St. Alexander Catholic School to host open houses this month VILLA PARK – St. Alexander Catholic School in Villa Park is hosting three upcoming open houses. The open houses will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 3 p.m. April 25. The events will give area families an

opportunity to see the school. They also will learn about a tuition transfer program that offers them a $1,500 tuition credit for transferring to the school. As part of the program, students in first through seventh grades receive a $1,000 credit their first year after transferring and a $500 credit the second year. Students transferring from another Catholic school in the Diocese of Joliet are not eligible for the program. St. Alexander Catholic School is located at 136 S. District 48 to offer families free development screening for kids VILLA PARK – Salt Creek School District 48 in Villa Park will conduct free developmental screenings May 8 of

children 3 to 5 years old. Children must live in the district but not currently be enrolled in kindergarten. The screening process identifies how the child is currently developing. Assessed areas include speech and language, fine motor skills, social/emotional development and prereadiness skills. Screenings will be conducted by professional school staff. The screening process takes about an hour. Screening results will be shared with parents within a week of the screening. The screenings will be at Salt Creek Primary School, 980 Riverside Drive in Elmhurst. Appointments are necessary. lots as they left his store, encouraging them to cast their vote in favor of his daughter. But the annual festival was halted after 1936 by the Great Depression and World War II, she said. It did not resume again until 1947, and the crown used then was made of cardboard and wrapped in tin foil, Troiani said. Troiani said no one is quite sure why the original crown wasn’t used again, but she thinks it may have been put away, and when it came time to start the festival, because there had been downtime, they forgot to pull the crown out. A tin crown was created and used for several years after the festival resumed, and in recent years, a sparkly tiara has adorned the head of each Lilac queen, Troiani said. To maintain a connection with the past, however, each year’s five Lilac princesses have the opportunity to take a photo while wearing Reade’s creation and “have that special moment with the crown,” Troiani said. fore the crown was sent to the Driehaus Museum, the princesses all got their turn with the crown, she said. Troiani said she’s “very excited” to have the crown on display at the museum. Karlin said she was thrilled when the village’s historical society agreed to loan the piece to the Driehaus exhibit. The crown is a wonderful example of what came out of Chicago metal work, she said. “It is highly unusual; there is not another one like it,” Karlin said. Troiani, for her part, said she’s pleased that an important piece of the village’s history may now be seen by a much wider audience. “That’s something we are very excited to be able to share,” she said. The crown will be on display at the Driehaus Museum along with more than 250 other pieces of jewelry through the beginning of next year. A permanent exhibit featuring other historical Lilac Time relics is on display at the Lombard Historical Society.

LOMBARD – Eighty-five years ago, the women of Lombard donated their silver spoons to be melted down and crafted into a crown that was worn by the village’s first Lilac queen. The original crown, a simple bandeau design engraved with clusters of lilacs and leaves on its outer face and the names of the village’s first seven Lilac queens on the inside of the band, was created in 1930 by jewelry maker and metalworker Christia Reade, a Lombard native who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Reade’s subtle yet elegant creation is now on display as part of the “Maker & Muse: Women & Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry” exhibition at the Richard H. Driehaus Museum in Chicago. The early 20th century marked the first time in the United States’ and Britain’s histories that women were making jewelry and receiving recognition for their work, said

Elyse Zorn Karlin, curator of the Driehaus exhibit. Chicago served as one of the biggest centers of this trend, she said. Christia Reade was a product of the movement and a well-known metalworker of the period in Chicago, Karlin said. In the late 1920s, Lombard hired famed architect Jens Jensen to create a public park in the village with a specific focus on lilacs, said Natalie Troiani, executive director of the Lombard Historical Society. By 1930, the park was completed, and Reade was commissioned to create the crown used for the village’s first Lilac Time festival. The festival was something the community at the time wanted to get behind and support, Troiani said. Lombard’s first Lilac queen was a young woman by the name of Adeline Fleege, the daughter of a grocer, Troiani said. At that time, the queen was determined by ballot, and each ballot cost 5 cents, she said. Fleege’s father insured the win, Troiani said, by handing his customers bal-

D-45 art show encourages students to get creative By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com It wasn’t a Hollywood awards show, but students from School District 45 walked the red carpet April 10 as they entered Willowbrook High School for the district’s second annual Student Art Show. “We wanted this show to be on a level that no one has ever seen before,” said Paulina Jimenez, one of the creative directors for the show. “We want these kids to feel like they’re the stars of the show and for people to feel like they are walking into an art gallery. We transformed the space in the high school into an art gallery. This wasn’t just posting their pictures in the hallways.” Hundreds of students, family members and community members packed the school to view about 500 pieces of student artwork and listen to music performed by students from the district’s elementary schools. Ryley Goles, 13, displayed two drawings and one photograph in the show, which was open to any student in District 45. The Jackson Middle School seventh-grader said she stood next to her art just so she could hear com-

You can look at something and have a hundred different thoughts.” Ryley described art as her “key to happiness” and enjoys the way she’s able to express herself through her art.

Addison Trail to present spring play, ‘The Curious Savage’ SPONSORED BY

From April 9 to 11, Addison Trail will present its spring play, “The Curious Savage.” The comedic play tells the story of Ethel Savage, a woman whose husband recently died and left her $10 million. Her stepchildren want to use the money for selfish reasons and for their own benefit, so she buries the money to keep it from them. Frustrated with her actions, the stepchildren have Savage committed to a sanatorium in hopes she will “come to her senses.” The show contrasts the kindness and loyalty of the patients in the sanatorium with the vanity of “respectable” public figures. According to www.dramatists.com, “The audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.”

“A former Addison Trail student suggested this play, and I knew it would be the perfect spring comedy,” said Director Anna Jakubka. “It’s a cute, funny show.” Junior Heidi Scheleski plays Savage and said audience members can look forward to a lot of laughs and jokes throughout the play. Senior Hannah Yurek plays Fairy May, a patient Savage befriends at the sanatorium. Yurek said it’s bittersweet to take the stage at Addison Trail for the last time. “Being involved with theatre at Addison Trail during my four years here has taught me the importance of perseverance,” Yurek said. “I’ve learned that if you work hard and stay dedicated, you’ll eventually get the roles you want.”

6 Cafe run by D-88 transition

students celebrates anniversary By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com The Perks and Possibilities Cafe has been doing more than just serving coffee to Addison Public Library patrons for the past four years. It’s teaching real-life job skills to students in DuPage High School District 88’s Transition Program. “The students love working there,” said Christine DiRienzo, vocational coordinator for District 88. “There is a difference when they put on that uniform; they know they’re independent and giving back – like how we all feel when we do a good job at our place of employment.” The Transition Program serves special education students after high school until they turn 22. It helps the students learn vocational skills, as well as financial and independent living skills. The cafe, which is open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, celebrated its fourth anniversary in March. It is run by two students who are overseen by a staff member. The students are responsible for opening the cafe, making coffee, serving doughnuts and running the cash register. DiRienzo said most of the students

work at the cafe at some point because it’s the program’s main training site. “It’s a very nice environment,” she said. “The students form relationships with the regulars, and it’s such a great opportunity for them and highlights the skills they learn. It’s really nice to see the growth of the students who work there.” Addison Public Library Director Mary Medjo Me Zengue said she loves having Perks and Possibilities in the library. “We’re very proud of the partnership we have with the schools,” she said. “We look forward to seeing the kids each day and enjoy working with them. We’re very grateful for the service they provide to us and our patrons.” The students work at one of several training sites in the community after they complete their time at Perks and Possibilities, including Caputo’s, Empress Banquets and Sunmist Cafe. • CREATIVE Continued from page 4 national PTA art competition “Reflections,” but didn’t want it to be competitive, and wanted to give the students more creative freedom. “In ‘Reflections,’ students are limited to a certain theme, and I just had an idea to do an art show that allows our kids to create whatever they like and not have as many limitations,” Vroman said. Some of the art displayed included pencil drawings, paintings, 3-D sculptures and photography. “They had so much freedom with the subject, materials, size; there was no limit,” Jimenez said. “We were completely amazed by the high-caliber art and talent, just so impressed.” Wendee Goles, co-creative director, said she was very emotional while looking at the students’ art. “It made us cry,” she said. “Just looking at a piece of art and it melts your heart, and you know that child put so much into their piece. That’s the payoff for our hard work.” Wendee Goles and Jimenez spent months planning and prepping for the show. Wendee Goles said they built portable wall partitions and worked out many other details. “We were the ones with the drills – painting, sanding and lifting. There was a lot of physical labor,” said Jimenez, who attended the Art Institute of Chicago. “But we know the impact that art had on us, and to be able to use what we learned and to be able to pay back was worth it.” Jimenez and Wendee Goles, who also attended the Art Institute of Chicago, both believe art is important to education. “Art is everywhere, it touches everything and I believe art is really important,” Wendee Goles said. “Kids need art every day, and it needs to be more available to them. That’s what we’re trying to do [with the art show]. To help them find places to create.” Jimenez said she believes art teaches kids by “opening other parts of the brain” that other school subjects don’t. “I think of art as food for the soul,” she said. “Some people have a tendency to not see art as important as other areas, but it’s just as important as exercise and eating healthy. Studies have shown the positive impact art has on math and science. We just want to encourage kids to continue to do art.”

An event centered around informing and motivating the public to lead a healthy lifestyle is coming to Wheaton’s Cantigny Park on April 22. The B Fit B Active Expo will feature a discussion with industry leaders while exhibitors showcase their products and services intended to promote healthy lifestyles. Health and fitness experts from the area will discuss goal setting, training myths and best practices, injury prevention and turning a passion for exercise into a successful business at the event, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media. District 88 meeting unites community At DuPage High School District 88, our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement. We know we are successful in accomplishing that mission through the support of our stakeholders and our partnerships within the community. To enhance those partnerships, we recently hosted the first Villa Park intergovernmental meetCOMMUNITY ing. That event took place VOICE March 26 at Willowbrook Scott High School. The goal of the Helton initiative is to bring together community leaders to discuss how to continue to improve Villa Park, including District 88. We are part of an intergovernmental initiative in Addison, and we are thrilled to now have these meetings take place on the other side of our district as well. It is an opportunity for the local agencies to discover ways to work together to enhance the community and schools. More than 30 people attended the first meeting, representing the village of Villa Park, the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce, the Villa Park Fire Department, the Villa Park Police Department, the Villa Park Parks and Recreation department, the Villa Park Public Library, York Township, the DuPage County Board District 2, School District 45, Salt Creek School District 48 and District 88. Participants enjoyed a dinner prepared and served by The Brook Catering Co., which is comprised of Willowbrook students who are enrolled in culinary classes at the school. Events such as this meeting provide those students with real-world work experience they can use in their future careers. During dinner, musical entertainment was provided by Willowbrook musicians. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the many talents of our students. After dinner, we hosted the meeting, where all of the groups presented information about their respective agency. It was tremendous to hear and learn about the amazing efforts taking place in Villa Park, and we are excited to get even more involved in the community. We have scheduled the next Villa Park intergovernmental meeting for September 2015 at School District 45, and we look forward to continuing this initiative. Established in 1834, Fischer Farm is one of the oldest remaining homesteads in DuPage County. It’s just wonderful, and everyone is so receptive.” Barbanente said the partnership

with the Addison library is a “win-win” for everyone. “It’s huge for our kids because they’re learning the skills needed to run a business, and they feel comfortable there. They feel like that’s their cafe,” she said. At a time when funding is uncertain, Barbanente said the Transition Program is at “as much risk as other programs in the district.” While the program does receive some federal funds through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and from the state of Illinois through the Department of Health and Human Services and through reimbursement, the program is primarily funded locally, she said.

“Educational cuts would affect this program as much as our other programs, but Transitions isn’t being specifically targeted,” Barbanente said. “However, the district has lots of scenarios in place that we’re prepared to deal with.” DiRienzo said there is a “clear benefit” to the Transition Program, and its students usually fare much better than students who don’t participate in the program. “It’s really nice to see the growth in our students,” she said. “We’ve demonstrated that when students have these services, they’re able to maintain employment at a much higher rate than those who didn’t.”

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A former College of DuPage radio engineer accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the school’s radio station, WDCB, pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges Monday, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. John Valenta, 65, of the 1700 block of Lucky John Valenta Debonair Court, Wheaton, faces three charges of theft in excess of $100,000 – a Class X felony – and nine further counts of forgery, Darrah said. An internal audit conducted at the station, where Valenta was a 30-year employee, allegedly uncovered an “abnormally large number of costly invoices for radio station engineering services” from Broadcast Technologies, a company Valenta owned, according to a previous news release from the state’s attorney’s office.

An investigation revealed from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB. The investigation also indicated the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, was never delivered to the station. Valenta was originally charged Feb. 19 and posted bond on his $400,000 bail the next day, Darrah said. “The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement at the time. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.” Valenta’s attorney, Brad Telander, did not respond to a request for comment. His next court appearance is scheduled June 1 before Judge Liam Brennan, Darrah said.

After World War II, Bob and family set up house in Mankato, Minnesota where Bob worked for the Cargill Corporation. Captain Orvis was extremely patriotic and told the Army, “if and when President Truman declares the emergency, you can count on me.” And the country did count on him. In 1950, Bob was called up again by the Army for active duty, and was shipped to ChinHai South Korea. Captain Orvis was assigned, as returning South Korean President Syngman Rhee's personal bodyguard and was in charge of the bodyguard unit. Captain Orvis was guarding Syngman Rhee in the back seat of his car as his motorcade made a triumphant return to South Korea, having lived in exile 17 years. Thousands of South Koreans mobbed the motorcade. Captain Orvis watched in concern as a man ran next to their car and stuck his hand in his coat. Captain Orvis was prepared with his machine gun to shoot to kill. Instead of a gun, the man pulled out a rose. Captain Orvis actively served his country from 1943 to 1952. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Bob and Betty took up residence in Elmhurst, Illinois, where their third child, Barbara, was born. Bob and Betty were charter members of the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church and Bob was a 50 plus year member of the Elmhurst Masonic Lodge #941, and enjoyed Rotary. Until his 80th birthday in 2000, when he finally retired, Bob was very active and well-known in the advertising and promotion professions. Bob is survived by his three children, two grandsons, and three great grandchildren. Bob is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Betty, who died August 21, 2014. A military honor service will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024, April 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., Betty's 92nd birthday. The Rams got swept by South Elgin in the opening series in the Upstate Eight Valley last week and split the first two games of a three-game series against Metea Valley, losing 5-0 Tuesday and winning 3-2 Wednesday. Junior Mike Sebby, who has emerged as a solid No. 1 pitcher, took the loss Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Rams

Playing well early on doesn’t hurt either, which is exactly what Luke Scheumer and his Willowbrook teammates have been doing. “I feel like we’ve been playing well lately and we’re just hitting our stride right now,” Schemer said after the Warriors topped Hinsdale Central 12-7 on Tuesday for their seventh straight win. “Our bats are starting to roll and we know what our pitchers can do.
