Full speed ahead: Teachers are pioneers of remote learning

“That interaction with them, I’m really missing that,” she said, mentioning one of the big challenges she will soon face is transitioning to a completely remote setting for teaching.

LaSalle-Peru Township High School started remote learning on April 2, where Adams works as a social science teacher.

Illinois’ State Superintendent of Education declared remote learning day will begin for schools statewide and continue until in-person instruction can resume.

Adams said she’s also concerned about students’ engagement, as there are students who respond more to in-person interaction and feel more committed and invested when they are face to face with a teacher.

The district had not been grading students’ new work during the non-structural Act-of-God days.

But beginning April 2, the district began grading students’ work.

Since March 17, the district has been providing students with learning opportunities through Google classroom and Chromebooks to review materials they’ve been working on.

Adams said she’s had several students reach out and ask how she’s doing and hope that she’s doing well.

She’s also had a couple of students tell her they really miss school — “which made me feel good, but also makes me very aware there are students who depend on the school environment as part of their life.”

District Superintendent Steve Wrobleski said for most of the teachers, April 2 was comparable to a first day of teaching — “We’ve never had to do this before.”

Every class will be part of the remote learning, even hands-on classes like welding.

“I’m incredibly proud of our staff,” Wrobleski said. “Our staff has risen to the challenge.”

ers set up Zoom meetings with their students to stay engaged. Teachers have been conducting remote learning lessons/activities with students since March 17. Students took home their Chromebooks to use for remote learning.

• Oglesby Elementary is using “multi-means” for student-teacher interaction. “Different outreach includes email, Dojo, Google Classroom and Zoom, to name a few that we are using heavily while individuals add others,” said Superintendent Michael Pillion.

• Peru Elementary sent students home with homework and assignments and immediately instituted e-learning and teacher outreach on March 19. Superintendent Mark Cross said the staff members were prepared to continue online teaching through April 30, May 1 or the end of the school year, if needed.

• St. Bede Academy implemented an e-learning program a year ago for emergency days (i.e., snow days) to ensure they wouldn’t have to tack on days at the end of the school year.

Faculty were trained on “multiple” platforms and practiced with students in-house before the campus was closed. Said Michelle Mershon, St. Bede principal, “I truly believe that character is judged during difficult times and that the character of St. Bede Academy will be strengthened by what our community is contributing.”

Even St. Bede P.E. classes have gone virtual, with students using their phone cameras or webcams to upload videos of them doing their daily exercise to coach Samuel Allen. “I think all of us are having a lot of fun with this on the P.E. side of things,” Allen said. “I even have some students giving better effort in their calisthenics on video than they do in the gymnasium!”

• At Princeton Elementary, staff members were called in to hand out packets to students and their families to begin remote lessons as April arrived. For families not able to pick up a packet, bus drivers delivered them to homes.

Superintendent Tim Smith said the remote learning plan is designed to maintain families’ health and safety while supporting continued learning for students. “We’ve told the teachers, let’s go simple in the beginning.”

Most of the lessons can be completed in the packet. Smith said some of the junior high lessons require online work, but can also be completed on paper. Smith said students won’t be forced to complete the entire packet within two weeks.

The guidance on remote learning says a student’s grade cannot be diminished by the closure.

Not all heroes wear capes.

These heroes are making masks to protect those in need, one three-dimensional object at a time.

Illinois Valley Community College has started a project to help the world during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a start,” said Dorene Data, program coordinator for computer-aided design at IVCC. “Who knows how long this will go on?” she said about the coronavirus pandemic.

Data and Shane Lange, dean of workforce development, are using 3-D printers at IVCC to create masks and donate them to those in need.

“We’re looking to find people who could use them,” Data said, such as nursing homes and Illinois Veterans

There are challenges. They have three printers available to use at IVCC, but the materials take hours to print. Scheduling is difficult, too, as someone has to be there to switch out the materials.

They’re optimistic about the work they’re doing.

“At least we might help somebody,” Data said.

The duo has been in contact with JBH Technologies, which manufactures the 3D printers they’re using; JBH told the team they’re developing new things every day and gave them some more designs for masks.

“We’re working with the manufacturers to make sure we comply with all the regulations,” Data said.

BY TOM COLLINS Shaw Media It was never supposed to be a huge wedding — 130 in attendance, mostly family — but the guest list was shrunk when the novel coronavirus hit weeks before their big day. Matt Baker and Paula Tuttle at first saw two choices: Elope or find a new date.

They instead came up with a plan C. With social distancing rules in force, the Bakers forged ahead with their Saturday wedding after devising an innovative way for the guests to be there, so to speak. The wedding was live-streamed with only the officiant, friend Stephanie Benson of Ottawa, and a photographer on hand and wearing masks and gloves.

Social Security leader warns of scams; hours changed Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefit payments will continue to be paid on time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the administration emphasized in a notice carrying various instructions for recipients.

The agency reminds everyone to be aware of scammers who try to take advantage of the pandemic to trick people into providing personal information or payment via retail gift cards, wire transfers, internet currency, or by mailing cash, to maintain Social Security benefit payments or receive economic impact payments from the Department of the Treasury.

“Social Security will pay monthly benefits on time, and these payments will not be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Commissioner Andrew Saul said.

“I want our beneficiaries to be aware that scammers may try to trick

you into thinking the pandemic is stopping or somehow changing your Social Security payments, but that is not true. Don’t be fooled.”

The Department of the Treasury will soon provide information about economic impact payments under the recently enacted law, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making direct payments to eligible people. Recipients are asked to not call Social Security about these payments as the agency does not have information to share.

To allow available agents to provide better phone coverage, the agency temporarily changed the national 800 number hours starting this week to 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time. The agency is experiencing longer than normal wait times on the 800 number and asks the public to remain patient, use its online services at www. socialsecurity.gov or call a local office.

The online invitation drew a robust response. By Friday morning, nearly 200 guests had RSVP’d and committed to viewing the exchange of vows, even as some expressed mild disappointment for the newlyweds and their intended live guests.

“I’m so sorry you have had to do this but am excited to witness your marriage on Facebook,” said friend Nicole Wujek. “Thanks for the invite! I can’t wait!”

“Great to see you making the best of your special day in unfortunate times,” said Jackie Actis. “Look forward to celebrating with you!”

Congratulations even poured in from a Facebook user who was tagged my mistake.

“I think you sent this to the wrong person, but all the best!” replied Pamela Anderson, who doesn’t know the bride or groom. “I hope you are married forever and have lots of kids and pets in your future!”

Speaking of which, starting a family was obliquely addressed in the invitation.

“While (live-streaming was) not what we had planned, we do hope that we may have a larger gathering/reception with everyone in the future,” they told their guests, and then offered an eyebrow-raising addendum, “Perhaps, even after we add another party member!”

But both work for LaSalle-Peru Township High School — she’s the band director, he’s director of communications — and both have been using social media to reach out to students and faculty studying and working offsite during the pandemic.

“We live-stream all the time anymore,” she said, “so it almost felt like a natural response to this.”

The decision was easily settled, insofar as they’d already procured a marriage license they didn’t want to renew and their families were fully supportive of whatever they decided.

“As we were sitting in the living room talking about this,” Matt recalled, “I got a text from my mom saying, ‘If you guys decide to cancel this, do what you think best.’”

The vendors were no less flexible and accommodating, which isn’t to say the Bakers cut all corners. Flowers still were delivered and there was a wedding cake — albeit with a few tiers less than would be needed to feed 130. There still were plenty of leftover slices.

“We’re going to eat cake for our honeymoon,” quipped Paula.

The Bakers had issued a Facebook invitation in which they encouraged guests to eat, drink and be merry while viewing the nuptials at home. They also plan to assemble a wedding album, so guests also were asked to provide selfies taken during the big day.

And for those who would otherwise miss dancing at the reception, Matt and Paula assembled a playlist of romantic songs by Al Green, Michael Buble, Otis Redding, Etta James and Louis Armstrong,

Matthew Klein nominated for student trustee award OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College student trustee Matthew Klein of Utica has been nominated for the 2020 Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Excellence Award.

“Matt is an effective student trustee who listens to students’ concerns and gracefully communicates them to board members and administrators,” said IVCC board chairwoman Jane Goetz.

The award, sponsored by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA), honors stu-

dent trustees for effective communication with the students they represent, active engagement in board meetings and for acting in the best interests of students and the college.

The winner will receive $500 and be honored at the annual ICCTA Awards Ceremony in Chicago this summer.

In 2019 and 2020, Klein assisted the IVCC Foundation with testimonial videos that helped raise more than $40,000 in Giving Day contributions. In addition, he created a

thank-you video for a major donor that inspired the benefactor to make another $50,000 gift.

The founder and CEO of Matthew Klein Films has produced dozens of IVCC recruiting videos and transformed the college’s social media. (Visit matthewkleinfilms. com/ivcc­projects for a sampling of his work.)

Klein also volunteers for IVCC recruiting sessions — including

speaking before large crowds — and often memorializes events by releasing a video.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said Klein’s impact will be felt long after he transfers to Bradley University next fall.

“Matt is a superb student trustee and has made IVCC a better institution. In my 13 years as president, few students have had greater influence.”

Scholarship established to memorialize Streator soldier OGLESBY — A scholarship has been established to memorialize a soldier from Streator who fought bravely in the Middle East only to succumb to war-related injury and illness six years after returning home.

The Tyler Derossett Memorial Veterans Award has been created by his former wife, Lani Derossett, son Jhase and parents Tina Derossett of Streator and Larry Derossett of Brentwood, Tenn.

Tyler enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately following his 2007 graduation from Streator High School. In six years of service, he did combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Tyler came home in 2013 with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and struggled with civilian life,” Lani said.

He became a father in 2014 when

Jhase was born and enjoyed time outdoors fishing and camping. However, after five more years struggling to adapt to life back home, he took his own life July 24, 2019.

In Tyler’s obituary, his mother Tina said, “22 veterans commit suicide every day. Today it felt like 23.”

Lani Derossett is hopeful the award shows other veterans there is significant support available to them at IVCC. “Our family created this scholarship to help other veterans feel the support of a ‘community’ by attending IVCC,” said Lani, herself a recent IVCC graduate and Foundation scholarship recipient.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall to a veteran of the armed forces.

“I really truly hope this can make a difference to someone who needs it,” Lani said.
