VILLA PARK – The Villa Park Public Library is meeting people where they are in the digital age, as it introduces a new service to patrons that gives them access to hundreds of thousands of movies, music albums, audiobooks and more. This digital service, called hoopla, only requires users to have a Villa Park library card in order to stream or temporarily download materials onto their computer, smartphone or tablet. Villa Park joined other libraries in the Chicago area and beyond that are using hoopla when it began offering the service mid-December after noticing a decline in circulation of its hard materials, said Sean Birmingham, the library’s head of adult services. “It’s what our users are using, so we’ve got to keep up with the new technologies,” Birmingham said. While there is a cost to the library to offer hoopla – same as there would be to purchase

Information about hoopla is displayed Monday at the Villa Park Public Library. hard copies of materials – the service requires very little work on the part of the library, Birmingham said. The work that is required includes monitoring hoopla usage based on reports sent by the service to the library of how many materials are being borrowed by Villa Park patrons. This task is the responsibility of a newly created digital position at the library. The virtual services librarian, who began Monday, also will be responsible for managing the library’s other e-content and databases.
After the retirement of a staff member, the Villa Park library saw it needed help in the digital arena and wanted to keep up with what others were offering, Birmingham said. “If we don’t, we know people will go elsewhere,” he said. Library patrons can access hoopla by signing up with their library card and an email address at hoopladigital.com. The service is free. Users are able to borrow 12 items per month through hoopla, and they don’t have to
worry about returning what they rent, as the materials will automatically expire when they’re due. One perk of hoopla is there is no waiting period to borrow an item like there would be to rent limited physical copies of a book, CD or movie at the library, Birmingham said. However, at this time, only audiobooks are currently available through hoopla. In order to borrow e-books with text, patrons need to use other services offered through the library. While hoopla is still new to patrons, it is being used, Birmingham said. The hope is to spread the word and encourage more people to check out the service, as more and more people are seeking out digital materials. “That’s the future,” Birmingham said.
“I would say that so far, it seems to be going better than expected for this early.”

“It’s kind of taken over as the norm for us,” he said. At Glenbard East High School, English teacher Jennifer O’Connor has her students use the iPad camera to record themselves giving a speech and provide a self assessment of the performance, according to district Communications Coordinator Peg Mannion. Students will look back on previous videos to see how they progress. Monaghan said the two biggest outcomes of the iPad rollout are the increased organization and heightened engagement of students. He also said he doesn’t see any major changes that need to be made. If he could do it again, Monaghan said he would make minor tweaks, but nothing substantial. “I would say that so far, it seems to be going better than expected for this early,” he said. He credited the students and teachers with all the success. “As principal, I’ve been very pleased,” Monaghan said.

Teachers across the district are incorporating the iPads in new and innovative ways. Gary Heilers, department chair for physical education, health and driver’s education at Glenbard North High
during class, but tracking the data was much more difficult. “Now we have some concrete stuff,” Heilers said. The iPads also are being used in the weight room, where Heilers has the students video model themselves doing a squat. After that, they watch the recording to see if they are doing the exercise correctly and where to improve their form. “To video model is great because they actually get a sense of what they’re doing wrong and right,” he said. In health classes, students each get remote controls to answer questions. The iPad tabulates the responses and Heilers can use the data to determine whether students understand the subject matter. Driver’s education classes don’t include iPads yet since only freshmen have them, but Heilers said next year’s students will likely do peer assessments of other students’ driving with the iPads.

Glenbard Township High School District 87 administrators and teachers are pleased with the progress students have made since the district’s iPad rollout began last semester. In August 2014, the 2,100 Glenbard freshmen received district-issued iPads, which hold their textbooks, novels, workbooks and assignment materials. Glenbard West High School Principal Peter Monaghan said the program’s success shouldn’t be a surprise. Students and teachers all underwent training before the school year so they would know how to use the iPads and relevant applications. Monaghan said he was a little nervous about the rollout, but thanks to “a great deal of preparation,” there haven’t been any major issues so far. Teachers and students alike have gone beyond his expectations in terms of adapting to the devices, he said. Monaghan said he recently got the chance to watch the iPads being used in a U.S. history class. Students were able to read articles and complete and submit their home-

Dinner can be tough; Bridge Communities offers food for thought Do you stare into your refrigerator wondering what to make for dinner? Do you have a hard time finding nutritious foods that your kids will actually eat? Have you found it difficult to find foods that are both healthy and budget friendly? These are issues all families face, and Bridge Communities’ families are no different. Throughout a family’s COMMUNITY time with Bridge, they learn VOICE a number of life skills. Now, Lisa how to cook healthy meals for the family has been added Doyle to the list. Bridge hosts healthy eating workshops at least twice a year at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville, led by volunteer Suzanne Thibeault and Bridge’s community outreach coordinator, Vicky Joseph. The classes are made available by sponsorships from J.R. Albert, Families Helping Families, PhilCon and Whole Foods. More than 40 parents and children attend each session and benefit from the recipe demonstrations, tips and tastings. At our most recent class, Bridge families learned how to make cauli-rice and zucchini noodles, or zoodles. Registered dietitian Toni Havala also spoke to the class about weight management and met one on one with clients to help them set personal goals. Teens attend the classes with their parents while kids ages 6 to 12 attend their own Let’s Move! class, teaching about healthy food and exercise. Child care is even provided on site for kids ages 5 and younger. Parents also are taught different tactics for how to introduce unfamiliar foods to young kids. After the most recent workshop this fall, one attendee, Nydia, wrote us to say, “I just wanted to share a new food we tried and liked. My oldest daughter ate it, too! She’s my cautious eater. It is spaghetti squash, onions, kale, spinach and Parmesan cheese. I also added zucchini because I had a little bit in the fridge.” Another client, Maureen, attended the workshop in April and used her newfound knowledge while interviewing for a job at a grocery store. She was immediately hired to work in the produce department, and her daughter was hired for a summer job in the bakery, too! Seeing the long-lasting effects of Bridge’s healthy eating workshops is the ultimate reward.

Brewmaster Paul Kreiner is one of three longtime friends who recently opened Noon Whistle Brewing in Lombard.
Good luck to a new Lombard business that opened on Roosevelt Road right before Christmas and offers a unique take on the popular craft beer craze. The offerings at Noon Whistle Brewing are lower in alcohol concentration than other craft beers, presumably so customers can enjoy a beer at noon. Cheers, it’s lunchtime. After rare back-to-back defeats to finish 2014, Montini’s girls basketball team picked itself up Tuesday with a victory to open the new year. By the way, those two loses to finish their own Christmas tournament came against a couple of Class 4A state powerhouses in Benet and Marian Catholic. There’s still plenty of hope that Montini can bring home its fourth Class 3A state title in five years come March. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

To save money, try going to community college Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

Downers Grove should consider village complex
There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. LOMBARD – Healthy Lombard is now accepting nominations for its annual Health Heroes recognition, which honors people and companies for making healthy choices. The awards honor individuals who have made a noticeable effort to improve their personal health and wellness during the past year and work sites that have made positive, healthy changes in their work environments, according to a Healthy Lombard news release. Those who are chosen for the Health Heroes recognition will receive their awards at the 2015 Healthy Lombard Fitness February Fair at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at Yorktown Shopping Center. The fair will be from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., and anyone is welcome to attend. It will feature health-related displays, free health screenings and the opportunity to
participate in interactive presentations. This health and fitness event is made possible through the sponsorship of Partners of Healthy Lombard, a nonprofit established in 2009 to address childhood obesity and promote healthy living for everyone, the release stated. Health Heroes nominations should include a one-paragraph explanation describing what the person has done to get healthy or what the company has done to make the workplace healthier for its employees this year. Contact information, including name, address, phone number and email address, needs to be included for both the nominator and the nominee. The nomination should be emailed by Jan. 31 to Healthy Lombard founder Jay Wojcik at jay@healthylombard.com. Questions also should be directed to this email address.

After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit increase is warranted. Then it would require approval from the tollway’s board of directors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect.

In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Connie Caruso stands beside one of the pianos Wednesday at her Elmhurst home. The popular piano teacher was forced to retire this summer after 40 years because of health issues. cess to being open to teaching the type of music her students were interested in learning. “I taught jazz, improvisation, piano literature, theory, a combination of music. I didn’t limit myself to a certain type,” she said. “And that’s why the majority of my kids stayed with me until they graduated from high school.” Elmhurst resident Lisa Hartley has two daughters, 12 and 18, who studied under Caruso for several years after she was referred to the piano teacher by friends. Hartley said Caruso is “like a grandma” to all her students. “She’s always positive in her comments and never made the kids feel bad if they didn’t practice,” she said. “She touched a lot of lives, for sure. We feel lucky we had her. She’s such a strong teacher and a good person.” Hartley said she and her daughters cried when they received Caruso’s letter announcing her retirement, even though they weren’t surprised. “She instilled a love of music [in the kids],” Hartley said. “She wanted them to enjoy it. I hope my older daughter picks it up again as an adult because she had such a strong foundation.” Westchester resident Shir-
ley Jayne, 83, took lessons from Caruso for about 20 years. She said Caruso taught her how to play the organ and piano, and they’ve since become close friends. “She was a magnificent teacher,” Jayne said. “She adjusted what she taught to the ability of each student. She’s patient and caring and made a terrific impact on her kids. They were heartbroken when she retired. She was that inspiring to them.” These days, Caruso is enjoying her retirement and continues to improve, thanks to daily physical therapy sessions at her home. “At first I couldn’t sit in a car or stand at a sink,” Caruso said. “But now I can play piano for 15 minutes [at a time]. I was determined to play again. I hope to be able to play for hours.” However, it’s unlikely Caruso will go back to teaching, even if she’s physically able to, she said. “I miss the kids, and I do miss teaching,” Caruso said. “But it’s so demanding. It’s kind of nice to be retired now. I can see my grandkids more often, and my husband doesn’t have to be quiet when I’m teaching. I had a long career, and I enjoyed every moment.”

ELMHURST – The hardest thing Connie Caruso had to do during her students’ piano recital last May was to put on a smile, knowing it would be her last as their teacher. “They didn’t know it was my last recital, but I knew,” Caruso said. “It was hard because I didn’t tell them, and it was very emotional for me. I cried.” Caruso, 78, retired this summer from teaching piano in Elmhurst after almost 40 years. She broke her pelvis from a fall in February but continued to teach, despite the pain. Doctors then found a fracture in her spine in June. “I was devastated that I had to give it up,” Caruso said. “I couldn’t sit at a keyboard and use my arms to play. Otherwise, I’d probably still be teaching.” Caruso handwrote letters to each of her students after May’s recital, explaining why she had to retire. She said she had strong reactions from some. “I had kids calling me crying, but I encouraged them to look elsewhere for other teachers. Some did, and some didn’t,” she said. Caruso began playing piano at 9 years old. She said she fell in love with it immediately, even describing the piano as her “guide to happiness.” She took lessons throughout high school, and one of her teachers, Juliet Hatchet, studied under French composer and pianist Claude Debussy as a young woman, Caruso said. Caruso started teaching out of her Elmhurst home once her own children started school. She said her neighbors asked her to teach their children. “All of my teaching has been word of mouth,” Caruso explained. “Over a period of years, I was teaching 50 students a week. And I’ve remained friends with so many parents all through the years.” Caruso estimates she’s taught between 300 and 400 children throughout her career. She attributes her suc-

FREDDIE MAC
Another Strong Year for Freddie Mac Multifamily Securities MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Jan 6, 2015) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) Multifamily further reduced taxpayer risk in 2014 by selling the overwhelming majority of credit risk on the mortgages it purchased to private capital investors through its Multifamily K-Deal securitization program. There were 21 Multifamily securities offerings in 2014 for a total transactions volume of $22.4 billion which, in addition to K-Deals, included a small volume of other securities, including the company’s Q- and M-Deals.
Grew the private investor base to more than 140 domestic and international investors. Typical investors are life insurance companies, banks, pension funds, money managers and hedge funds, some of whom assume first loss positions, reducing taxpayer risk. Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.
2014 Highlights: Continued to support affordable rental housing through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are affordable to households earning up to the area median income, and most of those loans are securitized. Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securitized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the program started in 2009, backing approximately $79 billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in unguaranteed certificates. Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of origination but that meet the company’s current underwriting standards. Q Certificates were introduced this fall. Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by $747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and taxable multifamily housing collateral.
“The K-Deal program has become the benchmark for Agency CMBS. 2014 was our second largest year for securities issuance and we now have just short of $100 billion in K Certificates outstanding. This year we also issued Q and M Certificates, adding variety to the investment opportunities for our customers. Part of the reason for our success is the exceptional credit performance of our collateral. At the end of the year, total K-Deal delinquencies amounted to 1 basis point.” “The multifamily market is healthy and we expect to issue approximately $25 billion in multifamily securities across 17 to 20 K-Deals next year. Also, in 2015 we expect to introduce a few new types of collateral to our securitizations, including 10-year floaters and small balance loans.”
Quotes from Mitchell Resnick, vice president of Freddie Mac Multifamily Capital Markets:
This announcement is not an offer to sell any Freddie Mac securities. Offers for any given security are made only through applicable offering circulars and related supplements, which incorporate Freddie Mac’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2013, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commis-

Freddie Mac’s press releases sometimes contain forward-looking statements. A description of factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from the expectations expressed in these and other forward-looking statements can be found in the company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2013, and its reports on Form 10-Q and Form 8-K, filed with the SEC and available on the Investor Relations page of the company’s Web site at www.FreddieMac.com/investors and the SEC’s Web site at www.sec.gov. 4 questions to ask before purchasing a new home uying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it is one of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account. Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now and in the years ahead. 1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is a reflection of your personality and can be an extension of your lifestyle. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curb appeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider architectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping. Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding color for a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementary color combinations developed by the color professionals at James Hardie: www. jameshardie.com/pdf/colorplus-color-combinations. pdf. 2. Is your home protected from environmental elements? With today’s ever-changing climate, extreme weather is a reality in all corners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind and wildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect your home. Consider your options careful-
ly. Vinyl siding can melt and wood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engineered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding that will stand up to weather conditions in your area.
3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Green building is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficient home can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills. By choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficient material, you’re consuming less energy and
reducing your environmental footprint. 4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting or buying a home made with low-maintenance building materials can lower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent them altogether. Wood siding
and trim requires frequent repainting or replacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durable and longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need for repairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty is a great way to maximize and protect your investment.

TOP 5 GAMES TO WATCH
Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com
Glenbard East’s Bryce Roberts passes the ball Dec. 11, 2014, during a home game against West Aurora. The Rams will be one of the teams playing when they host their own threegame When Sides Collide event Jan. 24.
Competition gets tough When Sides Collide By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The new year comes in the middle of the winter sports season and there are plenty of good high school sporting events on the schedule that are worth watching. Here’s a glimpse at some of the best games and events to watch at Glenbard East, Montini and Willowbrook athletics the rest of the winter season:
1. When Sides Collide When: 4:30 p.m. Jan. 24 Where: Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard What to watch: The Rams have hosted the When Sides Collide tripleheader for the past three years and this year’s slate of games is as strong as they’ve had so far. The opening game pits Riverside Brookfield, currently a one-loss team,
against Evanston, a program with a lot of history. Then the host Rams will take on Plainfield East and Illinois recruit Aaron Jordan. In the finale, West Aurora takes on Whitney Young in a meeting of two of the most storied programs in Illinois boys basketball.
2. 25th annual McDonald’s Shootout When: Jan. 19 Where: Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park What to watch: The McDonald’s Shootout is one of the dates to circle on the Chicago area girls basketball calendar every year. Willowbrook hosts dozens of top teams in a two-day event. Nine games will be Jan. 17 and nine more games will be Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Willowbrook kicks off the second day of
action against Providence at 8 a.m. and Montini will take on Chicago school Brooks at 5 p.m. Fremd vs. Benet and Trinity vs. Joliet Catholic follow the Montini game and are two of the showcase games for the event.
home meets the rest of the season. They still have conference matches at Metea Valley and Bartlett before heading to the conference tournament, where senior D’Andre Johnson will be the favorite to win at 285 pounds.
3. Upstate Eight Conference wrestling meet When: Jan. 23 and 24 Where: Geneva High
4. Montini girls basketball vs. New Trier When: 5:30 p.m. Jan. 10 Where: Fremd High School,
School, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva What to watch: This is Glenbard East’s first year in the Upstate Eight. The Rams don’t have a conference title in any sport in the UEC Valley yet, but wrestling might have a chance. East has had some strong tournament showings this year, including placing eighth out of 31 teams at Palatine’s Berman Winter Classic to finish 2014. The Rams don’t have any
1000 S. Quentin Road, Palatine What to watch: Montini has another elite girls basketball team, and the Broncos aren’t shy about playing top competition. On Saturday, they will travel to Fremd to take on New Trier as part of the two-day Chicagoland Invitational Showcase. The Trevians lost for the first time this season in the final of Dundee-Crown’s Charger Classic during the holiday season.
5. Willowbrook boys basketball at Addison Trail When: 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 Where: Addison Trail High School, 213 N. Lombard Road, Addison What to watch: The two District 88 schools are both off to improved starts this season. The Blazers are 10-3 with two tournament titles already and the Warriors are 6-6 with two tournament final appearances. Talented sophomore guard Alonzo Verge Jr. has led the resurgent Warriors. A year ago the Warriors won just two games, but this year’s team has far more talent across the board. Newcomers Kevin Miller and Billy Degnan and senior big men Kyle Rushing and Chris Roycroft have helped the team support Verge’s scoring ability. The Warriors won 56-51 in Villa Park when the two teams met Dec. 5, 2014. Another close game would be no surprise in the rematch.

work the ball around.” Rhashaun Epting finished with a team-high 13 points while Jordan Rowell checked into double figures with 10. Rowell added six rebounds and three steals. The Knights, who are 8-5 on the season, were coming off a 58-41 loss against St. Edward on Dec. 30, 2014, in the championship game of the IC/ Westmont Christmas Tournament. Previously, IC had defeated Evergreen Park (75-46), Latin (68-54) and Elmwood Park (63-48) as part of that same event to reach the championship. The squad is back in action tonight when it travels to take on Aurora Central Catholic.

ELMHURST – A young team with only three seniors on the roster, the IC Catholic boys basketball team was expected to go through some growing pains this winter. Now, after a strong start, the Knights find themselves in the midst of a tough stretch after dropping their second straight game, this time by a 76-45 margin to Glenbard South on Tuesday. “We have talented kids,” IC Catholic coach TJ Tyrrell said, “It’s just about getting them to play together. The main thing for us is to keep the kids positive and have them pick each other up.”
IC dug itself a big hole early against the Raiders, trailing 25-8 after the opening quarter. The home team couldn’t get closer than 13 points the rest of the way as it was stymied by the visitors’ full-court press. The Knights finished with 28 turnovers. “They [Glenbard South] shot the ball exceptionally well,” Tyrrell said. “We struggled with their pressure and we haven’t really struggled much with pressure this year. They forced a lot of turnovers and we dug ourselves a hole and couldn’t get out of it. “We were forcing way too much, rushing instead of pulling it out. We are trying to get the kids to understand how important it is to be patient and
