Sculpture in the Park exhibition thrives as city art destination By CAROL HAGGAS

This year’s Sculpture in the Park exhibition at Mt. St. Mary Park includes 13 pieces provided by 12 nationwide sculptors. The park is located east of Route 31 and south of Prairie Street in St. Charles.

stcharlesrepublican@shawmedia.com If someone really wants to impress an out-of-town guest – and if they really want to show new visitors the best St. Charles has to offer – then a visit to the Sculpture in the Park exhibition at Mt. St. Mary Park is the thing to do. That’s what one North Shore woman did for her mother on Mother’s Day, specifically to see “Rescue Kitty,” the second Sculpture in the Park entry by Sawyer, Michigan, artist Martha Cares. “She loves your park and plans to bring her mother back for some exercise on a regular basis,” said Cares. Whether they come for the art or for the atmosphere, patrons who visit the park between now and the end of September will find themselves immersed in the best of both worlds. Serenely nestled on the west bank of the scenic Fox River, there is no more picturesque spot in the city, nor one with a more impressive array of world-class public art. From Tucson-based Pokey Park, whose whimsical bronze animals joyfully express a love of nature, to Kenosha, Wisconsin, sculptor Bruce Niemi’s soaring stainless-steel towers that float above the park like silver wings, the variety of the 13 pieces provided by 12 talented sculptors from around the country and region exhibits a wide range of media and infinite interpretations of nature and the human condition. “It’s a very contemplative show,” said Jane Davidson, one of two St. Charles sculptors participating this year. “I love the setting. You can walk from one piece to

another with enough time to think about them or sit on a bench and ponder the artist’s intentions.” Davidson, whose 300-pound stainless steel sculpture is entitled “Truth,” is a first-time participant in this year’s show. Indeed, interacting with each sculpture is as individual an experience as the pieces themselves. For fellow St. Charles sculptor Douglas Eageny, who works with elements from nature and recycled materials, the medium is a message in and of itself. This year’s entry represents Eageny’s fourth Sculpture in the Park exhibit, and while his metal-and-stone sculpture “Whirlwind” has a specific meaning to him, “people see it and it might represent something entirely different to them.” The response to Cares’ “Rescue Kitty” sculpture is not so ambiguous. A fierce advocate for shelter animals, Cares followed up her 2013 “My Rescue Dog” sculpture with a beguiling, smiling gray cat – both pieces part of her mission to create awareness of the millions of animals helped by rescue organizations and shelters each year. “I want people to see my work and feel the heartwarming emotion that anyone who has ever cherished a pet has

experienced,” said Cares, “but I also want them to honor the people who generously devote themselves to animal rescue and, ideally, become inspired to become part of that effort.” Now in its ninth year, this free annual celebration is a joint venture between the St. Charles Park District and the St. Charles Park Foundation. This year’s entrants can be found situated along a half-mile walking path and join eight sculptures from prior shows permanently on display. From the massive, 2,500-pound, fire-engine red, steel sculpture “Here” by Chicago artist Ruth Aizuss Migdal to the diminutive 28-pound bronze “Ballerina” by Lake in the Hills artist Patricia Brutchin, all sculptures are for sale. Prices can range from $1,200 to $70,000. But for visitors who have neither the budget nor the setting for a one-of-a-kind piece of public art, yet still want a tangible memory of their visit, smaller, tabletop replicas of Martha Cares’ two sculptures, “My Rescue Kitty,” and 2013’s “My Rescue Dog” are for sale at $75 and $150, respectively, at both the Baker and

Pottawatomie community centers. For the artists, just being in the Sculpture in the Park show is memory enough. “I was fascinated by the installation of my sculpture and took dozens of pictures,” said Davidson, who couldn’t envision the machinations involved in wrangling a massive yet fragile work of art into place. “These gentlemen from the park district’s maintenance department are real pros at what they do.” Eageny eagerly agrees. “The park district and the commission were supportive and encouraging of me and my art, and they are doing important work by bringing people downtown and letting visitors know that the city supports artists and is committed to the beautification of the city,” he said. Indeed, the Sculpture in the Park exhibition attracts thousands of visitors annually. So whether one is playing tour guide for a house guest or simply wants to spend a tranquil afternoon surrounded by the beauty provided by Mother Nature and the talented artists she inspires, Mt. St. Mary Park is the place to be this summer.

St. John Neumann pastor has array of life experiences By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After four decades and a few job titles, the Rev. David Peck once again is back in the community where he grew up. This month, Peck, who turned 58 July 20, completed his first full year as pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in St. Charles. Besides a one-year stint as associate pastor at St. Patrick Church on the city’s west side, most of Peck’s life in the priesthood has been serving other Illinois communities. He welcomes the return to the place where his parents still live. His distant cousins belong to the family who once owned the farmland that now is Peck Farm Park in Geneva. “I walked these streets as a teenager ... obviously, there’s been a lot of growth,” he said. Like Kane County, Peck has developed over the past few

decades with an array of life experiences. He has law and business experience, speaks conversational Spanish and is also a certified firefighter. The St. Charles police and fire departments heard about Peck’s experience and certification and in fall 2013 asked him to become their volunteer chaplain. The departments have not yet summoned Peck on a call, but he is ready to assist at an emergency day or night. Peck first took firefighter courses when he was a fire chaplain from 2000 to 2009 in Rochelle, where he served as pastor of

that city’s St. Patrick Parish. To have someone with his background willing to do this for the department is a tremendous asset, said David Kintz, a St. Charles deputy police chief. The St. Charles police and fire departments each have gone without a chaplain in the past few years, with the fire department having been without a chaplain for more than a decade. Peck’s experience in Critical Incident Stress Management also can help any officers or firefighters struggling to cope with responding to a traumatic event, said Leo Veseling, a St. Charles fire captain and St. John Neumann Parish member. Veseling said he has become friends with Peck, who doesn’t hesitate to participate in police officer training sessions or a swiftwater rescue class. “I think that gives him an upper hand over other chaplains,” Veseling said. “He’s had the training, it gives him

the credibility.” Peck admits he is an adrenaline junkie and is not afraid of fires. He believes what he is doing with all his skills is his gift back to God. “I was drawn by God to the priesthood,” Peck said. “I really believe that that’s what I was always meant to be, but I shied away from it.” Peck first changed course when he moved to New York and attended law school for two years while working at various firms. Then, he moved to the business world, working in mergers and acquisitions. Even though Peck built up his professional career, he said he did not have a sense of peace and fulfillment. That’s when he considered becoming a man of the cloth, thinking back to his days at Mount St. Mary’s Academy in St. Charles and Sacred Heart Seminary in Geneva, which now is the site of the Kane County Government Center.

“This is my 20th year as a priest, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” Peck said. Area residents, like those at the Delnor Glen assisted living community in St. Charles, look forward to the weekly Eucharistic Service and the monthly Mass from Father Peck, said Cathy Duer, Delnor Glen’s marketing and sales director. Delnor Glen has been associated with St. John Neumann for the past 15 years, she said. “Father Peck always has time for the residents and his explanations of the readings for the day are received with great appreciation,” Duer said. Peck said he is embarrassed to talk about his accomplishments, but he hopes his life experiences can help serve the community. “I don’t think they define me,” Peck said of his accolades. “I think what defines me is my relationship with God and with people. That’s what I’m proud of.”

While most diabetics do not experience anything other than minor eye problems, nearly four million adults diagnosed with diabetes report more serious trouble with their vision. In some cases, patients with diabetes can develop a condition called “diabetic macular edema” (DME), which involves fluid leakage into the macula (the central portion of the retina that allows for sharp, straightforward vision). As the fluid swells the macula, vision blurs. To treat this condition, the FDA approved ranibizumab (Lucentis), which a recent study shows to be effective in improving and maintaining vision over the course of three years. Moreover, as vision improves, fewer injections of ranibizumab are needed. The medication is generally well tolerated. P.S. Laser therapy can be used to reduce moderate vision loss in patients with clinically significant macular edema.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee on July 28 supported a future downtown 12k event over concerns from a local agency that holds a running event on the same day. The St. Charles Government Services Committee on July 28 voted 5-0 in favor of recommending approval for street and parking lot closures, as well as use of amplification equipment for the 2014 St. Charles 12k of Christmas. The 12k event is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 6 in downtown St. Charles, and at 9 a.m. that same day. TriCity Family Services plan to hold its Snowflake Shuffle 5k fundraising event in the Mill Creek subdivision in Geneva Township. The agency, which provides various mental health services for Tri-Cities residents, is concerned that the 12k event will impact the Shuffle, said Hallie Hudson, TriCity Family Services development associate, at the meeting. “Due to the cutbacks in state and local funding, the agency is increasingly relying on proceeds raised from this

event,” Hudson said to committee members at the meeting. Jim Martin, the committee chairman and 4th Ward alderman, asked that the issue come before the full St. Charles City Council as a separate item because four aldermen were absent at the time of the committee vote. The Government Services Committee is comprised of all 10 aldermen on the City Council. Danny Delgado at the meeting represented Multisport Madness, the group that is proposing the 12k race. He said all marketing efforts for the event have been geared toward half-marathon runners and that the group does not intend to take away from the Snowflake Shuffle. Delgado said Multisport Madness will consider giving a portion of its proceeds from the 12k race to TriCity Family Services. St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Steve Huffman said there are six residents who responded to Multisport Madness’ letters to the community about the event. Four of the residents were in support of the race and the other two sought more information, Huffman said.

Before

By CHARLES MENCHACA GENEVA – The Chris Walk Night Out Against Substance Abuse on July 26 drew people from beyond Kane County. Among the event’s attendees were Kathy Whitehead of Elk Grove, her sister, Karen Berrios, of Streamwood, and Whitehead’s sponsor, Pattie Cabana of Barrington. “It’s a good cause with great people and very organized,” Whitehead said. The three women were part of the 100 participants in a 5K race during the event’s seventh annual outing, which took place this year at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. In addition to the runners and walkers, the event drew dozens more people who gathered around several vendors, information booths, raffles and a silent auction. This year also was the first time attendees could sign up for a one-hour Zumba workout, and its first at the forest preserve, said Vicki Foley, a Shaw Media employee who started the event. Chris Walk is named after Foley’s son, Chris, who died of a heroin overdose on

July 15, 2007. He was 27. Chris Walk celebrates the lives of those lost, such as Foley’s son, and also brings awareness to the battle against substance abuse everywhere. “This is not a police problem; this is a societal problem,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said at the event. Perez – and also Kane County Coroner Rob Russell – in separate speeches talked about the need for groups to pool resources and work together to make a difference. Russell said he does not want to see young residents brought to the morgue who have died of a heroin or other drug overdose. Cody Lewis, 22, of Aurora, shared his struggle with heroin addiction at the event. He has been sober since October 2013 and said coming to events like Chris Walk helps him stay clean. Foley hugged and thanked Lewis for being honest about his addiction and told his mother, who also was at the event, that she knew exactly what she was going through. “Things like this will hopefully make people more aware so they won’t start [down that path],” Foley said.

A LASTING FRIENDSHIP Geneva family stays in touch with Denmark student they hosted By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com obviously he sees himself as your son as well. He must have a good bond with your family. Boelke: We’ve had other foreign exchange students, but he is the only one who really clicked with us. And that happens. The other ones were a little bit more distant. But he just fell in with our family. He was a lot like us. Also, he was great at the high school. He fit in with the kids, and he loved being there. He appreciated it.

GENEVA – Bob and Sandi Boelke did not realize when they hosted Denmark foreign exchange student Frederik Liberti in 1996 that their relationship with him would turn into a lifelong friendship. The couple in May went to Copenhagen for two weeks to visit him. He has visited them nine times. Kane County Chronicle Eric Schelkopf spoke to Sandi Boelke about the recent trip to see Liberti, who is 33 now and has a family. Eric Schelkopf: What made you want to visit him this year? Sandi Boelke: We wanted to meet his mother, whom we had never met. And now he has two children and a wife. So it was our turn to go there. Schelkopf: So, you’ve literally seen him grow up over the years. Boelke: Exactly. We keep in touch through Skype and his return visits, and we write notes and call him. Schelkopf: What made you want to host a foreign exchange student in the first place? Boelke: I felt like I really wanted my children to understand the different cultures and the different ways of Europe. And I do believe that they learned quite a bit from him. He lived with us for a year. He went through Geneva High School and completed his senior year there. His very favorite teacher there was Roxanne Curtis, the music teacher. And she did teach him a lot. He was in many of the groups, like the jazz group and the different groups that she had for the music students. And he always played guitar up in

Bob (left) and Sandi Boelke of Geneva recently returned from Copenhagen, Denmark, where see him over the years as well? they visited Frederik Liberti (right), a former foreign exchange student of the Boelke’s from Boelke: Yes. My daughter and her 1996. The couple has remained in contact with Liberti for about 18 years. husband went with us to Copenhagen, his room. Schelkopf: And now he fronts his own band. Boelke: He does. Schelkopf: He was at your house for a year. What types of things did you try to introduce him to? Boelke: Well, of course, we went into Chicago, and we went to the ice skating rink. We went to lots of places around Kane County, like the Kane County Fair. We took him to Springfield, so he could see all of the culture of our state. We also took him to Disney World in Orlando, and he accompanied our family to Niagara Falls. Schelkopf: This was the first time you had been to Copenhagen. What did you think? Did it live up to your expectations? Boelke: It was a very, very old country. And I’ve never seen so much cobblestone in my whole entire life.

You know how everything is paved here? It was all cobblestone there. But it was a very unique country, and very beautiful. We took a ride on a Viking ship, which was really incredible. Schelkopf: When was the last time he visited you here? Boelke: Three years ago. He came here for a week, and then he went to see the Redwoods in California. Schelkopf: Did you think this relationship would last this long? Boelke: No, I never would have imagined that we would become so close. In all sense of the word, he is my son. He loves having two mothers. He calls me “mom,” but he also calls his mother “mom.” It was strange being there with his mom. He would say “mom,” and we would both look. Schelkopf: Since he visits you so much,

and when we Skype, we try to include them as much as possible. Schelkopf: So, do you see yourself hosting any more foreign exchange students in the future? Boelke: We possibly might get involved again. It was more for when the kids were in high school, but I do see us doing it again, just to have someone who needs a place to stay. Schelkopf: For someone thinking of hosting a foreign exchange student, what would you say the benefits are? Boelke: Well, you can teach everyone in the household about other cultures and different societies. But he did speak English very, very well, and that was a plus. The Danes learn English in fifth grade, so they start very early. There was no language barrier. He spoke as well as us. Also, you learn from each other. There is no doubt that we learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us.

GENEVA – Living in the Midwest may not always provide ample opportunities to enjoy the fresh, “off the boat” catches you would expect to find in states bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean or Gulf of Mexico. But getting fresh seafood in the Chicago suburbs is not an impossible feat. Located in the Dodson Place plaza overlooking tree-lined 3rd Street in downtown Geneva, is the upscale American restaurant Wildwood, and every Thursday it receives a shipment of fresh oysters, which it serves on Thursday. And – so I was told – the restaurant also has a tendency to sell out on Thursday, providing its dining clientele ample opportunity for fresh fare. The Oyster Bar opens in the Wildwood lounge beginning at 5 p.m. It’s not a buffet – you still order from a menu. The Oyster Bar menu is usually posted on the restaurant website the day before so customers know exactly from where the next day’s shipments of oysters are hailing. Normally, Wildwood offers four different kinds of oysters on the half shell – two from the East Coast and two from the West Coast. The menu also includes Peel ’N Eat Shrimp, New England Clam Chowder and discounted Prosecco, rose and sparkling wine ($5.50 a glass). My dining companion and I entered the lounge around 5:30

p.m. (or until they run out) Thursdays n INFO: 630-377-8325 or www. wildwoodsteak.com p.m. and – with the unexpected 70-degree weather in July – decided to sit outside at one of Wildwood’s outdoor patios, where a few tables already were settled by people slurping oysters, peeling shrimp and exploring Wildwood’s simple-yet-wonderful Oyster Bar menu. Only three of the four oyster options had made it in on time that particular Thursday, so we ordered three ($7.50) of the Delaware oysters from Delaware Bay, New Jersey; and three ($7.50) of the Fanny Bay oysters from Baynes Sound British Columbia, Canada. They also can be ordered by the half dozen ($12) and dozen ($20). We also ordered the clam chowder ($6) and a dozen Peel ’N Eat Shrimp ($8).

Chicago Irish band The Tossers to perform in Aurora music? Duggins: What we did bring was a contemporary turn to it, like The Pogues did. All the bands that kind of do what we do all have a slightly different bent on how they approach it. The real thing that we’ve added to it is a place, in Chicago especially, where people can come together and celebrate their heritage.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Since 1993, Chicago band The Tossers has been entertaining crowds with its energetic blend of Irish folk and punk rock. The Tossers will perform Saturday, Aug. 2, at the allday Fox Valley Irish Festival at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway, Aurora. More information is available by going to RiverEdge’s website, www.riveredgeaurora.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to The Tossers lead singer Tony Duggins about the upcoming show. Eric Schelkopf: Of course, you guys are going to be at the Fox Valley Irish Festival with two other Irish bands from Illinois. Does that make it even more of a special occasion? Tony Duggins: I’m sure it will. We’ll play with anybody.

Tony Duggins (left) will perform alongside his bandmates in The Tossers Saturday at the Fox Valley Irish Festival at RiverEdge Park in Aurora.

Schelkopf: Of course, The Tossers celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. What should people expect when they come out this weekend? Are you going to play songs from your entire career? Duggins: We’re going to do a song off every record at least, as well as hopefully some new songs and some old traditional stuff, too.

have a good time. That was it. That was really it. And then people started coming to the shows and we started getting shows at bigger clubs, and it went on from there. It was the people’s response to it, really. We were just having a good time.

Schelkopf: What were your goals in starting the band in the first place? Duggins: We were 18 years old. We were just trying to get into bars and play music and

Schelkopf: Are you surprised that people connected so well to your music and that here you are 20 years later? Duggins: I always knew that I was going to try to make a

career out of music. I didn’t necessarily know it would be with this group. I assumed back then we would be just playing in bars and at festivals and stuff. It is a pleasant surprise that we’re still doing it after all this time. Schelkopf: Being that you are from the South Side of Chicago, was it a given that you guys would be in an Irish band? Duggins: Maybe, the way that fate turns out. You are surrounded by that [culture]

in Chicago. We were. I was never into Irish music as a kid because I didn’t think it was cool. As I got older, I started getting into more music than just punk rock and heavy metal. Schelkopf: Were there any bands that led you to the fact that Irish music could be cool? Duggins: Yeah, The Pogues, hands down. They are the best. Schelkopf: What do you think your band has brought to Irish

Schelkopf: Of course, your brother, Aaron, is in the band, too. I imagine there are pros and cons about having a sibling in the same band. Are there more pros than cons? Duggins: We may argue over stuff from time to time, but believe me, that’s very rare. We’re pretty much all on the same page as far as the music goes. My brother is probably is one of the greatest assets we have in this band. Every one of us performs as best as we can. Schelkopf: There are a lot of references to Chicago on your last album, “The Emerald City.” Would you say that it is your most personal album to date? Duggins: It is. I felt like I really needed to represent myself a lot more on the album and where I come from. It was time to make a homage to Chicago and my family and my friends. At the end of the day, this is the reason why we are doing it. It is a celebration of culture and family and friends. And really, it is a celebration of our lives in this city.

Wildwood’s Oyster Bar menu features a dozen Peel ’N Eat Shrimp boiled with Cajun and garlic spices for $8.

KAN • Thursday, July 31, 2014 • Kane County Chronicle / KCChronicle.com

Shaw Media photo

Continued from page 17 Our oysters came shucked and presented on ice with fresh lemons, champagne mignonette sauce, Tabasco and horseradish. The Delaware oysters were large, plump and had a salty, crisp flavor, while the Fanny Bay oysters were medium in size and had a sweet, citrus flavor. The very process of oyster eating – the squeezing of the lemon, smattering of horseradish, Tabasco sauce and delicate slurping – instantly rendered me defenseless to a “vacation” state of mind. The last time I enjoyed fresh oysters was in Florida two years ago. So, this was quite a treat. The Gulf shrimp are boiled with Cajun and garlic spices and served with lemons and a side of cocktail sauce. I could have stayed at that table peeling and eating shrimp into the wee hours of the evening. They were cooked to perfection, easy to peel and the spices enhanced

the shrimp without overpowering them. The clam chowder elicited a similar response with its heavy creamy concoction of onions, potatoes, clams and subtle kick of spice at the end of each bite. Exploring the culinary scene in Kane County can be quite an adventure, and it’s always particularly enjoyable when you discover a place that delivers exactly what you crave, and with the utmost precision. With Wildwood’s Thursday Oyster Bar, never again will I have to dream of the palm-laced beaches of Florida in order to remember what it is to dine on raw oysters and taste the delicate flavors of the sea.

SPORTS Ricketts points to plan during Cougars visit Cubs chairman calls Class-A site ‘top-notch facility’

On the Web Log on to KCChronicle. com/video to view video of Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts’ visit to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on July 28.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts loosened his collar and tie and watched most of the Cougars July 28 matinee after a morning speaking engagement at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Will he be in position for a repeat when West Michigan makes its next visit to Geneva in 2016? Although he can’t be certain, Cougars owner Bob Froehlich would like to think so. With Ricketts deferring discussion of the extension of the Cubs’ soon-to-expire two-year player development contract with the Cougars to the club’s baseball executives, Froehlich offered optimism about a deal as someone more familiar with negotiations. “It’s one of those things where we’re pretty confident it’s going to happen, and they sound like it’s going to happen,” Froehlich said. “But I’m one of those old-school guys. Until I have that contract in my hand, I’m not quite as confident. It would have been nice if he had announced it here today. That would have made my day for that.” Ricketts traveled to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for the first time armed with no such good news. However, he lauded his surroundings after addressing The Executives Club of Chicago for nearly 45 minutes as part of the organization’s luncheon speakers series, calling the Cougars’ home “a top-notch facility, particularly for [Class-A] ball.” Froehlich serves on The Executive Club’s board of directors and introduced Ricketts as “my good friend and boss” during the program in the Cougars’ super suite. That aside, any announce-

The event was hosted by the Executuves’ Club of Chicago and also featured Kane County Cougars Majority Owner Dr. Bob Froehlich. ment of their working relationship continuing beyond the 2014 season will have to wait. Ricketts called that the domain of Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod and general manager Jed Hoyer. “We’ve had a great experience with Kane County. I like Dr. Bob a lot. We like the facilities, we like the organization,” Ricketts said. “It’s really not my decision. I’ll leave that up to Theo and Jason and Jed, what they want to do, but it’s been a good relationship.” Ricketts addressed the Cubs’ organizational plan in greater depth during his talk, which included a slideshow that began with this up-front headline: “Cubs Have Historically Underperformed.” Addressing a group with

varying degrees of baseball savvy, he explained the organization’s approach to player development, free agency and a handful of other strategies bent on delivering the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908. Per one slide, the Cubs had baseball’s 23rd-best farm system in 2011 – the final season before Epstein took over – and zero consensus Top 50 prospects. These days, the organization rates through the roof. In its recent midseason updates, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus both listed three Cubs prospects among their top 15, a distinction shared by no other organization. While those plaudits offer promise and excite the fans Ricketts meets on the concourses of Wrigley Field and Fifth Third Bank Ballpark –

where he walked for parts of the game July 28 – they also come with a caveat. “What does it mean to have the best farm system in baseball? The answer is absolutely nothing until you win at the major league level,” Ricketts told the luncheon crowd. “So we don’t look at this as some kind of accomplishment that we think that there’s anything to be related. This is not done. This is just showing that what we’re doing is building toward having a capability of having sustained success at the major league level.” Cougars manager Mark Johnson, who met with Ricketts before the game, didn’t need to eat a burger or slurp Diet Pepsi with him in the super suite to feel strongly about the way the organization is moving. “He’s wonderful. Couldn’t

ask for a better owner or boss to work for,” Johnson said. “He gives us all the means necessary, and he wants to do the right things. It’s just been a pleasure since he’s been here.” The Ricketts family took ownership of the Cubs in 2009, and questions about ending the club’s famed world championship drought immediately followed each member. Tom Ricketts said his is the rare occupation in which strangers tell him their age before their name, often conveying their decades of loyalty to the team. A question-and-answer session at the end of his remarks invited more of the same from attendees and Cougars season ticket holders. When asked whether he might venture out on a limb and hazard a prediction of when the Cubs might finally end their championship futility, Ricketts quipped: “I don’t go out on limbs anymore. I mean, this whole thing is one, giant limb.” Ricketts said 19 out of every 20 Cubs fans he meets at Wrigley offers support for the club’s approach of building through the minors while absorbing lumps at the big league level. The Cougars hope he’ll have the chance to address that hopeful progression in Geneva in years to come. “Here’s how I would frame it: I think we know what we bring to the table for the Cubs. I think they know they’re one of the most iconic brands in sports, so they know what they bring to the table,” Froehlich said. “So when both parties know what they bring to the table and feel they have a winning hand, sometimes it just plays out on its own.”
