance within a district. Hichens took over as superintendent in July after the retirement of former school superintendent Jack Barshinger. Hichens said she believes the law “in general is a good idea.” “But we have to be careful on placing too much emphasis on test scores,” she said. “We have to make sure the information is used for the good of students.” Batavia Education Association President Tony Ma-

lay agreed. “Our belief is that students are more than a test score,” Malay said. “Test scores don’t accurately reflect what they are learning. We don’t create thinkers, we create test takers.” School districts soon will have to deal with more rules in regard to student performance. In 2010, Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act, which requires all schools in Illinois to change how teachers’ and principals’ performance is measured. Districts already are dealing with one part of the law. Starting in September 2012, all principals had to be evaluated every year by trained and pre-qualified evaluators. And starting Sept. 1, 2016, all Illinois school districts – including those in Kane County – must begin using new teacher evaluation systems that incorporate student growth measures. “It’s just another tool for

Owner brings Spanish roots to St. Charles restaurant By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – John Borras was raised in Venezuela, but his parents tuned his palate to Spanish cuisine because that was their heritage. Borras opened Macarena Tapas in St. Charles last month, a sit-down restaurant that offers a menu of Spanish dishes, and according to the menu, some were inspired by his mother and grandmother. “My dad and mom brought me up eating really good food,” he said. “My parents never took me to a fast food restaurant in their life.” Borras is part owner of a Macarena Tapas in Naperville, which opened in 2007. He owns the new St. Charles location and runs it with the help of his operations manager, Alex Ayala. Borras’ parents moved from Spain to Venezuela in the 1960s, and they brought their Spanish recipes with them, which have inspired the restaurant’s menu. Many of the dishes at Macarena Tapas are meant to be shared, although there are some entrees available. He emphasized that Spanish food is much different than Mexican food and said the two shouldn’t be confused. “Not too many people know about Spain. In 1905 or 1908, they were a big Spanish army empire. It also is a big mecca for food,” he said. “A lot of Chicago chefs are from that background. We have a lot to offer.” Borras, the owner and chef, offers the “ensalade de espinacas como le gusta a mi madre,” one of the classic cold tapas on the menu. Translated to English, it means, “spinach salad just the way my mom likes it.” The spinach salad is served with pear, avocado, peaches, dried cranberries, walnuts and bleu cheese

Another one of the more popular cold tapas dishes on the menu includes the tortilla de patatas “just like my grandmother made it.” The dish is a Spanish potato and onion omelet. serves up beef tenderloin medallions over toasted bread with sun-dried tomato, topped with piquillo pepper and manchego cheese. Another hot tapas dish on the menu includes a pork belly crusted with sweet mixed nuts. Borras said he put a lot of thought into the name of the restaurant, Macarena Tapas, which was inspired by the song, “Macarena.” He said the artists, Los del Rio, composed the song while in Venezuela. “The song came from the same area I’m from,” Borras said. Borras has a degree from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago and a degree from Le Cordon Blue College of Culinary Arts in Chicago. He also completed cooking training in Italy and Spain.

Book aims to change behavior after holidays By DOUG OLESON doleson@shawsuburban.com Wherever they went, Geneva resident Karen Tomko and her neighbor Laurie Heine kept hearing the same thing. “We’d hear moms commiserating about how the holidays are so great because you can hold that over their kids’ heads to keep them good,” Tomko said. “Then, the day after Christmas, [everything] breaks loose. We really felt there was some need to help parents with their kids after the holidays.” What the women did was write a children’s book, “Rodney the Repo Reindeer, a Cautionary Tale to be Shared After Christmas.” “There are a ton of books out there for Christmas, but not for one after that,” Tomko said with a laugh. “Dec. 26 is tough.” Essentially, the book is about a brother and a sister who wake up one morning to find all their toys gone. They are experiencing shock and awe until their mother explains that the toys were taken away because of their bad behavior. She then shows them a package that came for them, containing a magical jar of snow with Rodney the Repo Reindeer who explains how they can get their toys back – by being good. Tomko said it took about a year and a half to write the book, which was the first for both women. “It was a blast,” she said. Even more enjoyable, she said, was seeing the book illustrated. Once the manuscript was accepted, an illustrator was assigned to the project

If you go Co-authors Karen Tomko and Laurie Heine, both of Geneva, will have a book signing for “Rodney the Repo Reindeer, a Cautionary Tale to be Shared After Christmas” from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the DeKalb Barnes and Noble, 2439 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

who communicated with them by phone and other means. “It was kind of fun watching him come to life,” Tomko said, adding that the women never met the illustrator face to face. Along with the book comes a poster of Rodney, which can be hung up in a child’s room. It’s red on one side as a reminder to kids that something is going to be repossessed if they don’t behave. It’s green on the other to show they’ll get the toys back if they’re good. The 20-page book, which is aimed for children ages 3 through 10, costs $9.99. It was published last year. “We would love to write a prequel,” Tomko said. “A lot of people would love to know where Rodney came from.” Maybe if adults are good, they’ll do just that.

Food and wine for good cause MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rusty Prudhon took a commitment to local ingredients to a new stratosphere. For the second straight year, the managing partner at the Napa Cafe engineered the Heart Full of Soul, an epic soul music spectacle and winemaker dinner at his east Memphis restaurant to benefit the Stax Music Academy. While fresh, local ingredients are the impetus behind recent culinary trends, Prudhon furthered the approach with the finest student musicians in the area. A spectacular five-course meal was seamlessly intertwined with a plethora of talented, teen musicians and wines from Sleight of Hand, crafted by Washington winemaker Trey Busch, who was in attendance for the recent gala event.

Winemaker spotlight Song after song played. Soul music. The soul classics filled the air of Prudhon’s office as he searched for a moment of inspiration. The Stax Museum of American Soul pays homage to the finest singers and songwriters of all time. Otis Redding, The Staple Singers and Isaac Hayes are just a few of many immortalized by the museum, and Prudhon has come to know their songs well. Their songs and the opportunity to further the aspiring careers of tomorrow’s musicians through the Stax Music Academy drive Prudhon. “It all starts with the mu-

sic,” Prudhon said. “I listen to as much music from Stax as possible. I look for songs that would be a good fit with the food ... if there’s a theme in the music that we can pair with a dish. It’s the opportunity to look for anything that will strike a creative spark.” The Soulsville students relished the chance to perform. With soaring voices that filled the restaurant, slick instrumental interpretation and expertly flowing dance moves, I marveled that they were just high school students rather than seasoned professionals. A song precluded each course and the students matched the show-stopping quality of the food and wine. They danced in the aisles with the patrons – myself included – and showed that their future is limitless. “We want it to be a multi-sensory event,” Prudhon said. “It’s a challenge to pull all the logistics together because there is so much to focus on – the music, food and wine. Our goal is to create an event where everything works well together and people are entertained.”

What to buy Sleight of Hand Cellars, “The Magician,” Evergreen Vineyard, Riesling, Columbia Valley 2011 – this wine was perfectly paired with steamed

mussels, “ambrosia” broth and an apple and fennel salad. Crisp green apples and a pleasant mouthful are “The Magician’s” highlights. The acidity helps balance the residual sugar. It was a great way to start the meal. Sleight of Hand Cellars, “The Illusionist,” Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2012 – The nose of this wine is pure cabernet. It has notes of dark fruit, cassis and cigar wrapper. I kept revisiting the nose because it was eloquent, complex and a beautiful prelude to an incredibly well-balanced wine where fruit, oak, tannins and acidity are all in ideal harmony. A stellar cabernet interpretation.

Wine 101 Last year, the Heart of Soul dinner and silent auction raised $13,084 for the Stax Music Academy. This year, a portion of the proceeds from the Heart of Soul Syrah and Chardonnay, which will serve as the house wine at the Napa Cafe and be sold by four local wine stores, should up the donation. “Both nights were a huge success,” Prudhon said. “They were everything we wanted them to be. This was our second year, and our goal is to get a little bit bigger every year.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Charles East senior Shea Hoyt figured to encounter pool pressure simply by growing up in a swimming-saturated environment. That she credits her family’s move to St. Charles for jolting her career suggests something about her parents’ largely casual approach, and something more about what Hoyt feels inside each time she prepares to dive into her lane. Yes, Hoyt is the daughter of two former collegiate swimmers – one a former Olympian – and the sister of another one-time collegian. Still, she says she derived equal motivation from her teammates after the Hoyts relocated from Atlanta in late 2011, eventually turning that momentum into a nod as Kane County Chronicle Girls Swimmer of the Year. The Kane County Chronicle is a sister newspaper to The Republicans. “Last year, I was definitely overwhelmed because it was my first year swimming high school in Illinois,” Hoyt said. “There was definitely an overwhelming experience. But this year, I felt like I knew what I needed to do. I was more comfortable this year.” Hoyt earned the Chronicle area’s top individual finish at last month’s IHSA state meet at New Trier, placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03:07. She also was part of East’s fifth-place 200 medley relay and 12th-place 200 freestyle relay. Classmate and fellow Iowa recruit Izzie Bindseil joined Hoyt in the 200 freestyle relay. The duo played a big role in the Saints’ Upstate Eight Conference and sectional championships, as well as an eighth-place team finish at state, the program’s first top-10 showing since 2010. “Just great spirits,” East coach Joe Cabel said. “They enjoy swimming and they enjoy the team. Just absolutely have not been any kind of problem whatsoever. They’re two great kids.” Hoyt made friends at South Forsyth High in the Atlanta suburb of Cumming, Ga., but soon had to leave them after her father, Rick, transferred positions at Pepperidge Farm midway though Hoyt’s sophomore year.

She competed for just one high school season at South Forsyth – prep boys and girls both swim during the winter in Georgia – but joined the St. Charles Swim Team club program shortly upon her arrival in Illinois. That’s where she met Bindseil and many of her current friends while embracing SCST’s enjoyably competitive culture. “It was awesome that I could go to school and swim with my best friends,” Hoyt said. “It’s just a really great group of girls.” Added Bindseil: “We’re all pretty laid back. None of us are too crazy or tense, and I think that’s what helped our team.” Hoyt endeared herself to the Saints as a junior, finishing seventh in state in the 100 breaststroke. Her swim of 1:03.92 was the fifth-fastest in the event, although she was racing in the consolation final. Hoyt’s mother – the former Mary Lubawski when she represented Canada in the 1984 Olympics – competed in the 200 breaststroke in the Games. Years later, she met her husband when both were athletes at Georgia. Hoyt since has surpassed her mom’s top time in the 200 breastroke, swimming in the 2:34s, about one second faster. “Shea’s a hard worker. She knows that hard work pays off,” Mary Hoyt said. “I always told her that. Every meet you go to needs to count. It’s for a team and it’s not just going to happen overnight.” Hoyt’s older sister, Shelby, won a Georgia state title in the 500 freestyle in 2011 and was runner-up in the 200 freestyle. She committed to North Carolina State but no longer competes there. These days, about the only time off Shea Hoyt allows herself is a week between the end of the IHSA season and the beginning of her club workouts. The family headed to Georgia for Thanksgiving. “It was good to just rest and take it all in, kind of relax a little bit,” Hoyt said. “That’s always nice.” Too much rest can lead to complacency, however, something Hoyt doesn’t see herself fighting. Whether at the Norris Center or at home, it runs in the family.

Bedtime routine To help eliminate bedtime frustrations, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends parents stick to a bedtime routine to positively influence their child’s sleep habits. A consistent routine — brushing teeth, changing into pajamas and reading a book — helps children go from alert to a quieter state, giving them the ability to fall asleep better.

Prunes for bones In the U.S., nearly half of all women older than 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture. Recent bone health research goes beyond the typical calcium-containing foods to examine the positive link between eating fruits and vegetables and bone health, and research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found that prunes may help keep bones strong by preventing bone mineral loss, which can lead to osteoporosis.

By Michelle Andrews Kaiser Health News

It’s annual enrollment time, the autumn period when many people with job-based health insurance ante up for another year. Although news reports have fixated on the problems with the online health marketplaces that launched Oct. 1, for the vast majority of people that’s a nonissue. If they get insurance through a job at a company that has at least 50 employees, they probably won’t be using the marketplaces, also called exchanges. That doesn’t mean people with employer-based plans are unaffected by the health law. As employers adjust plans to meet new requirements and try to reduce their costs, people can expect to see changes next year.

Moderate increases Overall, premium increases will be moderate in 2014, averaging 5.2 percent, according to a 2013 employer survey about planned health care changes by the human resources consultant Towers Watson. Last year, the increase was projected to be 5.9 percent in 2013. But employers may raise rates disproportionately for spouses and dependents, the survey found. The health law requires plans to cover dependent children up to age 26, and most plans cover spouses too. But employers continue to try to minimize those costs by making it financially less attractive to employees to cover their family members. They may charge separately for each child on a plan, for example, or add a surcharge for covering a spouse who is also offered insurance through his or her own job. Some, such as UPS,have moved to cut off coverage entirely to spouses that have access to insurance through their own jobs.

Premium increases In the Towers Watson survey, 34 percent of employers said they planned to increase the employee share of the premium for spouse and dependent coverage by 5 percentage points or more in 2014. Last year, 21 percent planned such big increases. In contrast, 22 percent of employers said they would increase the worker’s share for employee-only coverage by 5 percentage points or more. “Everyone wants to make sure they’re not picking up the cost of covering other dependents,” says Julie Stone, a senior consultant at Towers Watson. Another change deals with the so-called Cadillac plans — those that cost more than $10,200 for an individual or $27,500 for a family. In 2018, these policies will incur an excise tax of 40 percent on the amount that pre-

miums exceed those totals. Stone says 60 percent of employers surveyed expect to trigger the tax if they don’t adjust their plans, and some are beginning to make incremental changes in 2014 to ratchet back on generous coverage.

Higher deductibles For employees, that will generally mean higher deductibles and copayments or coinsurance, not to mention a continued shift to account-based plans — high deductible plans paired with a health savings account or health reimbursement arrangement from the employer that the worker can use to cover out-ofpocket costs. More than half of employers offer such plans in 2013, according to Aon Hewitt’s annual employer survey, and another 30 percent are considering doing so in the next five years. A growing

number of employers are offering these plans as the only option, say experts. To encourage employees to select them, “the high-deductible plan is often subsidized to a greater degree than other types of plan,” says Craig Rosenberg, Aon Hewitt’s practice leader for health and welfare benefits administration.

Wellness programs Employees should also expect to see a continued emphasis on wellness and health management activities, including financial incentives for completing health risk assessments, keeping blood pressure, cholesterol and weight within recommended ranges, and working with health coaches to manage chronic conditions. Increasingly, employers are incorporating the financial rewards into the premium itself

rather than giving employees a cash payment for completing a health risk questionnaire, for example, says Chris Renz, a partner at human resources consultant Mercer. “It puts a lot more dollars at stake,” says Renz. “Instead of a one-time $100 reward you might see an annual $500 difference in premiums.” Workers who don’t like what their employer is offering can shop for coverage on the state exchanges. But they won’t be eligible for subsidies to bring down the cost unless their employer plan is considered unaffordable or inadequate under the health law. A plan is deemed unaffordable if employee-only coverage costs more than 9.5 percent of household income, and inadequate if it pays less than 60 percent on average of allowed medical expenses.
