Janine Callahan, co-owner of a ShowHomes home staging franchise, places pillows on the bed in the master bedroom at a Campton Hills area home currently for sale.

Home staging is valuable tool in real estate market By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Katie Meisenger looked twice at a Batavia home for sale in 2013, but she could not see herself and her family living there. Meisenger wanted to move her family from a smaller space in North Aurora and had her eyes on a nearly 5,000-square-foot home in the Tanglewood Hills subdivision on the city’s west side. Since the home was vacant, all she could see was the wear and tear until Showhomes, a home staging company, worked on the space. “The Realtor took us in the third time, and that’s really when it came alive,” Meisenger said. The furniture, hanging pictures and other decorative accents added to every

room gave the home a certain warmth and sparked ideas for what she could do with the space. Two days later, Meisenger and her husband put in an offer, and they have lived there with their three children since November. The Meisengers’ story is one of many that demonstrate the benefit of home staging. Staging involves strategically changing the appearance of a home to make it look more desirable in the hopes a buyer will make an offer. Home staging can bring in 10 percent more offers and speed home sales up to 78 percent faster compared to homes that are vacant, according to the Real Estate Staging Association 2012 Annual Report. The number locally is generally 50 percent faster, said Mike Callahan, owner of the Showhomes Fox Valley franchise

with his wife, Janine. “The idea of real estate is to give that impression of a perfect home that everyone wants but no one really has,” said Tiffany Riehle, a real estate broker with the Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate office in St. Charles. “You’re trying to show buyers what could be in that space.” Riehle said she almost always refers sellers to St. Charles-based Finishing Touches Interior Design, which offers staging services. She said she and other brokers turn more often to home staging in the current real estate market. Homes are selling close to their list price and receiving multiple offers from buyers, Riehle said. Since buyers can be pickier, staging can be helpful to set a property apart from others, she said.

Home staging companies contract directly with sellers, and real estate brokers see them as valuable to their marketing, said Margaret Gehr, owner of Chicagoland Home Staging. The way homes look on a computer screen is important, especially in today’s digital age, Gehr said. Gehr said a home staging project typically involves a consultation that involves going room by room and deciding on an action plan. Staging companies either will redesign rooms using the home’s existing furnishings or bring in their own. Showhomes will contract with people to actually live in staged homes. “An occupied home looks better, feels better and smells better,” Mike Callahan said. As of earlier this month, the

Callahans themselves were living in an 8,000-square-foot staged home since October in the Crane Road Estate neighborhood in St. Charles Township. They have lived in about 10 houses since they sold their Batavia home and purchased the franchise in December 2008 in the midst of the recession. Mike Callahan uses his mortgage banking background, and Janine Callahan uses her decorating background to lead a team of eight people. They figure they eventually will go back to a permanent home, but they call the current phase in their lives an adventure. “The results for the homeowner just bear out time and time again,” Mike Callahan said of home staging. “It’s a wonderful tool for them to utilize.”

7 BOOMERS GETTING CATARACT SURGERY SOONER According to the National Eye Institute, nearly half of all U.S. adults either have a cataract or have undergone cataract surgery by age 80. However, increasing numbers of Baby Boomers are not waiting that long to have their clouded eye lenses surgically removed and replaced with clear, manmade, intraocular lenses. The reason behind this earlier surgical intervention has to do with the fact that many people begin developing cataracts in their forties. Once they become aware that their symptoms of hazy vision and glare from lights are caused by cataracts, they choose to do something about it. Thus, more patients in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are electing to undergo cataract surgery instead of waiting. P.S. Undergoing cataract surgery is a personal decision that varies according to the individual. When you decide that your cataract-impaired vision is not as sharp as you would like it to be, it’s time.

ST. CHARLES – More than half of the remaining ash trees in city-owned rights of way in St. Charles will be removed this fall based on their conditions, said Chris Adesso, the city’s public services manager. Adesso gave the city’s Government Services Committee an update Aug. 25 on the 326 remaining and standing ash trees. The trees earlier this year in the spring were ranked into four categories ranging from mostly dead trees to trees that showed no signs of the emerald ash borer. The spring inventory results showed 47 trees were 90 to 100 percent dead, and 134 trees were 50 to 90 percent dead. “We would like to move forward with the removal of the 181 trees,” Adesso said. Of the 181 trees that will be

removed this fall, 99 of them are located in the northeastern part of the city, Adesso said. The trees will be removed by Skyline Tree Services, which is currently under contract with the city. Skyline’s three-year contract was approved in 2012 and project costs are budgeted, including the most recent cost of $64,000. The city also has an existing contract for ash tree replacement, Adesso said. Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis asked about the survival rate of replacement trees that were planted. Adesso gave an mortality rate estimate of 5 percent for the trees. Second Ward Alderman Art Lemke asked how often a resident should fill the tree watering bags. Adesso said the bags should be filled whenever they are empty because they are designed for slow-release watering as needed.

10 Dance Academy programs, pricing have dancers jumping for joy performance opportunities. Girls love performing, so the more opportunities we can find for them, the better.” The performances also will give dancers more confidence and poise going into upcoming competitions such as Dance Idol and those conducted by other Park Districts in the Chicago suburbs. Of course, behind every accomplished dancer is an inspiring teacher, and Weaver is thrilled to be introducing three new instructors to the staff this year to join veteran Dance Coordinator Mary Trinco. A current member of the academy’s Company Dance team, high school student Allison Cole will be teaching beginning ballet to 5- and 6-year-olds. “I love being able to hire instructors who come from our program because we know we’ve trained them properly,” said Weaver. In addition to Cole, Samantha Newman will be teaching tap classes at all levels, and Gina Gerardi will teach hiphop, jazz and ballet/tap combo classes. “I am very excited about our staff,” said Weaver. “The key to having a successful program is having great teachers. We’re able to provide highly trained instructors at an affordable rate.” Indeed, affordability is the third element in the changes Weaver has instituted to this year’s dance program. Monthly payment plan options are available for year-long classes that run September through May, and a 10 percent discount off the total registration is available when registering a child for two or more classes in the dance recital program. This encourages students to try out more than one discipline, said Weaver. So whether a dancer just does it for kicks or wants to dance up a storm, the park district’s Dance Academy roster of classes offers something for dancers of all ages and all levels. As the popular TV show asks, “So, you think you can dance?” Come out to the St. Charles Park District and find out.

Desert Snow, LLC has conducted intense and relevant criminal and terrorist apprehension training since 1989. Desert Snow is a primary trainer of the United States Customs and Border Patrol

and is internationally recognized as a leader in the education and networking of local police officers, state law enforcement and federal agents, the release said. The United States Border Patrol Campo Station Abatement Team reported the seizure of $20,000, as well as multiple seizures totaling 258 pounds of drugs with a total estimated value of over $2.3 million, after two weeks of applying tactics from a Desert Storm training, according to the release. Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse is a nonprofit namesake cause in memory of St. Charles resident Chris Foley, who died of a heroin overdose in 2007. His mother, Vicki Foley, is president of Chris Walk and a Shaw Media employee. The mission of Chris Walk is to secure funding for heroin abuse prevention and provide support to those dealing with addiction. For information, visit www.chriswalk.net.

GENEVA – Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010, but educators, parents and school officials are still wary of what it means for their students, according to a roundtable discussion Aug. 25 hosted by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield. New Illinois State Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core establishes new standards for math and English language arts; provides consistent learning expectations for students; and provides higher, clearer, deeper, real-life learning for college and career. Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, four territories and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core Standards, according to www. corestandards.org. “Several states have slowed it down,” Hultgren said of the Common Core standards being implemented. “I think it’s an important thing

to talk about. I also wanted to see how we could work together … and help facilitate conversations of what is working well, what’s not … and how to achieve the goal all of us have: the best possible education for our kids.” Those participating in the 90-minute roundtable discussion were Pam Reilly, a second-grade teacher from Sandwich who was 2013 Illinois Teacher of the Year; Kane County Regional Superintendent Patricia Dal Santo; Waubonsee Community College President Christine Sobek; St. Charles School District 303 Board president Steven Spurling and member Judith McConnell; and two St. Charles mothers: Michelle Pollard, a homeschool parent of five, and Joyce Palignoff, a parent of three. “The Common Core is not a curriculum; it’s standards and you design your curriculum to meet those standards,” Dal Santo said. The standards are what children should know at each grade level before moving on

to the next level, Dal Santo said. Each school district decides how to accomplish those standards, adopting textbooks to help accomplish that. An opponent of Common Core, McConnell said Shakespeare was the only English author included in the standards. “It’s frightening,” McConnell said. But Del Santo said the standards do not stop a school district from adopting a curriculum that includes other English authors. Reilly said as she has traveled Illinois, teachers are concerned with how the student assessment will be done when they will be judged on the outcome. “I feel like the conversation needs to continue,” Reilly said. “In second grade, I know the destination they need before they move to a thirdgrade classroom. Common Core gives me the autonomy to teach those skills. Some districts are getting there in a Cadillac and others [in a car] with three wheels and no gas but are expected to reach the same destination.” Pollard said it will take at least three years to get some success from implementing the standards, and she felt sorry for students who will be caught in the shuffle. McConnell said the only way to fight it is for superintendents to band together and refuse to implement it. “It is scary to me,” McConnell said. “And it’s an outrage.”

Batavia author makes fiction come to life W. Ward Neuman has penned successful action tales By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The true life story of hijackers who robbed a busload of tourists in Guatemala provided the inspiration for Batavia resident W. Ward Neuman’s first venture into writing a novel. His sister was among those tourists on the bus. Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf spoke to Neuman about his book “Seeking Justice,” which revolves around three millionaires who decide to use their energy, determination, and resources to help others solve the problems and injustices that “the system” cannot.

leaned back and said, ‘Wow, I did it.’ Then I got it published and I started getting feedback from people. Some people thought the book should be made into a movie. A couple of people said they couldn’t put it down. A lot of people said it should be a television series. And many, many people asked when there was going to be a sequel. I kind of left a couple of things hanging in the book, which gave me room to do something I wasn’t planning to do. I wrote the second one, and I realized I was having fun. My publisher asked me to write a third book (“Delivering Justice”) since the other ones had done well, and now I have done three. The big question now is do I do a fourth or not? At the moment, I’m saying I don’t think so, but that could change.

Eric Schelkopf: Your first book was based on an actual incident involving your sister. W. Ward Neuman: Well, it’s kind of a funny thing. She got over it. She was never actually traumatized. She was more angry and saddened at the loss of her things of value. I was the one who got really upset about it, thinking that people exist who can go out and do that. And apparently, they were doing it again and again. And obviously with corruption and graft and bribes, they were getting away with it. It stayed in my mind for a long time and then I started writing about it. And it was like a catharsis. Schelkopf: Was this an idea that you had even before this incident? Neuman: No. I had been an author before. I had written three non-fiction books in my field of investing in real estate. I was in demand at seminars and conventions and investment clubs. And after being successful at writing those three books, I had the idea of writing fiction. The thing about most fiction is that there is generally one story – the hero is going after a bad guy and it takes the whole book to unravel the plot and get to the end, where he gets his just

Batavia resident W. My books are different, because there’s seven or eight situations or adventures in each book, where my guys hear about different people not receiving justice from the system after they’ve been wronged in different ways.

So, there’s lot of stories contained in the book, each time leading up to a grand finale of a great big story. Schelkopf: And then you wrote a sequel, “Finding Justice.” How did that come about? Neuman: I finished the book, and I

Schelkopf: Why do you think the books have connected so well with people? Neuman: Well, I can’t say that I’m a brilliant writer like Ernest Hemingway. He had a flair and a way with words. But I make the plots interesting and I make the characters believable. A couple of the nicest compliments I have had from people is when they say, ‘It may be fiction, but it sure seems real.’ And that’s a really nice compliment to an author.

ST. CHARLES – Kane County has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, but you should make room for one of the latest offerings on St. Charles’ west side. Salsa Verde Mexican Restaurant & Taquería, 1850 Lincoln Highway, St. Charles, offers authentic Mexican food and a fun, colorful atmosphere. The restaurant immediately sets the tone for its diners with the bright lime green exterior of its building. On the inside, you’ll find all of the traditional Mexican restaurant staples, along with a salsa bar that includes eight different choices prepared daily. A group of friends and I decided to dine in during a recent August lunch hour. We were greeted to the sounds of the Dominican Republic guitar music known as bachata, an impressive color picture menu board and one of the courteous owners, who was manning a cash register. While we waited a few minutes for our orders to come out, we snacked on great-tasting chips and a hearty mild salsa. We also sampled some of the salsa bar, including the one the restaurant is named for. Don’t let the creamy texture of the green salsa – “salsa verde” in Spanish – fool you, it is quite spicy and you will only need a smidgen of it to give your dishes a kick. Speaking of dishes, I skipped the standard carne asada and instead ordered the Carne a la Mexicana after the owner recommended it. This meant my skirt steak would be served with grilled vegetables, red sauce and cheese. The steak was tender and the sauce, cheese and veggies added layer upon layer of flavor to my lunch. The standard sides of refried beans and authentic red rice did not disappoint either. It was well worth the extra $2.50 over the $9.49 carne asada. Those two carne dishes are part of the restaurant’s specialties menu, which ranges

Nettles: Which is super exciting. I have places that I tend to lean and go melodically, that while I love them and enjoy doing them, I can get bored with them. So for me I think it’s important to have diversity in my co-writing so I can learn from all these wonderful, great people and also to create a diverse album of work, too.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com After garnering success and accolades as the lead singer for country music duo Sugarland, Jennifer Nettles this year released a solo album, “That Girl,” and is touring the country in support of it. Nettles will perform Friday, Aug. 29, at RiverEdge Park in Aurora with Brandy Clark and the Indigo Girls. For information, visit RiverEdge’s website, www.riveredgeaurora.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the change to talk to Nettles about the album and tour. Eric Schelkopf: How have people been responding to your new songs on the tour? Jennifer Nettles: Overall, the response for the new album and the whole project has been really, really positive. It is an opportunity to sort of redefine and recreate myself, and reintroduce myself musically, which is super fun. It’s been great to go and play venues that support sort of the nuance and the intimacy of this album. And I’ve been having a blast doing it, so it’s good. Johnny Rivers to perform hits at the Arcada Theatre Johnny Rivers’ distinct guitar playing on the song “Secret Agent Man” helped make the song a hit. Rivers, who has had a string of hits in his lifetime, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. Tickets are available by calling 888-695-0888, or by going to the Arcada’s website, www.oshows.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Rivers about the upcoming show. Eric Schelkopf: For people who come out to the show, what should they expect? Are you kind of going through the hits and then some? Johnny Rivers: Well, you know, you always have to play the hits. But we always put in a lot of cuts from various albums, and I do a little acoustic set in the middle of the show. It should be fun. We have some new arrangements on some of the old hits. It’s just a four-piece band – guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. It’s really kind of fun, because it’s just the basic rhythm section. Schelkopf: But you like being just a four-piece? Rivers: Well, it’s real comfortable for me. And I’m the guy who played guitar on most of those old records anyhow, so it’s easy for me. Schelkopf: At age 15, you met disc jockey Alan Freed, known for coining the phrase “rock ‘n’ roll,” who convinced you to change your last name. Rivers: On my first record,

I was using my family name, Ramistella. Back in those days, it wasn’t cool to have a long ethnic name. Everybody had shortened their name. He asked me where I grew up, and I told him Baton Rouge, which is on the Mississippi River. He says, ‘Why don’t we call you Johnny River?’ It became Rivers. But my dad didn’t like it. He wanted me to keep the family name. He really didn’t care for it until I had my first big hit. Schelkopf: And I’m sure you will be playing “Secret Agent Man” at the Arcada. Rivers: I have young guitar players come up to me who have said they learned guitar playing “Secret Agent Man,” including Eddie Van Halen. That’s a pretty good compliment. But I also played the guitar on all those other records, “Memphis” and “Seventh Son” and “Mountain Of Love.” I came up with some interesting guitar riffs that were recognizable, especially the openings. Schelkopf: Out of all your accomplishments, is there anything you are most proud of? Rivers: Just everything. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’ve worked with a lot of other artists. I was one of the guys who put together the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and performed on it the first night along with Simon & Garfunkel. That was the first music festival. After that, they did Woodstock and started doing festivals everywhere. But it was nice to be part of that first one, which went off without a hitch. No one got arrested, no one died and no one went to jail.

SPORTS Players to watch Lianne Anderson, St. Charles North, Sr. Anderson is the lone senior vying for a spot in the No. 1 doubles lineup amid a talented cluster of contenders for the North Stars.

Stronger in pairs

Megan Conlin, Rosary, Sr. Conlin will look to re-establish herself as an anchor in Rosary’s lineup after the graduation of former doubles partner Andrea Goyao. Kirby Einck, Geneva, Sr. Einck, back-to-back Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year, notched four victories at the IHSA State Tournament as a junior. Grace Krueger, Geneva, So. After earning an IHSA State Tournament berth as a freshman, Krueger served notice she will be a force as her career unfolds. Nora McClure, Batavia, Sr. McClure returns to top Batavia’s singles lineup on the heels of a 24win junior season and IHSA State Tournament qualification. Sammie Schrepferman, Kaneland, Sr. Schrepferman will anchor the senior-loaded Knights at No. 1 singles after a junior season that included a second-place sectionals finish and three wins at the IHSA State Tournament. Jaci Spoerl, St. Charles East, Sr. Spoerl, who has committed to play college tennis at Division-II Ohio Dominican, should lead the way on East’s new courts as former assistant Matt Bulman takes over the girls program for Sena Drawer. Madi Jurcenko (Sr.) and Jelly Emmanouil (Sr.), Kaneland After advancing to the fifth round in consolation play of the state tournament as juniors, the area’s most seasoned and accomplished tandem is poised for a banner final go-around. Julianne Robinson (So.) and Sydnee Unterberg (Sr.), Batavia Robinson, a conference champion at No. 3 doubles last season, looks to ascend in Batavia’s doubles hierarchy to team with Unterberg, a returning doubles state qualifier.

St. Charles North girls tennis doubles options intriguing By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls tennis coach Eve Tubman jokes that she “likes to send her lineup into the blender every so often.” Whatever the mixing and matching churns out in the upper half of her doubles lineup, Tubman is confident the final product should serve the North Stars well. North’s season was scheduled to begin Aug. 26 with a match at Metea Valley. Consider the first few weeks open auditions for spots in Tubman’s lineup, where some combination of senior Lianne Anderson and juniors Brittany Rohrsen, Emma Spellman and Morgan Rerko are likely to compose what projects as the team’s overall strength – No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Three of the four were big pieces for North last season, with Rerko’s sophomore season marred by a wrist injury.

“They really all have some great, different skills,” Tubman said. “Emma has a big serve and some big groundstrokes. Brittany’s like a workhorse and just is very steady. Lianne has a huge backhand and is very competitive. And Morgan has such great footwork. “And I want the girls to have fun, but I want them to take care of business first, so personalities are going to come into that.” Anderson and Rerko both have substantial histories playing alongside Rohrsen. Anderson and Rohrsen played No. 1 doubles together for much of last season and would like to play with Rohrsen again – or at least somebody who possesses many of her qualities. “We had a lot of long matches that were pretty close last year, and she’s the one that energizes me mostly, and I need someone like that,” said Anderson, hunting her

first IHSA State Tournament berth as a senior. “Also someone with a strong forehand because I like my backhand a lot better.” Rerko’s history with Rohrsen extends further back. “We played together freshman year on varsity, and we won conference for 4 doubles and we just play really well together,” Rerko said. “Unfortunately last year I couldn’t play with her because of my wrist, but I’m hoping to play with her or Emma Spellman in doubles and if not, I can also see myself playing singles. But doubles is my go-to.” Rerko’s return to form is one of the top causes for optimism that North could be more competitive this fall with Tri-Cities powers Batavia and Geneva, plus rival St. Charles East. A soccer injury resulted in broken bones in Rerko’s left wrist that sidelined her for most of last tennis season.

When she returned in the season’s final weeks, she was wearing a brace that made her less comfortable, and her confidence was shaken. “I would always be so scared to hit anything,” Rerko said. “I just felt mentally weak and physically weak. But that’s changed over the past year.” Even if North excels at 1 and 2 doubles as Tubman envisions, more points will be needed to score team victories. Sarah Oshana and Mackenzie Solomon should be part of the doubles depth solution as North grooms several new singles prospects. Finding wins at the lower end of the singles and doubles spectrums loom large. “I think our goal at least is to make all the doubles slots pretty strong this year and then work on our singles players so next year they have some experience behind them that will help them later,” Anderson said.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created. This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary. By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in. Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League. The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances. Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the first female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.
