Library trustee celebrates 45 years on the board By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST.CHARLES – Throughout all the changes the St. Charles Public Library has experienced in the last several decades, there has been one constant: Norm Huntley. Huntley – who is described as a true leader who has the library’s best interests in mind 24/7 – joined the Board of Trustees 45 years ago this month. The 77-year-old said he never expected his initial term would lead to such a tenure. One reason kept him seeking re-election, he said. “I loved it,” Huntley said. “It was constant progress.” Indeed. When Huntley became a trustee in April 1969, the library was – in his word – small. During his tenure, which included 37 years as board president, the library has been remodeled and expanded, sometimes at the expense of existing homes. “Houses [were] right where we’re sitting here now,” he said in a room off the lobby. The houses were either demolished or relocated – an

effort that required a lot of coordination, Huntley said. He noted he was familiar with families that were affected because he was principal of nearby Lincoln Elementary School. Now-retired library director Diana Brown, who was hired under Huntley’s leadership, said he is a good source of library history and why certain decisions were made. She described him as a consensus builder who has true concern for the library. “He had such a clear vision of what he wanted the library to be,” Brown said. “He communicated that very well to the board and the staff. I think it was a really successful partnership because of that.” His vision included being a leader in technology, Brown said, echoing comments from Huntley himself. Those who ask why libraries are needed anymore think libraries are just for books, Huntley said. There is always something going on at the library, he said, naming teen study nights and children’s story times as examples. “I go back just before World War II,” he said, listing various technology that didn’t ex-

ist then. “You see the changes [in libraries] come about as technology advances.” Huntley said he has been part of a board that wanted to be responsive to the community, which in 1978 voted to convert it from a township library to a library district. In 2010, voters made another decision regarding the library. They rejected a $35 million referendum that would nearly double the 55,000-square-foot facility. Huntley said he views that outcome as a failure because of taxes – not as a failure for the library. When he sees the majority of patrons are happy, he said, “You know that something good is going on.” As for the library’s future, Huntley said, the board will continue to respond to the community’s wishes. “We welcome input,” he said. In addition to being supportive of the St. Charles Library Foundation – which was established under his leadership in 1993 – Huntley always has had a great deal of respect for the staff, Brown said. Five years ago, the board recognized Huntley by nam-

ing the main meeting room the “Norman C. Huntley Meeting Room” – an honor that “indicates how much respect and fondness we have for him,” Brown said. Huntley stepped down as board president about five years ago because he felt his health would limit him from making the public appearances that the president needed to do as part of the referendum process, said Tory Haines, his successor. She said she had some “pretty awesome” shoes to fill. “He has been a great mentor to me as far as my position as president,” Haines said. “He’s been very helpful, very supportive, very encouraging to me and at the same time always ready to assist me if he thinks that I should be doing things differently, but always in a kind and supportive way.” Huntley, who also worked at such St. Charles schools as Munhall and Fox Ridge, retired from his career in public education in 1994, he said. His term on the library board expires next spring, but he isn’t saying whether he’ll seek another six years. “Let’s call it an unknown,” he said.

Experimental gene therapy used to treat “choroideremia” (a rare and under-diagnosed genetic disease characterized by progressive vision loss, mainly among males) proved so successful that it is being hailed as a breakthrough treatment for blindness. The early trial was intended only to test the safety of the new therapy, which involves introducing a gene into the eye that is defective in those suffering from choroideremia, which causes about 4% of all cases of blindness. Much to the surprise of researchers, the treatment stopped the steady degradation of patients’ vision and seemed to have reversed some of the damage. In one case, the effects lasted two years. The treatment shows promise for other blinding diseases, most notably macular degeneration. P.S. The gene therapy mentioned above may hold great promise for treating retinitis pigmentosa in the future.

CHARLES – A city com- sales would help the store get mittee April 21 could not get a quicker return on the store behind a drive-thru grocery for the west side because of its proposed liquor sales. The Government Services Committee voted 7-1 in favor of denying a Class A liquor license to a proposed drive-thru grocery store. First Ward Alderman Ronald Silkaitus was the lone member to vote against the denial, and Dan Stellato, the other First Ward alderman, recused himself from the discussion and vote. Peter Bogle, the local businessman who founded the LLC group behind the grocery store, was disappointed with the committee’s vote. “We want [St. Charles] to be a city that’s leading, not following,” Bogle said after he left the meeting. “Another city is going to get it, and St. Charles is going to miss out.” Bogle wanted to open the store at 2071 Route 38 near the southeast corner of Randall Road and Route 38 in the former Quick Lube location. He estimated 50 percent of sales would be food and the other 50 percent would be beer and wine. The alcohol sales were a deal breaker for many of the alderman on the committee, including Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis. “I don’t think liquor needs to be made convenient,” Lewis said. Lewis noted that alderman were not supportive in initial discussions for a proposed drive-thru for the Lundeen’s Liquor express location, 1315 W. Summer’s here ... almost. School’s out ... almost. And Swanson Pool and Otter Cove Aquatic Park are ready to open ... almost. Who can stop thinking ahead to long, lazy days spent soaking up the sun by the pool? Part of the fun of going to the pool, however, is knowing your way around. And we’re not just talking directions to the concession stand or how to find the shadiest parking spot. One of the smartest ways to ensure you have the best possible time at the pool is to practice “safe soaks,” learning how to swim or improve your technique and understanding

how to play in and around the water responsibly. “Swimming is fun, and it is a great leisure or fitness activity, but you have to respect it, just like driving a car,” said Kristi Brewer, aquatics and youth programs supervisor. Luckily, May is National Water Safety Month. What better time to learn about safe water practices? A joint effort between the American Red Cross, the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, the National Recreation and Park Association and the World Waterpark Association, National Water Safety Month celebrates swimming as the most popular summertime activity by making sure that it also is one of the safest. To kick off the month-long awareness program, the St. Charles Park District will be offering an Aquatics Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday,

GOP senators call for Dems to ‘look in the mirror’ over spending, taxes

Michael Connelly Senator, R-Wheaton

there was “no middle ground” for compromise in Springfield, such as enacting a budget freeze. “We [Republicans] like to look on the cost side of things,” he said. “In Springfield, it’s revenue first, cost second – if at all.” Connelly said there also are several key business issues, such as Illinois’ high worker compensation policies, that are costing Illinois in ways that include the 2013 departure of Office Max from its Naperville headquarters in Connelly’s district. Addressing the state’s $100 billion pension shortfall also was a hot topic at the meeting. Murphy said if the Illinois Supreme Court finds the latest pension reform solution unconstitutional, the state government would likely have to

turn to a state amendment. Currently, the constitution states the benefits of state pensions and retirement systems “shall not be diminished or impaired.” “You’re not coming up with $100 billion,” Murphy said. “This was not a pleasant thing to go through, I have to say, but the truth of the matter is that the money is not there and it’s never going to be.” Murphy pointed out Illinois would have to devote three years of its current record-high $35 billion budget to fill the backlog. Kirk Dillard, a senator from Hinsdale and former gubernatorial candidate, also pointed to state education funding as a major issue facing suburban General Assembly members next year. Recently, there has been a serious conversation in Springfield about the inequality of school funding between downstate, Chicago and collar-county schools. “I’m all for helping a child in Chicago or Cairo, I just want to make sure that suburban schools – which are the strength of the quality of life we have here ... are not dumbed down in the process of school funding reform in Springfield,” he said.

Several Republican suburban senators gave some insight into the conversation they will be bringing to Springfield and the 2014 election cycle when they met the morning of April 17 at the Danby Station Cafe in Glen Ellyn to speak about the Illinois state budget and legislative session. Talk at the media event largely revolved around Democratic revenue solutions and the business climate of Illinois. To improve the “horribly unfriendly environment” for businesses in Illinois, U.S. Senate candidate and current senator from Sugar Grove Jim Oberweis said state government should be cutting taxes and reducing costs to attract current and future economic growth. “The idea that we should be approaching is how can we take a smaller piece of a bigger pie instead of constantly trying to take a bigger piece, which is making the pie that much smaller,” he said. Sen. Karen McConnaughay, who has a district office in South Elgin, said she had spoken to many local businesses contemplating leaving the state. “We love this state; there’s a lot going on – we’ve got a great employment base, we’ve got great assets, we’ve got great infrastructure,” she said. “But the policies that are put forward by the Democrats in Illinois are clearly sending a message to businesses of all sizes: ‘You are not wanted here.’ ” Sen. Matt Murphy, R-Palatine, pointed to the number of tax proposals being considered by Springfield Democrats – including the controversial progressive income tax amendment, extension of a 2011 state income tax hike and the recently abandoned millionaire tax – as evidence of Democratic commitment to raise more money instead of fixing spending problems. After more than 11 years of Democratic control, Murphy said it was time for “an alternative vision” of lowered tax rates. Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Wheaton, said in his experience on the Senate Appropriations Committee, it seemed

“We [Republicans] like to look on the cost side of things. In Springfield, it’s revenue first, cost second – if at all.”

survey by Visa was $835, she said “that, to me, sounds like a lot.” “My cost is going to be well under half of that,” she said, adding she thought it was “quite an overestimate for Geneva.” Kaneland senior Rachel Mathys said she is one who will spend a lot on a dress – around $600. But she said she will cut back in other areas. She said she had pulled a lot of dresses, and her mom pulled one as a joke and “thought it would make me look like a cupcake.” Instead, Mathys thought the baby blue dress that her mom selected looked elegant and classy, and she thought it was a good match for her style.

That’s with Sophie wearing a dress that had been worn by an older sister. Lexi Roach, a senior at Kaneland High School, said she will be headed to her third prom this year. Kaneland’s prom is at Northern Illinois University. She said she expects to spend a total of $500 on prom this year. She said she knows of some friends who will spend more than $1,000, but she said some will spend much less. While the experience and the dress costs will vary, she said, it’s a night that should not be skipped. She said it is a big social event, almost like a “mini red carpet,” and it is “a lot more formal than homecoming.” “I think prom is such a fun experience,” Roach said. “It’s totally different than anything we’ve experienced. I do think it’s a lot of money, but I think it’s worth it.” Geneva High School senior Jamie Maher, executive board president of the school’s student council, said she will wear a dress that “wasn’t terribly expensive.” Told that the Midwest average according to a national

Batavia parent Michelle Rush describes her two daughters’ prom nights as a highlight of their high school years. She remembers they looked beautiful, and had “a big smile on their faces.” In order to get to that point, however, there was a lot of work, she said. There were trips “all over the place” to get the perfect dress. They had to get their hair and nails done at beauty salons. They had to arrange for flowers. There was the jewelry and the shoes to select. By the time it was all done, she figured the cost was about $800 for each child. “I think the moms I talked to kind of felt the same, that this is a crazy amount to spend for one evening,” Rush said. “But you don’t want to be the mom who says, ‘You can’t get the dress.’ … You bite the bullet and do it.” The prom experience in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area can vary, depending on how each student approaches the big night. But at each school, the event remains significant, and it’s an occasion for which stuSandy Bressner – sbressner@shawmedia.com dents do go out and get special Batavia High School junior Amanda Rice tries on a prom dress at Clauattire.

were happy, that you were optimistic about everything.” Following surgery and chemotherapy, Kelley said he recently was told that he no longer has cancer. “It’s pretty spectacular news,” Kelley said. “We have to obviously keep an eye on things.” Among other services, the center features a new radiation oncology suite, which offers an upgraded accelerator designed to enhance the speed and precision of radiation therapy. “The new tools are helping people live longer and longer,” said Dr. Chris George, medical site leader for oncology services at Delnor. “Detecting cancer at an early stage, we still expect a cure. At the late stage, it is still a struggle.” Cadence Health is affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic in medical oncology. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Cleveland Clinic’s medical oncology as one of the nation’s top 10 cancer programs. The expansion of the cancer center began in 2012. One part of the center was open through the entire project to ensure that patients were able to continue to receive treatment. “The last thing that you want to do with patients is take away their treatment,” said Chris King, senior manager of public relations for Cadence. The new center is designed to provide all services for cancer patients in one convenient place. That includes private and semiprivate chemotherapy rooms; exam rooms for specialized medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; special-

ty care teams with expertise in treating specific cancer types; an on-site infusion pharmacy and lab; and support services, such as nutrition, genetics and financial counseling. “They can come here now from start to finish,” King said. The center sees 60 to 85 new patients a week. In the center’s conference room, George and other doctors get together as a team every day and talk about each case, including teleconferencing with the Cleveland Clinic.

One of those cases involved Karen Morrison of Elburn. In December, George diagnosed the 68-year-old as having lymphoma in her nose. “It’s not something you see with great regularity,” George said. “She got chemotherapy and felt better. It was a big day when she could sniff and eat without choking.” Morrison said her treatment has been going well. “I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve had minimal side effects,” she said. “From the first day I walked in the center, I felt like I’ve been in good hands.” The new center provides even more opportunities for those diagnosed with cancer, George said. “Cadence is 100 percent committed to making this the best cancer program in the western suburbs,” he said.

sages. She said it’s important to “match the colors exactly,” and this year has been a challenge. She said coral is a big color this year, and “coral is a very hard color to match.” Then there is the way guys will ask girls to the prom. Rush said she remembers: “It used to be just passing in the hall. … Now you have to come up with some elaborate way to ask the girls. I don’t think you get wedding proposals that are as elaborate.” At Geneva, Maher said was asked to prom by a barbershop quartet. “I thought it was great … they were very good,” Maher said.

Then there is the venue and the post-prom party. Mary Keyzer, the co-activities director for prom at Geneva High School, said officials there decided years ago to “kind of soup up prom and take it downtown.” At Kaneland, Roach said it’s an experience that should not be missed, adding, “to me, it’s a big deal.” And Rush said that, despite the ordeal to run around to get dresses for her daughters and all the cost that goes along with it, that it’s a night they always will remember. “They had a ball,” Rush said. “That’s why you do it, right?”

Letter carriers aren’t asking people to do much Saturday, May 10 – only to help Stamp Out Hunger. Since 1992, the National Association of Letter Carriers has designated the second Saturday in May as the date for its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Nationwide, letter carriers collected more than 74.4 million pounds of food in 2013, the second-highest amount in the program’s history, according to the association. Those wanting to contribute this year should place nonperishable items – including personal care items and pet food – next to their mailbox by 9 a.m. May 10. “It’s a painless gift,” said Paula Yensen, the executive director of United Way of Central Kane County. “They’ll come and do the work.” “We’re seeing very much of an increased need for food,” she said, noting the

Ex-St. Charles resident spreads musical message By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

rowing up in St. Charles, Scott Corbin first was exposed to music through his dad’s music store, St. Charles Guitar. Corbin learned his music lessons well. As an in-demand session guitarist, Corbin has worked with the likes of Tilky Jones, of the television show “Nashville,” as well as others. Corbin, 29, currently is one-half of the band Casely and the Jank, which plans to release its first full album in June after releasing an EP in January. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Corbin about his current activities. To learn more about the band, visit www.caselyandthejank.com. Eric Schelkopf: You grew up in St. Charles. When did you live in St. Charles? Scott Corbin: That would have been about 1985 through the mid-’90s, somewhere in that area. I lived there from the time I was about 1 year old to 11 years old, somewhere around there. Since then, I’ve actually been back. I spent several years living in the area. Schelkopf: There is a yoga app on the band’s website. How does that figure into your music? Corbin: We wanted to integrate a couple of things that we do personally into the music and the community of people that are following the music. Something that we have both done for several years now is yoga. We started this mobile app as a way for people to get familiar with yoga who may have never tried it before, or who are just starting out and may be a little intimidated to go into a class. We wanted to help by creating an app where they could practice and learn about different poses in yoga. We also provide music so they can meditate and relax and do their yoga, and kind of become a little more familiar with

Corbin: In the short term, we’ve focused all of our efforts on the release of our album for June 12, and sharing that with the international community. We personally feel that this is the style of music for the new, upcoming generation, the digital iPod generation, the millennium babies, and the people who grew up with technology. We personally feel like the music we’re creating is to represent and to speak for their generation.

Apple Villa’s baked apple pancake a treat

U

sing the words “tastebud explosion” to describe one of its signature dishes, I knew I was in for a flavorful treat when I visited Apple Villa Famous Pancake House and Restaurant in Batavia for breakfast. Imagine an oven-baked pancake with fresh Granny Smith apples, oozing cinnamon glaze, a crunchy cinnamon-infused crust and a delicate dusting of powdered sugar, and you have the Batavia eatery’s signature item – the Baked Apple Villa Pancake. (The popular pancakes also are available in the frozen food section of grocery stores such as Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s.) Warned about the pancake’s 45-minute bake time by our friendly waitress, my dining companion and I opted to sample other breakfast items on the menu to whet our appetites. After a perusing of the menu, it became evident Apple Villa offers diners more than the typical American breakfast fare, offering inventive twists on traditional dishes. Why order French toast when you can have the French Connection, which essentially is French toast, but made with cinnamon spiral bread, cinnamon apples, raisins and Georgia pecans. Or, maybe the Banana Bread Toast, or the Berry Berry Stuffed French Toast with raspberries, blueberries and strawberries is more your style. A plethora of pancake options grace the menu, as well, such as the Crisp Bacon Cakes, which use bacon-infused batter topped with even more bacon; or The Dutchess, an oven-baked dutch pancake filled with fresh broccoli, onion, tomato and mushrooms with a Havarti cheese topping. (The restaurant also serves lunch items, including salads and sandwiches.) Before ordering one mammoth-sized baked pancake to split, I tried one of Apple Villa’s specialty coffee drinks – the Carmel Mocha Cappuccino – which was served in a sculptural cup with an artsy saucer. Apple Villa uses gourmet Hawaiian Kona Coffee, which also can be purchased ground in a 12 ounce, vacuum-packed bag at the restaurant. Other than the coffee, Grade AA eggs, madefrom-scratch hollandaise and extra-thick cut

illapancakes.com hickory-smoked bacon are a few examples of the quality and freshness of the food. I ordered the Apple Villa Skillet – an ironskillet-less combination of hashbrown potatoes, diced hickory smoked ham, onions, mushrooms, melted cheese and a topping of scrambled eggs. The succulent mushrooms teamed perfectly with the smoky, flavorful chunks of ham. Normally, I’ll order a side of Ranch dressing or use ketchup for the hashbrowns, but no condiments were necessary. There were enough flavors swirling about to tantalize the tastebuds. My dining companion ordered the Hawaiian Omelette on special. The omelette was packed with crisp bacon, smoked ham, diced pineapple chunks and melted Swiss cheese. Both of our orders came with a side of buttermilk pancakes or toast. Similar to ordering a dessert after dinner, our breakfast ended with the apple-pie-esque, baked-apple pancake, which was a “flavor explosion” indeed. There are a lot of dining options for breakfast in the Tri-Cities, but Apple Villa’s warm, downhome atmosphere, great service and creative breakfast options make the cozy eatery worth a visit.

Best known for being the co-founder of the iconic band Traffic, Dave Mason on May 13 will release “Future’s Past,” which will feature new versions of his classic songs, plus new material he wrote and performed on tour over the last few years. Mason will perform Sunday, Dave Mason April 27, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets start at $29, available by going to www. oshows.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Mason about the new album. Eric Schelkopf: You are going to be releasing “Future’s Past” in May. What was the idea behind the album? Dave Mason: I’m always working on something when I’m home. The song, “World in Changes,” is absolutely nothing like the original. It’s not even close. A lot of the themes in my songs are timeless. I mean, the world’s always in change. And most of my lyrics are all somewhat relationship-based. So, that becomes a timeless thing. They’re good songs. There’s this one brand new song on there, “That’s Freedom.” I was trying to come up with the right title for [the album], and finally finished up with “Future’s Past.” Because the stuff on there still sounds fresh. It doesn’t sound dated. Schelkopf: Do you prefer any of the new versions over the old versions? Mason: Well, yeah. Like “As Sad And Deep As You,” that’s why I put it on there. To me, it just beats the original one hands down. It’s just such a beautiful version. I’m basically making it to

Schelkopf: Talking about reworking songs, of course, Joe Cocker hit it big with his cover of “Feelin’ Alright?” What do you think of his cover? Do you like it? Mason: I think it’s great. He turned it into “Feelin’ Alright,” because the song is not about feeling alright at all, not the way I wrote it. You listen to the original version on the second Traffic album, and you will get it. It’s about not feeling too good myself. The title of the song is “Feeling Alright?” with a question mark. It’s a question, feeling alright? Because I don’t feel too good. Schelkopf: Speaking about Traffic, the band made such an impact. What do you think it was about that band that connected with people? Mason: There was a lot of talent between the four people in there. And Steve Winwood was certainly a huge talent on his own, and had been with Spencer Davis. We were very innovative in a lot of ways, too. Traffic was sort of like one of the original alternative bands. Schelkopf: Are you upset the band Traffic didn’t continue longer? Or did it just last as long as it should have lasted? Mason: I think it was too bad that we all couldn’t have gotten back together at different times or whatever, yeah. That would have been nice. Schelkopf: The music industry has changed so much over the years. What do you think about the current state of the music industry? Is it better or worse than it used to be? Mason: It’s not so much the industry itself. The biggest problem is that there is really no radio like there used to be. Radio was the way that people heard new stuff, and got turned on to it.

Batavia High School will present “Almost, Maine” in May at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre in Batavia. “All the characters’ hopes and dreams in this play hinge on an ‘almost’ moment,” assistant director Lexi Jones said in a news release. “These are high-stakes moments full of doubt, bitterness, joy and love, and – as the play demonstrates – they help make our lives worth living.” This is the ninth production for Casburn, who directed last winter’s “The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza.” Teaming up again with Casburn is technical director Michael Baglieri, a 2009 BHS alum, who is noted for his set construction and special effects work on the fall production of “Shrek: The Musical.” For information, visit bataviafineartscentre. org.

family, friends, and especially my husband, Grant Cook, for your continued support.” The 29-year-old will go on to compete for the title of Mrs. America on Aug. 29 at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Az. he opportunity to embrace a troublemaker from a historic region was all Virginie Saverys needed. The owner of Avignonesi assumed control of the estate located in Italy’s Tuscan Appellation and has embraced both a return to natural winemaking and Sangiovese. While Sangiovese is Italy’s oldest quality-assurance labeled red wine, it is a varietal that both causes headaches and can yield fantastic rewards when the right touch is employed.

Winemaker spotlight Sangiovese is like a child. It needs constant attention and nurturing to reach its ultimate potential. “When it comes to having kids you wouldn’t want to have incredibly good-looking kids that have no common sense,” said Saverys in a Skype interview from Montepulciano, Italy. “I’m fortunate my kids are smart, funny and good looking. But yet [they] were a bit of a challenge. They acted like kids from time to time and made childish mistakes. That’s what parenting is all about. “Sangiovese offers that difficult task. Growing Merlot is a piece of cake; there is no challenge. The easiest path though is not always the most interesting. Just like people, vineyards can get better when they have obstacles to overcome. I like Sangiovese because it is fickle. It provides a challenge I like.” Saverys went all the way with her commitment to Avignonesi. Vineyards are farmed 100 percent biodynamic and organic. While regulations require only 70 percent of a wine be Sangiovese, Saverys changed Avignonesi to 100 percent. The elimination of pesticides and fertilizers was drastic. Saverys needed to only look at neighboring vineyards for proof. “I was skeptical at first,”

Saverys said. “But the soil rewarded us with the change. It really came back to life. There were ladybugs and butterflies everywhere. If you put a spade in the soil so much life comes out. The vineyards that still use chemical sprays look like a lunar landscape. That’s not how nature is supposed to be.” For confirmation the organic and biodynamic transition was effective, Saverys left a small portion treated by chemicals. The vineyard manager instantly knew which block had not been converted because of the lack of life present. The results are stunning. The task has required more work, but like a wellraised child Avignonesi has shown the rewards to be worthwhile.

What to buy Rosso di Montepulciano, 2011, ($17): This is a smooth, easy wine with bright red fruit notes and a vibrant acidity. It is a nice introduction to wines from Montepulciano. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, ($29.99): Beautiful cherry notes and herb spices of thyme and lavender highlight an elegant wine with smooth tannins. Nice acidity and balance allow for it to be enjoyed with a variety of dishes. This is the perfect example of what Sangiovese has to offer.

• James Nokes writes a bi-weekly wine column for Shaw Media. He has been tasting, touring and collecting in the wine world for several years. Contact him at editorial@kcchronicle.com.

SPORTS&REC Eck pushes Saints past Bulldogs By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Before the start of an important three-game Upstate Eight Conference series against Batavia, the St. Charles East baseball team collectively hit the reset button. East came into the series against the Bulldogs having dropped three in a row and was facing a Batavia team playing as well as anyone in the Tri-Cities. East had to sweat out a tense seventh-inning Batavia rally April 22 but held on to take game one of the series, 3-1. “We’ve been very close to having a perfect game, and today we got it,” East coach Len Asquini said. “We’ve been missing something here or there in all of our losses, but today we got it and it was a big time to get it.” “It” turned out to be a couple of timely hits in the early going for East (8-5, 4-3 UEC River) before turning to its pitching to hold on for the win. East pitcher Adam Eck cruised through the first six innings, facing one over the minimum after the first inning before running into trouble in the seventh. Eck fanned Kyle Niemiec to start the seventh but then walked Dino Simoncelli and allowed an opposite-field single to Andrew Siegler. Reagan McReynolds looked to hit Eck’s next pitch off the plate but it was called foul instead. The next Eck offering hit McReynolds in the back to load the bases. Asquini called on reliever Mick Vyzral to finish the job. The junior brandished a nasty curveball, striking out Steven Busby before getting Laren Eustace to ground out to second to end the game. “We were trying hard not to see that guy, especially in

St. Charles East’s Austin Regelbrugge is safe at home April 22 after an attempted put-out by Batavia pitcher Evan Acosta in Batavia that situation,” Asquini said of Eustace, an Indiana recruit. “It happened, we went at it and Mick got the best of him today. Hopefully we can get that tomorrow as well.” Eck worked 6 1/3 innings, permitting just five hits while nearly shutting down Batavia (9-2, 5-1 UEC River) completely to improve to 2-0 on the year. The only blemish came on a Jeremy Schoessling RBI groundout in the third that scored Eustace, who tripled to lead off the inning. After that, Eck allowed just a Niemiec single before running into trouble in the seventh. “I was keeping the curveball low and spotting my fastball inside and outside,” Eck said. “I knew that [the top of the Batavia order] liked to chase curveballs in the dirt. I just tried to keep it outside, especially against Eustace.” Batavia starter Evan Acosta nearly matched Eck, permitting just an earned run in six innings of work. East scored an unearned run in the sec-

The hit turned out to be the game winner. “Acosta pitched really well. That passed ball looked like the goal that [St. Louis Blues goalie Ryan Miller] gave up last night,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “Against a good, solid coached program like Len’s always going to have,

you can’t make mistakes. In a series like this, whoever makes the most mistakes isn’t going to win.” Acosta flirted with danger in the fifth and sixth but pitched out of trouble in both cases. In the fifth, Adam Rojas led off the inning with a single before Acosta threw just wide of first on Mike Settle’s bunt back to the mound. After both runners were sacrificed up a base by Reid Olson, Acosta

struck out Brannon Barry before getting Ben Smith to line out to right to end the inning. In the sixth, Austin Regelbrugge singled to left to lead off the inning but was stranded at second as Acosta got a weak groundout and a flare to right. East added an insurance run in the seventh off reliever Nick Rogalski on an infield single from Smith, scoring Olson, who reached on a throwing error. “Adam Eck was super on the mound today. He was really tough,” Asquini said. “Mick came in a tough situation and kept his composure to get out their best hitter with the bases loaded. I’m really happy for the kids as we had some big atbats and some timely hits.” Smith and Regelbrugge each had a pair of hits for East. Eustace finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Batavia. Acosta took the loss for the Bulldogs, working six innings, permitting just one earned run on six hits while striking out seven.

Aspen trees often grow in colonies, or big groups, of many trees that are attached at the roots. some colonies of aspen trees are thousands of years old.

Walnut trees are deciduous trees with distinctive leaves that turn bright colors in the fall, and they produce walnuts. This is a common tree in the eastern United states.

spruce trees are evergreen, meaning that their needles stay green and bright throughout the winter. in colorado, you will find the blue spruce, which has silvery blue needles.
