When danger strikes Paul Bumba, the emergency preparedness coordinator for the city of St. Charles, said there have been efforts to inform residents about the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and warning, and a tornado watch and warning. A watch means conditions are favorable for a severe thunderstorm or tornado. A warning means that a severe thunderstorm or tornado is occurring, and those in the designated area likely will be in danger. “I think a lot of people have a misconception that they have a little bit more time when they have a warning,” Bumba said. “When a warning is issued, it means they should

St. Charles resident Lorraine Mahoney captures a funnel cloud in Nebraska earlier this month. take shelter right now. … A lot of times they’ll wait for an outdoor warning siren, and then talk to their neighbors and friends to see what is occurring. My suggestion is not to wait.” John Baird, assistant superintendent for operations and buildings at St. Charles School District 303, said the district conducts drills to prepare for the possibility of severe weather. If a warning were to go off, he said, “we go into hold immediately. … When those weather radios tell you to take cover, we are in cover until we are released.” He said such situations have happened in the past few years. The biggest challenge, he said, can be when there is a warning while parents are waiting outside of a school. He said “sometimes, you literally have to go out and get them.” He said the district works with Bumba, as well as the four fire districts that cover the area – St. Charles, Fox River, South Elgin and West Chicago. Elburn resident Brad Hruza, a storm chaser and weather spotter, said when people are at home, the best place to
take shelter is a basement, under the stairs or in an interior room with walls on all sides and no windows. He said it’s important to pay attention to warnings and take shelter. “I have witnessed death, from people not taking warnings seriously, firsthand,” he said, adding that he went to Moore, Okla., and stood in the area where children died at a school. “It was hard to take in.”
Be prepared Dave Gualdoni is an Elburn trustee who works closely with the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team. He also is a weather spotter. Gualdoni suggests residents take CERT classes, which cover what to do during emergencies, because “there’s a chance you can be on your own for a while.” He said people should have weather radios and take advantage of technology that can provide warnings. He said people can look at the radar, and they can have an understanding of what might be headed their way. He said it’s important to have a good plan
– at home and at work – and he suggests that parents know what the policy is at their children’s schools. Among important questions to consider, he said – do you have your finances in order? If you do lose everything, do you have a way to recover titles to houses or cars? Websites, such as www. ready.gov, list suggestions on preparing a safe room. Hruza said people never should take shelter under a highway overpass “as that acts as suction like putting your thumb over a garden hose.” He said to avoid the second floor of a structure, as well as windows. Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said precautions should be taken so that people are not in a vehicle when a tornado strikes. He said there once was a time when people would say a storm was unexpected, “but now you get those weather alerts right to your phone.” He said people should understand that, during a period of crises, they might not be a top priority. For instance, during flooding that occurred last year, he said there were
Mahoney and Hruza both seek out severe storms and have witnessed multiple tornadoes. But they say there still are too many residents who live in the area who become complacent. For example, Mahoney said she’s heard friends in Kane County say the area is too populated to sustain serious tornado damage, but she stressed the area is not bigger than Tuscaloosa, Ala., a city of nearly 100,000 that was hit hard by tornadoes in 2011. “We’ve been lucky so far,” she said. “We’re not going to be lucky forever.” Hruza said the area is “very overdo for a major tornado outbreak.” Bumba said part of the issue is the county covers a lot of area from north to south, and there could be a tornado warning and severe weather in the north part of the county, but no severe weather at all on the same day in the south part of the county. “They’ve been warned before, and nothing has happened,” Bumba said. “And rather than being thankful that nothing has happened, it’s like we’re crying wolf again.” Gengler said he saw a lot of that during the recent winter, with motorists caught in heavy snow despite warnings. He sent out strongly worded warnings on the office’s Facebook page in the hopes that people would take heed and avoid unnecessary travel. Instead, he said “we had quite a few people who were out and about in some of those big snowstorms who really, quite honestly, didn’t need to be there when they got stuck.” “I think some of it is that people say, ‘Oh, it’s a severe thunderstorm warning,’ and nothing happens,” Gengler said. “Until that weather event gets here, you can want to tell people all you want. You truly don’t know what the impact is going to be. … You can’t stick your head in the sand and say it couldn’t happen.”

Lorraine Mahoney travels throughout the Midwest region, seeking out severe storms that could become tornadoes. The St. Charles resident is a storm chaser, and she said she has seen severe weather develop in big cities and rural areas. She said it can get frustrating when those close to her tell her they don’t think a tornado could strike in the Kane County area. “A bunch of friends got really mad,” she said. “I was talking about tornadoes, and they said it would never happen. They think Lake Michigan would spare us.” Severe weather season has arrived, and local experts agree that it is possible that tornadoes could cause damage in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area. Training has taken place, and those involved said it is not wise to ignore tornado warnings or severe thunderstorm warnings. A weather radio is helpful, they said, as are alert systems that send messages directly to a phone, such as the new text alert program recently launched by the Kane County Chronicle, sister paper to The Republicans. According to www.ready. gov, the peak season for tornadoes in northern states is from late spring through early summer.

OVERLOOKED CAUSE OF DRY EYES
Self Service Dog Wash
While there are a number of causes of dry eyes, perhaps the most under-recognized is “blepharitis.” This condition involves inflammation and clogging of the meibomian glands. Located in the eyelids, these glands are responsible for secreting the oily liquid that forms a layer in the tear film that helps prevent the rapid evaporation of the tears. One sign of blepharitis is crusting along the lash line, which can be treated with a diluted soap solution or special lid cleaning products. The application of a warm, wet compress for five minutes or so also helps improve the flow of oil from the glands. If necessary, prescription anti-inflammation eye drops can also be used. P.S. Dry eyes become more common as we age.

arrived with a crowbar and quickly uncovered the sewer, taking care to make as little noise as possible. Ferguson wasted no time laying a blanket on the wet parking lot. Lying on her stomach, she reached into the hole for the ducklings. Within minutes, the 10 ducklings huddled together in
the container. But their mother – who had stayed within sight of the sewer throughout the wait for public works – was nowhere to be seen. Other ducks arrived at the scene, including a female, but it was unclear whether it was the ducklings’ mother. As a test, Ferguson let one of the ducklings loose, and when the

two came together, a second duckling was released. “I say we walk the whole box down to the river so they don’t get run over,” Ferguson said. The presumed momma duck followed community service officer Ryan Beeter – who carried the ducklings – down Indiana Street toward the Fox River but flew away before reaching the bank. Beeter released the ducklings under a deck near the riverfront, where he and others involved in the rescue hoped the animals would be safe. Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services for the St. Charles Parks District, said it is difficult to know whether the ducklings will reunite with their mother. The distance between the sewer and the riverfront could make it difficult, she said, but it is possible the mother was watching the rescue. “I know she’ll be looking for them, and they’ll be looking for her,” Otto said. She said the ducklings’ peeping can only help. “That sound they make is very important to the parent to find the young,” Otto said. While baby ducks need their parents for some protection and to learn how to be a duck, Otto said they aren’t as helpless as other species are after hatching, such as robins. “I think it’s harder on us than it is on them,” Otto said. “We always look at baby animals as being helpless. … Generally the parents and the young know exactly what to do, even though we think they have insurmountable odds.”

minimum height requirement for children to access aquatic amenities, such as the drop and tube slides. This year, that requirement has changed. “There were a lot of kids, whether they were 5 or 6 years old, who didn’t hit that 48-inch mark,” Muenz said. “So, we went back to the slide manufacturers and asked if there couldn’t be some wiggle room.” The solution was to drop the height requirement to between 42 and 48 inches, so long as the child was wearing a Coast Guard-certified life vest, which the Park District provides free of charge. The vests are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Parents are encouraged to provide their own vests, so long as it is Coast Guard-certified. “That actually works out better, because the child will have already been properly fitted for the vest and Mom and Dad know how to correctly put it on their child,” Muenz said. AURORA – More than 1,000 people are expected to participate in the second annual Heroes Mud Run on Saturday, May 24, at Marmion Academy and Abbey Farms in Aurora. The event takes place to raise money for the Heart of a Marine Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Last year’s inaugural Mud Run attracted 900 runners, said Patrick Kackert, event director and a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He said he expects 1,500 to participate in this year’s event. “For a first-year race, we had a great turnout last year,” Kackert said. “Even though the event is new to the area, it continues to grow in popularity.” The event is held on Memorial Day weekend. Kackert said “we thought it would be fitting to have something on Memorial Day weekend to honor heroes past, present and future.” Last year’s event raised close to $10,000 for the Heart

Eric Schelkopf: Tell me about the new studio. Brittnie Quinn: It’s a new 3,400-square-foot building, right in the middle of the business center. It has two big dance rooms, a lobby space, an eating area, homework area and a dressing room area. The lobby has a viewing area to see the kids dancing. It’s a much larger space than what I have right now. It’s a big upgrade. Schelkopf: How long have you been dancing? Quinn: I grew up dancing. My mother owned Palmers School of Dance & Gymnastics in Bloomingdale. From 1980 until 2000, she owned it, and then my uncle bought it in 2000 and still currently owns it. That’s where I grew up dancing and competing. And then when I was 14, I was accepted into the Chicago Academy for the Arts preparatory high school. I’ve been dancing for my entire life, since I could walk. Schelkopf: What kind of satisfaction do you get from dancing? Quinn: It was the best feeling in the world that I was on stage performing, performing for an audience and hearing people applaud. As I got older, I wanted to teach. I loved what my mom did. My sister was a teacher; my grandmother was a teacher;
and my grandfather was a teacher. I loved what they all did and really, really had a passion for it. So, I started assisting and teaching when I was about 15, and then I started actually teaching when I was about 18. I love taking children who have no experience and making them fantastic dancers. That’s what I love to do and what I do best. Kids come through with absolutely no experience and within a year, they’re very, very good technical dancers. I’m a very technique-based studio. I teach the correct techniques. Schelkopf: What are you looking for them to do after they go through your studio? Quinn: Some kids come to me because they just want to make the dance team at their high school. And that’s something I can always deliver on. Some kids come to me because they really want to pursue a career in dance. I have a program that fits for everybody. My mother, Denise Quinn, is starting to run a program at my studio called Dynamic Dancers and it’s for special needs children. So, it’s for children with special needs who still want to dance. She’s been running a special needs program with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association for about 15 years. That’s her specialty. That’s what she does. We also have teen classes for kids who are 13 to 18 years old who don’t have a lot of experience, and we have adult fitness classes. And we have all boys hip hop classes as well. I like to say that we have something for everybody at the studio. Schelkopf: Is that what separates you from other dance studios? Quinn: Absolutely. We have a great variety, and we offer very good technique. You’re always going to get superior technique with us. You’re going to get what you pay for. And I offer smaller classes. I don’t like to have 30 kids in a classroom. I like to max them out at 15 to 20 kids, so every kid is getting personal attention. That’s very important to me. You learn what each kid needs. Schelkopf: Do you have any long-term goals? Quinn: I would love – in the next five to 10 years – to open a second facility. I also would love to run my own competition someday. There are so many different competitions out there, and I would like to run one that is very technique based. And I would just hope to run my studio until I’m too old to walk. I hope to do this forever and ever.

E&S Fish Company quite the catch in St. Charles
A
n unassuming fish market and cafe located in a strip mall on the outskirts of downtown St. Charles may be one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Well, the secret’s out. E&S Fish Company, which gets quite busy at dinner (reservations a must), reels in an onslaught of regulars, who swear by its fresh, deeply flavorful and affordable seafood menu. And did I mention that this seafood charmer is B.Y.O.B.? A cornucopia of fresh fish awaits in a display case along the market-end of the eatery, where you can purchase raw fish and shellfish to-go or, instead, take a seat at one of the cafe’s few arbitrarily-dispersed, rickety tables (which somehow look as though they’ve taken a beating from the oceanic elements), and have the chef create something truly special out of whatever you choose – Chilean sea bass, scallops, jumbo shrimp, salmon, home-made crab cakes, halibut, grouper or mahi-mahi, to name a few. A culinary wizard must be in the kitchen, as far as I’m concerned (just look at the E&S Fish Company Facebook page to get a taste for the caliber of creations leaving that kitchen), and the menu – though small – is inventive, creative and constantly changing to best suit the fish being used in each dish. B.Y.O.B. dinner is served between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Friday and Saturdays. But lunch is a quick and affordable treat – no reservations required. The lunch menu boasts sushi, shrimp quesadillas, fish tacos, salmon burgers, red seafood chowder and seared tuna salad, among other items. Seated at a square, wooden table flanked by a wall of windows, the cafe exudes an understated, East Coast, fishing-village vibe. The staff is pleasant, friendly and happy to serve you. My dining companion and I visited on a Friday for lunch and had the place to ourselves, minus a few regulars stopping in to purchase items from the fish market. With the lunch menu, we were given a lengthy list of sushi options – 32 to be exact. My dining companion and I opted for the Spicy Tuna ($5.75), a six-piece classic roll, and the six-piece House Roll ($8), made with eel, smoked salmon, avocado, cream cheese and

The freshness of each sushi roll was beyond compare. Though I am not normally a fan of eel, the house roll was my favorite.
A slew of seafood sandwiches ($9.95) – served with lettuce, tomato, onion, potato salad, a pickle and choice of garlic or wasabi mayonnaise, tartar sauce or Dijon mustard – lined the menu, along with salads, soups and a “fish entree” ($14.95), that allows diners to choose a fresh fish selection from the display case, which will then be cooked and served with sautéed fresh vegetables, a choice of sweet potato puree or white rice and mango salsa. I ordered the Salmon on Kaiser Roll with garlic mayo, and my dining companion opted for the Shrimp Quesadillas ($9.95). We watched as fish was selected from the display case and then cooked in an extremely small kitchen, in which we could see part of our meal being prepared. Each bite of my sandwich, with the salmon’s perfect sear and an even smattering of garlic mayo melted in my mouth. The succulent sauteed Gulf
shrimp in the quesadillas were tossed with sauteed red and yellow peppers, tomato, onion and corn with melted Jack cheese and a side of mango salsa to temper down the spiciness. Other sandwiches include Seared Tuna on Sourdough, Crab Cake on French Roll, Tilapia on Kaiser Roll and Grouper on French Roll. With an ever-changing menu, E&S will continue to excite and delight with its fierce flavor components and inventive creations. If seafood is what you’re after, E&S Fish Company is quite a catch.

Fabyan Windmill in Geneva; and the Loyalty Day Parade, a Batavia springtime event. The “Loyalty Day Parade” piece was a several-year process to bring to fruition, Freeman said, adding that the process involved snapping hundreds of reference photos, sketching, assembling the images and then, finally, painting. Freeman’s preferred style of painting is realism, which requires an attention to detail. “[Realism] is what I find most rewarding,” he said. “I find a subject that particularly interests me, and I enjoy rendering it in such a way that hopefully I capture the essence of the subject and the thing that originally attracted me.” The detail that went into portraying some of the real people depicted in the “Loyalty Day Parade” painting, ended in a subject recognizing himself after he stumbled upon the work at a pop-up gallery at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles, Freeman said, adding that the man sent him an email saying he was both surprised and flattered. As part of the exhibit, Freeman also will share roughly 30 large-format photographs of vintage neon signs he’s captured throughout his travels across the country. Freeman’s interest in the subject, he said, lies in his affection for graphic design and typography, but also in the transient nature of neon signage. “The fact that they’re going

Further aiding in the preservation of neon signs, Freeman landed a book deal with indie publisher Lake Claremont Press, which will feature images of Chicago’s neon sign heritage. The book, entitled “Good Old Neon,” is due out in September. In an attempt to explore additional uses of Norris’ gallery space, board of directors member Mark Smith said that the “Wine of Life” exhibition will offer multi-dimensional content, including gallery talks and Norris’ first-ever art auction, which will feature pieces from the gallery’s own collection of work. Also featured in the auction will be the exhibition’s featured work, “Sunrise, St. Charles.” “It’s a very interactive way of presenting an art show, where you get several opportunities to meet the artist,” Smith said. Freeman will kick off informal gallery talks Friday evenings in June. The gallery talks, which are free and
open to the public (donations accepted), will begin at 6 p.m. and include refreshments and live music, with presentations beginning at 7 p.m. The first gallery talk – “Gallery Walk” – on Friday, June 6, will include a stroll through the exhibition led by Freeman, who will share anecdotes, inspirations and ideas behind his work. The “Good Old Neon” presentation will take place Friday, June 13; and “Inside the Studio: Paintings Step by Step” will take place Friday, June 20. The fundraising reception and auction sale of select
paintings and photos will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 27. The event also will include a silent auction of donated products and services from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the live auction. Food and beverages will be served. Tickets, which are available at www.norrisculturalarts.com, will cost $40 a person or $75 a couple. Net sales will benefit the Norris Center. ineteenth-century novelist Jean Paul Richter once said that, “Art is indeed not the bread but the wine of life.” Bringing the German-Romantic writer’s words to life is local artist Nick Freeman, whose photographs and paintings of Fox Valley landscapes and scenes of everyday life will be featured in an 80-piece solo exhibition, entitled “The Wine of Life.” Beginning with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, the exhibition will run through Saturday, July 5, at the Norris Cultural Arts Center gallery in St. Charles. “It’s every artist’s dream to have a one-man show,” said Freeman, who had a career in advertising before exclusively focusing his time on art a couple of years ago. “It’s a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to show the full array of my work in one place at one time.” A St. Charles resident and proponent of the Fox Valley area, Freeman paints scenes of everyday life set amidst the backdrop of the Fox River and its surrounding communities. “The region isn’t necessarily known for its dramatic terrain, but the Fox River has always been a draw for me,” Freeman said. “… I think that people are so used to seeing their smalltown surroundings that they don’t often take a view of them … but when they’re put in the context of a painting, they kind of look at it with a fresh eye.” The featured work of “Wine of Life” – an exhibition title chosen because of Freeman’s affinity for Richter’s quote, as well as its ability to capture the essence of how art relates to life, he said – will be “Sunrise, St. Charles,” a 29”-by-40” oil painting on canvas depicting the western banks of the Fox River in early-morning light. Other local landscapes featured in Freeman’s paintings include Corfu Restaurant, Blue Goose Market and the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles; the

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva seniors Annie Waldoch, Molly Stanfa and Tory Herbst didn’t forget how to play soccer after forgoing the club season leading up to their senior seasons. Still, the girls didn’t take the decision lightly, not after long-standing commitment to club soccer since early in their elementary school days. The trio sought out creative ways to stay involved with soccer leading up to this spring and continue to serve as key pillars for Geneva, which opened postseason play May 20 in an IHSA Class 3A Geneva Regional semifinal against Elk Grove. “It’s something we’ve been doing our whole lives,” Waldoch said of club soccer. “One season, and not even a season off, but a season off club after playing club for 10 years, I don’t think it makes that much of a difference because we know how to push ourselves, and we also had that extra push from the side, too.” The girls stuck together and took an open-minded approach to their offseasons, even following up on a lead from Herbst’s mother, Michelle, and joining a women’s league in the Naperville area in which most of the competitors were well into their 20s or older. “It was a different feel,” Herbst said. “There weren’t practices and we didn’t really know any of the women, but it was good to go out there. It was just kind of a slower pace. It was different, but it was a good experience.” The players also enlisted training support from former Geneva standout Jackie Santacaterina, who went on to play professionally with the Chicago Red Stars. A player of Santacaterina’s caliber had the

girls’ full attention. “Not having a club coach pushing us, we had somebody else pushing us to stay in shape and keep our touches up and stay focused in the offseason,” Stanfa said. Alongside fellow Geneva senior Courtney Lardas, Waldoch, Stanfa and Herbst even parlayed their extensive soccer connections to linking up with a team based out of Alaska for an out-of-state tournament. Playing club soccer year in, year out is the norm for most
of the area’s top players, but Waldoch said it felt like time for a less structured approach. “Molly is playing college (at Loras) but Tory and I aren’t, and club is always very expensive and we’ve been playing it since we were 8 years old,” Waldoch said. “We knew whatever we would do besides club, we wanted to do it together and keep playing together.” All three are strong defensive presences and four-year varsity players for a seasoned Vikings team with five four-
year stalwarts, Michaela Loebel and Hope Goodman being the others. Maggie Bodine and Lardas are three-year varsity players, and Geneva has 11 seniors overall. It’s a level of experience – and talent – which allowed the Vikings (13-5-2, as of May 20) to earn the No. 3 seed in the 18team Conant Sectional. Geneva coach Megan Owens said she’ll have “craters,” not holes, to fill next year. “It’s really going to be hard to say goodbye to this
group,” Owens said. But the Vikings hope to delay that parting for quite a while. Herbst and company feel prepared to do their part, standing by the offseason work they put in to gear up for their senior years. “I think this is going to be the year to do it,” Herbst said. “We’re excited. I think the people who have been on here three, four years, this is the time we feel we’re the core of the team, and we can really step up and show ourselves.”

Often on Memorial Day, you will see many flags out on homes and businesses, and in cemeteries and on gravestones of those who have served their country. Have you ever wondered what the stars and stripes of the U.S. flag means? Take a look at the picture for some details.
it is not known exactly why the red, white and blue were chosen, but some people think the colors were taken from the Union Jack flag of England.
The stars are white, behind the stars is blue, and the stripes alternate red and white, beginning with red at the top. When the Continental Congress created a seal for the United States, the colors were described by Charles Thompson, secretary of the Continental Congress, in this way: “White signifies purity and innocence, red, hardiness and valour, and blue ... signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.”
The 13 red and white stripes are for the 13 original colonies. The flag features 50 stars, one for each of the 50 states.
