Friends, family remember Pat Welch as a man dedicated to community, state Politicians remember influence Welch had on their careers BY STEVE STOUT For Shaw Media Friends of the late state Sen. Patrick Welch shared memories of his public and personal life Jan. 19 during a remembrance memorial gathering at Starved Rock Lodge. Welch, who represented most of LaSalle and Bureau counties in the 38th District from 1983 to 2004, died Jan. 7 at the age of 71 from complications of a stroke. The longtime Peru Democrat, who went on during the last years of his long political career to serve as the assistant majority leader, was remembered during the event as a brilliant legislator and a kind man. Welch’s good friend, Steve Massey, helped organize the event that brought dozens to the lodge for the Sunday afternoon event. “The days we had with Pat have passed, but we are here today to remember how he touched our lives and served his community,” Massey said. “We are here to remind people of all the hard work Pat did for the community and state during his years of service in the state Senate. I was proud to have been his friend for more than four decades.” Chicago-born Welch received his law degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology/Kent College of Law and, for a time, had a private practice in Peru. Turning to politics, Welch first unseated Repub-

Following a Senate election defeat by Putnam County businessman Gary Dahl in 2004, Welch became the Illinois Department of Revenue assistant director in 2005, a post he held until his retirement in 2009. Jan Czarnik was Welch’s longtime companion who spoke of him “as a shy person.” “Pat always said he succeeded in politics because he really wanted it,” Czarnik said. “That is true.” Upon learning of Welch’s passing, Senate President John Cullerton recently said: “It’s with a heavy heart that I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of my former colleague Pat Welch.

He was a man with the savvy and the determination to be a true, principled public servant to the people he represented. “Pat was a fighter for his ideals,” Cullerton added. “He left behind a legislative legacy of equal pay for equal work, environmental protection and investment in local infrastructure. The Pat Welch I had the honor of serving with is the sort of person we speak of when we talk about statesmanship. He will be dearly missed.” LaSalle County Board member and former State Rep. Tom Walsh remembered Welch as a dedicated environmentalist. “I worked closely with Pat on environmental issues here in our community and throughout the state,” recalled Walsh. “He had a great understanding of the district and what was needed to be done for the protection of the environment. We were always on the same page on legislation matters.” John Welch, of Boston, also spoke affectionately about his brother. “When we were kids on the south side of Chicago, we were hell on wheels,” John said. “He was always a lot of fun. Back in those days, I would have never believed that he would enter politics. He was an ordinary guy who liked people and wanted to help them. My brother had a strong sense of commitment.” Former U.S. representative and one-time state Sen. Debbie Halverson recalled the encouragement advice Pat gave her during her various political campaigns. “Pat cared. You could always count on him. He got the job done,” she said.

Elias, 51, whose license was previously suspended, turned himself in to the Streator Police Department Jan. 24 on an arrest warrant, according to a press release. The charges arise from Elias allegedly misusing pre-need funeral funds paid by families before their loved ones passed. from 31 victims between 2003 and 2019. “Funeral directors who violate the public’s trust must be held accountable,” said Illinois State Comptroller Susana A. Mendoza. “I appreciate the priority LaSalle County authorities placed on this investigation, and I look forward to Elias’ victims receiving prompt justice.” Seven counts are for violating the Illinois Funeral Funds Act; four for theft with deceptive intent less than $10,000 and three for theft with deceptive intent on a senior citizen amounting to more than $5,000, according to court documents. Elias posted $7,500 bail and was released from custody and will have to appear in court at a later date. A June Illinois comptroller’s order said Elias submitted false annual reports to cover up the theft.

His pre-need license was revoked in February and his funeral director’s license was revoked in October. In an additional matter, a judgment was awarded Sept. 10 to Streator Memorial Park, which operates Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery, for $10,450. The plaintiff said the Elias Funeral Home owed money for traditional and cremation grave openings dating back to April 2012. They said the funeral home made sporadic payments, but still had an outstanding balance. Court documents said Elias Funeral Home was no longer in operation, listing B.J. and Jason Elias in the suit. Elias was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10 on the matter, but he did not attend. The judge awarded the amount to Streator Memorial Park by default. — By Michael Urbanec, Shaw Media Illinois

HENNEPIN — Mercury Marine has presented Hennepin Marine of Hennepin its prestigious Service Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award for 2019. Hennepin Marine is Illinois’ only Mercury Marine dealer and one of 11 dealers nationally to win this award all 14 years that is has been presented. Mercury Marine’s Service CSI Program measures the satisfaction of consumers after having service work done on their Mercury outboard or MerCruiser Sterndrive. Hennepin Marine won the Service CSI Award for its ongoing commitment to providing exemplary customer service based on the responses of customers who had warranty work performed at the dealership during the past year. The CSI score for each dealer is measured and monitored by Mercury Marine. After warranty work has been completed, Mercury sends out a Service CSI survey to the consumer, asking him or her to rate the service received. To be eligible for the Service CSI Award, a dealer must maintain a score of 94 or better out of 100 in the Service CSI survey. These surveys ask

consumers to rate their overall service satisfaction with the dealership and also indicate if they would re-visit the dealership again in the future. Tracking Service CSI scores is a way Mercury evaluates the effectiveness of its individual dealers and of its own policies and training programs. Dealerships that score high in surveys are recognized through the awards program.
