Lombard could see more bike lanes, sidewalks By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LOMBARD – Bicyclists and pedestrians could soon have an easier time navigating the streets of Lombard. The village is working on a Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which would add bike lanes and sidewalks to some streets and link them up with existing paths and walkways. Carl Goldsmith, the village’s public works director, said this is part of a comprehensive plan for Lombard and will address the entire community to make it more bicycle and pedestrian friendly. The Public Works Committee began working on how to improve streets to accommodate more than just vehicles about a year ago, he said. “This project is still in its infancy. We’re just beginning to get an understanding of how we’re going to facilitate movement of bikes and pedestrians,” Goldsmith said. He said biking is becoming more popular as a mode of transportation, and not just for recreation. However, he said not every road is appropriate for bicycles and the village will look at major thoroughfares as a big part of the plan. One such thoroughfare is

Roosevelt Road. “It is not very user friendly for anything other than vehicles and we want to make it safer,” he said. “We’re also looking at North Avenue as a significant area for improvement. We want to move people from our existing paths and trails and link them with their workplaces.” Lombard is working with Chicago-based Alta Planning and Design. Josh Sikich, manager for Alta’s Chicago office, said Lombard is “positioned in a great way” to connect paths to neighborhoods and downtown areas. “We’re looking for potential routes on residential streets that can connect to the Great Western Trail or the

Prairie Path,” he said. “Those regional trails are really exciting and just a key opportunity to build off of.” Over the summer, Sikich said his team will collect data and look at how wide the streets are and how much traffic they have. They’ll also look at destinations like parks or schools where people want to bike. “We’re looking at simple ideas such as painting crosswalks or putting in signs to more complex plans like reallocating space for bike lanes into the roadways,” he said. Sikich hopes to have the final recommendations ready for the village this fall. During the summer, he said

there will be public meetings to gather residents’ input, as well as an interactive website with a map where residents can offer suggestions for routes. Sikich said having a bike network can make Lombard a more attractive community for potential residents, especially those who’d rather not have to drive. “People are commuting more to work or to the Metra station,” he said. “And there’s the health aspect as well. Studies show that more kids and adults are obese and this gives them an opportunity for exercise, rather than buying an expensive gym membership.” Sikich mentioned having expanded bike routes can have a positive impact on the local economy. “People will be able to stop at local restaurants or stop at an ice cream shop as they’re riding bikes with their families on the paths on a Saturday afternoon,” he said. Goldsmith and Sikich said the plan will benefit Lombard in the future as well. “This is a look into the future of Lombard 10 years down the road, and the bike and pedestrian paths are an important piece to the puzzle,” Sikich said. “The paths will make Lombard an even better place to live.”

Art show shines as D-45 masterpiece Creativity. Ingenuity. Depth. Music. Love. These are the words to describe our recent PTA Council art show April 10. The creative work of more than 300 student artists and musicians was displayed in the Willowbrook High School atrium. School board members, community members and government leaders attended the event to view the students’ work. Even the room COMMUNITY itself was artistiVOICE cally designed and Anthony adapted to maxiPalmisano mize the beauty of the evening. Having the most fun of all, I had the honor of choosing 12 works of art to keep and to display in the district’s board room until the next art show. As I explored the gallery, I chose the pieces that piqued my curiosity, fascinated my mind, appealed to my eye or tugged on my heart. In some cases, I was fortunate enough to meet the artists themselves. I was intrigued by everything. It was hard to choose from the many beautiful works of art. In the fall, I hope to display the student art, and I will certainly announce their arrival when the time comes. In the meantime, I can only support the fine arts in District 45 and the unity of effort that made this evening possible. Below is a quote from one of the displays during the evening. I believe this quote by Tracy Vroman, PTA Council Arts Committee chairwoman, describes our learning community in School District 45 and one that will serve as a key element in developing our mission and vision for years to come. “We in the District 45 community believe in the importance of each individual member’s contribution. Every one of us has a unique personality, set of beliefs and talents. By working together collaboratively, we create balance, shaping a magnificent masterpiece. The careful placement of sculptures symbolizes how we all rely on each other for that balance.” Thank you to all who participated and sacrificed hundreds of hours to instill the love of learning in our students and the value of creativity in our schools.

SB 1 just another dose of the same bad medicine Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB 16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” state Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • DuPage High School District 88 would lose $3.7 million of its $4.5 million in funding. • Elmhurst High School District 205 would be forced to forgo $4.6 million of the $6 million

it got in 2014. • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • West Chicago District 33, on the other hand, would get a $5.3 million boost on top of its $14.4 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB 1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst said, during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair, but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny, because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

The inception and establishment of public schools began in the 16th and 17th centuries. Compared with today, the original expectations for America’s public schools were simple – teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic and cultivate the values of a democratic society (some history and civics implied). Politicians and business leaders viewed public schools as the logical place to assimilate newly arrived immigrants and help with the social engineering of the first generation of the Industrial Age. This trend began and has accelerated ever since. Just look at what we have added through the decades: 1900 to 1940: Nutrition, speech, drama, immunization, halfday kindergarten, school lunch programs, business education, physical education and organized sports 1950s and ’60s: Driver’s education, consumer education, foreign language, career education, sex education and Advanced Placement programs 1970s and ’80s: Special education, bilingual education, drug and alcohol abuse education, keyboarding and computer education, full-day kindergarten, anti-smoking education, environmental education, sexual abuse prevention education, child abuse monitoring and Title IX (expanded sports for girls) 1990s and 2000s: HIV/AIDS education, expanded computer/ Internet education, integrated special education classes, tech prep and school to work programs, anti-bullying education and steroid abuse education. Despite not adding any minutes to the school day, public schools have heroically responded to this rising flood of expectations. Teachers are instructing more students in more subjects to higher levels in more creative and dynamic ways. Our public schools have prepared millions of people from all classes and backgrounds to achieve the American dream. Gov. Bruce Rauner and our legislators need to be reminded that adequate resources are critical to the continued efforts to meet this myriad of educational expectations. Appropriate investment in our local public schools is the best strategy to ensure all Illinois citizens can thrive and prosper.

VERNON P. SOUKUP Born: Dec. 15, 1925 Died: April 10, 2015 Vernon Philip Soukup, age 89, died of natural causes on April 10, 2015. Born December 15, 1925, to Erwin Rudolph and Libby Vlasta Soukup, he was predeceased by Joanne (nee Keepers), his wife of nearly 55 years. He is survived by his loving daughters, Nancy (Rich) Peterson, Martha (Michael Walsh) Soukup, Carolyn (Martin Maney) Soukup and Claudia (Ken) Beach; and his brother, Alan John Soukup. He was also predeceased by his brother, the Reverend Erwin Myron Soukup. Vernon was born in Wheaton and attended Wheaton Community High School. Following graduation, he attended DePauw University under the Navy V-12 officer training program for three years where he was commissioned as an officer and following that, graduated from the University of Illinois where he also attended two years of law school. In the early 1950's, Vernon became owner of Soukup's Hardware in Wheaton, following his father's retirement. He owned and operated the store for more than thirty years. Upon Vernon's retirement, he and Joanne moved to Algonquin, where he lived for 28 years.

ye Vernon was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton while residing there and Presbyterian Church of Barrington upon the move to Algonquin. At both churches, he served as an usher, Deacon and Elder. Vernon remained active in the Wheaton Rotary Club until last year, and helped coordinate that club's student foreign exchange program in the 1970's and 1980's. He had a perfect attendance record, attending meetings while out of town or out of the country even if he didn't speak the language. In Algonquin, Vernon volunteered for Good Shepherd Hospital and Meals with Wheels. Vernon and Joanne traveled the world and met many friends during their travels. They were patrons of the arts, collecting artwork from their foreign journeys, and enjoying live theatre and orchestra concerts frequently. The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event Wednesday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crow said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not shortterm goals. “It’s finding a fitness routine that’s going to give you something you can do for life,” she said. Crow joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers, world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano, injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel. Anderson stressed that those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent. Properly setting goals is important for reaching them, Giuliano said. Ketterling said throughout the training experience, it’s important not only to have proper cross-training and form but to listen to your body when it tells you to take a break. Leathers said he encourages people of all ages to start and chase what they want in business and in fitness.

WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. First, the new Town Square Wheaton location offers a cozier experience compared to the former digs. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

LOMBARD – There’s plenty of talent on Glenbard East’s boys volleyball team this season, but Ben Symonds has given the team some need flexibility in addition to talent. Symonds is a standout libero, but when the Rams have been down a hitter at various points this season, he has moved to outside hitter and been solid there as well. He is more comfortable at libero and has more experience at the position. His ability to be effective as a hitter at all came later in his playing career. “I guess just because I’m taller than regular liberos and I played a lot of club,” he said. “As a freshman, I was really short so I couldn’t really hit. I just grew sophomore year.” When Tyler Greene was out early in the season, Symonds competently held down outside hitter. When Greene returned, Symonds moved back to his normal position. Now Symonds’ brother, Nick Symonds, is out for a few matches and Ben is back at outside hitter. “Ben is kind of our utility guy,” coach Marci Maier said. “He’s swinging outside for us right now, and hopefully when Nick gets back we’ll be able to move him back to our libero position and be even stronger.” Jackson Kenny moved to libero in Tuesday’s 25-13, 25-13 win against Bartlett. Trio of close games go against Willowbrook By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com VILLA PARK – Willowbrook baseball was flying high until Downers Grove South came to town. The Warriors had won 11 of their first 13 games before DGS took some wind out of their sails by sweeping a threegame series to take over first place in the West Suburban Gold. Willowbrook was 6-0 in the Gold entering the series. “I think we’re both talented teams, and when you make mistakes either team capitalizes and I think they made less mistakes,” Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner said. “When a team makes a mistake [against] a good team, there is a good chance they’re going to capitalize.” All three losses came at home. The Mustangs (11-2, 6-0), who have won 10 straight, completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory Monday in a game that was supposed to be played in Downers Grove until field conditions necessitated a switch. The Mustangs capitalized on Willowbrook errors in wins Saturday and Monday. They took advantage of five

errors to win 6-3 on Saturday after taking Friday’s opener 2-1. On Monday, Willowbrook (11-6, 6-3) made four more errors, which led to two runs, including the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single by Trey Jones (2 for 3) had given the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the fourth before the Mustangs, who have won 24 consecutive Gold games, tied it in the bottom of the inning and later extended the lead to 4-2 in the sixth when a hit batsman eventually scored. The Warriors rallied in the seventh as Jones led off with a single and scored on a two-out pinch single by Cam Ligocki, but Downers South pitcher Zack Jones retired the next hitter on a flyout to right to end it. Matt Garbacz (3-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Warriors. He pitched a complete-game six-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts as an emergency replacement for Matt Pizur, who was ill. “I got to believe we’re still one of the best teams in the West Suburban,” Wisner said. “I wouldn’t think [Downers Grove South] would want to play us again. These were great games.”

Outlook: The Warriors have decent balance with strong throwers, distance runners and sprinters. Jimmy Funteas Jr. is the cream of the crop for the distance runners. For now he is running the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, but that figures to change for the cross country state qualifier. “We are going to narrow his focus on less races and key in on one distance in the near future,” coach T.J. Artman said. Younger runners Marco Martinez and Casey King also have contributed in the distance races. Elijah Rochel is having a strong season as a thrower and took third in the discus at West Aurora’s John Bell Invitational on Saturday.

Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outfit Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s first-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were first to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical finish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The goal of UCP Seguin's Persons with Disabilities Transportation Project is to provide individuals with developmental disabilities served by UCP Seguin with safe and reliable transportation adapted to their special needs. These individuals need transportation to medical facilities, job sites, educational settings, stores, and social and recreational venues in the Chicagoland area. UCP Seguin seeks a total of four paratransit vehicles from the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Vehicle Procurement Capital Assistance Program. UCP Seguin requests the replacement of two of its oldest paratransit vehicles, due to excessive mileage and increasing need for repair, with two new vehicles; and requests two new paratransit vehicles to address expansion of services to residents with disabilities at two new group homes. Each van is equipped for six passengers and has a projected cost of $41,000 per vehicle. This project will be included in a Consolidated Vehicle Procurement Program undertaken by the State of Illinois on behalf of United Cerebral Palsy Seguin of Greater Chicago, with State and Federal Funds.
