Getting birthday parties started is easy with Park District By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Who doesn’t love a birthday party? Food, friends, fun – celebrating this most elemental of milestones is one of life’s signature joys. But if you’re a parent who has grown tired of putting on the same old, same old “cakeand-balloons” event, the St. Charles Park District can help put some pizzazz back in your party planning. Party packages are available at several of the Park District’s most desired destinations, and – with way-cool birthday swag including invitations, tableware and goodie bags – these shindigs are not only the swankiest celebrations to pull off, they’re also the easiest. Park District staff provides setup and take-down service, meaning parents can actually enjoy their child’s party for once. Birthday parties can be held at the Pottawatomie Community Center, Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, Primrose Farm and – in season – Otter Cove Aquatic Park. Most party packages allow for a 90-minute celebration and children can choose from dozens of themes to make their day even more special.

Tragic times Last year was rough in other ways for the couple. A year before she was diagnosed, her grandfather, Kenneth Anderson of Batavia, who helped raise her, died of esophageal cancer. Then on Aug. 13, 2013, the day her chemo port was installed, her future moth-

er-in-law, Laura Osborne, died unexpectedly in an accident in Florida. A week later, her daughter, Kayla, then 6, was admitted to urgent care with a ruptured appendix. The little girl recovered and participated in the wedding as one of the flower girls. On Aug. 26, King started chemo and Oct. 1, her future husband was hospitalized with viral meningitis. He also recovered. “2013 was not our year,” King said.

Renewed hope But 2014 came with new hope and promise. Her last chemo treatment was Jan. 29, and her last scan in March showed she was in remission – no sign of cancer. She was hired for a new job she interviewed for in No-

She and Ronald King have been together eight years. Before her job at the Park District, she was a stay-at-home mom for their daughter, Kayla. Her now-husband, Ronald King, 30, works as a heavy equipment operator at Waste Management’s Batavia plant. When they decided to get married and had to postpone the wedding because of the cancer, neither would back out. Michelle King said she was

determined to get married this year, cancer or not, a wig over her chemo-hair – nothing and nobody was going to stop this next step in their lives together. Ronald King said he never had a hesitation or a second thought about proceeding with the wedding. “From the beginning, it was a shock,” Ronald King said of her cancer diagnosis. “You never expect something like that to happen to somebody that age.” Michelle had quit smoking a year and a half before the diagnosis, lost weight and was committed to a more healthy lifestyle, Ronald King said. Though they would have just

Dr. Kevin Barton at Loyola University Medical Center, who treated Michelle King, said Hodgkin lymphoma peaks from age 15 to 35 and then again in the 60s and 70s. “We don’t really know the cause,” Barton said. “The incidence is very low, about 5,000 per year in the U.S. The goal is to cure them. Having gone through the therapy, she [Michelle] has a pretty high probability of being cured.” Barton, who is also an associate professor of medicine, hematology and oncology, said Michelle’s decision to bring her story to the public can have a lifesaving effect of raising awareness of Hodgkin lymphoma – or any cancer – among young people. “Her hope was to shine a light on this sort of thing,” Barton said. “It is important, in part, because this demographic of 20-somethings are not folks that do not have much experience going to doctors ... of getting sick and having a life-threatening disease.” Barton said despite Michelle King not having a lot of symptoms, she went to a doctor after she found the lump. Then she went to a surgeon for a biopsy, and then saw a hematologist for evaluation and treatment. “It’s important to try to highlight that,” Barton said. “She had the courage that is

GENEVA – Michelle Gillespie stood in the bright sunshine of a warm August afternoon. Her white wedding dress glittered as she exchanged vows with her now husband, Ronald King, while about 80 friends and family cheered. That weddings happen in summertime in the outdoor chapel at Mill Creek Golf Club is not unusual, but this one, on Aug. 2, had special importance. Michelle King, 29, of Geneva was supposed to get married last year in August, but about six weeks before the big day, she found a lump on the right side of her neck. An ultrasound and pathology report confirmed it was Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. So instead of a wedding, she was prepped for surgery at Loyola University Medical Center. Instead of a honeymoon, she began chemotherapy. “It was supposed to be [a] very small 1-inch incision. Then they got in there and … took out a lymph node the size of a baseball,” King said. “I was a normal, healthy 28-year-old, and this just came out of nowhere. There were no signs, no symptoms. I don’t know how I did not feel that baseball in my neck.” As she received chemo and lost her long blonde hair, King said she changed her outlook on life. “I was definitely someone who would stress over little things and small things,” King said. “Everything I thought was important and would stress out about and dwell on – this makes you realize not to take everything so seriously. Every small thing you need to have control over – you don’t need control over. Let the small things go.”

as soon passed on facing cancer, Ronald King said facing up to it helped them realize how truly strong they were. “It’s helped us grow and helped us realize if we can get through this, we can get through anything,” Ron King said. “I think she has really proven her strength – not that she had anything to prove of how strong a person she really is.” If there was a bright spot in his illness, it was that he recovered quickly and was back to work the next week, Ron King said. “We were just so strong together,” Ron King said. “It’s amazing how we got through that year.”

As Michelle and Ronald King stood in front of their officiant Kevin Chapman, he noted their challenges. “The struggles this family faced in the past year would have devastated others,” Chapman said. “But with constant encouragement from each other, they have overcome and are ready now to carry on.” Then to the gathered crowd of family and friends, Chapman said, “Your being here is a true sign that they are loved by many.” Amid the hugs and tears following the ceremony, Michelle King said “it was like crossing the finish line.” “Not only am I officially married, but for me, it was to be able to get that far, it was like crossing the finish line,” Michelle King said. “One of the biggest emotional things about Saturday was not knowing a year ago if I would be able to be standing up there. I really had no idea. Everything was in question. I’m just happy to cross the finish line. I feel like I’ve come full circle.”

ST. CHARLES – The Tap House Grill, 3341 W. Main St., St. Charles, is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Fox Valley Wildlife Center during the month of August. “It’s the end of the summer, and we are really struggling financially,” volunteer Andrea Krueger wrote in an email. “Funds are drained because of the busy baby season. We hope to raise $5,000 to continue our mission of helping wildlife in need.” To support the fundraiser, customers can go to the Tap House for lunch or dinner, donate $5 to the wildlife center

and get a coupon for a free appetizer for a future visit. In addition, on Aug. 22, the wildlife center staff and volunteers will be at the restaurant with some of the center’s education animals. They also will be sponsoring a raffle for a Kindle Fire and a $50 gift certificate card to Shima’s Sushi Japanese Restaurant, 40W222 Lafox Road, Campton Hills. The Fox Valley Wildlife Center, in the Elburn Forest Preserve, 45W061 Route 38, Elburn, is a nonprofit organization that operates on fundraisers and donations. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife brought into the center.

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles this year will pay more for its road rock salt than in previous years because of widespread depleted salt supplies. The St. Charles City Council on Aug. 4 voted 10-0 in favor of purchasing 7,000 tons of salt from Elgin-based Central Salt for the 2014-15 snow removal season at a cost of $93.75 per ton. The total cost of $656,250 is $206,250 more than what the city budgeted for snow removal expenses, said Chris Minick, the city’s finance director. The city will have to pay the difference from an addition to its budget, according to an executive summary of the proposed salt purchase. Minick said the city was left with little choice after the harsh winter severely depleted vendor and manufacturer salt supplies. Because of the lack of salt, St. Charles and about 195 other municipalities received an unprecedented no-bid response, meaning vendors did not bid a price or commit to salt delivery for a significant number of locations, according to a July 25 letter from Minick to city leaders. The city went with the $93.75 Central Salt quote and awaits pricing from Morton Salt, one of its traditional suppliers. The bid offers some municipalities did receive ranged from $70 to over $140 per ton of salt, according to a July 17 email the city received from the state of Illinois. “Our quote of $93.75 is not the cheapest that’s out there, but it’s not the most expensive,” Minick said to the aldermen Aug. 4.

ge personality. He was undaunted by what others might think. He found the world amusing and he had an uncanny knack for identifying and characterizing, in a quip, the humor or irony hidden in almost any situation. He was active in the Fox Valley arts community for 30 years, most notably in Elgin, Batavia and Aurora. George's last exhibition, which he attended, was held at Architect Lane Allen's offices in Aurora during Aurora's “First Friday” event in June. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sister, Theresa. In addition to his family, he is survived by his dear cousins, Carol Makepeace of Minnesota and Beth Valenzuela of Arizona. The life of George Pope Turner is evidence not only of the fact that art enriches the lives of those who indulge in or appreciate it, but that living a good, honest and fulfilling life is an art, in and of itself. A memorial retrospective honoring the life and work of George Pope Turner will be held at the David L. Pierce Art & History Center, downtown Aurora at 20 E. Downer Pl, 3rd fl, on Friday, August 15, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00pm.

STILL IN DEMAND

Travel books line the shelves of Wilson Travel & Cruise President Janet Foster’s St. Charles office.

Travel agents booking more vacations today instead of issuing airline tickets By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Wilson Travel & Cruise President Janet Foster knows how easy it is for people to book airline tickets online these days through the proliferation of such websites as expedia.com and orbitz.com. So her agency has had to change its approach in order to survive. “The business has changed,” Foster said. “You have to move with your industry as the buying patterns change. Booking airline tickets is no longer a major part of our business.” Not all travel agencies have been able to make the adjustment. According to recent statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 73,000 travel agents in 2012, down from 95,360 a decade earlier. Foster has seen plenty of changes in the travel industry since she purchased Wilson Travel & Cruise in St. Charles in 1986. The travel agency was started by the Wilsons in 1962, Foster said. One of the first changes happened as the result of the rise of the Internet in the mid-1990s, when airlines stopped paying commissions to travel agents and started selling tickets themselves, Foster said. “The Internet has opened up ticket buying,” she said. These days, the majority of Wilson Travel’s business is putting together vacation packages. “Cruises comprise 25 percent of our business, with the rest of it being landbased vacations,” Foster said. Oui Travel also has had to adjust to the changes in the travel industry since opening on Randall Road in Batavia in 1990. “It’s very true that we don’t issue as many airline tickets as we used to,” said Oui Travel manager Cindy Brown. “However, I think that in recent years, especially this past year, I think that

people are actually returning back to agencies for that kind of stuff.” Her father, David Owen, started the business and continues to work there. Brown thinks that more people are returning to travel agents because they don’t have the time or knowledge to plan a trip themselves. “They don’t want to deal with it,” she said. “It’s confusing, because there’s so much out there. There’s so much information out there, and they don’t want to sift through it.” Her customers also like the convenience of going to a travel agent who can check and double-check every detail of the trip, Brown said. “People just want one-stop shopping,” she said. “ I had booked a cruise for someone recently, and they just wanted to make sure the flights were going to coordinate with the cruise times, and that they wouldn’t get there and miss the

I think there is a comfort in using somebody, a professional who knows what they’re doing and does it everyday.” Booking plane tickets only comprises about 5 percent of the agency’s business, she said. Most of Oui Travel’s business these days is booking cruises, tours and vacation packages, both inside and outside of the United States. “I just helped a gentleman put together a little trip,” Brown said. “He’s going to Oklahoma to see Lionel Richie. But he needed air and car travel and a hotel, and he wanted it all coordinated and I just did it. So it’s that kind of stuff.” Foster noted that the employees at Wilson Travel have more than 20 years of professional experience, so they are well-versed in putting together a vacation package. Before putting together a package, Foster and her employees first try to determine the needs of the customer. “We listen to their needs, and find out what they are after,” Foster said. “We do the research and pricing, and come to them with a proposal.”

Value, rather than the best price, is what is important to her clients. “Our clients aren’t necessarily looking for the best price,” Foster said. “They are looking for the best value. They want a good product at a fair price.” And although the Internet has presented its share of challenges to the travel industry, it also has proven to a blessing to travel agents. “It used to be, you would have to go get a brochure,” Brown said. “You would have to go get destination information. You have all that information at your fingertips now. Most of the major tour suppliers will have online booking engines that are for travel agents only. If I wanted to book a Royal Caribbean cruise, there is a whole booking engine for just travel agents. You have to have travel agent credentials to get into that.” Foster is confident that Wilson Travel will be serving customers well into the future. “There is room for this kind of travel agency, and I believe there always will be,” she said.

GENEVA – When I first noticed Nobel House’s striking, bright-blue awning distinctively standing out along busy State Street in downtown Geneva, I was immediately intrigued. Because it’s named after Swedish-born Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize, I imagined the restaurant’s interior would be filled with tattered books lining shelves, rustic mahogany furniture, Oriental rugs and walls adorned with framed photos of Nobel Prize laureates like Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King, Jr. But my envisioned “Nobel theme” ends as soon as you walk through the door. Instead, you’ll find a youthful, contemporary, tavern-like eatery that has made its culinary prowess the star of the show. Still exuding plenty of rustic charm with hearty, exposed wooden beams running along the ceiling and urbanesque lighting features, Nobel House is a strong contender among Geneva’s drinking and dining scene. Having visited two times prior to sample Nobel House’s mighty craft-beer list – featuring 30 brews on tap and anywhere from 60 to 90 brews by the bottle – I was looking forward to trying the recipes coming out of its kitchen. But first – beer. Nobel House is a great place to explore the world of craft brew. The staff is friendly, quite knowledgeable and will give you free samples of whatever they have on tap if you’re having a difficult time making a decision. If you don’t know what you like, they can help you with that, too. No beer snobs here; they are happy to help and teach. Now, the food. The restaurant is equipped with its own smoker, so – to be expected – meat is a formidable option, and they have at least two barbecue sauces – one that is more vinegar-based and the other is on the sweeter end

Runners compete Aug. 9 during the Bob Leonard River Run in St. Charles.

Runners rise to the challenge By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Changes that made the races more challenging in the eighth annual Bob Leonard River Run and Walk on Aug. 9 did not deter runners from competing in the events. The 5K course was changed to make it more difficult and a 10K race was added. Race officials had to close walk-up registration for the two running events because they ran out of racing bibs and timing chips. “Today we had so many walk-ins that we ran out of bibs,” said Julie Farris, president of CMF Events, the company that managed the races. “Based on the bibs and based on the amount of the attendees, this was the largest event

to date that the Bob Leonard River Run and Walk has done.” Ninety-three chipped runners competed in the 10K and 157 ran in the 5K. Runners agreed that the 10K course, which started in Pottawatomie Park, crossed the Fox River and winded its way to Randall Road before returning to the park, was taxing. “I would say the switches they put in there about mile four [was the hardest part of the course]” 10K male winner Matt Sagan said. “It was up and down and a big hill right in the middle. It was a pain.” Sagan, a senior on the Riverside-Brookfield High School cross country team, finished with a time of 37:53.05. His younger brother, Jack, took third, crossing the finish line

in 39:55.85. “This [race] is more for me and my brother. This is like our preseason training,” said the older Sagan. “Our season starts on Wednesday.” Farris said most of the 5K course remained the same as in the past. “We changed it a little bit in sections with stairs and making it a little more difficult,” Farris said. “The 10K was an expansion of the 5K run – a little more rugged, a little more challenging.” “I was expecting to run on road and pavement so that was demanding,” said David Phelps, a St. Charles resident who took fifth place in the 10K male division and first in the 40-49 male category. “Running in the grass and the switchback in the hills, I wasn’t expecting that this year.”

Bob Leonard River Run gets more difficult, crowd still comes out

Elburn resident and Northern Illinois University dance student Jessica Lewis said she was surprised at all the hills. “It was very challenging because I expected a very flat track,” said Lewis, who came in third in the 20-29 female group in the 10K. Rounding out the top three male 10K winners was Matt Baker (38:15.32) from Polo. Oswego resident Stephanie Johnson finished first in the female 10K division. She completed the circuit in 40:06.78. Sue Russell of DeKalb took second (45:14.22) and Bartlett’s Grace Churney finished third (46:48.99). Stephanie Howe, 13, of Geneva took top honors in the female division of the 5K race with a time of 20:01.13. Howe, who will be an

eighth-grader this fall, did not like the addition of stairs to the course. “It’s kind of hard to go up and down and do it fast,” she said. Emily Belanger, also of Geneva, took second in the 5K female division (22:24.44). Beth Daniel, from Tullahoma, Tenn., came in third (22:44.59). Top 5K honors in the male division went to Matt Rolain of Rochester, Mich. (17:43.31); James Myal of St. Charles (19:37.60) and Dan Roder of Elgin (20:05.83). The event is name in honor of the late Bob Leonard, a St. Charles resident who was instrumental in starting the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles. The organization’s goals are to enhance, protect and beautify the Fox River in St. Charles.
