Visitors to Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday watch 3-month-old Berkshire hogs during the 28th rare breeds show. Ashley Sloboda asloboda @shawmedia.com

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A fistful of grass was all it took for 6-year-old Elizabeth McLaughlin to get the ox’s attention. Teasing the Devon ox, the St. Charles girl kept the justplucked blades out of the animal’s reach for a few moments, swiftly moving the tuft up and down, left and right before finally letting the ox feed on the vegetation – only to repeat the game again. Elizabeth interacted with the ox and other farm animals last month during Garfield Farm Museum’s 28th rare breeds show. Her father, Jason McLaughlin, said this was the first year the family attended the event. Elizabeth wants to be a veterinarian, he said, adding she brought a sketch pad with her so she could draw the animals. “She’s definitely enjoying it,” he said. In addition to letting visitors get up close to such animals as turkeys, horses, sheep and rabbits, the Campton Hills event featured tours of the 1846

black piglet and a Katahdin ewe named Cinnamon. “This is really the only show we do,” Emilie said, describing her family’s operation as a hobby farm. “It’s a lot of fun.” Elsewhere on the farm, groups gathered to watch two 3-month-old Berkshire hogs in their muddy enclosure. Museum volunteer Jamie Rothstein plucked two bunches of grasses and, although she tossed them in different spots, the hogs soon became competitors. “They’re fighting because they both want the same blade of grass,” Rothstein said. The animals that live at Garfield Farm – hogs, oxen, sheep, geese, chickens and turkeys – are all of breeds that the settlers would have had in the 1840s, Rothstein said. City Council approves new police chief ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on June 2 unanimously approved a city leader’s recommendation to appoint James T. Keegan as the new police chief. The council voted 10-0 in favor of City Administrator Mark Koenen’s recommendation to appoint Keegan, who was selected from a pool of 75 applicants. Keegan thanked the council and city for their support after the vote, stopping to shake the hands of all 10 aldermen. “I promise you I’ll do the best job I can,” Keegan said to the council. He said it was a difficult decision to leave his current post as chief of the Streamwood Police Department, but decided to come to St. Charles because of the community’s rich history and quality programming. Keegan said he currently lives in St. Charles Township and his two children attend St. Charles District 303 schools. Keegan has worked for the Streamwood Police Department for the past 21 years and has served as police chief since 2011.

CATARACTS AT BIRTH While cataracts (clouding of the eye lens) are primarily associated with older adults, they are also found, or soon develop, in about 0.4% of newborns. “Congenital cataracts” do not necessarily need to be surgically removed. Very small cataracts and those that are positioned on the periphery of the eye lens may not sufficiently hamper vision to the point where immediate treatment is required. If not, postponing treatment until after normal growth and development occur avoids potential complications such as secondary glaucoma. However, if cataract surgery is indicated, it is usually performed between six weeks and three months of age. Surgery may include implantation of a replacement lens or fitting with glasses or contact lenses. P.S. Congenital cataracts may occur due to inherited tendencies, infection, metabolic problems, diabetes, trauma, inflammation, or drugs (such as tetracycline taken by pregnant mothers).

In both the Junior Farm Camp, a half-day session for 5to 8-year-olds, and the Summer Farm Camp, an all-day session for 9- to 12-year-olds, campers will be spending a lot of time with the farm’s many animals, according to Bunke. Kids – How are you going to keep them down on the farm, once they’ve seen MTV? Not to mention Game Boys, movies on demand and 24-hour sports programming? With the St. Charles Park District’s summer camp programs at Primrose Farm Park, the question might just be how are you going to keep kids away from the farm once they’ve seen vintage threshing machines, milked a cow and made their own ice cream? It’s all part of a day spent in the unique surroundings of a historic, 1930s-era working farm. Campers will feel like they’ve been transported back in time as they perform such bygone chores as egg collecting, feeding livestock and spinning cloth. They’ll wander in and out of the vintage barn, summer kitchen, demonstration plots and discovery trails as they learn such skills as how to milk a cow by hand, practice the forceful art of blacksmithing or make their own butter and ice cream. There are a number of Primrose Farm summer camp options for kids ages 5 to 12. Some are one-day camps scheduled for every Friday from June 20 to Aug. 1. Others run Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-June to the end of July, and there’s one weeklong session during the first week in August that brings it all together. The Friday camp session, Time Travelers, takes chil-

The final camp session, called Down on the Farm, is a week-long recap of the kinds of things covered in both the junior and summer two-day sessions but spread out over five days so campers get to experience both the farm environment, as well as visit other park district facilities, such as the pool and minigolf course. “With all of our camps, the kids get a good workout. We send them home really tired,” Bunke said. They also are sent home with important life lessons and a chance to see something before it disappears from

Huffman was lauded for his work by 3rd Ward Alderman Bill Turner and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina. “You’ve done a great job – you are a wonderful asset to our police department,” Rogina said. Keegan’s first official work day with St. Charles will be Monday, June 30, and he will be sworn in Monday, July 7, Koenen said. American culture. “It is becoming increasingly rare for people to have any connection to agriculture at home,” said Bunke. “When the country was founded, 98 percent of Americans lived and worked on farms. By the start of World War II, it was down to 40 percent, and today it’s down to less than 2 percent, so there is so little connection now. This is that chance for kids to get exposed to big animals, to learn where their food comes from and do it in a safe environment and user-friendly place. They get a good view of what life was like for people, even just a generation or two ago.” For parents interested in teaching their children such life lessons about where our food comes from and how this area was developed agriculturally, Primrose Farm summer camps provide an invigorating and active insight into a rapidly-disappearing way of life. A malfunctioning water storage tank at the Prairie State Energy Campus near Marissa in downstate Illinois will not affect power availability, the company said this past month in a news release. It includes the electric utilities of Batavia and Geneva, which are among 300 communities invested in the coal-fired power plant. According to a statement from the power plant, when one of its two 800-megawatt units was taken offline for a scheduled maintenance outage, a water storage tank overflowed. This caused “an unexpectedly high release of steam and water that damaged the siding and associated equipment.” “There was no explosion, no fire and no injuries that occurred,” spokeswoman Ashlie Kuehn said. The plant uses water to make the steam which turns its turbines to make electricity, she said. The steam and water release damaged the siding and equipment, she said. “The power plant has some very key components, and two components that make power are the boiler and turbine generator, and they were not damaged,” Kuehn said. “The storage tank needs to be repaired and the siding, and we expect those to be competed by mid to late June when the [second] unit is going to be returned to service.” Once repairs are completed, Unit 2 is expected to be returned to service, so it will produce power for most of the summer, according to the company’s statement. Geneva is a member of – and has a contract with – Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency for an entitlement share of 35 megawatts in Prairie State Generating Company which owns Prairie State Energy Campus, a coal-fired downstate power plant. Batavia also is a member of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency and is in a longterm contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he’s unaware of any impact the incident might have on supply or costs to the city.

executive director Sandy Buchanan said in a statement. “That investigation should take place in a transparent manner so that everyone concerned about the plant can learn as much as possible as soon as possible.” Kuehn said officials still are in the process of assessing what caused the tank to overflow and release steam. “There was no explosion,” Kuehn said, countering Buchanan’s comments. “There was a release of steam and water.” The cities’ investments in Prairie State Energy Campus have come under fire by the Sierra Club and local citizens.

“There could be, but I’m not aware of any at the moment,” Schielke said. “I’ve seen some pictures online of siding blown off some of the buildings there but nothing that would a have major impact here.” Geneva officials were unavailable for comment. The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis in Cleveland, which conducts research and analyses on financial and economic energy and environment issues, called for an “exhaustive investigation.” “There needs to be an exhaustive investigation into the cause of the explosion and into safety procedures at the plant,”

In a meeting earlier this year, Jeffers presented data on the number of heroin-related deaths in Kane County since 2009. At seven such deaths, 2010 recorded the lowest number. The peak was recorded in 2012 with 26 deaths. The deaths have occurred throughout the county, including in St. Charles, North Aurora, Geneva, Batavia and Elburn.

Although emergency medical technicians already administer Narcan, Jeffers said, the new program targets police because they typically arrive on the scene quicker. Medics, however, still would be called, she said. Jeffers said Kane County sheriff’s officers already administer the medication. The Illinois Department of Human Services Division of

Alcohol and Substance Abuse certifies the trainers, Jeffers said. She said the county health department will provide the training and management of the Narcan program. Officers will be allowed to carry only two doses of the medication at a time, Jeffers said. Because of the way the program is set up, she said, the health department will be able to track the data.

“We want this process to be as representative as it can be,” said Michael Isaacson, the Kane County Health Department assistant director for community health, in addressing the more than 100 people who attended the May 29 kickoff session at the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva. The previous Kane County Community Health Assessment was done in 2011. The report revealed the top six threats to community health in Kane County were obesity; chronic disease, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer; infant mortality, childhood lead poisoning; commu-

nicable disease; and poor social and emotional wellness. Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, was at the session. He pointed to the growing heroin use in the area as a problem. “It will take groups like this to get a grasp on it,” Gengler said. Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said he thought it was good to get agencies together to talk about different issues. “We probably share a lot of the same issues,” Banker said. Laurie Call, director of the Illinois Public Health Institute’s Center for Community Capacity Development, told attendees public health is a

shared responsibility. “It is not just the responsibility of health care providers to improve health,” Call said. “Everyone has a unique contribution.” The IDPH is helping Kane County Health Department do a new health assessment of the county. As part of the process, there will be community focus groups, as well as a phone survey, Call said. “We are trying to find out, how healthy are our residents,” Call said. GENEVA – Eighteen samesex couples sought marriage licenses June 2 in Kane County, the first day the clerk’s office was open to accept them under a new Illinois law. Fifteen were in civil unions who filed for conversions to marriages. Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said his office did not charge a fee for the conversions. Three same-sex couples came in for marriage licenses, and one heterosexual couple with a civil union also converted the union to a marriage license, Cunningham said. “We have only had a little over 200 civil unions, less than 10 percent of the population,” Cunningham said. “We handle this like any other license.” Cunningham said he expected a few more to come in the night of June 4, when his office is open until 7 p.m. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act on Nov. 20, 2013, making Illinois the 16th state in the nation to accept full marriage equality. The law officially went into effect June 1, allowing every couple in Illinois, regardless of gender, equal access to the status, benefits, protections, rights and responsibilities of marriage, according to a statement released by the governor June 1.

GENEVA – One additional Democrat filed for the Nov. 4 general election ballot by the deadline, which was June 2, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said. Martha Hanna of the 200 block of Evergreen Drive, Batavia, filed to run in the Kane County Board race for the 11th District. She will run against John Martin of Geneva, who won the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary.

Hanna lost to County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, in 2012. Donahue said he would not seek re-election this year. Because no Democrat or third-party candidate filed to run for county clerk, Cunningham will seek a fourth term unopposed. Mark Guethle, chairman of the Kane County Democratic Central Committee, said he tried to slate a candidate to run against Cunningham, but he could not find one who was willing. “I worked it, but nobody

wanted to run,” Guethle said. “It’s hard to get someone to run countywide. It’s hard to get people to run for office. They do not want to do it or they do not have the time. ... I tried. It was not for lack of effort.” Guethle said Democrats were represented in other races. “We have Democrats for County Board up for re-election,” Guethle said. “We have a sheriff candidate, two congressional candidates and candidates for statewide races.”

Walk-a-thon raises nearly $5K for Batavia family By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The May 31 turnout at a Batavia family walk-a-thon benefit put a smile on Danielle Burciaga’s face. There were more than 100 people on or near the Rotolo Middle School outdoor track one hour into the event. Members of the Batavia Fire Department also showed up to help cool down the runners by setting up one of their fire hoses. The walk-a-thon raised $4,878, which was within range of Burciaga’s initial $5,000 goal. She said there were generous donors who far surpassed the $10 a person entry fee. “I was just trying to do something nice for somebody,” said Burciaga, a Cortland resident. “In the end, it was all worth it for me.” Burciaga, an Illinois Central School Bus driver, organized the three-mile walka-thon for Batavian Mike Hubert and his family. Hubert was diagnosed in 2010 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph

tissue. He recently completed his second stem cell transplant and was expected to possibly come home soon from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, his wife Kelli said. Burciaga has gotten to know the Huberts through driving their three children – Jack, 12, and 6-year-old twins Lucas and Kasey – to school at different times. She would see Mike Hubert at the bus stop every morning and found out about his diagnosis after she commented about his appearance one day. Kelli Hubert has been taking care of her three sons and the family expenses while her husband recovers. Burciaga took it upon herself to help with efforts to support the family, including handing out fliers at the Batavia Fire Department and various other locations. Even so, she refuses to take all the credit. The people who came on May 31 made the event a success, Burciaga said. That included Kevin Patrick, one of the Huberts’ next-door neighbors. Patrick’s son Brandon

mows the Huberts’ lawn, so it’s one less thing they have to worry about. He said the Huberts are a compassionate family. “They’re always willing to help, and it’s nice that we can return something,” Kevin Patrick said. Scott Nelson of Arlington Heights reached out to a supplier of his employer to have sports apparel and other items donated for the walk-a-thon raffle. He and Mark Sullivan, also of Arlington Heights, were at the May 31 event because they have known Mike Hubert since they were in third grade. Nelson was impressed by Burciaga’s efforts, especially since she sees the family for only a few minutes each day but cares so much. Perhaps the most impressed and grateful person of all was Kelli Hubert, who fought back tears May 31 as she called Burciaga an angel for helping her family. “She’s not a close friend, but she saw a potential need and reached out,” Kelli Hubert said.

von Dale guitarist Matt McCarter hopes to see some friendly faces in the crowd when his band plays at Kiss The Sky record store in Batavia later this month. McCarter, 24, who now lives in Memphis, Tenn., was born and raised in Batavia and is a 2008 Batavia High School graduate. Avon Dale will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at Kiss The Sky, 180 W. First St., Batavia, as part of the store’s “Live From Kiss The Sky” music series. More information is available by visiting Kiss The Sky’s website, www. kissthesky.net. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to McCarter about the band and the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: You must be pretty excited about the upcoming show. Matt McCarter: We’re very excited to return to Batavia, not only to see friends and family, but it will be great to come back home and kind of take what we developed down in Memphis and bring it back up to Batavia. Schelkopf: You guys have a busy summer. Your summer tour goes from Thursday, June 12, until Thursday, July 24. Is that where you guys love to be, on the road? McCarter: Since I teach full time and our drummer also teaches full time, we really haven’t had the opportunity to do that long stretch on the road. So this will be the first time that we really have that good chunk of time off. We’re really excited. We haven’t really done anything like it, so it’s a big step for the band.

The band Avon Dale, featuring Alec Heist (from left), Conrad Polz, Batavia native Matt McCarter and Andrew Allen (not pictured), will perform its blend of rock, blues and soul music Sunday, June 29, at Kiss The Sky record store in Batavia. learn guitar and songwriting. I was an athlete all through high school and at the University of Illinois, I was on the wrestling team, and that’s where I met Conrad.

Schelkopf: I understand Avon Dale formed while you were attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. McCarter: It started as a collaboration between Conrad Polz and I, the other guitarist in the band. I spent some time at my lake house for a summer, and I recorded an acoustic demo and brought it back to school. Alec Heist (our drummer), was in the teaching program with me and he had heard it, and that’s what kind of got him to bring down his drums. Schelkopf: And I understand that none of you actually read music. McCarter: It’s all through our own. Conrad and I kind of helped each other

Schelkopf: I understand the band is named after the street where you and Conrad first started writing songs. McCarter: Conrad’s parents had owned a house on Avondale Avenue, just off campus. That’s where we first started writing songs, on Conrad’s roof. Schelkopf: You guys kind of dip into different genres – rock, blues, soul. Who are some of your musical inspirations? McCarter: We draw from several different inspirations. I know Alec is a big Dave Matthews fan. Conrad and myself draw from various influences, people like Van Morrison and maybe a little bit of Kings of Leon, as well. Schelkopf: You have added a fourth member, Andrew Allen, on bass. McCarter: That was a component we

thought we were always missing. He hopped right in, and has really enjoyed it. Schelkopf: You’ve recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, where many famous bands have cut records over the years, including Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes. Did you feel a vibe when you were there? McCarter: When you walk in there, everything just looks very retro. When we were in that studio, yeah, you could feel it. When you are walking to the studio, you are walking by all the platinum records on the walls. You can really feel the history in the place. It was a surreal feeling being in there. Once we come back from the tour, we plan to record some new material with Mike Wilson of Ardent Studios. We plan to do an EP of some of our songs, and then plan to do a full-length album. Schelkopf: What is the chemistry like in the band? McCarter: Everyone is determined. There’s a lot of determination and hard work in the band.

(None of which we had the pleasure of ordering.) Instead, we ordered Bien Trucha’s namesake tacos ($11), the Pastor tacos ($10) and Pollo tacos ($10). To accompany the tacos, the Mexican enclave also serve Cazuelitas and Tortas (lunch only), soup and salad, Brochetas (dinner only) and side dishes, such as Esquites ($5). The Bien Trucha tacos (a table favorite) were served on a wood plank with a healthy layer of grilled skirt steak, chorizo, an oozing topping of melted chihuahua cheese and a smattering of roasted tomatillo salsa to set everything off. The Pastor tacos were served with a healthy amount of ancho-guajillo marinated pork, cilantro, onion, a sliver of pineapple and morita salsa. The sweet acid-

ity from the pineapple balanced the savory, marinated pork. The Pollo provided a slightly different take on the taco. The tortillas were crispy, and rolled with shredded chicken breast and potato hash with layers of crema, queso and a generous smattering of morita-serrano salsa poured over the top. I’ve tried Esquites in many Mexican restaurants and I think Bien Trucha does it best. The grilled corn with melted epazote-butter, lemon-aioli, queso cotija and chile piquin create a semblance of flavors and textures that sing on the palate. All of the drinks being shaken, poured and stirred behind the bar are equally as inventive and fresh as the food. A plethora of margarita options line the menu and all are created using fresh fruit and juices. For a special treat, try the Ahuacatl ($11) – an avocado margarita made with agave nectar, lime, exotico blanco, orange liquor and mezcal mist. Bien Trucha has created a well-respected name for itself; its reputation stretching across Kane County borders and standing strong among the best in Chicago’s fickle foodie scene.

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles, The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles and Downtown St. Charles Partnership Public Art Committee dedicated the “If I Could But Fly” sculpture May 30 in memory of the late Bob Leonard, who was one of the visionaries behind the Fox River becoming a major asset of the community, states a news release. The sculpture was revealed at a dedication ceremony that took place on the Bob Leonard walkway along the west side of the Fox River between Illinois and Prairie streets. The evening event was led by Diana Brown, the chairperson of the public art committee, who gave introductory comments before introducing St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina; the sculpture’s artist, Bob Wilfong; and John Rabchuk, the vice president of the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles. Pete Leonard, Bob Leonard’s son, led the attendees in 10 toasts in memory of the organizations that supported the purchase of the sculpture. Bob Leonard, who served as the chairman of the River Corridor Committee in St. Charles and former mayor of North Aurora, died in 2006 at the age of 74.

GENEVA – You may have recognized it by the lengthy single-file line often sprouting from its understated entrance, or the youthful, margarita-induced buzz emanating from its intimate patio area. Soldiering passed other Mexican eateries as one of the finest – according to some critics – not only in the Kane County area but Chicago, as well, is Bien Trucha. Bien Trucha, which aptly means to be on top of your game, is ranked No. 1 on a list of Zagat’s top 50 Mexican restaurants in the Chicago area; recently made Thrillist. com’s list of 12 Best Illinois Restaurants Not in Chicago; received rave reviews from TV’s “Check Please!” roundtable; and its Pescadillas – shredded swordfish hardshell tacos with avocado-habanero pico de gallo and epazote – landed on Chicago food critics Phil Vettel and Kevin Pang’s list of favorite dishes of 2013. And, perhaps most importantly, it was voted the No. 1 Mexican Restaurant in the 2014 Kane County Chronicle “Best of the Fox” Readers Choice Awards. If those aren’t enough well-respected opinions to get you through the door, then I don’t think anything I have to say will make you go either. The line may be a deterrent (the restaurant does not take reservations) but A Toda Madre, which is conveniently situated right next door, serves food off of the same menu, and takes limited reservations, providing ample opportunity for more people to sample the various creations coming out of Bien Trucha’s kitchen. My dining companion and I visited on a weekday night around 5 p.m. (no line, but busy) and took seats at a communal table on the outdoor patio right away. My dining companion commented afterward that “the al fresco dining on such a beautiful day was only enhanced by the friendly staff ... and the festive music wafting over us.” The menu is tapas-style, and diners are encouraged to share plates to be able to sample more fare. Chips and bean dip were set upon the table, so we could nibble while making mutual menu selections. To start, we opted for the Ceviche Del Mes ($10), the restaurant’s monthly ceviche special. The colorful dish came with shrimp, strawberries and cucumbers in a zesty lime sauce. The lime was slightly overpowering, but all of the ingredients tasted fresh and blended nicely. The vast array of tacos lining the menu will make the decision-making process very difficult. Literally, every taco dish sounded delectable: The a la Diabla comes with sautéed shrimp, butter-mojo de ajo, chipotle lime and an avocado slice; the Barriga de Puerco with slow-roasted pork

SPORTS&REC Saints success leads to state berth By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ROSELLE – It doesn’t take a history buff to know Fighting Saints soccer is drenched in tradition. England native Paul Jennison – who coaches East’s girls and boys programs – was far removed from Norris Stadium as the Saints’ girls program ruled the state shortly before St. Charles High split, winning five successive state championships under former coach Joe Moreau between 1996 and 2000. Consider those echoes officially awakened after the Saints plowed past Huntley 2-0 in the June 3 IHSA Class 3A Lake Park supersectional. The Saints are headed for the state semifinals for the first time as St. Charles East. They’ll play Lincoln-Way North at 5 p.m. Friday, June 6, at North Central College in Naperville. “You can’t help but know, working in this school, how this program used to be,” Jennison said. “It was an extreme honor for me when I got the opportunity to take both [the boys and girls programs], and there was no doubt in my mind that my goal was to get the program back to where it was. “I’m not saying that just by getting to the final four that we’re there, but I think we’re on the right track. It also helps that this group of girls is as hardworking, motivated, selfless and driven as they are because you can’t do it alone.” East (18-4-5) and Huntley (19-7) were scoreless at halftime despite the Saints mostly controlling possession. Senior Rion Gaffney gave East a 1-0 lead with 28:08 to play in the second half, and from there, the odds swung mightily in the Saints’ favor. All 19 of Huntley’s wins this season came via shutouts.

that you get to show what you can do, moments that you get to really just prove you have the heart and desire to be successful,” Jennison said. “When that ball is scrambling around there in a supersectional game, somebody’s got to throw themselves on the end of it. Rion was the first one to do that. That can be the difference between a career being over and continuing.” East midfielder Kelli Santo Paulo hit the crossbar less than two minutes after East went ahead, but her frustration didn’t linger long. Santo Paulo’s picturesque cross set up junior forward Darcy Cunningham for a header score, making it 2-0 Saints with 13:10 to play, allowing East goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan (four saves) and the Saints’ defense to relax a bit. Huntley coach Kris Grander cited East’s midfield dominance as the biggest difference between the teams, saying the Red Raiders changed formations as a concession to the play of Saints midfielders such as Hilton, Santo Paulo and Anna Corirosi. “Their defense is good, but their defense comes from the midfield,” Grabner said. “That [Hilton], man, she’s a special player, and she’s surrounded by good players. That was tough.” East was solid throughout Sarah Nader – snader@shawmedia.com St. Charles East’s Claire Rasmussen (left) and Huntley’s Jenna Hermansen battle for control of the ball the season, but the Saints seem June 3 during the first half of the Class 3A Lake Park Supersectional in Roselle. 4) Draw with chalk You can play games like hopscotch. You can send secret, coded messages to your neighbors. You can practice your drawing and art skills. Or, you can simply write your name. However you choose to use it, sidewalk chalk is a good way to graiti your driveway and not have it be permanent.

5) play a classic game in the yard Tag, hide and go seek, capture the flag – when all else fails in the summer, grab some pals and pull out one of these classics.

1) Climb a tree, or the monkey bars Your parents most likely climbed trees when they were kids, and your grandparents probably did, too. There’s a good reason – it’s fun, and just a little bit dangerous. OK, don’t climb a really big tree that will scare your neighbors when they see you up there, but climb one that looks relatively safe and check with your parents before you scamper up there. Or go climb the monkey bars at the park instead!

There are many ways to have fun in the great outdoors this summer, and they don’t all have to be organized sports. Sure, it’s fun to play a game of soccer or baseball with your friends, but if you don’t have enough people to ield a team, don’t let it stop you from enjoying the summer sunshine and fresh air. Here are ive classic ways to get outdoors this summer.

Get moving!

If you don’t have a playground nearby, don’t fret – just use your imagination. Get an adult to help you attach an old tire to a sturdy tree branch with a rope and make a swing. Or recycle some wood to build a treehouse. Whatever it is, be safe while you’re doing these kinds of projects, and let the sky be the limit.
