Whether it’s banging on a drum or engaging in a quiet, peaceful activity that’s needed, the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association now has a Sensory Station to help children with disabilities explore their senses.

NEDSRA Recreational Coordinator Colleen Cline was inspired to create the room after learning about the positive effects such facilities have on people with disabilities, especially those with autism. Working with an $8,000 budget, she developed the Sensory Station using an underused art supply space at the organization’s center in Addison.

The roughly 2,500-square-foot room is filled with ropes, elastic bands, a tactile board, texture tables and a variety of furniture and substances that children ages 1 to 18 are invited to experience.

In addition to its many tactile experiences, the Sensory Station also includes colored lights, a dimmer switch to change the mood of the room and mirrors.

Cline said the room was designed to adapt to a child’s needs.

“Typically autism is a sensory-processing disorder,” she said. “Depending where on the spectrum a person falls, they might need more sensory stimulation or less.”

“I’m glad I went because I realized that even though Aleeza is high functioning and doesn’t need the same type of care other kids do, she still has issues with balance and coordination.”

The room is available for use between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays, and families are invited to sign their children up for staff-supervised halfhour time slots in the space.

Among the towns served by NEDSRA are Lombard and Villa Park.

Costs range from $25 for five visits to $50 for 12 visits. Cline said parents also can sign up for Sensory Sensations, a Wednesday evening program designed for the new space.

NEDSRA staff helped create a customized plan for Aleeza, using the room to improve her strength, motor skills and hand-eye coordination, Kane said.

While she initially felt a little too old for the Sensory Station, Aleeza recently went by herself and had a lot of fun, Kane said.

The room offers a unique experience for a variety of ages and disabilities, and so far, it has been very well received, Cline said.

“You can kind of see [the children] just go in and relax,” she said. “They know they can pick what they want to do, play with what they want to play with. When they are in the room, they love it.”

Carlson said the board’s long-range plans include exploring whether or not to pursue a new library building.

“That is something that is really at the grass-roots stage,” she said. “[Kruser] is kind of feeling it out to see if there is enough response that we could have a referendum and get that going.”

Kruser plans to reach out to residents wherever they are, including through social media and personal engagement with the community.

The director, who moved to Lombard two months ago, said she is now a board member of the Lombard Area

dubbed The Robin’s Nest in honor of the donation, Kruser said. It will provide a space for children to participate in early literacy activities and play with interactive toys.

The room will benefit library patrons both young and old, Carlson said, explaining how because of Helen Plum’s open design, it’s been a challenge to ensure adult patrons are not disturbed by their younger counterparts.

The project, which began at the beginning of December, is slated to wrap up by the end of February or early March.

Youth Services offices already have been moved to the library’s former board meeting room to make space for the early literacy area, Kruser said.

Staff are very happy with the change, Carlson said, adding future board meetings will be hosted downstairs in the library’s auditorium.

Clearing some materials out of the front lobby benefits patrons as well, providing them with more room to sit and read. The front lobby now boasts comfortable seating and tables. “[The changes have] really perked things up at the library,” Carlson said.

“It’s good. It’s worthwhile and what we need.”

LOMBARD – As renovation work in the Youth Services Department of the Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard continues, questions remain about the future of the building as a whole.

A story hour room in the youth section of the library is being converted into an active play area, creating 500 square feet of additional space for parents, caregivers and their young children to use, said Virginia Carlson, president of the library’s Board of Trustees.

Other improvements to the library include the shifting of the library’s collection to create more patron space in the front lobby.

For more than a decade now, however, library officials have said what the facility really needs is more room to grow.

In 2004, a referendum seeking voter approval to sell $23.5 million in bonds to fund the creation of a new library building failed with about 56 percent of residents voting against the proposed bond sale.

Barbara Kruser, who was hired as the library’s director in summer 2014, is probing the possibility of another referendum to ask voters again whether or not they’d like to see a new facility.

“There are just no details in place at all right now,” Kruser said. “I’ve only been here five months. It’s just very preliminary discussions with the board.”

“It takes me back to how I felt with my daughter,” the lifelong Villa Park resident said. “All you want to do is take care of your kid, and you have no idea how you’re going to make that happen. If I could take a little bit of that stress away, I could make their whole family life better and let some happiness in.”

Clements created Miracles from Mia in 2006, two years after her daughter Mia died unexpectedly in her sleep at 17 months old. Mia was born with bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney disease and was awaiting a kidney transplant.

The nonprofit organization provides financial and emotional support to Illinois families who are caring for ill or disabled children.

“People are so grateful, but I do it for my daughter, to honor her memory,” Clements said.

Clements said the organization has helped 25 children, mostly from the western suburbs, since its beginning, amounting to more than $176,000 in support. She said the diagnoses of the children have varied from cancer to muscular dystrophy to spina bifida

and various chromosomal disorders.

The Scafidi family of Westmont is one of two recipient families this year. Their 14-month-old son, Paolo, had a stroke at 8 months and has had several seizures. His mother, Renee, said he now has occupational, speech and physical therapy five days a week.

She said the money from Miracles from Mia will be used to pay Paolo’s medical bills. The family applied for assistance in December and learned they were chosen in early January.

Survey will help shape the future of District 45 One of the ways in which we gauge our success as a school district is by giving the 5Essentials Survey to our parents, students, and staff. The Illinois 5Essentials survey will be administered online

by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. Teachers, parents and middle school students will be asked to share their thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness regarding their home schools. Teachers also will be asked to participate in the survey.

ISBE requires all school districts in Illinois to conduct the survey. By doing so, each school district is able to develop and implement a school improvement plan to meet the specific needs of each community. Over time, communities will be able to monitor our progress through the survey. It is simply another tool for accountability and transparency for the work we do with children. Our greatest investment, the students, will benefit from our continuous efforts to improve.

In order for us to use the results to guide our practice and plan for school improvement, we need at least 20 percent of our parents and students to take the survey. When we receive the results, our district and building leadership teams will begin to take action. It is our hope the data will help us serve our community better as we help each child reach his or her full academic potential.

Data results also will be published on the Illinois School Report Card next October. This is perfect timing for School District 45 as we will be asking stakeholders to participate in our biannual strategic planning process in the fall. During that time, we will begin to develop our priorities for the next two years.

Breuder’s windfall part of a pattern of poor leadership In a state with budgets in disarray, with the biggest pension crisis in the nation, with one governor in prison for corruption and another just recently released, it’s pretty tough to stomach Robert Breuder’s $760,000 payoff to retire early as College of DuPage president.

At $142 per credit hour, a full-time student at College of DuPage taking 15 credit hours of classes can expect to pay $6,390 in tuition and fees alone. So Breuder’s windfall could pay for 118 students to go to school for a year, tuition free.

Beyond the money itself, there’s the problem of what it represents. With this deal, which the College of DuPage trustees have approved twice now, Breuder gets to walk away from this job proud of all his achievements, convinced his tenure was a magnificent success, marred only by some meaningless unpleasantness at the very end.

Oh, and he gets a building named after him.

But what we don’t know is how many of those achievements and grand successes are empty. Breuder’s surprise retirement has come on the heels of the release of an email that showed the kind of dirty politics he’s capable of. He’s been exposed as just another Illinois charlatan, the kind of leader who has no qualms about pointing one way and then running the other.

Breuder’s email to the board, which leaked in July, shows him proposing to deceive the state by making a planned project more politically attractive in order to wrangle $20 million in funding that the college was owed.

In the email, Breuder expressed frustration over dealing with the governor’s office to free up the $20 million and said he wanted the board to convey the need for a teaching and learning facility as a means to obtain the money.

commenting on the need for a facility]; however, not being able to say how we would use the state’s money (perhaps no real need) could lessen our chances to break the money loose at this time (the political moon is rising),” Breuder said in the email. “A building that focuses on teaching and learning is politically attractive; more so than let’s say a student center, PE facility, etc.”

Breuder also suggested getting the funding from the state and coming up with a plan of how to spend it at a later date.

“There is also the option of telling the Governor we want the money, will bank it until we figure out how to use it and then building something,” Breuder said in the email. “Bottom line: I need some room to breathe on this matter so I can enhance the likelihood we get the $20 million soon.”

The Chicago suburbs have seen something like this play out before. It was only in 2009 that McHenry County College up in Crystal Lake told their president, Walt Packard, his services were no longer needed. They decided they couldn’t fire him, though, and gave him another $200,000, plus benefits, for his trouble.

Looking further downstate, when University of Illinois President Michael Hogan was fired in 2012 after just 20 months on the job – after succeeding another fired president – he was awarded a one-year, $285,100 “sabbatical” before he then returned as a history professor.

Then these “leaders” go on to collect exorbitant pensions on top of the one-time piles of cash.

As Illinois residents, as taxpayers in DuPage County, we can have no tolerance for these kinds of shenanigans anymore. We don’t want to hear that this is how things get done. Somehow, other states manage to get things accomplished without constantly resorting to dirty dealing.

These payouts for failure have to stop.

12 Public, legislators denounce COD president’s $760,000 buyout

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com An estimated 400 members of the public attended Wednesday’s special College of DuPage Board of Trustees meeting to air their grievances about the school president’s severance payment.

The board voted – for the second time – to approve the $762,000 in severance for college President Robert Breuder’s retirement. Trustees voted 6-1 in favor of the buyout, with Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton as the lone dissenter.

Wednesday’s meeting was the board’s second in less than a week to discuss the retirement package, and it was called to clarify a procedural motion regarding whether the board should have formally closed debate before voting on the severance during the first meeting Jan. 22.

In the end, the vote remained the same, with trustees approving an addendum to Breuder’s contract allowing him to retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated.

In addition, Breuder will receive a $762,867.77 lump-sum payment, according to the board-approved contract provisions. The college also will name its new Homeland Security Education

Center after him.

Trustees indicated their hands were tied on the buyout because of how previous boards had structured Breuder’s contract.

“In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have severance packages,” Trustee Kim Savage said. “But we do have a contract that, if we end the contract, we owe him the balance of the contract.”

Chairwoman Erin Birt said the board quantified 1½ years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to an agreement on the amount of money for the severance pay.

“I think every single person around this table worked very hard at this,” Birt said.

That didn’t stop the public from attending the meeting in droves to voice their disapproval. In all, about 400 people came, with 75 speaking during a public comment session that ran for more than three hours.

Adam Andrzejewski, founder of Elmhurst-based watchdog group For The Good of Illinois, which has been working to make details of Breuder’s contract public, said the board violated state law by not providing contract specifics to taxpayers prior to voting Jan. 22.

“This board admits that it secretly negotiated Dr. Breuder’s severance

agreement for nine months, then didn’t recite the details into the record before last Thursday’s public vote,” he said.

“That violated the Open Meetings Act.” Andrzejewski and the Edgar County Watchdogs have filed suit against the college for the alleged violation.

Mary Kranz, a former trustee at the college who served from 1995 to 2001, urged the board not to vote for the severance pay because of what it would do to the community.

“The taxpayers of DuPage County cannot afford this tax burden,” she said.

West Chicago resident Louise Handel, who is an alumna of the college, said she didn’t like that the trustees shifted the blame.

“I’m kind of offended and insulted when I hear board members blame previous boards,” she said. “You don’t just get to say, ‘Pass, that wasn’t me.’”

State legislators even took time to address the trustees. Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, said the board politicians in Springfield already are talking about what’s going on at the college.

“What you have done as a board contributes to the bad reputation Illinois has with corruption,” she said.

Late last week, Ives announced she would ask the state Auditor General to audit the state funding the college has

received during the past three fiscal years. She said she wouldn’t hesitate pulling $762,000 from the college’s state funding as a result of Breuder’s buyout.

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, also criticized the board for the amount of the severance payment.

“This is outrageous. There is no precedent for this in a community college setting in Illinois,” Breen said. “I hate to say this, but this board has betrayed the trust of this community.”

Breuder refused to comment on his retirement and the proceedings surrounding it.

Several members of the public were upset Breuder would be the Homeland Security Education Center’s namesake, a decision the board voted in favor of in May 2013.

Area residents urged the board to reconsider and name it after Staff Sgt. Robert Miller, a Wheaton resident who fought in Afghanistan and died protecting his fellow soldiers. He received the Medal of Honor in 2008.

Kirk Allen of the Edgar County Watchdogs said Miller would be a much more appropriate choice because he “paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

The next scheduled board meeting is Feb. 19.

“It’s been so hard,” Scafidi said.

“Miracles from Mia has been a godsend. We were getting to the point of wondering what we were going to do, and this is almost like a miracle.”

She said the emotional support she’s received from Clements and the community has been humbling.

“It’s comforting to talk to Georgianna. What she does is amazing,” Scafidi said. “This has been so traumatic for us, but people let us know they were there. So many friends and family have reached out and helped us in so many ways.”

Lombard resident Nicole Tyszkiewicz’s daughter, McKenna, 7, was born with several disabilities and requires 24-hour care. Her family received help from the organization in 2009.

She said the most important part of Miracles from Mia isn’t the check.

“It’s more about the emotional support,” Tyszkiewicz said. “It’s just somebody saying, ‘We care.’ Georgianna knew what I was going through, and she made sure we didn’t feel alone.

You can’t do this alone. You need to lean on others, and Georgianna understands that.”

Matt Adamczyk of Villa Park said he is looking forward to attending this

year’s Cupid’s Kisses. His 7-year-old son, Sebastian, has Down syndrome, and his family was a recipient at the 2013 gala. Adamcyzk said he hopes Miracles from Mia continues to grow so it can help more families like his.

“There are a lot of families in our area with kids who have special needs,” he said. “We need to get the word out that there are families who need assistance, and there are kids who benefit from that assistance in many ways.”

Clements said there were about 450 people at Cupid’s Kisses last year, and she is hoping for the same number – or more – this year. She said she and the Miracles from Mia board have worked very hard planning the event and everything they’ve done is “from the heart.”

“It makes us feel good to do it,” Clements said. “If Mia’s watching, I hope she thinks we’re doing a good thing, and that she’s proud of us.”

Clements hopes to continue hosting the event and helping other families “until there’s no more money or no more sick kids.” She described this as a “mission” and doesn’t want to put a time limit on how long she’ll be doing it.

“People tell me I’m strong, but I’d be happy to be weak and have my daughter,” Clements said. “I didn’t get a choice. But people need me, and that’s why I’m here.”

Bien Trucha treats Glen Ellyn to a toda madre GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort.

Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior.

Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia.

Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter.

Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans.

The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal.

Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch.

LOMBARD – Glenbard East has been up and down this season, but one of the Rams’ steadier players has been sophomore Mike Finley.

Finley led the Rams with 17 points in a 52-49 win against Plainfield East during Saturday’s When Sides Collide Shootout.

The sophomore, who is in his second year on varsity, has become a consistent piece in the starting lineup.

“I just told him I think probably since Christmas he’s gotten to that point now where he’s consistent every night,” coach Scott Miller said.

“He’s not up here one game and down here the next. He’s just kind of steady.

He’s a big reason our rebounding is better because he’s a big perimeter guy for us and he does a great job on the glass.

“He’s just got to keep going, and I think he will.”

Finley was up with the varsity team as a freshman and started then as well, but despite appearing ready for varsity physically as a strong, sturdily-built 6-foot-3 guard he definitely showed his youth at times.

Finley said his game has improved a lot this season, especially his jump shot. Against the Bengals, he made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and was fouled on a 3-pointer the possession after that, making two of the three free throws.

“I’m more comfortable and confident this year,” Finley said. “I’m trying to be more aggressive.”

Saturday was a big game from Finley, but an even bigger win for the Rams as a team. Plainfield East features Illinois recruit Aaron Jordan.

The senior guard scored 27 points, but the Rams withstood his scoring barrage.

East led by as many as 12 points early in the third quarter, but the game was tied at 37-37 entering the fourth quarter. The game remained close down the stretch, but the Rams never trailed.

“We’ve kind of had a roller coaster year and I thought we took big steps [Jan. 23] and then obviously taking some big steps here,” Miller said after Saturday’s win. “Our defense has been really good all year and it was again.”

Patrick Peterkin also scored in double figures with 12 points against the Bengals.

Eight straight as Warriors eye history

Not even a cold slowed down Verge last weekend when the Warriors won two West Suburban Gold games, including a rare win at Proviso East, 68-65 Saturday. Both games were on the road, starting with Friday’s 5755 overtime win at Leyden.

Verge scored 25 points in the win at Leyden, including 21 in the second half and overtime, and poured in 35 more at Proviso East, including the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds.

“It was fun because this was my first time doing something like that,” Verge said of the OT win at Leyden. “I just had to play through the game. I got a real bad cold so I was kind of struggling.”

Willowbrook is now 14-6 overall and on an eight-game winning streak heading into today’s 7:30 p.m. game at District 88 rival Addison Trail.

This Warriors’ team is starting to reach into the history books of the program. Willowbrook hadn’t picked up a win against Proviso East since 2009 and hasn’t won 20 games since 1972.

While 20 wins is still a ways away, this team is playing well enough to think it’s possible with half of the conference schedule remaining.

One encouraging sign is the Warriors’ ability to win close games. Willowbrook is 12-3 in games decided by 10 points or less this season, including six such games during the eight-game winning streak.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GREENSBORO, N.C. – Addison native Alexa Scimeca and her partner Christopher Knierim won the pairs competition at the 2015 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday.

Scimeca and Knierim are first-time national champions, and their win Saturday qualifies them for the worlds, which will take place in Shanghai, Chi- Alexa na, in March. At the Scimeca nationals, which took place at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., Scimeca and Knierim posted the best score in the short program and in the free skate.

The pair earned a score of 74.01 points in the short program on Thursday, which set an event record under the current scoring system which was put in place in 2004. They followed up with a score of 136.48 in Saturday’s free skate, which was also the best score of the day and set another personal best score. Scimeca and Knierim, who got engaged in April of 2014, finished more than 10 points ahead of the second place team of Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier. In 2013, Scimeca and Knierim placed second at nationals, but were fourth last year in an Olympic-qualifying year.
