VILLA PARK – A group of residents, with help from village officials, are working together to bring a cooperative grocery store to Villa Park late next year in an effort to provide locally sourced, healthy food to the community. The co-op, dubbed Mama Squash Market, will function as a for-profit business, said Kristin Krueger, a member of the co-op’s board and steering committee. Krueger said co-ops are governed by seven principles, including economic member participation, which means the business is owned by the members of the co-op. Unlike many for-profit businesses, the bottom line for Mama Squash isn’t making as much money as possible, it’s “the health of the community and individuals, and quality products,” she said. One of the biggest goals of Mama Squash is to introduce food sourced from local farmers to the community, Krueger said. For example, blueberries sold at the market will be sourced from Michigan, not South America. The food is going to be fresher, and customers’ carbon footprints will be reduced by eating things that are from nearby sources, she said. Additionally, Krueger said the produce sold at the store won’t be genetically modified, and it will be sold in

She said the co-op hopes to reach its goal of 1,000 members by fall 2016 – a total that will allow them to open up in a brick-and-mortar location. Mama Squash currently has 50 members, she said. Although anyone will be able to shop in the store, members will receive a discount on items, share in the profits and be invited to participate in special events, Krueger said. Each membership carries a $100 one-time fee. Typical Chicago-area co-op membership costs anywhere from $250 to $300, she said. The Mama Squash board aimed to keep the mem-
bership fee as low as possible to accommodate community members with lower incomes, Krueger said. The co-op’s name also speaks to its mission of inclusion. “A mama welcomes all,” Krueger said. “And that’s really the message we wanted to put out there.” The village is working with the Mama Squash board to help the co-op select a site for its store in Villa Park, Village President Deb Bullwinkle said. She said the ideal location would be one residents could either walk or drive to. “From the village’s perspective, we’re all in, in terms of helping them locate in Villa Park and succeed in Villa Park,” she said. Bullwinkle herself is a member of the co-op and said she believes the market will facilitate a sense of community in the village. “I really like the idea of investing in a local grocery store that then in turn invests in our local farmers and the folks that bring the food to us,” she said. Both Bullwinkle and Krueger said the important thing now is to educate residents about the co-op and the benefits it will bring to those living in the village and beyond its borders. “We have a diverse community in Villa Park,” Bullwinkle said. “(The coop) will appeal to all, to everybody, and that’s the goal. Nobody is going to be shut out.”
“We’re just so proud of her. Every time we get a chance, we go to Minnesota to see her games. We get there about three times a month every summer. We also go to Indiana, Oklahoma and, of course, when her team plays the Chicago Sky.”

Bob and Petrina Moore of Lombard hold up photos of their favorite sports star, their granddaughter and WNBA player Maya Moore. Gloria Casper, a fellow Beacon Hill resident and close friend of the Moores, was cheering for the Lynx as she watched the game. “All I heard from the announcers was ‘Maya Moore,’ so she scored a lot of points,” Casper said. “I have a picture of her that they gave me. They always talk about what Maya’s doing, where she’s playing, and about all her accomplishments. I was rooting against Chicago this time. ” Marc Raben, director of leisure services at Beacon Hill, described the Moores as “very humble,” even though they have a superstar basketball player in their family. “They’re just extremely proud of Maya,” Raben said. “I’m trying to get her to come here to give a talk to the

residents. They’d just love that. We’d have a full house.” The Moores, who have been married for 63 years, moved to Lombard from Chicago where they were both educators. Petrina explained that Maya visited Beacon Hill with them when they were making a decision about where to live. Maya liked Beacon Hill and helped them decide to move there. “We love it here,” Bob said. “The residents are the best in the world, and the staff is very helpful. We’ve had nothing but good experiences here. We were welcomed with open arms.” Maya is the daughter of Bob and Petrina’s daughter Kathryn. She grew up in Jefferson City, Mo., and went to high school in Suwanee, Ga., where Bob said she was a star student both

athletically and academically. Maya received a four-year scholarship to play basketball at the University of Connecticut, and Bob said they traveled there frequently to see her games. “We felt that university had a respect for Maya’s abilities,” Bob said. “She has always been excellent at basketball and played on championship teams. Where Maya Moore goes, championships follow. She’s the greatest women’s basketball player in the world.” After graduating from college in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Maya was the No. 1 WNBA draft pick that year. She’s been playing for the Lynx ever since. “We were there when she was drafted, and she was delighted,” Petrina said. “In her first year, the Lynx won the WNBA championship. She also played in the 2012 Olympics and won a gold medal. Our whole family went to London to see her.” Bob and Petrina don’t get to talk to Maya too often these days, but they do watch every Lynx game on TV or on their computer. “She’s always on the go; they keep her so busy,” Bob said. “We don’t like to take up her time with small talk, but she goes out of her way for family. She lets us know that she wants to spend time with us when she can. She’s just a gift from God.”

LOMBARD – Not many people in the Chicago area are big fans of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. But Bob and Petrina Moore, residents of Lombard’s Beacon Hill Senior Living, have a good reason to closely follow the team. Their granddaughter Maya Moore is the Lynx’s star player and reigning MVP of the WNBA. “We’re just so proud of her,” Bob said. “Every time we get a chance, we go to Minnesota to see her games. We get there about three times a month every summer. We also go to Indiana, Oklahoma and, of course, when her team plays the Chicago Sky.” Recently, the Moores were able to see Maya play without traveling too far. The Lynx played the Sky on July 10, and the couple took several friends to the Allstate Arena in Rosemont to see the game. Bob said not only were they able to have dinner with Maya, 26, before the game, but she spent time with the group after the game, taking pictures and signing autographs. “She was very accommodating,” Petrina said. “She made time for her grandparents. She made us feel wonderful, and we were so thrilled.” The Moores have lived at Beacon Hill for just more than a year, but already most of the staff and residents know about Maya. Bob and Petrina have “boxes and boxes” of photos and newspaper clippings of Maya and often share her accomplishments. Petrina said the residents are supportive of Maya, and many of them even watched the recent game on TV. “Even though her team lost, everyone told us what a great job she did,” Petrina said. “She’s still No. 1 to all of us at Beacon Hill.”

Lombard Pride Committee talks timing of new summer event By PAIGE LISTON pliston@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The recently formed Lombard Pride Committee met for the first time July 9 at Village Hall, taking the first steps in planning next year’s new summer festival. The committee was created by a resolution in June to help advise the Village Board on matters relating to special events and community festivals in Lombard. At the meeting, Village President and committee Chairman Keith Giagnorio stressed the importance of thinking outside of what has been done in the past regarding community festivals. He specifically referred to the Taste of Lombard, which was canceled this year because of the disbandment of the Lombard Jaycees, who usually organize the event. “Wipe the Taste of Lombard from your memories,” Giagnorio said. “We’re open to all suggestions. ... Don’t get married to what has been for the past 26 years. We’re putting the framework together to set the new standard.” The committee is made up of a wide range of people, from residents who have lived in Lombard for 49 years to those who have lived in the village for
turned into a five-day event. “We should have the festival on a weekend, not a holiday weekend. It could be more of a reunion among the citizens rather than a huge five-day event,” Kuderna said. Giagnorio said five days is taxing on restaurants, resulting in an eventual decline as they start to drop out. He said ideally the new festival would be two days long, taking place on Friday and Saturday, with a teardown on Sunday, in order to limit noise complaints. Members agreed with Giagnorio’s thought process and considered planning a smaller event that might receive more community participation. Kuderna also discussed the presence of village restaurants at the Taste of Lombard in the past. “It was a real Taste of Lombard beBill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com cause we had local restaurants there,” Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio (right) listens to Village Manager Scott NieKuderna said. “It was a family event, haus’ comments July 9 during the first meeting of the Lombard Pride Committee. and we want to get it back to something the community can be proud of.” less than two. Shop and Dine Elmhurst: It’s Indispensable SPONSORED BY
How important is it for Elmhurst residents to shop and dine in our City? It’s indispensable. According to City Treasurer Elaine Libovicz’s recently-published report for Fiscal Year 2014—the first budget aligned with the calendar year—sales taxes from retail ($16.7 million) and food and beverage ($1.8M) accounted for more than 36% ($18.78M) of Elmhurst’s total revenues ($51.8M), while oft-bemoaned property taxes ($11.75M) totaled less the 23%. Buying your vehicle at an Elmhurst dealership is immensely beneficial to our municipality. In good times, auto sales account for 35 to 40 cents of every retail tax dollar, and increases to 45 cents when related sales taxes (i.e., fuel, parts) are factored in. The City nets $100 per every $10,000 in sales, generating some $4M in taxes in 2014. Elmhurst Auto Group (Toyota-Scion, BMW and Jaguar) generated some $1M in taxes from some 4,700 vehicle sales, while Larry Roesch Chrysler Jeep Dodge totaled some $600K in taxes
on 2,000-plus units sold. Anchored by the Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center, the Route 83 and St. Charles Road Business District generates considerable taxes from both retail sales and food and beverage. The new Whole Foods Market, which opened May 27, is already exceeding sales projections, too. While Elmhurst City Centre typically generates less than 10% of the combined sales tax, downtown Elmhurst embodies the heart of our City—especially compared to neighboring communities that no longer have a traditional Central Business District or do not attract new investment and redevelopment (nearly $100M), both commercial and residential. Anchored by the 10-screen York Theatre, downtown Elmhurst offers food and beverage establishments for all events and occasions, assorted boutique-style merchants and entertainment, while other unique business districts provide a variety of shopping and dining options. So get it in Elmhurst. Got It?!

Meals, volunteers are OUR VIEW needed this summer Important steps to avoid at homeless shelters contracting West Nile virus DuPagePads provides meals, overnight housing and safety 365 nights a year to families and individuals who are homeless, but summer is where we are most in need of volunteers and meal donations. COMMUNITY Do you have a company, service group or club that VOICE could provide hot dinners for Carol one of our Interim (Overnight) Simler Housing sites this summer? Meals are most needed at our Wheaton location (60 people on Monday nights) and Oakbrook Terrace location (50 people on Saturday nights). Some groups bring prepared catering such as pasta or chicken. Many larger groups coordinate to have each person bring a menu item to make a family style dinner. The time commitment is flexible and would include whatever food preparation time you would need, with a drop off time of 5:30 p.m. If your group is interested in staying to serve, timing would be 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Groups have found the meal preparing to be a great team-building activity with the added benefit of making a difference. We hope you consider providing a meal to someone who is hungry and going through a challenging time in their life. Thank you to those who have donated meals already this summer: KFC in Wheaton, Chipotle in Glen Ellyn and Ecolab in Elk Grove Village. Individual volunteers also are needed at the Interim (Overnight) Housing sites to help with a variety of shifts, especially overnight monitoring of the site. Visit our website to see a complete list of open shifts, www.dupagepads.org. To donate a meal or volunteer at the Interim (Overnight) Housing sites, contact Colleen at cconwood@dupagepads.org or call 630-682-3846 ext. 3500. Planning on attending a festival? Volunteer on behalf of DuPagePads and we will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event based on the number of volunteers we send. Volunteering at festivals often has added perks such as hearing live music, free admission after your shift, free T-shirts and more. Upcoming festivals include Naperville Alefest on July 18 and the Naperville Jaycees’ “Last Fling” from Sept. 4 to 7. Shifts fill up quickly, so contact Linda Flo today if you are interested in signing up at lflo@dupagepads.org or 630-682-3846 ext. 2520.
Carol Simler is the president and CEO of DuPagePads.
It seems the buzz surrounding the West Nile virus in Illinois quiets more every summer. That’s not a reason, however, to not take precautions to reduce your risk to exposure. The DuPage County Health Department, according to its website, has made four positive tests of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus so far this year, and Cook County has discovered 15 positive pools this year. The Will County Health Department last week in Bolingbrook collected its first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus. In 2014, there were 44 human cases of West Nile in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Health. There were three deaths, including one in DuPage County. Those figures are down from the 117 human cases and 11 deaths in 2013 and 290 human cases and 12 deaths in 2012. Human cases started to spike after only five were reported in 2009. In 2010, there were 61 human cases of West Nile virus, including four deaths. There were 34 human cases and three deaths in 2011. West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). There are steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten by a West Nile-infected mosquito. Follow these tips from the health department: • Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active – usually dawn and dusk. • When possible, avoid the outdoors during peak biting times – dawn and dusk. • Spray clothing with insect repellent. • Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin by following label directions. Some experts recommend lower concentra-

tions for children. Check with your doctor before applying insect repellent on infants, and wash your hands after using insect repellent. • Look for EPA-labeled products containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. It also is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites from around your residence. Mosquito eggs can develop in any standing water that lasts more than five to seven days. Follow these health department tips: • Turn over children’s wading pools and toys when not in use. • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling and trash containers that are left outdoors. • Change water in birdbaths twice a week. • Fix leaky faucets. They provide water where mosquitoes can breed. • Drill holes in window boxes and flower planters to prevent water from pooling. • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock with mosquito-eating fish. • Keep pools clean and chlorinated. • Eliminate standing water in your property. Take proper precautions this summer to reduce your exposure to the West Nile virus.

TESTING TWILIGHT VISION Researchers have recently developed a standardized approach for testing “twilight vision” that will help identify people with reduced visual acuity in low light conditions. While the typical “E chart” test for visual acuity is performed at light levels that approximate daylight, twilight vision (or vision at dusk) can be noticeably worse, especially for young adults who have a slight shift toward myopia, older adults with decreased clarity of their internal eye lens, and those with retinal eye diseases that cause decreased vision at lower light levels. The new test utilizes filters to test at a light level 100 times lower than for daylight visual acuity testing, thereby enabling vision care professionals to obtain “reliable and repeatable” measurements of twilight vision. Seeing clearly is just one part of your overall eye health. It’s important to have regular eye exams whether or not you wear glasses or contacts, and even if your vision is sharp. To schedule an eye exam, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We provide treatment for eye diseases and eye injuries as well offering custom contact lens fittings and a large selection of frames at competitive prices. To schedule an exam, please call us today. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. “Scotopic vision” is the eyes’ ability to adjust for vision in dim light and darkness.

Giagnorio referred to the future Lombard festival as a “generic community event,” as the committee has yet to reach any definitive conclusions on a name. “Everything this committee plans is going to be 100 percent open and transparent,” Giagnorio said. “The trustees told me they are behind us with any decisions we make, and they were very supportive of us forming this committee.” Regarding funding for the event, Village Manager Scott Niehaus assured the committee that if it is an event that raises funds, the village will be reimbursed through proceeds. Additionally, Niehaus said a survey needs to be sent out to learn when other towns in DuPage County will be hosting their summer festivals, so that Lombard’s does not conflict. The committee decided the festival will take place between the beginning of May and end of September. Members are considering changing the festival’s location as well, moving away from Madison Meadow Park and perhaps looking at Lombard Commons Park to host the event. The committee decided to try to meet at least twice a month in order to get the planning started for next year’s festival. The next Lombard Pride Committee meeting is slated for 7 p.m. July 29.

The recent intentional mischaracterization of candidate Trump as an anti-Hispanic bigot is disgusting. The man was commenting on a class of law-breakers popularly known as illegal aliens and was specifically focusing on a group of those who commit felonies, both on the way to their lawless border crossings and then afterward. Continued from page 13 What gives, Glen Ellyn? I would like somebody to take note of the fact the village of Glen Ellyn waters the village planters, even in the rain. I see it on a routine basis. They’re wasting water and wasting resources.
Glowing Glen Ellyn review
I feel really blessed to live in such a lovely community like Glen Ellyn. … Yes, it isn’t cheap to live here, but it is truly a first-class community. The events on the Fourth of July will go down in memories for many. The events during the day were awesome, and who can’t say we have the best fireworks in the entire DuPage area? Thanks to the Village officials that made all the events possible.
Lisle’s barnyard buildings When is the village of Lisle going to do anything about the unsightly barnyard structures at Division and Main streets? There seem to be several code violations: There are areas with no siding, the main buildings have no front steps or back steps for safety purposes in case somebody has to respond. … It’s been going on for 20 years now, and it’s a disgrace to the village of Lisle.
Patience on the road
I’d like to ask the citizens of Downers Grove to not become numb to the bumper stickers that ask for patience since there’s a student driver behind the wheel. If … the car is going a little bit too slow for your taste, or they don’t exercise the option to turn right on red, please don’t honk. Please don’t make it any more difficult for a child to learn how to drive in a controlled environment.
Plan a new parade
The Downers Grove Fourth of July parade needs a total makeover. It’s become a parade of self-righteous people pushing their agendas. We need a new director or we need to pump some life into the celebration of the day.

advantage of Jen Hoy’s through ball by firing wide of the frame. After the interval, Chicago picked up right where it had left off, the ball falling right into the pass of Mautz, whose effort from 23 yards out sent it skimming off the bar. However, it would be the Dash finding the net three minutes from the hour mark, as Dalton was unable to get her fists on an Ohai cross from the right and McCarty nodded into the empty goal from the far post. Chicago outside back Gilliland continued to be a nuisance to the Houston defense, again pushing up the left in the 60th minute and making her way to the byline before picking out Huerta at the near post. The rookie forward did well to turn and release a powerful right-footed shot that whizzed just past the upright. Strike partner Hoy would aim perfectly moments later, as she received the ball at the top of the box courtesy of a Rachel Quon header and opted for a wicked half-volley that left McLeod without a chance on its way inside the right post. Down 2-1, the Dash attempted to create quality chances during the remainder of the game, but instead it was the road team that came close to scoring again when Gilliland’s long-range rocket twelve minutes from full time whistled inches wide of the left upright. It would be the day’s final noteworthy action, as the Red Stars put on a clinic in managing a late lead and held on for all three points. Houston’s Tiffany McCarty temporarily leveled the score early in the second period. While the Red Stars had several half-chances in the opening stages of the match, the Dash nearly took the lead at the other end, as Ohai’s low centering ball from the right found a wide open McCarty and the attacker’s mishit shot made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Houston had another close look just after the quarter-hour mark, Rachael Axon creating havoc with a cross from the left and Jessica McDonald failing to make contact with the ball at the doorstep. Chicago would grab the lead in the 19th minute. Alyssa Mautz’s excellent service from the right picked out Vanessa DiBernardo in the center of the area and the midfielder found the net with a clinical finish. The visitors could have doubled their advantage seven minutes later, Arin Gilliland’s outstanding work on the left begging for the centering pass to be tapped home from close range, only for the well-positioned Mautz to go down under a Camila challenge that was judged to have been fair by referee Chris Spivey. The Dash nearly punished their opponents for the missed opportunity late in the half, as Melissa Henderson came close to reaching Ella Masar’s low cross from the right before a deflection on the subsequent redirect by McDonald’s made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Well inside first-half stoppage time, Sofia Huerta had a chance to add a second for the Red Stars on a one-on-one with McLeod, but she failed to take

DuPage County Fair preps for opening day Organizers receive permits after fixing code violations By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com
Q WHAT: DuPage County Fair Q WHEN: July 22 to 26 Q WHERE: DuPage County fairgrounds,
2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton Q COST: $10 for adults; $4 for children
ages 3 to 12; free for military personnel and children younger than 3; $30 for five-day season pass; $20 for weekday pass; $25 for anyday pass; $60 for passport to savings Q INFO: dupagecountyfair.org gramming it hosts will continue. County officials have been weighing the best future use of the site, which may or may not include the fairgrounds. County Board Member Jim Healy, who is involved in determining what’s next for the space, was unavailable to comment. “Sixty-one years ago, this ground was dedicated to be the fairgrounds, and DuPage leadership at that time decided the fair and the fairgrounds were important to the community,” McGuire said. “And I think there is still a lot of the community who believe what happens on the fairgrounds is important.” This year’s fair will feature many fan favorites, including a carnival, craft beer tent, rodeo and demolition derby, according to the fair website. Headlining the fair the night of July 23 is The Willis Clan, of TLC. The Neverly Brothers will perform July 24. On the same day, the Spirits of DuPage beer and wine-tasting event will take place, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the DuPage County Fair and the renovation and preservation of the fairgrounds.

WHEATON – The DuPage County Fair’s organizers have long said the fairgrounds would be ready by summer, despite more than 600 building code violations – a prediction that came true this week. DuPage County Fair Association Manager Jim McGuire confirmed the fair will move forward as scheduled for its 61st year July 22 to 26. It received the final needed permits July 15 from the city of Wheaton, according to Joe Kreidl, the city’s director of building and code enforcement. “We’re having a fair and we accomplished the list that was put in front of us,” McGuire said. “And to be honest with you, we never lost a day of operations here on the fairgrounds.” McGuire said the association successfully completed most of the work city inspectors mandated after an inspection in January. He said the bottom half of the fair’s grandstand will be open, with bleachers to make up for the loss of the top section because of ongoing code violations – a setup he said may improve the view. Kreidl said the association’s effort “had been progressing well” and confirmed the completion of all critical projects identified in the report. The association plans to address 39 remaining minor violations after the fair. Despite the improvements, the association remains unsure how long the fairgrounds and the year-round pro-

Restaurant reviews
Cooper’s Hawk Winery evokes Napa BURR RIDGE – Lunch at Cooper’s Hawk? As a wine lover, it wasn’t hard to convince me. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has become known for its wide selection of wines and its carefully paired menu of modern American comfort food. On a particularly lovely afternoon, I set out with a friend to the location in the Burr Ridge Village Center, and opted for a table on the patio. I ordered a glass of the housemade sangria, a delicious wine punch loaded with fresh fruit and served chilled, perfect for the sunny summer day. My companion chose an equally summery peach wine, which she described as fresh and light – sweet, but not syrupy. It is one of a variety of fruit wines produced by Cooper’s Hawk. We whet our appetites with a starter of Mexican Drunken Shrimp, which were wrapped in bacon and served with fresh guacamole and a butter sauce laced with lime and tequila. The guacamole took center stage, fresh and delicious, pairing well with the saltiness of the crisp bacon. We shared two entrees, opting for beef and chicken. The Chicken Giardiniera was lightly breaded with panko crumbs and Parmesan, and its crispiness held up well to the vinegars and oils of the fresh giardiniera that topped it. The flavors were lovely, not too spicy, and the thought occurred that this combination would make a delightful sandwich. The Short Rib Risotto was a satisfying combination of creamy carnaroli rice, tender boneless short ribs and a rich and flavorful wine sauce melding mushrooms, sweet onions, shaved Parmesan and white truffle oil. I’m a sucker for any roast meat with the perfect sauce, and this certainly fit the bill. A sublime comfort food, it almost made me hope for fall weather. I should mention that every single item on the Coo-

It’s a great guide and choosing a glass this way only enhances the culinary experience. The extensive menu tempts with seafood, chops, pasta, sandwiches, salads, a calorie-conscious collection and gluten-free dishes. At Cooper’s Hawk, the desserts are as homespun and classic as the dishes themselves. The chocolate cake, filled with layers of chocolate mousse and ganache, was outstanding – a decadent treat without the heaviness some full-size desserts impart. The crumbled apple pie was not a slice, but rather a whole personal pie, capped with a flourish of crust and drizzled caramel sauce. Both dishes were served with vanilla ice cream, and definitely sized to share. All in all, this was a wonderful lunch filled with deliciously satisfying food and great wine. I noticed an extensive children’s menu that offered classic kid fare, but also some alternatives to the typical chicken fingers and pizza that were clever, but no less approachable for the young ones – chicken pot stickers, pasta with homemade meatballs,

Pitching performances a highlight for Rams By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

“They play together very well. There’s not really any egos that we’re fighting. They play together and our pitching has been pretty good for the most part this summer. We’ve improved our approach at the plate.” Joel Pelland Glenbard East coach

ABOVE: Glenbard East’s Conner Grzenia delivers a pitch July 14 in a game against York. The junior-to-be showed the potential this summer to be a key hurler in the spring season for the Rams.
ELMHURST – Throwing strikes and pitching to contact are both gospel that many baseball coaches preach, but not every pitcher is able to take advantage of the advice. Glenbard East gave a perfect example of how that strategy can work in the second round of the Phil Lawler Classic on July 14. The Rams beat York 5-1 in the summer tournament without striking out any Duke batters. Conner Grzenia started on the mound and fellow junior Steve O’Brien pitched the final five innings. Grzenia got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning and O’Brien didn’t walk a single Duke batter in his outing. “They always say pitch to contact, so I always do that and it seems to work out well and I change up speeds,” O’Brien said. The win gave the Rams a nice run in the summer postseason tournament to close the season. East opened the tournament with a 13-10 win against Elk Grove the day before. In a semifinal of the 16-team regional hosted by Fenwick on July 15, the Rams fell victim to Nazareth, falling 8-3. Joey
Moore sparked a three-run seventh-inning rally with a triple, but the deficit was too large by then. “I think as competitors you always want to play to win, even in the summer,” coach Joel Pelland said. Despite the loss against Nazareth, Pelland got to see some of the younger players on the team step up during the two wins. “The two guys who threw for us [against York] are juniors,” Pelland said. “They’re getting their feet wet and it was nice to see them come out and compete [and be] in the strike zone. Our defense made plays behind them. We didn’t throw the ball around, we didn’t kick it around, so they did a great job.” One of the highlights of the summer for the Rams was having senior Michael Sebby commit to play at Illinois State. The pitcher and position player was a standout for East in the spring in his second year on varsity and impressed the Redbirds enough to earn an offer. Even with Sebby leading the way from a recruiting perspective, Pelland said it was a balanced, cohesive group in the summer. “They play together very well,” Pelland said. “There’s not really any egos that we’re fighting. They play together and our pitching has been pretty good for the most part this summer. We’ve improved our approach at the plate.”

SPORTS BRIEFS
Summer season allows Willowbrook to pick up right where it left off
Soon-to-be Glenbard East sophomore Kolie Allen teamed with Lyons Township High School product Meg Kowalski to win the 16-and-under doubles title at the United States Tennis Association Midwest closed championships. In the championship match in Indianapolis, Allen and Kowalski cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win against Ahmeir Kyle and Haleigh Porter. The tournament featured more than 1,000 of the top junior players in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – There are so many familiar faces around Willowbrook baseball this summer it’s almost as if the varsity team just kept playing after the spring. The Warriors opened the Phil Lawler Classic, which is the postseason tournament for summer baseball, on July 13 against Morton with eight returning varsity players in the starting lineup. Willowbrook picked up a 7-0 win against the Mustangs. “It’s always fun to win,” senior Cam Zunkel said. “We go out there and we play our butts off and win some ball games.” The returning group has helped the Warriors win with regularity in the summer, earning the No. 2 seed in the 16-team Fenwick regional. Seniors Matt Garbacz, Matt Pizur, Kyle Martyniuk, Chris DeSalvo, Mark Molitor and T.J. Geritano and junior Kyle Ferguson also were varsity returners to start the summer postseason opener. “We definitely have a lot of experience coming back and we have a lot of juniors stepping up,” Garbacz said. “Everyone is working together well.” Zunkel fired a one-hitter against the Mustangs and had a pair of hits while batting leadoff. The Warriors lost against Lyons Township 6-5 in the second round on July 14. While the Warriors play during the week, travel ball dominates the players’ time during the weekends. Garbacz is playing for T’s Training Academy in Lombard, which features Willowbrook pitching coach Curtis Hudson, T.J. Geritano’s father Teno Geritano and
