Alyssa Arroyo, 18, a senior at St. Charles North High School and resident of St. Charles, teaches a dance class at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles.
Businesses gear up to hire summer workers By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com St. Charles East High School senior Megan Murtaugh was looking for a way to earn extra cash and gain some job experience last year when she found out that the St. Charles Park District needed people to work at the front desk at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles. The 17-year-old was hired in March 2013 and now spends 15 to 20 hours a week performing such tasks as answering the phones at the community center and helping people register for classes. And she has some advice for her fellow teens who are looking for work. “It is really important to put yourself out there and to
find something that works for you,” Murtaugh said. Despite the snow still on the ground, local businesses are getting ready to hire summer help. The St. Charles Park District hosted its annual Teen Job Fair in cooperation with the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 17 in the Pottawatomie Community Center gymnasium. The fair was for those ages 16 to 24. Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden in St. Charles looks to hire between five and 10 teens for the summer, manager Christa Bormann said. “It’s keeping everything local,” Bormann said. “We’re a local business, and we like to make sure we hire local teens.” The St. Charles Park District’s annual Teen Job Fair
attracts hundreds of teen job seekers. “Last year, more than 300 teens were at the fair,” said Lara Piner, the park district’s recreation supervisor. “We originally started the job fair just for ourselves and then added local businesses so there is more of an opportunity for teens.” The fair has proven to be a good way for the Park District to find summer help, Piner said. “We probably hired 80 to 100 teens last year,” she said. The job market could be tight this summer for teens seeking jobs, especially college students. Craig Frank, president of Frank’s Employment in St. Charles, said those who are seeking jobs should apply early.
“This summer will be similar to last summer,” Frank said. “Most of the positions we are seeing are for experienced and advanced positions. It’s not something that college students without experience can step into.” Funway Ultimate Entertainment Center in Batavia usually hires about 10 teens during the summer. The teens typically are high school seniors or college students. Funway owner Bob Hansen called it “a fun environment for the kids.” “It’s a first job for a lot of people,” Hansen said. “They get a learning experience for future jobs.” For some teens, the summer job ends up turning into a career.
“Many of our students are looking to go into special recreation or special education,” said Alex Redenius, support staff manager for Fox Valley Special Recreation Association. “They look to us to gain some of those experiences to see if a career in special education is the right path for them.” The association provides year-round recreational opportunities for residents with disabilities, including summer day camp programs for children with disabilities. Redenius said “it is not an easy summer job.” “They are going to work hard,” Redenius said. “But gaining that experience at such an early age is so valuable.”

The St. Charles Park District is offering early bird passes to facilities such as Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Swanson Pool. It also is offering a new Punch Card Pass to play six rounds of golf for $75 at Pottawatomie Golf Course.
ST. CHARLES PARK DISTRICT There’s no question this winter has been for the birds. If you count yourself among the “angry birds” (and we don’t mean the video game), the St. Charles Park District has ways to turn that frown around. Take advantage of our great pre-season pricing packages on aquatic fun and join the early birds. Whether you choose to go off the deep end at Swanson Pool in Pottawatomie Park on the city’s east side or float down the Lazy River at Otter Cove Aquatic Park on the west, there are significant savings to be earned through the early bird season pass program. Depending upon the level of membership selected, visitors could see savings anywhere from $5 to $14. Two new rate offers are being rolled out this year: the Under 3 and Free program, and a half-season pass valid from July 12 to Sept. 1 to accommodate those whose early summer vacation plans take them away from St. Charles at the beginning of the season. Not only is daily admis-

CURBING YOUR INSTINCTS Whenever we descend stairs, step down from curbs, or step onto an escalator, we instinctively look downward to see where we are going. Of course, this is all well and good unless you are wearing reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses. These magnifying lenses do not pose a problem as long as we look straight ahead, but looking down at stairs and curbs through the bottom section of the lenses can be a disorienting experience. The lenses can blur the floor and ground, making it difficult to see possible hazards and to gauge distances. As a result, falls are more likely to occur. To avoid this problem, glasses with single-vision distance should be worn while walking. P.S. One study found that people who wear reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses were twice as likely to fall as those who did not.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A fast-food restaurant in St. Charles is temporarily closed for construction. McDonald’s, 1915 W. Main St., notified customers over the weekend that it would close Feb. 23 with plans to reopen in June by posting a statement on its doors. “After 50-plus years, we will be closing the restaurant on Sunday night [Feb. 23],” the message from Yanni Management stated. “We will be rebuilding in the same location to better serve you. We will be reopening in the early part of June. Please visit one
“We will be rebuilding in the same location to better serve you. We will be reopening in the early part of June. ” Yanni Management Company statement of our other locations located in St. Charles [on East Main Street] or in Wasco on Route 64. Thank you for all of your support and look forward to seeing you in June.” The St. Charles City Council approved McDonald’s plans in May 2013. According to city doc-
uments, McDonald’s plans to demolish the existing building and construct a new 5,234-squarefoot restaurant in its place. Documents indicate the new building will be farther west on the property and oriented to be parallel with West Main Street. The restaurant also will have a drive-thru with a dual-order station, 49 parking spaces and new and enhanced landscaping. This rebuild comes more than a year after the McDonald’s in downtown Batavia reopened with a new look. That location, 125 W. Wilson St., reopened in December 2012 after the previous restaurant, which first opened in 1978, was razed that September.

• SUMMER Continued from page 5 boats that can hold one to four people. But even though it sounds like paradise right now, not every day can be spent playing in the pool. Sometimes, you want to get out on dry land, and for that there’s the Park District’s award-winning Pottawatomie Golf Course. Ranked the best nine-hole course in America by Golf World magazine, this Robert Trent Jones-designed course is an inviting outlet for families looking for a new and exciting activity that everyone can enjoy. A great teaching course with expert instruction provided by course manager and PGA golf pro Ron Skubisz, Pottawatomie has just installed new-to-the-game tees that are positioned to encourage, not intimidate, the beginning or younger golfer who isn’t quite in Tiger Woods’ league – yet. This short-course
perspective is specifically designed for those golfers who cannot attain drives of 100 yards or more. But with private lessons and junior clinics, plus equipment rental, the staff at Pottawatomie Golf Course can help eager players get there. Families or individual players will want to take advantage of Pottawatomie’s new Punch Card Pass to play six rounds of golf for $75 – which comes to approximately $12.50 per person – to realize a significant savings over regular season greens fees. Valid any day of the week, Punch Cards are an economical way for the beginning golfer to get in those all-important practice rounds. If the old saying is true – that the colder the winter, the sweeter the summer – then St. Charles should have earned itself a beauty. Be prepared for the hot times to come with early bird season passes to your favorite warm weather activities.

ST. CHARLES - A city committee Feb. 24 gave its formal support for a project to boost the use of the Fox River. The Government Services Committee voted 9-0 on a motion to support the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation to continue forming a task force for the Active River Project. The project aims to utilize the Fox River as an economic and recreational engine to improve St. Charles, said John Rabchuk, treasurer of the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation. This is the second governmental body to voice their support for the project. On Feb. 11, the St. Charles Park District Board voted 5-0 in favor of joining the task force after Rabchuk presented information on the project. The city committee saw the same presentation Feb. 24.

Actor’s death spurs advocacy group By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The recent death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman from an apparent heroin overdose highlights the drug’s danger and insidious effect on those who are affected, said Lea Minalga, Hearts of Hope founder. But it also provides an avenue for the group to provide training on the use of naloxone – trade name Narcan – an injectable antidote drug for heroin or opioid overdose. Minalga recently held the first of three training sessions for Kane County Sheriff’s deputies. Hearts of Hope, based in Geneva, provides support, advocacy and education on addiction for addicts and their families. “My reaction to his death was terrible shock that such a brilliant mind, one of the most brilliant actors of our time, should die from heroin,” Minalga said. Media attention to the Oscar-award winning actor, who was 46 when he died Feb. 2 in New York, also serves as an opportunity to provide information to the public on the dangers of heroin, she said. “The light is being shown,”

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies received the first of three trainings in the use of naloxone – trade name Narcan – a drug used to reverse overdoses of heroin and other opiates. The training was presented by Lea Minalga of Hearts of Hope, a Geneva-based nonprofit that provides support and advocacy for those who are addicted and their families. Minalga said. “It needs to warrant an alert that it can happen to anyone, rich or poor, actors or the quiet reserved kid in the back of the lunchroom at school.” Minalga said heroin users are getting younger, while heroin is getting more pure. “It takes anyone in its wake down,” Minalga said. “It kills, steals and destroys, and it robs our loved ones from us. [Hoffman’s] death is a total tragedy. He’s leaving three kids behind.”
Heroin is an opioid synthesized from morphine. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number of Americans using heroin increased to 669,000 from 373,000, during 2007 to 2012. The Kane County Coroner’s Office said there were 22 confirmed heroin overdose deaths in 2013, but none confirmed so far this year. Minalga said Hearts of
Hope is providing naloxone training. Parents with a heroin addicted son or daughter also are taking the training and having the drug kits available in case of accidental overdose, she said. “Sheriff [Pat] Perez was so open to have me teach them how to revert an overdose,” Minalga said. “Naloxone works within a few minutes. There will be an officer who will save a life and very shortly because heroin use is so prevalent in this area. They are going to be first responders, even before the ambulance gets there.” Hearts of Hope received its training and the naloxone drug kits through Chicago Alliance Recovery, working with the Harm Reduction Coalition a national organization. According to its website, http:// harmreduction.org, volunteers worked with legislators to enact a new law in 2010 supporting overdose prevention to protect prescribers and lay persons who use naloxone. Minalga started Hearts of Hope because of her own son’s heroin addiction. Before becoming clean, she said her son survived four overdoses. “Usually, you have about 30 seconds before you know you’re going out,” Minal-
ga said her son told her. “He saved himself by calling 911 when he was alone. It [naloxone] probably would have saved Hoffman’s life if he’d had it.” Minalga’s group provides support for relapse prevention. “All people who have used [heroin] have been altered forever. It changes their brain,” Minalga said. “At Hearts of Hope, we have seen ... what a struggle it is to get to the other side of sobriety. It never comes without pain and terrible suffering.” Perez said there will be two more rounds of naloxone training so all deputies will be able to administer the opiate antidote quickly. “We had two heroin overdoses [this month], in Hampshire and in St. Charles, but no deaths resulted,” Perez said. As to the significance of Hoffman’s death, Perez said it just shows the power of the heroin addiction, no matter what a person’s circumstances are. “He was a person who was intelligent, talented, and money was not an issue,” Perez said of Hoffman. “It was a matter of once that addiction took hold, it was ongoing.”

Two-time James Beard Award-winning authors Andrew Dornenburg (center, left) and Karen Page (center, right) talk with members of the St. Charles North High School newspaper club.
Best-selling author honored as St. Charles distinguished alumni By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Former St. Charles High School student and best-selling author Karen Page has certainly distinguished herself since graduating from St. Charles High School in 1979. The two-time James Beard Award-winning author received a Distinguished Alumni Award on Feb. 22 during a ceremony at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. Her books include bestsellers such as “The Flavor Bible,” “Culinary Artistry,” “Becoming A Chef” and “What To Drink With What You Eat.” Page lives in New York City with her husband, former professional chef Andrew Dornenburg, and the couple have collaborated together on several books. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf recently did an email interview with Page about the honor.

Two-time James Beard Award-winning author Karen Page (center) talks with members of the St. Charles North High School newspaper club. Page, a 1979 graduate of St. Charles High Eric Schelkopf: Congratulations on receiving School, was presented a Distinguished Alumni Award by the school district recently.
the St. Charles School District’s Distinguished Alumni Award. What does it mean to you to receive the award? Karen Page: It means I’m getting older! When I think about it quickly, high school seems like it was maybe 20 years ago – certainly not the 35 I discover when I run the actual numbers. How did those years fly by so quickly? I’m reminded that it means I need to take the time to appreciate each and every day. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to meet with some of St. Charles High School’s current student newspaper staff on Friday, as I have so many fond memories from my own days on the staff and as its co-editor-in-chief in 1979. ES: I understand that former St. Charles High School journalism instructor Candace Perkins Bowen, along with staff member Esther Kaplan, inspired you when were attending high school. How did they inspire you? What did the experience of being the co-editor of your school newspaper teach you? KP: The year I served as co-editor-in-
chief, our St. Charles High School school newspaper, the X-Ray, won All-American (the highest) status in a competition of high school newspapers. I think that says everything about what an extraordinary staff we had during the 1978-79 school year, including the first semester editor-in-chief, Barb Linder (now Millard, of Batavia), who was a dear friend of mine and someone with whom I’ve been happy to keep in touch all these years. She’s run a transcription company that does excellent work and which I’ve used to transcribe countless taped interviews I’ve conducted for a number of my books, so Barb and her team had confidential access to some fascinating conversations about food and wine that made it into several award-winning books. And I think that says everything about what an extraordinary newspaper adviser we had in Candy Perkins, who raised the bar for us and taught us to always aim for excellence. She also helped to instill a level of impeccability to do
whatever it takes to make deadlines. When the weight of the snow on the roof of St. Charles High School caused the official closing of school, she supported us in unofficially coming in to school on our own time to get the paper out. Esther Kaplan worked in the guidance office, and the fact that she took the time to line-edit some of my stories after they’d already appeared in the paper (at my request) also exemplifies the level of excellence I found at the high school. I learned – and am still learning – to be more concise. ES: What words of inspiration do you have for high school students who might not yet know what they would like to do with their lives? KP: I believe Joseph Campbell had it right when he said, “Follow your bliss.” Go down the avenues that interest you most, and keep learning more. And John Irving had it right
when he advised, “get obsessed and stay obsessed.” Get to know yourself, get to know others and get to know the world. Be passionately curious about all three. I used to spend a lot of time in magazine stores skimming for articles that captured my attention. Today, the Internet is such a gift – all you have to do is surf the Web to see where your interests take you. Keep an eye out for problems that need to be solved and solve them. Every one of the books we’ve written is the solution to a problem, and I’d venture to guess our most successful books have been effective solutions to pressing problems. ES: The books that you and your husband have written have been described as “the best place to experience the cult of the New American chef.” What would you like your books to do? KP: I write the books I want to read that don’t exist yet – so my aim is always twofold: To learn something about a particular subject, and to share what I learn in a way that is useful to others. I am so touched when we visit restaurants and the chef apologizes for asking us to sign a well-worn, dog-eared copy of one of our books that has sauce stains on its pages. There could be no higher compliment to an author that her book is actually being read and used. We have literally signed curved inscriptions around those sauce stains, which we believe to be badges of honor, and seeing duct tape holding the spine of an obviously much-loved book together always melts my heart.

MYSTERY DINER Restaurant reviews
Jambalaya serves tasty N’awlins fare ST. CHARLES – Located at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, the restaurant Jambalaya bills itself as offering the tastes and nightlife of New Orleans. Though I’ve never been to “The Big Easy,” I’m familiar with the famed food from the area, and I was eager to sample some of the flavor. Jambalaya offered affordable fare, with menu selections that certainly delivered on the promised experience, at least the best it could on a chilly February day. And I knew I would have to go for some signature dishes – a small bowl of gumbo, and an Atlantic Whitefish Po’ Boy” Both are listed among the house specialties. Both dishes were big on taste, with portion sizes that left me full and satisfied. I chose the small bowl of gumbo, which included shrimp, crawfish, andouille sausage and steamed rice. The rice poked out above the bowl, and the first taste was warm and dominated by the rice. The next few bites were filled with seafood, and each spoonful provided a slightly different take. I’m a big fan of shrimp, so I knew that would be my favorite feature, but the sausage had the expected spice and the crawfish was tasty, too. It had a good kick to it, which is especially welcome as we navigate through so many below-freezing days. Unless you’re really hungry, stick with the small bowl, as it was more than enough. And I still had the main course to come. The Atlantic Whitefish Po’ Boy featured three thick fish pieces sitting atop a bed of what was called creole slaw, along with tomatoes. The pieces were surrounded by grilled French bread and accompanied by a just-enough smattering of curly fries. The sandwich was spicy, but there was less of a kick

here than there was with the gumbo. The fish had been cooked just right, and there was more than enough of it. It held together nicely, and even with three separate pieces
of fish, the sandwich didn’t break. There were other choices on the po’ boy menu as well, including pulled pork, crab cake and crispy spicy chicken. I didn’t opt for the signature jambalaya, though that promised to be a meal itself, with a lunchtime price of $16.50, which would have been less than the combined price of the gumbo and the po’ boy. Most po’ boys had a lunch price of $11, with the crab cake option at $12.50. I dined with a friend, who chose the VooDoo Burger, part of a colorfully named burger menu, which included the Mardi Gras Burger (pulled pork, smoked gouda and onion strings) and the Fatty Patty’s Burger (double patty, with bacon, avocado, grilled onions
and mushrooms on a pretzel roll). Most burgers were $11, but the Fatty Patty’s was $15. The service was solid, even though we arrived only minutes before the end of the lunch service time – which is 2 p.m. The place wasn’t full, but it was active even at that time, and it’s likely the place comes to life at certain hours, depending on what is going on at Pheasant Run. Jambalaya has New Orleans-themed decor, and it had big, comfy-looking booths, with tables set up in between. There was plenty of space. The bar area includes a few small TVs, which were showing news and sports programming. A visit to Pheasant Run’s website shows that Jambalaya also offers live entertainment,
with bands on some Saturday nights and a DJ, dance party and karaoke on Friday nights. Also, the trip to Jambalaya takes you through a bit of the entertainment side of Pheasant Run, past Zanies Comedy Club. If you’re headed to Pheasant Run for a show, and you’re in the mood for a little gumbo, you’ll find it at Jambalaya.

Maggie and Jack are in accord is their concern that their daughter’s intended spouse, Cameron (Keith Compton), doesn’t strike them as a match made in heaven. “My father told me you wouldn’t ever amount to anything,” Gwen tells Jack, adding, “Cameron already hasn’t amounted to anything.” Cameron, who works unhappily in the finance department at a Subaru dealership, one of the businesses owned by Maggie’s stepfather, is the first to admit that he never surprises anyone. Traces of Culliton’s soap opera background manifest themselves in Act II of the comedy. Characters admit to having underestimated one another; there’s a brief episode involving fisticuffs; and a big financial secret is revealed. But as with all good comedies, a happy ending prevails. Steele puts a lot of heart into her role as the interfering Gwen; Able smoothly delivers some of the play’s sharpest punch lines; and Sherry’s character, Norm, fits the description that’s given to him by Jack: “Norm’s like North Korea – just because he’s ridiculous doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous.” And, as it turns out, Compton and Zawada, playing the engaged twosome, are full of surprises in this engaging comedy.

teel Beam Theatre in St. Charles has a hit on its hands with the premiere of “The Bay of Portugal,” a lively romantic comedy by New York-based actor and soap opera writer-turned-playwright Richard Culliton. Culliton, who has written scripts for “Days of Our Lives,” “As the World Turns” and “General Hospital,” also starred last season in Steel Beam’s production of “The Seafarer” and, earlier, in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Later Life” and “Love Letters.” The playwright’s Steel Beam ties are linked to its founder, Donna Steele, who also appears in “The Bay of Portugal.” Both Culliton and Steele were theater students at Northwestern University. The new play, directed by Terry Domschke, is set in the Chicago area where two estranged parents are brought together for an engagement party of their daughter. But Gwen (Donna Steele), who still harbors a fair share of acrimony, is put off that her former mate, Jack (Pat Able), would even put in an appearance at the party. Years ago before their divorce, the couple were both actors in a Shakespearean touring company; she played Rosiland to his Orlando in “As You Like It.” On the surface, Gwen now has it all – a husband who provides a comfortable lifestyle and social status that comes with privilege. Things are far different from the past when life was a struggle and Gwen and Jack were living hand to mouth. However, as the play unfolds, cracks in the veneer reveal a different picture. Gwen’s marriage to Norm (Bill Sherry) isn’t on solid ground, and her relationship with daughter Maggie (Valerie Zawada) is at times testy at best. One thing on which

SOUTH ELGIN – The popular musical “Oklahoma” will be staged by South Elgin High School students in March. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7; and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8. “It’s a fun musical with underlying serious tones,” said Joseph Beaty, who plays the male lead of Curly, in a news release. “There are controversial themes of sex and violence that people didn’t really talk about back in the time when it was set or when it was written.” Some of the controversy centers around the violence of Jud Fry. “They incorporated Jud as a contrast to Curly,” said Jim Chrouser, who plays Jud, in the release. “Curly is lighthearted, easy-
go-lucky and popular, and Jud is serious and unattached and doesn’t know how to function in society.” But at the heart of the musical is the romance between Curly and Laurey. Maddie Hayes, who – as the female lead – plays the more proper Laurey, said in the release that she thinks her character has her own unconventional qualities. “Laurey’s really strong,” she said. “She doesn’t want to conform and be with this guy [Curly]. She plays hard to get.” For tickets in advance, call Karen Brhel at 847-2893760, ext. 3486 or email her at karenbrhel@u-46.org. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. The box office will open one hour before each show. South Elgin High School is located at 760 E. Main St. in South Elgin.
ST. CHARLES – Continuing its season of “Musical Travels,” The Orion Ensemble will showcase “Sounds of Russia,” featuring works by Igor Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff and welcoming three special guests, including a quintet from Geneva High School. Orion’s debut performance will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles. The students who will perform are Tyler Munoz, violin I; Caroline Neal, violin II; Marc Hornig, viola; Kevin Schneider, cello; and Ryan Schneider, bass. In addition, Aydan Hensley of Geneva will perform at a Wednesday, March 12, performance in downtown Chicago. “Sounds of Russia” will include “Suite from L’Histoire du Soldat for Clarinet, Violin and Piano” by Stravinsky, considered by many to be among the most influential composers of the 20th century. The music is part of a larger work for improvised theater created by Stravinsky and his author/friend Ramuz in 1918. The tale is an adaptation of the Faust story, about a soldier who trades his violin for great wealth, only to realize the folly of his decision later. Joining Orion for guest performances are two seniors from the Chicago High School for the Arts; pianist, composer and Columbia College Chicago director of keyboard studies Sebastian Huydts; and violinist and violist Stephen Boe, a chamber musician who has performed with the Chicago Ensemble and is on faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago. Single tickets cost $26 for general admission, $23 for seniors and $10 for students; children 12 and younger will be admitted free. SPORTS&REC By DENNIS D. JACOBS genevarepublican@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Few players can light up a scoreboard like Liza Fruendt, but if the Batavia girls basketball team is going to continue to advance in postseason play against increasingly stiffer competition, the Bulldogs will need other players to carry some of the offensive load. In a Class 4A sectional semifinal Feb. 25 at Addison Trail, that player was sophomore Hannah Frazier. The 6-foot-2 post player scored 21 points, including the biggest 3 of the night, as Batavia edged Downers Grove North 57-52. The Bulldogs (21-9) appeared to be in control of the contest with a little more than five minutes left when Fruendt (31 points) buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Batavia a 52-39 lead. But the Trojans (26-3) scored the next 13 points to tie the game. “I think that’s just what good teams do,” Fruendt said. “That’s a good team. They did it all year to teams, but in the end … we got the stops we needed.” One of those came with less than a minute to play when the Mustangs had a chance to take the lead. Freshman Mackenzie Foster came down with a big rebound for the Bulldogs, who ultimately called timeout to set up a play to get the ball inside to Frazier. Things didn’t work out quite like Batavia coach Kevin Jensen planned, but Frazier made it work anyway, even after missing her initial shot. “She had a good seal, went up and got the rebound and went right back up,” Jensen said. “It didn’t matter if she was giving up any size. She had the leverage. That ball was going to go in.” The play was actually designed to run to the right side

Her shot was well off the mark and Fruendt grabbed the rebound, her ninth of the game, to secure the victory. Her two free throws
with 0.4 seconds left accounted for the final margin. “We knew we could win this game,” Fruendt said. “We just dug deep. We dug as low as we could in our hearts tonight to get this victory. It’s really meaningful for us and our program.” Batavia has never won a sectional championship but will have a chance Thursday, Feb. 27, when it faces familiar foe in Geneva at Addison Trail. “It’s super exciting,” Frazier said. “It’s cool to make history with the team. It’s such an amazing group of girls. We just want to keep winning to stay together.” Green, a 6-1 sophomore,
scored 17 points for Downers Grove North. She hit a pair of 3-pointers in the game’s opening moments to put the Trojans up 6-0 and Batavia played catch-up the rest of the half, trailing 31-27 at the break. The third quarter was decisive, with the Bulldogs opening the period on a 13-2 run to open up a 40-33 lead. “I said [at halftime], ‘If you were wanting to make a bigtime play this year, this would be the game to do it in,’” Jensen said. “That was pretty much it. I’d like to say it was coaching, but I know it wasn’t. They’ve been resilient all year. We just keep doing what we’re doing and we think we’ll have a chance to win in the end.”
The Bulldogs battled the lanky Trojans evenly on the boards, with Frazier and Erin Bayram each latching onto seven rebounds. After a pair of exciting finishes in the semifinals, Thursday’s sectional championship game is shaping up as an epic moment in the long Batavia-Geneva rivalry. The Bulldogs swept the regular season series, but the teams shared the Upstate Eight Conference River title. “I’m excited,” Fruendt said. “They’re playing really good right now, winning 10 or 11 in a row. And I think we’re playing really good right now, and it’s going to be a fun game. I’m sure this gym will be insane.”

I am a massive, mysterious animal that travels through the deep, dark ocean, and have been hunted by humans throughout history. I have a large head and a huge brain. Who am I? One of the most squishy of all life under the sea, I am a cephalopod known for my eight long tentacles. But enemies, beware: I spray my prey with ink that can blind them. Who am I?

I am the star of the sea, an echinoderm with spiny skin. I have five arms that reach out from a the center of my body, where my mouth is. Who am I?

I am fierce and sharp, hunting prey in the dark water. Enemies are certainly scared away from my fast speed and many sharp teeth. But look out – I have a distinctive dorsal fin that sometimes gives me away. Who am I?
