3 NEWS |

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When David LeVan earlier this year appeared in an American Airlines in-flight video and magazine, friends all over the country took notice. LeVan’s pals would take a picture of the video and message him that David LeVan they saw him. When LeVan, 49, was on the flight himself, some of his fellow passengers would gawk. “One girl looked at the magazine, then looked back at me and told another girl, ‘I’m telling you that’s the guy,’” said LeVan, a Campton Hills resident. LeVan’s image became a regular fixture on American Airlines flights after he became the second-place winner of American Airlines’ 12th annual American Way Road

Warrior Contest in 2013. LeVan beat out thousands of other contestants to receive thousands of AAdvantage miles for future flights. He and the other top-four finalists were flown to the Caribbean island of Curaçao in January for a video and photo shoot. The contest requires entrants to answer multiple essay questions about themselves, and LeVan had picked up some of his writings from years earlier to complete the application. He did not expect to be picked as one of the finalists, let alone to be notified during a business trip. “I was absolutely shocked,” LeVan said. LeVan estimates during the past few years he has logged between 105,000 and 110,000 miles on airplane flights. He has a goal called “50-by-50by-50” where he plans to visit 50 countries and all 50 states by the time he turns 50 in March. In July, he was able to get to North Dakota, the last

state on the list. He’s visited 44 countries and counting. A large portion of LeVan’s airtime comes from business trips within the U.S. for his company Advantax, a corporate property-tax consulting firm. LeVan founded the company in 1994 when he lived in Wheaton, and its headquarters has always been located at the Timbers Professional Center, 200 W. River Drive, St. Charles. LeVan also spends three to four weeks a year with Serve the World, an initiative established by First Baptist Church of Geneva to identify local and global partners and connect them with resources. Recent projects include a home for disabled young men in Ukraine and a skate park-based church in Ecuador. Bruce McEvoy, pastor of family and service at First Baptist, said LeVan’s compassion has been an influence on his life. McEvoy has joined LeVan on some of the Serve the World trips.

“His motivation is not to experience it for experience’s sake, his motivation is to step into opportunities to make a difference,” McEvoy said of LeVan. LeVan even started a charity of his own, Harriette’s Song, in 2007, which is focused on helping children. In the past year, the group helped build a small orphanage in Nigeria called Grandmother’s House, which pairs children whose parents have died of AIDS with a grandparent. A portion of Advantax’s bottom line every quarter goes toward Harriette’s Song, LeVan said. LeVan might seem like a busy traveler now, but that was not always the case. Before his son graduated from high school, LeVan said he took fewer trips so he could be one of those parents who could be there for all the school sports games and events. “My traveling is not more important than my relationship with God and my relationship with family,” LeVan said.

Through Hickory Knolls Discovery Center’s Featured Local Artists program, the St. Charles Park District celebrates artists and nature. “As a nature center, we want to focus on natural items – animals, plants, landscapes – anything that is nature-oriented,” said Lauren Kulinski, nature programs supervisor.

Hickory Knolls Discovery Center celebrates beauty of art in nature By CAROL HAGGAS stcharlesrepublican@shawmedia.com “To any artist, worthy of the name, all in nature is beautiful,” said Auguste Rodin. From the Piet Mondrian-esque patterns in the wings of a butterfly to the textured dots of color that give an impressionistic cast to a springtime prairie meadow, there is infinite beauty in the natural world around us. And for local artists who employ Mother Nature as their muse, the natural world right here at home teams with all manner of inspiring subjects: Migrating waterfowl nesting in our intricate network of wetlands, cunning foxes and coyotes roaming the savannas and prairies, the gnarled bark and sinewy limbs of ancient oak trees dotting woodlands and forests, wildflowers glisten-

ing in early morning light. Inspiration enough for an artist to launch his or her own exhibition. And what better place to exhibit that nature-inspired artwork than at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center? Through the center’s Featured Local Artists program, the St. Charles Park District celebrates not only the wealth

KING OF THE CHEESY BEEF

As people get older, they come to recognize that they are at greater risk for developing cataracts and glaucoma. However, relatively few seniors understand that “age-related macular degeneration” (AMD) affects more than 9 million Americans and continues to be the leading cause of visual impairment in the United States. According to recent research that tracked vision loss in nearly 5,000 patients over two decades, AMD is still responsible for severe vision loss in about 15 percent of Americans aged 85 years and older despite advances in prevention and treatment. Early symptoms of the more common “dry” form of AMD include poor adaptation to dim light, while the less common “wet” form of the disease produces wavy and blurred vision. P.S. While there is no cure for either “dry” or “wet” AMD, early diagnosis through a comprehensive eye exam may help preserve vision.

and diversity of natural beauty to be found in our own backyards – literally and figuratively – but also showcases the talent of area artists who use that natural beauty as the subject matter for the work they create. “We have two main goals in selecting art for our exhibits,” said Lauren Kulinski, nature programs supervisor. “We’re a green facility, so we prefer working with local artists who don’t have to drive far, either to find their source of inspiration or to participate in the exhibit.” The other criterion, Kulinski noted, is subject matter. “As a nature center, we want to focus on natural items – animals, plants, landscapes – anything that is nature-oriented. If the subject matter is located in St. Charles, great. If it’s in our Park District, that’s amazing. If it’s even just in Kane County or the greater Chicago area, that’s cool.” Exhibits at the Discovery Center run for three months in the center’s Twinleaf East Room. Artists provide samples of work, either via an email attachment, link to their website or by submitting a portfolio to Kulinski and the Hickory Knolls staff. Art can be done in any medium, from photography to watercolor. Once selected for an exhibition, the artist is responsible for installing his or her artwork and providing any identifying labeling for each piece, according to guidelines established by the center. Hickory Knolls Discovery Center has been showcasing the work of local artists through these three-month exhibitions since 2012. Four artists per year can participate, and the center has welcomed two repeat exhibitors. Currently, the center has booked exhibits through mid-2015.

“We hope to inspire local artists to think locally in their choice of subject matter,” said Kulinski. “Our center’s motto is, ‘You Don’t Know What You’ve Got,’ and for artists, we want to get them thinking about what the area has to offer and to realize they don’t need to travel to super-exotic places to find something worth painting. There are amazing worlds of beauty right here in our garden plots and natural areas and in your own backyards. It’s just thinking locally and appreciating what you have at your fingertips.” The public is welcome to view exhibitions during regular center hours. While at Hickory Knolls, visitors are encouraged to visit the center’s two permanent art displays. ST. CHARLES – The double row of cars and vans lined up and moved ahead slowly, each loaded with electronics to be disposed of for recycling. Among them were Cathy Blanton of Aurora and Reg Wnek of St. Charles. “I’ve got some small electronics from my son,” Wnek said. At the destination end of the line, 40-plus large boxes were laid end to end as a contingent of workers from an electronic waste collection service dumped old TVs, computers, keyboards, microwaves, stereos, boomboxes and other items from back seats and trunks.

Sept. 13 was Kane County’s free monthly electronics recycling event, hosted the second Saturday of each month at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, by the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s office and branch court. Resource Conservation and Recycling Program Coordinator Jennifer Jarland came by on a bicycle, carrying over her shoulder a big bag of small electronics someone just dropped off instead of getting into the long lines. “We receive an average of 70,000 pounds of electronics per month – four to five semitrucks full,” Jarland said. “But we’ve had as high as 133,500 pounds in June 2014. THANK YOU* *We really appreciate the recognition by U.S.News&World Report that ranks us among Tier 1 National Universities. We share this recognition across the university, with every department and each program. It’s relected in the research our faculty spearhead, the patents we earn, and the awards our students win. We don’t do any of these things for the accolades. We do them because we think there’s no such thing as too ambitious.

BE A GOOD

NEIGHBOR Volunteer.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Closed since February 2012, the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse property is being purchased by the owners of Alley 64 in St. Charles and The Dam Bar and Grill in Geneva. Jeremy Casiello said he, his brother and sister, all co-owners of the two other establishments, now also will own the former gangster-themed eatery at, 35W337 Riverside Drive in St. Charles Township, near Valley View, after a closing that was scheduled for the morning of Sept. 12. Casiello said he would not disclose what they are paying for the property but that the family plans to invest $500,000 to upgrade it, make it fully handicapped-accessible and add an outdoor seating deck so patrons can eat and see the river. “We are going to take possession of it ... and decide what we want to do with it,” Casiello said. “We’re probably going to call it The Hideaway 64, keeping it in line with Alley 64.” Casiello said they decided to buy it after touring the property two months ago during an open house.

“We walked in there and fell in love with the place,” Casiello said. The restaurant closed suddenly in 2012 and the property was in foreclosure. The Casiello partners are buying it from First State Bank of St. Charles. The Hideaway was open for 38 years, leading customers from Route 25 along the Fox River by faded signs to 1920-built speak-easy reportedly built by Chicago’s most famous gangster. Located right on the river, getting to the restaurant required drivers to go up and down hills and hairpin turns in a circuitous route that ended at a steakhouse steeped in bootleg history – right down to original Depression Era-glass windows, blurry with age. The previous owners, Bill Brooks, and his son of the same name, used menus riddled with bullet holes, blood spatters and black-and-white photos of Capone and his Tommy gun – Thompson submachine gun. Entrees included Teresa “Mama” Capone sirloin butt steak and Frank Nitti pork chops, and its wait staff took on gangster nicknames and wore black shirts, ties and fedoras. Its steak dinners includ-

ed a basket of garlic rolls with olive oil for dipping and baked potatoes with nearly a whole stick of butter. Casiello said they likely would maintain the Al Capone gangster theme, but it would be a more affordable, family-friendly restaurant with a bar. He said another plus is the property is unincorporated, which will allow them to offer video gaming. “St. Charles and Geneva opted out [of allowing video gambling], and that hurts us a lot,” Casiello said. “A lot of people are coming here and leaving for South Elgin and North Aurora, leaving our establishments.” Once they have a gaming license, Casiello said they will be able to direct Alley 64 and The Dam Bar and Grill customers to the Hideaway location instead of out of town. He said the family likely would host a grand-opening celebration early next year, depending on the winter construction schedule, and eventually would be hiring 30 to 40 employees. “We are just excited to get in there,” Casiello said. “It’s a landmark in this community that definitely needed to be reopened.”

McMahon to head prosecution committee By ERIC SCHELKOPF

The Republican • KCChronicle.com • Thursday, September 18, 2014 • KAN

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is heading up a new statewide committee that will evaluate and recommend a best practices protocol on specific issues related to investigation and prosecution of serious criminal offenses. “I think there is momentum to develop best practices in criminal prosecution,” McMahon said Sept. 10 during his monthly media briefing. “The goal really is to re-emphasize what our responsibility is in all criminal cases. We want to get it right the first time – to get it right for the victim but also to get it right for the defendant.” Legislation recently was signed by Gov. Pat Quinn establishing a Best Practices Committee within the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor. State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, and Rep. Tom

Cross, R-Oswego, sponsored the legislation. “They both enthusiastically supported it,” McMahon said. The committee will come up with ideas that are more flexible than a legislative mandate, he said. McMahon said legislative mandates “tend to be a one-size-fits-all.” He said the idea has received support from other state’s attorneys across the state. The idea for the committee is based on a national model being promoted by the Bureau of Justice Administration and pioneered in the state of New York. McMahon said the committee will look at such issues as lineup procedures and custodial interrogation. “It is a way for us to sit down face to face and think about those issues,” he said. “This is an opportunity to step up and offer leadership. We are on the front lines of this. We are the ones that have to put investigations together.”

TASTE OF SUCCESS

A wine dispensing area behind the bar at Wildwood in Geneva is seen. The restaurant was recently honored by Wine Spectator Magazine for excellence in wines.

Geneva’s Wildwood receives fourth Wine Spectator Award of Excellence By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With more than 300 wines from around the world in stock, Wildwood restaurant owner and wine director Patrick Neary takes pride in the restaurant having an expansive wine list. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. For the fourth year in a row, the restaurant has been awarded an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine. Wine Spectator bills itself as the world’s leading authority on wine. “It’s been something we’re really proud of,” Neary said. “When I buy the wines, I try and get a representation from California and Europe, along with countries like New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. And we have a good variety of price points. My favorites aren’t always at the highest price. There is a $38 South African wine that has been on my favorite list for a long time, and I recommend it to everyone who comes in if they are looking for something that is a little unique.” Wildwood was the only restaurant in the Tri-Cities area honored this year with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Last year, Atwater’s restaurant in Geneva and The Turf Room in North Aurora were honored by Wine Spectator, along with Wildwood. Wildwood restaurant, located at 477 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in April. Neary, who had been a world traveler in his previous profession, said he wanted to create a place he “would go to when I was traveling the world.” A longtime St. Charles resident, Neary is also a partner in the popular Geneva restaurant Bien Trucha. The Award of Excellence honors those restaurants that “offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style,” according to the magazine.

Wildwood offers more than 300 wines by the bottle and 30 wines by the glass, Neary said. “I think one of the nice things about our list is that it’s expansive, but it also represents a broad level of appeal,” Neary said. “If someone likes a cabernet, they have 35 to choose from. If they like a chardonnay, they have 30 to choose from. So I try to give them a lot and keep a high quality point, too. Most of our wines by the glass are a little higher quality than you will find in many restaurants.” He also follows trends in the wine industry. “The state of Washington is really coming into its own – it has great cabernets and merlots,” Neary said. “I have a lot of state of Washington wines because I try and keep up with those trends and reflect that in my wine list.” In addition, Neary tries to ensure the wines are kept as fresh as possible. Wines that are sold by the glass are kept in a nitrogen system. “You put nitrogen in to keep the oxygen off the wine, and then you use the tapper to pull the wine out,” Neary said. “So when you open a bottle of wine, it could last up to the three weeks without the quality of the wine diminishing. I want people to know that we care about our wine. I want our wine to be fresh. There’s nothing worse than going into a bar and seeing a bottle of wine sitting on a warm shelf with a cork in it.” The restaurant’s wine storage rooms are temperature controlled as well. Neary also wants to educate his customers. Starting this fall, Wildwood restaurant will offer wine classes taught by Neary himself.

“We can share with them not just a nice dining experience, but we can also teach them a little about wine,” Neary said. “One of the classes is going to be on how to taste and evaluate wine. I can help people learn and appreciate wines.

We’ll keep it fun. We’ll taste a little wine; we’ll have some food. We’ll make it a fun night.” More information about Wildwood restaurant is available by going to its website, www.wildwoodsteak.com.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

Eric Schelkopf: I know in November you were in Chicago for Once Upon A Dream, which tells the story of The Rascals. When you were approached with the idea for this show, what did you think of it? How did Steven Van Zandt pitch it to you? Felix Cavaliere: Well, basically what he originally was trying to do was create a reunion. I think the idea for the show came later, rather than that being the initial idea. He sat down with us, and we kind of related some stories, and I think he realized that unless we did something kind of different, that it might not be received as well as if it was like just a bunch of guys getting back on the stage after X amount of years. Schelkopf: Do you think it was an accurate retelling of The Rascals’ story? Cavaliere: I have mixed feelings about it. I think the audiences really enjoyed it. I think they got a taste of something they had been wanting for many years, which was a reunion. For me, I feel that the more creative you are, the less you want to be confined to a script. And that’s the first time in my life I really have been confined to a script. So I found it really inhibiting.

Schelkopf: One of the songs that you probably will be performing at the Arcada is “People Got to Be Free.” I understand you were inspired to write that song after the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Cavaliere: I was very active in working for his campaign. I was dating somebody at the time who was actually there when he was assassinated. It was kind of a revelation to me that it was time to make a statement. In those days, I think that a lot of people, especially people who made music, were more conscious of what was going on around them in the world. We wanted to make some sort of a difference, for better or for worse, on the planet. That’s why the song was written. It was saying: ‘This is where we are coming from. This is what we think.’ And the record company did not like that, because obviously its interests were in sales. Trying to change the world is an interesting thing. The good thing is that in all of the oppressed countries of the world, and in those days, you had Berlin, you had Hong Kong, you had South Africa, that was the No. 1 record. I was really proud of that, because the message reverberated all around the world. As a matter of fact, when they did take the Berlin Wall down, that song was played on the street. Things like that, they just kind of make it worthwhile to be a musician. Schelkopf: It did become a hit, despite the heavy message. Were you grateful that people understood and connected with it?

Cavaliere: Absolutely. You’re always grateful when people listen to your music and accept it, because you never really know. When we first started playing “Good Lovin’” in a club, we got instant gratification, because you’re playing right in front of the people, and they loved it. So, you keep playing it. Schelkopf: “Good Lovin’” – a cover of a song by the group The Olympics – was a No. 1 hit. Did you feel pressure to follow it up? Cavaliere: Well, the tables kind of turned and instead of taking orders from the record company, the record company was taking orders from us. And that’s when it gets really tough, because now you have to compete with some of the best music in the world, coming out of England, for example, as a writer, as well as a performer and recording artist. Schelkopf: You’ve been honored in many ways – you’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame, and Hammond Organ Hall of Fame. Cavaliere: Hammond Organ Hall of Fame is the coolest of them all. That one blew my mind. It’s a really small fraternity. Songwriters Hall of Fame is pretty cool, too. Let’s face it. When all is said and done, to be able to still make music after all these years and have people come and see you, it’s pretty cool. I’d take that over any of those things.

Paramount kicks off season in strong fashion with ‘Cats’ By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

Laura Savage (from left) is Rumpleteaser and Jonny Stein is Mungojerrie in “Cats,” the blockbuster opener of the 2014-15 Broadway subscription series at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown Aurora.

The Paramount Theatre has kicked off its 2014-15 Broadway series in strong fashion with the beloved musical “Cats.” Although the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was first staged in 1981, the Paramount has injected new energy into the musical, based on the poetry of T.S. Eliot. For those not familiar with the musical, “Cats” tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer.

The show is perfectly cast. Sawyer Smith, last seen as Angel in the Paramount’s version of “Rent,” has the charisma needed to handle the role of the biggerthan-life Rum Tum Tugger, even going out into the audience to kiss an unsuspecting woman. One of the stars of the show is someone who is not a stranger to the Paramount stage. Lauren Villegas, who has appeared in such Paramount productions as “In the Heights,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Music Man” and “Annie,” delivers a knockout performance as Grizabella. Along with bringing just the right amount of empathy to the

role, her version of the “Cats” signature song “Memory” will make you forget all others. The musical’s striking scenery and outstanding choreography also play starring roles in this version of “Cats.” The musical is rated “G,” so parents can feel comfortable bringing their kids to this family-friendly show. ‘’Cats’ will run through Sunday, Oct. 12. The Paramount Theatre is located at 23 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown Aurora. Tickets are available by calling the Paramount at 630-896-6666 or visiting its website, www. paramountaurora.com.

The Rascals’ founder Felix Cavaliere was inspired by the assassination of Bobby Kennedy to write “People Got to Be Free,” which went on to become one of the group’s biggest hits. Cavaliere will perform many of the group’s hits when he comes Saturday, Sept. 20, to the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. Also on the bill is The Brooklyn Bridge. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are available by calling 888-695-0888 or at the Arcada’s website, www.oshows.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Cavaliere about the upcoming show.

I have my own band, and we do a whole different type of show. We’re on the opposite side of that formula. We go wild. We use the audience as a kind of barometer. You feel like dancing? OK, we’re going to do some dancing songs. We kind of adapt to the scene a lot more. It’s kind of like an energy that passes between them and us.

Italian sparkling wine you can drink with a meal What started off as a friendly bet, turned into an endeavor into world-class winemaking. Second generation winemaker Arturo Ziliani has carried on a tradition that started in eastern Italy in 1961. Berlucchi became the first winery in Franciacarta to make sparkling wine in the classic method, where the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle. Today their wine label boasts the number 61. The terroir and mastery of the method continue as Berlucchi crafts sparkling wine with depth, character and complexity.

Winemaker spotlight Franco Ziliani was hired to perfect still wine at Berlucchi in 1955. Instead he found a vineyard and extensive underground cellar fit to make fine sparkling wine. His son Arturo, the CEO and managing and production designer, has expanded and grown the business, yet fondly recalls the family roots. “It was a challenge,” Arturo

What to buy UNCORKED James Nokes

Ziliani said. “We didn’t know the winery would grow like this. It was done almost as a joke between friends. It started with a few bottles.” With the Italian Alps as a northern border and plains to the south, there are dramatic shifts between the day and nighttime temperatures. The vineyards are calcareous and have sandy soil with a limestone bedrock. The minerality is represented in the wines and provides a layer of elegance. “Our method is the same as the one used in Champaign,” Arturo Ziliani said. “But the water, the soil and the sun are different here. They add a characteristic that is different than wines from Champaign. We make a wine that you can drink with a meal. It’s not only made for a celebration.”

• Guido Berlucchi, Franciacorta DOCG, Brut ($29.99): Pear flavors yield to a yeasty finish on a crisp sparkling wine laced with minerality. “The most important thing is mature soil,” Arturo Ziliani said. “We get wind off the mountains, but the roots are very deep.” • Guido Berlucchi, Franciacorta DOCG, Rosé ($34.99): The fruit is cold soaked at low temperatures for 12 to 15 hours and then is soft pressed. The result is a sparkling wine with rich aromas of strawberry, raspberry and a gentle pink color. The complexity in the wine comes from the pinot noir, which is blended with two different chardonnays to provide acidity.

Where to go Galena has it all. I’ve long cherished my trips to the beautiful, old-fashioned town in northwest Illinois. The rolling hills and awe-inspiring topography are home to the best

winemakers in the state. It’s also an ideal setting for a bevy of talented chefs committed to crafting the finest meals. The second annual Galena Food and Wine Festival recently delivered a brilliant marriage of food and wine at the Galena Convention Center. Of the 200 different wines available, Tait, Barossa Valley, The Ball Buster 2012 ($19.99) was a bold, masculine wine with ripe flavors. It stood out amongst the other wines in the Tait portfolio. Chestnut Mountain Resort’s Sunset Grille had my favorite dish, a grilled pork ribeye with warm Napa cabbage slaw, Door County cherry glaze and crispy sweet potato garnish. Not to be outdone, Fried Green Tomatoes also shined with a beef tenderloin, topped with shrimp and alfalfa sprouts on a crostini. Main Street Cheesecakes had a blue cheese and cheddar cheesecake, which was a welcome change from the traditional dessert. At a Saturday night dinner with Fried Green Tomatoes owner Fred Bonnett, his eclectic menu shined. Fried Green To-

matoes claimed the prestigious Wine Spectator Award Winning Wine List for a 15th straight year There were about 300 people in attendance on the Friday night. As the event grows and word continues to spread, I anticipate an even more impressive third edition next year. For more information on a trip to Galena, visit www. visitgalena.org.

Wine 101 Blue netting sat atop the lush, green grass at Galena Cellars vineyard. Harvest is near when the protective bird netting is removed. Galena Cellars has already started to bring in fruit, and harvest in the northwest Illinois hills is underway. Look for harvest updates in future columns.

The Midwest League Championship trophy sits in the Kane County Cougars clubhouse Sept. 15 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva as players clear out their lockers for the season.

Cougars sweep, win Midwest League title By STEPHANIE METZGER editorial@kcchronicle.com EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Kane County Cougars held the best record in baseball this season. Their reward was the 2014 Midwest League title. The Cougars defeated the Lake County Captains 7-2 Sept. 13 to complete a threegame sweep of the Midwest League Championship Series. Pitching, defense and offense all seemed to click for the Cougars, who outscored their opponent 17-5 in the series. “We looked forward to that dog pile,” Cougars first baseman Jacob Rogers said of the Cougars’ title celebration. “Not many of us had that in college ball, so dogpiling like that and celebrating with our boys is great. We’re like a family out there.” The Captains took the ear-

ly lead as Indians first-round draft pick Clint Frazier doubled home Ivan Castillo, but the Cougars crafted a strong rebuttal. Rogers drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on a double by shortstop Carlos Penalver, but the big blow occurred in the third inning. Jeimer Candelario sent a oneout single to left before Rogers unleashed his 17th home run of the season for the 3-1 lead. Rogers, who went 3-for-4 and scored twice, said he sat on a fastball offering from Captains starter Anderson Polanco. “I figured he was trying to get ahead, so I just wanted to look for a fastball. He got it over the plate, and I put a good swing on it,” Rogers said. Rogers, the Cubs’ 40th round pick in 2012, hit .268 with a team-leading 16 home runs during the regular season. He also credited his team’s arms,

including Daury Torrez, who received the win and posted a 2.74 ERA through 23 games this season. “In the first inning, he’s not usually like that,” Rogers said. “We came back and scored one in the second and just went from there.” The Kane County staff led the Midwest League with a 2.85 team ERA. Torrez logged the most innings on the Cougars squad with 131.1. Offensively, the team collected a .261 batting average this year, second best in the league. The Captains came close in the fourth inning after a pair of errors by Penalver at short, but Lake County couldn’t capitalize as Dorssys Paulino grounded into a double play to end the threat. Kane County chased Polanco from the game in the fifth inning after a pair of one-out

singles. Rogers greeted reliever Robbie Aviles with a hit to center that scored one, and Cael Brockmeyer followed with a single to boost the Cougars to the 4-1 lead. Three unearned runs represented the final nail in the Captains’ coffin in the top of the sixth inning as third baseman Paul Hendrix committed two errors during the course of three plays. Mistakes were the Captains’ Achilles the entire series as the team committed nine errors through three games, including four in Game 2. The rest was left in the hands of the Kane County bullpen. Michael Heesch replaced Torrez in the sixth inning and logged three scoreless innings, yielding one run on two hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Francisco Carrillo made quick work of the ninth as he retired the side in order and

tallied two strikeouts to secure the Cougars’ title. The victory marked Kane County’s first Midwest League title since 2001, a series shortened by the Sept. 11 tragedy. The Cougars end their season with a 98-49 overall record, going 91-49 during the regular season. Rogers said they hadn’t planned to be the most winning team in all of baseball, but consistent dedication every day paid off. “It’s not something we really set out to do,” Rogers said. “We set out to just play well every single day and grind. We’ve got a bunch of guys who just want to go out here and do well.” Left fielder Shawon Dunston echoed Rogers’ sentiments about having a well-rounded team that seemed to play well in all categories. “That’s all we’ve been doing all year,” Dunston said.

ANGELS FROM THE ATTIC

What’s the biggest animal you’ve ever seen? Maybe you’ve seen a girafe or an elephant at the zoo, or you’ve spotted whales when visiting the ocean. But can you imagine an animal more than 40 feet tall (bigger than your house!) and weighing more than 40 tons (about the weight of 20 cars), walking around your neighborhood? That was the size of the brachiosaurus, a dinosaur that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. We know about dinosaurs because of a science called paleontology, the study of life long ago. Most scientists conduct experiments to learn new information, but paleontologists have to learn using fossils, which are the preserved remains of living things. Much like animals today, dinosaurs came in many shapes and sizes, and they lived at diferent times. Some,

like the eoraptor, the earliest known dinosaur, walked on two feet and lived among turtles and frogs. Others, like the stegosaurus, a giant animal with a tiny brain, lived in a later time, known as the Jurassic Period, when the first bird-like dinosaurs were seen. There was even one about the size of a chicken, the compsognathus, the smallest known dinosaur. The famous Tyrannosaurus rex didn’t come about until the latest period of dinosaurs, when more mammals began to emerge. A few dinos, like the T. rex, were hunters, but most ate plants — paleontologists know because of the shape of their teeth. Today, you can visit dinosaur bones in a museum, but you won’t see a live dino walking down your street anytime soon. Dinosaurs became extinct (meaning they died out) about 65 million years ago. Why did it happen? No one knows for sure, but with new discoveries being made all the time, we just might learn someday.

Make your own fossil! Dinosaur fossils were formed by bones staying under ground for millions of years. But you can make your own fossil right at home today! Make sure to get an adult to help you. You’ll need: 2 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 cup water Something to make a fossil of — a small plastic dinosaur, or even your hand

1. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl, and slowly add water, stirring as you go, until you have a dough. You might not need all the water — you don’t want the dough too wet. 2. Roll the dough into a ball, dust it with flour, and knead it for at least five minutes. Roll it out to ½- or ¼-inch thick. Cut circles from the dough using a cookie cutter or a drinking glass. 3. Press your fossil object into the dough and carefully remove. Then bake the dough at 200 F for 2-3 hours. When done baking and cooled, you have your fossil!
