Villa Park passes $23M road referendum By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Villa Park officials’ effort to increase public engagement seems to have paid off as a $23 million referendum for road improvements was overwhelmingly passed Tuesday. “This is a victory for Villa Park,” Village President Deb Bullwinkel said. The referendum passed with 71-percent approval, according to preliminary election results. The proposed $23 million referendum will be funded through bonds and used to improve streets and perform major street reconstruction during a seven-year period. Nearly 20 miles of road will be improved through a combination of reconstruction and rehabilitation, as well as milling and resurfacing projects. “We don’t want to take a huge bite financially out of the residents’ pockets, and we also can’t have the whole town under construction at once,” Bullwinkel said of the seven-year plan. Villa Park has a shovel-ready project for Park Boulevard from Villa Avenue to Riverside Drive that Bullwinkel said the village hopes to complete in 2015, along with starting the grind, overlay and resurfacing of identified streets throughout the city. “The residents felt it was finally time to get this done,”

She said the village expects the property tax increase to cost about $146 annually for a home valued at $200,000. “The public engagement was critical to the success of this referendum,” Bullwinkel said. Following her election as village president, Bullwinkel wanted to get to work edu-
cating residents about the proposed referendum, which has failed twice in the past. She said the village, along with residents, has been working for 16 months to answer questions about the referendum. They’ve mailed fliers, held several town hall meetings and conducted a voter survey. “I want to thank the resi-
dents who came out and voted, whether they voted for or against it,” Bullwinkel said. She said the village will most likely use the same approach to engage residents on other issues as they come up. “Now we’ve got to get to work and prove it to the residents that we mean business,” Bullwinkel said.
Trial gets postponed for man who allegedly killed ex By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com A new January trial date has been set for Villa Park resident Todd Mandoline, whose murder trial was expected to begin this week. Mandoline, 25, is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Paula Morgan, Todd by starting a Mandoline fire that spread to her Lombard home in 2012. The trial was scheduled to begin Monday, but on that day, Mandoline’s defense team filed a motion that

The motion to quash Mandoline’s arrest states his arrest was illegal because law enforcement officials did not have the authority or probable cause to arrest him based on the physical evidence discovered, the statements made by Mandoline after his arrest and
the identification of Mandoline by witnesses after he was arrested, Darrah said. The motion will be argued Nov. 21, he said. A tentative trial start date is scheduled Jan. 12, 2015. Mandoline faces four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated arson, one count of arson and one count of criminal damage to property. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in August 2013. Prosecutors said Mandoline was angry after being escorted out of a birthday party at Morgan’s home July 21, 2012. He allegedly returned later that night, stuck a piece of
paper in the fuel tank of Morgan’s car and lit it on fire. Flames engulfed the car, and the fire spread to the home where Morgan and her friend, Jason Cassidy, were trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Morgan’s young son was able to escape the home. Morgan later died from smoke inhalation, but Cassidy recovered from his injuries. If Mandoline is convicted, he could face a sentence of between 20 and 60 years for the first-degree murder charges. If he’s convicted of aggravated arson along with first-degree murder, the prison sentence could be for natural life.

The Community Memorial Site for Bill Mueller now sits behind the Lombard Historical Society’s Victorian Cottage at 23 W. Maple St. The $25,000 gazebo project is the result of a partnership between the village, Lombard Historical Society and Mueller family. A fundraiser was started by the family in 2012 to help pay for the memorial. So far, $12,000 has been raised, according to the memorial’s website at muellermemorial.org.

Incumbent Conroy takes District 46 by close margin By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com Incumbent Democrat Deb Conroy will remain in Springfield for an additional two years after winning a close race against Republican challenger Heidi Holan for Illinois’ 46th state representative district in Tuesday’s general Deb Conroy election. “I’m thrilled,” Conroy said Tuesday. “I believe that I definitely have the best interest of the majority of my district at heart.” Conroy, who is currently serving her first term in the
General Assembly, received about 52 percent of the vote, according to preliminary election results, while Holan received 48 percent. A Villa Park resident, Conroy said Tuesday she prides herself in acting independently as a legislator and, when campaigning, she cited her participation in bipartisan efforts to streamline DuPage County government bodies and services as ranking high among her accomplishments in office. She said Tuesday her future priorities in representing the district will include continuing to advocate for government consolidation and fighting Senate Bill 16, which, if passed, would redistribute
state education funds to school districts based on need, causing all DuPage County districts except one to lose money. “Poverty’s not a zip code anymore,” she said. “We have poverty here, too.” Holan, a homemaker from Glen Ellyn, campaigned on a platform that was anti-tax and pro pension and Medicaid reform. “I want to thank those who supported me,” she said Tuesday. Holan said she wished Conroy well, was excited about the Rauner win and looks forward to helping her community in other ways. “It’s always been in my nature to serve,” she said.
Breen wins 48th District election against Tomlinson By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com Republican Peter Breen has been elected as the 48th District General Assembly representative after winning more than 90 percent of the vote Tuesday. Breen of Lombard finished with 2 6 , 9 4 4 v o t e s Peter Breen out of the 29,645 votes cast, according to preliminary election results, giving him 91 percent of the vote. Breen was the only candidate listed on the ballot, but he faced write-in challenger Marian Tomlinson of Glen Ellyn. DuPage County Election
Commission representative Bob Saar said the vote totals for write-in candidates won’t be available until the end of the week. Breen beat incumbent Sandra Pihos in the March primary with 56 percent of the vote. He said he had been anticipating Tuesday since March, but it was great to finally experience it. “I’m really honored by the overwhelming support of the people in my district,” he said. “Our main focus was communicating our message to the voters and putting forward a positive, reform-minded agenda.” Breen said his priorities will be allowing Illinois’

Glowiak’s economic strategy involved investing in state infrastructure, as well as expanding the tax base by creating a business-friendly environment, decreasing the income tax rate and cutting wasteful spending, according to her responses to a Suburban Life Media candidate questionnaire. She also supported raising the minimum wage over several years. She championed the value of education and opposed Senate Bill 16, which would take millions in state funding from public schools in District 24. Glowiak also wanted to get municipalities and DuPage County more resources to combat flooding in the area, she said in the questionnaire. Glowiak could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. Nybo said he’s excited to get to work to bring more jobs to DuPage County and continue working for DuPage County voters. “I’m glad that they appreciate the truth and sincere government,” Nybo said.

Republican Chris Nybo of Elmhurst will remain the District 24 state senator after claiming victory over Democrat Suzy Glowiak of Western Springs. “I think the biggest thing that is coming out of our race is DuPage County voters are rejecting the Cullerton cousins,” Nybo said after declaring victory Tuesday night, referring to Democratic state Sens. Tom and John Cullerton, whom he describes as “Chicago-style” politicians. The Cullertons campaigned with Glowiak, who lost to Nybo with 40 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results. Nybo was appointed to represent the state Senate’s 24th District by his predecessor Kirk Dilliard, who left the position in August to take a job as chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority. While a District 41 state representative, Nybo worked successfully to pass laws banning billboards paid for by taxpayers and expanding the availability of food allergy medicine in schools. As a representative, Nybo supported the proposal that eventually became Senate Bill 1, aimed at addressing the state’s pension crisis. While the bill is currently under review by the Illinois Supreme Court, Nybo maintains whatever the ruling, the pension crisis is solvable. “I think Bruce Rauner is just what this state needs,” Nybo said. Job creation and preventing tax increases were at the forefront of Nybo’s economic campaign message. “We’ve got to kill that income tax increase,” Nybo said. Glowiak is currently in her second term as a village trustee in Western Springs, where she

Breen also said he looks forward to working with legislators on Senate Bill 16, the controversial legislation that would change the formula for state education funding. Tomlinson petitioned to
be added to the ballot for the 48th District after the March primary, but was removed in July on a technicality. She later rejoined the race as an official write-in candidate. “My intention was that we would give the voters a choice,” she said. “We did give them a choice and I hope it works out.” Tomlinson said she knew her candidacy would be an uphill battle. “A write-in candidate is a long-shot. And I knew that going into it,” she said. Tomlinson said she has no plans to run again, but that she wouldn’t rule it out.

CORRECTING UNEVEN VISION MAY REDUCE FALLS Among the many eye conditions that older adults should be aware of is “anisometropia,” which involves eyes that have significantly different refractive power. In fact, one eye may be nearsighted (myopic) while the other is farsighted (hyperopic), or one eye may be significantly stronger than the other. It is also possible that anisometropic individuals may have one eye with a different astigmatism (imperfect curvature of the eye), which leads to blurred vision. These discrepancies make it difficult to produce a single sharp image needed for perceiving depth. As a result, footing becomes less sure. One study involving older adults shows that the prevalence of anisometropia increases after age 65. Regular eye exams can help diagnose the condition and prevent falls.

School District 45 middle-schoolers explore new topics Education continues to change not only at the elementary level in School District 45, but at the middle-school level as well. Peeking into the classrooms of Jackson and Jefferson middle schools, you may find something really different. As you might guess, technology will continue to have its influence, and a whole new world will be discovered. At both middle schools, DisCOMMUNITY trict 45 is implementing a new VOICE course titled Explorations. Anthony J. Explorations is a nine-week Palmisano course in the rotation of music, art and industrial technology. It is a career exploration course exploring many of the career options in science, including family and consumer science. This course is a perfect complement to our Industrial Technology course as the technology course focuses on the engineering component of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) while Explorations focuses primarily on science. Both courses incorporate math and technology, but Explorations requires students to collaborate in pairs using computer-based modules, guiding their experience through the global skills of tomorrow. The Industrial Technology class continues to focus on a process called Engineering by Design. The students work through a problem in a hands-on, systemic approach by analyzing the problem and developing a solution. For example, students are asked to design a model bridge that can withstand various degrees of pressure and weight. The Explorations course replaces the traditional Home Economics course in a hybrid fashion, including the traditional skills of cooking and nutrition with the teacher, as well as independent learning on the computer. Topics may include introduction to nutrition and food preparation and basic knowledge of personal fitness for sixth-graders, exploring the pros and cons of being a green consumer and learning the basics of financing and executing an addition onto the home for seventh-graders, and consumer education and early child development for eighth-graders. We are excited about the opportunities provided to students as we are always teaching today for tomorrow”= in District 45. Cronin takes second term as County Board chairman The DuPage County Board will be led by a familiar face for the next four years after Chairman Dan Cronin won his second term in a landslide victory in Tuesday’s general election. Cronin faced challenger and fellow Elmhurst resident Robert Dan Cronin Peickert, whom is the chairman of the DuPage County Democratic Party. The incumbent Republican received 65 percent of the vote compared to Peickert’s 35 percent, according to preliminary election results. “I feel good about it,” Cronin said early Tuesday before the results were in. “I take nothing for granted and take every opponent seriously, but at this stage, I’m optimistic.”

Zaruba wins re-election bid SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Incumbent DuPage County sheriff candidate John Zaruba won his re-election bid Tuesday night after claiming 62 percent of the vote. Zaruba, a Republican who has served as sheriff since 1997, had 158,983 votes cast in his name, according to preliminary election results. His challenger, Democrat Mike Quiroz, received 95,639 votes. DuPage County has 587,216 registered voters. Zaruba and Quiroz were unopposed in their respective March primary elections. Neither candidate could be reached for comment after the election. In a pre-election questionnaire, Zaruba said he felt he was the best candidate for
sheriff because he has integrity, perseverance, pride, loyalty and a sense of caring. “I believe that I possess John Zaruba these traits and have never lost sight or wavered from my position, my oath or my purpose,” he said. He said the biggest issue facing the sheriff’s office is the heroin and prescription drug crisis, which is resulting in an increase in overdose deaths. Zaruba said education, prevention, treatment and law enforcement are all necessary to win that fight. In the pre-election questionnaire, Quiroz said he hoped to make changes to the
structure of the office. Currently, the correction division and court deputies are paid the same wages as the patrol deputies and detectives, which Quiroz said is “rare” in other offices. Quiroz said he would separate the correction and court security divisions and create a different pay scale to save costs. The savings would be used to hire new deputies, he said, and existing deputies would not be affected. This, coupled with a reduction in overtime, would save $1.5 million to $2 million per year, he said. “The sheriff’s office, managed correctly, could be an asset to all citizens and law enforcement agencies in the county,” he said.
Hinds gets win in DuPage County Clerk race By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a DuPage County Clerk race filled with allegations, the quieter candidate was the one that came out on top. Chief Deputy Clerk and Republican Paul Hinds appeared Tuesday night to have cruised Paul Hinds to a comfortable win against Democrat Jean Kaczmarek, 60 percent to 40 percent. “I think we just came up with a campaign plan that started a yearandahalfagowithpetitions going out,” Hinds said. “We just did the work. It’s always nice when a campaign plan goes according to schedule.” Hinds has worked in the County Clerk’s office for more than 18 years and is currently the chief deputy to current County Clerk Gary King. The Villa Park resident ran largely based on that experience and a hope to continue to streamline and modernize the county records. He said he believed his experience and the Clerk’s Office’s good reputation were driving factors to the big win. “The county clerk’s job is an

The Democrat filed a complaint with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office on Sept. 30 claiming Hinds had inappropriately used county resources for his campaign, including using county employees to circulate and certi-
fy his campaign petitions. Kaczmarek was not immediately available for comment Tuesday. Hinds said he was disappointed the race skewed negative from his opponent, saying she “threw out a lot of allegations and never addressed what the county clerk does.” Hinds will be sworn in Dec. 1 and serve a four-year-term. He said one of his first priorities on the job will be to digitize more of the Clerk’s Office’s paperwork and put it online. Filling the shoes of his mentor and campaign manager King will be a challenge he is looking forward to and trained to accomplish, he said, and thanked the voters for the confidence in him. “Gary’s been clerk since 1986, and this will be the first time we’ve had a change in the Clerk’s Office since then,” he said. “But I’m anxious and ready to go.”

16 County voter turnout dips below 50 percent County Board member By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com About 47 percent of registered voters in DuPage County turned out for Tuesday’s election, according to the DuPage County Election Commission. With all precincts reporting, 269,750 out of 587,216 voters participated in the election. The number will increase by about 10,000 when absentee ballots are added, according to Executive Director Robert Saar. Saar said 47 percent falls below the average range from the past three governors’ races,
which he said was between 50.5 and 55 percent. A total of 288,680 out of the 558,929 registered voters participated in the 2010 election, a 51.5 percent turnout. “Voters just aren’t turning out like they used to,” he said. “I know that we have more registered voters, but this is a sad trend.” In March’s primary elections, a record-low 18.9 percent of registered voters cast votes. Saar said the number of registered voters has increased significantly in the past two decades – up to 85 percent of the eligible population as opposed to 65 percent in the early 90s.
He said when also taking into account the people not registered to vote, about 36 percent of the voting population participated in the election, which he finds “sad” considering everything at stake for the state. “Think of all the things that have been done to encourage voter turnout, and it goes down,” he said. Saar said he thinks the state needs to take a serious look at better ways of encouraging voter turnout. He said other states have had more success with tactics such as permanent vote by mail and precinct consolidation.

Eckhoff takes District 4 By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DuPage County Board member Grant Eckhoff had little trouble holding on to his seat representing District 4 on election night, when he beat out Democrat Jeremy Custer by more than an estimated 10,700 votes. Eckhoff took Grant Eckhoff more than 62 percent of the vote, according to preliminary election results, extending his stay on the board, which began in 2002. “Voters have spoken – and the thing about democracy is, at the end of the day, you can have the best campaign in the world, but they have the final word,” Custer said Tuesday. “Grant has had a pretty long career that has a lot of accomplishments and voters definitely didn’t think this was a time to make a change, and I respect that.” Eckhoff has been a fixture in local politics since his time on the Wheaton City Council from 1989 to 2002. He also was director of the Downtown Wheaton Association from 1996 to 2002 and county board liason to the Choose DuPage Board of Directors from 2009 to 2013 and to the DuPage County Historical Museum Board of Directors from 2004 to 2010, according to his website. Most recently, he has led the charge in much of the county’s heroin prevention

Eckhoff defeated chal lengers Paula McGowen and Ronald Almiron in the Republican primary election in March. He did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday night. Though his political resume is not as long, Custer has a strong government background as well. He is the chief of staff for state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, and beat out former Republican Moon Khan of Lombard in the primary, running on a platform of ethics reform, constituent outreach and economic development. The Glendale Heights resident said before the election he would bring a fresh energy to the board compared to longtime public official Eckhoff. He said he hoped the incumbent would take some of the issues they discussed in the campaign and turn them into board policies in the future. D-87 to request property tax increase from DuPage County GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 introduced its proposed tax levy for 2014 at its Oct. 27 Board of Education meeting. Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Chris McClain said the district will request 1.9 percent more in property taxes from DuPage County next year – an additional $2,187,044. McClain said 1.4 percent of the hike will be because of an increase in the Consumer Price Index, which he said is similar to a spike in standard of living. The remaining 0.4 percent is for new construction. The district calculated the number with a formula that
involves last year’s property tax dollars received, the estimated amount of property tax dollars the county will receive this year and other factors. The district also will submit a property tax request to the county totaling 4.9 percent. McClain said that number is calculated to account for higher estimates for construction costs or if additional dollars need to be placed in other funds. He said the district does not expect to get those funds, but the county only can allocate as much as the district requests. A public hearing will be conducted at the board’s Nov. 11 meeting. The measure is expected to be approved Nov. 24 and sent on to the county in December.

Wild Monk elevates gastropub offerings LA GRANGE – When eating out, it is a rare find that strikes the perfect balance between upscale cuisine and casual comfort, but downtown La Grange gastropub Wild Monk does just that. I recently ventured to the restaurant and bar for dinner on a Friday evening. The dining room, which remained full throughout the night, is minimalist, yet cozy, with a wood floor and booths, metal stools and exposed-bulb light fixtures. Televisions lined the walls, playing baseball and basketball, so no one was missing the game. We took our time placing our drink orders, perusing the expansive menu, which includes over 30 draft beers and even more bottled brews, as well as an array of signature cocktails and select wines, whiskeys, bourbons and Scotches. Among the featured breweries are west suburban favorites BuckleDown Brewing of Lyons, Pollyanna Brewing Co. of Lemont, and Two Brothers Brewing Co. of Warrenville. I opted for a seasonal beer with the Ten Ninety Brewing Co.’s De Ogen pumpkin ale, which was robust, spicy and aromatic. My companion went with BuckleDown’s Amarillo Clencher, which he found to be appealingly hoppy, citrusy and sweet. We began the meal by sharing one of several available small plates. Wild Monk offers a range of interesting options, including several types of sliders. But from the moment my companion spotted them on the menu, it had to be Brussels sprouts. Now, Brussels sprouts long have been a source of contention for the two of us – he loves them, I hate them. But at Wild Monk, we shared a rare moment of consensus on the controversial veggie. They were delicious. Tossed in bacon jam, lemon and sea salt, they were savory, sweet and just sprouty enough. To continue the meal, I by-

It was creamy and hearty – the kind of sandwich you could happily eat as a latenight snack or for breakfast the next morning. A side of Cajun fries added a seasoned
kick to the plate. For his entree, my dining companion selected the fried chicken tacos with spicy slaw, micro cilantro and chipotle aioli, which he described as light, moist and flavorful. As his side order, the plantain chips were fresh and hot, with a satisfying crunch. Before we departed, he tried one more enticing draft beer – Pollyanna’s Dr. Pan-
gloss, which somehow pulls off the delightfully bizarre combination of being both hoppy and malty. If you are a beer snob, Wild Monk will no doubt rise to your standards. If you aren’t a beer snob, fear not – Wild Monk may know beer, but it also knows how to create an environment everyone can enjoy.

For the Wildcats, it was just two years ago that the one-time doormat of the Big Ten put together a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten, 10-3 overall, and won its first bowl game in 64 years and just the second in its history. Until Jan. 1, 2013, Northwestern’s only victory in a bowl game was in the 1949 Rose Bowl, a defeat of California. Sixty-four years later to the day, the Wildcats knocked off Mississippi State 34-0 in the Gator Bowl. Yes, the same Mississippi State that was ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in its history at 8-0 as I pen this column. Ah, but the winds of change can blow swiftly and cruelly as they have on these two programs in recent seasons. Since Hoke’s first year at Michigan, his Wolverines have gone just 19-16 in the past two-plus seasons and a once unthinkable 11-10 in the Big Ten. Actually, things were

worse than that as Michigan prepared to visit Northwestern. Michigan had dropped eight of its past 12 Big Ten games, a streak matched only once in the past six decades by their 4-8 Big Ten record under Rodriguez in his final two seasons. Things have gotten so bad in Ann Arbor that Athletic Director David Brandon was forced to resign just 10 days before the Northwestern game, and Hoke is considered a real long shot to return for another season. While the expectations for the Northwestern football program are nowhere near those of Michigan, that Gator Bowl victory was supposed to signal a new era for the Wildcats, the first of many bowl victories to come and the possibility of someday even playing in a Big
Ten title game. Northwestern followed its 2012 breakout campaign with a 5-7 record in 2013, which included a 1-7 record in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are 3-5 this season, including 2-3 in the Big Ten following a 2-0 start to the campaign that included a 20-14 upset over 17th-ranked Wisconsin. While Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s job is in nowhere near the jeopardy of Hoke’s – the advantage I guess of Northwestern football’s less lofty expectations – to say his star has fallen a bit is an understatement. Just a season ago, Fitzgerald was one of the hottest names in college football coaching circles, rumored for the Texas job and almost every other major program gig that opened up. Ironically, Fitzgerald was heavily rumored for the Michigan job before both the Rodriguez and Hoke hirings. He was reportedly within a whisker of taking the Michigan job before Hoke was hired, when Northwestern stepped up with one of those “lifetime” coaching contracts every college coach covets. Not coincidentally, I am a Michigan alumnus, and our senior Bears beat reporter, Kevin Fishbain, studied at
Northwestern. Neither of us are very happy these days, but we are forever loyal. And therein lies the beauty of both the college and high school games, with one of the very few football assets the NFL cannot match. These two Big Ten programs will be back. There is glory in their futures. How soon I cannot say, but it will happen, and the alumni will always be there when it does. They are a significant part of their alumni’s lives, as are the teams of the high schools we attended and played on. Your favorite NFL team is an attachment, at times inseparable or so it seems, but at the end of the day, they are a choice. The schools you gave four or more years of your lives to, they and their teams are a part of who you are, the highs are that much higher and the lows that much more depressing. Both Northwestern and Michigan alumni deserve better than what they’ve been given lately. Hopefully, the outcome of Saturday’s game is the beginning of something really good for one side or the other.

With the Cubs’ hiring of Joe Maddon dominating the sports pages, Bears-Packers week in the NFL and the IHSA state football championships moving into the second round, the biggest story in college football in Chicago was the once-mighty Michigan Wolverines visiting the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday. Just a couple of seasons ago, this matchup would have signaled a unique opportunity for the up-and-coming Wildcats to make a statement against one of the most powerful college football programs in the country. But on Saturday, it was a clash between two programs heading in the same direction, most definitely the wrong direction. Everyone who loves the game knows about Michigan football, the winningest program in the history of college football. As recently as three seasons ago, the Wolverines were 6-2 in the Big Ten, 11 -2 overall and playing in a BCS bowl game under first-year Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, a “Michigan man” tabbed to come in and clean up the disappointment of the three-year reign of Rich Rodriguez, “the outsider” and controversial

The Rams won a regional for the first time since 2008 before running into a buzz saw in the form of York junior outside hitter Alex Preuss in a sectional semifinal Tuesday. Preuss had 19 kills to lead the Dukes to a 25-20, 25-16 win at De La Salle. East finished the season with a 25-13 record and did so without any true standout players. The balanced team effort resulted in a memorable season for the program.

“I’ve never been on a team that jells this well and that gets along so well on and off the court,” Bell said. “That just made it a great atmosphere to play in. Bell had good reason to be proud as this season was the best in recent memory for East. “We had an absolutely fantastic season,” coach Marci Maier said. “One of the best we’ve had. It ties the best record we’ve had at East in 13 years. “This is probably one of the best teams up and down our lineup. They played with heart and hustle. They played with each other and for each other.” The Rams pulled out a tight win the regional final against St. Ignatius, a squad that beat the Rams in the first tournament of the season Aug. 30. Junior Allison Farrell had 13 kills and senior Sarah Murphy
had 10 in the Rams’ 24-26, 26-24, 26-24 victory. Murphy was one of five seniors on the varsity team, along with Bell, Allison Achenbaugh, Viky Bozenovaite and Chelsey Losacco and one of three captains, along with Bell and junior Jessie Spontak. Murphy said being a part of a successful team after suffering through losing seasons made it even more special. “There’s not one thing I regret about this season,” Murphy said. “It means more than I think any of us can put into words. Being able to be a part of something this special, that doesn’t come around often. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Spontak and Farrell will be among the key players returning next year. Elin Ream, Sammie Sarles and Emily Hamaker also were regulars as juniors. Sophomore setters Mackenzie Bell and Meghan Wozniak also were on the roster, giving the Rams a number of experienced players next season. “The things that I’ve learned this year from the seniors and from the coaching staff and everybody, it really made me grow as a person and as a player.” Spontak said. “Everything was fantastic. It couldn’t have been better for me and I am just so happy to be a part of this group.”

LOMBARD – The Montini-Joliet Catholic football rivalry is becoming an annual tradition, and it’s time for the latest installment. The Broncos are set to travel to Joliet Saturday for the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. It will be the fourth year in a row Montini has faced the Hilltoppers in the postseason. Montini won all three previous meetings, including last year’s 22-21 quarterfinal in Lombard, and has four straight playoff wins against JCA. The anticipation was building throughout the week of practice for the Broncos. “We’re just really excited,” senior wide receiver Leon Thornton III said. “Us seniors have been playing them for the past four years. We’ve been successful so far, but it’s a new year and a new team on both sides of the ball. We’re ready right now.” Montini had little trouble getting by DuSable in the first round. The Broncos won 56-8 after taking a 42-0 lead into halftime. The difficulty will ramp up
