Quest for a cooler school continues Air conditioning would require costly electrical upgrades

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — The quest for a cooler school remains ongoing in Lostant, as considerations for air conditioning prove unfeasible.

“I think it’s a lot of money for a couple weeks out of the year,” Superintendent Sandra Malahy said of the options at last week’s school board meeting.

Previously, it had been suggested that portable units would be cheaper to purchase than permanent units, but the costs remain higher than might be affordable. Much of the estimated cost had been in upgrades to the building’s electrical infrastructure, and the portable units would not sidestep that cost.

Requirements adjusted to account for harder courses LOSTANT — The requirements for eighth-grade Lostant students to receive their academic recognition awards have been amended to account for the high school coursework some students are working through.

Previously, the student needed to maintain an A average throughout all coursework, but the more strenuous workload of high school coursework has prompted a change. Now, while Lostant work still needs to be an A, high school work requires only a B. “If they take high school coursework, they only need a B, but all their Lostant work needs to be an A,” Superintendent Sandra Malahy said at last week’s school board meeting.

Malahy noted that the grading for this coursework, if done through a high school, would be weighted to make up for the increased difficulty. However, this is not an option Lostant is likely to take any time soon.

“I don’t want to get into weighting grades,” Malahy said.

The idea is that the students should not be penalized, through loss of their academic recognition award, for taking on more difficult high school work when they would have met the requirements without it.

“Lostant’s been traditionally known for their high academics,” Malahy said. “Kind of fell off that cliff for a bit, but I think we’re back.”

While some rooms provide outlets in locations where that cord would be enough for a window-mounted unit to reach the electrical port, other rooms do not, necessitating that electrical work would have to be completed.

The other potential issue was whether the building’s electrical

system could handle the strain of all the necessary units at once, which was decided to be unlikely.

However, Malahy provided some measure of hope for an air-conditioned future, noting that she has heard rumblings about potential grants in the future that would provide funds for this work. For the current time, however, cost remains an obstacle that is difficult to surmount.

The site of the former Tonica Nurseries is planned to be purchased, with some of the land added to the park and some used for parking.

While the possibility remains that other uses can be found for parts of the land, the focus at the moment is with the park, according to Sluder.

“Right now, we’re just going to do park and parking,” Sluder said.

First state mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile virus in Illinois for 2019.

DuPage County Health Department staff collected the positive mosquitoes on May 21 in Wayne.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported so far this year.

“The recent rains are leaving many pools of water behind, not only in sewer systems under streets and drainage ditches along roads, but in our own backyards,” said Acting IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.

“As we start to see higher temperatures, we will start to see more West Nile virus activity. While we see West Nile virus in Illinois every year, it is important not to become complacent. It’s easy to take precautions to protect yourself by wearing insect repellent and getting rid of standing water around your home.”

Monitoring for West Nile virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests

for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing sick horses and humans with West Nile viruslike symptoms. People who see a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact their local health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a Culex pipiens mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.

Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis, encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

TONICA — Carleen (Bray Golick) Skerston passed away peacefully Thursday, May 23, 2019.

She was known for her luck winning at euchre, at the boat, at charitable events, and most recently she bet on the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby.

Born Sept. 4, 1934, to Leo and Anna (Stremlau) Bray of Utica, she was the youngest of eight children and was the matriarch of 250-plus people at the most recent Bray family reunion. A graduate of LaSalle-Peru Township High School, she was one of the only women to go into chemical engineering at LPO and was often the only female in her classes.

She had a life-long interest in politics, tracking multiple news sites on her phone and on TV in order to get all angles. She was a member of the Peoria Journal Star Board and had been a “Jill for Jack” campaigning for John F. Kennedy and had an honored invitation to his inauguration.

An avid fan of tennis, she played multiple times per week until she was 79 years old. She also loved telling stories with the American Girl Dolls at the LaSalle County Historical Society. She was the go-to person to recall ages and dates, and she would recount the same by doing a magical formula of “so-and-so is three months older than X who was born when the Utica bridge flooded” — but somehow this was the most accurate of records.

She was blessed with a long life, but what comes with that is that she was preceded in death by many, including her husband of 55 years, Skip Skerston; husband Bill Golick; four brothers, Howard, Ed, Bill and

A suspected arsonist was picked up by police in Peru, shortly after firefighters fought a house fire.

Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei announced on Facebook that Salvatore Fiumefreddo, 58, was arrested at 12:05 p.m. May 22 and charged with residential arson, a Class 1 felony, following an investigation involving the Peru Police Department, Peru Fire Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal at a house fire at 1628 Schuyler St. Callers first notified first responders of the fire as well as reports of a suspicious looking man in the area prior to the discovery of the fire.

Fire departments from Peru, LaSalle and Standard responded to the fire with Ladd Fire stepping in to cover the Peru station. Peru Ambulance was also on scene.

An investigation was conducted and police received felony approval from the LaSalle County State’s Attorney for residential arson by 4 p.m.

“I commend the folks in the neighborhood who made their initial observations, called 911 providing critical information and then offered all kinds of support and information to responding emergency personnel,” Bernabei said in a statement. “Their conduct demonstrates what being a good neighbor all is about.”

He also complimented the work of firefighters and police.

“Their professionalism certainly mitigated what was already a very serious and dangerous situation,” Bernabei said.
