Dick Leckbee’s uncle Clarence Sellers served in the army in World War I. Leckbee said his uncle was hit with mustard gas and suffered a shoulder injury while fighting in France. Leckbee, former commander of the St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars, said he used to visit his mother’s brother in Edina, Mo., as a kid during summer vacations. “It caused him nerve damage, and he had total disability the rest of his life,” Leckbee said of the mustard gas. “He had other physical and mental aftereffects from it.” World War I began in the summer of 1914, 100 years ago. The U.S. declared war on Germany April 6, 1917, and veterans of that war are noted in a plaque on the Baker Community Center in St. Charles, in a photo at the Batavia Public Library and in photos and records at the Geneva History Museum and the St. Charles Heritage Center. Leckbee said his uncle seldom talked about his service. “He was in the thick of it in France. He used to tell me about running through hills and trying not to get his head blown off in France most of the time,” Leckbee said. “I remember him saying how peaceful it is around here. ‘Dickie, see the trees and hear the nice birds singing. We had none of that over there, trying to dodge bullets and trying to stay alive.’ “I understand from my family and my mother how messed up he got overseas. He suffered, but he never made an issue of it. He thanked God to be able to come home.” While Leckbee’s uncle survived a mustard gas attack, Harold Axel Colson did not, and died Nov. 10, 1918, according to a War Department honor roll of the dead, a document in the St. Charles Heritage Center collection. A torn and yellowed undated telegram from the War Department tells of the heroics of one St. Charles soldier and

death of another St. Charles soldier, both unnamed: “In a platoon on the edge of Bois du Fay in France, heard in the twilight, a whir of airplanes, and looking up, saw an American plane with three German planes in pursuit. “The American plane climbed above the enemy plane and made a straight dive downward and the purr of the machine gun could be heard above the buzz of the motor. The fight was desperate. “The American plane was seen to careen then come to earth in a wooded spot. Break-
ing all army rules, the St. Charles lad rushed to take the flier from the flaming plane and saw the pilot was a cousin. He died two hours later in the hospital saying, ‘They never got me.’ “
‘The most important event in recent history’ Yet, while England and France already have begun to mark the 100th anniversary with various events and remembrances, many in the United States do not seem to have similar interest. According to a local history professor,
that would not be unusual as most of the war was fought in Europe, and the U.S. entered late. Elgin Community College history professor Tim Malone said by the time the United States was involved in World War I, the tide had already turned, he said. And for Americans, World War II has more significance. But geography and politics aside, Malone said the impact of World War I should not be underestimated. “World War I is the most important event in recent history
in historical terms,” Malone said. “It’s more important an event than World War II. Historians are always looking for events that changed everything. World War I changed everything.” One way of gauging this war’s effect on the world is to see what it changed, he said. “World War I was the beginning of the end of the English empire and the French empire. France was never the same. England was never the same,” Malone said. “It destroyed the Austrian empire, the Czars of Russia – the Romanovs – the kings of Hohenzollern who ruled Prussia and became the emperors of Germany. The sultanate of the Ottoman empire that ruled Constantinople for 500 years was destroyed,” Malone said. “World War I destroyed the

were starting, Malone said, using machine guns, airplanes and trench warfare. “It was a kind of a monster that arose. And no one saw it coming, and it consumed them,” Malone said. “They bumbled into it, and it had a life of its own. They were not looking for what they got.” As for the U.S. involvement, Malone said he agreed with author Walter Karp, whose analysis was that Wilson led
rope’s rush to war also was precipitated by an arms race that followed a conflict between France and Germany. “The last biggest war was the Franco-Prussian war that ended in 1871,” Powers said. “The European nations were anticipating another war. There is a romanticism of war, an anticipation and excitement,” Powers said. “We contrast those poems with other writings at the end of the war and see a huge shift in attitude. The discourse becomes very pessimistic.”

Hickory Knolls Discovery Center hosts Portraits in Park fundraiser By CAROL HAGGAS stcharlesrepublican@shawmedia.com Looking for a picture-perfect spot for your next family photo? Wish you could have a professional photographer take that photo for this year’s Christmas card or holiday gift? If so, then Hickory Knolls Discovery Center is the place for you. With its stunning array of native plants, trees blazing with seasonal color and variety of scenic vistas, there is no better backdrop for a memorable photo than this serene setting just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of downtown and the suburban shopping centers. Why sit in a studio when you can relax in the tranquil outdoors? Now in its third year, the St. Charles Park Foundation’s Portraits in the Park fundraiser helps support the Park District’s financial aid for deserving families program. On Saturday, Sept. 6; Sunday, Sept. 7; and again on Saturday, Sept. 13, Trademan Photography, one of the area’s premier photographic studios, will be on hand at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center to offer a professional-quality photo session – at a fraction of regular studio costs. Sessions run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In case of rain,
the event will move indoors to an equally photogenic setting. Valued at approximately $150, the 20-minute session is being offered for only $30 – a whopping $120 savings. Groupings of up to six individuals can be accommodated, making it a perfect opportunity for family groupings, newly engaged couples or to capture the joy and whimsy of just the kids being kids all on their own. Four-footed furry members also are welcome to join in the fun. Nor are the sessions limited to family groups only. Maybe your knitting group or book club would like a special way of commemorating a year of good friends and good times. Get any group you’d like together to create a scrapbook-worthy memory. Each session must be booked in advance. Registration will be taken through the park district’s registration system, online at stcparks.org. Each booking will receive one unmounted 11-by-14 photograph, and early registrants also will receive a 5-by-7 plexiglass frame. About a week to 10 days after the photo shoot, participants will
be contacted by Trademan Photography to view their photographs and make final selections. Trademan Photographers offer deeply discounted pricing for print packages of multiple-sized prints that could result in savings of up to 60 percent off regular package prices. As a fundraiser for the St. Charles Park Foundation, two-thirds of the Portraits in the Park session fees will go directly to the Park District’s financial aid program, which was established by the park board to assist economically disadvantaged youth and families residing within the district’s boundaries. Qualified applicants may receive up to $125 in funds per season ($500 annually) to offset the cost of registering for any of the district’s programs, from preschool and after-school programs for children of working parents, for example, to skill-based classes at the Adult Activity Center for parents. Since the program was established in 1984, requests from the community have increased annually. During the past two years, more than $13,000 has been awarded to deserving participants. So, this is your chance to do good by looking good – and capturing it on camera!

The Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, is accused of allowing alcohol purchased there to be consumed

with alcohol from his business concealed drinks as they were leaving. Milligan made a comparison to shoplifting statistics, indicating not all people that sneak away with something are caught. Commission members said Milligan made the shoplifting comparison before when he was before them for a violation in 2013. They said the police report indicates the people were from out of town, were not aware of the local laws and therefore did not make any attempt to conceal the alcohol. Any announcement of penalties for the establishments would be issued within seven to 10 days, Rogina said after the meeting adjourned.

He told commission members he tried to make contact with the 21-year-old woman cited June 1 outside the Alibi for open alcohol in a public place, but he discovered she no longer lives at her listed address in the police report. He also denies he opened a rear door at the Alibi during the incident, reached out and grabbed a drink from an outside ledge and attempted to pull it into the bar before he was stopped by police. Milligan did not dispute the July 10 incident happened outside his business, but he said the people who were found

ECC employees receive pay raises By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com
CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH
ELGIN – Pay raises are coming to about 400 Elgin Community College employees. The Board of Trustees on Aug. 12 approved a three-year contract agreement with the Support Staff of Elgin Community College Association, thus completing negotiations that began in April, according to a news release from the college. The union’s contract expired June 30. In a written statement, Board Chair Donna Redmer said the trustees are pleased to have a new agreement with the support staff union. “Both teams put a lot of time and effort into negotiations to reach a fair agreement for both sides,” she said.
The parties previously agreed to a tentative contract July 16. At that time, union president Robert Treadwell described the agreement as one in which all members will recognize benefits. The union ratified the agreement at the end of July, according to the release. The contract includes a 3.65 percent increase in 2014, a 3.75 percent increase in 2015 and a 4 percent increase in 2016 according to the release. Members in the lowest salary grades will received an additional increase, bringing them to at least a minimum hourly wage of $10.50, the release states. “I am pleased we were able to raise the minimum wage for employees at ECC,” ECC President David Sam said
in a written statement.“Our support staff union members are a vital part of providing a world-class educational experience for our students.” Members of the support staff union work in a variety of positions in numerous departments on campus, including student life, athletics, IT and communications, Executive Director of Communications Jeff Julian said in an email. He noted positions include coordinators, specialists, custodians and food service workers. Changes in payment for health and dental insurance also are planned so that union members will take on a greater share of the cost of their coverage, according to the release. They reportedly will pay
11 percent of the cost in year one, 12 percent in year two and 13 percent in year three. Under their previous threeyear contract, they contributed 5 percent, 7.5 percent and 10 percent of the expense, respectively. For family coverage, the release states, the contribution rate will increase to 21 percent in the second year and 22 percent in the third year. The current rate is 20 percent. The increase in compensation will cost ECC $2.92 million over the three-year period, according to the release. The college’s total budget is $137 million for fiscal year 2014. ECC reports the complete agreement will be available at www.elgin.edu. It will expire June 30, 2017.

Injuries to the eye are the most common preventable cause of blindness, which should lead parents to err on the side of caution when it comes to having their children wear protective eyewear. Kids are susceptible to sports-related eye injuries because their hand-eye coordination has not yet fully developed. With this in mind, make sure that your child wears the proper protection for games and practices. For instance, for a sport like baseball, a batting helmet and a pair of polycarbonate eye protectors approved by the American Society for Testing Materials or by the Protective Eyewear Certification Council are recommended. It also helps to cultivate good habits by having your child wear sunglasses and a hat on sunny days outdoors. P.S. If your child gets foreign matter in his or her eye, do not try to remove it by any other means than flushing with water because of the risk of scratching the surface of the eye, especially the cornea.

Panera Bread to move for drive-thru
The Republican • KCChronicle.com • Thursday, August 21, 2014 • KAN
By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Panera Bread at 1492 S. Randall Road plans to relocate to the now closed Applebee’s restaurant, 1690 S. Randall Road, in order to have enough room to put in a drive-thru, a company spokesman said. The move would not happen until next summer, said Eve Metheny, director of brand marketing for Hamra Enterprises, which operates 33 Panera Bread cafes in the Chicago area. “With Midwest weather – real winter – especially with
families,” Metheny said. “If you have two kids and a mom you want convenience. You don’t want them not to visit because they have kids or it’s a winter day.” Metheny said she did not know if the 5,000-square-foot building would have to be remodeled, retrofitted or torn down to be repurposed for Panera. “It’s a great building,” Metheny said. “I think it’s a great location. The current one has limited parking during lunch and dinner, our peak time. This [new location] will be really great for our customers.”
Businessman files lawsuit over Prairie State electric project By ERIC SCHELKOPF
adno=0283119
eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia businessman Joe Marconi on Aug. 19 filed a class-action lawsuit in Kane County Circuit Court over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus. “We filed it because the electric rates in this town are so high,” Marconi said Aug. 19. “Our main objective is to get Batavia out of the contract they signed with Prairie State.” Named in the lawsuit are Indiana Municipal Power Agency; IMPA Service Corp., Raj Rao, president and chief executive officer of IMPA Service Corp. and chairman of the Prairie State Generating Company Management Committee; Chicago-based consulting company Sargent and Lundy LLC; and Skelly and Loy Inc., a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm. “They misled us,” Marconi said. A copy of the suit is posted at the website www.prairiestateenergycampusclassaction. com. Marconi is hosting a community meeting about the lawsuit at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The cities of Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle are named respondents in the suit. In 2005,
the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members. Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said he could not comment on the suit. Batavia aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues. The hike raises electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half-cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax. In addition, the option applies different percentage increases to energy and demand for commercial and industrial customers. City staff had recommended the option. At that time, Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen the option would provide sufficient revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities. Under the option, residents this year will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates, plus a $4-a-month increase to the customer charge. In 2015, residents also will see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates.

A CULINARY MISSION
Gaetano’s Batavia serves a Camembert cheese appetizer.
Gaetano’s Batavia restaurant features Italian fusion recipes By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Above the doorway to Gaetano’s Batavia is scrolled the phrase “with respect to tradition.” That sums up the culinary mission of Gaetano’s Batavia, an Italian fusion restaurant that recently opened at 15 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia in the former space of The Rhino Room. “Not to be disrespectful in any way, but there’s definitely a difference between American-Italian cuisine and Italian cuisine,” said restaurant owner Wendy DiBenedetto, who is married to executive chef Gaetano DiBenedetto. “The American-Italian cuisine that we eat here in America is nothing like the food that’s in Italy. The food that we serve here is like what you are going to eat in Italy. It’s respecting the traditions of the old recipes, and Gaetano putting his own fusion and modern twist on it.” Gaetano DiBenedetto is a native of the coastal town of Bagheria, located just outside of Palermo, Sicily. The couple, who live in Batavia, also have owned Gaetano’s restaurant in Forest Park since 2008. Gaetano’s has been rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the Chicago area. In addition, in 2011 the Italian government awarded Chef Gaetano with the prestigious “Ospitalita Italiana” award for having an “authentic” Italian restaurant. Wendy DiBenedetto attributed the acclaim that Gaetano’s has garnered to her husband. “My husband’s creative genius has a lot to do with that,” she said. “On top of that, he only uses the highest quality level of ingredients that are available on the market. He doesn’t go cheap on anything. We have fresh seafood and fish each day. We do not serve frozen fish here. We make our own bread and pasta, and he is just a talented chef.”
Along with being the restaurant’s executive chef, he also is a jazz guitarist. Diners might catch him playing at the restaurant on occasion. “He played here the other night,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “We had some musicians here ... to celebrate our opening week, and he jammed with them for a little while.” The restaurant plans to have live entertainment at the restaurant once a week starting in the fall. “It will be primarily jazz or classical jazz,” she said. “We do that at our other restaurant, too.” Before opening Gaetano’s Batavia, the couple spent several months renovating the space to meet their needs. For one thing, the space was lacking a kitchen. “There was a room that had a free-standing electric oven and a sink and a cooler, and that was it,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “One of the necessities of our kitchen is a wood-burning oven. Approximately 70 percent of our dishes are cooked all the way in that oven, or they are finished off in that oven somehow. That means steaks, fish, appetizers, lots of dishes.” Gaetano’s Batavia features a wood-burning oven from Prato, Italy. Diners can see their food being prepared as the restaurant features an open kitchen. The restaurant offers a wide variety of Italian dishes, including risotto. “People are crazy about his risotto because it’s so creamy,” she said. “It really takes a lot of skill to make a good risotto.” Another item, Rigatoni alla Trasteverina, features the restaurant’s homemade

Gaetano DiBenedetto also takes great care to make sure the restaurant’s Ribeye di manzo al Fumo is bursting with flavor. “He has a rib eye that he wet ages and dry ages for 21 days,” Wendy DiBenedetto said. “We then cook it in the wood-burning oven.” Couples who want to have a quiet night to themselves but also don’t want to leave their children at home are invited to bring them to the restaurant. The restaurant plans to offer a parents night, where parents can come and enjoy a quiet dinner in the main dining room while Wendy DiBenedetto and a helper have a pizza party and make crafts on the restaurant’s lower level. She said the concept has worked well at their Forest Park location. “They don’t have to hire a babysitter,” she said.
Currently, Gaetano’s Batavia is only open for dinner. “We’d rather focus on dinner and just make it fantastic,” she said. To learn more about Gaetano’s Batavia, call 630-406-3009. More information is available on its Facebook page, “Gaetano’s Batavia.”

Donnie and Marie Osmond will perform Wednesday, Aug. 27, to Sunday, Aug. 31, at The Paramount Theatre in Aurora.
Schelkopf: Tell me about the show. Osmond: The show has been voted best show in Las Vegas three years in a row. This is kind of the Vegas show that we are bringing to Chicago. We were at the Allstate Arena last year for a Christmas show, and it was really fun. But this is a very different show. It is kind of tailored for the venue.
ber “Paper Roses” and “Puppy Love;” some people remember the “Donny & Marie” variety show; some people remember the talk show or our appearances on Broadway. We’ll be doing a little bit of everything. The show is very fun. There’s just a lot of performance. We grew up with what I call some of the great entertainers. We learned some wonderful things, whether it was Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra. We’ve been very blessed to work with some incredible people. Donny and I have kind of that variety thing in our blood, and we leave ourselves on stage.
Schelkopf: So for people not that familiar with the show, what should they expect? Osmond: This year is our fifth decade of performing consistently, so you have five decades of material that will be shoved into the show. People remember you when they last saw you. Some people remem-
Schelkopf: I grew up on the “Donny & Marie” variety show, and it just seems like there always has been a strong connection between you and Donny. What do you think it is? Osmond: The only other brother and sister I knew that performed together were The Carpenters. Maybe everybody relates to that.
Eric Schelkopf: Great to talk to you. I actually interviewed one of your brothers, Jimmy Osmond, last fall, when he was performing in Batavia with his brothers Merrill and Jay. Marie Osmond: Oh, I’m so sorry. No, I’m teasing.
The other thing is that I think we have continued to work hard over the years to stay viable, whether it is performing at The Flamingo in Las Vegas or that I have co-hosted with the ladies at “The Talk.” I write books and am a New York Times bestselling author. I think you have to stay current, and keep working hard. I’ve done shows with other people and I do my own shows, and we both work on our solo careers. But there is a really interesting chemistry between Donny and Marie. Schelkopf: As you said, you are going through five decades in the show. Was it hard to determine what songs to do? Osmond: You’ll see a variety. People want to hear “Paper Roses” and “Puppy Love.” But I even do an operatic piece in the show. So it’s very eclectic and different. There’s something for every age when you come to the show. It really is kind of a walk down five decades.
Schelkopf: And I’m sure you are going to be doing the hit, “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock ‘N Roll.” When you first performed the song, did you ever imagine it would turn into the hit it did? Osmond: Heavens no. Like right now, Too Faced cosmetics has a new campaign out, called ... Country/Rock N Roll, where they use me as the face of the whole cosmetic line. Who knew that the song would be such a hit? I think the show “The Voice” did a whole thing around the song. Donny and I were laughing and saying, ‘Well, I guess we started something, didn’t we?’ Schelkopf: Why do you think the song connected so well with people? Osmond: You know, I don’t know. I was having country hits, and Donny was having adult contemporary hits. I think we have a lot of country music lovers in this country, and I think we have a lot that love rock ’n’ roll. And I think nowadays, they can love both. Schelkopf: You were recently on “The Talk” as a co-host. How was that experience? Osmond: Well, I enjoy television. And the ladies on there are really fun. I think that we kind of blend in. I’m very flattered that they keep asking me back.

A distraction forced Jason Haas to pause midstride. As mud started to gather around a tiny bubbling puddle, Haas, a partner and the general manager at Tablas Creek Vineyard, took notice with a look of concern. An irrigation line to one of the olive trees that line the ascending white gravel road leading to the hillside vineyards sprung a leak. In rain-starved Paso Robles, California, which is in a three-year drought, every drop counts. While Haas made a mental note to tend to the leak, he led a vineyard and winery tour that demonstrated his full grasp and forward-thinking leadership at Tablas Creek. Rather than wasting thousands of plastic water bottles on visitors, Haas has ice cold, refillable and reusable canteens at the entrance. Moments later, with deft touch, he sat at a machine and swiftly grafted a grape vine onto a rootstock. In the tasting room, his handwritten notes were a precise collection of numerous tastings in pursuit of a final blend that is just right. His Twitter handle is @jasonchaas and his running commentary and writing on the Tablas Creek blog is a unique insight into the winery and wine industry. The talented leader at Tablas Creek has an incredible vision and a great portfolio of wines.

A good grafting crew will have a 90 percent success rate. The callous is dipped in melted wax and cold water seals the scar and keeps fungus out. The next stop is the greenhouse where the new vine begins its three-month journey from cozy indoor conditions to the vineyard. In the vineyard, competition is encouraged. In 2005, Tablas Creek began to dry farm 25 to 30 acres with head trained blocks, widely spaced apart to force the vines to work hard to find water. “They’ve always only lived without water, there’s no training involved,” said Haas, who added the practice has naturally produced lower yields. “By August or September you’d have to dig down 5 to 6 feet to find moisture. By October, it might be 8 feet. Vines, like most living things, are lazy. They will go down as far as they need.” While rain came late in the season to Tablas Creek, 7 of the 10 inches they’ve received this year came in March and finally turned the cover crop Winemaker spotlight A steel machine with a foot of oats, vetch, clover and sweet peas green. Wine 101 The walk into the Tablas Creek vineyard is straight uphill where only a thin layer of top soil covers the calcareous earth. Strategic plantings offer each varietal the specific sun aspect they need. The steep, north facing slope has Grenache blanc and syrah – which also is an eastern facing slope – to stay cooler. Mourvedre, Rousanne and Picpoul run down to Tablas Creek on the southeast slope, while Grenache gets a sunny, western facing slope. Even when harvest wraps up and vines are getting ready to go dormant for the winter, Haas marveled at the hearty green canopy of Grenache. “It’s very leafy,” Haas said. “The canopy provides protection and photosynthesis. But it always [looks] healthy and happy. Everything else is red by November. Not Grenache. It’s yellow and green and thinks it’s spring. It grows easy but is also easy to overproduce and end up diluted. Grenache needs warmth and has a thin skin and not too many tannins.”

Doug Ross lends a top-notch anecdote to this, the world’s first “You might be a nomadic coach if …” joke. “I’ll run into somebody 10 years later, and I can’t remember what I remember them from or which sport they played for me because I’ve done so many,” Ross said. As Ross takes the reins of his fifth career sport at Geneva, consider that fair warning to girls golfers he’ll see in future interactions at the supermarket. If counting strokes borders on tedious, though, counting sports always brings a smile. “He’s done a good job in all the sports that he’s had,” Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said, “and I think it’ll be the same thing with golf.” Don’t say Ross isn’t doing something he went to school for. Since 2000, the physical education teacher and major has coached Vikings boys soccer, girls track and boys tennis. In 2009, he continued the racket motif and revived Geneva girls badminton after about a two-decade hiatus. Before his Geneva career, Ross pioneered the boys soccer and boys tennis programs at Neuqua Valley, paving the way for his return to the Tri-Cities, where he started a family. Ross served as Eric Hatczel’s assistant last season but took the head coaching position when Hatczel moved to the boys golf program after Bill Koehn retired. “I’m certainly very excited to be able to take on another head coaching position,” Ross said. “I feel comfortable in that role. I know the girls from last year, so I’m even more comfortable knowing that I know all the kids, so that makes it an even smoother transition.” Ross’ eclectic pursuits mirror his busy Batavia upbringing. He competed in soccer, track and basketball as a Bulldog after balancing those sports with tennis and baseball as a child.

Vikings’ Ross adds golf coach to resume

Geneva High School girls golf coach Doug Ross (left) talks with Geneva assistant athletic director Dave Carli, during tryouts for the school’s team at Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva. He first embraced golf as an adult but plays regularly in leagues. Adding new sports or taking up old ones is a pattern he hopes catches on when athletes complete their high school or college careers. “When you have to cut it down to certain sports in high school, it’s unfortunate you have to make those decisions,” Ross said. “It’s even harder for kids nowadays because compared to 30 years ago, the level of competition has certainly increased, the kids feel like they have to specialize earlier and earlier to even make their high school teams.” As Ross proves, specialization can be a foreign concept for coaches. Last school year, the counterpart at his alma mater, Batavia’s Tim Kauffmann, considered juggling a girls golf assistant position with his
coaching duties in the boys basketball and baseball programs. Not wanting to compromise his time for lesson plans, he stayed with two sports but followed the girls golf team under then-coach Morgan Connell. The first few days of tryouts and practices kept Kauffmann buzzing. “Just watching the kids compete. It’s awesome to see them mature into the great athletes that they are now,” he said. Ross’ coaching pursuits overlapped at times through the years. Of course, the biggest balancing act comes during those chance encounters in public. “It’s a very rewarding experience for me to have coached all of those sports,” Ross said. “I have such a large group of kids Geneva’s Nicole Hassels putts Aug. 13 during tryouts for the school’s that I’ve had experiences with team Wednesday morning at Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva. that I’ll remember forever.”
