Board members vote to keep their pay, other elected officials’ pay the same

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media The LaSalle County Board voted May 7 against a pay increase for the chairman, auditor, circuit clerk, coroner and recorder, as well as against increasing the per diem amount for county board members.

County board members will continue to get $60 per diem plus mileage reimbursement. A proposal to increase the pay $70 per diem after the

November election beginning December 2020 and $80 per diem beginning December 2021 was not accepted. The county board’s pay has stayed the same since 1996, said Board Member Jerry Myers, R-Streator.

A 1.5% pay increase was proposed for the chairman, auditor, circuit clerk, coroner and recorder for 2021 to increase salaries to $69,015; with a 1.5% increase proposed for 2022 to $70,050; a 2% increase for 2023 to $71,451 and a 2% increase for 2024 to

$72,880. The increases would have put those elected positions in-line with other elected officials had it been accepted.

County Board Member Joe Savitch, D-LaSalle, said the salary proposals are bad timing, noting the hit financially county governments are expected to take.

Elected officials are required to set the salaries for elected positions at least six months before the new terms begin.

Businesses defying Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order could face a misdemeanor under emergency rules his administration has filed.

Following the news, LaSalle County State’s Attorney Karen Donnelly said Sunday she will not prosecute those charges.

Pritzker’s order requires businesses to remain closed with few exceptions because of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, a violation is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,500, according to WTTW-TV. The change took effect Friday when the rules were filed. Legislators on a bipartisan oversight committee have the chance to review it Wednesday. If they don’t reject it, the rules remain in effect for 150 days.

Donnelly said Grundy County’s State’s Attorney Jason Helland also issued a similar statement, that he has no intention of prosecuting the Class A misdemeanors.

Donnelly said the issue has become a political one.

“He’s dividing the state rather than uniting it,” she said about the governor.

Tonica firefighters put out house fire Sunday afternoon TONICA — A house fire the afternoon of May 17 in rural Tonica started near the power connection to the house, firefighters determined.

The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire at 2005 East Eighth Road at 12:30 p.m.

Sunday.

On arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the residence.

Firefighters determined the fire started near the power connection.

The fire was within a wall and extended to the attic area. The roof and walls were ventilated. There was some fire, smoke and water damage inside the house.

There were no injuries.

ComEd was contacted to disconnect the power to the house.

Tonica firefighters cleared the scene within about an hour and 30 minutes.

Tonica responded with two pump-

ers, a tender, rescue truck and ambulance. Oglesby firefighters responded with a pumper. Lostant Fire Department provided a pump-

er to cover the Tonica Fire Station during the incident.

LaSalle County Sheriff’s deputies provided traffic control.

Licensed in seven states, McCleary was a recognized authority on abutment design, piling and pavement rehabilitation, among other subspecialties.

Busy though as he was in his career, he was a long-serving member of the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department.

“Terry McCleary served admirably on our department for over 18 years from August of 2000 until retiring in June of 2019 and was given honorary

member status,” Tonica firefighters said in a social media posting.

“Terry held seats on various committees throughout the years and as a board of director for a number of years. Within that time frame, he left his mark on our department as well as our community for years to come.

“Rest easy, Terry, we have it from here.”

Arrangements are through Hurst Funeral Home, Tonica.

TONICA — He was a respected engineer, gave clinics on fly-fishing, was active in his parish and still carved out time to put out fires in Tonica and drive an ambulance.

Tonica firefighters and EMTs gathered to salute Terrence “Terry” McCleary as he was transported into a hearse from his Tonica home, where he succumbed May 14 to cancer. He was 53.

“He was just a great guy,” said Rick Turri, Tonica’s deputy chief of training and public information officer. “He’d do a lot of things for everybody.”

McCleary wore many hats and will be remembered in construction circles for his work with McCleary Engineering. McCleary served as chief engineer with 28 years experience in construction and geotechnical engineering experience.

Class of 2020 celebrates with virtual commencement YouTube the site of unusual pretaped graduation ceremony

PEDELTY Shaw Media The introductory voiceover of Saturday’s early-afternoon online celebration for Illinois Valley Community College’s 2020 graduates chose to highlight a silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the junior college’s 54th commencement to be its first ever virtual one: “All of you have the best seat in the house, right in front of the stage.”

More than 200 people logged onto YouTube to celebrate live with the IVCC Class of 2020 during a onehour, nine-minute pretaped video commencement ceremony, with 737 graduates honored in the video produced by recent IVCC graduate Matthew Klein, who also delivered the day’s invocation.

“To simply say that this has been an unusual spring semester would be an understatement,” IVCC president Jerry Corcoran said from the decorated IVCC auditorium stage during his opening address after the playing of Pomp and Circumstance.

“The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in 4 million confirmed cases and almost 300,000 deaths worldwide. It also led to our governor issuing an executive directive to shelter in place and close all Illinois community college campuses to the public, leaving us no choice but to move the delivery of instruction to online platforms. Add a cyber attack (on IVCC) to the list of challenges we’ve faced this semes-

“These are definitely unusual times,” Olivero said. “If you had told me several months ago when I agreed to give this speech that I would be making it in an empty theater, I would’ve told you you were crazy. But here we are.

Is Springfield going to reopen Starved Rock State Park and Lodge by June 1? Not necessarily, cautioned a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

A Peoria TV station reported May 13 that park and lodge officials were hoping to open by the first of the month; but when contacted for clarification, deputy director Rachel Torbert said the agency does not, at this time, “have a set date for when Starved Rock, or additional parks within the state, will be opened.”

“However, we continue to work with the Governor’s Office and the Illinois Department of Public Health to determine which state sites can safely reopen for public use,” Torbert said. “As Illinois continues to flatten, and eventually bend, the curve, we are looking for-

ward to welcoming Illinoisans back to more of the state’s parks.”

The park and lodge are closed through May 30 and reopening is contingent on the state reaching milestones in the effort to contain the novel coronavirus.

Amy Trimble, president and CEO of Starved Rock Lodge, has stated that June 1 remains a fingers-crossed goal.

“If we can be open on June 1, I do believe that we will survive,” Trimble stated, citing cash flow difficulties directly related to the pandemic and resulting closure. “While it will be difficult in the first several months without large gatherings, I think transient business will be thrilled to get away from their homes and come out to visit us.”

In short, she hopes to avoid what happened with White Pines Resort in White Pines State Park, which will close their doors after 80 years of service. Shaw Media reported Beth George, concessionaire for 31 years, has decided that she is not able to continue absorbing expenses with no definitive date of reopening.

She believes 16th District could be won by a Democrat

Candidate Brzozowski looks to continue blue wave

Democratic congressional candidate Dani Brzozowski said the political landscape of the 16th Congressional District, which includes all of LaSalle, Livingston, Bureau, Boone, Grundy, Iroquois, Lee and Ogle counties and parts of DeKalb, Ford, Stark, Dani Will and Winnebago Brzozowski counties, is changing.

Considered a red district and held by U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, since 2012, Brzozowski believes she can flip the district come November.

“It’s not as red as it was 10 years ago,” said Brzozowski, who lives in LaSalle. “A lot has happened that makes it much more favorable for a Democrat.”

She points to Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker losing to former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner by less than 1 percentage point in the

district and for the first time, more people grabbed a Democratic ballot in the district than Republican for the primaries as fueling optimism.

Both Kinzinger and Brzozowski ran unopposed in the primary. On the Republican ballot, President Donald Trump did not have a serious challenger in the primary, while the Democratic nomination still was undecided during Illinois’ primary.

She said the district is growing more ethnically diverse and the eastern edge is seeing more suburban sprawl.

Brzozowski, who is the chairwoman of LaSalle County Democrats, said she is different than other challengers before her, because she is much more connected politically.

As a chairwoman, she said she’s made connections within the district, knows the issues and has received high-profile endorsements from Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville.

“I recognized there is a desire to flip the district, and I’m going to be the person to do it,” she said.

Brzozowski said health care is the No. 1 issue in the district, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only drawn

more attention to that point as people lost their health care coverage when they lost their jobs.

Calling health care a human right, she believes in extending Medicare for all and capping prescription drug costs.

“Universal coverage is the goal,” she said. “ ... (T)he federal government has a responsibility to make sure basic human rights are met.”

She said prior to the Affordable Care Act, 60,000 people were uninsured within the 16th District. That number has decreased to 40,000, but she believes more needs to be done to extend publicly-funded health benefits to the entire population.

“Medicare is the right solution, because it the most efficient and effective system,” Brzozowski said.

A former small business owner of Sweet Sadie’s Playspace in LaSalle, Brzozowski said providing health insurance is expensive for small business owners and hinders potential entrepreneurs.

She said the two questions she hears all the time about expanding Medicare for all is whether it will increase taxes and if people will lose their ability to make their own

medical choices. She said her plan will not increase taxes on the lower or middle class and she said instead of having to choose between a doctor in a provider’s network, Medicare for all would allow citizens to choose between any doctor.

She admits presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has not endorsed a Medicarefor-all policy, but she said it is her hope Congress will help him get there.

At the end of March, Brzozowski had $17,034 cash on-hand for her campaign against Kinzinger, who has more than $1.6 million cash on-hand.

“He hasn’t had to spend much money to campaign, and it’s allowed him to stockpile,” Brzozowski said.

“He’s been allowed to grow that money based on special interests.

We want to be able to make him spend that money.”

Brzozowski said her campaign has been funded mostly through donations from within the district, and she said it’s too early to say if Democrats will contribute money.

She said her party has provided her with insights into the political landscape, which has been priceless.

Another door opened when star athlete broke her leg

TONICA — When Karla Goskusky of Tonica learned of Illinois Valley Community College’s annual Paul Simon Essay Contest — a chance for students to write about how the college changed their lives — she saw it as an opportunity almost 40 years in the making.

A renowned IVCC student-athlete and coach in the 1980s and 1990s, Goskusky will graduate from the college’s therapeutic massage program in the summer of 2021.

She was a member of IVCC’s first volleyball and softball teams and still fondly remembers her initial experience on campus at a summer basketball scrimmage.

“I was waiting on the side to get in and show them what I could do,” she recalled in her Simon essay. “In the middle of a fast break, coach Ken Pyszka yelled, ‘Karla, get in there!’ I darted in from half-court, ran full-speed down the lane, caught a pass from Debbie Hall and somehow made a miraculous shot while being fouled. That was my start at IVCC.” The former Karla Walgenbach was a three-sport captain and MVP who earned a scholarship to Loyola University Chicago to play volleyball and basketball before a broken leg suffered in an

IVCC softball game cost her that full-ride.

“I was devastated, but it opened another door, one that helped mold me into the person I am today: a coach, a mentor, someone who loves to help people.”

She met lifelong friends at IVCC including Rhonda Morel, Carol Pratt, Dr. Rhonda Marty-Anderson and Mary Jesse and spent the next decade coaching IVCC volleyball; her 1986 team finished third in the state with a school record 37 wins and she was named N4C Conference Coach of the Year.

She also refereed volleyball 32 years — including being head official for the 2003 Class A state championship at ISU’s Redbird Arena.

Goskusky is a married mother of four sons, fitness trainer and former award-winning bodybuilder. She was a successful salesperson of large farm buildings for 19 years. When that job ended, she turned to IVCC. “IVCC came to the rescue again by hiring me as a fitness center instructor and by giving me a start in a new career in therapeutic massage. I’ve never enjoyed school so much as I have this time around.

“IVCC has been there for me at every stage of my life,” she wrote. “It has quietly been my rock, always there when I needed it. I graduated from IVCC in 1981 and now 40 years later will graduate again at 60.”

“I am not sure where I would be in this world without IVCC.”

CHIEF OF POLICE - GRANVILLE, IL Education/Experience/Requirements: 10 years experience as fully commissioned police officer Background in police administration 2 years of law enforcement experience in a supervisory or command capaVillage preferred Degree preferred State of Illinois Law Enforcement Certification required. Command or advanced supervisory training from Northwestern University School of Staff and Command, Southern Police Institute, Police Executive Institute, FBI or similar executive long course preferred.

Duties: Responsible for planning, coordinating and providing overall direction for the activities of the Police Department, which include enforcing rules and regulations for the department. The Chief assumes ultimate responsibility for law enforcement services and programs within the Village. Maintain overall responsibility for the selection, training and development of personnel within the department; evaluate or oversee the evaluation of subordinates to ensure proper conduct, adequate job performance, identify and correct deficiencies through appropriate discipline or training; coordinate training programs and activities to facilitate career growth of subordinates. Involved in research, development, implementation and review of programs, policies and procedures required to achieve the Village's goals and objectives in a safe, legal, efficient and effective manner. Prepare and administer the department budget.
