Starved Rock, Matthiessen state parks now open

With the west entrance and lower parking lot closed at Starved Rock State Park due to flooding, the first visitors made their way through the Route 71 entrance — and the day went pretty smoothly, officials said.

While some state parks opened earlier in May, Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks opened for the first time May 29 since March.

The parks draw roughly 3 million visitors per year — about 544,000 visitors alone between March 1 and June 1 in a normal year.

The morning was a little quiet, but the parking started to fill up near noon. There were no closures due to the park exceeding its capacity. If the park reaches its capacity for visitors or parking, it will close temporarily until numbers decrease — a possibility this weekend.

“We had a pretty good opening day,” said Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire. “It wasn’t too packed. We had no problems with opening day issues. There were some that went off the trail and over some barricades, but that was it.”

Flooding still is restricting access to some areas of the park, and other areas of the park are open, but still muddy. Superintendent Alvin Harper said visitors should dress appropriately.

The Visitor Center is closed.

The Trailheads Concessions, however, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for hungry hikers. Carry-out orders can be placed at the counter and outdoor dining is available on the patio.

The Starved Rock Lodge now is open. Carry-out food service and outdoor dining are offered on the Lodge’s Veranda for paying customers of Starved Rock Lodge. Picnicking will not be allowed on the Veranda but is allowed on the pool patio.

Trail closures: • Matthiessen State Park lower dells area (access to the waterfalls) is closed due to flooding. Upper dells remain open as well as Vermillion River Area trails (second entrance south off of 178).

Library to host Extension live virtual presentation series The LaSalle Public Library will host a series of five live virtual presentations offered by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs.

The series will kick off at 6 p.m. June 9 with “Container Gardening” led by University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener volunteer Natalie Martin.

In this program, moderated by library staff, Martin will explore different plan options, container sizing and care. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to ask questions via live-chat.

The other programs in the series include the following: • “Transformational Gardening” on June 13 at 2 p.m.

• “Rain Gardens” on June 16 at 6 p.m.

• “Landscaping for Birds” on June 20 at 2 p.m.

• “Backyard Birds” on June 23 at 6 p.m.

This program is free, open to the public, and will be presented in an easy-to-use virtual format. ROCK FALLS — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, income-eligible residents now have more time to apply for funding to help with energy bills, thanks to an extension of the deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program, due to end May 31, has been extended until June 30.

Illinois families are facing many challenges to cope with the COVID19 virus. Some have lost jobs or had their hours of employment reduced.

These circumstances could lead to difficulty in paying your utility bill.

If you find yourself in that situation, there may be assistance available through Tri-County Opportunities Council’s LIHEAP program.

This program can help pay a portion of an eligible household’s utility bill. Eligibility is mainly based on household size and income.

Anyone facing difficulty in paying their utility bill and has not applied yet is encouraged to contact Tri-County Opportunities Council

as soon as possible. If a household has already received a LIHEAP benefit since Oct. 1, 2019, they still might be eligible for additional benefit through reconnection assistance.

LIHEAP applications will be taken through June 30, or until funds are exhausted. The gross income for the 30 days prior to the application date cannot exceed the following: one-person household, $1,561; two-person household, $2,114; three-person household, $2,666; four-person household, $3,219; five-person household, $3,771; six-person household, $4,324.

Documents needed at the time of application are: proof of income for all household members for the previous 30 days including the day of application, proof of Social Security numbers for all members of the household, a copy of current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if energy directly paid for), a copy of rental agreement (if renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information, and proof the household received TANF or other bene-

Things to know about food safety after a flood

During the spring season, be prepared for heavy rains and the possibility for flooding.

In the Illinois Valley, we have seen our share of flooding this year. University of Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator Susan Glassman offers flood resources for food safety that are available on their website at https://extension. illinois.edu/blmp.

Floodwaters may carry silt, raw sewage, oil or chemical wastes.

Filth and disease-causing bacteria in floodwater will contaminate food, making it unsafe to eat.

Glassman commented, “Be aware of what you can keep and what has to be thrown out with flood contaminated foods.”

It’s important to take the proper precautions to prevent illness from unsafe food. What’s considered unsafe? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention shares guidelines on their website for after a disaster, They recommend to throw out food that may have come in contact with flood or stormwater; perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power

outages; and those with an unusual odor, color or texture. Unsafe food can make you sick even if it looks, smells and tastes normal. Remember, “When in doubt, throw it out.”

According to FoodSafety. gov, after a flood, Glassman noted, “Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood or stormwater.” Throw away and salvage with the following guidelines: • Food with an unusual odor, color or texture.

• Food in packages that are not waterproof.

• Food in cardboard containers, including juice/milk/baby formula boxes.

• Food containers with screwcaps, snap-lids, crimped caps, twist caps, flip tops and snap tops.

• Home-canned foods because they cannot be disinfected.

• Canned foods or food containers that are bulging, opened or damaged. Throw out cans or food containers that spurt liquid or foam when you open them or contain food that is discolored, moldy, or smells bad.

Remember, when it doubt, throw

it out!

Commercially prepared foods in cans, plastic or metal pouches (like flexible, shelf-stable juice package can be salvaged: • Remove labels if possible. Note the expiration date.

• Brush or wipe away dirt or silt.

• Wash cans and pouches with hot, soapy water.

• Rinse cans and pouches with clean, safe water.

Sanitize cans and pouches in one of two ways: • Place them in a solution of 1 cup (8 oz/240 mL) of unscented household bleach in 5 gallons of water for 15 minutes, OR • Put in a pot of water, bring to a boil and continue boiling for 2 minutes.

Re-label cans or pouches with a marker. Include the expiration date.

Use food in cans or pouches as soon as possible.

Take proper care to be safe and eat safe food. Ashleigh Collins is a member of North Stars in LaSalle County. Interior design and sheep have been her favorite projects. She has shown sheep for six years and has made

four interior design projects.

When asked what she has learned from 4-H, Collins replied, “4-H helped me learn more about community service and how I can be a better member of my community. I also enjoyed working on committees and being part of a successful team.”
