year. “We have started to extend our reach to young people in a really big way by developing this educational outreach program,” Pirtle said of the yearlong initiative. “ ... The Fox Valley area is a bit under-served for chamber music, so we are there in a capacity that nobody else is providing.” Oswalt said he felt Pirtle’s observation about the lack of accessibility to chamber music in the Fox Valley area was spot on. He said students have some opportunities to experience that type of music, but they aren’t as prevalent as they once were. “If you ask my kids, ‘do you

listen to chamber music outside of class?’ Most are going to say no,” he said. “This has been a jump-start to reinitiate kids into that, and I think the best way to learn is to do it in small groups. ... To have a professional step out and say it’s important, it’s going to make a difference in a young musician’s life.” Pirtle explained that chamber music consists of a small group of musicians who generally play without a conductor. She said students who study chamber music learn the skill of working together as a group without someone telling them every note they’re playing. Chamber music students also develop skills that are forma-

tive in artistic development, in general, she added. “Chamber music is wonderful because you’re responsible for your own part and you have to learn your own part really well,” she said. In addition to working with students about once a month, the group also offers free tickets for students to any of The Orion Ensemble’s shows. The year may culminate with joint concerts between students and The Orion Ensemble this spring, but that’s still tentative. She said The Orion Ensemble plays varying styles of music, including jazz, contemporary, ballet, pieces with narration and even funk.

Pianist Diana Schmück of The Orion Ensemble works with members of St. Charles East High School chamber orchestra string quartet, including Monika Stoskute and Will Kennedy. The Orion Ensemble has partnered with the school as part of “Janet’s Stage.”

“There’s just as much variety in chamber music as there is in any other kind of music,” she said. “You can cross all boundaries of style.” At Geneva High School, orchestra director Julie Lawrence said all of her students are involved in chamber music, whether it’s a quintet or a quartet. After seeing The Orion Ensemble in concert, Lawrence said she was amazed with the quality of the group’s music. “My kids don’t even realize what they’re working with here and what these women have done,” she said. “They are superb performers. This is a big deal.” Janet’s Stage works with schools free of charge thanks to the $22,000 donated toward the initiative, Pirtle said. She said she hopes to raise enough money by the end of this year to continue the program next year. “We’re hoping the community will reach out and support this,” she said. “The community has embraced us, but we would love for more people in the community to hear what we’re doing and to know the difference we’re making in the tapestry of the Fox Valley, and that we’re giving students a unique experience.”

When a member of The Orion Ensemble approached St. Charles East High School orchestra director Ben Oswalt about having his students participate in a pilot music program, he said he couldn’t turn down the opportunity. Oswalt’s sophomore, junior and senior music students have been participating in the pilot program dubbed “Janet’s Stage” since the beginning of the school year. Through the program, members of The Orion Ensemble – what clarinetist and ensemble executive director Kathryn Pirtle said is one of the top chamber music groups in the country – works with high school students at St. Charles East, Batavia High School and Geneva High School. Although still in its early phases, Oswalt said Janet’s Stage so far has been well received. “I think any local director will tell you that when you have opportunities to collaborate with a very high-level musical group or any professional group, that can always be a real plus for students,” Oswalt said. “[The Orion Ensemble] obviously wants to share their love of chamber music.” Pirtle said members of The Orion Ensemble, which – in addition to Pirtle – is made up of violinist Florentina Ramniceanu, pianist Diana Schmück and cellist Judy Ston, decided to create Janet’s Stage because they felt chamber music wasn’t very accessible to younger musicians in the Fox Valley area. The collaboration is named after former ensemble board chair Janet Safanda, who died last

Pastor presents sermon on ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’ CORNEAL STAINING While the corneal surface regenerates like skin, sometimes too many cells are shed, providing an opportunity for bacteria and other microorganisms to enter the eye. Anything that causes friction on the surface of the eye, from blinking to wearing contact lenses, can cause mild abrasions on the corneal surface called “corneal staining,” which is what is visible when fluorescein dye and a black light are used to examine the cornea. While corneal staining happens to everyone from time to time, those who wear soft contacts may be particularly susceptible if they do not regularly clean and replace their lenses. Perhaps the most common is 3/9 staining (corneal staining in the peripheral cornea at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions). P.S. Artificial tears are often used to clear up corneal staining caused by dry eye syndrome.

Police give back By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As he shopped Dec. 14 alongside several St. Charles police officers, Logan Gagnepain, 12, said he planned to at least browse the video game aisle at Super Target in St. Charles during the department’s first Shop with a Cop event. “This is my first Shop with a Cop, and I’ve got to say this is very generous of them,” he said. Members of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 27 – the St. Charles Police Department’s union – partnered with Super Target to shop for toys with six children whose families are being assisted by Lazarus House in St. Charles. Seventeen police officers showed up Dec. 14 to go shopping, and only three children were able to make it. Detective Jerry Schomer, union president, said an illness and possibly the weather kept a few families at home, but officers still planned to give them gift certificates and a stocking filled with gifts. Schomer said the union donated $500 toward the shopping spree while Target donated $200 and offered to give a 20 percent discount on all items purchased. Officer Bridget McCowan, who helped organize the department’s first Shop with a Cop, said she hoped make it an annual event that grows each year. She said Super Target was especially generous in helping coordinate the event because it was put together somewhat

at the last minute. Store manager Evan Lenchner said in addition to the discount and $200, the store also donated wrapping paper and food from the store’s cafe. Target volunteers also were on hand to assist with shopping. “We want this to happen every year,” he said. “Next year, we hope to give $500 to $1,000.” St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin said he had done a Shop with a Cop event while working in Elgin and wanted to bring it St. Charles. “This is probably one of the nicest things these guys can do. I’m really proud of them,” he said. “I did this when I was younger and never forgot it.” The three children who were able to make it to Super Target on Dec. 14 picked up a variety of gifts – including some to give to their family members. Hannah Gagnepain, 11, picked up a present for her mom, along with a new basketball, a Nintendo DS game and a popcorn maker. Johnathan Mosley, 11, got the top gift on his list – a new Xbox gaming system. McCowan said she contacted Super Target about a month ago and wasn’t sure what to expect for the first event. “For their employees to come out and pull this off was more than I expected. [The officers’] support of this is priceless,” she said. “Next year, we’re going to be doing fundraising for this and working to find avenues to fundraise so we can help more children next year.”

Public can give their best at Winter Olympics ST. CHARLES PARK DISTRICT No money for a trip to Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi? No problem. You can get your Olympic game on right here in St. Charles through a month-long celebration of winter sports that will have you dashing through the snow with the best of them. The St. Charles Park District’s tribute to the international competition is at 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. With games such as a snowshoe relay, snowball shot put and sled pull, these family-based events are a test of one’s wintertime fitness. “Our motto is, ‘If you had fun, you won,’” said Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. Nor is the competition strictly testing human feats of strength. Nature center staff will be on hand to conduct hikes through the natural areas to demonstrate how plants and animals survive the season by competing for food – both above and below the snowpack.

Competition of another sort takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, when the Davis ice rink becomes the venue for a rousing game of oldfashioned broomball. A combination of floor hockey and ice hockey, with an element of curling thrown in for good measure, this winter game originated in Canada but is quickly gaining fans on this side of the border. Players wear street shoes and use a regular household broom (bring your own) to move the ball down court. Park district staff will give an overview of the rules and instruction in the basic skills for this fun team-based sport. And what would the

bschory@shawmedia.com In a cost-cutting consolidation move, 37 of the TCF Bank branches located in Chicago-area and Northwest Indiana Jewel-Osco stores will be closed by the end of March, TCF National Bank announced Dec. 11. The consolidation will affect five Kane County locations: 119 Randall Road, Batavia; 652 Kirk Road, St. Charles; 465 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove; 800 N. Main St., Elburn; and 375 Randall Road, South Elgin. TCF Bank spokesman Mark Goldman said there was no “average” number of employees per branch bank, but that the consolidation will affect approximately 200 employees. “It is our focus and intent to retain as many as possible

at TCF,” Goldman said. “We are working with them and encouraging them to apply for other positions.” TCF is based in Wayzata, Minn., and is closing its downtown Minneapolis branch as well, the company announced in a statement. TCF has partnered with Jewel-Osco stores for the past 16 years, officials said. TCF will remain the primary banking partner for Jewel, as it will be keeping 118 of its branch locations, Goldman said. In all, the bank currently has 199 branch locations in Illinois and Indiana. “We have one of the largest bank footprints of any bank in the Chicago area,” Goldman said. The decision to consolidate the branches was based on a comprehensive review of the TCF branch network to see

solidated and resources could be deployed in other products and services, Goldman said. TCF added 52 ATMs at bus platforms in Chicago, he said. “Another factor is the nature of how our customers bank is evolving,” Goldman said. “As more have the capability to do online and mobile banking through smartphone banking, the amount of foot traffic has decreased.” TCF now offers mobile and Android applications for customers to use, so they see less need to go into a branch to do banking, he said. A spokeswoman for Jewel did not return a voicemail message or an email requesting comment on the closures and whether the grocery company plans to have another bank step in after TCF leaves.

Batavia native uses childhood as inspiration for book By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Film and television screenwriter Kevin Jakubowski said his new novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” is “a love letter to Batavia in many ways.” Jakubowski’s hometown of Batavia serves as the backdrop of his first book, which he describes as a comedic look at “kid pop culture” in the 1980s. The story follows 9-year-old Jake Doyle who desperately wishes to get a new Nintendo Entertainment System for Kevin Christmas. Jakubowski Only one kid in Batavia – the rich kid – has a Nintendo system and won’t let anyone else play it. A “comedically tragic” accident involving a Nintendo system causes an uproar in Batavia, and parents are set on banning the gaming system from the city. So Doyle and his buddies set out to try to get their hands on a Nintendo system despite the obstacles. “It’s sort of in the vein of the TV show ‘The Wonder Years,’ or the movies ‘A Christmas Story,’ ‘The Sandlot’ and ‘Stand By Me,’ – movies that are narrated by an older narrator looking back on his childhood,” he said. “It’s definitely inspired by my own childhood growing up in Batavia.” Jakubowski said he considered changing the name of the town and setting the novel somewhere in the Chicago area, but decided against it. “There was really no reason to,” he said. “I definitely poke fun at the town, but I feel like it’s my town. I feel like I’m almost poking fun at myself. ... It’s all lighthearted fun.” Jakubowski is now working as a film and television screenwriter and lives in Santa Monica, Calif. He said this year, he has done most of his writing for Comedy Central’s “Brickleberry,” which is produced by comedian Daniel Tosh. Jakubowski said he is also writing for shows on Nickelodeon that are now in the pilot stage.

If you go Kevin Jakubowski recently published his first novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” which takes place in his hometown of Batavia. Jakubowski will be signing books and giving a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. Registration is required and can be completed by calling 630-879-1393, ext. 500. He also will sign books from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 21, at Limestone Coffee and Tea, 8 W. Wilson St., Batavia; and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at The Paper Merchant, 320 S. Third St., Geneva. He also co-wrote the comedy film “Assassination of a High School President,” starring Bruce Willis and Mischa Barton. Jakubowski said he wanted to write “8-Bit Christmas” as a book, but hopes to turn it into a film. “It was really fun for me to kind of flex a different creative muscle,” he said. “It was fun to find my voice in something that didn’t have to be as structured as a screen play.” He said his own experiences growing up in the 1980s also inspired the novel, which hit shelves on Nov. 1. Kids went to great lengths to get their hands on a Nintendo Entertainment System because “before then, there wasn’t anything as cool as that,” he said. He noted one of his friends, who had never had a Nintendo Entertainment System as a child, purchased one when he turned 18 – long after more modern gaming consoles had been out. “That’s the length people went to,” Jakubowski said. “People have such a reverence for Nintendo. It seemed to strike a chord.”

Batavia native Kevin Jakubowski recently wrote the book “8-bit Christmas,” which is set in Batavia.

Schmidt to bring laughs to Zanies in St. Charles By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Less than three years after graduating from Bolingbrook High School in 1983, Lenny Schmidt was appearing at the highly respected The Comedy Store in Hollywood, Calif. Along with doing stand-up comedy, Schmidt has appeared in such movies as “Joe Dirt” and “The Ugly Truth” and in television shows like “Bones,” “True Blood” and “Big Love.” Schmidt, who now lives in Los Angeles, will be back in the area when he appears at Zanies at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, through Saturday, Dec. 28. More information is available by visiting www.stcharles. zanies.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Schmidt about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: It seems like the Zanies club in St. Charles is a regular spot for you. Lenny Schmidt: Yeah, I’ve been playing it for years. I taped my third CD there, actually. It’s a great room. I love

that room, actually.

ES: What do you like about it? LS: I’m from the area, so I get a ton of people that come up from Bolingbrook to see the shows. And for a big room, you don’t lose the crowds. It feels like a small room. I tend to go in the audience a lot and whip up the crowd, and it’s easier to do with an intimate crowd because they are all into it and listening. I’m still just a blue collar guy from the Chicago area. Not a whole lot has changed for me, personality-wise. So, basically it’s just a roomful of people like me. It feels like I am at home.

ES: What should people expect from the show? LS: My whole act always revolves around real life and real-life situations, and what I’m going through. And what I talk about now is being a single dad, and that my kids are 2,000 miles away. I go back home to see them as much as I can. And that’s my life now.

ES: It seems like that would be material that a lot of people could relate to. LS: Yeah, I think so. I got divorced a couple of years ago, and then you realize how many friends you have that are divorced or getting a divorce. I’ve always followed the stages of my life. I talked about

dating when I was single, and being married when I was married. A lot of times, it’s not the life you want, it’s the life you live. You find a way to adjust to the curves that you’re thrown in life, and go on. And that’s kind of what I talk about on stage.

pitched out here; all the big shows are auditioning out here; everything starts out here. Chicago is way better for development and for live performance than Los Angeles.

ES: You graduated from Bolingbrook High School in 1983, and less than three years later, you were performing at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. That’s pretty impressive. LS: Yeah, I moved to L.A.

es are Richard Pryor and Sam Kinison, because they got me into it. But two of the guys I watch now and really appreciate are Bill Burr and Louis C.K. They are two brilliant comics. They talk about not just the good stuff in life. That’s the thing that I think I learned from Pryor more than anything. Any guy that can bring pain on stage in life and make it funny, that’s huge.

almost right out of high school.

ES: Did you move to L.A. just because you thought it would be better for your career? LS: Yeah, that’s exactly why

ES: Who are some of your comedy influences? LS: My two biggest influenc-

I moved here.

ES: How do you think the two scenes compare, L.A. and Chicago? LS: Well, there’s a lot more work in L.A., as far as acting goes. There’s probably more work club-wise or stand-upwise in Chicago, but there’s also way more opportunity and exposure out here in L.A. All the shows are being

ES: What kind of advice would you give someone trying to break into comedy or acting? LS: If you are going to be a stand-up comedian, the best thing to do is just get on stage and start doing it. It takes you a while to figure out what you want to say, and how you are going to say it. As far as acting goes, you have to study. You have to take an acting class.

ST. CHARLES – Crashing pins, clanging ball returns and flashy arcade sound effects all conspire to make noise an essential bowling backdrop. At some houses, even extravagant carpeting seems to scream during the walk from the shoe rental station to the assigned lane. St. Charles North boys bowlers don’t doubt things can get loud at St. Charles Bowl or elsewhere, but they also aren’t ones to raise their voices through the din. Senior leadership, as defined by Isaac Marshall, happens subtly. Players-only meetings near the snack bar need not apply. “To me, it’s just about getting the whole team together and making sure nobody is being upset, trying to get them excited to be here,” Marshall said. “Maybe giving some advice on their shot and making sure that they’re listening and just following directions from coach.” In the handful of years since North, St. Charles East and Geneva made like their brethren to the bowling-loving west and added the sport to the extracurricular state, the North Stars boys have earned their share of accomplishments. Marshall rolled a perfect 300 game at Rockford’s Don Marshall Lanes at a tournament in January. In 2011-12, the North Stars advanced to the second day of the 24-team state tournament behind a senior-heavy group. After stumbling during the state series last season as a young team trying to find its way, North enters the winter with a quiet confidence. Marshall and fouryear teammate Bailey Sebas-

St. Charles North bowler Nate Ioriatti warms up Dec. 11 before the North Stars’ meet against Oswego at St. Charles Bowl. tian are the elder statesmen of a core group that includes Zac Cook, Nate Ioriatti, Alex Kummet, Steven Leitner, Alex Mundt and Nate Slinker. Like most teenagers, the North Stars veer off task from time to time, but don’t usually stray for long. Marshall and Ioriatti, Marshall’s assistant captain, need only point to a season-opening sweep of Bartlett to get North revved up again. “A lot of the guys on the

team, pretty much everybody knows what they’re doing for the most part,” said Ioriatti, a junior. “So the main goal is to just make sure that everybody’s focused and in the zone and we’re bowling as best as we can, because everybody here’s got the potential to bowl 280.” Short of tacking a flourescent-colored ad to the St. Charles Bowl bulletin board, coach Jeff Fett still wouldn’t mind a bigger rah-rah guy

on his side. Fett said it’s “really obvious” among bowler interactions when things are going well, but added the North Stars “tend to shut down a little bit” during adversity. Maybe that’s by design. “It’s not like we’ve got one standout guy and then four that are holding that one guy back,” Ioriatti said. “Everybody’s at the same level, so that keeps a really nice, even team aspect to this sport that’s usually gen-

erally judged pretty individually.” The IHSA added a regional component to the state series this season, decreasing the number of sectionals statewide but increasing from two to six the number of teams who advance from them. More wiggle room figures to bode well for bowlers with a tendency to grow tight. As Fett hopes the North Stars will learn, there’s no harm in opening up a bit.
