editorial@mysuburbanlife.com VILLA PARK – Villa Park residents can look forward to food, beer, live music and a wrestling show at the 10th annual Summerfest, which runs June 19 and 20 at Ardmore Avenue and Park Boulevard. “People get excited about this every year,” said Dan Dix, Summerfest commissioner. “It’s close to home, and it’s a great time to hang out with neighbors, family and friends.” The North American Pro Wrestling Team will be back at this year’s fest for three matches June 20. Mike Gats, chairman of the Summerfest commission, said the group was very popular last year, especially with kids. “They just really loved it and were entertained by it. I thought it was very interesting,” Gats said. Live music also is a big part of the festival, he said. The band Six to Midnight will headline June 19’s entertainment. The band covers classic rock and current hits, as well as some country. “They were here last year and were very popular. They play a variety of songs, and a lot of people dance,” Gats said. In addition to the music, residents can enjoy a free car show from 6 to 10 p.m. June 19. Residents and local car clubs show a variety of cars, including hot rods, classic cars and antique cars, Gats said. There also is a bags tournament that begins at 6 p.m. that day. June 20 will feature an entire day of entertainment beginning at 11 a.m. with appearances from local groups and clubs, including Villa Park residents Caitlyn and Meghan Foley, who play acoustic guitar. The headliner is Soul to Soul, which plays 70s and 80s rock, Dix said. While enjoying the live music, adults can visit the beer tent or sample the fare of several local restaurants. There will be about six or seven vendors, including Taco Real, Tae Fu Chinese and Fire Water BBQ, Gats said. “We want to have a variety of food, but we don’t have too many vendors because we don’t want anything duplicat-

Some have been with us for years.” Summerfest also will offer a variety of activities for kids all day June 20. Some of the free events include a martial arts demonstration from Joe’s Dojo, a balloon artist, a live reptile show, a magic show and face painting. Kids will need tickets, or an all-day wristband that’s available for $10, to attend certain attractions or games. “We have a duck pond with prizes for the little ones, as well as Midway games with prizes and a variety of inflatables,” Gats said. “For the older kids, we have Euro Bungy, where kids are harnessed and can jump. That’s always popular. We’ll also have a 70-foot-long zip line

and a 40-foot-tall rock climbing wall.” Also returning this year is the arts and crafts show June 20, with a variety of crafters, including a taxidermist. “Last year (the taxidermist) did really well,” Dix said. “We’re having a psychic this year, which is new. But there will be jewelers, glass makers, birdhouses, lawn art. The craft show is very popular with the public. People like to look at things they can’t find in a big-box store.” Between 40 and 50 people from various community groups and organizations volunteer for Summerfest. Dix said the volunteers are “very important” to the event. “If we didn’t have volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to hold Summerfest,” he said. “We count on them quite a bit.” Gats said he’s looking forward to Summerfest, which he described as “a big block party for the community.” “We want to involve all residents and offer a variety of activities so everyone can enjoy it, while keeping costs affordable,” he said.

CAN YOUR MORNING CUP PREVENT SKIN CANCER? Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is triggered by DNA damage in skin cells caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning beds. As the mutations cause the cells to grow abnormally, they can metastasize and become fatal. In light of this potentially dire outcome, dermatologists urge their patients to shield themselves from the sun’s damaging effects with sunscreen and protective clothing and to tanning beds. Now it seems many people have also been making a lifestyle choice that has provided them with a lower risk of developing melanoma. According to recent research, people who drank more than four cups of coffee daily, on average, had a 20% lower risk of developing melanoma over ten years.

On June 7, nearly 1,000 students walked across the stage during the commencement ceremonies at Addison Trail and Willowbrook high schools and into the next chapter of their lives. As the students received their diplomas, I couldn’t help but reflect on the legacy they’re leaving behind. As we officially say goodbye to the 2014-15 school year, we would like to share COMMUNITY eight highlights from District VOICE 88. Scott • Our graduation rate conHelton tinues to be above the state level, and more than 90 percent of the class of 2015 at Addison Trail and at Willowbrook has been accepted to a two- or four-year college or university. • More students than ever enrolled in AP courses this year, which allow them to earn college credit while in high school. • We had students qualify to compete at the state and national levels in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, DECA, Business Professionals of America, Ford/AAA, SkillsUSA, Speech, Math, Science Olympiad and the Illinois Music Education Association. • This year, District 88 had nine All-State and six Academic All-State athletes recognized by the Illinois High School Association. Twenty-three individuals and teams from District 88 qualified for IHSA State competition. • Our students and staff raised more than $60,000 for the American Cancer Society, hosted blood drives to benefit LifeSource, participated in numerous community events and more. • We’ve partnered with Addison Community Television this year to film a new video segment called “The State of District 88.” The show takes place every other month and highlights student successes, as well as important information about the district. • In March, we hosted the first Villa Park Intergovernmental meeting at Willowbrook with leaders of the community to discuss how we can continue to improve Villa Park, including District 88. • District 88 has been named as “Top High Schools” by Newsweek and as “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” by The Washington Post since 2008. Addison Trail and Willowbrook also were named as “Best Public High Schools in the Chicago Metro Area” in the 2015 Niche Rankings. To reach this success, it takes a village. We know it’s because of our stakeholders and communities working together that we’re able to build futures for students and accomplish our mission of working for the continuous improvement of student achievement. Thank you for your continued support of District 88.

SOUND OFF

Madigan is the real dictator

If you’re going to call anyone a dictator, it should be House Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s mostly responsible for the mess that the state is in. He’s been in power for 30 years. Gov. [Bruce] Rauner has been in office for five months. Put the blame where it belongs.

I agree with Bob Costas

I never agree much with sportscaster Bob Costas. When he speaks on nonsports issues, I don’t agree with him much. But I totally agree with him about Bruce Jenner getting this Arthur Ashe courageous award in July on ESPN. Costas said Jenner getting the award was crass, tabloid stuff. Political correctness run amok. I could’t agree with Costas more, and he’s a liberal himself. Well, CBS will be expecting a huge rating on that night. … How sad.

stay on the road – what they’re supposed to be – there shouldn’t be a problem. Cars have a proper place to drive, bikes should have a proper place to drive. Nobody should be getting in each other’s way if they just stayed on the bicycle paths like they’re supposed to.

DRIVING CONSIDERATIONS Waning driving skills place older drivers at risk for automobile crashes. One of the contributing factors to motor vehicle crashes (the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65-75) is declining eyesight. As we age, the pupils in our eyes shrink and do not dilate as much in the darkness. As a result, the amount of light entering the eye decreases. While this difference may not be entirely noticeable during the day, twilight or dim light can make it similar to wearing sunglasses. At the same time, seniors may find it more difficult to adjust back and forth between bright light and dim light. All of these factors make it more important for seniors to have their vision examined regularly. As we age, eye exams become even more important. Vision problems may develop with no physical symptoms until they’re quite advanced. By being well-informed, you can recognize signs of trouble – and possibly slow the progression of a sightthreatening disease. To schedule an eye exam, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We provide treatment for eye diseases and eye injuries as well offering custom contact lens fittings and a large selection of frames at competitive prices. To schedule an exam, please call us today. This is in response to the person who said [Gov. Bruce] Rauner was elected governor, not dictator. Well, the state of Illinois needs a dictator. We don’t need any more of these Democrats who wouldn’t recognize a balanced budget if it bit them. What we need is a guy who is going to go out and get the balanced budget and go after these people who are always asking for more, more, more – these public service unions. It used to be that teachers made a small amount of money, and people felt sorry for them. But now they’re trying to hide the fact that the average teacher makes over $100,000 a year. How many of their students’ parents make that kind of money? [Rauner] could do a better job if he just showed those free spending Democrats the door.

I agree with comments regarding toxic chemicals in our community. I’m pregnant and [I] can’t even walk in my subdivision, sit in my yard or open my windows because so many of our neighbors have lawn chemical treatments every month. It’s amazing to me that after all these years and the knowledge we now have about the cancers and other serious problems these products cause that people still use them. It is their choice, but it also affects my family, my pets and myself, which isn’t fair. No chemical is safe; think about what you are doing.

Road treatment work set to begin SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – The 2015 Preservative Surface Treatment Project was scheduled to begin June 18 in Lombard, as long as weather allowed, according to a village of Lombard news release. The project involves applying a rejuvenating agent to the road, which provides an environmental seal on the asphalt surface to improve durability and increase the road’s service life, the release stated. The material is sprayed on the pavement in a one-pass application, followed by an application of sand. Once the contractor begins work at a specific location, the road will be closed for several hours until the sand fully bonds to the sealant, according to the release. Any excess sand remaining after one week will be swept up. The project should be completed

DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of Suburban Life, announced June 17 it is purchasing Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren. Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites. “We are proud to welcome the Record Newspapers to our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We look forward to continuing the Farrens’ tradition of quality local journalism while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Record’s presence through digital formats.” The transaction is expected to close June 26. “We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities,” Kathy Farren, Record editor, said. “So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commitment to continue that level of coverage for our readers.” Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985. “The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said. “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.” Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

Consumer Tips

Preserving a new home’s value

By Laura Firszt Networx

No doubt about it, a newly constructed home has tremendous appeal. Everything is fresh and clean, just waiting for you and your family to move in, and the finishes and fixtures are exactly what you want. True, it costs quite a pretty penny, but you’re sure it will be worth it. Or will it? Will your brand new property keep its value … or might it be like a new car, which starts depreciating the minute you drive it off the lot? The answer, you’ll see, is not so simple. Compare old and new Compare the pool of properties on the market in terms of price, size, and amenities. Bear in mind, though, that you’re looking at apples and oranges; New homes are built to the latest standards of energy efficiency, while older houses usually have the advantage of larger rooms and thicker walls. Recognize that new construction tends to cost more than resale, so it will take you a while to build up equity. If you do buy new, make sure that you take advantage of all the perks the builder makes available, which could range from a kitchen upgrade to a lower interest rate on your home loan. You can also reduce the effective cost of your property purchase by applying for Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency.

Protecting your new home’s value Investigate the warranty offered by the building contractor. Typically, this guarantees appliances and systems for a year and structural elements for 10 years. Find out which issues the warranty includes: What action will it require the builder to take in case of problems, whether major foundation cracks or small flaws in the home’s finishing, like broken backsplash tiles? Hire a qualified home inspector as a third party to check your new house and to represent your interests at the scheduled construction inspections. In addition to the homeowner’s insurance required by your lending institution, you may want to take out disability-income insurance or an umbrella policy. Once you’ve moved in, take good care of your house and landscape. Regular maintenance will help you enjoy your property more and reduce the risk of future problems such as mold infestation. Avoid DIY for major home improvements or repairs unless you are a qualified contractor.

Restaurant reviews

Gia Mia pizzeria fires up artisanal menu WHEATON – A contemporary wood plank facade is the sleek new wrapping for the latest restaurant enterprise of chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after his youngest daughter. It opened in downtown Wheaton in April and specializes in wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta dishes and small plates, all ideal for sharing the inventive fresh flavors the chef already is known for at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner. Gia Mia describes itself as a pizza bar that emphasizes farm-to-fork Italian cooking. The interior features pale shades of wood and brick that set a warm tone, along with dangling, industrial-chic bulbs for light. A crowd set a convivial tone in the front dining room the weeknight we visited. The Blackhawks were playing a game running up to the finals, and a television there and one at the bar kept interested fans up on the score. We opted for the mellow bar area, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of its own, all the better to watch the action at the pizza oven. The controlled inferno holds court in all its red-mosaic-tiled glory in the corner and has ringside seating for diners. The wine list is extensive and offers some plucky suggestions off the beaten path, such as an Austrian white – Grüner Veltliner – for a light summer aperitif. The mixologists also proffer craft beer selections. We opened with a smallplate offering of veal meatballs basking in a zesty roasted tomato sauce and topped with little caps of whipped ricotta. The creamy cheese mimicked the velvety texture of the mild-flavored, finely ground meat. We’re glad we tried one of the unusual vegetable dishes: charred cauliflower. The delicate roasted veggie provided the perfect canvas for a palette of flavors drawn from green and black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-

Flavorful roasted tomato sauce adds zest to rich meatballs crowned with whipped ricotta. Pancetta and fresh arugula team up in this wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza, sporting houseping and local honey. We left room for dessert, made mozzarella. Next up had to be woodfired pizza, so we decided on the pancetta and arugula combination, which arrived with a tasty, hand-formed crust drizzled with olive oil, and showing the tell-tale light charring on the edges. Prepared Neapolitan style, it had delectable smatterings of house-made mozzarella to contrast with the pancetta – an Italian spin on cured bacon – along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was covered in fresh, baby arugula, a wonderfully peppery green.

but next time, we plan on two pizzas and some more of the creative vegetables and salads on the menu such as sugar snap peas prepared with shallots, garlic, mint, whipped ricotta and extra virgin olive oil, or the Tuscan black kale with pear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon. Both pasta and pizza crust are available gluten-free, and the restaurant offers a varied menu for children. As for dessert, we loved the Italian pudding and sorbet combo, an abundance of rich-

es modestly served in a mug. The cooked-cream, panna cotta-inspired pudding was a light and smooth vanilla base for the explosion of fruity flavor in the blueberry sorbetto. It was outstanding. Sweets lovers also have such temptations as Nutella pizza and ricotta fritters with chocolate chips. The service was friendly and pampering, without being intrusive, helping make Gia Mia an engaging new person-

what she’s done for the Willowbrook softball community.” This summer Schmidt is playing travel ball in preparation for her college career and is helping out with some camps at Willowbrook. She moves in to NIU on Aug. 21 and practice starts the next day. It will be the first time Schmidt won’t be able to play with Ressinger since not long after they learned to walk. Even when Schmidt started in baseball because that’s where her older brother did, Ressinger was there for that, too. “We started baseball together,” Schmidt said. “We both played in kindergarten together. We were always on the same team. I’m definitely going to miss her the most out of anything in high school.” Schmidt switched from baseball to softball in sixth grade and said the more competitive start to her career helped her development. Now she switches from high school to college, but hasn’t lost sight of what the Warriors accomplished while she was in the blue and white uniform. When asked what stands out about her high school career, her answer again was about the team instead of herself. “I think it’s just the fact that as our 2015 class we made such a big impact on the program,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt, the Suburban Life All-Area MVP, put together a remarkable season and a record-breaking career in four years with the Warriors. The shortstop, who will play at Northern Illinois next spring, hit .578 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs this season and finished her career with a .509 average, 44 home runs, 193 RBIs and 179 runs. Perhaps the only way to maintain stats like that is to not think about them too much, which is the approach Schmidt says she takes. Instead, she focuses on what the team accomplished. “I try not to think about the stats too much,” Schmidt said. “When I was in eighth grade, they were 9-21. And we went 21-9 my freshman year. I’m really proud of what we accomplished.” Schmidt and her classmates helped Willowbrook win 84 games in four years on varsity. Alyssa Ressinger, Schmidt’s best friend and a fellow allstate player this season, and Delaney Pelsor also were fouryear varsity players. All that Schmidt has done for Willowbrook softball and the fact she’s really likable mean that Willowbrook softball coach Rachel Karos may miss her as much as anyone next year. “You can look at her statistics and see what you’re losing
