Electronics instructor, driver training chief prepare to retire Counselor also departing college OGLESBY — The retirements of longtime electronics instructor Jim Gibson of Hennepin and truck driver training program coordinator Bruce Hartman of Sandwich were announced at the Feb. 13 meeting of the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees.

For 26 years, Gibson taught electricity, electronics and renewable energy, and created the apprenticeship program with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“Jim has had a monumental impact on our college and students in the trades,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

“He facilitated the electrician’s apprenticeship with the IBEW and was critically important to the success of our Making Industry Meaningful in College (MIMIC) program and our National Science Foundation grants,” Corcoran said.

Gibson, who will retire officially July 31, wrote in his retirement letter, “Thank you for all the wonderful support over the years. The programs are in much better shape than when I was hired all those years ago.”

More than 2,500 drivers have completed IVCC’s truck driver training program since it opened under Hartman’s lead in 2000. Hartman, who will retire May 1, said, “We’ve helped so many people improve their family situation with careers in trucking.”

Corcoran praised Hartman, saying, “Bruce has been the ‘face’ of our program.”

Part-time counselor Karen Stachowiak also announced her retirement after 20 years.

“A wonderful counselor, Karen was always happy to be here,” Corcoran said, adding “Even on her days off, she reminded (supervisor) Mark Grzybowski, ‘I’m only a phone call away if you need me.’”

Board members approved: • Holding the combined tuition and universal fee rate at $133 per hour for the third straight year.

• College and Career Start program tuition reductions. Students enrolled in IVCC courses taught at

The board accepted with regret the resignation of economics instructor David Barnes effective May 16.

Following closed session, the board authorized Corcoran to sign the agreement with IT employee James Niessner. The board also approved the termination of employee Amber Gonzalez.

Board members learned: • The annual Academic Challenge Feb. 7 attracted 11 high schools and 217

students to compete in two 40-minute exams in biolog y, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, mathematics or physics.

Competing high schools were L-P, Streator, Ottawa, Hall, Mendota, Seneca, St. Bede, Midland, LaMoille, Putnam County and Marquette. First and second place teams from the three divisions advance to the Eureka College Sectional March 13 • Of 53 IVCC RN students taking the NCLEX state board exam, 48 passed on the first attempt for a 91 percent pass rate compared to the national and state averages of 88 percent. The five students who did not pass the first attempt, passed on the second.

Of 12 LPN students, 10 passed on the first attempt for an 83 percent pass rate compared to national and state averages of 86 and 89 percent. The two who did not pass were successful the second time.

• A recent agreement allows IVCC ag students to transfer seamlessly to the ag program at Illinois State University. The articulation allows students with AAS degrees in agronomy and agribusiness to pursue ISU bachelor’s degrees in agriculture.

• Total budget for 42 student organizations was $102,914 in 2019-20, down from $112,604 in 2018-19 and $129,689 in 2017-18.

Four-wheel-drive vehicle has other advanced features

TONICA — Monday, Feb. 24, will be a big day for the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department.

That’s the day the department’s new ambulance will be placed into service.

Sue Huss, ambulance director, said the new unit is a 2018 Horton on a Ford 550 chassis, purchased for $267,000 from Foster Coach Sales in Sterling.

It replaces a 1999 Ford Medtec model, which the department plans to sell outright for the best offer received.

“It is an expensive purchase, but we take good care of our trucks with the intention of keeping them for a very long time,” Huss said.

This is the third ambulance purchased from Foster Coach Sales, Huss said. The 1999 unit was bought there, along with a previous 1985 model.

Donations and fundraising helped to pay for the new ambulance, Huss said. She noted that the department is a non-taxed fire and ambulance service.

The new ambulance has a number of advanced features, not the least of which is the fact it is a fourwheel-drive vehicle “for the challenging winter road conditions in Illinois,” Huss said.

Among other features, the new ambulance is fitted with the Stryker Power load system that enables the patient to be loaded into the back of the ambulance by power and does not require any lifting from the EMTs. It also has electronic privacy windows; harness seat belts that give all the range of motion needed for patient care; a 360-degree camera for the driver to safely operate the vehicle but also monitor the outside of the ambulance for anyone approaching the vehicle; and air ride for the ambulance box and the truck cab.

“At the same time, we also had a Life Pak 15 Cardiac monitor and defibrillator made available to us,” Huss said.

“This an expensive piece of equipment that was needed to be upgraded in 2020 from our old Zoll E Series Cardiac Monitoring,” she said.

“With this upgraded equipment, we can also pace, cardiovert, and use wave-for m capnography in treating our patients,” Huss said.

“With these new options available

to Tonica, we are now upgrading from Intermediate Life Support care to Advanced Life Support care while a paramedic or pre-hospital RN is available on the call,” she said.

Monday will be the day the equipment and supplies from the 1999

ambulance will be switched to the new unit, after which it will be inspected by the state of Illinois before being placed into service.

Among the items to be transferred are a cardiac monitor and supplies, airway equipment and supplies, suction equipment and supplies, oxygen, medical bags, pediatric equipment and supplies, numerous supplies for bandaging, burns and obstetrics, splints, traction devices, backboards, c-collars, Stryker Stairchair, medications for BLS and ALS, and the child car seat.

The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department provides services in the areas of firefighting, rescue, medical and trauma. The fire department covers Tonica, Lowell and the surrounding rural areas.

The ambulance covers the towns of Tonica, Cedar Point, Leonore, Lowell and the rural areas between them.

There are 11 trained personnel for the ambulance — nine EMTs at the basic level, one paramedic and 1 PHRN.

Military mom’s ‘Boot Memorial’ coming to St. Bede Academy alum asks for military boot donations locally, across U.S.

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media A St. Bede graduate and military wife needs help to show compassion not only for families of fallen soldiers and but also for veterans who lost buddies while in the military.

One of the nation’s largest memorials to fallen soldiers at war or in peacetime is coming to St. Bede Academy on June 13.

But Theresa (Irizarry) Johnson, who curates the exhibit, needs some unusual donations from veterans here and throughout the United States. She wants to collect more than 8,000 combat boots and other military-issue boots for a ceremony and run in late spring west of Peru.

Johnson started the Boot Memorial while her husband was stationed on military bases. She decided to collect military boots, and place into each a photograph, autobiographical information and flag for military personnel who died in service to the country since the early 1990s and Middle East conflicts.

She launched the memorial on her own while working in 2012 for Fisher House, a haven for the injured and soldiers with post-traumatic stress and for their families.

“I wanted to also raise awareness for Fisher House and what they did.

They help military families who are going through a medical crisis,” she said, referring to how she launched the boot memorial and a Fisher

The Fisher House Foundation has 85 multi-family temporary homes, two in Alaska, two in Hawaii and two in Germany. The foundation has one in Dover, Del., set up and restricted solely as a private transitional location for the families of the fallen.

Johnson witnessed the suffering of the thousands of soldiers who lost friends in the military or saw their buddies killed and never had a chance to deal with it or say goodbye.

“They didn’t get a chance to process the loss because you need to stay mission-focused — if you don’t, you might be next,” she said.

Since there were various Fisher House locations in the United States, Johnson moved her event, the Hero and Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll, and boot memorial as her husband, Leon, was moved to different bases.

But she began formulating the

event several years before that. In 2005 and 2006, when she and her husband were there, her husband and an entire division from Fort Campbell, Ky., deployed to Iraq, and 105 of the soldiers were killed. Additional deaths hit close to home, such as her son’s best friend dying in 2007, and her son’s unit losing two pilots.

Her husband, Leon, also spent his career with wounded soldiers and their comrades as a combat medic.

He recently retired, as a command sergeant major, after 28 years of service, and he runs a middle school Junior ROTC program.

She and her husband got to know a lot of soldiers who carried on with their lives and their service without grieving. She spent time with a lot soldiers having mental difficulties.

“There was a lot of survivor guilt,” Johnson said.

She met some who had been the only survivors of an improvised

explosive device blast, and they questioned why their “battle buddies” were the ones killed, not them.

Other soldiers would finish one mission and immediately transition to the next mission without having time to deal with the emotions they had on the battlefield or when there had been an accident on a base.

Setting out the boots with the fallen soldiers’ photos, information and flag was beneficial to soldiers who came to the events at the military bases.

“It gave them an opportunity to have another moment with their battle buddy,” she said.

Johnson and St. Bede are preparing for the first Boot Memorial Hero and Remembrance Run at a civilian site.

“This is my first non-military location, so we’re starting from scratch,” she said.

“We’re creating a display to stay in the Illinois Valley area,” Johnson said.

But she needs more military boots — and she doesn’t think people need to go out and buy new ones. She said from experience a lot of veterans still have at least one pair of boots.

Two-vehicle accident LaSalle County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at 3:07 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Interstate 39 exit ramp northbound and Route 251 (Eden Township).

Marlon Pettis, 26, of Normal had exited I-39 and stopped at the stop sign at Route 52. Pettis proceeded into the intersection and was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Damaris Gonzulez, 20, of Tonica. Both drivers were treated by Oglesby EMS. Gonzulez was transported to St. Margaret’s in Spring Valley. Pettis was cited for failed to yield when turning left.

Single-vehicle accident LaSalle County deputies investigated a single-vehicle accident at 8:45 p.m. Jan. 28 at East 150th Road and North 2451st Road (Eden Township). Shawn Bekeleski, 60, of Spring Valley was southbound on East 150th Road and failed to stop at the T-intersection at North 2451st Road. His vehicle entered into the south side ditch and struck a road sign.

No injuries were reported. No citations were issued.
