Murder trial begins for fatal blaze SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The trial for a Villa Park man accused of starting a car fire that spread to a Lombard home and killed his ex-girlfriend began this week. sidy, after a party was hosted at Morgan’s home to celebrate her 25th birthday. Jurors were selected Monday and Tuesday, and opening arguments began Tuesday afternoon. Mandoline previously pleaded not guilty to all charges in August 2012.
At a hearing a year later, a video was presented in court that showed Mandoline being interviewed by the Lombard Police Department. In it, Mandoline admitted to lighting the car on fire. Prosecutors said Mandoline was angry after being escorted out of the party at Morgan’s home in the 1000 block of South Ahrens Avenue on July 21, 2012. He allegedly returned later that night, stuck a piece of paper in the fuel tank of a car outside the home and lit it on fire. Flames engulfed the car, and the fire spread to the house.
Morgan died from smoke inhalation, and Cassidy was burned on almost half of his body. Morgan’s young son was able to escape the home. The trial is expected to extend to next week, said Paul Darrah, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman. If Mandoline is convicted, he could face a sentence of between 20 and 60 years for the first-degree murder charges. If he’s convicted of aggravated arson along with first-degree murder, the prison sentence could be for natural life.
Firefighters respond to 3 fires during single shift SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA VILLA PARK – Sunday night and Monday morning were busy for the Villa Park Fire Department, as firefighters extinguished three blazes during a single shift, according to a village news release. One person was injured in the fires. At 8:23 p.m. Sunday, the department’s Gold Shift responded to an oven fire at a single-family home in the 200 block of East Kenilworth Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they observed the fire coming from the back of the stove and extending up the wall. Kitchen cabinets also were on fire. They were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes of arrival, the release stated. Residents were home, but they exited the home safely. The fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage, according to the release. Villa Park was assisted by the Elmhurst and Lombard fire departments and Oakbrook Terrace and York Center fire protection districts. Prior to the fire, the circuit breaker was tripped and reset a few times in an attempt to start the oven. The Villa Park Fire Department reminds residents to call an electrician if a circuit breaker is tripping repeatedly, the release stated. Villa Park firefighters re-

Upon arrival, companies observed heavy fire on the second floor of a two-story detached garage. The fire is believed to have started in a ground-floor addition to the garage and spread upstairs to the second floor, according to the release. Excessive storage on the compartmentalized second floor created a structural collapse risk. Firefighters worked from outside the structure to extinguish the fire. Within an hour of arrival, crews were able to control the fire, the release stated. The amount of damage re-
mains undetermined, and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, according to the release. The homeowner was transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening after attempting to extinguish the fire prior to calling 911, the release stated. The Lombard Fire Department, York Center Fire Protection District, Elmhurst Fire Department, Addison Fire Protection District and Wood Dale Fire Department assisted on the scene. Members of the Oak Brook Fire Department and Bensenville Fire Protection District covered Stations
81 and 82. The Gold Shift extinguished a third fire Monday morning. At 6:31 a.m., firefighters responded to a call from a passerby who observed sparks on the roof of a commercial building in the 800 block of South Route 83. The building, occupied by Hassett Express, is located in Elmhurst, but Villa Park was the first company to respond, the release stated. A light on the roof may have shorted out and caused the roof to catch fire, according to the release. Crews extinguished the fire within 45 minutes of their arrival, and damage was minimal.

the theater lost about 70 percent of its seats. This doesn’t concern Gilbert, however, because the AMC Yorktown 18 isn’t focusing on quantity. “It’s about the quality experience,” he said. Reserved seating has its benefits, such as allowing patrons to reserve good seats by ordering tickets ahead of time, so if they happen to be running late, they’re not stuck sitting in the front row by default, Gilbert said. However, this also means groups need to order their tickets at the same time in order to

For Patti and Kerry Bahnick of Hinsdale, they could tell there was something new about the theater, even though they hadn’t been to the AMC Yorktown in the past. “It smells new. Is it new?” Patti Bahnick asked as she entered an auditorium to see “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I” with her husband of nearly 31 years for an

and bar were ready to go to begin offering dine-in services for patrons. The AMC Yorktown 18 is the first AMC theater in the Chicago area to have both the dine-in option and new seating. The theater was chosen by the company for a variety of reasons, including the population density around the theater, its clientele and guest feedback, Gilbert said. Gone are the days of sneaking into movies, as each seat is now reserved. The new recliners also take up more room than the previous seats did, so

LOMBARD – Moviegoers can expect to experience a new AMC Yorktown 18 when they head to the theater this year. After being closed for nine days in December, the cinema reopened for the holiday rush, sporting a new interior design, dine-in food and drink menus, and large, reclining seats in each auditorium. For those who remember spending their middle school weekends with Dance Dance Revolution and other arcade games in the theater’s lobby and upstairs area, it’s a bit different, as AMC focused on providing a more adult, quality experience at the movies. “We really wanted to elevate the guest experience in this area,” General Manager John Gilbert said. “It’s a really high-end area.” While the renovation project cost upwards of $10 million, ticket prices have remained the same, and there are no plans to increase them, Gilbert said. Phased construction began in early September. The theater’s wings took turns having their auditoriums renovated, in order to keep the theater open. The entire theater did close for a short time, and when it reopened, the kitchen
afternoon date. Kerry Bahnick took advantage of the theater’s dine-in option, ordering food that was delivered to his seat as he waited for the movie to begin. “It’s fantastic,” Kerry Bahnick said of having that service available. In the lobby, guests are able to see into the kitchen, where much of the food, including the sauces and ice cream, is made from scratch. They order their food at a counter, and it is then brought to them at their seats. From their seats, they can push on a call button to order drinks or dessert or receive other assistance. If they want to order other types of food, they’ll need to do so at the counter, but it will again be brought to them as they watch the movie, with minimal disturbance to other guests. Beyond the typical popcorn and candy, the kitchen serves sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizza, other hot entrees and more. The theater now boasts a full bar, and people are able to enjoy food and drinks in the lobby without actually seeing a movie. All the new amenities set the stage for a pleasant day at the movies for the Bahnicks, as they settled in to take in a movie in their plush recliners. “It just makes it a nice outing,” Patti Bahnick said.

An UberX driver from Villa Park has been accused of kidnapping and attempting to sexually assault a passenger. Adnan Nafasat, 46, of Villa Park is charged with attempted criminal sexual assault, kidnapping and unlawful restraint Adnan after allegedly Nafasat touching, choking and trying to force his 21-year-old male passenger to perform a sex act July 31, 2014, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said during Wednesday’s bond hearing, Nafasat answered an early morning call July 31 for a passenger near 700 W. Cornelia Ave. in Chicago. Nafasat asked the passenger to sit in the front because the back seats were dirty and broken. After he began driving, Na-
fasat allegedly touched the passenger over the clothes. Nafasat, weighing 240 pounds, held the 110-pound passenger by the neck to prevent him from leaving the car while stopped in traffic. Prosecutors said Nafasat drove to a neighborhood the passenger did not recognize. Nafasat then exposed himself and tried to force the passenger to perform a sex act. The 21-yearold pushed away and begged to be taken home, at which time, Nafasat drove to the requested destination and dropped off the passenger. During the altercation, the passenger used his cellphone to capture images of Nafasat and his first name, which authorities used to find Nafasat, along with records provided by Uber, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said Nafasat admitted to picking up the passenger, touching him and trying to force him into a sex act. Bail was set at $150,000. Nafasat’s next court date is scheduled Feb. 3.

VFW, district recognize Glenbard East faculty
LBS/VPA Suburban Life • mysuburbanlife.com • Friday, January 16, 2015 • ED
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – January has been filled with positive news for the faculty at Glenbard East High School in Lombard. First, Glenbard East band director Tara Cappelletti was chosen as the Veterans of For- Tara eign Wars High Cappelletti School Teacher of the Year for Lombard VFW Lilac Post 5815, and then Principal Josh Chambers was named assistant super- Josh intendent for Chambers human resources in Glenbard Township High School District 87. Cappelletti received the VFW 19th District Teacher of the Year Award. The 19th District includes area counties outside of Cook County. According to the Lombard VFW, Cappelletti was selected not only because of her impressive and outstanding reputation at the high school but also because of her activities outside of the school, including volunteer musical performances sponsored by veterans organizations and the community, a district news release stated. She was honored at an awards banquet Saturday. “Her selection reflects highly upon Glenbard East High School and the community,” Lombard Lilac VFW Post 5815 Post Chaplain and Teacher of the Year Committee Chairman Richard “Mike” Mikulecky stated in the release. “We would be delighted with that development because we’ve been rooting for the house for the past four or five years,” Wilson said. “It’s a wonderful building.” In August 2014, the preservation group addressed the district about performing cer-
the appointment of Chambers as assistant superintendent for human resources Jan. 12, according to a district news release. Current position holder Rod Molek will retire June 30, and Chambers will begin in his new role July 1. “I have been very fortunate to spend the last seven years at Glenbard East,” Chambers said in the release. “East is an exceptional school that has great kids, an outstanding staff and a supportive community. It will be tough to move on, but I look forward to being able to support all four Glenbard high schools in this new position.” Chambers has been principal at Glenbard East since 2008. Prior to coming to East, Chambers was assistant principal for administrative services at Community High School in West Chicago and held several other positions within that district. He also has experience as a teacher at Lawndale Community Academy in Chicago, and before shifting his career to education, Chambers worked for Pansophic Systems in Lisle. Chambers completed certification in educational leadership at Aurora University. He earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Concordia University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University. “Mr. Chambers has fostered a positive and inviting student culture and environment at Glenbard East. A key strength in his leadership style is the ability to build strong relationships,” District 87 Superintendent David Larson said in the release. “He possesses keen insight and is able to keep a pulse on problems, issues and opportunities, both in his school and throughout the district.” tain repairs, and members have been discussing ways to fix the house for several years. The district in 2013 found the home to be structurally sound. A 2013 survey estimated the cost of necessary repairs to be $230,000 to $2 million – the latter being the estimate for a complete renovation. The public said in August 2013 they would be in favor of using the house as an assembly or adult education space.

MULTIFOCAL CONTACTS Nearly all middle-aged individuals eventually find it necessary to wear “reading glasses” in order to overcome the focusing problems associated with aging eyes. The complexity of the problem posed by “presbyopia” (aging eyes) becomes compounded by the fact that we now not only read books and other print material, but we also have smartphones and tablet computers with screens that are viewed at different distances than print. Those with prescription lenses can meet this challenge by selecting eyeglasses with multifocal lenses (near, middle, and far distances) that enable them to see all three distances clearly. Now, there are also multifocal contact lenses that bring seeing at three distances to a whole new convenience level. Presbyopes should look into them! Multi-focal contact lenses offer the best of both worlds: no glasses, along with good near and distance vision. For the ultimate in convenience, oneday disposable soft multi-focal lenses allow you to discard the lenses at the end of a day of wear, so there’s no hassle with lens care. When selecting eyewear, please stop by SKOWRON EYE CARE. Some of our eyewear brands include Ray Ban, Fossil, Gucci, Silhouette, Nine West, Juicy Couture, Coach, Maui Jim, and Cole Haan. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Presbyopia generally stems from a gradual thickening and loss of flexibility of the eye’s natural lens.

Glenbard East biology teacher Brent Edgar assists freshman Thomas Cederblad of Lombard with his iPad on Aug. 26, 2014, during class.
When it comes to using technology in education, Glenbard East has an app for that. And so far it looks like the Lombard high school and its fellow District 87 schools have embraced the iPad rollout that saw 2,100 freshmen receive district-issued tablets in August. Midway through the school year, teachers and school officials are reporting creative lesson planning and minimal issues with the iPads. The spirit of civic duty is alive in Lombard. Candidate filings for the April 7 elections are in, and new challengers have emerged for a pair of open Village Board seats as well as Board of Education spots in school districts 44, 45, 87 and 88. Soon, it will be Lombard residents’ turn to get involved. Watch for Suburban Life’s election preview coverage and be informed before going to the polls. January is not only a time for New Year’s resolutions and a fresh start; it is often the beginning of cabin fever as Chicagoans realize there are about three more months of cold temperatures and snow-covered trees. Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean you and your family have to be stuck indoors. There are many activities COMMUNITY indoors and out that keep VOICE both you and your family from catching the winter Jill blues. We can bundle up, get Wejman some fresh air, good exercise and have a refreshed outlook on winter. As a kid, my favorite winter activity was ice skating at our local park district rinks. My friends and I would play hockey or pretend to be Olympic ice skaters and make up routines on the ice. Ice skating is a great calorie burner. Ponds and man-made rinks are available throughout Lombard Park District as long as the weather cooperates. The rinks are set up at Madison Meadow and Sunset Knoll this week, so be sure to lace up your skates. Visit lombardparks. com for ice rink conditions and only skate if there is a green flag present. Sledding can be a perfect way to get an aerobic workout in without hitting the gym. It’s also a favorite among many children. The Lombard Park District maintains two sled hills, one at Sunset Knoll and the other at Four Seasons. Climbing those hills can be quite a challenge but a perfect way to work those leg muscles. Afterwards, warm up with some hot cocoa! Downhill skiing is another fun activity to get some fresh air and enjoy our winter weather. The Lombard Park District is offering a trip for preteens to hit the slopes at Wilmot Mountain this January. Even if you aren’t a preteen, it’s not a bad drive to many of the downhill slopes in Illinois and Wisconsin. It can make a perfect day trip or weekend getaway. You don’t have to be an avid skier to have a good time. The bunny hill and lessons come in handy for those who have never skied. However you choose to stay healthy this winter and keep the kid’s from saying, “I’m bored,” be sure to dress warm, get outdoors and just enjoy yourselves.

I read about the Mindy store closing in the paper last week and now we have another empty building in downtown Elmhurst. Will it take years for another business to rent, like the TCBY building on York [Road]? That building was empty for many, many years. I know the owner wanted to stay there, but Elmhurst raised the rent and they had to leave. Now, we have yet another dental office. This town is not watching out for our small businesses.
Rauner in office now It took Scott Walker two years to turn around Wisconsin. How long will it take Mr. Rauner to do the same in Illinois?

Please have a heart and use common sense with regard to taking care of your beloved pets. When it’s cold outside and you are cold, so are your pets. Like you and I, they need to be inside where it’s warm and cannot survive out in the cold. They are our family, our loved ones and are just as much a part of our family as the human members are. They should never be outside unsupervised, left out all night, left tied up or to fend for themselves. If you cannot do the kind, humane and loving thing by making sure your pets are safe and warm inside, then please do not make the lifelong commitment to take on that responsibility. On that note, if you see an animal in need, don’t be a bystander and do nothing and say, “It’s not my problem.” Step up to the plate, make a difference and do the right thing. Let’s start out 2015 by making the world a better place for our pets and all animals.

lem-based learning that tackles a real problem of voter turnout is the kind of learning that is going to help prepare these students for when they grow up. Students should be prepared for actual real world problems, and not just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic. The kind of thinking that problems should just be “left to the adults” is somewhat old-fashioned, which can be supported by the fact that the adults of today’s America have the most unproductive Congress, in addition to increasing problems with poverty. We all must remember the students of today are the adults of tomorrow.
Proud of downtown Westmont’s beauty Thank you to Mayor Ron Gunter and village officials for making downtown Westmont so beautiful. It was sad to see the crews taking down holiday decorations last week. It was just as sad at the end of the summer to see the absolutely spectacular hanging baskets and planters come to their end. As a 25-year resident, I am as proud as ever to live in Westmont. Please continue to support beautification efforts such as these.

OBITUARIES PAUL C. BROWN
EDWARD J. VERTOVEC
Paul C. Brown, 92, formerly of Lombard, passed away on January 8, 2015. Arrangements by Brust Funeral Home Lombard, 630-629-0094.
Edward J. Vertovec of Elmhurst, IL died on the 12th of January at the age of 91. Ed was born in Elmhurst on March 13th, 1923, to Frank and Caroline Vertovec. He grew up in Elmhurst with his 5 siblings: Fran, Frank, Carl, Ray, and Jean. He later graduated from Elmhurst College and received his law degree from DePaul University. During World War II, he served in the Air Force, specializing in radar navigation training. Following his service, Ed married his beloved wife Betty J. Pace on June 21, 1947. According to Ed, Betty made their 67 years of marriage total happiness and bliss. Ed lived and maintained a local law practice in Elmhurst where he championed numerous public works projects, including the advancement of the Chamber of Commerce and the Elmhurst Park District, along with Co-Chairing the Underpass Committee. In 1988 Ed and Betty retired to Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia. Ed devoted countless hours to his lifelong love of volunteer work, donating his time to multiple organizations including The Chatham County Victim Witness Assistance Program, The Chatham County Juvenile Court Panels (which assisted judges in caring for minors), The Village Library at Skidaway, and The Howard Young Medical Center in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Ed was presented the Thousand Points of Light Volunteer Award by President George H.W. Bush in a ceremony in Salt Lake City. When Ed and Betty moved back to Elmhurst in 2013, he began searching for the right volunteer job. After an incredible experience spending a day in Washington DC on the Honor Flight (with his brother, Ray, amongst many other veterans), Ed became involved in aiding local veterans through his work at The Lexington including organizing a lecture from four Battle of the Bulge survivors just last week. Ed will be remembered for his many great passions including travel, sports, reading, and history. His life-long emphasis on fitness and working out began many years ago at the Elmhurst YMCA with his close friends, The Jolly Boys, and then continued at The Courts where he also played tennis several times a week. He continued playing a biweekly game of tennis until he was

ly g 90. Over the years he also played numerous sports including softball in an Elmhurst league, volleyball, and (perhaps most importantly) golf, which he continued well into his 80s. After retiring from most team sports, he happily sat in bleachers through rain, snow, sleet, sun and heat watching his descendants play a wide variety of sports. For the past 40 years, Ed and Betty also spent countless hours enjoying the comforts of their lake home in the North Woods of Wisconsin with family and friends. To know Ed was to love Ed. He was a devoted husband, father, (great) grandfather, and friend. His frequent greeting of, “ Hello this is sweet and lovable Ed Vertovec,” always rang true. Ed was generous, kind, gentlemanly, positive, brilliant, and humble. He always had a smile on his face and a song on his tongue. He wrote amazing poetry for family occasions, his last being his beloved wife's birthday, where he had the entire room in tears. Ed lived his long life with enthusiasm and optimism. He was always thinking of others and what he could do to help them. His sage advice was welcomed even this week. Ed will be missed more than words can express, but he has made the world a better place. His spirit and his goodness will live on in all whose lives he touched. Ed is survived by Betty and their four children - Kristine (Glenn) Rosenberger, Joe (Nancy Ebaugh), Mary, and Ann (David Audley). Additionally, Ed was an enduring grandfather to nine grandchildren: Tiffani, Brian, Allison, Christopher, Hannah, Sam, Jordan, Ben, and Wil, and three great grandchildren: Hope, Collin and Andrew. He is also survived by his brother, Ray (Anne) and his sister, Jean (Roman) Schmitt. Visitation services will be held Friday, January 16th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst. A Memorial Mass is planned for Saturday, January 17th at Immaculate Conception Church, 134 Arthur, Elmhurst at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Honor Flight Inc. 300 E. Cronin touts economic progress during State of the County address By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The future of DuPage County may look bright in many ways, but there are still many challenges ahead, according to the county board chairman. In front of a crowd of elected officials, chambers of commerce and businesses, Dan Cronin gave an economically focused State of the County address Thursday in Woodridge. Cronin presented remarks and answered questions at the event sponsored by county economic development organization Choose DuPage and supported by chambers in Woodridge, Downers Grove, Darien, Hinsdale and Lisle. The Chairman said he welcomed the opportunity to deliver such an address to so many in the business world, saying the “relationship between DuPage and our business community is vital.” And Cronin believed that connection was flourishing, touting a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in the region thanks to a conscious effort to create a business-friendly environment, he said. “I do think we at the county all join in a chorus of voices that really create a culture out here in DuPage County ... that does really and truly convey the message that ‘We want your business, we support business and we value economic growth,” he said. Cronin said manufacturing was climbing in the county, with 15 straight months of industrial vacancy rate drops through May 2014, and he projects a steady 3.75 percent growth in county sales tax revenue. The county also retains a AAA bond rating from all three major credit agencies, which is the case for fewer than 1 percent of all counties in the U.S., he said. The county is intending to eliminate a quarter-cent sales tax in 2016 as the maligned DuPage Water Commission
transitions to a self-sustaining utility, a mirror of Cronin’s Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency initiative dedicated to reducing the size and cost of local government. The ACT initiative’s successes are highlighted by the county’s continued commitment to a balanced budget, the 45 government jobs that have been cut and more than $30.5 million the county has saved under Cronin’s watch, he said. “But our movement in DuPage is about more than cost cutting,” he said. “We are in the business of growing. Growing ideas, growing hightech manufacturing, growing tomorrow’s businesses.” That is especially important with the changing demographics in the county, he said. Nearly 175,000 residents are considered low income by federal poverty standards, and more than 16 percent of children in DuPage County are food insecure. Cronin pointed specifically to the Rev3 tech and manufacturing incubator, the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, a new regional global marketing initiative to help spur international exports and a recent U.S. Commerce Department designation the region will be eligible to apply for $1.3 billion in federal grants to support job creation. All would be important to give those in need “hand ups” and not “handouts,” he said. Greg Bedalov, president and CEO of Choose DuPage, said the marketing initiative was especially exciting for him, saying in 10 years working in economic development, he had “never seen the type of regional cooperation and collaboration that’s happening right now.” He has high hopes area counties will be able to work together even more to build a more stable economic future through improved marketing, transportation and investment.

We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks Hospitals are now EDWARD-ELMHURST HEALTHCARE. And we are Healthy Driven.

Restaurant reviews
Two Brothers brewpub worth the hunt WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world. Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed. But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels. The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday. Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours. The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge. To accompany my sandwich, I almost picked the sweet potato fries, but am glad I opted for the roasted

Win is sign of Warriors’ improvement By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com
Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com
Willowbrook’s Alonzo Verge Jr. makes a layup Tuesday during a game against West Chicago. The Warriors won and quadrupled their win total of a year ago.
WEST CHICAGO – Having already quadrupled its win total from a year ago after Tuesday’s 63-53 nonconference win against West Chicago, the exciting part for Willowbrook’s boys basketball team is the Warriors still have room to grow. “We are doing pretty good,” guard Alonzo Verge Jr. said. “We have more team chemistry and we are getting better as a team. And the more we keep playing, we will get better and better.” Verge Jr. is one player who continues to shine. He posted 25 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists against the Wildcats. But the sophomore was far from the only contributor. Jake Bruns hit three early 3-pointers as the visitors led 20-4 after the opening quarter and 33-21 at halftime. The senior finished with 15 points. “Jake started off, he was on fire,” Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins said, “and then he knocked down his free throws late.” Kyle Rushing tallied six points and nine rebounds, Chris Roycroft posted six points and six rebounds, and Devin Ramsey finished with five points as Willowbrook improved to 8-6 overall. “I try to get my teammates the ball as much as I can,” Verge Jr. said, “so that they can find their rhythm too.” West Chicago sliced the deficit to as few as six points in the fourth quarter before the visitors closed the game on a 7-3 run. “I told the kids at halftime, they are going to go on a run,” Perkins said. “So just keep our composure, run our offense and get good looks. “When we ran our offense, we were able to get the ball to Kyle for three layups in a row [in the fourth quarter]. That swung the momentum back to us.” Willowbrook was coming off a 72-30 win over Argo on

When we ran our offense, we were able to get the ball to Kyle for three layups in a row [in the fourth quarter]. That swung the momentum back to us.” Chris Perkins Willowbrook coach Jan. 10 which was the team’s first game in 13 days. “That was a nice win,” the coach said. “We started off that game like we started off this [West Chicago] game and we were able to sustain it.” Next up is a trip to Sterling for an invitational in which the Warriors will play two games apiece on Jan. 17 and Jan. 19. “We’ve got four games at the MLK tournament in Sterling,” Perkins said. “It is the inaugural year of that event. We’ve never done this during the school year, where we play two games in a day. We will see how that goes.”

defense continued to get better and better,” Miller said. “That allowed us to hang in there against Metea on Friday. We were up and then we were down. We held them and were able to get the last shot and, fortunately, it was able to go for it for the win. “I thought Saturday night was kind of close at the half and we gave up a little more points. It was 31-31 at the half and that’s more than we’d like to give up in a half. We played better defensively in the second half.” The Rams have won three
games in a row and continue to play well with the team’s full lineup. Starting point guard Terrance Lakes missed the first four games of the year, and East went 2-2 during that stretch. Leading scorer Patrick Peterkin missed six games late in 2014, and the Rams went 1-5 without him. The recent win streak shows the Rams might be turning the corner overall. “That’s the feeling that I had after the weekend,” Miller said. “I really feel like we’re starting to get it. Our practices are starting to get more con-
sistent. Our intensity level is much more consistent and really just getting everybody back. Terrance missed the first four games and Patrick missed some in the middle. We’ve only had everybody for six games and we’ve won five of those.” Now the Rams head into Wheaton Warrenville South’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day tournament. Each of the 16 teams in the field will play two games Saturday and two more Monday. The Rams open against the host Tigers at 1 p.m. Saturday.
