VILLA PARK – February came in with a bang this weekend, bringing with it about 19 inches of snow. While Villa Park Public Works crews battled the snow, local schools, including those in school districts 45 and 88, closed for a snow day Monday. Snow began falling Saturday evening and continued through late Sunday night. Ricky Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chicago, said the snowfall totals for DuPage County surpassed 1 foot. “Some of the high amounts we’re seeing over the two days is 15 to 19 inches,” he said. Villa Park Public Works crews began clearing village streets Saturday night. They used 51 tons of rock salt during the weekend, according to the Villa Park website. Public Works also used a beet product on an experimental basis with the rock salt. Because of the snow, garbage pickup was delayed by a day this week. Castro said the high amount of snow is a result of an “unseasonably high amount of moisture” being carried from the tropics of the Pacific Ocean. That, combined with the fact the system was slow moving and the weather

According to the National Weather Service, Chicago O’Hare International Airport had 19.3 inches of snow, which set the record for the snowiest day in February. That ranks as the fifth-larg-
est snow storm in Chicago’s history. Castro said the whole system has passed, and there are no signs of additional significant snowfall. “It doesn’t look like anything significant in the next seven to 10 days, so far,” he said Monday.

or a three-year period. The proposal they chose was for a cost of about $233,000 as opposed to $236,000 in two years or $238,000 in three years. Goldsmith said the board opted for the more cost-effective proposal. During the next two years, Goldsmith said they will be planting new trees to replace the ash trees. He said the goal is to plant one new tree for every tree that is taken down. The village plans to put in several different varieties of trees. Residents will be able to view pictures of the trees on the website and select the ones they would like to see on the parkways. Since the village’s program started in 2010, the ash trees have been removed by both contractors and village employees.

LOMBARD – Residents of the village of Lombard will start to see more ash trees coming down throughout the village on both Lombard Park District and village property. This week, Homer Tree Service, a contractor hired by the Park District, began removing 220 trees at Madison Meadow Park because of the emerald ash borer. The cost to remove those trees is about $44,000, and it is part of the Park District budget. The emerald ash borer is a green, invasive beetle native to Asia and Eastern Russia that destroys ash trees. Paul Friederichs, executive director of the Lombard Park District, said the trees will be replaced with a variety of na-
tive Illinois trees. There were about 1,100 ash trees infected with the emerald ash borer, and the Park District aims to diversify the type of trees in the various parks in order to decrease the impact of insects or disease in the future, Friederichs said. “Most of the ash trees in the park system are infected,” he said. The district will need to remove 300 additional trees after the 220 they are starting to remove. Lombard trustees voted at their last Village Board meeting to remove 1,100 ash trees located on various village parkways in a one-year time period. Originally, there were about 2,700 ash trees in the village when the tree removal program first started in 2010. “There will be some period

LOMBARD – All Lombard Village Board of Trustees seats up for election in April will be uncontested, after two candidates dropped out of their respective races. District 4 candidate Alan Bennett and District 5 candidate Lori Solyom withdrew their candidacies, leaving Bill Johnston and Robyn M. Pike as the sole candidates for District 4 and District 5, respectively. Incumbent trustee Michael A. Fugiel also will be running unopposed in District 2. Solyom announced her decision
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced Monday in a news release he will introduce legislation aimed at banning excessive severance packages at public institutions. Breen said the legislation will be called the Breuder Rule, after the College of DuPage Board of Trustees approved a $762,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder, who will receive the money when he retires in March 2016. After retiring, Breuder also will be the namesake of the Homeland Security Education Center. Breen said Breuder deserves for legislation to be named after him instead of a building. “Too many so-called public servants are getting rich at the expense of the taxpayers, and the Breuder Rule will prevent this going forward,” Breen said in the release. Breen’s legislation also would forbid community college boards from raising property taxes, tuition or fees after an excessive severance payout, which he defined as anything greater than one year’s salary and benefits.

Bennett previously served as a trustee in Elmwood Park for 37 years before moving to Lombard to spend more time with his grandchildren, according to an Elmwood Park news release. He resigned from that position in August 2012. Former Lombard trustee Peter Breen stepped down from the Village Board’s District 4 seat Dec. 31, 2014, to begin his term as a state representative. Breen was sworn into office as a village trustee in May 2011. In November, he was elected as state representative for Illinois’ 48th District. Current District 5 trustee Laura Fitzpatrick did not file for reelection for her seat.

Matt Kissane brings comedic touch to Internet By RENEE TOMELL Pay attention and you’re likely to catch multi-tasking comedian Matt Kissane of Villa Park pop up in radio bits, TV ads and on his long-running podcast “Live From Chicago,” and that’s just for starters. The performer, who grew up in Lombard, attended Montini Catholic High School and studied radio in college, chatted from his studio about his latest projects, including his podcast’s focus on “Saturday Night Live” alumni in honor of the show’s 40th anniversary celebration this month. Tomell: Your affection for ‘Saturday Night Live’ is reflected in your recent podcasts. Kissane: I just interviewed the great George Wendt from ‘Cheers.’ I’ve been a huge fan of his for years. I do an impersonation of him as Chicago Bears super fan [Da Bears]. I interviewed Gary Kroeger, an ‘SNL’ guy from the ‘80s. I interned back at NBC for Tom Brokaw in 1985. Gary was still working at ‘Saturday Night Live.’ I used to see him when I was a 19-yearold college kid in New Jersey.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren find support and success More than 2.5 million grandparents in America are raising their grandchildren, and almost 100,000 throughout Illinois do so, according to AARP. For many grandparents, the challenges they face in being caregivers can be numerous and complex. To help them cope with those challenges and succeed, Metropolitan Family Services DuPage Center COMMUNITY offers Grandparents Raising VOICE Grandchildren. Ann Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a dropPinkney in support group from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays at Metropolitan’s DuPage Center, 222 E. Willow Ave. in Wheaton. The group, which has been helping families for more than 20 years, provides emotional support for grandparents as well as links to resources such as counseling and other services. There is no cost, and attendees can come as often as they like. Childcare is offered for grandchildren ages 3 to 13. The group starts with a half-hour pizza party for the grandparents and grandchildren, followed by the support group for the grandparents. Grandparents gain many benefits by participating, starting by learning they are not alone. “The grandparents get to connect with others who are experiencing what they are experiencing – their phase of life puts them out of touch of most of their peers,” said Kelly Reid, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren facilitator. Getting to share with and learn from peers helps grandparents deal with special challenges they encounter, such as the fact that many of their grandchildren have experienced emotional or physical abuse at the hands of their parents, because of parents’ struggles with mental illness, drug addiction or alcoholism. Grandparents also have their own matters to deal with, such as health issues or limited finances, as many are on fixed incomes. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF VISION LOSS? Most people would probably name glaucoma and cataracts as the most common causes of vision impairment. However, new research shows that a less familiar eye disease is most responsible for vision loss and has been so for the past two decades. I read about Mindy’s, that antique store that used to be on Vallette Street, and wanted to mention the exorbitant rents. Remember the TCBY that was off Vallette on York Road. It was there for many, many years. We had fun memories of the going there, going across the street with the small kids by the fountain. They had to close down. I remember Scott, being one of the owners, and he said because of the high fees and rents he just had to close. How many years was that place closed, nothing happening, just an empty building for many years. And now, lo and behold, we have another dental office. Just what we need another one in Elmhurst.

KEITH A. FAILON Born: Nov. 17, 1937; in Kewanee, IL Died: Feb. 1, 2015; in Rock Island, IL Keith Albert Failon, died peacefully at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Island IL on February 1, 2015, at the age of 77. Mr. Failon is survived by two children, Brian Failon (Kim) of Richmond VA and Kim Phelan (Bill) of Lombard IL; six grandchildren, one in New York City (Kathryn Failon), two in Richmond (Caroline and Nicholas Failon), and three in Lombard (Miles and Spencer Fogle, and Olivia Zilinski); sister, Joyce Nolan, of Milan IL; and brother, Roger Failon, of Rock Island. Mr. Failon was born on November 17, 1937, in Kewanee IL to Jesse and Esther Failon. He graduated from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign with a Master's degree in Mathematics. He married Nancy Coffman, originally of Des Plaines, in 1960. A lifelong resident of Illinois, he lived in Elmhurst during his best years, while he was a tenured faculty member, in the Mathematics Department, at Elmhurst College. His good sense for numbers, coupled with business acumen and salesmanship, drew him into real estate, first residential sales, then commercial sales and property management. He particularly enjoyed syndicating investment properties, especially apartment buildings, where he often would do the maintenance himself. He could have been the TV host for “Flip this Apartment Building.” His passion for real estate was only surpassed by his love for his Chicago Cubbies. He spent many an afternoon in the Friendly Confines, as well as several Spring Trainings in Arizona. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on February 28th at Edgewood Baptist Church, 2704 38th St, Rock Island, with a reception to follow. Pastor Dan Cullett will officiate the ceremony. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Aunt Joyce (Nolan), for her loving and compassionate care of our father, her brother, in his later years.

Richard L. "Rick" Lang, a resident of Winfield, Illinois, died Sunday, February 1, 2015, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. He was 64 years old. Rick was born in Chicago, January 25, 1951. He attended Norwood Park Elementary and William Taft High School in Chicago where he developed his life-long love of local sports, particularly the Chicago Blackhawks. An avid runner, he was a member of the track team in both high school and college, and was even inducted into the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers Hall of Fame. After graduating with a degree in mathematics, Rick earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Loyola University School of Dentistry, later receiving additional degrees including a Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Oral Biology, also from Loyola. For more than 30 years, Rick managed his own Orthodontics practice in Elmhurst, Illinois, where he treated hundreds of children and young adults. Throughout his career, Rick held a number of distinguished certifications in his field: Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontics; Diplomate, American Board of Orofacial Pain; and Fellow, World Federation of Orthodontics. He was also a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, American Equilibration Society, and served as an Associate Professor of Orthodontics and Anatomy at the Loyola University School of Dentistry for many years. Rick was lifetime member of Delta Sigma Delta, and Deputy of the Beta Chapter. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sandra; his two daughters, Jessica and Shannon; his sister, Donna (Ed) Motzny; his nephew, Dr. Sean (Cindy) Motzny; and his niece, Kathleen (Derek) Hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Lillian Lang, and his nephew, Trevor Motzny. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, Illinois. • RAUNER Continued from page 7 dues as a condition of employment — Rauner dubbed the localized right-to-work areas “employee empowerment zones.” “Employee empowerment zones will increase jobs for residents, increase economic activity for local businesses and generate more tax dollars for local gsovernments. It’s a win-win-win proposal,” Rauner said. Rauner also seeks to limit organized labor’s influence by extending the existing ban on political contributions for businesses with state contracts to all organization with a collective bargaining agreement with state government, and organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds. In exchange for the business reforms, Rauner said he supports a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased in over seven years. While Rauner in his speech did not address the state’s $111 billion unfunded pension liability — a 2013 reform bill is awaiting an Illinois Supreme Court ruling regarding its constitutionality — his priorities list included a proposal to move state employees into a new tier of benefits or into 401(k)s while protecting the pension benefits they have accumulated to date. Another proposal seeks to give state government employees merit-based raises. A number of Rauner’s proposals are aimed at the local level, such as lowering the property tax burden on Illinois homeowners. Besides the right-to-work and prevailing wage reforms that he said will decrease local government’s costs, he wants a two-year freeze on property taxes and an increased emphasis on consolidating local units of government — Illinois at almost 7,000 has far more than any other state. Lawmakers will meet again in two weeks when Rauner delivers his proposed 2016 budget, which will give a more complete picture as to how he plans to pay for initiatives such as increased funding for K-12 education, and at the same time what needs to be cut. Besides a multi-bil-
lion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year beginning July 1. A much-criticized 2011 increase in the state income tax was allowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised. While Rauner said he wants to keep income taxes “low and competitive with other states” and keep the state’s flat tax over a progressive one based on income, he wants to extend the state sales tax to include a number of services. He likely will find pushback from members of his own Republican caucus, some of whom oppose any attempt to find more revenue over cutting spending.
Local lawmakers react Rauner’s speech earned high praise from local Republican legislators and even received positive words from the other side of the aisle. Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said she’s encouraged by Rauner’s early signs of bipartisan leadership. “It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on longterm solutions to the state’s problems,” she said. State Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, was part of the committee of lawmakers who escorted Rauner into the House of Representatives chambers to present his address. Nybo said he is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work with Rauner and his fellow lawmakers to improve Illinois’ business climate and boost jobs creation. “He’s got a plan to get our economy back on track, to get our budget under control, and at the same time, to direct more money to our schools. Education is the most important thing we do in our state,” Nybo said. “I think he can accomplish a lot. I think he is looking for partners. I am excited to be one of those partners, and I am ready to get to work.” State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged” by the governor’s pledge to consolidate units of government after she was part of the bipartisan effort in DuPage County.

The Willowbrook sophomore’s 19 points Saturday, including the game-winning 3-pointer, keyed a 64-63 win against Hinsdale South, but his performance in a 76-73 overtime win against AT the previous night was a highlight film. Verge’s 44 points, eight rebounds and six steals stole the show, and his blocked shot of an AT 3-point attempt at the buzzer was the fitting finale. The pair of weekend wins made it 11 straight for the Warriors (16-6, 5-3) heading into tonight’s game against Morton. “My teammates always get me going and keep my confidence up,” said Verge, who was just shy of his career-high of 45. “I try to lift them up, and they always come through for me and trust me with the ball, so I try to make as much positive happen as I can.” Verge’s very positive 20-point third quarter helped Willowbrook turn a 47-38 deficit with 2:22 left in the quarter into a 50-47 lead after three. Johnson went 1-2 at state last year and Donovan was a sectional qualifier. Those two are the only two sectional qualifiers back in the lineup this season. Drew Fugiel (120), Nolan Vincent (126), Scott Szabo (132) and Fred Morris (160) all won more than 20 matches during the regular season and also could break through in the regionals. The regional field is the same as last year, which poses some tough challenges. Oak Park-River Forest, the favorite in Class 3A, and strong teams in Wheaton North and Addison Trail pose threats in the regional.
