Republican governor primary: Bruce Rauner Illinois has big problems. Years of fiscal mismanagement and incompetent leadership have compromised the state’s economic future. Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by more than $100 billion. The state ended 2013 with more than $7 billion in unpaid bills. Illinois’ credit rating has been downgraded five times since 2011, meaning taxpayers must pay much more in interest when the state borrows money. Moody’s Analytics predicted that Illinois will be dead last among all 50 U.S. states in job growth in 2014. It’s clear that those running state government have failed and change is long past due. On Tuesday, March 18, Republican primary voters have an opportunity to select the

candidate they want to run against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election. State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are making a second run for the office. (Brady won the GOP nomination four years ago before losing a close election to Quinn.) Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford also is running, though his campaign has been rocked by sexual harassment charges leveled by a former staffer. Rounding out the field is businessman Bruce Rauner, whom we endorse. Rauner is not a career politician. In fact, this is his first run for public office. He supports term limits and, if he is elected, pledges to serve only two terms. He’s independently wealthy and will not be beholden to the special interest

groups that have helped to corrupt Springfield. He will not be afraid to stand up to the powerful public employee unions that have resisted change. His wealth was not given to him. He earned it during a lifelong career as an investor and businessman. Rauner is blunt when assessing the state’s many problems. Workers’ compensation is crushing businesses and an impediment to job growth. Despite a recent reform measure, public pensions are overly generous and unsustainable in the long term. The state’s tax system is unduly burdensome to both taxpayers and businesses and needs to be reformed. Rauner knows big changes need to be made to get the state back on the right path. Despite the many challenges – and the fact that whoever wins the governor’s seat more

than likely will have to work with Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and a Democrat-controlled General Assembly – Rauner is confident he can get the job done. He has a genuine love for Illinois and a desire to improve the quality of life here. Rauner also knows his limitations. He admits that he himself doesn’t have all of the answers, but he promises to surround himself with the best and brightest and work as hard as necessary to succeed, just as he has in his professional life. Rauner has the energy, the charisma and the financial backing to stand up to Quinn in the fall and win. In the Republican primary for governor, we endorse Rauner.

Art and Hazel Clauter of Geneva, who have been married for 72 years, volunteer as docents at the Pioneer Sholes schoolhouse in St. Charles for three decades.

End of an era By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After more than 30 years, Art and Hazel Clauter finally ended their one-room schoolhouse days. The Clauters, who are from Geneva, have retired from their role as docents at the Pioneer Sholes School, in the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. The 96-year-olds were honored Jan. 21 by the Pioneer Sholes School Society for their contribution to the school. “They have just gone above and beyond the call of duty,” said Deanna Banner, the school’s executive director. “I

don’t know if we could ever replace them, they just had an undying amount of dedication ... they’re a tough act to follow.” The Clauters have driven by the school a few times since they stopped volunteering in October 2013, and they said seeing the school makes them content. “That schoolhouse has been pleasant,” Hazel Clauter said. “We’ve had a lot of happy experiences towards the people and school.” As docents, the Clauters greeted visitors, provided information and answered students’ questions. Hazel Clauter would sometimes lead as the teacher if the visiting

Clauters retire after 30 years helping at Pioneer Sholes one-room schoolhouse

instructor needed her to play that role. The Clauters always dressed up to match the era of the school, which opened in 1872. Art wore black overalls and a red bandanna around his neck to portray a farmer. Hazel wore a long dress with an apron, bonnet and shawl. The Clauters played a major role in gathering donations and keeping up the maintenance of the school, Banner said. The couple’s relationship with Pioneer Sholes began back in 1979 when Hazel was a third-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles. She happened to be at Leroy Oakes the day a truck pulled up with the

schoolhouse, which was being moved from David Sholes Farm in Burlington Township, Banner said. When the school was restored and opened for classes by 1981, Hazel Clauter became a frequent visitor there on class trips with her students. She became a docent full time after she retired from teaching in 1982. Art followed suit in 1983, after he retired from being vice president of sales at the Wrigley Corp. The Clauters’ mature age was a factor in their decision to retire. They both turned 96 at the beginning of the year, and Hazel Clauter began to use a walker this year.

“We’re getting a little old to be bouncing around the school,” Art Clauter said with a smile. After retirement, the Clauters still remain largely independent and will keep busy around their Geneva home. Hazel enjoys taking care of plants and gardening, and she and her husband are avid readers. They still have relatives that live in Illinois, and their two sons and daughter do visit on occasion. The Clauters said they will miss all the students who came to the school the most. “I always enjoyed the young kids; they really woke you up,” Art Clauter said.

Park District offers options for picnics ST. CHARLES PARK DISTRICT Spring is right around the corner, so while you’re searching for your T-shirts and sandals, you might also want to dig out that cooler and some paper plates. Picnic season will soon be upon us, and what better place for dining al fresco than at one of the park district’s many pavilions, pergolas and plazas? Whether it’s the historic pavilion at Pottawatomie Park or the quaint gazebo at Lincoln Park, there’s a structure and size right for every gathering, from corporate events and family reunions to a casual outing for mom, dad and the kids. With the picturesque Fox River as a backdrop, picnickers can opt for the tranquil settings of either the open air plaza or elegant pergola at Mount St. Mary Park, or the turn-of-the-century ambiance of the amphitheater at Pottawatomie Park. Nature lovers can dine amid the wonders of a restored savanna at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, while history buffs can relive days on a 1930s-era working farm at Primrose Farm Park. In all, there are 11 district parks that offer picnic shelters. Others include Delnor Park, the East Side Sports Complex, Ferson Creek Park, James O. Breen Community Center, River Bend Community Park and Timber Trails Park. Most shelters feature picnic-table-and-bench seating and electrical service. Grills are not provided, but picnickers can bring their own propane or charcoal grills for use outside the confines of picnic shelters. Many facilities offer hot coal containers for disposal of used charcoal. All park shelters are available through advance registration and require the completion of a permit application,

March 3 was his first official day as St. Charles’ economic development division manager in the Community and Economic Development Department, he Matt O’Rourke said. O’Rourke said Feb. 27 he is eager to get started. “I believe in this city,” he said, indicating that was one of the reasons he applied for the job. “I believe in what we’re doing.” In his new position, O’Rourke said he plans to make sure the city is collaborating with property owners to entice new businesses and retailers into town. “And keep existing ones here, too,” he added. O’Rourke will be under the direction of Community and Economic Development Director Rita Tungare, who in a written statement said the city conducted a thorough and comprehensive search of candidates.

Town House Books offers way to get to know authors By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

F

or the past several years, book lovers have had the chance to dine with their favorite authors through the popular “Dinner with the Author” series at Town House Books & Café in downtown St. Charles. The next event will take place on Thursday, March 13, at Town House Books, 105 N. 2nd Ave., with author Brigid Pasulka. Although the 7 p.m. dinner is sold out, people are welcome to come to the reception at 6 p.m. in the Garden Room at Town House Books, where Pasulka will be signing copies of her book “The Sun and Other Stars.” Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf recently spoke to Town House Books owner David Hunt about the “Dinner with the Author” series.

Eric Schelkopf: How long have you been doing your “Dinner with the Author” series? David Hunt: We’ve been doing them for about 15 years. We don’t do many of them a year. I think we’re close to maybe 20 or so events.

ES: So, how many events do you usually have a year? DH: It varies. Sometimes we’ll have several, sometimes we’ll have just one or two. And that’s the unique thing about it. We like to wait for some kind of personal connection with the author, like a staff member having read a book and liked it. We will either contact the author, or a lot of times publishers will contact us, because we kind of have a reputation of being a venue that authors really enjoy coming to. The meal is designed specifically for the book. It is kind of a loving tribute to the author and the work. The reason we don’t do them all the

than 15 years ago, and she did a signing for her book and we had a band playing outside and had some food. We wanted to make it more of a fun reception, rather than just a traditional book signing. Doug Bella, who is my business partner and runs the café, is the chef for the dinners. He decides what the meal is going to be. Edward Kelsey Moore wrote “The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat.” When he visited, Doug served Big Earl’s Short Ribs for the main course. Julia Glass was one of our National Book Award-winning authors who visited. The first time she came for her book “Three Junes,” Doug took a page from the book and actually recreated the meal that was talked about in the book itself. She will be here April 17 with her

new book, “And the Dark Sacred Night.” Set in the northeast, there likely will be New England fare.

ES: What will the menu be when author Brigid Pasulka is at your store? DH: Her book, “The Sun and Others Stars,” takes place in a little coastal town in Italy. There will be Italian food, of course, since it takes place in Italy, but I am not going to divulge the menu exactly yet. But it is specifically inspired by events in the book.

ES: How many people does the café seat? DH: It seats around 40 people. We can generally seat 40 people for the dinner, which has become very popular with book clubs. Sometimes we sell out these

Author dinners usually cost $40 a person. More information about Town House Books & Café is available at www.townhousebooks.com. dinners within a few hours. It’s really an intimate way to get to know the author. There’s three courses, and right after dessert, the author will read and talk about writing and then there will be a Q-and-A. It’s kind of a dinner party with the author, in an intimate, warm setting.

Folksinger Mark Dvorak will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Kiss the Sky Records in Batavia. He then will join the Waterline Writers group at 7 p.m. to read selections from his recently published book of essays and poems, “Bowling for Christmas & Other Tales From the Road.”

Folksinger Dvorak to host evening of story and song PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – “Chicago’s official troubadour,” Mark Dvorak, will make two special appearances on Sunday, March 16. Kiss the Sky Records, 180 W. First St., Batavia, will present Dvorak in a free concert at 6 p.m., and Dvorak will join the Waterline Writers group at 7 p.m. to read selections from his recently published book of essays and poems, “Bowling for Christmas & Other Tales from the Road.” “We’re absolutely thrilled that Mark is coming to Batavia,” said Steve Warrenfeltz, owner of Kiss the Sky, in a news release. “We’re very proud of our intimate listening space, and Mark’s acoustic sound will be a perfect fit.” Dvorak has given concerts and presentations nationally and internationally. Both events are free. CDs and books will be available for purchase and signing.

“Steve got in touch with the idea of collaborating on this event,” said Anne Veague, Waterline Writers founder and curator, in the release. “I read Mark’s book earlier this year and loved it. He truly has a gift, and his stories read like folk songs sound. They give the reader a feel for the kind of experiences he’s had as a traveling musician and remark on the sacrifices one makes in the arts.” Dvorak’s 2011 CD, “Time Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Me,” rose to No. 14 on the Cashbox Roots Report, according to the release. He has been on the faculty of Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music since 1986, where he is currently artist-in-residence. For more information on Mark Dvorak, visit www.markdvorak.com. For information about the concert, contact Kiss the Sky at 630-406-0086 or visit www.kissthesky.net. For information about the Waterline Writers, visit www.waterlinewriters.org.

Committed to a vision, Damilano waits. “It is important for us to put away 30 percent of the Cannubi we make,” Damilano said. “Consumers like to drink wine within three years, but we store some to really show future customers different vintages. It’s expensive and hard to wait, but the expressiveness of the wine after time is worth it.” The wine is made from Nebbiolo grown in calcareous clay and sandy soil on a hill in the heart of Barolo. Due to the high quality of fruit, minimalism has defined the winemaking. Damilano takes a hands-off approach. It will sit in the barrel for three years. “We’ve discovered Cannubi is so extraordinary,” Damilano said. “We just leave it alone for three years. After that it is perfect. Spectacular. “This is a wine that can age a long time. We look for an elegance and balance in the wine. There’s beautiful fruit. The alcohol doesn’t even get noticed, or you don’t feel it, because there is outstanding balance.” While food and wine are ep-

UNCORKED James Nokes

icurean partners that drive the philosophy of some winemakers, Damilano wants to make the most outstanding interpretation possible. “It’s such an extraordinary wine that it doesn’t need to be accompanied by a meal,” Damilano said. “We don’t always try to pair it with foods because the fruit makes such an elegant wine that is very expressive on its own.”

What to buy Damilano, Cannubi, Barolo 2008 ($85): This is the finest Italian wine I’ve opened in years. Its complex flavors are all complimentary. A refined and elegant mouth feel yields dark chocolate, coffee, cherry and plum notes. There’s a hint of tobacco leaf that ties things up nicely. The tannins are pleasant, and over time the wine opens up beautifully. This could easily be stashed away in a cellar for years and saved for a very special occasion.

Wine 101 A reserve bottling is next for Damilano. This project, which will take seven to eight years to come to fruition, will hold back bottles from the market for a special release.

nstant gratification took over the moment the Damilano Cannubi was opened. A special red wine from the Barolo DOCG region in Italy made of the Nebbiolo varietal deserved to be opened after years in a dark cellar. Its acidity and tannins tamed by time hold the bright fruit flavors together as they subtly ease into old age. But after just five years, owner Paolo Damilano’s wine shined. It was special right now and will continue to be so for anyone with the patience.

AURORA – Aurora native Kevin Presbrey of Kevin Presbrey & The Midwest will perform and host a vinyl release party for his solo debut album, “Dust Unto Dust,” at 9 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Two Brothers Roundhouse, 205 N. Broadway St., Aurora. The Americana album takes its cues from Jim Croce’s folk music, the Eagles’ country-tinged rock and Fleetwood Mac’s ’70s pop, according to a news release. “Dust Unto Dust” was pieced together from song fragments and lyrical ideas that Presbrey has been jotting down for years. The floodgates really opened after his father’s death in 2012, accord-

ing to the release. “When I lost my father, who’d been such a big supporter of my music and inspiration to me, I spent a lot of time thinking about something he’d told me over and over again throughout my life,” Presbrey said in the release. “He’d say, ‘Do what makes you happy, and do it as much as you can, because you never know how long you’ll be here to do it.’ There had been rougher times throughout the last few years where I’d questioned my music career and my writing, and now without my biggest fan, it seemed like maybe it was time to hang it up and try something else.” The free event is for adults ages 21 and older. SPORTS&REC By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Every blue-clad student who had been chanting and cheering for the Geneva girls basketball team suddenly converged on the Vikings and their newest piece of hardware. The Class 4A Judson Supersectional plaque survived the rush and the roar March 3 after Geneva beat Rockford Boylan, 60-41. Most importantly, so did the Vikings. “I was a little nervous I was going to get trampled,” freshman center Grace Loberg said, “but this makes it 10 times better.” “This” meant the euphoria swirling around a team that has won 14 straight games, a team that defeated an opponent from Rockford that entered with 23 consecutive victories. Geneva (26-5) advances to face Rolling Meadows in a state semifinal at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 7. The Vikings don’t figure to fret upon their arrival. “We never had doubts. We knew we could do it. It was just whether or not we wanted to,” junior forward Abby Novak said. “Whether or not we could push to do it. We knew we were capable of doing it. We had the talent and the effort that we needed to win, and we did.” Boylan (27-6) challenged Geneva in the first half after a sluggish start, but its ever-changing zone and man defensive looks eventually gave way to frustration. The Vikings opened the third quarter on a 8-0 run in 2:15, then settled in. The Titans’ Jensen Blassage led all scorers with 19 points, but Geneva usually had the answer at the other end. “They would switch a lot and we had to be aware of everything, but we obviously did well adjusting to that,” Novak said. Geneva enjoyed a 39-16 re-

The 6-foot-2 Loberg (18 points) and 6-foot Novak (16) reaped the benefits most often. “I just tried to be as big as I could and then take the ball up as hard as I can,” Loberg said. “Try to make plays.” Novak, who yielded her starting spot to a rejuvenated senior guard Michaela Loebel (knee) earlier in the postseason, provided a spark after returning to the starting lineup. Loebel told Novak before the game that Loebel would only take the floor as a reserve. Novak scored four points early to key a 9-2 spurt to start the game, but the player with a name tailor-made for student section chants – “AB-BY NOVAK!” – kept storming. She delivered arguably her

The basket provided a 4733 lead. Cue the students and the usual fare of comfortable leads. Six weeks ago, “Whey so quiet?” might have encapsulated the Vikings’ mood after successive losses to Batavia and even-

tual 2A state champion Champaign St. Thomas More in less than 24 hours. “Warm up the bus!” on March 3 referred not only to the shuttles taking fans to their cars at various points on campus, but the likely fan transportation headed downstate. “I don’t think these kids care who they play. I really think that they believe they can play with anybody on the court,” Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said. “And we’ve got to continue to drill that and drill that. If you’re going to go [downstate], you might as well win a game, you know. I mean, let’s go. Let’s win two.” Geneva entered the state tournament 32-0 on its most recent appearance in the 2008-09 season, but lost both games and finished fourth. Meadows was an assistant to Gina Nolan then. Nolan since

has stepped down from her position to battle breast cancer and fight it into remission. Per usual, she was in attendance March 3. Geneva’s senior class has shown plenty of resolve. Guard/ forward Sidney Santos missed two seasons with knee injuries, while Loebel nearly did the same. Classmate Morgan Seberger has remained a constant in the Vikings postseason success and added 11 points March 3. As fans watched the Vikings climb one more ladder to cut down another net, Santos reflected on the journey so far. “I think the biggest thing about this year is the fact that our team can hold it together to clear each other’s head,” she said. “If someone starts getting worked up, we have each other to bring each other back down. It’s truly a team win, team atmosphere. All of us together.”

ruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and iber that will keep you healthy and help you grow to be tall and strong. Vegetables come from the earth, grown on farms across this country and beyond. But don’t leave it to the farming professionals — this spring, start planting your own garden. Location: Find a place with plenty of sun. Look for good soil that is away from trees and bushes that have big roots or branches that might interfere with your growing plants. You also will need to think about water — is your garden near a hose, or do you have another way to water your plants? If you don’t have access to land, plant your seeds in pots on a sunny porch or balcony. plan: Plants need space, so make sure not to overcrowd. Keep-

ing your seeds in rows helps you stay organized and can give your plants room to grow. Draw out a plan to maximize space.

WORD FIND Find these veggie words: Beans Broccoli Carrots Corn Lettuce

Peas Peppers Spinach Squash Zucchini

follow instructions: Read the directions on each pack of seeds, and follow them closely. If the directions say to plant each seed 2 feet apart, make sure to do that. Even though they might start out as little seeds, some plants can grow quite large, especially if you are doing a good job with them. maintain: Common gardening tools include a hose, watering

can, spade, rake and hoe. You will need a way to dig into the earth to plant your seeds, and also need tools to maintain your garden. Some of these can be helpful in removing weeds that will sprout up and crowd your plants. And don’t forget to water! If your plants are looking and feeling dry, make sure to give them a healthy shower.
