Through its Adult Activity Center, the St. Charles Park District offers a variety of activities, including mah jongg, disc golf, bocce ball, line dancing, pinochle and book discussions.
Getting older, getting better – twin goals of park district’s Adult Activity Center By CAROL HAGGAS stcharlesrepublican@shawmedia.com The numbers speak for themselves – one building; 80 hours of programs, trips and activities each week; more than 600 members whose demographic spreads from age 50 to 100; all for a membership fee of only $10 a year. Housed within the Pottawatomie Community Center, the Adult Activity Center does put the emphasis on activity. From disc golf to bocce ball, table tennis to line dancing, pinochle to mah jongg, quilting to book discussions, there is sure to be a daily drop-in happening to appeal to everyone – from new empty nesters and recent retirees to senior citizens who want both to stay active and become actively involved in a social community. “We provide recreation and leisure activities for individuals age 50 and older,” said Meghan Papke, adult activities supervisor. Focusing on alert minds, healthy bodies and energized spirits, the AAC offers a variety of meaningful programs that can be as simply relaxing
as a good old-fashioned game of bingo or as intellectually stimulating as learning a new computer skill. They can be as low key as a potluck picnic on the grounds of Pottawatomie Park or as far-reaching as a motor coach trip to one of Wisconsin’s most popular tourist attractions. “We try to provide a mix of activities that have both the comfort of familiarity and the challenge of variety,” Papke said. Along with its daily calendar of drop-in activities that are open to all regular members on a limitless basis, the AAC also offers three dedicated programming rooms that members also can avail themselves of as often as they’d like. A computer/
media lounge houses six computer terminals and a large screen TV, making it a great place to check email, use the Internet for research or watch a recently released movie. The adjacent card room is a great place for the kind of socialization that naturally springs from game playing, from traditional card games to those that use newer technology, like the Wii gaming systems. And there almost always is a pool game going on in the nearby billiards room. Along with these daily drop-in activities, the AAC also sponsors regular monthly activities that have become favorite events with its members. Taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month, potluck parties are great opportunities for socialization and fellowship, Papke said. Inspired by a central theme, the main entrée for the afternoon meal is provided by the St. Charles Park District – everything from a barbecued pulled pork picnic in the summer to a heartwarming stew in the winter. Registered guests sign up to bring a side
dish or dessert – a great way to try out a new recipe or show off an old favorite. Special event programming often can focus on important wellness issues, such as medication identification and storage, creating a safe home environment, and understanding and managing insurance benefits. Those interested in the arts and history will find excursions for lectures and exhibits at Chicago’s Art Institute or history museum stimulating, while guided field trips to the Morton Arboretum and participation in the AAC monthly walking club give nature lovers something to crow about. Staying active and engaged in a community lifestyle can mean the difference between aging successfully and aging prematurely. “These programs bring a level of enthusiasm and appreciation when people start realizing what possibilities are available,” Papke said. For information on the St. Charles Park District’s Adult Activity Center, call Meghan Papke at 630-513-4324 or visit stcparks.org.

Class teaches weaving for blind or visually impaired By BRENDA SCHORY ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Five women weavers pulled their shuttles through the space – known as the shed – pulling through threads of colors such as peacock blue, silver gray and poppy red. After the threads are pulled through, there was a thump, as the loom beated in the new row. This is how weavers create scarves, place mats, wall hangings, shawls and purses. But these weavers consult patterns and find colors marked in Braille as they are all either blind or visually impaired. Earlier this month, it was the sixth year they have gathered for their Weaving for the Blind and Visually Imparied class at the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles Township. Usually, it’s six women, but one was out sick this year. All are teachers or retired teachers. The inspiration for the class, taught by Heather Winslow of Sugar Grove, was Linn Sorge, 62, of DeKalb. Blind since birth, Sorge already was very accomplished as a full-time teacher at the Hadley School for the Blind, teaching adaptive technology and music courses online to people
“They see with touch as a sense for seeing, and I had to come up with ways they can use that sense to understand what I am trying to get across.” Heather Winslow Class teacher all over the world. But Sorge said she always wanted to weave. “And not just back and forth with a treadle and shuttle,” Sorge said. “I wanted to do everything – start to finish. I wanted to take a big cone of yarn and turn it into fabric every step of the way.” And so it began, first with Sorge taking weaving lessons from Denise Kavanagh, founder of Fine Line, who died of cancer in 2002. Then Winslow took on the weaving classes, including teaching Sorge. “It was wonderful working with her,” Sorge said of Winslow. “After we had been doing this a while, my friends were envious about this. I asked her if she would be willing to try
to teach them a couple things in a summer class. She said, ‘If you will be there, I will.’ “ And so it continued. “That was probably the hardest thing for me to do,” Winslow said. “I have no training in working with visually impaired or blind people. And so what I found the most difficult is to figure out was ways of verbalizing concepts or skills that they had to do. How do you teach somebody to tie a square knot if they can’t see what you are doing?” Winslow adapted the class, verbalizing the instructions she could not demonstrate. “I had to come up with ways for them to see with their fingers. They see with touch as a sense for seeing, and I had to come up with ways they can use that sense to understand what I am trying to get across,” Winslow said. Winslow found that her blind and visually impaired students have exquisite memory skills for verbal instructions. “They are very sharp,” Winslow said. “And since the majority are blind from birth, they are used to listening – and actually listening – as to a sighted person who is not listening as well. They concentrate on listening.”
For the weavers, who are blind since birth or not long after, a color class explaining what colors go together, and which are complimentary, took the mystery out of how to choose colors. “I have no clue of colors,” Sorge said. “I will never know what blue really is. But ... I can understand that blue goes with this and not with that.” The class includes sighted assistants that help out with tangles and other problems. But other than that, the students do everything themselves. Sorge’s friend Kathy Hudziak, 65, of Janesville, Wisconsin, also blind since birth, said looms were fascinating to her. When she visited Sorge, she was taken with the scarves and wall hangings her friend had made. “I love the texture of the woven cloth,” Hudziak said, and she asked her friend if she could learn to weave, too. Since then, Hudziak has made dish towels and place mats, scarves and two handbags. Another student, Sue Melrose, 64, of Modesto, California, praised Winslow for accommodating their special needs. “You could not find a better teacher,” said Melrose, blind from cancer of the retina at the
age of 2. “They watch what you do and figure out how to make it easier.” Karen Heesen, 64, of Janesville, Wisconsin, also blind since birth, embraced the weaving class with gusto, making several sets of place mats, scarves and dish towels. Vicki Mullis, 55, of Jacksonville, is legally blind from congenital cataracts and still has some vision. “This is my fourth year,” Mullis said of the weaving class. “I’ve made two scarves and a shawl, and the third year I made table runners and gave a couple as Christmas gifts. This year, I’m making a wall hanging, and I’m very very excited about it.” Another student, Selinda Chasteen, who missed this year because of a bad cold, became blind in 2005 as the result of a stroke. Chasteen, 67, of DeKalb, said she wanted to learn weaving because she used to do embroidery and crochet, but once she became blind, “suddenly I had nothing to do with my hands.” “It drove my husband crazy. He said, ‘Let’s try weaving,’ and he called Fine Line,” Chasteen said. “Heather taught me how to see with my fingers instead of my eyes.”

Ater years of not having his academic needs recognized or met in the public school system and enduring the negative consequences of that, he is thriving and happy again about going to school.” DVA Parent “Every teacher and student in this school knows our child's name. he small class sizes give the teachers more time to focus on the individual child's needs. ST. CHARLES – Members of the St. Charles City Council on July 21 were not interested in revisiting the topic of video gambling in St. Charles, even on a limited basis. During the public comment portion of the council’s regular meeting, Donald Ramsell, attorney for the St. Charles Moose Lodge, asked the council to consider allowing video gaming that would be limited to veterans and service groups in St. Charles. None of the aldermen at the council’s regular meeting wanted to make a motion directing city staff to bring research on limited video gaming to a City Council
See COUNCIL, page 9
HOW WILL YOUR CHILD FLOURISH in an ever-changing world? It is the goal for students to leave Da Vinci Academy with a well-established “tool box” of knowledge and skills along with a high level of self-conidence, adaptability, and lexibility such that they feel they can take on any challenge presented to them. As our mission states, we want to “Develop well-rounded and socially responsible students to succeed in a globally-connected world by fostering curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.” “I was named an Illinois State Scholar in 2014, received several scholarships from the Rotary Club of Geneva, St. Peter's Church, the Shodeen Foundation and half of my tuition paid for at Loyola University due to my GPA and ACT score. I played varsity soccer as a freshman and sophomore, and was also active in my high school's Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and president of the Peer Leadership Program.” - DVA Graduate “Da Vinci taught me to never doubt my potential, especially when I was in high school, and it continues to help me now.” - DVA Graduate adno=0283043

EYE INJURY PREVENTION adno=0278944
Nearly 2.5 million people suffer eye injuries in the United States annually, and nearly one million people have lost some degree of vision as a result. In most cases, these injuries could have been prevented with the use of protective eyewear at home. The fact is that nearly half of all eye injuries occur in the home. While construction and factory workers are well aware of the importance of wearing shatterproof goggles, eye shields, and other forms of protective eyewear, the public tends to be more lax about eye protection at home. This is very unfortunate because it only takes an errant shard from a power saw or debris flung from a lawnmower to rob people of their sight. P.S. Keep a pair of protective goggles with your jumper cables in the car. Battery acid, sparks, and debris from damaged or improperly jump-started auto batteries can severely damage your eyes.

committee. St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina asked for the motion after Ward 2 Alderman Rita Payleitner and Ward 4 Alderman Jim Martin voiced their opposition to the discussion. Ramsell said the organization was disappointed that the City Council was unwilling to support veterans and charitable organizations. “The Moose has been here for 101 years providing services and to the extent that we can continue to do so, we [would] like their support,” Ramsell said after the meeting. “But apparently they’re already flush with enough cash that they don’t need us.” Ramsell cited Evergreen Park and New Lenox as two Illinois municipalities that have
enacted ordinances allowing limited video gaming. He also talked about other cities that have seen higher-than-expected revenue generation with video gaming Payleitner still disagreed and is opposed to government entities benefitting from what she said “is always a sucker’s game.” St. Charles banned video gaming after a state law was passed in 2009 that allows each municipality to decide whether video gambling would be allowed. Rogina disagreed with the council’s unwillingness to even discuss limited video gaming. He reminded the council that the only way to look for other sources of revenue was to raise the tax levy. Ramsell said the St. Charles Moose Lodge would consider de-annexation from the city as a next step.

LUPITA’S TEQUILA TASTE
Fruit salad, with cucumbers, romaine lettuce, pineapple, watermelon and tortilla strips, is one of the four dishes to be paired with several flavors of Milagro tequila at Lupita’s Cocina in Campton Hills on Wednesday, July 30.
Tequila, food pairing event to take place July 30 at Campton Hills restaurant By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Those who attend Lupita’s Cocina’s Tequila Taste on Wednesday, July 30, will get a taste of what the Campton Hills restaurant has to offer. “We do serve a lot of fresh fruit margaritas, and we do have a nice variety of well-known tequilas,” said restaurant owner and St. Charles resident Jose Quintero. “Lately, we’ve been working a lot with the Milagro tequila.” This is the inaugural year for the Tequila Taste. Lupita’s Cocina, located at 40W222 LaFox Road in Campton Hills, near St. Charles, is still a relatively new restaurant, having only opened its doors last year. Quintero said he thought the event would be a good way to showcase what the restaurant does. “This will be a good opportunity to show people exactly what we do,” he said. “We do a nice presentation on our plates.” The Tequila Taste will start at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and reservations can be made by calling Lupita’s Cocina at 630-377-0706. He has been planning Tequila Taste for the last two months. If the weather cooperates, the event will be held on the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio. “We decided this was the right time, being summertime,” Quintero said. For $45 a person, people will receive a four-course meal, which includes ceviche, a seafood dish popular in South America, fruit salad, pollo a la crema and churros con helado. The event also will feature several different tequilas and margaritas, including Milagro silver tequila and margarita de melon. The menu was developed by the restaurant’s chef, Roberto Barojas. During Tequila Taste, the restaurant will educate customers about tequilas, Quintero said. Tequila was first mass produced in the early 19th century in Guada-
lajara, Mexico. A few people have already reserved spots for Tequila Taste, Quintero said. The event is limited to 50 people, but Quintero said he will strive to accommodate as many people as possible. “We might have to do a second seating or have a second one the following week,” he said. Tequila Taste will likely expose more people to the restaurant. Quintero said the restaurant continues to gain new customers since it opened in January 2013. “We have seen business grow by 25 percent from last year,” he said. “Obviously people know that we are here, and they tell other people about us. That’s how we get our business, through recommendations.” Freshness is at the center of everything the restaurant does. “We buy vegetables from some of the local gardeners and local farmers,” Quintero said. Lupita’s Cocina is known for its flavorful fajitas. “We create our own fajitas sauce made out of fresh ingredients,” Quintero said. “It’s pretty good.” The restaurant strives to set itself apart from other restaurants serving Mexican food, he said. “We want people to know that we are a little bit different,” Quintero said. The restaurant is planning more special events, including a wine tasting. And Quintero said he hopes to make Tequila Taste an annual event. More information about Lupita’s Cocina is available by going to the restaurant website, www.lupitas-cocina.com.

SPORTS ‘Off-the-charts good’
Chef Williams keeps Cougars nourished during season
By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars executive chef Jon Williams sprays to all food groups when concocting the club’s postgame spreads. “Anywhere from chicken to hamburgers to turkey burgers to roast beef to barbecue stuff,” infielder David Bote began. “Mashed potatoes, vegetables, macaroni and cheese. I have no complaints.” If Bote or any teammates were vexed with the vittles, it’s likely Williams would know. He seeks feedback at least once a homestand, entering the clubhouse for any culinary consultation from the staff. Like his constituents, Williams usually leaves happy. “As far as our home spread, it compares with a lot of Triple-A places I’ve been,” manager Mark Johnson said. “It’s off-the-charts good.” Williams, also the club’s director of catering, brings plenty of experience to an oft-overlooked role. Now in his 12th year with the Cougars – including seven as a full-time employee – he’s the one ensuring that the players who inspire the peanut- and cracker jack-eating faithful get sustenance from something more substantial than ballpark fare. A protein, two sides and a salad provide the base for his menus, which are as diverse as ever in his fifth season as chef. In the past, officials from the Cougars’ parent club typically offered restrictions or guidelines for what could be served. In 2014, the Cubs took no such action. “This year, it’s been a lot more interesting and more fun to do for players,” Williams said, “because they’ve opened it up to whatever I feel like making.” One of his favorite meals to prepare is lasagna with house salad, garlic bread and green beans. One of the players’ favorite items is the proverbial carrot
Sandy Bressner – sbressner@shawmedia.com
Kane County Cougars clubhouse manager Scott Anderson assembles trays of lasagna and salad for a post-game meal for Cougars players. of the flat steak with grilled asparagus and Caesar salad offering. That dish wouldn’t be complete without the “baby baker,” a smaller version of the baked potato. The Cougars especially welcomed baby bakers to the party on the night of June 7. Commissioned by the club to cook something special for the impending Western Division first-half title clincher, Williams added the item as a side dish to the main attraction – a cutting board station serving prime rib and roasted turkey. “That was fun, because we’ve never really done that for them before,” Williams said. Almost six weeks later, the gesture still isn’t lost on the Cougars. “That was really neat. It was really nice of them to do
that,” right-hander Corbin Hoffner said. “They had real good food and stuff like that. Nice little accomplishment to do, and they just paid off for it.” Williams also cooks postgame meals for the umpires and visiting field staff, offering the same food served in the Cougars’ clubhouse. His pregame offerings for the Cougars consist of lighter fare – deli trays, grilled chicken, perhaps ravioli – for night games. For day games, when players must arrive at the ballpark when they’d typically be sleeping or eating breakfast, the clubhouse is well-stocked with cereal, fruits and vegetables. Opposing players are at the whim of their clubhouse manager for their pregame spreads. “That’s a treat if you’ve got
lunchmeat,” Johnson said. “Usually it’s just peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and honey, and that’s it.” Cougars clubhouse manager Scott Anderson, who rates highly among players, often takes basic takeout food orders on the final games of road series, getting acclimated with the Applebee’s and Jimmy John’s of the Midwest League before returning to the ballpark. “He hooks us up pretty good, and obviously, we’ve got to return the favor and we’ve got to tip him good,” Bote said. Johnson occasionally provides his own foodservice on the road, gathering whatever remains from what was served to the visiting staff and placing it in a tray. Before the team bus departs, he’ll walk down the aisle, offering appetizers as the team heads to the
hotel – and ideally, an adjacent restaurant where players can spend their $25 road per diems. While Williams understands the nutritional challenges of life on the road, he has yet to hear Cougars strength and conditioning coach Ed Kohl deliver the humbling news that a player looks under-nourished or is in need of a diet. That’s happened before during his tenure, prompting Williams to follow a specific menu for the player in question. Lately, during the salad days of his Cougars career, he saves that attention to detail for after the game. “I’ve been just trying to put a little bit of everything in there, you know,” Williams said. “Mexican, Italian, American. Trying to keep it diverse.”
